Opinion essay.

Se trata de un artículo de opinión con respecto a un tema determinado redactado en idioma inglés. En este tipo de redacción o ensayo lo más importante es la conclusión , indistintamente del argumento que uses para poder realizarlo.

Es un ejercicio de redacción realizado en inglés. Una de las bases fundamentales de un opinion essay son en primer lugar el vocabulario variado y abundante con sentido , y en segundo lugar, el contenido o frases bien estructuradas con suficientes conectores que te permitan estructurar de la mejor forma (con léxico y vocablo educado) determinada opinión.

La importancia de un opinion essay radica en evitar casi por completo el vocabulario informal, las contracciones y los términos coloquiales .

¿Cómo se debe estructurar un opinion essay?

La estructura de este tipo de ensayos tal como se mencionó anteriormente debe estar lo suficientemente definido . En este sentido, las partes que lo conforman, deben permitirle al lector poder interpretarlo y entenderlo solo con “echar un ojo por encima”.

Lo primero que se debe tomar en cuenta es la introducción . En ella, el punto de vista que vas a plantear debe quedar claro y sin duda alguna. Algunas frases o conectores que puedes usar para ello son los siguientes:

• believe that / Some / many people feel – cree que / Algunas / muchas personas sienten
• As I see it – a mi modo de ver
• It is generally agreed that – en general se cree que
• According to – según
• It seems to me that – me parece que

En Segundo lugar pero igual de importante son los argumentos empleados para este tipo de redacción. Estos deben ser organizados en dos grupos o tres, dependiendo de la cantidad del contenido.

La idea es exponer de forma detallada en los argumentos, el punto de vista que se va a plasmar bien sea a favor o en contra. Algunos ejemplos que se pueden emplear son los siguientes:

• I belive that – creo que
• For example – por ejemplo
• In my opinion – en mi opinion
• On the one hand – por una parte
• Because of this – debido a esto

En tercer lugar, la conclusión . Debe ser manejada con mucho detalle y palabras adecuadas ya que es aquí donde se expresa el final del artículo redactado. Algunas palabras, conectores o frases que puedes emplear al momento de realizar la conclusión son las siguientes:

• To sum up – para resumir
• In conclusion – en conclusión
• Whereas – mientras que
• However – sin embargo

Antes de conocer la estructura para escribir un opinion essay en ingl茅s, veamos algunas recomendaciones que te ayudar谩n:

• Usa siempre un lenguaje formal , en este tipo de art铆culo no es v谩lido el lenguaje informal. No uses contracciones, phrasal verbs , ni idioms .
• Utiliza conectores que te permitan unir un p谩rrafo con otro con sentido. Evita repetirlos constantemente.
• Para redactar un opinion essay efectivamente, tu ingl茅s debe ser bueno , sino est谩s en un nivel intermedio o avanzado es mejor que te prepares antes de hacerlo.
• Cada p谩rrafo deber铆a tener una idea principal a desarrollar . Evita p谩rrafos y oraciones largas que cansan al lector.
• Antes de comenzar tu art铆culo define cu谩l ser谩 tu opini贸n , esto te ayudar谩 a estructurarlo adecuadamente. Esta posici贸n debes dejarla clara desde el inicio de tu escrito. 
•  Para hacer este tipo de art铆culos debes investigar ya que necesitas datos, hechos, fuentes que sustenten tu posici贸n.
• Escribe en un solo tiempo verbal , si es en presente simple , mantenlo en todo el art铆culo. 
• El t铆tulo es un punto clave en tu escrito, debes pensarlo bien. Evita titular con una pregunta. En el t铆tulo debe quedar claro tu opini贸n sobre el tema a tratar. 
• Mant茅n la objetividad en tu escrito, a pesar de que es un art铆culo de opini贸n no debes dejarte llevar solo por las emociones, trata de ser objetivo.
• Antes de escribir ten claro el objetivo de tu ensayo y el p煤blico al que va dirigido. Haz un bosquejo de las ideas principales, selecciona las m谩s importantes y descarta aquellas que no son v谩lidas.

Estructura para escribir un opinion essay

Antes de comenzar a escribir un ensayo opinion essay debes conocer la estructura correcta, que se divide b谩sicamente en tres puntos: introducci贸n, cuerpo y conclusi贸n. Veamos en detalle uno por uno para que comiences a escribir tu propio ensayo de opini贸n:

Introducci贸n

En este primer punto de nuestro escrito debemos ubicar al lector sobre qu茅 leer谩 . Como su nombre lo dice, la introducci贸n hace referencia a introducir nuestra visi贸n, es decir, dar una idea de qu茅 tratar谩 nuestro ensayo.

En este pre谩mbulo debes exponer el tema a tratar y enganchar al lector. Para esto puedes ayudarte con cifras, datos o hechos reales que sean atractivos y determinantes. Si tu introducci贸n no es lo suficientemente atractiva tendr谩s pocas posibilidades de que el lector contin煤e. As铆 que debes esmerarte por comenzar fuerte, claro y contundente. Para comenzar a introducir estos datos o hechos te dejamos algunas frases en ingl茅s que te funcionar谩n en tu opinion essay :

Cuerpo principal

Tras realizar la introducci贸n debemos comenzar a desarrollar nuestro art铆culo de opini贸n. Aqu铆 debemos exponer todos los argumentos que sustentan nuestra opini贸n. La recomendaci贸n es trabajar por cada p谩rrafo un argumento. Recuerda que los argumentos pueden ser en contra o favor de una posici贸n, todo depender谩 de la postura que te plantees asumir. 

Lo ideal es que comiences tu primer p谩rrafo del cuerpo del ensayo con el argumento m谩s fuerte, el que sustenta tu opini贸n. En el segundo p谩rrafo podr谩s exponer el segundo argumento m谩s importantes y as铆 vas sucesivamente explicando por p谩rrafo cada argumento en orden de prioridad. Normalmente los ensayos se componen de aproximadamente cinco p谩rrafos.

Para que tus p谩rrafos sean f谩ciles de leer debes estructurarlos bien. Evita las oraciones largas y p谩rrafos complejos. Ve al grano sin dejar de usar un lenguaje formal y siempre con un argumento que justifique lo que est谩s escribiendo. Para expresar opini贸n tendr谩s que usar algunas frases que te ayudar谩n a presentar tu punto de vista sobre el tema que est谩s escribiendo. 隆Toma nota!

Todas estas frases te ayudar谩n al momento que expreses tu opini贸n en ingl茅s en tu art铆culo de opinion essay . Debes escoger la m谩s apropiada seg煤n sea el caso, como ves hay unas m谩s formales y otras m谩s coloquiales y directas. Para que no siempre uses las mismas, puedes ir variando en cada p谩rrafo a medida que vayas explicando los argumentos.

Veamos algunos ejemplos para expresar opini贸n:

In my opinion, educator salaries need to be improved. / En mi opini贸n, es necesario mejorar los sueldos de los educadores. From my point of view, you have to regulate internet content. / Desde mi punta vista hay que regular los contenidos de internet. I disagree with current public policies. / No estoy de acuerdo con las pol铆ticas p煤blicas vigentes.

