OR those who have spent years absorbing life lessons from “Entourage,” PH-D is Xanadu: a glittering room of celebrities, beautiful women and cresting credit-card bills. The nightclub, which opened in June on the roof of the Dream Downtown hotel, is the latest endeavor from the impresarios behind Marquee, Tao and other successful playgrounds for the well heeled.
One recent evening, patrons looking for a soupy breather packed the terrace, a walkway flanked by black couches and groomed shrubbery. Bottles of Champagne and vodka cooled in tabletop ice basins. A man wearing a blue-check dress shirt and white trousers captivated pals with a joke from the trading floor. The kicker: “I’m on margin right now and can’t call you back!” Nearby tenement apartments seemed several universes removed.
At the southern edge of Chelsea, PH-D sits atop Vikram Chatwal’s 316-room hotel, which also houses a poolside beach club and a steakhouse. While other lounges cultivate the timeworn comfort of a great-aunt’s living room, PH-D is a fine-cut diamond of glass and polished surfaces. Triple-tiered chandeliers with hundreds of glass rods hang above marble tables and leather seats. Midtown twinkles in the expansive view.
THE CROWD A testament to the timeless compatibility of wealth and attractiveness, PH-D is a crush of men in business-casual attire and women who rarely spend weekdays in an office. Like tipsy flamingos, models teeter around the room and dance on couches. At a recent installment of the popular Tuesday night party, a few craned over Wilmer Valderrama, an actor from “That ’70s Show,” who shared bottles of vodka with cronies and rapped along with Jay-Z records. Later that week, Edward Norton and Woody Harrelson stopped in, perhaps reminiscing about “The People vs. Larry Flynt.”
GETTING IN PH-D is no shoebox (capacity: 400) but table reservations, IMDb profiles and tear sheets from Céline help to lubricate an elevator ride upstairs. Everyone else is left to the mercy of the doorman after 9:30 p.m.
DRINKS The emphasis is on table service, but more-frugal customers can lurk at the bar. Thriftiness is relative: specialty cocktails are $18, and with tax and tip automatically added to the bill, a Jameson on the rocks surpasses $21.

- The place has a stunning view with lines of sight including the Hudson River and Empire State Building.
- There is a cover charge at the door.

It was my first time at PHD Terrace. It was certainly an unforgettable experience. The place is beautifully decorated with white flowers and has a beautiful view at the heart of Times Square. We were seated on a Sunday evening with no reservation; the staff was very friendly and attentive. The food item was limited but it was good for the price. On average, everything is $20 each as well as drinks. I think everything was worth it and I would love to come here again!
This place would've gotten tons more stars if not for two things. One. We got Judge looks when we came to go have drinks. Asked if we had a reservation. We said no and we would probably be there less than in the hour. So they sat. What they didn't tell us? Number two. a rooftop bar in the rain? Yes, there were leaks. Everywhere. You had to walk through a little waterfall to get to the bathroom. Just exactly what I felt like having in my hair after being outside in the pouring rain. The decor inside is stunning. But it was wet. And staff was continually mopping up the floors across from us. Not a good vibe. On the other hand? My drink was over $20. I thought that was a lot for one drink. Even in New York. Not my vibe. I won't be back.
The view is STUNNING.. The view is STUNNING.. Lemme say it one more time ... THE VIEW IS STUNNING !!!! I was in awe. The vibe is fun and upbeat with the DJ it's very lively. The food is delicious too definitely an overall great time
WOW this place is a vibe! We mainly visited a little while ago for the aesthetic and the cute photo ops they had to offer and it did not disappoint! They had two different rooms we went through/drank in and both gave a different vibe. The ROOFTOP views though were worth it alone! A great spot to see some city lights without paying insane prices. We also all Loved our drinks!! The bartenders were very patient and knowledgeable! I ordered the Lavender Girl since I love floral and it did Not disappoint. My friend ordered the Cotton Candy Kisses since she loved sweeter drinks and absolutely loved it. Our other friend ordered a crafted drink by the bartender and liked hers as well. All in all we had SO much fun here as a night out, loved our drinks, and definitely the ambiance. Will Absolutely come back to visit when we are in the city next!!

