Some people may be apprehensive about seeking tutoring because they feel ashamed or think it’s a sign of weakness. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Tutoring is an invaluable resource that can help students make meaningful progress in their studies and reach their academic goals. It can also empower them to take ownership of their learning process and build strategies for success.

Below are 13 of the many benefits tutoring offers and how it can help students.

Benefits of Tutoring - Tutor Working With Student

1. More engaged moving forward

Students who receive tutoring are more likely to stay engaged with their coursework, as it allows them to receive the help they need when and where they need it. This individualized instruction helps build confidence and encourages students to take ownership of their learning process.

Tutoring sets students up for success and helps them become more independent learners in the long run.

2. Improved grades and test scores

The most immediate benefit of tutoring is that it can help students improve their academic performance. With one-on-one attention, a tutor can help identify gaps in knowledge and create personalized learning plans tailored to each student’s needs. This allows students to focus on areas they need help with while also encouraging them to take an active role in their own learning.

Tutoring can also provide invaluable test-taking strategies and techniques to help boost confidence and prepare for exams or tests ahead of time.

3. Stress relief and better time management

Tutoring sessions provide a pressure-free environment for students to ask questions and get feedback on difficult concepts or coursework. This helps them avoid feeling overwhelmed by deadlines or test prep, as well as manage their time more effectively.

Tutoring also helps students stay organized and on top of assignments, allowing them to focus on the big picture and understand what’s expected of them. This can alleviate a lot of stress and help students take ownership of their own learning process.

4. Encouraging curiosity and exploring interests

Tutors can provide an engaging environment that encourages curiosity and exploration while also providing support. This is especially helpful for students who may not have access to supplemental resources or activities in their regular classrooms.

By discussing topics outside of the traditional curriculum, tutors can spark interest in new subjects and open up avenues for future exploration beyond the scope of their current coursework. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of their interests and passions, which can be incredibly beneficial for future career paths.

5. Increased opportunity for college acceptance and scholarships

Students who are actively engaged in tutoring often have higher GPAs, which can significantly improve their chances of getting into college or receiving scholarship offers. Tutoring allows students to focus on specific areas they may be struggling with and helps them build successful strategies for success.

This can also be incredibly beneficial when it comes to college applications, as essays and other application materials often need to be tailored to the individual school or program. Tutors can help with this process by providing support and guidance along the way.

6. Improved understanding of difficult concepts

Tutoring is especially helpful for those students who are struggling with difficult concepts in their regular classes. With one-on-one instruction from an experienced teacher, students can gain a better understanding of their coursework and develop skills that will follow them into more advanced subjects in the future.

By breaking down complex topics into smaller steps, tutors can also help build confidence in these areas and give students the tools to succeed in any situation. This can be incredibly beneficial for both current and future coursework.

7. Cultivating a growth mindset

Tutoring not only helps students work through difficult material, it also encourages students to take an active role in their own learning. With personalized attention from a tutor, students can focus on their strengths while also developing areas of weakness.

This helps cultivate a growth mindset that will be hugely beneficial in college and beyond. Tutors can provide guidance and support that allows students to think critically, ask questions, and make connections between different topics or concepts.

8. Confidence building

Confidence is essential for any student to be successful in school. Tutoring helps build confidence by providing an individualized learning experience where students receive personalized feedback on areas they need improvement on. The more support and encouragement they receive during tutoring sessions, they more they will feel capable of tackling difficult material without fear or anxiety.

Tutors can also provide useful resources and advice on how to further develop skills or strengthen areas of weakness. By helping students recognize their strengths and build upon them, tutoring can play an instrumental role in boosting confidence.

9. Developing study skills

Tutors are great at teaching students effective studying techniques that can help them prepare for tests, exams, and other academic obstacles. This includes time management strategies, active learning approaches, note-taking tips, and more.

By helping students utilize these techniques during tutoring sessions, they’ll be able to take the skills with them into their regular classes. This will help them stay organized, motivated, and on top of assignments which can lead to better overall performance.

10. Improved self-esteem

Tutoring can help students build an enhanced sense of self-worth. As they begin to recognize their strengths and understand areas in which they need improvement, students gain a better understanding of what they’re capable of. This can result in improved self-esteem and confidence in the classroom.

By having someone who takes an active interest in their learning, tutors are able to provide personalized encouragement that can help boost morale and create positive academic experiences. Tutoring can also help strengthen interpersonal relationships by building trust between student and tutor. This helps foster a safe space for open communication, allowing individuals to feel comfortable taking risks with their learning.

11. Networking opportunities

Tutoring can be a great source of networking opportunities. As students work one-on-one with experienced tutors, they can develop close relationships that may lead to future job or academic opportunities. Tutors are often knowledgeable professionals in their respective fields, and they may be able to offer advice and insight into the working world beyond their own classroom.

By leveraging these network opportunities, students can find mentors who can help them succeed in college or other pursuits. This type of personalized support is invaluable for any student looking to gain an edge in the competitive world of academics.

12. More reflective learner

Tutoring encourages students to become more reflective learners. As they reflect upon their own learning processes and challenges, they gain an understanding of what works well for them and what strategies need further development.

By having someone actively involved in the process, tutors are able to provide feedback on areas such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and more. This allows students to identify strengths and weaknesses so that they can adjust accordingly and develop a personalized approach to their education.

13. Identifying areas of weakness

Tutors can help students identify any academic weak spots that may have gone unnoticed otherwise. By providing one-on-one attention tailored to each student’s individual needs, tutors can pinpoint issues and help students develop strategies for overcoming them.

By addressing any areas of weakness, tutors can provide valuable insight into how to improve overall performance in all subjects. This helps build a solid foundation for academic success and makes it easier for students to stay on top of their studies.

Tutoring is a powerful tool for students of all ages and backgrounds. By providing personalized guidance and support, tutors can help students achieve their full academic potential. From boosting self-esteem to improving communication skills, there are numerous benefits that come with having a tutor as an educational partner.

In addition, tutoring offers valuable networking opportunities and a chance to become a more reflective learner. All of these are invaluable assets for any student looking to succeed in their studies. With the right tutor by your side, you can unlock your full potential and reach heights you never thought were possible.

AVID’s Six Tutoring Principles for Student Success

Explore a tutorial model that features a scaffolded approach to help improve student performance, increase their mental well-being, and support their academic aspirations.