Para poder estructurar tus p谩rrafos con sentido utiliza como te mencionamos arriba los famosos conectores. Aqu铆 te dejamos algunos 煤tiles, pero te invitamos a leer nuestro art铆culo de conectores en ingl茅s (linking words) donde encontrar谩s much铆simos m谩s.

Hay much铆simos conectores que puedes usar, no uses siempre los mismos. De igual forma en la lista anterior te dejamos algunos que sirven para estructurar el orden de tus ideas. Aqu铆 tienes algunos ejemplos:

If you can consume energy, you can do work and, therefore , create more. / Si eres capaz de consumir energ铆a, puedes trabajar y, por lo tanto, crear m谩s. It’s very romantic, even if the language is a bit stilted. / Es muy rom谩ntico, incluso si el lenguaje es un poco forzado. But above all , I think it lost touch with its subjects. / Pero sobre todo, creo que perdi贸 el contacto con sus temas.

En la 煤ltima parte de tu opinion essay deber谩s realizar una conclusi贸n que concentre las ideas principales de tu escrito y termine de reforzar tu opini贸n al respecto. Muchas veces los estudiantes subestiman la conclusi贸n y no se esfuerzan en hacer un buen cierre, lo cual es un grave error. Tu conclusi贸n debe ser igual de importante que el resto del escrito, as铆 que no lo tomes a la ligera solo por poner fin. 

Aqu铆 te dejamos unas frases 煤tiles que te servir谩n al momento de indicar la conclusi贸n de tu opinion essay :

Veamos a continuaci贸n un ejemplo de un opinion essay partiendo de una pregunta ya formulada, es decir no partimos de un tema libre. Este es m谩s un estilo de prueba oficial, por ejemplo IELTS, donde te dan un tema en concreto y deber谩s presentar tu posici贸n al respecto:

It is argued that earning lots of money has more significance to people than being content in their work. This essay totally disagrees with that statement. I believe that people are increasingly concerned about the risk of stress-related ill-health frequently experienced by people in highly paid positions and they care more about feeling fulfilled at work. Employees who earn a large income are generally under significant mental and emotional pressure to perform well and achieve targets. This causes many individuals to suffer high levels of stress which can result in mental health problems. This happened to my uncle. He used to boast about his huge salary but the boss kept increasing his sales targets and in the end, the stress became too great and he had a nervous breakdown. Now he regrets being driven by the money. Having a job that they enjoy doing, and in which they feel valued, is a major concern for most of the modern workforce. A significant number of people are giving up well-paid positions to do jobs which pay less but that they find more enjoyable and less stressful. I am an example of this myself. A year ago I left the teaching profession because the workload had become too great, and I am now a gardener. I feel really fulfilled in this work and I am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn far less money. In conclusion, for a high percentage of the population, earning a substantial wage is less important than job satisfaction because of the negative effects of work-related stress and the desire to feel happy and fulfilled at work. (272 words)

Opinion Essay: cómo escribir un artículo de opinión

¡Hola a todos y bienvenidos un jueves más!  Hoy vamos a ver cómo escribir un artículo de opinión, es decir, un OPINION ESSAY. 

Saber redactar un opinion essay conlleva conocer la estructura del texto así como algunos conectores y formas para introducir nuestra opinión. Pero lo cierto es que este post no solo nos ayudará a aprender a redactarlo, sino que además aprenderemos expresiones para que en nuestro día a día sepamos expresar nuestra opinión de manera oral. 

Espero que os acordéis de los linkers and connectors del post anterior de escritura, ¡porque hoy os van a resultar útiles! Aunque, no os preocupéis, repasaremos los más útiles para este essay concreto.

¿Qué es un opinion essay?

Para aprender a redactarlo, es esencial saber qué es. Un opinion essay es una redacción en la que damos nuestra opinión sobre algún tema determinado. 

Es importante mostrar una opinión clara desde el principio, es decir, desde la introducción de la redacción. A lo largo del texto, acompañaremos nuestra opinión de razones y ejemplos que argumenten nuestro punto de vista. Además, podemos ofrecer también una visión opuesta a la nuestra y explicar por qué nuestra opinión  es mejor . 

Estructura del opinion essay

El opinion essay, al igual que cualquier otro tipo de essay (o redacción), debe estar dividido en párrafos. Así, la información estará visualmente dividida y el lector podrá fácilmente diferenciar cada parte correspondiente a cada párrafo. 

Podemos resumir la información que debemos dar en el essay así: di lo que quieres decir, arguméntalo y resúmelo. Suena lioso, pero vamos a verlo de forma detallada en cada parte de la redacción. 

Introduction – Introducción

Un opinion essay debe comenzar siempre con una introducción. En ella, ofrecemos nuestro claro punto de vista sobre el tema que vayamos a tratar. Debemos introducir de forma clara y concisa qué pensamos, es decir, cuál es nuestra opinión, pero aún no hace falta que argumentemos los motivos. 

Hay varias formas de introducir una opinión:

Consejo – ¿Qué son los intensificadores?

Las expresiones como ‘I think’ o ‘I believe’ son muy fáciles y sencillas, pero se corresponden con un nivel básico. Sin embargo, es posible utilizarlas si queremos redactar un texto más formal o de más nivel, y para ello tendremos que añadirles intensificadores . Los intensificadores son palabras que dan fuerza a nuestra opinión. Aquí os dejo algunos:

• Completely – I completely agree – Estoy completamente de acuerdo…
• Amazingly – I amazingly believe – Sorprendentemente creo… 
• Totally – I totally think – Totalmente pienso…
• Utterly – I utterly believe – Totalmente creo…
• Quite – I quite agree – Coincido en que… / Estoy bastante de acuerdo en que… 

Body – Cuerpo 

En el cuerpo presentamos ideas que argumenten nuestra opinión. Es importante que cada idea se corresponda con un párrafo, es decir, no debemos escribir dos ideas distintas en el mismo párrafo. Esto facilitará mucho la lectura y la compresión al lector y mostrará que somos personas ordenadas y con una opinión clara. El cuerpo suele variar entre uno y tres párrafos. Si queremos ofrecer algún argumento más, podemos añadir algún párrafo más, pero no recomiendo que sean más de 5. Realmente, lo ideal son 3. 

Hay varios conectores que nos pueden ayudar a introducir nuestros argumentos.

Para el primer párrafo argumentativo del cuerpo:

Para el segundo y/o tercer párrafo argumentativo del cuerpo:

Para el último párrafo argumentativo del cuerpo:

En el caso de que queramos añadir una opinión opuesta a la nuestra: 

Conclusion – Conclusión

La conclusión será el último párrafo que escribiremos. En ella, debemos resumir de nuevo nuestra opinión y enumerar los argumentos de forma realmente breve. No tenemos que explicar nada, sino simplemente mencionarlos.

Algunos conectores útiles para introducir la conclusión:

• No utilicéis nunca abreviaturas. Un opinion essay debe ser una redacción formal, así que las abreviaturas, como bien sabéis, no son bienvenidas.
• Argumentad siempre vuestra opinión, es decir, si afirmáis algo, argumentad por qué. No basta con decir ‘I do not agree’, debéis decir por qué no estáis de acuerdo. 
• Intentad utilizar conectores distintos. No digáis en cada párrafo ‘I think’, la variedad en el lenguaje es riqueza. 
• No escribáis una conclusión demasiado larga. Debe ser clara y breve. 