It was a typical club. The drinks were not strong. It took quite a few to get a buzz. The music was ok. But it did not tend to tie cried because not too many people were out of their seats on a Saturday night.
PhD Terrace at Dream Hotel in New York, NY. It's just so pretty . The service was! This all season rooftop at Dream PhD Midtown is covered in flowers and has plenty of insta worthy . The crispy mac and cheese balls with white cheddar, parm and truffle aioli were a hit. Insta: @thehungrysw

Thursday 6pm Why we would choose to have our Christmas here , can't blame them as the intention was there . Situated in midtown with a gorgeous view of Times Square , unless you're a tourist and have time in the world to spare waiting for an elevator , then this is your place . One would think , ~350 people , one elevator with 6 people each , how long will it take to bring everyone up to the venue? Makes same to allocate 2 given it's a complete buyout but it wasn't the case. Who is the hotel event manager, this is basic math... Been here for drinks post work , it's my go to when out of town friends and colleagues are visiting . overpriced rooftop but you're paying for the view . I see how this place evolved with only one side of the rooftop open to its expansion ( allowing a better view of tsq). On a normal night , the food offering was better but for a private party , not so much . Tweak and be more efficient , this place is a fun , good ambiance , great spot in midtown .
Didn't realize they had taken down the flowers the day before. Main reason why we went. Suggest announcing when floral decor would be taken down. Would have delayed going. Food was OK, could be better.
Beautiful ambiance and views! The flower archway and the views of the night sky and city skyline are definitely the big draws here. Service can be a bit slow to getting your drinks, and the drinks aren't very strong. The ambiance, views, and photo ops are primarily what to come here for. This is a great place for a nightcap at the end of the night.
Flower archway
My best friend took me PHD for my birthday yesterday. She mentioned that they required her to add a card to make the reservation so be mindful of that. They require ID at the entrance and don't allow outside drinks such as water bottles inside. It's a beautiful venue. Fun fact if you didn't already know, PHD stands for Penthouse Dreams not Pent House Daddy or Degree ( one of the security men last night said that's what he thought it stood for lol. This is a great grown and sexy/ special occasion spot. They don't have a full food menu which is a con for me but the small bites on the menu were flavorful. We ordered the friends, shrimp, cheese all and empanadas. The drinks were pretty strong. The mezcal one was not my favorite. Overall this was a cute place to take birthday pictures. Highly recommend if you're looking for a special occasion spot in the city.

Considering the weight it carries in the admissions process, crafting a compelling PhD cover letter is paramount. This guide will provide insights and tips to ensure your passion, dedication, and scholarly potential are unmistakably evident to the admissions committee.
Key Takeaways