This resource was created by AVID

Tutoring is a fundamental component of education, but did you know that many approaches to tutoring have little to no effect on student outcomes? Don’t waste your time and money on unproven tutoring approaches! AVID has logged over 100 million hours of tutoring in our four decades of experience and has developed differentiated tutoring models to support all students: individual or 1:1, Collaborative Study Groups with peers, AVID Elective Tutorials, and AVID Excel Scholar Groups.

Nationally, AVID serves millions of students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college, are often from families living on a low income, and are predominantly students of color. In our mission to close the opportunity gap and prepare all students for college and career readiness and success, we have developed and implemented a variety of tutoring models that encompass the following six principles.

AVID tutoring is:

  • Structured: A process of repeatable steps allows for consistency across models; teachers, tutors, and students are trained on, reflective of, and continually coached in that process.
  • Student-Centered and Safe: All tutorial models are built on a foundation of relational capacity so that students feel supported while seeking solutions.
  • Inquiry-Based: Tutors and peers ask higher-order questions instead of offering answers.
  • Collaborative: Peers use their collective agency to resolve points of confusion and support each other.
  • Equitable: Defined roles and responsibilities ensure equal participation.
  • Metacognitive: Students identify where they are confused, and then summarize their new learning and reflect on the process.

Phases of the Process

Before, During, and After Steps of the AVID Tutoring Process

AVID’s tutoring process features a scaffolded and supportive approach to help students exercise their “inquiry muscles.” The process is divided into three parts: before, during, and after the session. Before the tutoring, students prepare by identifying a question they have about the material, using their resources and background knowledge to clearly articulate what they know and what they do not yet understand.

During tutoring, they present their specific question to the tutor or small group and share the steps they have taken to try to understand the problem. Next, the tutor and group members ask questions by revisiting content resources instead of offering solutions. This inquiry incorporates the use of academic language and vocabulary associated with the content area. Finally, they generate a list of generalized steps to their solutions to be used in future problem-solving.

After the session, students reflect on their learning, identifying which resources and strategies helped them better understand the concept or problem. Reflecting on the steps taken to find clarity develops their problem-solving abilities and builds their academic confidence.

Tutors need to be trained to leverage inquiry and supplied with strategies and tools to support students in owning their learning. One necessary outcome of tutor training is developing tutors’ understanding of the importance of creating a supportive learning environment through the intentional use of social and emotional learning strategies. When there is rapport between students and tutors, students can be authentically vulnerable and seek the help they need.

Student Skill Development

Tutoring programs deliver the strongest educational impact when they accelerate learning and help students develop the academic skills needed to be future-ready. When the principles of AVID tutoring are implemented successfully, students develop skills, many of which are detailed below, that go beyond the basic goal of content retention.

  • Deepened Content Knowledge:  Students deepen their content knowledge in the academic area with which they struggle.
  • Relational Capacity: Students learn the importance of relationships and building a network of support.
  • Critical Thinking Skills:  Students repeatedly practice metacognition in the before, during, and after phases of strategic tutoring.
  • Fluency in Academic Language: Students practice speaking the academic language of the content area(s) in which they need support and tutoring.
  • Inquiry: Students engage in academic conversations grounded in higher-order questioning.
  • Process Identification: Students identify a sequence of steps to duplicate solutions to similar problems.
  • Summary: Students write or speak about their academic learning to make connections between new learning and previous learning, their experiences, themselves, and/or their world.
  • Reflection:  Students reflect, verbally or in writing, to identify strengths and areas for continuous improvement within the process.
  • Agency: Students own their learning as they internalize a process for advocating for themselves.

A structured process with clearly defined roles and responsibilities for students and trained tutors ensures that educators can implement effective tutoring. Incorporating the Six Tutoring Principles into individual, small-group, or collaborative tutoring sessions will support students’ current and future academic success while building their skills and agency.

Academic Advising for College Course Help

Why you need an academic adviser for course help.

Working with an academic adviser at college can be valuable when you need college coursework help. These advisers are often the first point of contact when you need educational guidance, support, and resources. They can also play a critical role in helping you navigate the complexities of college, develop academic and personal goals, and identify the resources and support you need to achieve your goals.

One of the key benefits of working with an academic adviser is the ability to plan your course schedule and make sure you’re taking the right classes to earn your degree. This can be a good idea if you pursue a major with specific course requirements or transfer from another institution. An academic adviser can help you understand what your major covers and ensure that you take the necessary classes to complete it.

Academic advisers can also help you explore different majors and career paths to find the best fit for your interests and skills. They can provide information about various classes, career opportunities, and potential career paths based on your interests and goals. If you’re undecided about your major or considering a change, these advisers can point you in the right direction.

Navigating complex academic policies and procedures can be challenging for many students. Academic advisers can help you understand what is required for your specific academic program. Some majors have certain rules about transfer credits, course waivers, and academic probation. They can also help you understand how these policies can impact your academic progress. These advisers can help you address any other challenges that may occur while you’re on campus, too.

Academic Advisers Can Direct You to Diverse Services

Academic advisers can connect you with campus resources and support services to help you succeed academically and personally. They can provide information about tutoring services, study groups, academic support programs, and other resources to help you thrive on campus. Along with that, these professionals can also have information about support services to help you handle personal challenges, such as mental health services, disability services, and financial aid.

Developing study strategies and time-management skills is critical for success in college. Academic advisers can help you use these skills to help you balance your academic and personal commitments. They can guide you in managing your time effectively, prioritizing your tasks, and staying organized.

Finally, academic advisers can help you address any academic or personal challenges impacting your performance or well-being. They can provide guidance on how to handle difficult academic situations, such as failing a class or experiencing academic probation. They can also offer support and referrals for personal challenges like stress, anxiety, or depression.

Academic advising is a valuable resource for students seeking guidance and support to help them succeed in college. By working with an academic adviser, you can get the guidance and support you need to navigate the challenges of college and achieve your academic and personal goals.

Where to Find Academic Support

It's a good idea to become familiar with the following resources for help with coursework and studying.

Office hours

Your professors have office hours when you can meet one-on-one to discuss any questions or problems. Building a positive communication relationship with your professors can enhance your course experience and provide you with additional support. Don't hesitate to take advantage of this time if you have questions about coursework, testing, or other issues. If your professors can't answer your questions, they can point you to other resources.

Academic Advising

Most students get the chance to work with an academic adviser. An adviser can tell you which classes you need to take, help you plan a schedule that meets your needs and guide you when it’s time to choose a major. Some academic advisers specialize in specific fields of study, such as biology. Others work with certain groups of students, such as athletes.