Los opinion essays son un tema muy común en exámenes de inglés. Pero, además, saber expresar en el día a día lo que pensamos es esencial.

Cómo escribir un essay Cambridge B2: estructura y guía paso a paso

Tanto si te presentas al Cambridge B2: First como al Cambridge C1: Advanced, sabes que en la primera parte del writing caerá un essay. ¿Sufres el síndrome de la hoja en blanco? ¿No sabes cómo escribir tu essay B2 o sientes que no tienes tiempo suficiente para terminarlo? Entonces necesitas leer esta entrada, en la que escribiremos juntos un ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2 paso a paso. Pero antes, respondo a algunas preguntas que puedes estar haciéndote sobre cómo escribir un essay B2.

Diferencia entre essay y article B2

Una de las preguntas que mis alumnos suelen hacer más a menudo es la diferencia entre essay y article . Esta es sobre todo es de tono y estilo: un article B2 expresa un punto de vista personal sobre un tema de una manera más cercana y desenfadadas, en la que el autor o autora suele hablar en primera persona y atraer a su lector con preguntas retóricas, afirmaciones sorprendentes y otros recursos que lo «enganchen».

En un ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2, por el contrario, emplearemos un tono más distante y académico (evitaremos hablar en primera o segunda persona). Además, trataremos de incorporar puntos de vista diferentes al nuestro.

¿Cuánto tiempo y espacio tengo para escribir mi ejemplo de essay B2?

Para saber cómo escribir nuestro ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2 debemos tener en cuenta su extensión   (140-190 palabras)  y el tiempo del que vamos a disponer para escribirlo (80 minutos para las dos tareas del  writing,  con lo cual  tienes 40 minutos para tu  essay) .

Ahora bien,  ¿qué pasa si excedo las 190 palabras? 1. responde a la pregunta del essay.

Lo primero que haremos para escribir este ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2 es leer el enunciado, en el que encontrarás una pregunta. Trabajaremos con este enunciado (pero puedes encontrar más aquí ):

Después, lo que tenemos que hacer para comenzar el essay es responder la pregunta.

Como suele ocurrir con los temas de Cambridge, es muy probable que no hayas dedicado mucho tiempo a este y no tengas una opinión formada. ¿Qué hacer entonces? Sencillo: vamos a escribir lo que nos salga de la punta… del boli. Brainstorming de toda la vida.

Esto es lo que me ha salido de la punta del boli:

Después , agregaremos las ideas que ya nos dan en el enunciado, y que debemos obligatoriamente incluir:

• friendlier at local businesses
• broader at department stores

Después de esta fase de brainstorming, queda claro que me inclino más por las tiendas de barrio que por los grandes almacenes. Esta será la respuesta a la pregunta del essay.

Para argumentarla, elegiremos una de las ideas que han salido en el brainstorming y nuestro desarrollo de las ideas que nos han dado en el enunciado.

2. Hacer un guion: la coherencia en mi ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2

En el segundo paso para escribir nuestro ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2, organizaremos las ideas en un outline a manera de guion. Además, desarrollaremos estas ideas explicándolas y proporcionando ejemplos.

Cuando tengas que escribir tu essay, no te devanes mucho los sesos. Tira de tu experiencia personal (o la de tu cuñado) como comprador/a en tiendas locales y grandes almacenes.

En el caso de nuestro ejemplo, empezaremos copiando la pregunta del essay. Después, continuaremos con una disadvantage del comercio local y luego escribiremos las ventajas. Este es el orden lógico si la idea que queremos transmitir es que preferimos comprar en local businesses (que es la respuesta que hemos dado a la pregunta del essay en el paso anterior).

Como ves, a mí me gusta representar la jerarquía de las ideas que quiero plasmar siguiendo una estructura diagonal. Así me resulta más fácil verlas.

3. Redactar tu essay: cohesión en mi ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2

El siguiente paso en la redacción de este ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2 es convertir las ideas del paso anterior en párrafos.

Recuerda que cada párrafo debe tratar una sola idea y que las diferentes oraciones deben seguir una secuencia lógica y estar bien cohesionados. Para ello he de emplear los conectores adecuados.

Ahora bien, a estos párrafos les hace falta algo, ¿no? Vamos, que parece que no tienen nada que ver el uno con el otro.

Aquí viene el segundo nivel de cohesión: hay que unir los párrafos entre sí para que formen parte de un todo coherente y el lector no se pierda. Para ello usamos el signposting , que no es otra cosa que emplear conectores (signposts, transition signals, llámalos como quieras) al principio de cada párrafo:

Antes de continuar, quiero que te fijes en lo siguiente:

• La idea principal está siempre al comienzo del párrafo.
• No escribo oraciones demasiado largas

En el último párrafo he metido alguna otra cosa que no iba en el guion original. No pasa nada: hazlo si ves que el párrafo se te ha quedado muy pobre y puedes añadir algo que explique mejor la idea principal. Pero tampoco te pases.

4. Escribir la conclusión de tu essay

Ahora que hemos puesto punto final a la última disadvantage , continuamos con el penúltimo paso para escribir este ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2: escribir la conclusión. Para ello, haremos un resumen de los argumentos expuestos y emplearemos conectores, tanto para la coherencia interna del párrafo como para la coherencia del essay.

Y para que nos quede una conclusión de 10, dejaremos al lector con algo que pensar:

5. Escribir la introducción

Por último, para terminar este ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2 escribo la introducción. La de jo para el final porque, personalmente, me parece lo más difícil. Si no es tu caso, puedes escribirla antes del paso anterior o después de haber respondido a la pregunta del essay.

La introducción sirve para atraer a tu lector. Este, sea en la vida real o sea tu examinador de Cambridge, es una persona ocupada y tienes que ponérselo fácil para que lea.

Para escribir nuestra introducción, seguiremos la forma de un embudo que comienza con afirmaciones de carácter genérico sobre el tema del essay . Haremos un poco de brainstorming:

• Department stores are present in every large town and most middle-sized ones
• Popular with elderly people and millenials

Después, terminaremos este embudo con la thesis statement , la oración central de tu essay que dará pie a la argumentación que le sigue. Por esto mismo, la thesis stamentent debe contener las palabras clave que aparecen en las oraciones principales (iniciales) de cada párrafo.

De acuerdo: quizá no sea un recurso muy original. Pero funciona.

6. Revisar y pulir

Después de haber seguido estos pasos para para escribir este ejemplo de essay Cambridge B2, solo queda revisar lo que hemos escrito. Nuestro essay ha quedado así:

Ahora hay que comprobar y corregir los fallos de organización (cohesión y coherencia) gramaticales, léxicos y ortográficos. De ello te hablo en este pdf descargable .

How to Write an Opinion Essay A2/B1

An opinion essay is a formal piece of writing in which you share your thoughts on a specific topic. You should express your opinion clearly and give reasons and examples to support your point of view.

Remember that when we write in formal style , we must not use contractions or informal words or expressions.

Parts of an opinion essay

An opinion essay must have 3 parts:

1. Introduction

In this paragraph you have to introduce the topic. You introduce the topic by restating the question or the title of the essay in your own words. Here you have to say if you agree or not with the question or the title of the essay. You can agree, disagree or partially agree.