Do a deep dive into your academic background and research expertise and align them with the program's focus.
Clearly articulate your vision for the PhD, emphasizing the synergy between your goals and the program's offerings.
The Best Format for a PhD Cover Letter
Before you start writing your cover letter, it’s a good idea to go over all the important elements, as well as the standard format and layout. In fact, just as every research endeavor follows a methodology, your PhD cover letter for any industry should also be structured meticulously.
Here’s a breakdown of the optimal format for a PhD cover letter:
PhD Cover Letter Format
Contact Information : Begin with your name, university affiliation, phone number, and academic email. If you’re under the guidance of a research mentor, their details can be beneficial as well.
Greetings : Directly address the admissions committee or a specific faculty member by name, showcasing your genuine interest and dedication.
Introduction : Craft a compelling introduction that highlights your zeal for the chosen field and any pivotal academic accomplishments.
Body : Dive deep into your research experiences, academic accolades, and the research domains you’re eager to delve into. Aim for clarity and conciseness.
Conclusion and sign-off : Round off by expressing your eagerness to enhance the university’s research landscape and, finally, extend gratitude for their consideration.
In addition to that, you should also use a specific layout for your PhD cover letter to make it look professional.
To achieve this, you should:
PhD Cover Letter Layout
Stick to a formal academic letter format
Choose a clear, professional font such as Times New Roman or Georgia
Ensure the font size is between 10-12pts
Uphold 1-inch margins on all sides
Aim for a succinct cover letter, ideally confined to a single page, ensuring it’s devoid of any extraneous elements.
The following PhD cover letter entry-level template will assist you in crafting a well-organized document:
PhD Cover Letter Structure
Now that you have an idea of what to include in your cover letter and how to set it up, it’s time to go over every section of your document in detail.
#1. Header Essentials
The header of your PhD cover letter is crucial, as it provides the essential contact details. It needs to be clear and short.
Make sure to include:
Mandatory Header Information
Phone number
Professional email address
Institution you attended
Major or field of study
Following this, it’s imperative to specify the institution you’re applying to for your PhD . If you’re transitioning to a different university, highlight this to showcase your intent to broaden your academic horizons .

Applying to: Harvard University Department of Biological Sciences 12 Oxford St, Cambridge, MA 02138
#2. Addressing the Committee
If you want to start off your cover letter strong, you must give it a personalized touch. To do this, you may need to do some research . If you know the name of the committee chair or a key member, feel free to use it: “Dear Dr. Smith.”
However, in most cases, specific names might not be available. In such instances, generic but still formal and respectful greetings are appropriate.
Some suitable options include:
Addressing the Committee Examples
Dear Selection Committee,
Dear Admissions Committee,
To the Graduate Admissions Board,
Dear Committee Members,
#3. Opening Statement

Following this, delve into a brief overview of your academic background. Highlight where you’ve studied, your major, and any significant accomplishments or recognitions you’ve received .
Here is an example of an opening statement for a PhD cover letter:

Social Work (PhD)
Program description.
NYU Silver School of Social Work’s PhD program prepares students to become leading researchers and educators in the promotion of social justice and the health and well-being of marginalized communities nationally and globally.
Our intensive doctoral training competitively positions graduates for top-tier academic and research opportunities—such as faculty positions at leading research universities—cultivating the next wave of independent investigators, scholars, and social work leaders. Building on Silver’s nationally recognized strength in intervention and implementation research and our focus on addressing inequities, the PhD program prepares students to make their own unique contributions to the field of social welfare.
Our rigorous coursework educates students in classic and contemporary theory, cutting-edge quantitative, qualitative and mixed methodologies, and specialized learning in their substantive areas. The opportunity to take electives within the larger university allows students to explore further their areas and methodologies in an interdisciplinary classroom. NYU Silver also prepares students to be educators through training, including in anti-racist pedagogies, and hands-on experience teaching BSW and MSW level courses.
At the heart of our program is the mentored research practicum offering students the opportunity to put their learning into practice. NYU Silver PhD students are paired from day one with a research mentor as part of our personalized mentoring program , helping them develop competencies in core research, scholarship, and teaching areas. NYU Silver Faculty are renowned for their expertise in several key research areas, including racial and social justice, behavioral health services, child welfare, and aging. Program Requirements
Required coursework, non-coursework requirements, qualifying exam.
The qualifying exam will entail a choice between a systematic review or a comprehensive literature review of a given topic of interest. All students must pass a qualifying exam, which serves as an examination of what students have learned to date in the program and a determination of whether they are ready to engage in independent research. Successful completion of the qualifying exam also demonstrates that a student is able to adhere to accepted norms of scholarship and produce written work of publishable quality.
Dissertation Proposal
In creating a dissertation proposal, students will choose a topic or research question to study, and will form a dissertation committee based on their research area interest and faculty area of expertise. Students will submit their written proposal to the dissertation committee and arrange for an oral defense.
Dissertation
The student, in consultation with their dissertation committee, will determine the appropriate structure and form of the dissertation. All dissertations will be evaluated on the quality and clarity of the conception, writing, presentation, evidence of scholarship and systematic inquiry, originality, and significance to the field of social work. Students will submit a written dissertation and also have an oral defense of their dissertation, which is open to the public.
Note: The doctoral program does not prepare students for advanced practice in clinical social work or for licensure for social work practice in New York State. Students licensed as an LMSW or LCSW by the New York State Education Department may practice according to the guidelines of their particular license. Unlicensed students may not provide professional services in New York State unless otherwise authorized by state law.
Sample Plan of Study
Program-level student learning outcomes.
Upon completion of the Silver School of Social Work doctoral program, graduates will be able to:
- Provide leadership in the development of knowledge in a substantive area that is important to social work practice and/or social service delivery.
- Conduct independent research that demonstrates advanced knowledge of the methodology used, and which meets current publication standards.
- Engage in critical analysis of clinical practice models and their underpinning theories, including evidence of empirical support.
- Draw upon established social science theories to generate hypotheses regarding problems relevant to social work practice.
- Critically examine social policies using established models of analysis.
- Communicate effectively at a professional level, orally and in writing, the products of one’s scholarship to diverse constituencies.
- Compete successfully for academic positions in social work or related disciplines.
Transfer and Articulation Agreements
Academic standing and progress, withdrawals, redress of grievances, nyu policies.
Normally, credit for required courses in the PhD or DSW program cannot be transferred from other institutions. For admissions purposes, transfer credit from other educational programs within the school or from other institutions is generally not allowed.
A PhD student who is on academic probation is considered not to be in good academic standing or not to be in good academic progress. Students will be automatically placed on academic probation for any of the following reasons:
- A grade-point average of less than 3.0
- A grade of lower than B- in any course
- Failure to complete course requirements (as indicated by grade of IP or IF) within one semester following the end of the semester in which the course was taken.
- Inadequate performance in the research practicum (e.g., did not fulfill required weekly hours, did not turn in agreed-upon tasks on time).
Academic probation triggers the formation of a Status Committee, which serves to help the student identify obstacles to remaining in good academic standing and provides guidance and support for helping the student plan for improvement. Status committees consist of three faculty members: the student’s mentor, a member of the PhD program committee, and the director of the PhD program.
The program will provide written notification to the student of their probationary status as soon as practicable and within sixty (60) days after the final grades posted by the University (when applicable). The notification will inform the student of the ground for the determination, the specific steps that must be taken to return to good standing, the means by which the student’s performance will be evaluated and the penalty that will be imposed if these requirements are not met.
When the student is required to repeat the course(s) with grade lower than B- as stipulated by the recommendations from the faculty on the Status Committee, students will be responsible for the tuition and fees for such repeating course(s).
If the student is notified within the first two weeks of a semester, the student may be required to complete all requirements by the end of that semester. If notification occurs after the first two weeks of a semester have been completed, the student has until the end of the next full semester (including summer) to complete all requirements. If a student is awarded funding or financial aid (fellowship, assistantship, tuition, fees, health insurance, or other awards), then the probation letter will state the consequences of the probation on the financial aid award(s) including the terms required for the continuation or resumption of the award(s).
Students who do not improve their academic performance or progress sufficiently within one semester of being placed on academic probation will be dismissed from the program. The criteria for sufficient improvement regarding academic performance are as follows: a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, a grade of at least B- for any course, and no additional failures to complete course requirements (including the research practicum) in the probationary semester and thereafter. Students must be in good academic standing in order to progress from the coursework phase of the program to the qualifying exam and the dissertation. When academic probation is triggered in a student’s final semester of coursework, a status committee will determine the requirement(s) for returning to good academic standing. In addition, the criteria for sufficient improvement regarding academic progress are as follows: objective evidence showing substantial progress has been made in the probationary semester and thereafter (e.g., successfully completed QE, successfully defended proposal, successfully defended dissertation).
Students cannot be on academic probation more than once. Students on academic probation who do not satisfy the stated terms of probation may be formally terminated from the program. The Program is required to provide written notification to students of their termination as soon as practicable. The notification must inform students of the grounds for termination, including the specific steps that the student failed to take to meet the program requirements, the effective date of the termination, and the appeal process available to the student. When a student is put on probation or terminated, the program must notify all relevant offices, including but not limited to, the Office of Global Services if the student is international, and Graduate Enrollment Services if the student is receiving Silver or program funding.
