The Laboratory is headquartered at Adelphi, MD with two elements located at White Sands Missile Range, NM.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory Computational and Information Sciences Directorate (CISD) plays a key role in information sciences and technology research within the Army and the Department of Defense (DoD).  With a research mission focused on battlefield communications and networks, data fusion and knowledge management, battlespace weather and environmental effects, and computational science and engineering, CISD is poised to provide the Army with the necessary advances in information technology to transition to the Army Objective Force.

On the future battlefield, the soldier will face an array of threats from the conventional, electronic, and electromagnetic to the nuclear, biological, chemical, and environmental.  The Survivability & Lethality Analysis Directorate (SLAD) develops and conducts vulnerability and lethality assessments of Army technologies and systems and provides recommendations and technical expertise to reduce or eliminate vulnerabilities and to improve effectiveness.

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory is the Army’s corporate research laboratory.

The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is one of eight science and technology domains within the command, which discovers, innovates and transitions science and technology to ensure dominant strategic land power.

The laboratory’s mission is to provide innovative science, technology and analysis to enable full-spectrum operations. The Army relies on the team for scientific discoveries, technological advances and analyses to provide Soldiers with capabilities to succeed on the battlefield.

Its diverse assortment of unique facilities and dedicated workforce of government and private sector partners make up the largest source of world-class integrated research and analysis in the Army.

By combining its in-house technical expertise with those from academic and industry partners, the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is able to maximize each dollar invested to provide the best technologies for our Soldiers.

The laboratory’s program consists of basic and applied research and survivability/lethality and human factors analysis. It also applies the extensive research and analysis tools developed in its direct mission program to support ongoing development and acquisition programs in DEVCOM, Program Executive Offices/Program Manager Offices, and industry.

The DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory has consistently provided the enabling technologies in many of the Army’s most important weapons systems.

The EBRC (Energetics Basic Research Center) is a basic research program initiated by the Combat Capabilities Development Command/Army Research Laboratory/ARO. The future Army is projected to be unable to achieve dominance in range and lethality due to inadequate energetic formulations and form factor limitations associated with current weapon systems. Basic research generates new knowledge that may be exploited to develop and deliver new materials and technologies that contribute to enhanced lethal effects at the system level as well as increased range and a smaller payload. These, in turn, enable space for larger, mission-critical systems, and shorter time-to-target ensuring Army battlefield dominance in Multi-Domain Operations. Army research must encompass new ways to expedite the discovery, design, and scale-up of new materials and concepts which when integrated into newly designed weapons components (e.g. additively manufactured high strength steels with pre-formed fragmentation patterns, and structural reactive materials) developed at ARL and across the Army and DoD communities, will deliver decisive weapons overmatch.

ARL’s Army Research Office, founded in 1951 as the Army Research Office and based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., has more than 100 scientists, engineers and support staff, who manage the Army’s extramural research program.

We drive cutting-edge and disruptive scientific discoveries that will enable crucial future Army technologies and capabilities through high-risk, high pay-off research opportunities.

Our program managers competitively select and fund basic research proposals from educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and private industry to increase fundamental knowledge and understanding across key scientific disciplines related to long-term national security needs in support of ARL’s 11 Foundational Research Competencies.

The research we fund is conducted at 250 universities across the country and around the world with more than 1,100 individual researchers.

The results of these research efforts are transitioned to the Army research and development community, industry, or academia for future technological superiority of our Soldiers, Army and nation. Our research represents the most long-range Army view, with system applications often 20-30 years away.

ARO also manages the Small Business Technology Transfer Program and Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minorities Serving Institutions Programs.

Army cybersecurity researcher receives Young Investigator Award

U.S. Army scientist Dr. Charles Kamhoua is the latest recipient of the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award.

ADELPHI, Md. -- U.S. Army scientist Dr. Charles Kamhoua is the latest recipient of the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award for his leadership and contributions to game theory applied to cybersecurity.

Sigma Xi, an honor society for scientific research, established the Young Investigator Award to recognize individuals within 10 years of earning their highest graduate degree for their scientific achievements, interdisciplinary research, and the ability to communicate the significance of their achievements to the public.

Kamhoua, a researcher at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory , is a game theorist and senior electronics engineer with extensive research expertise in network security and resilience. He has co-authored more than 200 technical papers, five of which received best paper awards. Kamhoua has co-edited four books related to network security, entitled “ Assured Cloud Computing ,” “ Blockchain for Distributed System Security ,” “ Modeling and Design of Secure Internet of Things ” and “ Game Theory and Machine Learning for Cyber Security .”