In this section you have to support your opinion with reasons and examples. You must include at least three reasons. Break it into several paragraphs. Write one paragraph for each supporting reason. Don’t forget to include examples or facts.

3. Conclusion

Summarize your ideas and restate your opinion using different words.

Transition words and phrases

In your essay you have to organize all your ideas in a logical and coherent way. You can use different transition words or phrases to connect your ideas . Transition words and phrases help the reader understand your point of view easily.

In the table below there is a list of common transition words that you can use in your opinion essays.

Nowadays, many people prefer to adopt dogs or cats, but which of them are the better pets? Personally, I think that it is better to have cats as pets for the following reasons:

First of all, cats are more independent than dogs. For example, if you need to go on a trip, cats can live alone for 3 or 4 days. In addition, you only need to put enough water and food in a bowl and a sandbox so they can pee and poop when they need.

Secondly, cats are very clean and you don´t need to pay for someone to bathe them, unlike dogs, which must be bathed at least every week, because they smell bad. In my experience, I had a cat 7 years ago and only needed to bathe him 3 times during 5 years, because, he used to bathe himself.

Finally, cats are more calm and quiet than dogs. For instance, cats sleep during the day and at night they wake up. However, they are very quiet so you can sleep relaxed. In addition, cats only meow softly and do not bark loudly like dogs.

Los exámenes de Cambridge English suelen tener varias partes: Reading, Writing, Use of English, Speaking y Listening. En este post te voy a hablar del  Writing del B2  First (FCE) y, más concretamente sobre  cómo escribir un essay para el FCE de Cambridge English .

¿Qué partes tiene el FCE Writing?

El  Writing del First (FCE)  tiene dos partes únicamente. Para cada parte tienes que hacer una composición escrita que dependerá de las instrucciones de cada ejercicio. En la  primera parte  siempre se te pedirá que  escribas un essay (ensayo), ya que únicamente se te da una opción. En la  segunda parte  te dan 3 opciones entre las que puedes elegir. De entre éstas, los  tipos de writing  que aparecen son  letters/ emails  (cartas o emails),  articles   (artículos),  reviews  (reseñas) y  reports  (informes). Cada writing debe tener entre  140 y 190 palabras , aproximadamente.

Al tratarse de diferentes  tipos de Writings , las expresiones y estructuras que utilizarás serán diferentes. Pero para eso estoy yo aquí, para explicarte cómo escribir cada uno, y hoy empezamos con  cómo escribir un essay .

Cómo escribir un Essay para el FCE Writing

Un  essay , en español «ensayo», es un escrito de opinión con el que  analizamos un tema , una situación o un problema desde  diferentes puntos de vista ,  argumentando  cada uno de ellos y  expresando nuestra opinión  al respecto. Por este motivo, un  essay  tiene las siguientes características:

• Próposito:  Con un essay lo que hacemos es valuar un tema, situación o problema que sea, de algún modo, de interés o controvertido. Normalmente se plantea como una actividad a realizar después de un debate que ha tenido lugar en clase. En el examen, evidentemente, el debate te lo tendrás que imaginar.
• Tono y registro:  Al tratarse de un writing sobre un  tema serio o controvertido , el essay es un escrito formal, por lo que debemos utilizar un  tono objetivo . Además, el registro lingüístico deberá ser formal, evitando palabras comunes (Ej.:  things, stuff, get,  etc.) y contracciones (Ej.:  can’t, don’t, won’t , etc.).
• Estructura:  Como todos los escritos,  un essay debe tener una estructura definida . Para empezar, podemos elegir darle un título o no. Personalmente, a mí me parece más adecuado escribir un  essay con título . Luego, el cuerpo debe estar dividido en introducción, idea 1, idea 2, idea 3 y conclusión. Es decir, por lo general,  un essay debe tener 5 párrafos , aunque no es obligatorio.
• Opinión:  Existen incontables formas de expresar tu opinión en un essay, por lo que debes elegir la que mejor se ajuste a tu estilo. Sin embargo,  lo normal es mantenerte imparcial durante todo el escrito y expresar tu opinión únicamente en el último párrafo , a modo de conclusión. Lo más importante es que justifiques todo lo que dices en el escrito.
• Coherencia:  La coherencia es fundamental en todos los escritos, pero especialmente en el essay. Al tratarse de un texto justificativo y argumentativo, no se pueden escribir oraciones y párrafos inconexos, por lo que  tus ideas deben seguir un orden lógico y bien conectado utilizando connectores apropiados .

Ejemplo de FCE Writing Essay

Ahora que sabemos las  características de un essay para el First (FCE) Writing , vamos a ver un  ejemplo de essay a nivel B2 , tanto la tarea de ejemplo como una posible respuesta.

Instrucciones de un Essay

En la siguiente imagen puedes ver las instrucciones de un essay con un tema muy recurrente, como es el del medio ambiente:

En las instrucciones debemos fijarnos en lo siguiente:

• En el  primer párrafo  nos introducen la temática: … different ways in which you can protect the environment.
• La  segunda frase  suele ser la misma en todas las tareas:  Write an essay using  all  the notes…
• En  el recuadro  te plantean la idea principal en forma de pregunta y te dan anotaciones sobre lo que tienes que hablar:  recycle, using bicycles and walking, your own idea . Como ves, la tercera idea ha de ser de cosecha propia, es decir, te la tienes que inventar tú y debe ser algo relacionado con la misma temática.

Según el modelo de tarea planteado arriba, cada párrafo corresponderá a una idea diferente, aparte de la introducción y la conclusión. Es decir, lo normal es que nos salgan 5 párrafos. A continuación tienes un  ejemplo de essay para FCE Writing :

Como puedes observar a simple vista, el essay tiene un  título introductorio y 5 párrafos  (introducción + idea 1 + idea 2 + idea 3 + conclusión). Si nos paramos a leer el essay detenidamente, veremos lo siguiente:

• El essay tiene  párrafos bien definidos  visualmente, lo cual es muy importante.
• El título resume la temática  del essay. Otra opción es utilizar la pregunta de las instrucciones ( What can people do to help protect the environment? ). Sin embargo, a mí me suele parecer demasiado larga, por lo que prefiero resumirla en un título más corto.
• Introducción:  introduce el tema de una manera general y da pie a continuar con el segundo párrafo.
• Párrafo 2:  trata la idea 1 de la tarea.
• Párrafo 3:  trata la idea 2 de la tarea.
• Párrafo 4:  trata la idea 3 de la tarea (your own idea).
• Conclusión:  expresa nuestra opinión a modo de conclusión y resumen.
• Utiliza conectores para definir la progresión del texto: firstly, second, finally, etc.
• No utiliza muchas contracciones ni palabras comodín.

• In conclusion,

Se trata de un buen  ejemplo de essay  para el  FCE Writing . Hay que tener en cuenta, además, que este writing está escrito para simular un nivel B2, sin llegar a un nivel C1.

¿Me penalizan si me paso de las 190 palabras?

Esta es la pregunta más típica en esta parte del examen y la respuesta es la siguiente:  sí  y  no . Me explico. Los correctores no cuentan las palabras y te penalizan en función del número de palabras sola y exclusivamente. Corre el rumor entre los alumnos y profesores de que por cada 10 palabras te quitan puntos, pero eso no es cierto. Ahora bien, piensa que si te has pasado en 50 o 100 palabras, o más, probablemente estés metiendo  información poco relevante a la tarea , y eso  sí que es penalizable . Del mismo modo que  si escribes menos de 140 probablemente te falte información importante  o no la estés cubriendo con el detalle que se te pide.

