In rare cases — such as when you are facing a hostile audience, you might want to start out by emphasizing where you agree with your audience, and then carefully working your way towards your most divisive, most daring claims.
Set a timer, and deliver your speech to a willing co-worker or family member, your pet fish, or the bathroom mirror.
My students are often surprised at how hard it is to fill up 3 minutes for an informal practice speech early in the term, and how hard it is to fit everything they want to say into a 10-minute formal speech later in the term.
Once you have the right amount of content, make a video recording of yourself practicing. If you plan to show a video clip, or ad-lib an explanation of a diagram, or load a website, or pass out paper handouts, or saw an assistant in half, actually do it while the camera is rolling, so that you know exactly how much time it takes.
Time it out.
If you know your conclusion takes you 90 seconds to deliver, make sure to start your conclusion when you have at least 90 seconds left.
At several key points during your speech, maybe while you are playing a video or while the audience is taking in a complex image, glance at the clock and check to see — are you on track?
If you notice you’re starting Section 3 60 seconds later than you had intended, try to make up for time by rushing through your second example in section 3 and cutting the third example in section 4, so that you still have the full 90 seconds at the end to deliver that powerful conclusion.
I once sat through a four-hour training session, during which this was all I could see of the instructor.
Go ahead and write your whole speech out so you can read robotically if you blank out, but you should practice your speech so you know it well enough that you can glance up from your notes and look at your audience as you speak.
when you run your PowerPoint presentation.
, either; your audience isn’t down there.
Position your visual aids or keyboard so that you . |
Pay attention to the audience, and they will pay attention to you.
Don’t try to recite from memory . If you spend your energy worrying about what you’re supposed to say next, you won’t be able to pay attention to whether the audience can hear you, or whether the overhead projections are focused.
Preparation : Set up before the audience files into their seats. If you have scheduled a presentation for a class, don’t sit in your seat like a lump while your professor calls the roll and hands out papers. Few things are more boring than watching a presenter log into the computer, fiddle with the video data projector, hunt around for the light switches, etc.
Introduction : As the audience files into their seats, have a title card displayed on the screen — or at least write your name and the title of your talk on the whiteboard. In a formal setting, usually a moderator will usually introduce you, so you won’t need to repeat everything the moderator says. Avoid canned introductions like “Principal Burch, members of the faculty, and fellow students, we are gathered here today…”
Hashtag : If it’s likely that many people in your audience use the same social media network, consider encouraging them to post their thoughts there. When you introduce yourself, give your social media handle and suggest a hashtag.
Handouts : Consider distributing handouts that present the basic facts (names, dates, timelines) and your main points. You can keep the conclusion just slightly mysterious, if you don’t want to give everything away immediately, but the idea is to free the audience from the feeling that they have to write everything down themselves. (Note: Simply printing up all the overhead slides wastes a lot of paper.)
Grabber : Grab the attention of your audience with a startling fact or claim, an inspiring quotation, or a revealing anecdote. This is not the time to try out your nightclub act; the “grabber” is not just comic relief, it also helps you set up the problem that you are going to address. If the audience will be diverse and general, you can use the “grabber” as a metaphor, helping the audience see why the topic is so important to you, and how it might be important to them, too. If your audience shares your technical specialty, and thus needs no special introduction to the topic, feel free simply to state your purpose without much to-do; but bear in mind that even technical audiences don’t want to be bored.
Road Map : Once you have established the problem or the main point of your talk, let the audience know how you are going to get to a solution. You might put up a series of questions on a slide, then as your talk progresses, proceed to answer each one. You might break each question down into a series of smaller questions, and answer each one of these in turn. Each time you finish a subsection, return to the road map, to help your audience keep track of where you have been and where you are going.
Conclusion : To give your presentation closure, return to the “grabber”, and extend it, modify it, or otherwise use it to help drive home your main point. Recap your main points, and demonstrate how they all fit together into a thought that the audience members can take with them.