Leaves of Absences/Term Withdrawal Overview
Most leaves and withdrawals are voluntary: psychological and/or physical medical leaves and personal leaves. Involuntary leaves and withdrawals are used in cases of academic/performance dismissal and as an option in cases of danger to self, others or property. Students are no longer allowed to request a leave of absence after the end of the add/drop period; they can instead request a term withdrawal up until the 9th week of classes (or 9th week equivalent in summer). A term withdrawal allows students to withdraw from their current semester courses, but in this case they will receive W (withdrawal) grades on their transcript. They will be held responsible for related tuition and fees according to the Bursar’s Refund Schedule . Students cannot take a leave of absence or term withdrawal after the 9th week of classes; they must receive a grade for all current semester courses. Term withdrawals after the 9th week of the term for extenuating circumstances must be initiated and approved by the program director. If a student is planning on any of the above, please refer to the Leave of Absence/Term Withdrawal Checklist .
Right to File a Grievance
Any student registered in Silver courses or otherwise formally involved in Silver programs has the right to file a grievance. Certain types of grievances must be adjudicated within Silver, while others must be adjudicated at the University level. The following rules are designed to provide Silver students with a mechanism of redress.
Grievances Adjudicated Outside Silver
In the following cases, grievances must be adjudicated outside Silver. Questions about whether or not grievances fall within these guidelines should be addressed to the Office of Student Conduct.
Harassment, Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct
If the matter involves alleged harassment, discrimination, or sexual misconduct in violation of either the University’s Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy and Complaint Procedures for Students or the University’s Sexual Misconduct, Relationship Violence, and Stalking Policy, grievances should be filed promptly with the Office of Equal Opportunity.
Grievance Arising in Other School or College
If the student’s grievance concerns a student, faculty or staff member whose primary affiliation is with another school or college, the student shall consult and follow that school or college’s procedures. In addition, the student shall submit copies of the written grievance to either of the OASA Assistant Deans and the comparable office in the other school or college.
Grievances Adjudicated by Silver
In the following cases, grievances can be adjudicated within Silver: the student believes that he or she has been subject to treatment which is in violation of a Silver rule, procedure or policy; the student believes that he or she is being affected by an unfair and/or incomplete Silver rule, procedure or policy or implementation of same.
Grievances Concerning Grades
A student may file a grievance concerning a grade on the basis of inequitable or prejudicial practices or administrative or clerical errors if he or she believes a grade to be incorrect. No other reason can form the basis for a grievance regarding a grade.
Grievances Concerning Academic Probation or Termination:
Students may not issue a grievance against an academic probation or termination or the terms therein. If a student believes that an academic probation or termination decision, or the terms thereof, is in violation of an NYU or Silver rule, the appeal process should be employed.
Student Status during Grievance
During the grievance process of an academic probation or termination, a student must be allowed to maintain student status and continue enrollment in any courses they were enrolled in at the date of the enactment of the probation or termination. The student’s academic record will be frozen for the duration of the appeals process. No grade changes will be accepted during this time. However, as provided in University Bylaw 80, the Dean of a school or the Dean’s representative may suspend a student pending consideration of a case. The Silver School of Social Work (Silver) urges that such action should only be taken to protect the physical or emotional safety and well-being of the student, the physical or emotional safety and well-being of other students, faculty, and/or University staff, the security of University property, the maintenance of public order or the effective continuation of the educational process. When such action does occur, the student shall be afforded the opportunity to expedite disciplinary proceedings. Any period of interim suspension shall be deducted from any final sanction involving suspension.
Initiation of the Complaint:
Complaint proceedings concerning events or conditions within Silver may be initiated in two ways:
- Informal Resolution: If the event or condition occurred within a program context, the student shall notify the Program Director within thirty (30) days of the occurrence of the event or occurrence being grieved. The Director shall investigate the complaint and respond to the student within fifteen days of notification. The student may be offered terms which, if accepted, will constitute a binding consensual agreement in resolution of the issue.
- Informal Resolution: If the event or condition occurred outside the program context but still within Silver, the student shall contact the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs within thirty (30) days of the occurrence of the event or occurrence being grieved. The Assistant Dean will arrange meetings within fifteen (15) days of notification as appropriate, attend such meeting(s), and attempt to aid in the resolution of the complaint. The student may be offered terms which, if accepted, will constitute a binding consensual agreement in resolution of the issue.
Formal Grievance
If the complaint is not resolved to the student’s satisfaction, and the complaint is one defined to be adjudicated by Silver, the student may bring a formal grievance to the PhD Program Committee within fifteen (15) days after the conclusion of the initiation of the complaint. In this case, the student must submit a formal written grievance to the Committee. The grievant shall state the grounds for the grievance, specifying program, Silver policy, rules, or procedures in question, describe the facts and evidence supporting the grievance, indicate what redress the grievant seeks, provide a brief history of the attempts to resolve the grievance, and identify any individuals who can be contacted for relevant information. Students may request a restriction of the investigation or attempted resolution of a grievance based on concerns about privacy or conflict of interest. The PhD Program Committee will determine which faculty member on the Committee will oversee the grievance and will notify the student of their decision.
Receipt of Formal Grievance
Upon receipt of a formal grievance, the PhD Program Committee faculty overseeing the grievance will promptly schedule a meeting with the grievant. One person may accompany and advise the grievant, but cannot directly participate in the meeting. The PhD Program Committee or the student may request the presence of the other OASA Assistant Dean. The student or the PhD Program Committee may request that the meeting be recorded. The PhD Program Committee may contact such other persons as the Assistant Dean deems appropriate, subject to the restrictions of the grievant, for the purpose of ascertaining the facts and evidence in the case. The PhD Program Committee shall render a written decision on the grievance to the grievant, the respondent, and, if the matter had previously been addressed in the program, to the program.
Appeal of PhD Program Committee’s Decision
The student may appeal in writing the decision of the PhD Program Committee to the Dean of Silver within two weeks of receipt of the PhD Program Committee’s decision. The Dean will review only the process resulting in the PhD Program Committee’s finding to determine if it was fair and impartial and followed the rules and policies of the Graduate School. No new information beyond what was reported to the PhD Program Committee will be considered. The Dean will render a written decision to the student within thirty days of receipt of the appeal. The Dean’s decision shall be final for Silver and its program.
Appeal of Dean’s Decision
Students wishing to appeal the Dean’s decision should consult the University’s Student Grievance Procedure. GSAS procedures cover Phases I and II of the University’s procedures, so any appeal would start with Phase III, the University Judicial Board.
Record Keeping
The Office of the Dean shall retain a copy of any grievance formally submitted to the PhD Program Committee or to the Dean, any amended grievance, and any decision of the PhD Program Committee and/or Dean for five (5) calendar years following the date on which the grievance is resolved.