Por ello, yo siempre recomiendo pasarse como mucho 10 o 20 palabras. De ese modo no perderás puntos si la tarea cubre los puntos que se te piden.

Cómo escribir un «Opinion Essay» en inglés (part 1)

Los que estéis preparando la prueba de acceso a la universidad (PAU) , algún examen de certificación de nivel, o los que sencillamente deseéis mejorar vuestro writing en inglés  encontraréis este post especialmente útil .

Empezaremos aclarando en qué consiste un Opinion Essay  y las particularidades de su estructura . También incluiremos los conectores   más útiles en este tipo de ejercicios, así como algunas tips para añadirle un toque extra a nuestro trabajo.

¿Qué es un Opinion Essay ?

Como bien indica su nombre se trata de un ejercicio de redacción en el que  damos nuestra opinión sobre algún tema en concreto. Debemos posicionarnos desde la introducción , dejando perfectamente claro nuestro punto de vista al respecto. Para ello, incluiremos diferentes razones y ejemplos que apoyen nuestros argumentos.

Así mismo, es recomendable mostrar también una visión opuesta a la nuestra, además de la explicación por la cual nos parece discutible tal razonamiento.   Por supuesto, todo ello debe estar perfectamente distribuido en párrafos.

Estructura:

Como se menciona en el apartado anterior, la estructura del Opinion Essay (o de cualquier redacción) debe quedar bien definida . El lector debe ser capaz de distinguir sus partes tan solo echando un vistazo, incluso sin haber comenzado a leer. Tenemos que distinguir cada uno de los párrafos que forman parte de la estructura:

Introducción

Deberás dejar claro tu punto de vista acerca del tema planteado en el título. Aquí os propongo algunas maneras de expresar vuestra opinión .

Tips para la introducción

1. Arrancar

Lo más difícil suele ser arrancar …parece que no se nos ocurre nada. Si es así, os recomiendo que comparéis la situación actual con respecto a ese tema, con el pasado . En todo (o casi todo) se ha producido algún cambio o  evolución . Con lo cual, comenzaremos diciendo algo así como: “ Actualmente pasa esto…en el pasado las cosas eran diferentes”.

Pero por favor…¡no metáis la pata ya desde el principio! ¿Cómo se dice “ actualmente ” en inglés?

Noooo!!! Actually, nooooo!!!!” Es un false friend!! Lo correcto sería: nowadays, currently, now, these days , entre otros. Pincha aquí para descargarte una lista en PDF con los 50 False Friends más comunes en inglés-español.

2. I think that…

Huid del tan manido “ I think that…”. No, no es que esté mal, pero, a estos niveles… resulta cansino, monótono y denota falta de vocabulario . Empezad a usar otras formas . A fin de cuentas, se trata de demostrar vuestro nivel de inglés, ¿no?

3. Intensifiers

Usad intensificadores del tipo “I completely agree” Otorgarán fuerza a vuestras opiniones y además…suman! Recordad que por norma general os pedirán entorno a 100-120 palabras. Otros intensificadores podrían ser: 

En este post enumero más adverbios de grado que te ayudarán a dar  énfasis a tus palabras y mostrar un vocabulario más extenso a la hora de expresar tu opinión en tu fantástico Opinion Essay 😀 .

4. Empieza preguntando 

También existe la posibilidad de comenzar vuestra introducción planteando una pregunta relacionada con el tema. Es original y encaminará al lector a anticipar los futuros argumentos que se derivarán de esa cuestión inicial.

Por ejemplo, en el tema: “Technology is making communication easier nowadays. Do you agree?”  

A lo que nosotros podríamos plantear lo siguiente: “ Can you imagine a world without cell phones or computers? Well, I can’t.” Tras leerlo, el lector tendrá ya claro nuestro posicionamiento . Inconscientemente se hará una idea del tipo de argumentos que se irán sucediendo a continuación .

5. Quien mal empieza…

Ahora bien, esta «creativa idea» de comenzar lanzando una pregunta puede ser un arma de doble filo .

Por un lado, ya vimos sus ventajas . Pero pensemos en sus posibles peligros : ¿Qué pasa si estructuramos mal una simple pregunta ?

Pues que daremos muy mala imagen desde el comienzo. Fallos garrafales en estructuras relativamente sencillas son penalizadas, l o que se traducirá en una nota más baja en nuestro trabajo.

Además, si la pregunta no tiene relación con nuestros futuros argumentos, o nos contradecimos, pecaremos de incoherentes . Y de nuevo, se nos castigará por ello. Así que, usad solo lo que estéis seguros de que os llevará a ganar puntos y no todo lo contrario, en resumen, ¡ no os metáis en jardines!!  

Recurso interesante

Hay un recurso para escribir correctamente en inglés que me encanta y es GRATIS.

Se llama Grammarly .

Es una extensión de Chrome muy útil si tienes que escribir redacciones, essays o cartas en ‪ inglés‬.

Lo que hace la extensión es que, mientras escribes:

-Elimina ERRORES GRAMATICALES (ejemplo: «Has usado el tiempo verbal equivocado..»

-Te ofrece SINÓNIMOS para crear un texto más claro y directo.

-Te avisa sobre errores de puntuación (ejemplo: «Te falta una coma después del conector X»)

¡Échale un vistazo, seguro que lo encuentras súper útil para escribir anything  en inglés! ?

Moreover, remember that the introduction should be catchy. How to write a hook for an opinion essay? In simple words, this is a proposal that should interest the reader and draw his attention. It should be subject-related and relatively accurate. All you have to do is show the reader that the topic of the essay will be critical and even touch it.

Opinion Essay: Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is the final sentence of an introduction . It is an integral part of the entire text. And if your essay will be evaluated, then the absence of the thesis will significantly underestimate the point. So how do you write the last sentence competently so that the reader will like it?

At its core, in the thesis, you should summarize everything that you indicated in the introduction and, in a nutshell, make it clear what will be discussed. You are expected to state your position on the issue clearly. And then, the entire text should be directed precisely to reinforce your words.

Connecting structures are an invisible companion for the reader throughout the entire essay. They are also called linkers or transitional words . At their core, these two concepts mean the exact phrases. Their task is to make the text more readable and smoothly translate the reader from one idea to another. Moreover, all these constructions are divided into subgroups depending on their purpose. Let’s take a look at a couple of examples of good transition words for an opinion essay:

• It is clear that…, etc.
• It is widely known that…
• It is a well-known fact that…
• Research has shown that…
• There are definitely…
• It is a fact that…, etc.

There are also brilliant linkers for opinion essays on these themes:

• However, etc.
• To conclude…
• In conclusion…, etc.

Using these constructions, you will significantly increase the consistency of your text and help the reader to perceive it better.