Don’t read word-for-word with your nose buried in a stack of papers . If you bother to show up to hear a person speak, how do you feel when the speaker mumbles through page after page of written text? Do you feel you should have just asked for a copy of the paper in the mail?
When you present, make every effort to include your audience; after all, they are the reason you are speaking in the first place.
If you do feel that you must write out your speech word-for-word, you should be familiar enough with it that you don’t need to look at the paper all the time. (And hold the page up when you glance at it, rather than bending down to look at it.)
Your slides should present an (not just the bare framework) of your talk. If you begin with a slide that lists a series of topics or questions, your audience will expect the rest of your talk to work through that list in more detail (just as this web page began with a list of tips, then followed up with details about each tip.) If each page throws up more lists, your talk will seem random. Larry Lessig (an ethicist, open-source culture activist, and politician) has developed a very sparse PowerPoint style that assists his spoken voice. His slides sometimes contain just a single word, and he times the slides so that the written words (and occasional images) emphasize the spoken words. (See: |
Vague and pointless slides are alienating.
A slide that simply presents the bare structure of your talk is pointless. Rather than a slide labeled “Introduction,” ask a question that actually introduces some idea. Rather than a slide labeled “Case Study 1,” give a startling fact from the case study. |
Cluttered and wordy slides can be overwhelming.
People can read faster than you can speak, so don’t bore the audience by reading a slide full of text word-for-word. By the time you get to the end of the slide, we will already probably be liking cat pictures on Instagram. |
Spinning and bouncing text impresses nobody (and fools nobody). The people in your audience probably see dozens of slide shows every month. They want to evaluate your ideas. Proving that you can select a cool transition from a drop-down list is not going to earn you any points or win you a contract. |
To help pace yourself, at the top of each page of your notes, write down what time it should be ; as you turn each page, you can glance at the clock and see whether you are on track.
(The first time I gave this advice to a technical writing class, I mimed the action of “looking at the clock” — and noticed that I was running ten minutes behind, eating into time that I had promised to a student for an in-class testing session. That was a rather humbling experience!)
See the “preparation” section above. If you have already practiced your speech and timed out the various sections, you’ll know whether you are running long. If you are, don’t talk faster — cut something that you already marked out as optional.
Decide in advance which examples, which anecdotes, which subsections you can drop, without damaging the whole presentation.
I was at a conference in 1998 where the first speaker talked for 40 minutes — double her allotted time. (Why the moderator allowed this is a mystery to me.)

Is that the topic you were assigned? Are you taking a public speaking class, a child development class, a class in writing personal memoirs, or are you learning English as a second language? I don’t know how your instructor will evaluate your work, so I am not sure how to help.
You might find it useful to look at this handout on writing personal essays. http://jerz.setonhill.edu/writing/creative1/personal-essays/

I suppose to give out a presentation on Monday on someone or something in either an athlete or an actor and I don’t know how to start
i have a question i am supposed to give a speech but it has to have a power point or a drama thing the only problem is that i can’t have a power point because it won’t work into my speech and neither will a drama thing what should i do?
I suggest you talk to whoever set up the requirement for a slideshow/drama component. Maybe there is some flexibility, or maybe you’ll find a way to work that component into your speech.

I have to do a presentation about “Importance of learning English”. There are 6 people in my group including myself. The presentation has to be exactly 8 minutes. We can’t use PowerPoint. Can you give us any unique, memorable and creative idea?
What are some lessons or life experiences that you find unique and memorable? I’d probably do a play, with a character who gets into trouble because he/she doesn’t know English, and then has a chance to correct those problems by demonstrating how learning English can fix the problems.
Hello mr.Dennis,I go straight to it.how can I become the most sought after Master of Ceremony(M.C.)/tv show presenter extra-ordinaire in my country before going international?any useful tips?

That was a great introduction your boss just delivered. The room is quiet and now it is your turn…your turn to speak.
Maybe you need to present your team, or deliver a sales pitch, or explain some figures and trends.
One thing is for sure: your presentation has to be awesome!
