Type 1: Reactive machines – These machines can react to situations. A famous example can be Deep Blue, the IBM chess program. Most noteworthy, the chess program won against Garry Kasparov , the popular chess legend. Furthermore, such machines lack memory. These machines certainly cannot use past experiences to inform future ones. It analyses all possible alternatives and chooses the best one.

Type 2: Limited memory – These AI systems are capable of using past experiences to inform future ones. A good example can be self-driving cars. Such cars have decision making systems . Type 3: Theory of mind – This refers to understand others. Above all, this means to understand that others have their beliefs, intentions, desires, and opinions. However, this type of AI does not exist yet.

Type 4: Self-awareness – This is the highest and most sophisticated level of Artificial Intelligence. Such systems have a sense of self. Furthermore, they have awareness, consciousness, and emotions. Senior Researcher Chris Dede isn't overly worried about growing concerns over generative artificial intelligence, like ChatGPT, in education. As a longtime researcher on emerging technologies, he's seen many decades where new technologies promised to upend the field. Instead, Dede says artificial intelligence requires educators to get smarter about how they teach in order to truly take advantage of what AI has to offer.“The trick about AI is that to get it, we need to change what we're educating people for because if you educate people for what AI does well, you're just preparing them to lose to AI. But if you educate them for what AI can't do, then you've got IA [Intelligence Augmentation],” he says. Dede, the associate director of research for the National AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education , says AI raises the bar and it has the power to significantly impact learning in powerful ways.

In this episode of the Harvard EdCast, Dede talks about how the field of education needs to evolve and get smarter, in order to work with — not against — artificial intelligence.

Jill Anderson:  I'm Jill Anderson. This is the Harvard EdCast. 

Chris Dede thinks we need to get smarter about using artificial intelligence and education. He has spent decades exploring emerging learning technologies as a Harvard researcher. The recent explosion of generative AI, like ChatGPT, has been met with mixed reactions in education. Some public school districts have banned it. Some colleges and universities have tweaked their teaching and learning already.

Chris Dede: I've actually been working with AI for more than half a century. Way back when when I was a graduate student, I read the first article on AI in education, which was published in 1970. And the author confidently predicted that we wouldn't need teachers within five or six years because AI was going to do everything. And of course, we still see predictions like that today. 

But having lived through nine hype cycles for AI, I'm both impressed by how much it's advanced, but I'm also wary about elaborate claims for it. And there is a lot of excitement now about generative AI is the term that people are using, which includes programs like ChatGPT. It includes things like Dolly that are capable of creating images. It includes really AI on its own doing performances that we previously would have thought were something that people would have to do. 

But it's interesting to compare ChatGPT to a search engine. And people don't remember this, but there was a time when-- before search engines when people really struggled to find resources, and there was enormous excitement when search engines came out. And search engines are, in fact, AI. They are based on AI at the back end, coming up with lists of things that hopefully match what you typed in. In fact, the problem with the search engine becomes not trying to find anything, but trying to filter everything to decide what's really useful. 

So you can think of ChatGPT as the next step beyond a search engine where instead of getting a list of things and then you decide which might be useful and you examine them, you get an answer that says, this is what I think you want. And that is really more the AI taking charge than it is the AI saying, I can help you. Here's some things that you might look at and decide about. That makes me wary because AI is not at a stage where it really understands what it's saying. 

And so it will make up things when it doesn't know them, kind of a not very good student seeing if they can fake out the teacher. And it will provide answers that are not customized to somebody's culture or to somebody's reading level or to somebody's other characteristics. So it's really quite limited. 

I know that Harvard has sent some wording out that I've now put into my syllabi about students being welcome to use whatever tools they want. But when they present something as their work, it has to be something that they wrote themselves. It can't be something that somebody else wrote, which is classic plagiarism. It can't be something that Chat AI wrote that they're presenting as their work and so on. I think that what Chat AI does is it raises the bar for human performance. 

I know a lot about what people are going through now in terms of job interviews because my older daughter is an HR manager, and my younger daughter just graduated. And she's having a lot of job interviews. And in contrast to earlier times, now, job interviews typically involve a performance. 

If you're going to be hired for a marketing position, they'll say bring in a marketing plan when we do our face-to-face interview on this, and we'll evaluate it. Or in her case, in mechanical engineering, they say when you come in, there's this system that you're going to have a chance to debug, and we'll see how well you do it. Those employers are going to type the same thing into Chat AI. And if someone comes in with something that isn't any better than Chat AI, they're not going to get hired because why hire somebody that can't outcompete a free resource? 

Jill Anderson:  Oh interesting. 

Chris Dede: So it raises the bar for human performance in an interesting way. 

Jill Anderson:  Your research looks at something called intelligence augmentation. I want to know what that means and how that's different from artificial intelligence. 

Chris Dede: Intelligence augmentation is really about the opposite of this sort of negative example I was describing where now you've got to outthink Chat AI if you want to get a job. It says, when is the whole more than the sum of the parts? When do a person and AI working together do things that neither one could do as well on their own? 