I think not, and in this essay, I will try to explain my position. The first thing worth paying attention to is the changes that we can see every day. Many international treaties have long banned the death penalty, but this does not prevent several countries from regularly using it against criminals. I think this is a terrible practice that has no place in our civilized world. The argument for this may be the simple idea that every creature has a right to life. And this right cannot be taken away under any condition because you can take a dangerous path by creating an incident. One Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov spoke very accurately about this: “The existence of the institution of the death penalty dehumanizes society. I spoke out and am opposed to the death penalty also because this punishment provides for the presence of a constantly terrible apparatus of executors, the whole institution of the death penalty ”. I fully support his words because there is no reason not to kill the second after killing once. It should also be understood that people sentenced to death are not always, in fact, guilty. There is a miscarriage of justice, and no one can be insured against it. The most resonant was the story from 1949. Timothy Evans was hanged on charges of murdering his pregnant wife and two-year-old daughter. Four years later, it wasn’t until serial killer John Christie, who had testified in court against Evans, confessed to the murder. He was hanged, and Timothy Evans was posthumously rehabilitated. The Timothy Evans case is one of the most remarkable stories in the death penalty dispute. To summarize, I can say that there are many reasons for the absolute ban on the death penalty in the world. This is not only inhuman but can lead to unnecessary deaths. Fighting crime in this way, the people who defend the law themselves break it.

Opinion essay on smoking: should the state intervene? (300 words)

Smoking is a global problem. Experts predict that in the coming decades, the number of smokers will reach one billion people worldwide. In my opinion, governments should take strict measures to limit nicotine use among the population. Firstly, smoking poses enormous hardships for addicts. All this can increase the number of cancer patients and people suffering from heart and lung diseases. At the same time, it can be tough to give up cigarettes on your own. We all understand that nicotine in quantities that a person receives from cigarettes is not characteristic of the body. Therefore, our body can react in an extraordinary way to its appearance. An example may well be my family, suffering from heart problems for several generations. All men, from my great-grandfather to my father, visit doctors all the time. And they all have one reason – excessive smoking. At the same time, they cannot quit smoking on their own due to a banal addiction. Secondly, smokers can damage the health of other people nearby. It is a well-known fact that secondhand smoke is no less harmful than the regular use of nicotine. And unfortunately, non-smokers, in most cases, have no choice. You can see it yourself in everyday life. People who are forced to breathe smoke while sitting at bus stops or in public places simply cannot do anything about it. The only way to help them is to introduce more and more restrictions from the state. So, in conclusion, we can say that smoking is not only a problem for the person addicted to cigarettes. Everyone suffers from this, from his family to strangers around him. Unfortunately, these difficulties cannot be resolved on their own. But is the state and society doing enough to help people with addiction?

How to Write an Opinion Based Essay

In the CAE course , students focus on preparing for the exam and teachers introduce and teach a number of strategies and tips for optimally completing all parts of the exam. One such strategy that is trained in class is the writing of an opinion based essay.

An opinion essay is a formal piece of writing which requires your opinion on a topic. Your opinion should be stated clearly. Throughout the essay you will give various arguments/reasons/viewpoints on the topic and these will be supported by evidence and/or examples. You could also include an opposing viewpoint in a paragraph.

When writing your title ask yourself: Do you agree or disagree with your topic? Then write that statement as the title of your essay. (Example title: Poaching should be banned internationally.)

2. Introduction

-‘Hook’: The first paragraph of an essay is the introduction and needs to include a ‘hook’ which is writing that grabs the reader’s attention. A ‘hook’ can include data or a statistic.

-Thesis statement: The introduction also includes the thesis statement. A thesis statement is the major statement or claim or opinion of your essay.  

3. Argument/Reason

In an opinion based essay you will make several arguments that will defend your thesis statement. For every argument/reason you need to provide evidence. You could have several arguments or reasons

4. Supporting evidence

Every argument/reason must be supported by evidence which can be in the form of additional research, quoting an academic/paper, data and graphics. What is important here is that the research and data are accurate and actually defend you reason.

*There can be several argument/reason paragraphs followed by several supporting paragraphs. You could also mention an opposing viewpoint in one of these paragraphs.

5. Conclusion

The conclusion of any essay sums up the thoughts and ideas that were written throughout the essay. In an opinion based essay conclusion, the thesis statement is usually rewritten in the writer’s own words to highlight his/her agreement or disagreement with the topic. A conclusion is a powerful way to end an essay and should leave the reader (Example: To sum up, poaching kills thousands of animals annually resulting in many species on the endangered species list. Conservation of these animals is expensive and time-consuming. I believe it is therefore undeniable that there should be a ban on international poaching.)

I think that my country has problems with pollution to the environment like all other countries. This problem is normal for Russia. We have big problems with transport because there are too much cars in our country. I’ve heard about tradition of one country. They don’t go anywhere by car one day a month or a year, they just use bycicle or their feet. I think it could be very good if we had a tradition like that.

So, what about the rivers and the seas? Yeah, there are some really good and clean rivers and seas where you can go, but there are not many of them. Once I saw the river OB in my city, it was about two years ago but I stil remember that in some places it was not blue, it was green or purple I didn’t really understand because it had different colours.

I don’t know what should we do. Maybe we should just open our eyes and look what we did. But Russian people don’t care about the world around them many people care only about themselves an that’s all.

So, the best idea is look around and try to do something good for our planet and for us and our children.

To begin with pollution and damage to the environment is the most serious and difficult problem for countries of all over the world. Scientists of different countries predict a global ecocatastrophe if people won’t change their attitude to our planet.

First of all a huge damage to the environment brings a transport. People can’t imagine their living without cars, buses, trains, ships and planes. But it’s an open secret that one of disadvantage of these accustomed things is harmful exhaust. Needless to say that use of environment friendly engines helps us to save atmosphere from pollution.

Apart from this I’m inclined to believe that every person can and must contribute to solving this important problem. Doing a little steps for protection our environment every day we will be able to save our Earth. And it’s a task of each of us.

But what about ourselves? We also can do a lot! If, when possible, we bought larger packs of food, we would be producing less rubbish. And this is only an example!

The society we live today is characterised by technology in constant development, fast speed processes, information travelling and getting to people at a blink of an eye and a complex web of social networking. In this context, the fashion industry is becoming increasingly important and having a more and more paramount role in our lives.

On one hand, the fashion industry is undeniably a source of profit and income. It hires millions of people all over the world and generates millions of dollars every year. Furthermore, such profitable business is also believed to be able to spread and make known the culture of a people, encouraging and enhancing a better understanding of each other.

Nevertheless, for those who are neither impressed nor motivated by numbers and figures, the fashion industry is seen as one which segregates people, isolating those who not fit their laws and commands. It is stated that people place too much importance on appearance and the material, world, sadly true, and the fashion industry just spurs on such situation. Moreover, not only are the costs of fashion item unrealistically high, it is thought to be a money better spent on more pressing issues, such as poverty and hunger.

I do believe that the fashion industry, as it is today, has a harmful effect, because it values a minority of people in detriment to the majority. However, it has such a wide reach that, it put into a good use, it can save lives.

That’s the reason why we start studying it from the age of six years old. Going abroad and being able to speak to native people is very satisfying and that’s why I want to improve my knowledge about foreign languages.

I decided to take this exam to know how high my level of English is, but also because I need this certification to go abroad next summer. I really want to come back to Cornwall, an amazing region in the South-West of England. I’ve been there twice with my family, but now I want to go alone. Only being there to England I can really improve my English comprehension and speaking skills.