And your presentation will be in English, of course, as it is the language of communication at work.
Let’s think back: your English is quite decent – you can travel abroad and make yourself understood everywhere, you can communicate on the phone with your English-speaking colleagues and get the message across, and you write so many e-mails every day.
True, but these are familiar situations.
This time, however, you feel anxious because this presentation is formal and you have only one chance to get it right.
Speaking in public has always made you nervous, but speaking in public in English makes you twice as nervous.
What can you do? Simply follow this guide, which will help you step by step to prepare an awesome presentation in English.
First I will introduce the steps to create the oral presentation, and second we will look at some tips for the format and the style.
Remember that the stress before giving an oral presentation is normal, and even beneficial – it will give you the energy and motivation to prepare a good presentation, and preparation is key to delivering a memorable speech.
Good preparation will also give you confidence, which in turn will make speaking in front of your audience easier.
The five steps to follow to prepare a good presentation are simple to remember: they are the ‘ BASIS ‘ steps.
B = brainstorm A = audience S = slides I = ideas S = simulate
Let’s look at each step carefully.
Brainstorming means putting on paper all the ideas that are connected to the topic of your presentation .
You can brainstorm alone or with colleagues. Ideally you should take a sheet of paper and write on it all the information you know and all the ideas you have about this topic.
A common way of brainstorming consists in writing the main topic inside a circle at the center of your page and then jotting down all around it the ideas and information connected to it. You can use arrows to indicate relationships.
Knowing who you will address is vital as it determines what information you need to select from your brainstorming session.
Keep only the information that is important to your audience .
If you add unnecessary information, you will end up losing your audience’s attention and your important message will get lost. So select carefully what to include in your presentation.
Another important reason to know your audience is the degree of formality that you need to use.
For example, how to address the listeners (“Ladies and Gentlemen” as opposed to “Hi everyone”), and whether or not to include humor (but I will come back to that later).
Make sure you find out who your audience will be before preparing your presentation.
Visual aids are key : they help you to remember what to say, and they help the audience to understand your presentation. However they need to be used wisely.
Most presentations will have slides, which can be designed with various software programs (e.g. PowerPoint, Open Office Impress or Prezi ).
Because your slides contain the information about your topic, you do not need to memorize your whole presentation, nor do you need to use clumsy paper notes, and so your hands can move freely during your speech.
When designing your slides remember:
Now that you have designed your slides, you need to accompany them with explanations. This step is the most difficult one if English is not your native language.
You need to prepare the explanation for each slide. In order to describe the idea in each slide, you need to use precise vocabulary combined with correct grammar – and to deliver both fluently.
So, sit back and look at each slide, then say out loud (or do it mentally if that is not possible) what you will say in front of your audience.
Describe each idea with your own words in the most natural fashion, as if you were explaining it to a friend or to a close colleague .
If you do not know some terms, look them up in a dictionary and write them down.
However, resist the urge to write a script for each slide. Written speeches generally get in the way of effective communication as the speaker ends up reading a script instead of talking to the audience. Only talented speakers can make written speeches sound natural.
Also, rely on what you already know in English. Now is not the appropriate time to venture into grammatical constructions that make you feel uncomfortable. There are many ways to express ideas, so use the words and grammar that you know well.
The final step is simulating the actual presentation and it is essential to the success of your presentation.
This is what you need to do:
You can use a simple video camera, your smart phone, a digital camera or even a webcam.
However, it is important when you film yourself that the camera focuses on the upper part of your body, so that you can assess your body language.
Also, make sure you are standing up. This is important for 3 reasons:
First, because this will likely be your position during the real presentation.
Second, it is a position that opens up your lungs and helps you to breathe better (which is very important to speaking loudly and clearly).
Finally, it allows you to move and to accompany your speech with gestures that emphasize the meaning of your words – and so improves your communication.
After you have filmed yourself, watch your presentation with a critical eye – give yourself both positive and negative criticism.
What did you do well? What do you need to improve?