Deans and department chairs

These professionals run academic departments or other units within a college. If you have more general questions about your classes, talk to one of them. They can help you solve any small problems before they become big ones.

Writing center

Many colleges offer these free centers where you can get help writing a paper or improving your writing skills. The center is staffed by students who are trained to guide you whether you need broad tips on writing or help with a specific problem.

Tutors and guided study groups

These may be available through the campus learning center or a particular department. They can be a great resource when you need extra help in a class.

Independent study groups

You can join or start study groups with other students. Going over course material with others in your class can help you understand the things you find challenging.

Types of Advisers

Most students get the chance to work with an academic adviser. This type of adviser can tell you which classes you need to take, help you plan a schedule that meets your needs, and guide you when it's time to choose a major. Some academic advisers specialize in specific fields of study, such as biology. Others work with certain groups of students, such as athletes.

Transfer Advising

Most community colleges offer advice to students who plan to transfer to a four-year college after completing the two-year program. If this is your plan, contact your college's transfer advising office before you register for your first classes. The advisers there can help you choose the best classes to prepare for this path. You should also talk to a transfer adviser at the four-year college you want to attend to ensure you take the classes you need and meet any other transfer requirements.

The Undeniable Benefits of Tutoring and How It Helps Your Students

Picture yourself in this scenario: you’re a parent and it’s your child’s first day of school. You send them off with a backpack full of supplies and a lunchbox packed with their favorite foods. You watch them walk through the doors of the school and you can’t help but feel a little anxious.

Will they make friends?

Will they be able to find their way around the school?

Will they be able to keep up with their studies?

As a parent, it’s natural to want the best for your child. One of the best things you can do for them is to ensure that they have access to quality education. But what happens when your child isn’t doing well in school and they’re struggling to keep up with their studies?

When it comes to education, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every student is different and requires varying approaches to learning. While some kids manage to be more self-directed, others may be struggling and need a little extra help to succeed.

That’s where tutoring comes in. Tutoring provides students with the guidance and personal attention they need to succeed in school.

Here’s what you need to know about the benefits of tutoring and how it can give your student a fighting chance.

Statistics on Tutoring Effectiveness

Understanding the available studies on tutoring effectiveness will give you a better idea of how it can benefit your child.

The Demand for Private Tutoring is Massive

According to a report done by the Pew Research Center, the number of students receiving tutoring services has increased significantly over the past few years, mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 1-in-5 upper-income parents have hired a tutor to help their child with distance learning while improving their language, math, and reading skills.

Tutoring Has Been Shown to Increase Test Scores by 12%

A study conducted by the San Bernadino Valley College showed that students who receive face-to-face tutoring classes see an average increase of 12% in their standardized test.

They have been also shown to outperform untutored peers across 45 out of 52 academic subjects, including math, biology, computer science, and chemistry. What’s more, students who were being tutored surpassed their non-tutored peers by nearly 90%. Eight-out-of-ten students who receive tutoring get better grades . Students who have tutoring are more likely to earn higher GPAs and graduate from college.

Benefits of Tutoring

Tutoring has been proven to be an effective way to help students improve their grades and test scores. There’s more to life than grades and tests and school, though, and tutoring has other benefits that can help your child develop into a healthy, well-rounded adult. Here are some of the other benefits tutoring can give your child:

The Student Receives One-on-One Attention

A typical classroom setting can be chaotic, where one teacher juggles the attention of 30 students. It’s no wonder that some students tend to get lost in the shuffle. However one of the benefits of one-on-one tutoring is that your child is the sole focus of the tutor. This allows for a more personalized approach to learning and caters to your child’s specific needs and learning style.

The Learning Process Happens in a Stress-Free Environment

Not all students cope well in a classroom environment. They may feel pressure to keep up with their peers or they may feel like they’re not meeting their teachers’ expectations. Regardless, a benefit of private tutoring is the focus is on them and their needs. This makes for a more relaxed learning environment where your child can learn at their own pace without feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and even frustrated.

Improves the Student’s Attitude Towards Learning

When students are struggling in school, it’s natural for them to develop a negative attitude towards learning because they feel like they’re not good enough. Thankfully, one of the advantages of tutoring is that it helps them see that they’re making progress which can help change their mindset towards learning. They’ll start to see it as a positive and fun experience instead of a frightening chore.

Students Create Better Study Habits

To become better students, they need to form structured study habits. A private tutor will help your child learn how to focus, be organized, and set goals. Building these positive habits at a young age will not only help them succeed academically but in their future careers as well.

Improves Academic Performance

In a meritocratic society, the importance of tutoring has never been more evident. Academic performance is often linked to future success. That’s why it’s important to give your child every advantage you can.

Also, as shown by the statistics, tutoring has been linked to better grades , higher test scores, and even improved attitudes toward learning.

Encourages Self-Directed Learning

Taking the initiative to seek help when they’re stumbling is a fundamental quality for your child to have. It shows that they’re willing to take responsibility for their education and their success.

Tutoring is a great way to encourage self-motivated learning because it gives them the chance to seek out help on their terms. This can lead to a lifelong love of learning and a desire to continue growing and expanding their knowledge.

Prepares Your Student for College and the Workforce

The importance of tutoring doesn’t stop when your child graduates from high school. It can even help them prepare for college and their future career.

A benefit of tutoring in college can help your child continue to hone their study skills, learn how to manage their time, and develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they’ll need in college and beyond.

It can also allow them to explore different career options and get started on their path to success.

Identify Learning Difficulties

Learning difficulties should never be ignored. It can rob a child of their confidence and love for learning. The sooner they’re identified and diagnosed, the sooner you can give your student the support they need. A tutor who specializes in helping kids with special needs can offer the necessary support and accommodations they need to succeed.

Whether they have an autism spectrum disorder or a specific learning disability, a tutor can help them overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.

Improved Confidence and Self-Esteem

Children are often very self-conscious and face a lot of pressure to fit in at a young age. They’re worried about what their classmates think of them and whether or not they’re “smart enough.” This can lead to a lot of anxiety and stress.

Tutoring can help improve your child’s confidence and self-esteem by giving them the chance to thrive in a safe and supportive environment. As they see their grades improve and their skills develop, they’ll start to feel better about themselves.

This newfound confidence can carry over into other areas of their life, such as their social life and extracurricular activities.

How To Know If Your Child Needs a Tutor

Keeping an eye out for signs that your child is struggling in school can help you decide whether or not they need a tutor.

