Note: Make sure you are logged into your Moodle course and have navigated to the assignment before beginning these instructions. If you need help logging into your Moodle course, please see our article on How to Log Into Moodle .

  • Open a word-processing program such as Word, type your assignment as your professor instructed, and save it to your computer.

Note: If you are submitting the assignment late the " Add submission " button may not appear as some instructors do not accept late assignments. If this is the case contact your instructor to discuss next steps.

Moodle lets instructors create Assignments with a variety of settings. For example:

  • Your instructor can control whether you can make only one submission or whether you can you can re-submit files, or if you can upload files after deadlines have passed.
  • Some assignment types let your instructor return a submission with comments for revisions. You can upload your revisions by returning to the link for the assignment.
  • Assignments can be for "offline" activities such as a classroom presentation or printed paper, in which case you will not submit anything on Moodle, but your instructor may use the Moodle assignment for grading and feedback.

Submit an Assignment

You may be asked to attach files or enter text directly into a text box. Note : If your instructor asks you to upload a file, they should inform you what file format you should submit (e.g., .pdf, .doc, .pptx or .docx).

  • Links to assignments can always be found in the sections down the center of the Moodle course page. If your instructor has added the Activities block to the course, you can also locate assignments by selecting the Assignment link in the Activities block, which can usually be found on the right side of the Moodle course  page.
  • Select the link to the assignment. The Assignment page  will open, showing instructions and your submission status (due date, grading status, time remaining, grade, etc.) for this assignment.
  • Select  Add submission . The Assignment submission  page will open. Depending on how your instructor set up the assignment, you may have the option to submit file(s), enter text in a text entry box or both.
  • When pasting text into Moodle, for best results, paste the content as unformatted text.
  • For spell checking to work, it must be enabled in your browser. Once enabled, to see spelling suggestions press and hold the  Control key on your keyboard and click OR right-click on your mouse (whether you are using a Mac or PC system will determine which operation will work).
  • Arrange your computer desktop windows so that you can view both your browser window and the files on your computer (e.g., in an open folder or on your desktop).

Screenshot of Assignment submission page and an arrow indicating dragging and releasing a .doc file from a browser window.

  • To upload a file from your computer, click Upload a file (at left), then below  Attachment,  select Choose file . Browse your computer and select a file, then click Open. The file name will appear next to the Choose file  button.
  • To upload a file from Google Drive , see Upload Files from Your Google Drive to Moodle .
  • (Optional) If you want to rename your file in the File Picker, enter the new name in the Save as field.
  • Click Upload this file . The File Picker will close and an icon for your uploaded file will appear in the Files area .
  • Once your file(s) appear(s) in the Files submission area, click  Save changes . Note: You should receive an email at your umass.edu mail address confirming you have submitted the assignment.
  • If your instructor allows you to revise your submission, you'll see an Edit submission button on the Assignment page . Select  Edit submission to add or replace files, or edit a text submission. When you finish making changes, click  Save changes.
  • For some assignment types, you will see a Submit assignment button. To finalize your submission, click Submit assignment , then Continue. Note : Once finalized, you will not be able to make any more changes.
  • You can check under Submission status on the Assignment page to ensure your file is listed. You can also view feedback and grades from your instructor there.
  • For some assignment types, you may have the option to submit multiple attempts (or drafts) for a single assignment. Because each course is different, you will need to communicate with your instructors on how submission attempts and feedback are configured for each Moodle assignment.

You can upload all common file types to your Moodle course site, including HTML files, Word Documents, PowerPoints and PDFs. For example, instructors can use Moodle to distribute their syllabus, course readings and lecture slides to students.

There are a couple of ways you can upload files to Moodle. The simplest one is to drag and drop files from your desktop straight into Moodle.

1. First you must turn editing on by sliding the top right slider:

moodle upload homework

2. Drag your file from your desktop straight into Moodle until you see + Add file(s) here option appear and drop your file into it. (Note: If you upload an image, a pop-up will open asking you what you want to do with the file. You can then decide whether you want to ‘add the image to the course page’ or if you want to ‘create a file resource.’ Once you’ve selected one of the two, hit upload.)

Another way to include files is to go through + Add an activity or resource feature. Go to the topic or week you wish to add a file to and then choose a file in the Add an activity or resource link.

