In this study, a cost-effective two-axis CNC lathe workbench was designed and manufactured as a prototype in order to be used for training purposes at vocational and technical schools. The workbench is at 950, 600, 500 mm (X, Y, Z) exterior dimensions, it can process the cylindrical pieces of 30 mm in diameter and 150 mm in lenght at most. The workbench frame was manufactured by joining cast polyamide materials of 27 mm in thickness with bolts. The workbench frame was also encircled with a cabin composed of 25x25 square profiles, increasing the labor security of the staff and students working on the bench. On the workbench axis, threaded rods, ball nuts and linear roller bearings were used. Necessary electronic hardware was designed and manufactured in order to control the workbench axis movements and spindle speed through computer screen. Mach3 was preferred as control software. Processing parameters and commands for the workbench are entered via computer screen. The control panel on the workbench manually enables the execution of Spindle Speed Controls, Energy Start-Stop, Emergency Stop and Tailstock Movement and Cooling Liquid On-Off functions. Because the workbench was designed for training purposes, a webcam was connected to the system to be able to monitor the process on the computer screen. A cooling liquid system was also installed on the workbench.

Computer Numeric Control is the automation of machine tools which are operated by Numerical commands. It enables better manufactured product by reducing the number of steps involved and time taken in manufacturing. The current work uses the codes available in CNC technology to control the machining variables on a self-built 2 ½ axis machine. 2 ½ axis implies the controlled motion is along 2 axes (X and Y) and along motion of tool spindle that moves in the Z (depth). The position of the tool is driven by direct-drive stepper motor in order to provide highly accurate movements. Machine is built on a dimensionally stable platform and the parts on which machining is performed are bolted using clamps and bolts. Finally, using the open source Arduino interface and CNC shield this machine is brought to life. The scope of the current work aims to present a working model of the CNC machine which can be used for light drilling, milling operations on pieces of wood.

Micro Factory represents an entirely new approach to design and manufacture which minimizes production systems to match the size of the parts they produce. The micro-lathe was one of key components in "Micro-factories" claiming "small machine tools for small mechanical parts”. There is an alternative to manufacture micro-components by micro-machine tools and micro-manipulators using conventional mechanical techniques. The machine tools should withstand at higher cutting speeds and operate at high acceleration and deceleration with high quality at lower cost. To achieve high performance, the static stiffness of the machine tool should be increased and moving mass to be reduced. In this study we design and manufacture a prototype of an inexpensive LabVIEW controlled micro-lathe. This will facilitate the micro-machine tool education in India as these activities become active and also replace the conventional Micro-lathe material bed by E-Glass/Epoxy bed to obtain superio...

In India power cut is big problem also having many remote places where electricity not reached and that will affect many small scale business and ongoing work, like Carpentry, ongoing work got stop because of power cut. To overcome this problem manually operated economical; conceptual model of a machine which would be capable of performing different operation like sawing/cutting and grinding without use of power i.e. wood working machine is introduced. In this paper, design concept and fabrication of manually operated wood sawing/cutting machine is explained. It is designed and fabricated so portable that it can be move and used at various places. It is used for sawing/cutting of wood, plywood, thin metals (<=2mm), and pvc pipes. The material can be cut without any external energy like fuel or current. As machine uses no electric power and fuel, this will help to maintain green environment. The observations show that power required for pedaling is well below the capacity of an average healthy human being.

In general, the log-block peeling yield on a rotary lathe machine ranges from 70 - 80% of the log volume in the form of veneer, and the remaining 20-30% is waste. This variation depends on the quality and type (species) of the log of the raw material. The veneer peeling usually consist of the face and back veneer (continuous veneer) ranging from 50% to 70% and core veneer as poly piece veneer ranging from 20 to 30%. Under certain conditions, the waste can reach up to 50% including losses due to rounding, shrinkage of the veneer, cracks, spurs, and pith (log-core). From the description above and several other observations, the research was carried out regarding this matter. There is a way to reduce the amount of waste in log peeling using rotary machines and at the same time increasing the recovery peeling. Thus, it will reduce production costs and increase profits for the company. One of the contributors to a large amount of veneer peeling waste is the use of rotary lathe veneer pee...

Design and Fabrication of Mini Wood Lathe Machine

Modelling the dependence between regular reliefs ridges height and the ball burnishing regime’s parameters for 2024 aluminum alloy processed by using cnc-lathe machine, modeling and analysis of surface roughness with statistical and soft computing approach.

The objective of this study focuses on developing empirical prediction models using response regression analysis and fuzzy-logic. These models latter can be used to predict surface roughness according to technological variables. The values of surface roughness produced by these models are compared with experimental results. Experimental investigation has been carried out by using scientific composite factorial design on precision lathe machine with tungsten carbide inserts. Surface roughness measured at end of each experimental trial (three times), to get the effect of machining conditions and tool geometry on the surface finish values. Research showed that soft computing fuzzy logic model developed produces smaller error and has satisfactory results as compared to response regression model during machining.

Research on the teaching numerical lathe machine based on mach3.

According to the demands of teaching, it is designed and manufactured that a new visual model of CNC turning lathe with assembles the horizontal bed and inclined bed in one. As it can display the structure of CNC lathe directly and intuitively, the model can be used for the teaching of CNC courses. The model has micro-switch, which can be used to control the movement of the workplace, and the automatic feed strokes of the tool, thus avoiding the collisions during manufacturing. Meanwhile, the test proved that it can cut the nylon, wood, engineering plastics and so on, so this model can satisfy the demands of teaching.

Analysis of material removal rate and surface roughness varing parameters from cnc lathe machine, lathe machine electrical maintenance control device based on wireless network, optimization of mrr and surface roughness of almg3 (aa5754) alloy in cnc lathe machine by using taguchi method.

Quality of the product is the major concern in manufacturing industries from customers as well as producers point of view. There are number of factors in the product such as surface condition, height, weight, length, width etc., which may be consider for the measurement of the quality. Surface roughness and Metal Removal Rate (MRR) are the two main outcomes on which numerous researchers have applied different approaches for several years to get optimum results. In this study, Taguchi Method is applied for getting optimum parameters settings for Surface roughness and Metal Removal Rate (MRR) in case of turning AlMg3 (AA5754) in CNC Lathe machine, which is an aluminum alloy having diameter 20 mm and length 100 mm. The three parameters i.e. spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut with 3 levels are taken as the process variables and the working ranges of these parameters for conducting experiments are selected based on Taguchi’s L9 Orthogonal Array (OA) design. To analyze the significant process parameters; main effect plots for data means and for S/N ratio are generated using Minitab statistical software.