Common Signs Your Child Could Benefit from Tutoring

  • Their grades are gradually falling
  • They’re having difficulty understanding and completing their assignments
  • They’re starting to lose interest in school
  • They seem anxious, stressed, or unmotivated about school
  • They procrastinate or avoid doing their homework
  • Despite studying, they’re still not doing well on tests or quizzes

While every child can benefit from tutoring, if you notice any of these signs, you must take action right away. The sooner you get your child the help they need, the better their chances of success will be.

Find the Right Tutor for Your Child

The benefits of tutoring are evident. From improving academic performance to increasing self-esteem, tutoring can have a profound and lasting impact on your child’s life.

It’s important to remember that not all tutors are created equal. When looking for a tutor, be sure to find one who is experienced, qualified, and has a proven track record of success.

You should also make sure that they’re a good fit for your child’s personality and learning style. Only then will you be able to reap the full benefits of one-on-one tutoring.

How Does Tutoring Help Students Improve Their Grades?

Sam Benezra

Regular tutoring sessions can help students improve their grades in myriad ways. Many students receive occasional homework assistance or one-on-one tutoring, but few build it into their weekly schedule and are tutored on a regular basis.

Effective tutoring is more than just homework help. The best tutors are able to guide their students through the process of learning new information so that they develop problem-solving and thinking skills to succeed independent of tutoring.

Tutoring has been shown to have a significant impact on homework and testing grades, but it also can provide students with intangible benefits, such as a strong work ethic, a better attitude toward challenging subjects, and reduced testing anxiety.

Here’s how tutoring can help students improve their grades and performance in school.

can tutors help with coursework

Coordinating lessons with the school curriculum

One of the main advantages of having private tutoring is getting the opportunity to learn more than the standard course load. With private instruction, students can move ahead in the syllabus and begin working on concepts before the rest of their class does. Getting ahead of the syllabus better prepares students to comprehend difficult concepts when they come up. This will give students an advantage on exams and make it easier to keep up with their peers.

For students who aren’t ready to jump ahead in coursework, tutoring gives students the opportunity to work through concepts that they are struggling with, and can help reinforce those that they feel confident in.

Coordinating tutoring sessions with the school curriculum has been shown to help at-risk students learn and retain concepts . Students with a tendency to fall behind in class will often benefit from the focused guidance that they get in tutoring sessions.

Practicing effective study habits

Tutors not only help students with learning material but also can help students build effective study habits.

“The dictionary defines a tutor as a person who gives an individual, or in some cases a small group, instruction. I am not satisfied with the definition,” Halina Goetz, assistant professor of mathematics at Chapman University, wrote in a blog post . “I would add that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, and to assist or guide them to the point at which they become independent learners, and thus no longer need a tutor.”

In other words, a strong tutor will be able to provide their students with individualized attention as well as strong study habits and comprehension skills that can help students keep up with coursework and material even after they stop taking tutoring.

“Tutoring offers systematic, structured learning experience in a more individualized way,” she added. “It also improves the tutee’s self-esteem, attitude toward subject matter, and academic performance as well as personal growth. In addition to that, tutoring is a self-paced and self-directed learning process.”

There is some evidence that self-discipline — not advanced course material or tutoring — is the most important factor in education. A good tutor, however, will be able to teach students practice and develop skills related to self-discipline and work ethic. These skills can have an enduring effect on a student’s education, and even their post-educational success.

Learning one-on-one

The main advantage of receiving tutoring is the opportunity to consistently work one-on-one with their instructor. Individualized instruction allows students to hone in on areas of strength and weakness across subjects. Experienced tutors know how to work with various types of learners and can adapt their teaching style accordingly. This allows students to learn at a comfortable pace and spend additional time on areas where they struggle.

Various studies have shown that class sizes can raise student test scores and even improve student outcomes down the line. Even group tutoring can help students develop strong skills. In small groups and one-on-one sessions, the focused attention that a tutor can provide has its own advantages.

As Robert Slavin, director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University, noted in a blog post , “The tutoring session, whether one-to-one or one-to-very small group, gives students the undivided attention of a valued adult who can give them personal nurturing and attention to a degree that a teacher with 20-30 students cannot.”

A 2017 study of high school students in poor areas of Chicago showed that one-on-one math tutoring can have significant effects on students’ performance, resulting in higher test scores and grades in math, and fewer failures in math and non-math courses.

Learning from peers

Research-based tutoring methods have been shown to be particularly effective for helping students improve their grades and test scores, and tutoring by teachers and teaching assistants provides students with the most benefit. However, while volunteer tutoring is less effective, primarily due to volunteer programs facing difficulties in having volunteers every day, not all students have such direct access to trained tutors.

Fortunately, peer tutoring, in which students serve as tutors for other students, has been shown to have a positive impact on students of all ages.

One study conducted by doctoral candidates at the University of Arizona demonstrates that peer tutoring can provide various benefits to college students. The study, which followed students in a mathematics course at the university, found that peer tutoring had a significant impact on the students’ final examination scores, independent of gender, SAT score, math placement level, and high school GPA.

There is also evidence that tutoring at a young age can reduce the likelihood of special education referral and help prevent the development of a learning disability.

Assisting with homework

Helping with homework should never be the sole job of a tutor. Goetz noted that in conversations with students who have received tutoring, she found that “many, too many, parents and students equate a tutor with a ‘homework machine.’ ”

“The main goal of tutoring is to help a tutee to become a lifelong independent learner,” she elaborated. “Mimicking the steps shown by a tutor will not help a tutee become an independent learner and will not help the tutee learn critical thinking skills.

It is true that tutoring too often consists purely of homework help. However, assistance with homework can benefit many students who don’t receive assistance with homework from parents, siblings, or peers. Students who don’t receive help at home may struggle compared to peers who do receive some guidance with their homework.

Getting some extra help with homework can instantly help students boost their grades. However, tutors should do more than simply walk their tutees, step-by-step, through problems. Rather, students should expect their tutors to help them work through challenging concepts and to teach them critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will help them work through problems independently.

Learning test-taking strategies

One of the most tangible ways that tutors can help their students improve their grades is by teaching them test-taking techniques and strategies.

Knowledge and mastery of test-taking and problem-solving strategies positively correlate with performance on exams and reduction in test anxiety. Students with less working knowledge of test-taking strategies tend to have worse grades and more test anxiety.

Learning practicable strategies can not only help improve students’ grades, but improve their confidence on exams and help  understand how to work through unfamiliar material.