3. In the new window, choose File from the list of "resources" then click on the Add button.

activity

4. Next give a name to your file.

5. Then scroll down to the Content section and upload your file by clicking on +Add or you can drag and drop your file into the field below.

6. Once you have either dragged and dropped or added a file to the content section, you will see it displayed on the Select files window.

7. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save and return to course.

NOTE: In the Appearance section, you can choose how the student will view the file on their Moodle site.

Documentation

Note: You are currently viewing documentation for Moodle 2.2. Up-to-date documentation for the latest stable version is available here: Assignment module .

Assignment module

  • Managing activities
  • External tool

The assignment module allows teachers to collect work from students, review it and provide feedback including grades. The work a student submits is visible only to the teacher and not to other students.

Assignmentexample.png

  • Assignment settings
  • Using Assignment
  • Assignment FAQ

Students can submit any digital content (files), including, for example, word-processed documents, spreadsheets, images, audio and video clips. Assignments don't necessarily have to consist of file uploads. Alternatively, teachers can ask students to type directly into Moodle using an online text assignment. There is also an offline activity assignment which can be used to remind students of 'real-world' assignments they need to complete and to record grades in Moodle for activities that don't have an online component.

Assignment types

There are 4 types of assignments:

  • Workshop module allows peer to peer evaluations
  • Using Moodle single file upload vs. advanced uploading forum discussion
  • Activity modules

After tapping on "My Files", look to the bottom right of your screen for a button with a + on it. This button is for adding a file to your Moodle account.

Once you tap the plus button, a menu pops up asking how you would like to upload:

  • Photo Albums - Upload an existing photo you have already taken.

For this example, we will upload an existing picture we have already taken with the 'Photo Albums' option. Be sure to allow access to your Photos so Moodle can upload the image.

The upload is complete when you recieve a message saying "The file was successfully uploaded".

You should now see your uploaded file in 'My files'. Here, mine is called "cdv_photo_001.jpg".

Record and Upload Audio through the Moodle App

To upload and record audio, reference and select the third option in the list above, labeled " Audio ". On iPhone and iPad, this will open a microphone seen in the image to the right automatically. On an Android device, you will need to download an audio recording app before attempting to use the Audio option.

In order to record, the App needs permission to use your Microphone. Press " Allow " if it asks to use the Microphone.

Once you have stopped recording, press the blue " Done " button in the upper right corner. If this button is not blue, the recording is still going. Stop the recording, and press "Done" to continue.

Adding Audio or Video to a weekly Module

Unlike photos or documents which can be uploaded as a "File" into your course, audio and video files require a special loading process. Follow these steps to add Audio or Video into your course:

  • Enter your course, turn editing on, and determine where you would like to add the material. For this example, we will add it to one of our weekly modules. In the weekly module, press "Add an activity or resource", and then select "Label" from the resources list.

  • Tab on the 'Toolbar Toggle' button to expand our menu options. Once the toolbar has been expanded, locate the "Insert/edit embedded media" button and click on it.

  • Clicking on the button will pop up an additional menu to determine the type of media you want to use. Click on the "Type" dropdown arrow at the top, and select either 'HTML5 video' or 'HTML5 audio', depending on if you would like to use video, or audio. For this example, we will use HTML5 video.

moodle upload homework

  • Next, in the same pop up window, click on the 'Browse' button located at the end of the "Files/URL" button. This will open the same file picker we used earlier! Simply click on 'Private files' in the left hand side, and we will select a video since we are using the HTML5 video type.
  • Now looking at your private files, click on the video file you want to use, then click the blue "Select this file" button in the next window. Once this has been done, you should return back to the small pop up window. You should notice in the 'File/URL' field, it now ends with "draftfile.php" - This is correct, and we're almost there!

  • Finally, click on the 'Advanced' tab at the top. Locate the 'Preload' setting toward the bottom, and switch it to "Preload video metadata". Next, check the box that says 'Controls'. These two settings allow the browser to begin loading the video ahead of time, and provide the students controls to work the video. Once these are all set, press the green 'Insert' button at the bottom to complete the video process.
  • After pressing 'Insert', add any additional text around the new yellow box in the text editor, which is your video placeholder. Once finished, press "Save and return to the course" at the bottom to finalize the text and video. You should now see the video live in your course. Press play and you are all done!