Mini Lathe Machine

Dimensions: 15 x 40 x 10 Centimeters A lathe machine is used for rotating a workpiece in order to perform sanding, cutting, drilling, knurling and turning operations on the workpiece. Lathes have been used on woodworking, metal parts and also on plastic nylon parts for a long time in the industry. So here we study the design and fabrication of a mini lathe machine. Our machine consists of a motor with belt arrangement used to drive the lathe chuck. The machine consists of a bed with a movable arrangement. It consists of a holder in order to hold the desired tool in desired position. We use a chuck attached to the spindle shaft in order to run the motor. Our motor once powered transmits this power to the spindle through a belt mechanism, which is then used to rotate the chuck. This rotates the workpeice in chuck. The machine is built to hold and rotate the workpeice and move the tool in a sliding mechanism, so as to achieve the desired operations. The machine outer frame is designed to hold the workpeice firmly with tool in place so as to achieve desired operations with ease. Thus we successfully study the design and fabrication.

Where Precision Meets Unbeatable Laughs in the Workshop

best mini wood lathe

Evaluating 8 Mini Wood Lathes: Small Size, Big Woodworking Impact

After putting 8 mini wood lathes to the test, I’ve found that the RIKON Mini Wood Lathe is the best option for beginner and intermediate users.

My choice was rooted in my professional woodworking background, where I learned my trade, practiced on-site construction, and built countless outdoor structures using lathes, drills, kumiko jigs , and much more.

So, why the RIKON?

Its advantages boil down to a small but convincing list, including a fast and powerful motor, adjustable speed, and a rock-solid design.

But, the story doesn’t end there!

For price, ease of use, or an extra-small build, I have some other options to recommend.

Read the rest of the guide for my top 8 choices, where I also give a handy guide for picking the best lathe for your workshop.

Mini Wood Lathes – Summary Table

8 best mini wood lathes.

If you’re still choosing a mini wood lathe and stuck in a rut, check out my list of the 8 best lathes, beginning with my favorite:

1. RIKON Mini Wood Lathe – Best Overall

RIKON Power Tools 70-105 10' x 18' 1/2 hp Mini Lathe

Targeted at both casual and experienced woodworking users, the RIKON Mini Wood Lathe has a few key advantages that secured its spot at the top of my list:

  • Powerful motor. Built with a 0.5 HP motor, the RIKON wood lathe has enough power to make it a strong choice for more intensive woodworking goals, like turning furniture.
  • Secure build. The lathe has a highly sturdy design made from cast iron, so it will prevent vibration (a factor notorious for leading to inaccurate turning, which in the past has ruined more than a few of my pen projects!)
  • Variable speed. With five adjustable speed settings, the machine can be manually customized to work with different projects, giving it a flexibility that’s indispensable for woodworkers who like to branch out.

2. WEN 3421 Mini Benchtop Wood Lathe – Best for Ease of Use

WEN LA3421 3.2-Amp 8-Inch by 13-Inch Variable Speed Mini Benchtop Wood Lathe , Black

Ease of use and assembly is a critical component of a decent beginner wood lathe, and the WEN 3421 Mini Benchtop seems practical tailor-made for that purpose:

  • Intuitive assembly. Due to its straightforward design and helpful instructions, the WEN mini lathe is very easy to put together, which will keep beginners from quitting on account of a high entry barrier.
  • Basic feature set. The machine disregards fancy bells and whistles, instead focusing on quality core parts, making it ideal for those still getting a hang of the basics.
  • Smooth learning curve. While I was already plenty experienced in wood lathes, I couldn’t help but think while using this one that it would be a breeze for a beginner to learn!

As I’ve come to expect, there were also some downsides:

For one, the motor heats up extremely quickly. This led to me having to regularly take breaks to give it a chance to cool off, impeding my workflow and speed.

Plus, even for mini machines, the WEN is fairly limited in project size. Pens or cups are no problem, of course, but once I started moving on to bigger pieces like furniture, the limitations became starkly apparent.

3. UOKRR Mini Wood Lathe Machine – Most Secure Design

UOKRR Mini Wood Lathe Machine for Woodworking 1/3 Horsepower Benchtop Wood Lathe 8” x 12” Wood Turning Lathe Infinitely Variable Speed 750-3200rpm for Beginners/Professionals to Make Pens, Bowls, Cups

A stable and securely-assembled mini lathe is crucial both for safety and functionality, and the UOKRR Mini Wood Lathe shines in that area:

  • Material sturdiness. Made with cast iron parts, I was enormously impressed with the complete vibration-less stability of the lathe, which eliminated precision concerns.
  • Tool rests. The UOKRR includes two tool rests, increasing guidance and stability for the spindle and improving overall accuracy.
  • Compact design. Weighing in at a light 44 lbs, the machine is small even for mini lathes; an excellent quality if portability is a top priority for you.

My chief complaint while using the lathe was power inefficiency. The tool quickly ran out of juice even on low-intensity projects, which ended up making some builds very difficult to work with productively.

4. Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe – Best for Accessory Choices

Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe - Cast Iron Mini Wood Lathe Turn Bowls 10” & Spindles 17-3/4' in – Mini Lathe Machine for Wood for Chair Legs, Small Table Legs, & Decorative Woodturning - Turning Machine

Miniature wood lathes rarely include everything they need to operate at optimal conditions.

The Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe addresses that problem by focusing on compatibility and extensibility:

  • Compatible accessories. The Excelsior easily works with helpful additional tools like an extension bed, talon chuck, and duplicator attachments. This makes it a particularly appealing option from the viewpoint of customization and adjustability.
  • Lightweight. Since the machine is compact and light, it can easily be integrated into a multi-tool woodworking workflow without taking up too much physical space.
  • Speed settings. Testing the 5 built-in speed settings, I was satisfied with the ability to adjust work speed, as that’s a crucial element for turning different types of wood objects.

Major weak points for me were the weaker motor and lack of durability (causing some minor parts to occasionally detach.)

Both problems sort of “ganged up” on me and froze work progress while I either had to wait for the motor to cool off, reattach a loose screw, or both.

5. JET JWL-1015VS – Best for Speed Control

JET 10' x 15' Variable-Speed Woodworking Lathe, 1/2 HP, 1Ph 115V (Model JWL-1015VS)

A smooth, effective, and easy-to-use variable speed mechanism is critical for a quality mini lathe.

The JET JWL-1015VS incorporates that mechanism, along with other perks, through its features:

  • 3 speed ranges. Rather than having 5 static settings like other lathes on this list, the JET instead provides 3 ranges, with a dial to fine tune the exact speed within those ranges; I was glad to see this gave me much more control over speed and workflow.
  • Easy tool access. Both the power switch and the speed dial are conveniently located within reach right on the side of the machine, aiding in both ease of use and safety.
  • High accuracy. This lathe is precise and exact, making the final product look more professional and well-crafted.

While working, there were several points where I would have liked a reverse mechanism, which the JET neglects.

The motor was also a bit unstable, and there were a couple of times where I had to power the machine down and turn it back on to get the motor running properly.