A Jewish Yale student journalist reporting on an anti-Israeli protest at the Ivy League university Saturday night was stabbed in the eye with a Palestinian flag – with her assailant going unpunished.
Sahar Tartak, the editor-in-chief of the Yale Free Press, was covering the protest – which saw hundreds of students camping at the campus in support of Palestinians – when she was suddenly surrounded by demonstrators.
Tartak said she and a friend were signaled out for wearing Hasidic Jewish attire as the crowd formed a blockade around them to interfere with their filming.
“There’s hundreds of people taunting me and waving the middle finger at me, and then this person waves a Palestinian flag in my face and jabs it in my eye,” Tartak told The Post.
“When I tried to yell and go after him, the protesters got in a line and stopped me,” she added.
Tartak, who was shopping for an eyepatch when speaking with The Post, said she tried to report the assault to campus police, but they told her there was nothing they could do.
Instead, she just got an ambulance ride to the hospital to get her eye checked out.
Tartak also slammed the university for not cracking down on Saturday’s protest, the latest incident at Yale, where demonstrators have blocked entrances to school buildings as they condemn the war in the Gaza Strip.
Stop Antisemitism, a nonprofit watchdog group, has shared an image Tartak took of the demonstrator who jabbed her in the eye, asking the public to help identify him.
Yale did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
Noah Rubin, a University of Pennsylvania student helping document the protest at Yale, also bashed the university for going against its own policies by allowing the demonstrations to continue.
According to the school’s guidelines, protesters are barred from blocking access to building entrances and are considered trespassers if they refuse to leave once instructed.
“The university is not acting on its own rules and it’s only emboldening these protesters,” Rubin said.
Along with Saturday’s violence, students are also holding a hunger strike on campus to push Yale to divest from weapons manufacturers affiliated with Israel, a strike that has been going on for more than six days.
The hunger strike saw drag performer Tifa Wine join students on Friday as she slammed the university for its alleged support of Israel — but failing to mention Hamas’ record as an Islamic fundamentalist organization that opposes rights for LGBTQ people..
The movement in Yale has grown in solidarity with a similar protest at Columbia University in New York City .