Improving attitude and perception of school

In addition to the educational benefits of tutoring, there is evidence that direct tutoring can help improve students’ attitude toward the subject matter they cover. The best tutors help their tutees develop a sense of confidence and comfort with academics.

Tutors can teach their students effective procedural learning skills. In other words, a good tutor will show their tutees how to teach themselves. The ability to seek out information, research,  and work through difficult concepts independently are not only valuable educational skills but valuable life skills.

Tutoring can have various benefits for students who are falling behind in class, want to improve their grades, or would like to reinforce their knowledge with test-taking skills. More than just homework help, effective tutoring can help students develop habits and critical thinking capabilities that will last a lifetime.

Cornell Engineering Tutors: Exemplifying the Benefits of One-on-One Support

' src=

“I enjoyed helping other people out, and tutoring also helped me get a stronger hand on the material, which actually helped me in courses I took later on in college.”

We are sending off seven ‘21 graduating Engineers with our utmost gratitude for their exceptional support mentoring students in the Engineering Learning Initiatives (ELI) tutors-on-call program.  Thank you Acacia Tam, Dhruv Sreenivas, Lynn Jeannoute, Michael Richardson, Sijia Liu, Stephie Lux, and Veronica Nobrega for your talent and compassion and a combined 32 semesters tutoring and 852 tutor appointments!  These ELI tutors supported engineering students in 14 challenging core engineering courses.  They participated in 3 tutor trainings and small group check-ins each semester to prepare for and grow in their role as one-on-one peer educators.

Tutor Training

can tutors help with coursework

Trainings focused on active learning strategies for tutors to use in their meetings with tutees.  Tutor community building is important, so when shared dinner during tutor trainings was no longer possible due to transition to online- tutors made connections in a smaller group training format and formed bonds in break-out rooms using the online zoom platform. Throughout this transitional time, ELI tutors relied on one another for support and shared best practices.  Even with success mastering online tutoring, it will be exciting to be back to in-person tutor appointments in the fall.

“I like meeting people and sharing my studying strategies with those eager to learn and improve. I really enjoyed the time being an ELI tutor.”

Benefits for tutees and tutors :

can tutors help with coursework

A key component of all of our peer education programs is the focus on evidence-based practices. Peer education is no longer something that happens on the margins of higher education where ‘at-risk’ students enroll in or are assigned tutorial support.  These days peer education is an opportunity for all learners who anticipate or discover the need for a little more clarity on a particular topic, or a longer-term investment of time to deepen understanding of challenging conceptual or technical knowledge (Latino and Unite, 2012). These opportunities happen with groups of learners, typically associated with a certain course, or as one-on-one interactions through tutoring.

“I loved tutoring for ELI! It was always so rewarding to see that I had helped a student better understand a concept or prepare for an exam. Additionally, it made me happy to see that I could pass on some of the tips and tricks I had learned while taking the class to other students. Finally, I loved meeting new people whether in person or online! It made me feel more connected to the Cornell community!”

Tutoring requires all the components of other student academic support including collaboration, retrieval (pulling information out of students rather than putting it in) and open-ended questions to generate reflection, metacognition and critical thought.  There are some unique opportunities in this valuable type of support.

The Role of ‘Coach’

The very personal nature of a tutor session creates a great opportunity for tutors to mentor and coach students regarding practices that generally improve student outcomes. Research has shown that helping with study behaviors was a significant factor improving student outcomes (Gurung and McCann, 2011).

can tutors help with coursework

“The classes I tutored were geared towards mostly freshman year students and I know how hard it can be transitioning from high school to college, so I especially valued not only being able to assist in their coursework but being able to give them general advice on how to study for exams and stay on top of their work and things like that.”

As coaches, our undergraduate tutors: keep a growth mindset, listen to student challenges, and suggest various ways to overcome them. They ask the right questions, inquire about preparation for evaluations, suggest study practices, encourage, and give specific feedback. Research on the role of peer coaching in higher education suggests that some effective strategies are: being nonjudgmental, listening, shared accountability for the interaction, and asking questions (Ericksen et al 2020).

“I can very effectively help others break down an academic problem, and I have also found new ways to be creative when communicating and teaching. Beyond developing my teaching skills, I made several lasting friendships with students I tutored and with  other tutors. ELI Peer Tutoring was a very important part of my Cornell Engineering experience.”

As peers, tutors help build community one student at a time by developing acquaintances and friendships, finding common ground, s haring empathy, working together on a l evel playing field, and sharing academic and social challenges.

The quotes shared by these tutors exemplify the practices that make tutoring a very powerful form of academic support.  Mentoring students who are just learning to navigate busy schedules and challenging assignments, building community, and breaking down complex ideas using active, collaborative learning, are practices that benefit both the tutor and tutee.  We are so grateful for the hard work of these graduates.  In the past year tutors had to become comfortable working with their peers remotely due to COVID-19.  We are so proud and grateful for the difference ELI tutors made for students finding their way during this very unusual and difficult past year!

Do You Need Homework Help or a Tutor?

Are you struggling with a school homework assignment or to understand a concept in class? It’s not uncommon for students to have difficulty understanding subject matter. Tutors can help you get that extra attention you need to better understand your coursework and excel with your assignments.

The question is: do you need homework help, or do you need tutoring?

Homework Help vs Tutoring: What’s the Difference?

At some point, most students will need help understanding a subject or a certain concept. Some need just a little help completing an assignment, while others need more in-depth help.

There’s a difference between needing help with homework and help from a tutor.

Homework Help

Homework help is more specialized than tutoring. When students need help completing a certain assignment, they may just need homework help. This assistance is specific to the chapter and subject matter covered by the assignment.

The student will receive guidance or help completing the assignment, and that’s the extent of the assistance. The person helping out with the assignment will also ensure that the student understands the subject matter covered in the homework assignment.

When it’s Useful

Jodie is having trouble completing a history assignment. A tutor helps guide her through the assignment and clears up confusion about the part of the subject matter that’s making it difficult for her to complete it.

Jodie’s difficulty is directly related to the homework assignment itself. Outside of this assignment, she’s not having any issues grasping concepts. Once the homework assignment is complete, she may never need to work with the tutor again.

can tutors help with coursework

When a student is having trouble understanding a subject, a tutor may step in to help. The student may be failing a subject or just having trouble keeping up with the subject matter. They may be having trouble understanding multiple concepts and are generally falling behind.   The frustration felt by a student who is struggling to understand the general direction of a course and who is falling behind in their work can be devastating to their motivation and self-confidence as a learner.   It is important to recognize this and move forward with a plan for tutoring which can help boost morale .