6. PROXXON MICRO Woodturning Lathe – Most Compact Build

PROXXON MICRO Woodturning Lathe DB 250, 37020 , Green

For those with limited workspace or who need a portable lathe machine, the PROXXON MICRO Woodturning Lathe is a good bet:

  • Size. Due to its ultra-lightweight design (weighing in at 5.74 lbs), the PROXXON is more or less unmatchable when it comes to portability and storage freedom.
  • Ideal for small designs. The micro-sized build is perfect for smaller, more intricate designs like pens and rings. I used it to make a ring during testing, and the quality was certainly on the higher end.
  • Low volume. An often-overlooked but very pleasant feature in lathes: The machine is quiet! Even at maximum speed, the motor doesn’t make much noise, which is good news for woodworkers with neighbors or who like to work at night.

I wasn’t so enthusiastic about the PROXXON’s unsecure tailstock, which constantly shook and bounced while I was using the lathe.

Additionally, I didn’t much care for tool rest. The screws for the rest stripped after a few uses, so replacement was a minor headache I had to deal with.

7. SHOP FOX W1704 – Most Affordable

SHOP FOX W1704 1/3-Horsepower Benchtop Lathe

Though we all wish budget wasn’t a factor in choosing a lathe, it unfortunately always seems to manage to creep up on us!

Luckily, the SHOP FOX W1704 provides a much-appreciated and affordable pick:

  • Price. The SHOP FOX is on the lower end of the mini lathe price ranging, providing a high-value pick for woodworkers with smaller budgets.
  • Quality parts. Despite its inexpensive nature, the machine includes strong and durable tools, making factors like wear and tear or motor failure much less likely. After repeated use I didn’t notice any signs of damage or wearing out.
  • Simple design. Using a basic, intuitive, and easy-to-learn machine design, the lathe is unlikely to turn off beginners or casual users who are just getting started.

On a less pleasant note, during my testing the locking plate used to secure the tool rest suffered from loose screws.

While not a huge deal, this ended up being an irritant, as I had to regularly tighten the screw to keep the tool rest securely attached.

8. VEVOR Benchtop Wood Lathe – Best for Motor Power

VEVOR Benchtop Wood Lathe, 10 in x 18 in, 0.5 HP 370W Power Wood Turning Lathe Machine, 5 Variable Speeds 780/1320/1920/2640/3840 RPM with Rod Injection Wrenches Faceplate Foot Pads, for Woodworking

Power is an overriding consideration when comparing mini wood lathes, so the VEVOR Benchtop Wood Lathe heavily emphasizes this factor:

  • High power. Capable of a maximum motor power of 3,200 RPM, the VEVOR is well-suited for higher intensity wood turning, like in the case of turning furniture parts.
  • Professional accessories. The lathe includes components such as wrenches, foot pads, and a faceplate. These accessories increase functionality and make the machine suitable for professional projects.
  • Wide workbench. Consisting largely of an 18-inch workbench, I found the lathe to be a satisfying fit for sizable, resource-heavy wood turning projects.

A negative I noticed (that sort of put a damper on my experience) was the tool rest, which wasn’t particularly durable and came loose from the machine after only a handful of uses.

I was able to reattach the tool rest, but the experience didn’t bode well for the material integrity of the other parts.

Our Buying Guide for Mini Wood Lathes

For the most part, selecting the best mini wood lathe comes down to two questions: What features are you looking for, and what sort of use case will you have for your lathe?

Let’s explore each question more comprehensively:

Mini Wood Lathe

Top Features for Miniature Wood Lathes

While there’s a huge range of benefits offered by different lathes, in my decades of experience I’ve figured out 3 main features to compare:

  • Power. Most mini lathes fall into a pretty narrow motor range, ranging from 0.5 horsepower to 1.3. For more intensive projects, I’d stress that higher-power machines are crucial.
  • Cost. Some lathes are significantly more affordable than others, but, as you can imagine, there’s usually a feature and quality tradeoff. Your project budget will help you weigh how high you should rank price on your list.
  • Portability. One of the main benefits of all miniature lathes is portability, but some are even more compact and portable than others. If you maintain multiple workshops or frequently move your tools, this feature becomes an essential priority.

Who Makes the Best Small Lathe?

My testing led me to the strong conclusion that RIKON Power Tools makes the overall best small lathe.

The mix of stability, power, and adjustability give the manufacturer’s lathe a compelling case.

On the other hand, if we’re talking about super small (i.e., “micro”) lathes, then PROXXON is at the top of my list. The company’s tool is just about as small as you can get without making major quality sacrifices.

Most Common Uses

Picking a mini wood lathe becomes much easier when you know your specific use case. Let’s briefly talk about the main small lathe uses, and some alternative tool options:

What Can a Mini Lathe Do?

Since the main function of a mini lathe (shaping wood by using a spin mechanism) is quite broad, there are many use cases for one.

You might use a small wood lathe to turn bowls, vases, table legs, holiday ornaments, or bracelets, to give just a small list.

How about an example?

Five years ago, I used a miniature lathe to turn a pair of custom, wooden salt and pepper shakers. The results were impressive, and my family still uses the shakers to this day!

What Can I Use Instead of a Lathe?

Maybe you don’t have a lathe, but your shop is full of other woodworking tools and machines.

Can you use one of those instead?

While you won’t get the same quality of results as a dedicated lathe machine, a drill press can actually make for an effective vertical lathe in a low-budget or DIY project.

Doing this requires some modifications, however.

You’ll need to fix a spindle to the press, which can be done using a threaded rod. I’ve tried this process myself, and while I was pleasantly surprised with the results, I’d still prefer a real lathe machine for the large majority of projects.

For a miniature wood lathe, your best bet is the RIKON Mini Wood Lathe.

The machine has a lot to offer to hobbyists and beginners, with a special emphasis on its motor power, sturdy and secure construction, and five speed settings.

To see if the RIKON is best for your wood shop, check out the tool’s store page and compare it to other options on your list!

Step 4: Precautions:

1. If the user does not have lathe base experience, when used, should follow: low speed, slowly, cautiously and other security operations.

2. The speed can be adjusted in 1000-8000RPM, cut wood should not exceed 4000, grinding can use higher speed.

3. Drill chuck axis, the axis of the wood, the tailstock center axis of the drill should be in a straight line, or need to adjust the nut.

4. If not a cylinder, the speed should be reduced.

5. Tailstock bearing without lock tight.

6. When using a knife, locking the bottom of screw, location should be away from timber 1-1.5cm.

7. If you do not really understand the operation, it is best to consult a professional person.

The 5 Best Mini Wood Lathes for Starting Your Projects

Photo of author

Last Updated on August 28, 2022 by Barry Gray

I’ve always felt that a mini wood lathe is quite a cool tool to use. Granted, I won’t use it for a vast number of projects, but it’s still one of those things that can prove helpful at various times.

In fact, any wood-turning enthusiast would be strongly advised to own a mini wood lathe. After all, it’s the ideal tool for those small finer details, and who wouldn’t want to add those delicate touches just to round off the perfect project?

But as with any tool, there’s a problem. If you venture online and start checking out mini wood lathes, you are inundated with different options.

So, where do you begin?