They are many aspects to oral communication besides the words you say – your voice, body and eyes need to complement your speech.
To evaluate your performance you can use the following self-assessment grid:
Download the Self-assessment Grid
Once you have used the self-assessment to identify your communication problems, you need to address them: correct the English mistakes, improve your voice or your body language, and film yourself a second time.
Then assess your performance again with the same self-assessment grid. If you are happy with the result, you are ready for the final show.
If not, you can continue to rehearse the presentation until you feel ready.
Depending on time constraints you can choose how many times you practise your speech before the actual performance, but remember that practicing it is not optional: if you want to deliver a good presentation, you have to practise it first .
A final consideration goes to the room where you will give your presentation: if possible, practise in that room, or at least get familiar with it (check where the switches for lights, screens, projectors, etc. are located).
Your oral presentation should have 3 parts : an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
Your introduction presents the topic and gives an overview of the presentation, the body contains the information, facts or ideas, and the conclusion summarizes the ideas developed previously.
Repetition helps retention : if some information is important and needs to be remembered by your audience, be sure to repeat it. For example, mention it in the body and in the conclusion.
Tell your audience what you are going to tell them Tell them Then tell them what you have told them.
Keep it short and simple : remember that too much information will only result in your audience remembering nothing. Present only the important ideas in your slideshow, and repeat them in the conclusion.
Be credible : avoid spelling mistakes and mispronunciation. You might be a very talented professional but your presentation will be less convincing if it contains errors, spelling mistakes or mispronunciation of English terms.
You need to pay special attention to spelling and pronunciation in titles and keywords as well as in the introduction and the conclusion.
Use spellcheckers to check the spelling of your slides and online dictionaries to listen to the pronunciation of words (such as the Cambridge Dictionary ).
Avoid humor . Although humor can be helpful to defuse tense situations, it can also be dangerous and unpredictable. What makes you smile or laugh might be offensive to a foreigner.
Unless you know your audience well, refrain from using humor in professional presentations as it might lead to the opposite effect.
Engage the audience . When you deliver your speech, you need to establish a relationship between you and your audience.
A good way to do that is to keep eye contact and to ask questions. You can ask direct questions and the audience can answer verbally or physically (by raising their hands, for example) or you can opt for rhetorical questions, which are questions that do not require answers.
For example, you can introduce a slide with the following rhetorical question: “So how can we address this problem?” and then you give the solutions. Or start your conclusion with “What have we learnt so far?” and repeat the important ideas.
Asking questions is a good way to keep your audience attentive and to put rhythm into the presentation.
You are now ready to stand up in front of your audience and deliver a memorable speech. Relax, take a deep breath, and just do it.
In conclusion, remember that the more oral presentations you make, the more confident you will be and the easier they will become.
View every opportunity to make a presentation as a challenge and as practice for your next big presentation!

Building an academic reputation is one of the most important functions of an academic faculty member, and one of the best ways to build a reputation is by giving scholarly presentations, particularly those that are oral presentations. Earning the reputation of someone who can give an excellent talk often results in invitations to give keynote addresses at regional and national conferences, which increases a faculty member’s visibility along with their area of research. Given the importance of oral presentations, it is surprising that few graduate or medical programs provide courses on how to give a talk. This is unfortunate because there are skills that can be learned and strategies that can be used to improve the ability to give an interesting, well-received oral presentation. To that end, the aim of this chapter is to provide faculty with best practices and tips on preparing and giving an academic oral presentation.

Discover how to capture the maximum attention of your audience with these simple tips.
How to make effective presentations
Making an oral presentation that captures the public’s attention from beginning to end is a challenge, especially when it comes to complex or tedious issues. If you want your presentation to be successful, use these recommendations the next time you are in front of an audience.
Before making a speech, analysewho you will be addressing and focus on them. Investigate their interests and motivations and include them, taking into account the main message, as well as the points you need to emphasise. Remember that the more you identify with the listener through their exposure to you, the greater your influence will be.
