How to Prepare a Strong Application: Tips from Current Bachelor Students

We know that applications to university can be a stressful undertaking for candidates and that you have a lot of questions. The Bachelor Admissions Team is here to help you out throughout the whole application process, but we know that sometimes it’s best to let students speak for themselves.

Students from École Polytechnique’s Bachelor Program would like to share some tips to help you during the application process. They went through the same process as you, and they share their insight.

About the Personal Statement

“Just be as sincere as possible while putting yourself in the best light possible. Personal projects and accomplishments can be very rewarding so don't forget to include them; everything isn't only about grades, remember to show that you are interested in the Program. ”

“I would recommend using precise examples and not staying vague. Small anecdotes can have a powerful meaning. I would also recommend being original and unafraid of answering the question in your own way. What is important is to show your personality. ”

“Brainstorming and writing the personal statement can seem very intimidating as the first "challenge" when applying for this Program. To overcome this anxiety, I find that a good place to start is the webpage dedicated to the Bachelor Program. Reading each page carefully, identifying what the Program expects of its candidates helps to lessen unease and serves as a guideline when writing the statement. However, just as its name says: remember to keep it personal. Don't just write what you think the Admissions Committee wishes to find. Keep your statement original and share your own experiences, your activities and your engagements in various domains (even non-science related ones) all whilst making sure that you stay in line with what is expected from an ideal candidate. Also make sure that your dedication to the Program is apparent. ”

“The intent behind the personal statement is clearly to understand the applicant better. I took the questions seriously, and tried to analyze myself, as if I was analyzing a poem or something for an essay. The questions were really quite introspectively relevant. I then presented what I found sort of like a "thesis", organizing my answer in pseudo "arguments". "

“The personal reasons why science interests you , as well as your future plans, sources of interest outside your high school, even your idiosyncratic ways of studying if you think they shed light on what kind of a student you are and will be. Furthermore, if you are linked in any way with associative life, if you have any language diplomas or if you have participated in any academic or sports competitions, make sure you tell the Admissions Committee about them. ”

About Referees and The Recommendation Letter

“I picked teachers that I had developed a mutually respectful and warm relationship with , who I thought would not only talk about academic skills but the type of person I am, since I was applying to a Program where lots of students with rigorous high school tracks would apply.”

“My referees were my high school's principal and my physics teacher . I chose an academic referee and one that was more aware of my extra-curricular activities. My physics teacher had trained me for the concours général and therefore knew me very well. As a member of several students association and administrative structures, I had many opportunities to work alongside the leading team of my high school. That way they knew about me and the projects I was involved in. I think it is important to choose people who know you well, because the letters will only be more genuine, and it will show during the examination of your file. Also, it is important that the two letters underline different aspects of your personality. For me, one was about my academics, and the other about my involvement and my personality.”

Bachelor in hall

“I chose a mathematics teacher to ensure I had one recommendation from a scientific point of view . For the second one, I chose my English History teacher because I felt she really knew me well, and she was able to assess my abilities to share in an international environment. I did hesitate to ask an old sports coach whom would have been able to assess my commitment and my interest in group life, but teachers are really aware of what is asked in a recommendation letter. Probably if I had done music at a high level, I would have asked my music teacher.”

“Make sure the teacher you choose will have the time to write the best letter possible , because it's an important part of the application.”

“When choosing your referees, I reckon it is important to choose individuals that are in some way related to sciences as this will be the main focus of the Bachelor Program. But more importantly, choose referees who know you well from an educational standpoint and are aware of your scientific potential. Don't hesitate to let your referees know about extracurricular activities you might lead as they probably do not know everything about your lives. This will ensure that your recommendation letters present the full spectrum of your capacities and merit.”

“I had changed school between my last two years, meaning my "current" teachers, from my new school, didn't know me that well . So I chose one teacher from my "final" (current, at the time) and one from my penultimate year. I reasoned that would give the Admissions Committee information about me more depth, and perhaps more balance (by mixing institutions). I chose my math teacher from final year, figuring that it was important to provide up to date information on my level in that subject above all.”

Any Other Advise?