Well, you begin by checking out my research as I’ve sought to do the hard work on your behalf. I’ve spent time going through the different mini wood lathes on the market, and I’ve come up with a list of five tools that I love.

  • Best Mini Wood Lathe for the Money – Nova 46300 Comet II Variable Speed 12” X 16.5”
  • Best Mini Wood Lathe for Beginners – WEN 3420T 8” X 12”
  • Best Budget Mini Wood Lathe – Excelsior Mini Wood Lathe
  • Best Overall Mini Wood Lathe – PSI Turncrafter Commander KWL-1018VS
  • Best Mini Wood Lathe for Power – Delta Industrial 46-460

At the end, I will give you some valuable tips and a guide on selecting the best mini wood lathe for your needs. I promise the information will prove invaluable to you.

How I Made My Decision

I never just go by price alone when trying to decide on a tool. Sure it plays a part, but we all know that there’s so much more to tools than simply how much money they take out of your pocket.

In the case of a mini wood lathe, I had a few important points I wanted to include when checking out the different options.

I wanted to include lathes that were easy to use and not too tricky to set up. There is something I find very annoying when setting up any tool, and it feels like it’s taking forever.

So, the five lathes below are easy to set up, reliable, perform well, and provide you with everything you could want from a wood lathe.

With that in mind, let’s check out the first of the five mini wood lathes that I feel stand out from the crowd.

Best Mini Wood Lathe for the Money – Nova 46300 Comet II Variable Speed 12” X 16.5”

NOVA 46300 Comet II Variable Speed Mini Lathe 12-Inch x 16 1/2-Inch

  • Power: ¾ HP
  • Speed: Variable from 250 – 4000 RPM
  • Swing Capacity: 16” over the center

If you want a mini wood lathe representing real value for money, I suggest checking out the Nova 46300. This mini wood lathe may appear to be a basic model, but it has some features that you do not always see elsewhere.

First, I prefer this model over others because of the variable speed. You get such a wide range that it’s basically impossible not to get the right speed for your project. Also, changing the speed is easy to do, and you won’t find yourself constantly having to interrupt what you are doing.

But if you worry that higher speeds equal more vibration, then don’t stress. This machine is heavier than most, and that does dampen down the vibrations. As a result, you do not feel as if you will lose control.

If I can also mention the swing capacity. It measures 12” over the bed and 16.5” over the center. That does open up the possibility of you using this mini wood lathe for a broader range of projects.

Finally, this model also comes with a spin reverse mode, which is a bit of a rare thing. It means you will find sanding down against the grain using this feature will lead to a far superior finish.

  • The variable speed is brilliant
  • The spin reverse will prove more valuable than you expect
  • The swing capacity is more than enough for most small projects
  • The reduced vibration makes it easier to keep control
  • Some people may not enjoy changing the speed manually

Best Mini Wood Lathe for Beginners – WEN 3420T 8” X 12”

WEN 3420 8' by 12' Variable Speed Benchtop Wood Lathe

  • Power: 2 Amp motor
  • Speed: Variable speed from 750 – 3200 RPM

This WEN model is another example of why this brand has such a good name in the tool world. Yes, I know it’s not the most powerful model in the world, but for people starting out with this hobby, I think it’s the best mini wood lathe around.

What I love is the simplicity of the machine. First, you get a machine offering variable speeds ranging from 750 RPM up to 3200 RPM. Add in two different tool rests, and you will see a machine that attempts to provide you with as much control as possible when in use.

I also love the fact it’s lightweight at under 20lbs. That makes it very portable, and it also takes up little in the way of space. So, if you are limited with space in your workshop, then don’t worry.

But another reason why I see this option as brilliant for beginners is with the accessories. This machine provides you with those two tool rests, a knockout rod, a headstock spur center, a tailstock cup center, a faceplate, and a flat wrench. Basically, everything you need to get started.

Don’t expect this machine to do anything spectacular. However, it covers the basics and allows you to begin to master your wood-turning skills.

  • It is lightweight and portable
  • The variable speed gives you so much control
  • The accessories are fantastic
  • It is also budget-friendly
  • It is perfect for the beginner
  • It’s not suitable for anybody other than beginners

Best Budget Mini Wood Lathe – Excelsior Mini Wood Lathe

Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe - Cast Iron Mini Wood Lathe Turn Bowls 10” & Spindles 17-3/4' in – Mini Lathe Machine for Wood for Chair Legs, Small Table Legs, & Decorative Woodturning - Turning Machine

  • Power: ½ HP
  • Speed: Variable speed 760 – 3200 RPM

This Excelsior mini wood lathe appeals to me because it does cover the basics, and it does so without costing a fortune. Sure, it may lack certain functions, but if you want a simple mini wood lathe for simple projects, this model could be perfect.

It comes with five different speed settings ranging from as low as 760 RPM to a maximum of 3200 RPM. That should mean you can find the perfect speed for your needs, and it’s certainly easy to move between the speeds.

I also like that the machine is cast iron, so it’s durable and ultra-tough. At the same time, it does not take up too much space, so a beginner with restricted space in a workshop will have no problem setting this up.

Overall, for a budget machine, this is perfect. However, keep your expectations low as to what it can achieve to avoid disappointment.

  • The speed settings are easy to use
  • It doesn’t try to complicate matters by using it
  • The machine is tough and durable
  • You can do all the basics with this low-cost model
  • This is only suitable for people starting out with wood-turning

Best Overall Mini Wood Lathe – PSI Turncrafter Commander KWL-1018VS

PSI Woodworking KWL-1018VS Turncrafter Commander 10' Variable Speed Midi Lathe

  • Speed: 500 – 3600 RPM
  • Swing Capacity: 18 inches from center

Upon checking out this mini wood lathe, I instantly fell in love with it for a good reason.

This model comes with a variable speed option and is exceptionally easy to use. I feel that it means you can carry out those more delicate touches without stressing about losing control.

For woodturners that are all about those intricate details, you will know how invaluable this variable speed will be.

Also, the swing capacity is another impressive aspect. It just means you have the ability to do way more things with this mini wood lathe than you do with other models. In addition, I do like the light they have included in this model. Once again, it lets you see those intricate details without too many problems.

Overall, I enjoy the simplicity of this machine, but it packs a lot of power to make quick work of your project.

  • The variable speed makes such a difference
  • The swing capacity increases its usability
  • Controlling this wood lathe is easy even for beginners
  • The light being included is a helpful addition
  • It is a slightly heavy machine and larger than others, so it requires more space
  • It only comes with a forward motion

Best Mini Wood Lathe for Power – Delta Industrial 46-460

Delta Industrial 46-460 12-1/2-inch Variable-Speed MIDI Lathe, Gray

  • Power: 1 HP
  • Speed: 1725 RPM
  • Swing Capacity: 12 ½ inches

If you are in the market for a mini wood lathe with some power behind it, I suggest the Delta Industrial 46-460.

The thing I love about this wood lathe is the fact it’s suitable for people of all skill levels. Some mini wood lathes almost eliminate the beginner by complicating things, but that’s not the case here.