And often, people think, well, yeah, I can see a computer programmer, there might be intelligence augmentation because I know that machines can start to do programming. What they don't realize is that it applies to a wide range of jobs, including mine, as a college professor. So I am the associate director for research in a national AI institute funded by the National Science Foundation on adult learning and online education. And one of the things the Institute is building is AI assistants for college faculty. 

So there's question answering assistants to help with student questions, and there's tutoring assistants and library assistants and laboratory assistants. There's even a social assistant that can help students in a large class meet other students who might be good learning partners. So now, as a professor, I'm potentially surrounded by all these assistants who are doing parts of my job, and I can be deskilled by that, which is a bad future. You sort of end up working for the assistant where they say, well, here's a question I can't answer. 

So you have to do it. Or you can upskill because the assistant is taking over routine parts of the job. And in turn, you can focus much more deeply on personalization to individual students, on bringing in cultural dimensions and equity dimensions that AI does not understand and cannot possibly help with. The trick about AI is that to get it, we need to change what we're educating people for because if you educate people for what AI does well, you're just preparing them to lose to AI. But if you educate them for what AI can't do, then you've got IA. 

Jill Anderson:  So that's the goal here. We have to change the way that we're educating young people, even older people at this point. I mean, everybody needs to change the way that they're learning about these things and interacting with them. 

Chris Dede: They do. And we're hampered by our system of assessment because the assessments that we use, including Harvard with the GRE and the SAT and so on, those are what AI does well. AI can score really well on psychometric tests. So we're using the wrong measure, if you will. We need to use performance assessments to measure what people can do to get into places like Harvard or higher education in general because that's emphasizing the skills that are going to be really useful for them. 

Jill Anderson:  You mentioned at the start artificial intelligence isn't really something brand new. This has been around for decades, but we're so slow to adapt and prepare and alter the way that we do things that once it reaches kind of the masses, we're already behind. 

Chris Dede:  Well, we are. And the other part of it is that we keep putting old wine in new bottles. I mean, this is — if I had to write a headline for the entire history of educational technology, it would be old wine in new bottles. But we don't understand what the new bottle really means. 

So let me give you an example of something that I think generative AI could make a big difference, be very powerful, but I'm not seeing it discussed in all the hype about generative AI. And that is evidence-based modeling for local decisions. So let's take climate change. 

One of the problems with climate change is that let's say that you're in Des Moines, Iowa, and you read about all this flooding in California. And you say to yourself, well, I'm not next to an ocean. I don't live in California. And I don't see why I should be that worried about this stuff. 

Now, no one has done a study, I assume, of flooding in Des Moines, Iowa, in 2050 based on mid-level projections about climate change. But with generative AI, we can estimate that now. 

Generative AI can reach out across topographic databases, meteorological databases, and other related databases to come up with here's the parts of Des Moines that are going to go underwater in 2050 and here's how often this is going to happen if these models are correct. That really changes the dialogue about climate change because now you're talking about wait a minute.  You mean that park I take my kids to is going to have a foot of water in it? So I think that kind of evidence-based modeling is not something that people are doing with generative AI right now, but it's perfectly feasible. And that's the new wine that we can put in the new bottle. 

Jill Anderson:  That's really a great way to use that. I mean, and you could even use that in your classroom. Something that you said a long, long time ago was that — and this is paraphrasing — the idea that we often implement new technology, and we make this mistake of focusing on students first rather than teachers.   Chris Dede:  In December, I gave a keynote at a conference called Empowering Learners for the Age of AU that has been held the last few years. And one of the things I talked about was the shift from teaching to learning. Both are important, but teaching is ultimately sort of pouring knowledge into the minds of learners. And learning is much more open ended, and it's essential for the future because every time you need to learn something new, you can't afford to go back and have another master's degree. You need to be able to do self-directed learning. 

And where AI can be helpful with this is that AI can be like an intellectual partner, even when you don't have a teacher that can help you learn in different ways. One of the things that I've been working on with a professor at the Harvard Business School is AI systems that can help you learn negotiation. 

Now, the AI can't be the person you're negotiating with. AI is not good at playing human beings — not yet and not for quite a long time, I think. But what AI can do is to create a situation where a human being can play three people at once. So here you are. You're learning how to negotiate a raise. 

You go into a virtual conference room. There's three virtual people who are three bosses. There's one simulation specialist behind all three, and you negotiate with them. And then at the end, the system gives you some advice on what you did well and not so well. 

And if you have a human mentor, that person gives you advice as well. Ronda Bandy, who was a professor in HGSE until she moved to Hunter College, she and I have published five articles on the work we did for the HGSE's Reach Every Reader Project on using this kind of digital puppeteering to help teachers practice equitable discussion leading. So again, here's something that people aren't talking about where AI on the front end can create rich evocative situations, and AI and machine learning on the back end can find really interesting patterns for improvement. 

Jill Anderson:  You know, Chris, how hard is it to get there for educators? 

Chris Dede: I think, in part, that's what these national AI institutes are about. Our institute, which is really adult learning with a workplace focus, is looking at that part of the spectrum. There's another institute whose focus is middle school and high school and developing AI partners for students where the student and the partner are learning together in a different kind of IA. There's a third Institute that's looking at narrative and storytelling as a powerful form of education and how can AI help with narrative and storytelling. 