“Chill. Don't stress too much, stress a little though. More seriously, don't try worrying about existential questions such as: “Am I good enough for this?” “Do I really have what it takes?” “Should I stalk the other candidates/current alumni on Facebook?” “I stalked them and they are so freaking good what the hell am I doing here?” Just try to present yourself in the best possible light, you are the person who knows your strengths and weakness best, so show the first and hide or fix the second. Good luck and don't forget to have fun! See you soon! ”

“First: PREPARE YOUR ORAL. Of course, you can go and improvise. But you will be a thousand times better with just a small preparation. Be able to introduce yourself in 3-4 minutes, because it is often asked. You can even learn an answer to that by heart, and slip a few hints in it so that the examiner asks you about things you fully master. However, if you see that they don’t go where you're trying to lead them, don't insist. Also, think of what you want to do afterwards. It is important to tell what your ideas are for the future, even if you only have assumptions. Also, have an idea of what this bachelor is about so that you can adapt your arguments to best showcase why you are made for this. ”

Keep Calm and Dream Big

“I would advise every future candidate to take the proper time that he/she needs to prepare his/her application file. They have to be aware of the big step that they are about to go through. ”

“Remember there is nothing you can't achieve , believe in your application and in your talents, you might find yourself studying in France's scientific leading institution in a few months. To sum up: keep calm and dream big! ”

Applying to EAE (O level)

The Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) helps you secure a place in your preferred course – even before you sit for your O-Level exams. Admission is based on your interest and aptitude for your chosen polytechnic course – rather than academic results. It will also help if you have outstanding achievements in sports, leadership, entrepreneurship, community service, and the arts.

Can I apply?

You must have registered to sit for the O-Levels in the year of your EAE application. You must also be a:

  • Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident (PR), or

Successful applicants will get a conditional offer. To secure your admission, your O-Level score will still need to meet the minimum entry and medical requirements of the course.

How do I apply?

Decide and apply.

  • Choose up to three diploma courses
  • Submit the mandatory 600-character write-up for each of the three courses
  • Include a 1,000-character write-up on other achievements and talents (optional)

Psst… Count the characters, not the words! Characters include letters, numbers, punctuation and even spaces.

Interview and assessments

  • portfolio of works (e.g. sketches, coding works, editorials, robot structures, certificates, etc) - required for design-related courses
  • leadership positions or roles in schools and/or CCAs
  • achievements, awards, and recommendations
  • participation in competitions, workshops, seminars
  • depth of passion and interest, and aptitude

In short, tell us why you would be a good candidate for that course.

Application outcome

Successful applicants will get a  conditional  offer. To secure your admission, your O-Level score will still need to meet the minimum entry requirements and and you will need to meet the medical requirements of the course.

If your NYP offer is confirmed , you will receive NYP enrolment notifications via SMS and email by February. You will need to log in to the NYP e-enrolment system to accept the course offer and complete the enrolment process. Check out the  academic calendar on course commencement date .

  • If you decide to change your mind, be sure to withdraw within the withdrawal period (12 Sep - 13 Oct) . Otherwise, you will not be eligible to participate in the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) and other polytechnic admissions exercises.

  • Applicants who have accepted the conditional offer and met admissions criteria for the offered course will also not be able to switch courses within or across polytechnics.

Application letters are typically written to accompany school or job applications. The purpose of the letter is to introduce yourself to the decision committee, and to outline your qualifications in a specific way. It can be the only time other than an interview that you have a chance to really stand out in an application, so it's important to get it right. You can learn what to include in your letter, how to style it, and how to format it to give yourself the best chance.

Application Letter Templates

Writing a Job Application

Step 1 Say why you're writing and what you're applying for in the first sentences.

  • A good example would be: "I'm writing to apply for the Chimney Sweep position advertised in Rolling Stone. I think my experience in the heating industry makes me uniquely qualified for this position. Please find my application materials and a brief description of my qualifications below."
  • Don't write your name until the signature. It'll be in the header and in the sign-off, so there's no reason to put it in the body of the letter itself.

Step 2 Explain why you are the best candidate.

  • Be specific. Who are you? Where do you come from? What's your story? These details are important. HR screeners read hundreds of these.
  • Describe your ambitions. Where do you want to go? How will this opportunity help you get there?
  • What skills and experiences make you the right fit? Be as specific as possible and avoid vague language. It's better to describe a time you solved a specific problem at your last job than to just write, "I'm a good problem solver at work."

Step 3 Keep the tone professional.

  • Tailor it to the business. If you're applying to work at a record store, you need to talk about music. If you're applying to work at a tech company that writes, "Tell us something totally rad about yourself!" it's probably ok to be a little more informal.

Step 4 Explain how both parties will benefit from your selection.

  • Don't over-promise. Telling someone that you can guarantee that you'll be able to turn around their sales figures in six months or less is a good way to get fired in six months.

Step 5 Do some research.

  • Any kind of job requires this type of research. If you apply to a restaurant, you need to be familiar with the menu and the kind of customers the restaurant attracts. Consider eating there a few times before you apply.
  • Don't show you're familiar by criticizing a business and telling them what you can do better. Not the time to offer a harsh criticism of a business plan that you don't really know anything about.

Writing a School Application

Step 1 Address the prompt.