This lathe is powered by a 1 HP motor, which is a lot for a small machine. It also comes with a speed of 1725 RPM, which means this machine packs a punch. However, it’s not over the top with the power and speed, so you still feel in control.

I also love the cast iron nature of the casing for the lathe. It screams durability, and you just know this mini wood lathe will last for years.

But an essential part of any wood lathe, no matter the size, is the ability to switch between forward and reverse. Thankfully, I found this model to be exceptionally easy to use with this, so you don’t feel as if you need to continually stop and start your project.

Finally, this model does come with its own patented belt tensioning system, and it’s excellent. It just adds to the sense of control you have over the lathe when in use, and you get more precise results as well.

Overall, this is an excellent mini wood lathe that will completely transform your projects.

  • This model is very easy to use
  • You feel in absolute control at all times
  • Switching from forward to reverse is easy
  • Their belt tensioning system improves the longevity of the tool
  • You get a 6” and 10” tool rest as standard
  • It is heavier than other models out there

How to Choose the Right Mini Wood Lathe

mini wood lathe

The five different options I have listed above are all excellent mini wood lathes in their own right. However, you might struggle to work out how to select the right one for you.

Fear not because I have you covered when it comes to making your selection.

You see, when it comes to purchasing a new tool, I always look at different components to help me with my decision. So, I’m going to guide you through the key points that I feel stand out regarding purchasing a mini wood lathe.

By the end, I hope you will feel better positioned to go out and make your own purchase.

Power is crucial with any machine, and what you will find with a mini wood lathe is that it can vary from as little as ¼ HP to around 1 HP. However, most are either ½ HP or ¾ HP.

More power will mean it can tackle tougher wood more easily than expected. However, these mini wood lathes lack the power you see in larger lathes, so remember that these machines are more for small projects than anything else.

I prefer a mini wood lathe with a variable speed setting. Now it doesn’t matter if it’s something you set manually or different speeds set into the machine. The key is the ability to change how fast the wood lathe is turning.

This is important because you do need the option of controlling what you are doing with more delicate, smaller details. A slower speed can lead to better results, so if you see a mini wood lathe that doesn’t have this option, I would certainly urge you to think about a different option.

Swing Capacity

The swing capacity refers to the maximum diameter of the stock that can turn without hitting the bed of the machine. However, you will see machines talking about two distances on most occasions.

This then relates to where the stock effectively pivots when working on it. Remember, these numbers reflect the upper limits of what is possible. If you feel concerned about the size of the stock you will work with, then look at pushing this measurement as high as possible.

However, a mini wood lathe will generally have a swing capacity over the center of around 16”, with some going up to 18”.

I also urge you to pay close attention to the base. You want this to feel as sturdy as possible. Also, consider going for one made of iron if durability is something you want.

But I also suggest thinking about how often you plan on moving your mini wood lathe around. You can find lightweight models at about 20lbs in weight, but others are significantly heavier on the market.

Most of that weight comes in the base, so think about positioning and use before buying.

Additional Features

Look out for a tool rest being included. The tool rest gives you so much control when working your stock that you simply cannot cope without it.

Also, both a headstock and tailstock will be included. Know the measurement between the two to let you know the size of wood you can work with.

Overall, there is not too much to think about when it comes to purchasing a mini wood lathe. The main features are speed, power, and swing capacity.

Overall Conclusion

I hope you find something of interest in this list of mini wood lathes and also that my tips and advice on how to choose one will make life easier.

Any individual who is even remotely interested in carrying out wood-turning projects really must consider investing in a mini wood lathe. The way it will change your entire approach to your projects will blow your mind.

Oh, and that doesn’t then include the difference it will make to the finished article.

The finesse you can achieve thanks to a wood lathe is amazing. If you want to take your wood-turning projects up to the next level, then I would never look past a mini wood lathe. I know I see my own model as being one of the best investments I have ever made, and I’m sure you will feel the same too.

Last Updated on January 7, 2024 by Larry

So you want to know the best mini wood lathe of 2024?

Well, I wanted to find out what mini wood lathe can give a woodturning enthusiast the best output without throwing money down the drain.

I pulled the info you need from my recent survey where I discovered the complete list of best wood lathes for different level turners.

As it turns out, 13.33% of the woodturners are using small wood lathes to turn miniatures. It helped me form this list of the nine best mini wood lathes from 10” to down to 5” swings over the bed.

I started with nineteen similar machines and narrowed it down to these nine. They’re ideal for hobby and DIY projects. This is based on how satisfied the turners are with the performance and the concerns they have.

You may also check my comprehensive buying guide for any wood lathe and then start choosing from here. But, if you are ready to go, let’s start with a quick chart to make it faster for you.

Quick Chart of Top 5 Mini Wood Lathes From The List

I am starting with a quick chart to give you a glimpse of what I will be reviewing today. So, these are some of the best mini wood lathes that deserve to be on the spot.

PSI Woodworking KWL-1018VS Turncrafter Commander 10" Variable Speed Midi Lathe

Last update on 2024-05-23 / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Is Mini Wood Lathe Any Good?

They are until you push them too far. They are cheaper but will last longer if you go with #2 mt and refresh the parts from time to time, and that goes for any lathe you end up buying.

I’ve had my Rockler for about three years now, and I am happy with the overall performance.

Now for the shipping and factory defects (although they are replaceable), sometimes buyers do have hard times.

But they hardly come faulty like loose or broken parts, as they are very lightweight.

It is a common issue regarding heavyweight lathes.

Also, try to keep your turning chisels and gouges as sharp as possible so you get the extra support. Turning smoothly without catches is essential.

Mini Wood Lathes That Are Best in 10” Swing Category:

"Man wearing white and blue t-shirt is checking a white mini wood lathe during work"

To make things clear for you, I classified the lathes by their size and performance. The lathes listed in this category are not just my two cents.

They do last longer and have satisfied so many turners, including local club mentors.

1. PSI Turncrafter Commander KWL-1018VS Review: The Overall Best

"Full red colored PSI-Turncrafter-1018 mini wood lathe in a white background"

  • 10” swing X 18” between centers
  • Motor: ¾ HP, 110V
  • MT2 Headstock and Tailstock Taper
  • Speeds: 2 position belt Variable speed A (500-2000), B (1500-3600) RPM
  • Weight: 84 lbs
  • Only Forward
  • Warranty: 3 years

Worth the price

A bit pricier compared to other mini lathes, but I have to say, I’m convinced by what the turners are saying.

Besides, it got a variable speed motor. Although no matter the price, mini lathes are always within the limit.

Why choose Turncrafter Commander

Personally, I use the Excelsior mini, but let’s not be biased here.

Penn state is pretty solid with their production from the beginning, especially about mini lathes.

The Penn State Industries lathe is among the best deals for the money for a variable speed mini wood lathe that I have seen.

Some folks consider this unit as a Midi lathe for the power and the sturdiness this small motor produces.