An inventor with nine U.S. patents awarded or pending, Kamhoua has two patents licensed to mitigate hardware trojan-induced data leakage, which address a well-known national problem of supply chain security, as the U.S. often relies on computer hardware manufactured internationally.

“Dr. Kamhoua’s research record is truly outstanding, with patents and publications in conferences, journals, and magazines,” said Dr. Nandi Leslie , an engineering fellow at Ratheon, who nominated him for the Young Investigator Award. “In addition to his phenomenal independent work, he collaborates and creates new partnerships for the lab with academia and industry to meet Army modernization objectives and close challenging research gaps.”

Kamhoua has been focused on challenging cybersecurity issues in defense, first at the Air Force Research Laboratory, and now at the Army’s corporate research lab.

“The Department of Defense is addressing several cybersecurity problems that are challenging, interesting and applicable in the battlefield as well as the commercial sector,” Kamhoua said. “As researchers in defense, we have unique opportunities to collaborate with other researchers in government laboratories, industry and academia, both nationally and internationally.”

Kamhoua leads the proactive action research group at the lab’s network security branch, a team that focuses on cyber deception, cyber resilience, and cyber agility or moving target defense. He has published journal papers and conference proceedings on topics including vehicular network security, cyber-physical system security, cyber threat information-sharing, using game theory and other computational modeling techniques.

“Dr. Kamhoua’s research ideas are truly novel and original and showcase his intellectual capacity to make an impact on new areas and create needed solutions to important problems,” Leslie said. “His work provides deep theoretical insights, new algorithms, and sound empirical evidence for using game theory to enhance network security and resilience beyond the current state-of-the-art.”

U.S. Army scientist Dr. Charles Kamhoua is the latest recipient of the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award.

Kamhoua has been a visiting researcher at institutions such as Harvard University and the University of Oxford. The White House, the U.S. Congress and the Pentagon have congratulated him for his research contributions recognized in numerous awards, including the 2019 U.S. Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal, the 2019 Federal 100-FCW annual awards for individuals that have had an exceptional impact on federal IT, the 2019 IEEE ComSoc Technical Committee on Big Data (TCBD) Best Journal Paper Award, the 2018 ARL Achievement Award for leadership and outstanding contribution to the ARL Cyber Camo (cyber deception) project, the 2018 Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellowship, the 2017 AFRL Information Directorate Basic Research Award “For Outstanding Achievements in Basic Research,” the 2017 Fred I. Diamond Award for the best paper published at AFRL’s Information Directorate, the 2016 FIU Charles E. Perry Young Alumni Visionary Award, the 2015 Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA), the 2015 NSBE Golden Torch Award—Pioneer of the Year, and selection to the 2015 Heidelberg Laureate Forum.

Power & energy.

Finding ways to generate, store, distribute, and secure on-demand power is paramount for the Army — from individual Soldiers to ground vehicles and aircraft. Yet finding solutions that deliver flexible power and energy remains an operational challenge. The good news is that technologies cropping up in this area across the market could have a major impact, as could the companies that develop them. We're on the hunt for those game-changing solutions that can meet military demands and are ready to be applied across our force.

Contested Logistics

Logistical blockages show up in a variety of ways, but they all create problems for the Army. From radio jamming and cyberattacks to drones and supply chain disruptions, contested environments put people in harm's way — and make it difficult for Soldiers to accomplish their missions. So we are looking for solutions like manufacturing at point of need or predictive logistics that can ease the movement of personnel, supplies, and equipment across the United States, abroad, or in transit from one location to another.

Human Performance

People are our greatest resource. That's why the Army is making investments in technologies to optimize Soldiers as individuals, not just their strength. We must safeguard their physical, mental, and emotional health by adopting human-centric tools that can help aid and protect them. We aren't in it for profit. We're looking for solutions that provide ROI in the form of enhanced Soldier performance. If there's a solution that meets that need, we want to know about it.

Robotics & AI

Applied AI and advancements in robotics have made life easier for most of society. For the Army, those same technologies can improve mission outcomes, keep Soldiers safe, and increase our operational capability. The right solutions can reduce the physical and cognitive load on Soldiers, and they can give leaders better information, faster, to inform strategies and tactical decisions. Whether building an autonomous platform or using AI to improve operations, we are leaning into advanced engineering tools that offer new ways to perform our most important tasks.