Fortunately I can will have some English lessons which taught in English at university and I can’t wait for it because it will be an interesting challenge for me. Studying foreign languages is essential to live and to travel. It isn’t simple and I surely have to challenge myself everyday, but the result is so satisfying that we I can’t do without it.

Why the Pandemic Probably Started in a Lab, in 5 Key Points

On Monday, Dr. Anthony Fauci returned to the halls of Congress and testified before the House subcommittee investigating the Covid-19 pandemic. He was questioned about several topics related to the government’s handling of Covid-19, including how the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which he directed until retiring in 2022, supported risky virus work at a Chinese institute whose research may have caused the pandemic.

For more than four years, reflexive partisan politics have derailed the search for the truth about a catastrophe that has touched us all. It has been estimated that at least 25 million people around the world have died because of Covid-19, with over a million of those deaths in the United States.

Although how the pandemic started has been hotly debated, a growing volume of evidence — gleaned from public records released under the Freedom of Information Act, digital sleuthing through online databases, scientific papers analyzing the virus and its spread, and leaks from within the U.S. government — suggests that the pandemic most likely occurred because a virus escaped from a research lab in Wuhan, China. If so, it would be the most costly accident in the history of science.

Here’s what we now know:

1 The SARS-like virus that caused the pandemic emerged in Wuhan, the city where the world’s foremost research lab for SARS-like viruses is located.

• At the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a team of scientists had been hunting for SARS-like viruses for over a decade, led by Shi Zhengli.
• Their research showed that the viruses most similar to SARS‑CoV‑2, the virus that caused the pandemic, circulate in bats that live r oughly 1,000 miles away from Wuhan. Scientists from Dr. Shi’s team traveled repeatedly to Yunnan province to collect these viruses and had expanded their search to Southeast Asia. Bats in other parts of China have not been found to carry viruses that are as closely related to SARS-CoV-2.

• Even at hot spots where these viruses exist naturally near the cave bats of southwestern China and Southeast Asia, the scientists argued, as recently as 2019 , that bat coronavirus spillover into humans is rare .
• When the Covid-19 outbreak was detected, Dr. Shi initially wondered if the novel coronavirus had come from her laboratory , saying she had never expected such an outbreak to occur in Wuhan.
• The SARS‑CoV‑2 virus is exceptionally contagious and can jump from species to species like wildfire . Yet it left no known trace of infection at its source or anywhere along what would have been a thousand-mile journey before emerging in Wuhan.

2 The year before the outbreak, the Wuhan institute, working with U.S. partners, had proposed creating viruses with SARS‑CoV‑2’s defining feature.

• Dr. Shi’s group was fascinated by how coronaviruses jump from species to species. To find viruses, they took samples from bats and other animals , as well as from sick people living near animals carrying these viruses or associated with the wildlife trade. Much of this work was conducted in partnership with the EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based scientific organization that, since 2002, has been awarded over $80 million in federal funding to research the risks of emerging infectious diseases.
• The laboratory pursued risky research that resulted in viruses becoming more infectious : Coronaviruses were grown from samples from infected animals and genetically reconstructed and recombined to create new viruses unknown in nature. These new viruses were passed through cells from bats, pigs, primates and humans and were used to infect civets and humanized mice (mice modified with human genes). In essence, this process forced these viruses to adapt to new host species, and the viruses with mutations that allowed them to thrive emerged as victors.
• By 2019, Dr. Shi’s group had published a database describing more than 22,000 collected wildlife samples. But external access was shut off in the fall of 2019, and the database was not shared with American collaborators even after the pandemic started , when such a rich virus collection would have been most useful in tracking the origin of SARS‑CoV‑2. It remains unclear whether the Wuhan institute possessed a precursor of the pandemic virus.
• In 2021, The Intercept published a leaked 2018 grant proposal for a research project named Defuse , which had been written as a collaboration between EcoHealth, the Wuhan institute and Ralph Baric at the University of North Carolina, who had been on the cutting edge of coronavirus research for years. The proposal described plans to create viruses strikingly similar to SARS‑CoV‑2.
• Coronaviruses bear their name because their surface is studded with protein spikes, like a spiky crown, which they use to enter animal cells. T he Defuse project proposed to search for and create SARS-like viruses carrying spikes with a unique feature: a furin cleavage site — the same feature that enhances SARS‑CoV‑2’s infectiousness in humans, making it capable of causing a pandemic. Defuse was never funded by the United States . However, in his testimony on Monday, Dr. Fauci explained that the Wuhan institute would not need to rely on U.S. funding to pursue research independently.

In Defuse, the scientists proposed to add a furin cleavage site to the spike protein.

3. Create new coronaviruses by inserting spike proteins or other features that could make the viruses more infectious in humans.

4. Infect human cells, civets and humanized mice with the new coronaviruses, to determine how dangerous they might be.

• While it’s possible that the furin cleavage site could have evolved naturally (as seen in some distantly related coronaviruses), out of the hundreds of SARS-like viruses cataloged by scientists, SARS‑CoV‑2 is the only one known to possess a furin cleavage site in its spike. And the genetic data suggest that the virus had only recently gained the furin cleavage site before it started the pandemic.
• Ultimately, a never-before-seen SARS-like virus with a newly introduced furin cleavage site, matching the description in the Wuhan institute’s Defuse proposal, caused an outbreak in Wuhan less than two years after the proposal was drafted.
• When the Wuhan scientists published their seminal paper about Covid-19 as the pandemic roared to life in 2020, they did not mention the virus’s furin cleavage site — a feature they should have been on the lookout for, according to their own grant proposal, and a feature quickly recognized by other scientists.
• Worse still, as the pandemic raged, their American collaborators failed to publicly reveal the existence of the Defuse proposal. The president of EcoHealth, Peter Daszak, recently admitted to Congress that he doesn’t know about virus samples collected by the Wuhan institute after 2015 and never asked the lab’s scientists if they had started the work described in Defuse. In May, citing failures in EcoHealth’s monitoring of risky experiments conducted at the Wuhan lab, the Biden administration suspended all federal funding for the organization and Dr. Daszak, and initiated proceedings to bar them from receiving future grants. In his testimony on Monday, Dr. Fauci said that he supported the decision to suspend and bar EcoHealth.
• Separately, Dr. Baric described the competitive dynamic between his research group and the institute when he told Congress that the Wuhan scientists would probably not have shared their most interesting newly discovered viruses with him . Documents and email correspondence between the institute and Dr. Baric are still being withheld from the public while their release is fiercely contested in litigation.
• In the end, American partners very likely knew of only a fraction of the research done in Wuhan. According to U.S. intelligence sources, some of the institute’s virus research was classified or conducted with or on behalf of the Chinese military . In the congressional hearing on Monday, Dr. Fauci repeatedly acknowledged the lack of visibility into experiments conducted at the Wuhan institute, saying, “None of us can know everything that’s going on in China, or in Wuhan, or what have you. And that’s the reason why — I say today, and I’ve said at the T.I.,” referring to his transcribed interview with the subcommittee, “I keep an open mind as to what the origin is.”

3 The Wuhan lab pursued this type of work under low biosafety conditions that could not have contained an airborne virus as infectious as SARS‑CoV‑2.