I’ve talked to 13 owners of this PSI directly. The average using age, I would say, is one year.

Most of them turn pens, bottle stoppers, and tiny Christmas ornaments. This lathe has held up well, doing absolute justice to them.

One of my friends from Cary, NC, has been with this 10” version for about two years now.

He had turned over a thousand pens for his local business and got no plan to upgrade it with another. All he does is refreshing the parts every once in a while.

Price on the higher end, unlike the rest of the models in 10” category, but make no mistake that it’s #2 MT variable speed with a ¾ HP motor- the reason for putting it over the Excelsior 10” that I am currently using.

I found people complaining mostly about the quality controls for bad shipping, not the quality of the performance. This can happen to any lathe you buy.

The most common problem everyone talks about is the attached lamp becomes sloppy when the speed goes high.

But, a strong gooseneck would support holding it up. I mean, you can manage that.

You can’t go reverse with most of the minis, but with a DC motor like this one, adding a switch is possible.

Just be cautious about the accessories locked over the spindle when sanding in reverse.

Altogether Turncrafter Commander will give you the finish you need for the smaller projects like pens, chess pieces, bottle stoppers kinda stuff.

2. Excelsior Mini Wood Lathe 10×18: The Runner-Up

"Full black colored Excelsior Mini Wood Lathe by Rockler brand in a white background"

  • 10″ swing/ 18″ between centers
  • Horsepower: ½
  • MT2 Spindle Taper
  • Speed Ranges: 760, 1100, 1600, 2200, and 3200
  • Weight: 83 lbs
  • 1” x 8 TPI spindle
  • Only forward

Absolutely. It’s heavy-duty for a little benchtop. #2 morse taper with 1” x8 TPI with the extended bed option, everything under the range for this ½ HP, 83 pounds little beast.

Why choose Excelsior Mini

It’s been almost three years with this lathe, and still impressive.

There was almost the same lookalike unit from HF, but I found Rockler with much more positive reviews of enjoyable user experiences from many miniature woodturners.

I don’t have any biased opinion for Rockler, nor will they pay me, but I had my homework done before settling down.

I have seen celebrity woodturners like Carl Jacobson using this same unit for his workshop.

That ticked one more box for me to rely on it. Mentors don’t lies, remember. Follow them, and you won’t have hard times.

You can use pretty much any MT2 accessories from the aftermarkets as this one #2MT. I have the bed extension for the longer spindle work.

The highest period I ran the motor was like 2 hours or less to test it, and it didn’t stall out.

But the motor went way too hot to touch, so I stopped it there.

I’ve heard that the motor bogs down after a short run. Maybe I got lucky that mine is a healthy one, but these are all underpowered motors, so I respect their limitations.

The only drawback for me that it’s not variable speed, but if you want, you can change the factory motor with variable speed.

I changed mine from Pen State. But honestly changing the belt is not that of a big deal to many turners. Learning something traditional way is always classic.

As mini wood lathes are not ideal for bowls, so I use my Jet midi to handle the bowls instead.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t. It means they don’t have the ideal low starting speed for turning bowls. In that case, I would suggest you go for the Jet 1015 I listed below.

As for the bed extension, it took some time for me to level that up properly. I would be delighted if it were four bolt holes instead of two.

Everything rest is very impressive as I said. Go for it, and you won’t regret it.

3. Rikon 70-105 Mini Wood Lathe Review

"benchtop woodturning machine in a white background"

  • 10″ swing/ 18″ between centers
  • Motor: ½ HP, 3.7A, 120V
  • MT2 Taper for headstock and Tailstock
  • 1″ x 8 TPI
  • Speed Ranges: 500, 1175, 1850, 2225, 3200
  • Weight: 75lbs
  • Warranty: 5 years

Talk about the price

Price is very good for the quality. Besides, five years of warranty for a machine at this low cost is pretty surprising for me. Can’t expect more.

Why consider Rikon 70-105

Rikon is a trustworthy brand among turners. To be honest, it was quite tough not to give this unit a place over the Excelsior and PSI.

I heard some saying that this is just a glorified Harbor Freight tool, and I don’t agree with that either.

HF has a grumble about their motor that it gets hot very soon, but it looks like Rikon 70-105 got a better motor on it. One thing you will notice if you shop around, this one goes on sale a lot.

To me, it’s kinda will give you quite the same feel as the 70-100, which has 2 inches of advantage in the bed swing.

But, if you only wish to turn miniatures, especially pens, I suppose 2 inches is not that bigger, and they both got almost the same motor power (70-100 with a little more).

So you will want to go with 70-105 unless you want to focus on bowls. It will do the job perfectly for you.

I know people using it for more than five years now and still want to stick to it.

Again, it’s not a variable motor. If you are getting tired of changing belts and don’t want to do it anymore, I suggest you either go with the Turncrafter or install the PSI variable speed motor. Easy solution.

There isn’t much to talk about the cons as they act individually. Things happen when you are actually on the field and working on the machine.

Some minor manufacturing defects could be there with any brand you go with, and that’s normal.

Say, for example, the bolts for the rubber feet are not appropriately tapped, and you are having trouble mounting it during assembly.

If you see some troubleshooting that you don’t understand, try searching in manualslib.com or call your manufacturer.

4. Jet JWL 1015VS Mini Wood Lathe Review

"Mat white colored jet jwl 1015vs mini wood lathe in a white background"

  • 10” swing and 15-1/2” between centers
  • Motor: ½ HP, 115 V, single-phase, 4A
  • MT2 Quil and Spindle Taper
  • 1″ x 8TPI
  • Speed Ranges: 200-1050, 300-1750, 600-3600
  • Weight: 77 lbs

The price is pretty high for a mini to consider as they have upgraded the motor with variable speed.

But I think I would go for a midi like the Delta 46-460 (amazon link) instead, at this cost point.

Why consider jet jwl 1015

Talk about the qualities; they absolutely nailed it. Jet is the go-to choice for many beginners, as well as the pro-level turners.

I don’t know if you noticed that a wide range of clubs is taking classes with Jets around the United States. They have built trust.

Jet 1015 is very much able to give your wood chunks the treatment it needs. Suitable speed for bowls under 10”, dead-on headstock and tailstock alignment, allows MT2 accessories with five years of warranty.

You can lock the workpiece into 24 positions. The motor doesn’t have a heating-up problem like the others. At least I haven’t heard anyone saying that to date.

It’s a pretty solid Mini wood lathe to go for.

They tend to keep the price high for their tools. Now for a Jet lover, you will still pick Jet as your mini, and I am not saying you shouldn’t.

Even I have the 1221VS Midi to handle my small bowls also (I said bowls, not balls).

If you want to turn only small bowls, then the side cost for other accessories would be much lower.

But if Pen is something you want to focus on, the total cost might get pretty high as you might need more accessories.

I suggest you go with the Excelsior mini if you don’t wanna hurt your bank.