Max has been falling behind in Algebra. He’s failed his last two tests and hasn’t been doing well on his homework assignments. He’s having trouble catching up because he’s confused about many of the concepts in the curriculum.

A tutor will work with Max over several sessions to help him understand concepts that he doesn’t understand. The tutor will provide one-on-one instruction and will continue to work with Max until his grades improve and he’s caught up. Each lesson will build on the previous lesson with Max’s frustration lessening and his confidence in his ability to learn the material increasing.

Tutoring is very similar to classroom instruction, but it’s on a more personal level. Because tutoring sessions occur at regular intervals, this one-on-one help is essential to a struggling, frustrated student. Tutoring sessions could be daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.   Whatever it takes for your student to learn and grow should be the goal.

Which One Do You Need?

Do you need homework help or tutoring? The answer is simpler than you think. Ask yourself the following:

  • ➡ Am I only struggling with this one assignment?
  • ➡ Am I having trouble keeping up with the rest of the class?
  • ➡ Is this a subject that I normally struggle with and could use more one-on-one instruction?

If you’re only having difficulty with one assignment and one small area of the subject matter, you may just need some homework help. A tutor can provide one or two sessions to provide more personal instruction to help you understand the concepts covered in the assignment.

However, if you’re struggling with a subject overall, tutoring may be required. Tutoring will provide more in-depth instruction with structured lessons on a regular basis.

Here’s a simplified explanation:

  • ➡ Homework help is short-term academic assistance.
  • ➡ Tutoring is long-term support on a regular basis. It’s typically focused on one subject, but multiple subjects can be covered if necessary.

How Does Tutoring Help Students Achieve More?

Mother help girl doing homework at home

There are many benefits of tutoring that go beyond the obvious advantage of supporting a student in learning about a challenging subject. Tutoring changes the academic landscape for your child, allowing them to achieve more, build empowering work and study habits, and gain confidence by overcoming obstacles.

Tutoring services provide a one-on-one approach that focuses fully on the student’s personal growth and improving academic performance. Working with a tutor can fully engage a student’s passion for subjects of strength as well as helping students feel comfortable with subject matters they find difficult.

The Empowering Benefits of Tutoring

Every student has unique strengths and challenges that can create gaps in their education due to differences in teaching or learning styles. Tutoring helps students learn at their own pace and in a way that aligns with their natural skills. The full picture of the benefits of tutoring may surprise you.

Changing Academic Direction

One purpose of tutoring is to reverse a concerning trend in your child’s attitude about learning or academic performance. With one-on-one attention from a tutor with expertise in the coursework, challenging subjects become easier to understand. Individualized learning plans and activities provide a concrete way to get back on track. Information can be presented in ways that align with the student’s natural learning style, and feedback is immediate and positive.

Filling Gaps in Previous Education

Students might have missed foundational classes or school work due to medical challenges or family obligations and need help to catch up to their current coursework. Changing from one school to another might leave gaps based on the timing of teaching certain concepts. Tutoring sessions can address any missing pieces in the foundation that are keeping a student from fully understanding their current assignments.

Preparing for Upcoming Challenges

Tutoring can also be proactive in preparing your child for difficult concepts on the horizon. By working slightly ahead of their classmates with the extra attention from a dedicated tutor, anxiety about exams, projects, and upcoming challenges can be relieved entirely. Looking ahead can also foster curiosity and self-directed learning rather than waiting for work to be assigned.

Improving Work and Study Skills

Teenage boy sitting in a wheelchair writing in a notebook with a female teacher

Feeling prepared and confident about the subject at hand helps a young person be a better student. They can be encouraged to verbalize their own thinking skills and ask relevant questions in the classroom. Tutoring improves social and study skills and retention of difficult concepts. Persistence and independence are values that can be more easily recognized and rewarded during tutoring sessions.

Going Above and Beyond

By promoting success in every student and working at the pace which challenges them, tutors can help young people go beyond the ordinary level of proficiency. With self-directed learning and a sense of control over their own success, tutored students gain the opportunity to do more than their peers and acquire the attitude to match. When standard coursework does not challenge your child, tutoring can open the door for them to explore and advance their own love of learning outside the classroom.

Creating a Positive Learning Space

One of the advantages of tutoring is that it is fully focused on the needs of the student. Many students find a large classroom environment to be distracting, disruptive, or in some other way less than ideal for learning. With a one-to-one tutoring environment, students can more easily overcome learning or attention challenges and achieve their best in a positive learning space ideal for them. Virtual tutoring even allows students to tackle problem areas and engage with their tutor from the security and comfort of their own home.

Fostering Confidence and Social Success

Confidence comes from feeling prepared for the known and the unknown. Succeeding at something difficult while learning work and study skills sets students on the path to expect more of themselves and take on greater responsibilities and goals. Achieving academic success and stepping confidently into college with the right resources and know-how may be one of the greatest gifts you can give a young person on the cusp of independence.

Choosing the Best Tutoring Options

Students examining DNA model in classroom laboratory

The best tutoring services pair students with core faculty members who are an instructor of record with an accredited middle or high school. These tutors should be immersed in their subjects and able to flex their teaching styles to fully engage and motivate each individual learner. Tutors with the full range of training and resources behind them can more effectively enhance your child’s education.

What If Tutoring Is Not Enough?

If your child is too far behind on a subject for tutoring to allow them to catch up and receive a good grade, there are other supplemental education options to consider. One of these is a Courses on Demand program. Often used for College Prep, Advanced Placement, or Honors classes, Courses on Demand allow students to take or retake a course outside of normal school hours, either in person or online.

Explore Tutoring and Courses on Demand with Lydian Academy

Why Tutor, Teacher and Student Relationships Are Crucial

What is Giving Compass?

We connect donors to learning resources and ways to support community-led solutions. Learn more about us .

Teachers need to know both about their students, and they gather both types of information every day in their classrooms. But there’s a way to get them even more of this essential data.

Around the country, districts and states are turning to high-impact tutoring, whether as part of the school day or afterschool, to reverse severe declines in reading and math scores since the pandemic.  Tennessee  has invested a lot of money and resources into this effort, and  Illinois  is marching down the same path.

What makes tutoring  high-impact ? According to the  National Student Support Accelerator , it involves substantial time each week, sustained and strong relationships between students and tutors, close monitoring of student knowledge and skills alignment to school curriculum, and oversight to ensure quality interactions.