When you write the speech that will later be verbalised, place yourself in the audience’s place and think what concepts may be boring or incomprehensible. Once you distinguish them, try to explain them in an easy and entertaining way. Keep in mind that if you do not understand the message, it’s even less likely the other people will easily understand the message.
A striking presentation depends, fundamentally, on the effort you put into it. Repeating your speech again and again out loud is a good way to internaliseit and reduce the risk of mistakes. In addition, practisingwill help you to look confident in front of the public.
Many times, the oral presentation requires explaining difficult to digest concepts. A slide presentation makes it possible to better assimilate the information, as it is support material for the receiver, but also for the presenter. You can summarise the core data of your speech in a PowerPointfile, or similar presentation media. Of course, if you choose to use a projector to show your slides, then ensure you have sufficient time pre-presentation to check its operation and that the angle of the projector mount will allow for optimal viewing of the slides by the attendees.
This rule, created by Guy Kawasaki, implies that if you use an electronic presentation to boost the exhibition, you should not have more than 10 slides, 20 minutes in length, or more than 30 points in the length of the presentation.
This tactic works as a hook to the rest of the presentation. It must be an entertaining story with which everyone present can identify. Capturing the interest from the beginning and introducing the main ideas in an entertaining way will help you control the presentation.
Looking directly into the eyes is the most effective way to persuade. Those who listen to you should feel that the speech was created especially for them, contemplating their needs and interests, so take the time to make eye contact with each person who attends the event.
Knowing the speech perfectly generates credibility. Hesitation plays against persuading, remember that all eyes will be on you. Reading will not only distract listeners, but it will convey the feeling that you do not understand your own message.
It is important that at the end of your presentation, the main message remains clear and strong in the minds of the listeners. The verbalisedwords disappear in your articulation, therefore, to fix it, you will need to reiterate it at least three times during the presentation.
Including the audience is a good strategy to maintain their attention throughout the entire time. You can use phrases like “It’s a good question”, “What do you think?”, “Excellent contribution”, to show that you are interested in their participation. Also, you will have a few extra seconds to organiseyour response.

Exploring excellence in custom fence construction.
You must recognize the importance of a skilled contractor when it comes to construction work. If you are planning for a fence in your residential or commercial property in Seattle, you need the service of an experienced contractor.
Custom solutions are becoming more and more in demand in the world of contemporary building and remodeling. Here’s how skilled and innovative fence contractors are satisfying this demand:
A key component of contemporary security and property design is the installation of custom fences , which combine aesthetic appeal and functionality to improve both residential and commercial environments. Innovation in materials and processes, a customized approach that addresses each client’s specific demands, and a dedication to artistry characterize this specialist sector.
The current construction environment is witnessing increased demand for custom-built fences, mostly from companies and individuals looking for individualized solutions beyond typical offers.
Building a bespoke fence requires a commitment to skill. Expert contractors create fences that are not only strong and safe but also aesthetically pleasing by drawing on years of experience and knowledge. They make long-lasting and harmonious fences with the property’s architectural design by fusing traditional woodworking methods with contemporary building supplies.
Contractors constantly research novel building materials and techniques to increase usefulness, sustainability, and durability. Innovation enables contractors to provide solutions that satisfy the wide range of demands of today’s property owners, from eco-friendly materials that lessen their environmental impact to cutting-edge security measures that improve property safety.
Custom-built fences have several uses in residential and business environments. In residential settings, fencing offers aesthetic appeal, seclusion, and security. In addition to defining property lines and establishing secure play areas for kids and dogs, it also improves the home’s exterior appeal. Delivering an oral presentation in conferences and meetings can seem daunting. However, if delivered effectively, it can be an invaluable opportunity to showcase your work in front of peers as well as receive feedback on your project. In this “How to” article, we demonstrate how one can plan and successfully deliver an engaging oral presentation.