Mini Wood Lathes That Are Best in 8” Swing Category

Let’s talk about the lathes that are in the 8” bed swing category. They are smaller in size and power than their immediate seniors.

But you can fit them easily in your RV as they are half the weight of the 10”.

1. Wen LA3421 Variable Speed: Good Option for Low Budget

"Black body with orange tool rest, Wen-3421 mini wood lathe in a white background"

  • 8” swing and 13” between centers
  • Motor: 3.2 Amp (1/3 HP), 120V
  • MT1 Spindle and Tailstock Taper
  • Spindle Speed: Variable speed from 750 – 3200 RPM
  • Weight: 45lbs
  • Warranty: 2 Years

Worth spending

If you are new in the turning world and want something that won’t cost you much, allowing you to sharpen your ability, then go for it.

It’s a variable speed lathe but with an underpowered motor. So very limited but enough for the beginner to take off.

Why choose Wen LA3421

The LA3421 is a great update to the previous version, the 3421. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not a top-tier lathe. But for the hobbyist, it’s a great entry-level lathe.

Though the improvements are slight over the previous version, they’re enough to put the LA3421 to the top of my list over the Shop Fox.

Getting variable speed at this range is worth mentioning. In the previous model, 3420T had an unsustainability problem for the motor.

The size of the faceplate and motor with this one is the main difference.

If you want to choose within Wen mini, then go with this one, not the 3420T. It will have more motor power.

Motor bogs down pretty often. Try not to push too far beyond its limit. Don’t go for bowls. It’s suitable for lighter spindle works.

They say you can do table legs, but that’s not the picture here. Stay with the lighter smaller works.

I saw people turning mallets with this lathe, even a 5” bowl.

The thing is you have to be very gentle with this machine as they are kinda fragile in nature.

2. Shop Fox W1704 Mini Wood Lathe

"White colored shop fox W1704 8 inch bed swing wood lathe in a white background"

  • Motor: 1/3 HP, 4 AMP, 110V
  • MT1 headstock and Tailstock Taper
  • 3/4-by-16-inch TPI (Buy a 3/4” 16 TPI to 1” 8 TPI adapter.)
  • Spindle Speeds: Infinite Variable from 700-3200RPM
  • Weight: 41 lbs
  • Warranty: 2 years

Worth the spending

Very well made for any novice as well as regular turners who likes the small spindle works. Almost all the 8” swing lathes are below 1/2 HP motor.

Now you know your projects as well as the limitations. But for the category, it’s among the best selling lathes of all time , a solid unit among all the other machines.

Why choose Shop Fox W1704

My experience has overall been positive. I have turned plenty of acrylic pens and some tiny bangles for my friend’s small shop here in Vermilion Street.

He had three units in total, including HF and Wen. I found Shop Fox much better in action (some may have a different opinion, and they are welcome).

It was way less vibrating, even in the used condition. I’ve heard complaints that the tool rest does not stay in position, but I found mine very well-aligned.

The variable speed control was easy to use and convenient, which is something we all want to have nowadays, to get rid of the belt changing pain.

In a nutshell, an excellent choice for beginners, but just to remind you that this is not something a professional would go after.

But it can handle things under its limit.

The common dissatisfaction that people have is the way they designed the tailstock that makes it difficult to get a real negative rake angle.

Sometimes the shipping causes severe damage.

Almost 20% of the users were not happy with this unit. But the catch is most are turners that are in this profession for years now. I am trying to say that this is not something that can excite serious woodturners.

If you have had the taste of the real lathe, this is not for you because it might not meet your expectations. The motor power won’t satisfy you.

These are absolutely for the people who just started their journey. My recommendation would be to go with the 10”.

Cheap Portable Micro Wood Lathes For Pen Turners

Okay, time to talk about the portable mini wood lathes that are designed to work precisely on pens.

If making pens is something that you are getting interested in, then these two are definitely credible.

These are collet lathes with no morse taper on either end. They are lightweight and consume so little space that you can easily travel anywhere with them.

They will make your road trip fun.

1. PSI woodworking penpal review: The Overall Best

"Dark red colored PSI woodworking penpal mini wood lathe in a white background"

  • 5-1/2” swing and accepts 7” mandrel
  • Motor: 1/5 HP, 110V
  • MT1 Tailstock
  • Speed: Variable speed from 0-4300 RPM
  • Weight: 15lbs

Worth as the alternative to the standard mini wood lathe?

I am not saying that you can’t make pens with the 10” minis. It’s like they are not made explicitly for turning only pens. They have features that allow you to do more.

Besides, not all the pen turners only make pens. So, think before you choose one.

If I were you, I would have asked myself three questions before making any decision.

  • Am I planning to make money with turning only Pens? – Yes
  • Am I ready to spend a ton of money right off the bat? – No
  • After making some money, am I prepared to upgrade my lathe now? – Yes

There you go. You get the idea, right?

As they are significantly low powered, you might not be able to free your arms like a standard lathe. But this will do the job perfectly for you as it is doing for many pen turners.

If you have any problem like the shortage of motor in the very earlier days, call PSI, and they will return as they have always been great at serving their customers.

2. Proxxon 37020 DB 250 micro wood lathe Review: The Runner-Up

" Light Green colored Proxxon-37020-DB-250-micro-wood-lathe in a white background"

  • 1 3/4’ from floor to center of spindle and 10” between centers
  • Motor: 110-120V AC, 1/8 HP (100W)
  • Headstock spindle bore of 13/32” (10mm)
  • Tailstock travel 1 3/16” (20mm)
  • Speed: Variable speed between 1000 and 5000 RPM
  • Weight: about 6lbs
  • Warranty: 2 years from the manufacturer

The criteria for consideration are the same as above. Pen state has a better return policy and trustworthiness than Proxxon.

But Proxxon DB 250 is a well worthy opponent.

This small lathe has a variable speed motor, unlike the PSI. It’s a German-based company, and most of the tools are produced there.

So definitely not Chinese, I guess.

They got a good number of positive reviews from the pen turners. I haven’t heard anyone complaining about the motor running out too fast, as some of the PSI users claimed.

I suggest you use super-sharp tools while turning acrylics as the motors are not that robust.

It does not have morse tapers. You can’t put a mandrel on it.

Some people addressed that the collet it comes with are not strong enough to hold a relatively bigger workpiece, so grips are not great.

Motor powers are only adequate for turning pens or tiny dollhouses out of softwood only. The tool rest is also small.

So go for it if you want nothing more than pens out of it. It will do the job.

Questions People Also Ask

"Man wearing a red shirt and a watch, turning wood on a mini wood lathe with a chisel in hand"

A mini wood lathe can cost you from $150 to up to $500 based on the features and the horsepower. Take the wen 3421vs as an example. You are getting the variable speed but not the torque like the PSI Turncrafter can produce. If you want something for your causal DIY hobby, where you might not need to change the speed frequently, a belt-driven mini-lathe could be a good option. You can get yourself a brand new one for under $250.