Trump's hush money trial begins Monday. Here's what to expect.
Donald Trump will become the first former president to stand trial in a criminal case next week — and he'll do so against the backdrop of a presidential campaign in which he's the presumptive Republican nominee.
Jury selection begins Monday in New York City, and the trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
Here's a look at what you need to know and what's expected to happen.
How long is jury selection expected to last?
Jury selection is expected to last one to two weeks. Starting Monday, prosecutors and lawyers for Trump will seek to whittle a pool of potentially hundreds of people to 12 jurors and six alternates. Each juror will answer 42 questions designed to discern whether they can be impartial about the polarizing former president. Questions include inquiries about what news sources they follow and whether they've ever attended any Trump rallies or protests. The jurors will be anonymous, meaning their identities will be withheld from the public because of security concerns.
A criminal trial involving Trump's company before the same judge in 2022 took a week to select 12 jurors and five alternates.
What is Trump charged with?
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business records, a low-level felony. Trump faces a maximum of four years behind bars if he’s convicted.
What is the prosecution alleging?
Prosecutors allege Trump “repeatedly and fraudulently falsified New York business records to conceal criminal conduct that hid damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.”
At the heart of the case are allegations of various sex scandals that prosecutors say Trump tried to suppress with the help of his lawyer Michael Cohen and top executives in charge of the National Enquirer. In the final days of the election, Cohen paid $130,000 to one of the women, adult film star Stormy Daniels, to keep silent about her claim she'd had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Trump has denied the allegation.
After he was elected, Trump reimbursed Cohen through a series of checks from his trust that were processed through the Trump Organization and labeled as payments "for legal services rendered" — a claim the DA says was false.
What is Trump’s defense?
Trump has maintained he didn’t do anything wrong, and while he has acknowledged reimbursing Cohen, he has said he didn’t know details about what Cohen was doing.
His lawyers are likely to target Cohen on the witness stand by painting him as a liar who loathes the former president and whose testimony shouldn’t be believed. They’re likely to be aggressive with Daniels, as well, and they’re expected to focus on comments she has made mocking Trump in an effort to portray her as biased and untrustworthy.
Who will testify for the prosecution?
Cohen, who says Trump directed him to make the payment to Daniels, is expected to be a key witness, as is Daniels. Trump's attorneys sought to bar both from testifying, but Judge Juan Merchan gave both the green light to take the stand. Daniels' former attorney Keith Davidson is likely to testify about his negotiations over the payment, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said.
Also expected to testify is Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with Trump, a claim he denies. She received money from the Enquirer to keep quiet about her allegations in what prosecutors said was part of a "catch and kill" scheme designed to keep a lid on potential Trump scandals.
David Pecker, a Trump ally who was the CEO of Enquirer publisher AMI at the time, is also expected to be called, the source said. Dylan Howard, another former AMI executive involved in the discussions with Trump and Cohen, may also testify.
Former White House communications director Hope Hicks — who prosecutors have said was involved in phone calls among Trump, Cohen and AMI — and former Trump assistant Madeleine Westerhout are also likely to take the stand, the source said.
Jurors are also expected to hear from Jeffrey McConney, the former controller for the Trump Organization, and Deborah Tarasoff, a former accounts payable supervisor at the company, the source said.
Who will testify in Trump's defense?
Court filings show Trump plans to call Bradley A. Smith, a former Federal Election Commission chair who will testify about the FEC and its function, laws it's responsible for enforcing and definitions and terms that relate to the case. The judge ruled he won’t be allowed to offer his opinion about whether Trump's actions violated election law, as Trump had hoped he would.
Trump, who is the only person who can directly rebut some of Cohen's claims, said Friday that he would "absolutely" testify in the trial. He is not required to take the stand.
Will Trump have to be in court every day?
Unlike the New York civil fraud and E. Jean Carroll defamation trials, the DA's case is criminal, so Trump is required to be in court every day to participate in his defense. The trial is off on Wednesdays, but Trump will have to be in court for the four other days of the court week. The trial days are expected to last from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Trump has suggested he might do campaign events at night after having attended court during the day.
How many jurors' votes are needed for a conviction or an acquittal?
To reach a verdict, all 12 jurors must agree on whether Trump is guilty or not guilty of a specific charge.

