A street cat named Bob – Analysis

A street cat named Bob is a memoir published in 2013 written by the English author James Brown. This novel and other memoirs written by the author are among the bestsellers in the world. The book is based on real-life events that show a part of the author’s life and reflect upon issues that are, to some extent, in everybody’s life. It is an uplifting and inspiring story of a real-life event in the author’s life.

The analysis of A street cat named Bob discusses the theme of the novel. The discussion aims to understand the theme of the book trying to find if there are multiple themes and, accordingly, how those themes interact and are revealed throughout the book. To answer the thesis statement, the discussion will be developed upon main events and the main characters of the book. That is, trying to relate main events and characters to a specific theme/themes.

The story is about the author, James Brown, who is a street musician in the streets of London. He was recovering from drug addiction and living in sheltered accommodation. One day, while he was going to his flat, James found a homeless and injured ginger cat in the hallway that is leading to his flat. James tried to find the owner of the cat but couldn’t. Therefore, he took the cat with him into his flat. He gave the cat food and took care of its injury. James took good care of the cat and took him to a veterinarian to recover. He decided to name the cat Bob. Their friendship got stronger with time and they got to know each other better. James realized that Bob is a smart cat and the bond between them got stronger with time. While Bob was recovering, James took Bob with him to see the world again. One day, after Bob’s recovery, James decided that he will prepare Bob to go to his normal life in the streets. That is, because James believed that it was something Bob wanted. Bob showed another reaction and didn’t want to go back to the streets. That made James think about another plan. James started to take Bob out more often so Bob could get used again to life in the streets. James never succeeded in doing that.

From that point, Bob used to go out with James and followed him on all his tours through London. James felt the difference that Bob made when it followed him in his tours. They became well-known characters in the place where James used to play his music. Bob made it easier for James to communicate with people. At the same time, Bob’s presence near James changed James’ way and attitude toward people. James understood what it could mean to take care of somebody else and how it is to have responsibility. James got into problems with law enforcement because of his job as a street musician. Therefore, he applied for a job to sell Big Issue magazines. Bob and James become well-known for selling Big Issue magazines. Bob become so popular that he went viral on Youtube and tourists recognized Bob when they saw it. They called the cat Bob-Big Issue. At that time, Bob was becoming well-known on the internet and some kind of celebrity. James and Bob got interviews, films and offers to write a book. Bob saved James’ life and changed it. From a homeless, drug addict, and hopeless man to a responsible man.

The novel is structured in a chronological timeline. The author describes the events from the beginning to the end when they became celebrities. The chronological timeline contributed to the reading experience as the book is a memoir. That is, the novel is about a specific period in the author’s life.

In that way, the reader logically could follow the real-life events of the author.SettingThe novel takes place in London, England for a period of two years, 2007 – 2009. Referring to the settings in the novel, gives the reader a perspective and an image of the events of the book.

The book is centered mainly on two characters that are Bob, the cat, and James, the author. The book does not describe how James looks like. The reader gets to know how Bob is as a cat and how it looks like. For example, when James lost Bob, he started to ask people if they saw a red cat running.

Another example is when James for the first time finds Bob and describes him as a “ginger cat”.

The most obvious theme of the book is the friendship between Bob and James. This can be seen throughout the whole book. For example, in the very beginning of the book and before their bond gets stronger, James felt the friendship

“There was no doubt that he was forming an affection for me. As, indeed, I was for him.” (p. 23).

Even when James tried to put Bob again in the streets as he believed Bob wanted this, Bob never accepted and always went back to James. That reveals loyalty as a theme in the book as well, even if it is not as obvious as friendship.

They, Bob and James, always sought each other when they were not together. For example, when James lost Bob at the end of the novel, he went crazy looking for Bob. He never let Bob down and never abandoned him. However, the most obvious theme of the book is friendship, and the secondary theme of the book is loyalty.

A street cat named Bob is an interesting memoir based on the real-life events of the author. It is considered a memoir and not an autobiography because it is centered around a specific event in the author’s life and not about his whole life. The book is about friendship and loyalty between James and Bob. How they could influence each other’s lives for the better.

A very interesting book and interesting events through the author’s life during this period when he was homeless, drug-addict, and hopeless.

A street cat named bob: how one man and his cat found hope on the streets.

“ If  a man could be crossed with a cat, it would improve man, but deteriorate the cat.”-

In the novel- A Cat named Bob by James Bowen, the author takes us on a journey of a  friendship, between a man and a ginger coloured stray cat.  We, the readers, are seeing the story unfold in real time, like a diary of sorts.  The story spans for about 2 years. In that time, James had gone from a recovering drug addict, trying to get his life in order, to finally finding some stability in his life. James managed to pull himself together, and Bob, the ginger coloured cat, was a friend that marked the beginning of his journey to self harmony. We get to follow the two in their daily life from being a busker (street musician) to a ”Big Issue” seller , a magazine that was for the general public.  Big Issues main philosophy:

” The Big Issue exists to offer homeless and vulnerable housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income by selling a magazine to the general public. We believe in offering “a hand up, not a hand out” and in enabling individuals to take control of their lives .’”- Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 96 – Line 23

My thesis statement for the text is- 

How animals can change our perspective on life itself, and make us better human beings in the process.  