With feedback from a tutor, teacher/student conversations are more productive because the teacher can speak directly to what the student did well or struggled with during tutoring. Having a tutor’s feedback also means teachers spend less time teasing insights out of data. For example, a single note from a tutor is a much more efficient way of discovering students’ misconceptions than asking a teacher to dig through pages of data.

That’s the quantitative part. But there are also insights into how students are learning, feeling and doing — the qualitative piece — that tutors can gain insight to, and that can help teachers understand their students better.

Tutors, armed with appropriate curriculum, can not only help students make academic progress; they can offer teachers more of the kind of data that helps them build strong relationships with their class. Students, like all humans, are motivated to work hard for someone they have a connection with, so any solution for improving academic outcomes needs to have relationships at its center.

Princeton Review just might be the perfect fit for high school students looking for help with their writing skills.

Whether they're looking for help on a book report, a research paper, an admissions essay, or something else, they can call on these tutors 24/7 to polish writing skills. Even better: Princeton Review's instructors are categorized by topic, so students can specifically search for tutors with expertise in whatever subject help is needed.

Rather than negotiating rates with individual tutors, Princeton Review offers several different pricing plans, including monthly subscriptions with a set number of hours per month or a more flexible plan allowing access anytime.

Monthly packages range from about $40 for one hour to roughly $340 for 10 hours per month, while six-month flex plans run from approximately $350 for 10 hours ($35 per hour) to around $1,450 for 50 hours ($29 per hour).

These flex plans allow students to log on at any time during the six months, and a session can be as short or as long as they want.

Best for Transparent Pricing : Skooli

  • Price: Starts at $0.82 a minute with pay-as-you-go; as low as $0.65 a minute if you prepay 32 hours

15 minute minimum

No student-tutor relationship, since you’ll book as needed

Since Skooli offers tutoring in plenty of different subjects, you’re likely to be able to find writing tutors who can help tailor your essays to the specific needs of your subject. Writing a history research paper is very different from writing a literary analysis, and you can browse Skooli’s wide range of tutors to find one with the background and expertise to help with your specific project.

You can use Skooli as a long-term tutoring option—either with one specific instructor or different ones each time students log on—but it’s also designed for in-the-moment queries. The pricing structure reflects that: Skooli charges around $1 per minute rather than monthly or even hourly rates, so all time is accounted for while learning.

For the most part, tutors on Skooli are well-vetted and experienced and hold degrees and teaching certifications, so students can be sure that every minute spent will further their knowledge.

Best National : Kaplan

  • Price: Courses start at $549 (ACT prep) and $1,100 (LSAT prep)
  • Grade Level: From high school admissions through career advancement
  • Frequency: Varies by course

Kaplan is widely known and trusted for online tutoring, and offers test prep tutoring from high school admissions tests through college admissions tests and beyond.

Robust offering

Help for specific tests

Widely known and trusted brand

Not much offered beyond test prep courses

Not for basic writing tutoring

Kaplan's name and its test prep formulas are top of the line. For students looking for private or group tutoring to prepare for a standardized test or entrance exam, Kaplan’s tutoring program is one of the most comprehensive.

Students can sign up for small-group remote classes with experienced teachers or enroll in private, one-on-one tutoring. Tutoring sessions are highly structured, including multiple full-length practice tests and in-depth explanations for scores. It’s as close as it gets to taking the test before you actually take it.

While a good portion of the tutoring focuses on the multiple-choice sections of these tests, Kaplan tutors also work with students to improve their writing skills and help them learn what the test review boards are looking for in each individual exam. The platform is for serious, long-term tutoring with highly experienced tutors and exclusive materials, not one-time sessions, and the prices reflect that.

Prices vary depending on which test you’re preparing for. If you're prepping for the ACT, you can enroll in an online class with top ACT teachers for $549. If you want one-on-one tutoring, options start at $749. If you're prepping for the LSAT, they offer a live online course for $1,100 and one-on-one tutoring plus a live online course starting at $1,999.

Best for Creative Writing : Wyzant

  • Price: Starts at $25 an hour
  • Grade Level: All, plus adults

Wyzant allows you to search for tutors in your subject matter of interest, including both gen-eds and more creative classes.

Ability to search for the type of tutor you want

Search within your price range

24/7 access to tutors

Experience is specific to the tutor you choose

Site does not have tutors adhere to a specific methodology

No tutor/student relationship, as sessions are one-off and as-needed

While the majority of tutoring sites focus more on straightforward academics, Wyzant also includes creative writing tutors. Whether you’re a student working on an English class assignment, a creative writing major looking for a little extra guidance, or just someone wanting to dig into creative writing on your own time, there’s likely an instructor for you.

The site filters tutors by broad subject area and then by narrower expertise. Prospective students can view a tutor’s profile, rating, and hourly rate before reaching out. Many of the site’s creative writing tutors have advanced degrees or professional experience, so you can be sure you’re getting genuine expert help.

Wyzant gives students and tutors a lot of leeway to negotiate their own relationships, both in the classroom and in terms of rates. Tutors set their own fees (the average is between about $25 and $65 per hour, although there are plenty of tutors above and below that range), and the platform offers a one-hour guarantee: the first hour lesson with a new tutor is guaranteed to be a success, or it’s free. It’s a great way to dip your toe in and get help honing your craft.

Best for Professional Writing : Business Writing Center

  • Price: $69 up to $595
  • Grade Level: Adult
  • Frequency: Self-paced for four months

Business Writing Center caters specifically to professionals by teaching business writing for reports, proposals, and other important work writing.

Specifically for business professionals

Classes for non-native speakers available

Self-paced classes may not be for everyone

Greater fee for individualized courses

Business Writing Center (BWC) isn’t your typical tutoring service.

Rather than aiming its services at secondary school-aged students, the site is geared toward business professionals looking to brush up their writing skills. While some of the offerings are more suitable for business people whose first language isn’t English, there are options for one-on-one tutoring and feedback on professional reports, proposals, and other important work documents.

Rather than hourly tutoring, BWC offers its tutoring services through “coaching” courses. The company has a few different specialties, including document writing, coaching for executive writing, and a more general individual training option.

Self-paced courses start at $69, go up to $595, and can last up to four months. They allow students to work on real-world writing projects and get personalized feedback from an experienced teacher.

An online writing tutor can help students and professionals alike brush up on their writing skills so that their finished writing projects are more successful. Since you can access these tutors from anywhere, they can accommodate most schedules and learning rhythms. We chose Chegg Study as the best overall online tutoring service because it's affordable, convenient, and offers a range of writing tutoring options.