  • Common prompts include things like, "Outline your qualifications for this position" or "In writing, explain how this position would affect your career goals." Sometimes, the prompt will be as short as, "Tell us something interesting about yourself."
  • If there is no prompt, but you still feel the need to introduce your application with a letter, it's usually best to keep it as short as possible. Explain what you're applying for, why you're applying, and thank the contact for their consideration. That's it.

Step 2 Tell your story.

  • Often, college prompts will ask you to describe a time you struggled, or a time you overcame some obstacle. Write about something unique, a time that you actually failed and dealt with the consequences.
  • The board will get thousands–literally, thousands–of letters about someone's first mission trip, and letters about the time someone's sports team was beaten, then overcame the odds, and won again. Avoid these topics.

Step 3 Write about your future.

  • Be specific. If you're writing to a college board, don't say, "I want to go to this college because I need a degree." That's obvious. What do you want to do with it? Why? If you're applying to a business, don't say, "I just need a job." That's obvious. Why this specific job?

Step 4 Don't include stuff that's also on your resume.

  • If you're applying to schools, what do you like about the school? What faculty are you interested in? Why this school, instead of another?

Formatting Application Letters

Step 1 Keep it short.

  • If you don't get a word-count guideline, just focus on making one or two good points about yourself, and keeping it at that. No need to drone on four several pages.

Step 2 Only address the letter if you have someone to address it to.

  • Instead of a salutation, write, "Letter of Application" at the top left corner of the page, or put it in the header on the left side at the top.
  • If you do have a contact, address it to them, making sure the name is spelled correctly. Then space down and start the body of the letter. [10] X Research source

Step 3 Use a standard font.

  • Sometimes, it's appropriate to type your name, then print out the letter and sign it in pen. That can be a nice touch.

Step 5 Put your contact information in the header.

  • Mailing address
  • Telephone and/or fax number

About This Article

Alexander Ruiz, M.Ed.

To format an application letter, start by including your name and contact details in the document header. When choosing a greeting, only use one if you know the person's name your writing to. Otherwise, give the document a title, like "Letter of application" at the top of the page. For the body of the letter, aim to write no more than 1 page of single-spaced paragraphs using a standard font. Finally, conclude your letter with a formal greeting like "Sincerely yours." Admission Decision Appeals

We review every application for maximum consideration. For an appeal to have merit, it must contain new, serious and compelling information that clearly shows you to be academically stronger than had been earlier evidenced. Neither grades received in the current academic year nor mistakes made on the application are a basis for an appeal or the reversal of a decision.

Submitting an Undergraduate Appeal

  • Complete the Admissions Appeal process requesting that we reconsider your application. The entry must come from you (the applicant) and be submitted no later than 15 days after receipt of your original admission decision. You will be required to confirm your request to appeal the decision via email . Appeals submitted via hard-copy letter, email or fax are not acceptable and will not be considered.
  • Your submission must clearly outline your reasons for appealing the initial decision, and the information you present should be new and compelling. Do not simply repeat information that had already been presented in your application.
  • You must upload an unofficial transcript as part of your appeal. Transcripts must include all course work and grades completed to date, plus an official listing of the course work in which you are currently enrolled. Transfer applicants must submit transcripts from all colleges attended, but do not need to submit high school transcripts. First-year applicants must submit transcripts from all high schools attended and, where applicable, from all colleges attended.
  • Letters of recommendation and personal statements or essays are not considered in the admission selection process at Cal Poly and cannot be submitted as part of your appeal. You may not appeal the decision to be placed on Wait List. Only students who have been denied admission may submit an appeal.
  • Appeals will be reviewed on an individual basis. You can expect to receive a final decision sent to the email delivery address we have for you on file within three weeks of receipt of the appeal.

Submitting a Graduate Appeal

  • Complete the Admissions Appeal process requesting that we reconsider your application. The entry must come from you (the applicant) and be submitted no later than 15 days after receipt of your original admission decision. You will be required to confirm your request to appeal the decision via email . Appeals submitted via hard-copy letter, email or fax are not acceptable and will not be considered.
  • An unofficial transcript from the institution that granted your bachelor's degree must be uploaded as part of your appeal. Transcripts must include all course work and grades completed to date, plus an official listing of the course work in which you are currently enrolled.
  • Appeals will be reviewed on an individual basis. You can expect to learn the final decision by way of a formal letter sent to your mailing address within three weeks of receipt of the appeal.

Letters of Recommendation

Strong letters of recommendation are critical and essential for strong fellowship, scholarship, and graduate school applications. Letters of recommendation stem from a relationship established with a research mentor or a professor during a semester or over a longer period of time, and it is important to start building these relationships early in your college career. It can often times seem difficult to "get to know" faculty or other mentors due to busy schedules and competing priorities, however, it can be done if students make the effort. Developing a relationship that can lead to a useful letter of recommendation is up to the student.