So, how did James start his downward spiral, to later on end up on the streets of London?

James has had a turbulent life, growing up as a nomad. He made some mistakes and misdemeanours that led him down a dark path of life. A terrifying and apprehensive time. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 23

When those missteps were made by James, he lost his value in life, in his eyes and others. He became invisible.  Out on the streets he started a bad heroin habit, also a life of petty crime. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 23 – Line 9

James later on, after a portion of time on the streets, he then got himself into a clinic that helped him with the drugs/household situation. James moved into a so-called, sheltered accommodation, and there, it didn’t take long for his new friend to introduce himself. James found a cat roaming around in his apartment hallway, with wounds and scars.  He developed a soft spot for his new friend, and took him to the veterinarian, to nurture him back to his glory days, but this cost money.  He didn’t really know how to take care of himself, with the low income of being a busker, out on the streets of London, and a recovering drug addict, at that. So how could he take care of someone else? Still he didn’t hesitate for a second, to take care of his new feline friend. After Bob was up and running again, James then tried to set the cat free several times, although Bob always found his way back home.  One day, James thought he had shooed Bob away. He was sitting on the bus, and as it soon started to move, Bob jumped up and sat on James´ lap.

It was here that James knew that this cat wasn’t going anywhere.- Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob  – It speaks of this at the end of Chapter 4.

James had been busking around a place called Covent Garden for about a year and a half, solo. Before Bob tagged along. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 39 – Line 10.

With Bob by his side, people were beginning to treat him more like a human being ,instead of some really messed up bukser-bum.  After a couple of outings with Bob, James was starting to enjoy his work.  It had been a long time since James had said that to himself.- Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 51 – Line 28. 

Now he was seen by the society, and was grateful for having Bob in his life.  Which, by this time, had become his best friend. Having Bob in James’ life has really made a huge difference, it even made James take a step back and take a good look at himself, a nd he didn’t like what he was seeing. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 67 – Line 30.

It’s here James took a good look in the mirror ,and started to make some steps in the right direction, to try and get his life in order.  Something had to be done. Selling the newspaper, ”Big Issue ” really helped to survive. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – page 101 – Line 15.

James had seen the horrible side of life.  You could say that without the newspaper , there would be no structure in James’ life.  He could barely take care of himself. If it all would go to shambles, then James couldn’t provide either  food or shelter, for dear Bob. It is here that the responsibility lies completely on James.  It was his time to step up. 

Furthermore, what impact did Bob have on the rest of the city’s residents, both pedestrians and motorists?

James started to take Bob along when he went out busking, and Bob surely was a crowd pleaser. Therefore James sold a lot more magazines. Win Win! When Bob was tagging along ,he could see a real difference in how people reacted to him. People were beginning to be a lot nicer. People growed a deep affection and  were concerned for Bob. Even the most argumentative people genuinely changed their opinion about James and his way of life, when they met Bob.  He easily bonded with people, and put a smile on their faces, on their way to work. He felt that he was living in Bob`s shadow, and he was sincerely okay with that.  He couldn’t imagine his luck, that Bob had jumped into his life.

Already in the early phase of their outings together, people of the town came and gave Bob gifts of all sorts. Several home knitted scarves were also popular.- Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – page 77 – Line 28.

”People were soon queing to take photographs of him in it.  I should have charged; we  would have made a fortune ” – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – page 78 – Line 21.

The book shows the reader that one animal can make us accomplish great things in life, and how  one person, or in this case a cat, can make us try to be better human beings, if we just have faith in ourselves.  At the end of James’ story, he  states that Bob had saved his life . Deep down he knew that this was a moment to cherish. To be grateful!

” We did it mate,’ I said. ‘We did it.’ T he sense of achievement was incredible. Over the next few days, the transformation in my health and life in general was huge. It was as if someone had drawn back the curtains ,and shed some sunlight into my life. Of course, in a way, someone had. – Author: James Bowen: A Cat named Bob – Page 138 – Line  27-31

James has come to a point in his life, where something ends and something else begins. Something always comes to an end, but it’s what you do on the journey that matters, a nd there we have it, folks. The end of the book- A Cat named Bob.  I thought it was a light read. A nice pocketbook of sorts.  One that fits well on a long train ride home.  When we are discussing this sort of book, these true stories, you really get an amazing feeling after you’re done reading them. They just let you have a quiet ”wow” moment for yourself, sitting in a train cart, somewhere going nowhere. It’s cool to see how one man’s story can shape our outlook on our own life, in a way. 

For example, when you are walking down a busy street, you have no idea of some of the amazing stories people with pets could share with you, if you only gave them a chance. So for a simpleton like me, it is wonderful to experience a remarkable story like the one in- A Cat named Bob. To counclud my text, I just want to say that it’s truly amazing what animals can make us humans accomplish in life, just with a little push.  How without even speaking a word, looking in those big feline eyes of theirs, they know exactly what we are feeling.  Our animal companions are not only that, our companions, they’re also an anchor for us to hang on to, and find stability in our daily lives-soulmates. Thank god for our little rascals, that we have the pleasure of spending a portion of our life with, and for James, in- A Cat named Bob.  His life has just begun!