What Is an Online Writing Tutoring Service?

An online writing tutoring service is a website or platform that connects students with writing tutors, completely online and remote. These companies may be geared toward a specific grade level or type of writing, or they may be a more general platform to connect students and tutors.

A research study found that students who sought the help of tutors in writing the second draft of essays progressed more and scored higher on their second drafts than those who did not seek help. The same study found that students who used online tutoring services in addition to in-person tutoring in their school’s writing center scored even higher than those who did not take advantage of online tutoring services.

How Much Do Online Writing Tutoring Services Cost?

Online writing tutoring services cover a wide range of prices. In general, there are two basic models: pay-per-session or subscription. For the former, students pay for access each time they use the service for tutoring help. For the latter, students pre-pay for a package that spans a certain amount of time, number of sessions, or even a mini-course that also includes one-on-one tutoring time. Many tutoring services charge $1 per minute or $35 to $60 per hour. Monthly packages can range from about $69 to thousands of dollars.

What Can You Learn From a Professional Writing Tutoring Session?

Adult professionals can expect to gain practical skills they can apply directly to the writing they do in their chosen profession. Some of those skills may include document writing, executive writing, using basic grammar and sentence structure, and writing for non-native speakers of English.

Online writing tutors may also look over previously written documents and provide edits and/or suggestions to help you polish them.

What Features Do Online Writing Tutoring Services Have?

Every tutoring service structures its offerings a little differently, and each tutor may have their own particular style of teaching. That being said, these platforms are usually based around chat functions, either video/audio or text-based (or some combination of both), and many services have some type of screen-sharing and document-sharing capabilities.

Most online writing tutors will focus on helping students apply their knowledge in a practical sense. While some might have pre-planned assignments to develop particular skills (more common in specialized subjects like creative writing or test prep), other instructors prefer to have students come prepared with an assignment they need help with and give feedback to strengthen it.

Online writing tutoring doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and we’ve tried to make selecting an instructor as easy as possible. Because “writing” is such a broad skill applied to so many different settings, we’ve sorted out some of the categories that we think will be the most useful to the largest number of students. The platforms here range from specialized expertise in niches like business writing and test prep to more general essay-writing assistance.

Students seeking a writing tutor may want a long-term preparatory course or help with an individual essay. With this in mind, we’ve included a wide range of specialties and, more importantly, price points, from pay-per-minute instant feedback to formal, highly researched, long-term prep classes that cost significantly more over the course of several months.

Coursework and Private Tuition

18th December 2015 1:00 By Blue Tutors

Despite changes to the curriculum which have made exams the main form of assessment for many courses, coursework still plays a significant role in both arts and science subjects. It is very common for parents to a tutor’s help with coursework, whether they already had a tutor to help generally with the subject, or whether they hire a tutor specifically to help with coursework. Tutors can help explain the course content, and encourage students to develop their ideas, but when helping specifically with coursework, there is a limit to how much they should really help. Despite guidelines offered by schools, the reality is that the practice of private tuition and coursework can be very murky indeed. One of the consequences of the tuition industry being largely unregulated is that there are no rules for tutors when deciding how much to help their students with coursework. Of course the exam board sets guidelines as to the guidance that teachers can give, but if a tutor misinterprets or ignores these guidelines there are few consequences for them. Some tutors have their own strict policies regarding this issue, and will simply not help with coursework at all. This is a clear way to ensure that they are not breaking any rules, and will also shield students from any suggestion that they violated the exam board’s policy. Others will provide general help, and will allow students to discuss their ideas with them. However, there are some parents who expect tutors to provide more help than the regulations permit, and feel that in paying for private tuition they are circumventing the problem of teachers not being able to give extensive help with coursework. This can put tutors in a difficult position. Some tutors deal with this by stating at the outset that they do not help with coursework, whilst others approach the issue on a case by case basis. Sadly, there are some tutors who will provide help far beyond the allowances made by the exam board regulations in exchange for the right fee. What tutors and parents need to remember is that whilst there is nothing wrong in allowing students to discuss their ideas and explaining difficult concepts to them, doing work for them will not help them learn, and may jeopardise their entire result.

Help with coursework

Tutors can:

  • Advise on research for coursework
  • Help with grammar/ structure/ style
  • Supervise your coursework

Tutors will not:

  • Write your coursework
  • Edit your coursework
  • Write 'model' answers

We frequently receive requests for help with coursework. In cases where you are struggling with some work and looking for tuition related to that work, we do encourage you to seek for help on our website.

If you are an international student and need help starting your studies at a UK university the tutors can introduce you to the structure of essays and help boost your grammar and style.

However, it has come to our attention that there are a growing number of requests containing offers to write coursework for money. We want to emphasise that our service operates to enable people to find tutors, not to cheat on coursework which we consider unethical.

We will not facilitate attempts to cheat on your coursework by offering to pay one of the tutors on the website to complete it for you. We monitor closely all such attempts for trying to get around the system with a potential permanent restriction of your usage of our website and its services. We also ban tutors purporting to offer such services.

First Tutors uses cookies to improve your experience and monitor our service.

UCSD Honors Student for Math, Programming, and Chemistry Tutoring Matthew Z.

187 hours tutoring, ucsd honors student for math, programming, and chemistry tutoring ucsd honors student for math, programming, and chemistry tutoring matthew z., about matthew.

Hi, I'm Matt! I am a fourth-year at UCSD and I am looking to help high schoolers with their science and math coursework during this time of difficulty. As COVID-19 has caused many schools to turn to online learning, I understand that many educators are having trouble adapting their curriculum to fit online learning. Having experienced this first hand, I can relate to the frustration of instructors being unclear or unhelpful during online classes.

Regarding my experience, I volunteered as...

Regarding my experience, I volunteered as an after-school tutor during my off-season and working as a freelance tutor for 2 years, I am experienced in working with high schoolers.

Throughout high school, I got A's in all my math classes. Having exhausted all my high school's math courses, I took Calculus 2 and 3 at my local community college.

In addition to biology and chemistry being strongly connected to my college major, I am experienced, having tutored many students in high school in mostly AP Chemistry. In addition, I received 5's on both these exams and As in their respective classes.

As of recently, I have switched my major to computer engineering. As a result, I am well-versed in OOP, including Java.

I want to make my student's learning experience as fruitful and enjoyable as possible and am open to any suggestions. As I am always home, I am always easy to reach and will respond to any message within an hour or less. Feel free to contact me to schedule a lesson or if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you!