Giving an oral presentation at a scientific conference is an almost inevitable task at some point during your medical career. The prospect of presenting your original work to colleagues and peers, however, may be intimidating, and it can be difficult to know how to approach it. Nonetheless, it is important to remember that although daunting, an oral presentation is one of the best ways to get your work out there, and so should be looked upon as an exciting and invaluable opportunity.
Although things may vary slightly depending on the type of research you are presenting, the typical structure is as follows:
Picking out only the most important findings to include in your presentation is key and will keep it concise and easy to follow. This in turn will keep your viewers engaged, and more likely to understand and remember your presentation.
Psychological analysis of PowerPoint presentations, finds that 8 psychological principles are often violated 1 . One of these was the limited capacity of working memory, which can hold 4 units of information at any 1 time in most circumstances. Hence, too many points or concepts on a slide could be detrimental to the presenter’s desire to give information.
You can also help keep your audience engaged with images, which you can talk around, rather than lots of text. Video can also be useful, for example, a surgical procedure. However, be warned that IT can let you down when you need it most and you need to have a backup plan if the video fails. It’s worth coming to the venue early and testing it and resolving issues beforehand with the AV support staff if speaking at a conference.
It is important not to clutter your slides with too much text or too many pictures. An easy way to do this is by using the 5×5 rule. This means using no more than 5 bullet points per slide, with no more than 5 words per bullet point. It is also good to break up the text-heavy slides with ones including diagrams or graphs. This can also help to convey your results in a more visual and easy-to-understand way.
It is best to keep the slide design simple, as busy backgrounds and loud color schemes are distracting. Ensure that you use a uniform font and stick to the same color scheme throughout. As a general rule, a light-colored background with dark-colored text is easier to read than light-colored text on a dark-colored background. If you can use an image instead of text, this is even better.
A systematic review study of expert opinion papers demonstrates several key recommendations on how to effectively deliver medical research presentations 2 . These include:
You should practice your presentation before the conference, making sure that you stick to the allocated time given to you. Oral presentations are usually short (around 8–10 min maximum), and it is, therefore, easy to go under or over time if you have not rehearsed. Aiming to spend around 1 minute per slide is usually a good guide. It is useful to present to your colleagues and seniors, allowing them to ask you questions afterwards so that you can be prepared for the sort of questions you may get asked at the conference. Knowing your research inside out and reading around the subject is advisable, as there may be experts watching you at the conference with more challenging questions! Make sure you re-read your paper the day before, or on the day of the conference to refresh your memory.
It is useful to bring along handouts of your presentation for those who may be interested. Rather than printing out miniature versions of your power point slides, it is better to condense your findings into a brief word document. Not only will this be easier to read, but you will also save a lot of paper by doing this!
Having rehearsed your presentation beforehand, the most important thing to do when you get to the conference is to keep calm and be confident. Remember that you know your own research better than anyone else in the room! Be sure to take some deep breaths and speak at an appropriate pace and volume, making good eye contact with your viewers. If there is a microphone, don’t keep turning away from it as the audience will get frustrated if your voice keeps cutting in and out. Gesturing and using pointers when appropriate can be a really useful tool, and will enable you to emphasize your important findings.
When reaching the end of your presentation, you should slow down in order to clearly convey your key points. Using phases such as “in summary” and “to conclude” often prompts those who have drifted off slightly during your presentation start paying attention again, so it is a critical time to make sure that your work is understood and remembered. Leaving up your conclusions/summary slide for a short while after stopping speaking will give the audience time to digest the information. Conclude by acknowledging any fellow authors or assistants before thanking the audience for their attention and inviting any questions (as long as you have left sufficient time).
If asked a question, firstly thank the audience member, then repeat what they have asked to the rest of the listeners in case they didn’t hear the first time. Keep your answers short and succinct, and if unsure say that the questioner has raised a good point and that you will have to look into it further. Having someone else in the audience write down the question is useful for this.
The key points to remember when preparing for an oral presentation are:
The authors declare that they have no financial conflict of interest with regard to the content of this report.
Sponsorships or competing interests that may be relevant to content are disclosed at the end of this article.