Once they are chosen, jurors will be asked to decide whether Donald J. Trump falsified business records to cover up a sex scandal. But first they must answer these questions.

Jury selection is often a lengthy process, but in the first criminal trial of a former American president , currently taking place in a Manhattan criminal courthouse, it’s going more slowly than normal.
In part, that is because of the nature of the case: Jurors, once seated, will be asked to decide whether Donald J. Trump committed a crime. Prosecutors have charged him with 34 felonies, accusing him of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal that could have hurt his first presidential run.
But the process has been particularly drawn-out because, once would-be jurors say they can be fair and impartial, they are being asked a series of 42 questions . After that, they face additional scrutiny from lawyers for the prosecution and the defense.
Here are the 42 questions:
1. Without telling us your address, in what neighborhood do you live? For example, Upper East Side, Lower East Side, Inwood, etc. How long have you lived there? Are you a native New Yorker? If not, where did you live previously?
2. What do you do for a living? How long have you been doing that? If you are retired, please tell us what you did before you retired.

9. Have you ever served on a jury before? If you did, please tell us how long ago that was and whether that was in Criminal Court, Civil Court or Grand Jury. Without telling us the verdict, please tell us whether the jury reached a verdict.
10. Which of the following print publications, cable and/or network programs, or online media such as websites, blogs, or social media platforms do you visit, read, or watch? (The New York Times, USA Today, New York Daily News, Huffington Post, CNN, MSNBC, Google, Facebook, X, TikTok, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, Newsday, The Washington Post, Fox News, Newsmax, MSN, Yahoo, Truth Social).

23. Without telling us the name(s), do you take any medication that would prevent you from being able to concentrate or pay attention during the proceedings or during the deliberations?