I don’t think anyone would consider this. I mean, you cannot go big with a mini lathe like the larger one. If you are entering into a woodturning world for the first time, spending that much right away without knowing what you might like about woodturning wouldn’t be a great idea in some cases. So the question should be, what aspect should you consider first? And, in my opinion, you should consider the price first. A full-size wood lathe can cost you a couple of thousand dollars, whereas a mini can get you started within a minimum price point. But make no mistake, these mini lathes I mentioned above can do some serious jobs within their ranged diameter. You don’t need to compare them with a full-size lathe.

Mini lathes are popular among pen makers mostly. Being capable of turning lighter projects successfully is a great choice for any entry-level and budget turner. You can make pretty much everything but under the scope. Many professionals keep them as their second option for sanding or more focused finishing. Things you can make: Pens, wine/bottle stoppers, small bowls, chess pieces, tiny furniture legs, Christmas ornaments, beautiful dragon eggs, small pepper mill, flower vases, pots, jars, duck, or goose calls, and the list goes on and on. So, Sky is the limit. You can do pretty much everything that a real lathe does, but there are apparent limitations within the range for a mini. However, midi lathes are more potent in making large-sized bowls, as they allow you more space on the swing with much more torque. But, I know people running online businesses with just one strong mini-lathe like PSI or Jet.

As the mentors say, you need to decide what project you are willing to work on. Choose your machine according to your capability (pocket and workspace both). If you have strong plans to turn big, you have been into the woodturning classes, then starting with a full-size lathe would be a good idea. But if the budget gets in the way, then you have options for Midi and Minis. Regardless of what you buy, the checklist should be-a good brand with enough HP motor, MT2 standard taper, and variable speed. Brands ensure quality tech support, a much-needed thing to consider. Watch this tutorial from PSI before buying a mini wood lathe.

My Last Words

Woodturning is an addictive hobby. The more you turn, the more you become addicted to it.

You’ll discover yourself scoring woods everywhere. It gets into the head right after you start to realize it is fun.

As lathe will be your best friend down the road, so always choose your lathe with care.

Take your time; don’t rush. Buy something that will allow you to grow, I always say this to others.

The mini lathes will give you the time and opportunity to test yourself.

Don’t spend everything just on the lathe. You will need other tools too, and don’t forget to get a face shield for safety.

Turn Big, Turn Safe. Welcome to the turning world!

Wise Buys: Mini-Lathes

If you'd like to try your hand at woodturning, a mini-lathe proves the perfect solution.

Launched in 1984,  WOOD ® magazine is the world's most trusted woodworking resource — a distinction we've earned by guaranteeing our readers' success in their woodworking shops. It is the  mission of our staff to inspire and inform woodworkers at every stage of their journey by providing reliable and accurate project plans, woodworking techniques, and product reviews.

Why buy? If you'd like to try your hand at woodturning, a mini-lathe proves the perfect solution. Sure, they're great for turning pens. But mini-lathes also excel at other tasks. You can turn bowls, platters, hollow vessels, bottle stoppers, drawer pulls, chair spindles, and table legs—all for about half the price or less of the cheapest mid-size lathe. We define a mini-lathe as any benchtop lathe with 20" or less capacity between centers and 12" or less of swing (the largest diameter workpiece you can turn on the lathe). These lathes typically have 1 ⁄ 2 -hp motors, and most feature optional bed extensions for turning longer spindles. WOOD magazine turning expert Brian Simmons tested all the models.

Jet JML1014-VSI

Speeds: Variable, 500-3,900 rpm. Capacities: 10" swing, 15" between centers. Weight: 70 pounds. Optional accessories: 23" bed extension; lathe stand; lathe stand extension.

Editor test-drive: Compared with the Rikon, you give up 2" of swing and 3" between centers, but the JML1014-VSI's , shown above , variable-speed control provides the ability to change speeds ever so slightly—especially in the lower range for roughing out a blank. The 1 ⁄ 2 -hp motor provided respectable torque when I turned a 9" bowl and 15" spindle, and because there's little vibration, it, too, passed my standing nickel test. Jet's spindle features chamfered threads, and topped the test with virtually no run-out. It also had the best alignment of centers; a spur center with long, thin points that needed only a light tap to seat in a turning blank; and 1- 7 ⁄ 8 " of quill travel for boring.

However, I did find a few areas for improvement. For example, when boring holes with a drill chuck in the tailstock, the lathe's combined quill lock and keyway sometimes allowed the quill to spin within the tailstock. With three-tiered pulleys, I didn't have to change belts as often; but when I did, it proved difficult because the speed-control box limits access to the lower pulley.

Rikon 70-100

Speeds: 430; 810; 1,230; 1,810; 2,670; 3,900 rpm. Capacities: 12" swing, 18" between centers. Weight: 86 pounds. Optional accessories: 24" bed extension, lathe stand, lathe stand extension.

Editor test-drive: Ssshhhhh! Don't tell the folks at Rikon, but they're selling a Cadillac for the price of a Chevy! Rikon's model 70-100 has it all: torque, capacity, low price, and lots of great features. One of only three 12" mini-lathes I found, the 70-100 handles heavy cuts without vibrating—I was able to stand a nickel on the lathe bed while turning. With two speeds under 1,000 rpm, it provides lots of torque in the range needed for roughing out stock. In fact, its 1 ⁄ 2 -hp motor, ribbed belt, and step pulleys delivered so much torque at the slowest speed, I could not stall it or make the belt slip when I plowed my gouge into a 9" cherry bowl blank.

Chucks and faceplates mount easily onto the spindle, thanks to its chamfered threads. The tailstock features a quill lock separate from the keyway, which prevents the quill from spinning in the tailstock. A 2- 1 ⁄ 2 " quill stroke delivers plenty of travel for boring holes. And it has onboard tool storage, a 12-point indexing headstock, and plenty of room for super-simple belt changing.

Jet JWL1220

Speeds: 500; 840; 1,240; 1,880; 2,630; 3,975 rpm. Capacities: 12" swing, 20" between centers. Weight: 101 pounds. Optional accessories: 28" bed extension, lathe stand, lathe stand extension.

Editor test-drive: Although Jet's newest mini-lathe costs more than most models, it offers several unique features that make it worth the money. With a robust cast-iron body and powerful 3 ⁄ 4 -hp motor, the JWL1220 never balked as I took heavier cuts than anyone really should on a mini-lathe. Although it did vibrate slightly during tough cuts, it purred smoothly for most of my testing workout. It has the same speed selections as Jet's fixed-speed version of the JML1014 (not shown), but the bigger housing makes belt changes much easier.

Because the JWL1220 has the longest mini-lathe bed, Jet includes 6" and 10" toolrests as standard equipment. The larger toolrest allowed me to turn full-length spindles without having to move the toolrest as often as with the 6" version, common to all the other mini-lathes. Other great features on this machine: chamfered spindle threads, minimal spindle run-out, 1- 7 ⁄ 8 " quill stroke, and built-in tool storage. My only wishes: I'd love to see a longer neck on the lamp.