When asking for a letter of recommendation, be sure you are asking someone who can speak to your specific skills and abilities. It is also crucial that the letter writer is familiar with the scholarship/fellowship opportunity that you are applying for and that you have provided letter writers with any information suggested by the Scholarship Foundation. Be sure that their insight is pertinent to the opportunity for which you are applying (for example, if applying for the Goldwater Scholarship, you would want to seek out letter writers who have seen or worked with you on research projects).

You should ask the writer for a letter of recommendation three to four weeks before the deadline, if possible. Two weeks before the deadline should be considered the minimum advance notice.  Here is some advice on whom to ask and how to:

Before you approach anyone for a letter of reference, identify the number of people that you will need. Use the application material to help you choose the best letter writers. What aspects of your background do you want each letter of recommendation to comment on? Seek a mix of letter writers and identify their roles for them. Collectively, your letters should present a balanced picture of you. It is helpful to the letter writer if you tell them you hope they will comment on you from a certain angle in their letter.

Do not hesitate to stay in touch with letter writers occasionally in the weeks approaching the deadline for the letter. Ask the writer if they need any more documents or have questions about a two weeks from the deadline, and gently remind the letter writer about a week from the deadline of the details for letter submission and deadline. This can be exceptionally helpful if they are writing multiple letters for you that have different deadlines and submission requirements.

Thank your letter writers and keep them informed on your progress. Regardless of whether you receive the fellowship or not, initiating and maintaining follow-up contact with your references is both courteous and professionally smart.

Economy | From start to finish, here’s how to get noticed in your job search

While including a cover letter and writing a thank-you note aren’t as much in vogue these days, both are essential opportunities that will set you apart.

A person working on their computer.

While some may regard both as being antiquated, I disagree.

Let’s start with the cover letter, which isn’t meant to be a condensed version of your resume. Instead, it’s an opportunity to introduce yourself in a more personal way.

Some recruiters, including me, start by reading the cover letter.  If that catches my interest, I’ll go ahead and review the resume. Other decision-makers may do the reverse.

Whatever the case, I regard your cover letter as your invitation to get me to pay attention to who you are and what you’ve done so far. And I can tell whether you’ve customized your letter for each company and position, so it doesn’t sound like a form letter.

Typically, the length of a cover letter isn’t more than three mid-sized paragraphs.

The opening paragraph is where you mention the specific job you’re applying for, literally down to position #1234 or systems manager of global marketing.

You’d be surprised how many resumes are submitted in which the recruiter has no idea what position the candidate is applying for.

While it may be easier to submit a resume to a large company with no tie-in to a specific job opening, doing so is pretty much a waste of time.

But by including a job number or precise title, it’s more likely your resume will be forwarded to the most appropriate recruiter.

Also in the first paragraph, share how you heard about the position and mention the name of someone in the company who recommended that you apply.

Why you think you’re qualified

The second paragraph deals with why, briefly, you think you’re qualified for the job.

Something like, “I’m eager to put my 10 years of experience as a global marketing manager at ABC and XYZ to work for Qualcomm.”

Be specific and mention the company or companies by name.

The third and final paragraph talks about your availability to connect via call phone by “Monday through Wednesday of next week,” adding “before I travel” — even if you’re not planning to go anywhere.

I realize that the recruiter, if interested, will call, email or text at their own convenience, not yours, but that “travel” caveat conveys a certain sense of urgency.

Then thank the reader for their time, renew your strong interest in the position, or any other job that might be appropriate for your experience and skills.

Always convey an upbeat, positive attitude about that someone – you – they shouldn’t miss the opportunity to meet.

Now let’s move to the thank-you letter.

It’s easy to email a quick “Thank you for meeting with me” note, and that’s still okay to do.

But your email will likely get lost amid the hundreds that most people receive every day.

A longer-lasting effect

Instead, I suggest writing a handwritten thank-you note sent via old-fashioned mail. Although it won’t get there for a few days, such a note will have a longer-lasting effect.

After all, how many handwritten notes do any of us receive anymore? Not many, so when we do get one, it tends to make the letter-writer stand out.

Whether emailed or handwritten, be sure not to blow it with your thank-you note.

I recall a less-than-compelling note I got from a college student after I spoke to his class and then met with him – an example of networking at its best.

“Thank you, Mr. Blair, for meeting with me today,” his note said. “I enjoyed our conversation and learned a lot. Thank you again. Joe”

Thanks for the note, Joe, but you blew that one.

You should’ve referenced a few of the topics we discussed, maybe offered some input and, for good measure, tossed in a nugget or two that you got out of our meeting.

You did thank me, but I got the strong impression that you didn’t listen to anything I said.

While including a cover letter and writing a thank-you note aren’t as much in vogue these days, both are essential opportunities that will set you apart.

And your chances of success will be far better than Joe’s.