A story like this has helped me cherish my moments in life, regarding a cat and its buddy. The book also taught me to be a better human being ,to the people, and all the animals you meet along the way. A story like the one in- A Cat named Bob.  It’s strange how just one meeting of two separate kinds of people, or in this case a cat, can give a new outlook on life looking forward.  We just don’t know who will be our saving grace, but one thing is for sure.  We can accomplish great things in life, with a little support from a great friend.

Second Chances

There are few second chances in life which makes each decision important. The author of this book felt that people had “second chances” on a daily basis, and the only question was whether one would choose to take them. James Bowen had struggled through most of his life, from his inability to form friendships as a child to his drug addiction as an adult. He was able to look back on his life and those choices and to pinpoint some specific second chances that he failed to take, and after meeting the street cat he named Bob, James was ready to take some of the second chances that came his way.

James felt that the day he brought Bob into his life was a second chance for them both, and recognized that it might also have been their last chances for meaningful change. James's mother moved often...

Author Bio • Birth— March 15, 1979 • Where—Surrey, England, UK • Education—N/A • Currently—lives in London, England James Bowen is an author and busker currently based in London. James was interviewed by journalist Garry Jenkins, resulting in him writing the 2012 autobiography, A Street Cat Named Bob . The title is a play on the title of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire . Early life James Bowen was born in Surrey, England, in 1979. Following his parents’ divorce, he moved to Australia with his mother and stepfather. Home life was tense and, because the family moved frequently, James was unsettled at school. He was frequently bullied, and began sniffing glue while still in education, becoming a self-confessed “tearaway kid” who would later be diagnosed with ADHD, schizophrenia and manic depression. In 1997, he returned to the U.K. and lived with his half-sister, but this arrangement did not last; in time, he became homeless and began sleeping on the streets. From this point, James spent almost 10 years either sleeping rough or staying briefly in charity-run shelters; it was during this time that he began to use heroin in an attempt to escape the realities of homelessness. Meeting Bob In Spring 2007, James was enrolled on a methadone programme, busking in Covent Garden, and living in sheltered accommodation in Tottenham, London. One evening he returned home to find a ginger cat in the hallway of his building; assuming it belonged to another resident, he simply returned to his flat. When the cat was still there the following day, and the day after that, James became concerned and discovered the cat was wearing no collar or ID tag, and had an infected wound on his leg. James checked with other residents to see if the stray belonged to any of them, and when none of them claimed ownership of the animal James decided to help the cat himself. He took the cat to a nearby veterinary surgery run by an animal charity, which provided antibiotics to treat the infected wound. In order to make sure he received the full two-week course of medication, James decided to take him in for a time while he continued to look for the stray’s owner. When he couldn’t find any information, he released the cat back on to the street, hoping he’d find his own way home. Instead, he began to follow James around, even following him onto the bus when he left to go busking. Concerned that the cat had nowhere else to go, James took him in on a permanent basis, naming him Bob after a character from the television drama Twin Peaks . Since Bob seemed keen to accompany James to work, he constructed a harness from shoelaces and began to bring him along to his regular spots in Covent Garden and Piccadilly, travelling in the window seat of the number 73 bus. The public reaction was positive and the pair became popular, their visibility increasing still further when James began selling the Big Issue.

Soon the public began uploading videos of James and Bob to YouTube, and tourists from across the world would visit Covent Garden to see them. During this time, James decided to withdraw the methadone treatment; he credits his success to Bob, saying “I believe it came down to this little man. He came and asked me for help, and he needed me more than I needed to abuse my own body. He is what I wake up for every day now... he’s definitely given me the right direction to live my life.” Books Currently, three books have been published about James and Bob. • A Street Cat Named Bob was first published in 2012. It began with the Islington Tribune , which printed his story in September, 2010. Mary Pachnos, the literary agent responsible for the UK rights to John Grogan’s Marley and Me , read the story and subsequently secured the pair a book deal with U.K. publishers Hodder & Stoughton. Co-written by Garry Jenkins, the book sold over 1,000,000 copies, been translated into 29 languages, and spent over 76 weeks at the top of the Sunday Times ’ bestseller list in both its hardback and paperback format. As their book climbed bestseller lists in many countries and their fame skyrocketed, Bob began to receive hand-knitted scarves from all over the world. If you have read other books by James Bowen, then this book, The Little Book of Bob – Life Lessons from a Streetwise Cat, is worth reading too.  When I first read A Street Cat Named Bob, it made me cry. In a good way and this new book, from Bob’s view on life, is just as good. 

Awww this sounds like such a lovely book! I’ve kept meaning to read A Street Cat Named Bob but never got round to it so perhaps I need to buy this one at the same time!

I’ve got the first book and was captivated by their affection for each other. I would love to read the next book.

Although it’s not a book I would pick up it does seem like a good read. I’ll have to add it to my list!