• Labs working with live viruses generally operate at one of four biosafety levels (known in ascending order of stringency as BSL-1, 2, 3 and 4) that describe the work practices that are considered sufficiently safe depending on the characteristics of each pathogen. The Wuhan institute’s scientists worked with SARS-like viruses under inappropriately low biosafety conditions .

In the United States, virologists generally use stricter Biosafety Level 3 protocols when working with SARS-like viruses.

• In one experiment, Dr. Shi’s group genetically engineered an unexpectedly deadly SARS-like virus (not closely related to SARS‑CoV‑2) that exhibited a 10,000-fold increase in the quantity of virus in the lungs and brains of humanized mice . Wuhan institute scientists handled these live viruses at low biosafet y levels , including BSL-2.
• Even the much more stringent containment at BSL-3 cannot fully prevent SARS‑CoV‑2 from escaping . Two years into the pandemic, the virus infected a scientist in a BSL-3 laboratory in Taiwan, which was, at the time, a zero-Covid country. The scientist had been vaccinated and was tested only after losing the sense of smell. By then, more than 100 close contacts had been exposed. Human error is a source of exposure even at the highest biosafety levels , and the risks are much greater for scientists working with infectious pathogens at low biosafety.
• An early draft of the Defuse proposal stated that the Wuhan lab would do their virus work at BSL-2 to make it “highly cost-effective.” Dr. Baric added a note to the draft highlighting the importance of using BSL-3 to contain SARS-like viruses that could infect human cells, writing that “U.S. researchers will likely freak out.” Years later, after SARS‑CoV‑2 had killed millions, Dr. Baric wrote to Dr. Daszak : “I have no doubt that they followed state determined rules and did the work under BSL-2. Yes China has the right to set their own policy. You believe this was appropriate containment if you want but don’t expect me to believe it. Moreover, don’t insult my intelligence by trying to feed me this load of BS.”
• SARS‑CoV‑2 is a stealthy virus that transmits effectively through the air, causes a range of symptoms similar to those of other common respiratory diseases and can be spread by infected people before symptoms even appear. If the virus had escaped from a BSL-2 laboratory in 2019, the leak most likely would have gone undetected until too late.
• One alarming detail — leaked to The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by current and former U.S. government officials — is that scientists on Dr. Shi’s team fell ill with Covid-like symptoms in the fall of 2019 . One of the scientists had been named in the Defuse proposal as the person in charge of virus discovery work. The scientists denied having been sick .

4 The hypothesis that Covid-19 came from an animal at the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan is not supported by strong evidence.

• In December 2019, Chinese investigators assumed the outbreak had started at a centrally located market frequented by thousands of visitors daily. This bias in their search for early cases meant that cases unlinked to or located far away from the market would very likely have been missed. To make things worse, the Chinese authorities blocked the reporting of early cases not linked to the market and, claiming biosafety precautions, ordered the destruction of patient samples on January 3, 2020, making it nearly impossible to see the complete picture of the earliest Covid-19 cases. Information about dozens of early cases from November and December 2019 remains inaccessible.
• A pair of papers published in Science in 2022 made the best case for SARS‑CoV‑2 having emerged naturally from human-animal contact at the Wuhan market by focusing on a map of the early cases and asserting that the virus had jumped from animals into humans twice at the market in 2019. More recently, the two papers have been countered by other virologists and scientists who convincingly demonstrate that the available market evidence does not distinguish between a human superspreader event and a natural spillover at the market.
• Furthermore, the existing genetic and early case data show that all known Covid-19 cases probably stem from a single introduction of SARS‑CoV‑2 into people, and the outbreak at the Wuhan market probably happened after the virus had already been circulating in humans.

The viruses that infected people linked to the market were most likely not the earliest form of the virus that started the pandemic.

• Not a single infected animal has ever been confirmed at the market or in its supply chain. Without good evidence that the pandemic started at the Huanan Seafood Market, the fact that the virus emerged in Wuhan points squarely at its unique SARS-like virus laboratory.

In previous outbreaks of coronaviruses, scientists were able to demonstrate natural origin by collecting multiple pieces of evidence linking infected humans to infected animals.

• Despite the intense search trained on the animal trade and people linked to the market, investigators have not reported finding any animals infected with SARS‑CoV‑2 that had not been infected by humans. Yet, infected animal sources and other connective pieces of evidence were found for the earlier SARS and MERS outbreaks as quickly as within a few days, despite the less advanced viral forensic technologies of two decades ago.
• Even though Wuhan is the home base of virus hunters with world-leading expertise in tracking novel SARS-like viruses, investigators have either failed to collect or report key evidence that would be expected if Covid-19 emerged from the wildlife trade . For example, investigators have not determined that the earliest known cases had exposure to intermediate host animals before falling ill. No antibody evidence shows that animal traders in Wuhan are regularly exposed to SARS-like viruses, as would be expected in such situations.
• With today’s technology, scientists can detect how respiratory viruses — including SARS, MERS and the flu — circulate in animals while making repeated attempts to jump across species . Thankfully, these variants usually fail to transmit well after crossing over to a new species and tend to die off after a small number of infections. In contrast, virologists and other scientists agree that SARS‑CoV‑2 required little to no adaptation to spread rapidly in humans and other animals . The virus appears to have succeeded in causing a pandemic upon its only detected jump into humans.

The pandemic could have been caused by any of hundreds of virus species, at any of tens of thousands of wildlife markets, in any of thousands of cities, and in any year. But it was a SARS-like coronavirus with a unique furin cleavage site that emerged in Wuhan, less than two years after scientists, sometimes working under inadequate biosafety conditions, proposed collecting and creating viruses of that same design.

While several natural spillover scenarios remain plausible, and we still don’t know enough about the full extent of virus research conducted at the Wuhan institute by Dr. Shi’s team and other researchers, a laboratory accident is the most parsimonious explanation of how the pandemic began.

Given what we now know, investigators should follow their strongest leads and subpoena all exchanges between the Wuhan scientists and their international partners, including unpublished research proposals, manuscripts, data and commercial orders. In particular, exchanges from 2018 and 2019 — the critical two years before the emergence of Covid-19 — are very likely to be illuminating (and require no cooperation from the Chinese government to acquire), yet they remain beyond the public’s view more than four years after the pandemic began.

Whether the pandemic started on a lab bench or in a market stall, it is undeniable that U.S. federal funding helped to build an unprecedented collection of SARS-like viruses at the Wuhan institute, as well as contributing to research that enhanced them . Advocates and funders of the institute’s research, including Dr. Fauci, should cooperate with the investigation to help identify and close the loopholes that allowed such dangerous work to occur. The world must not continue to bear the intolerable risks of research with the potential to cause pandemics .

A successful investigation of the pandemic’s root cause would have the power to break a decades-long scientific impasse on pathogen research safety, determining how governments will spend billions of dollars to prevent future pandemics. A credible investigation would also deter future acts of negligence and deceit by demonstrating that it is indeed possible to be held accountable for causing a viral pandemic. Last but not least, people of all nations need to see their leaders — and especially, their scientists — heading the charge to find out what caused this world-shaking event. Restoring public trust in science and government leadership requires it.

A thorough investigation by the U.S. government could unearth more evidence while spurring whistleblowers to find their courage and seek their moment of opportunity. It would also show the world that U.S. leaders and scientists are not afraid of what the truth behind the pandemic may be.