You can imagine sitting down. Mom and dad aren't around. You've got a storybook like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and you've got something like Alexa that can listen to what you're reading and respond. 

And so you begin, and you say, Goldilocks went out of her house one day and went into the woods and got lost. And Alexa says, why do you think Goldilocks went into the woods? Was she a naughty girl? No. Or was she an adventurous girl, or was she deeply concerned about climate change and wanting to study ecosystems? 

I mean, I'm being playful about this, but I think the point is that AI doesn't understand any of the questions that it's asking but it can ask the questions, and then the child can start to think deeper than just regurgitating the story. So there's all sorts of possibilities here that we just have to think of as new wine instead of asking how can AI automate our order thinking about teaching and learning. 

Jill Anderson:  I've been hearing a lot of concern about writing in particular-- writing papers where young people are actually expressing their own ideas, concerns about plagiarism and cheating, which I would say the latter have long existed as challenges in education, aren't really a new one. Does AI really change this? And how might a higher ed or any educator really look at this differently? 

Chris Dede:  So I think where AI changes this is it helps us understand the kind of writing that we should be teaching versus the kind of writing that we are teaching. So I remember preparing my children for the SAT, and it used to have something called the essay section. And you had to write this very formal essay that was a certain number of paragraphs, and the topic sentences each had to do this and so on. 

Nobody in the world writes those kinds of essays in the real world. They're just like an academic exercise. And of course, AI now can do that beautifully. 

But any reporter will tell you that they could never use Chat AI to write their stories because stories is what they write. They write narratives. If you just put in a description, you'll be fired from your reportorial job because no one is interested in descriptions. They want a story. 

So giving students a description and teaching them to turn it into a story or teaching them to turn it into something else that has a human and creative dimension for it, how would you write this for a seventh-grader that doesn't have much experience with the world? How would you write this for somebody in Russia building on the foundation of what AI gives you and taking it in ways that only people can? That's where writing should be going. 

And of course, good writing teachers will tell you, well, that's nothing new. I've been teaching my students how to write descriptive essays. The people who are most qualified to talk about the limits of AI are the ones who teach what the AI is supposedly doing. 

Jill Anderson:  So do you have any helpful tips for educators regardless of what level they're working at on where to kind of begin embracing this technology? 

Chris Dede: What AI can do well is what's called reckoning, which is calculative prediction. And I've given some examples of that with flooding in Des Moines and other kinds of things. And what people do is practical wisdom, if you will, and it involves culture and ethics and what it's like to be embodied and to have the biological things that are part of human nature and so on. 

So when I look at what I'm teaching, I have to ask myself, how much of what I'm teaching is reckoning? So I'm preparing people to lose to AI. And how much of what I'm teaching is practical wisdom? 

So for example, we spend a lot of time in vocational technical education and standard academic education teaching people to factor. How do you factor these complex polynomials? 

There is no workplace anywhere in the world, even in the most primitive possible conditions, where anybody makes a living by factoring. It's an app. It's an app on a phone. Should you know a little bit about factoring so it's not magic? Sure. 

Should you become fluent in factoring? Absolutely not. It's on the wrong side of the equation.  So I think just teachers and curriculum developers and assessors and stakeholders in the outcomes of education need to ask themselves, what is being taught now, and which parts of it are shifting over? And how do we include enough about those parts that AI isn't magic? But how do we change the balance of our focus to be more on the practical wisdom side? 

Jill Anderson:  So final thoughts here — don't be scared but figure out how to use this to your advantage? 

Chris Dede: Yeah, don't be scared. AI is not smart. It really isn't. People would be appalled if they knew how little AI understands what it's telling you, especially given how much people seem to be relying on it. But it is capable of taking over parts of what you do that are routine and predictable and, in turn, freeing up the creative and the innovative and the human parts that are really the rewarding part of both work the life.

Analyzing the question of the implementation of the ChatGDP and other options of artificial intelligence, it is essential to identify a significant problem that this implementation would solve. Thus, today one of the critical issues is to find modern methods of improving education and learning. In this regard, the introduction of AI technologies will formulate the goal of achieving more effective methods of teaching and studying. Therefore, due to the possibilities that AI opens up, one has the opportunity to analyze those aspects that were impossible to explore before. For example, as Marche argues, given that AI can already write some literary works, it will help to understand better how the literary masterpieces of famous writers were written. This information can be applied in education as an additional theoretical basis and to explain new, unexplored factors.

The concept of AI (artificial intelligence) includes the science and technology of creating intelligent machines and specially developed computer programs. AI is not always limited to probable biological principles, it is rather connected with understanding human mind utilizing computers. Creative activities are usually considered to be performed by humans, however, AI can realize and repeat its basic principles. Besides, the term AI implies methods and science of creating intelligent mechanisms. Recently, more and more variants of artificial intelligence have appeared, and humanity is increasingly cooperating with it. Based on this, one needs to provide an efficient infrastructure for close cooperation with AI, including in education, as it will make the processes much more efficient.

The main range of activities, which includes artificial intelligence in education, is Data Science. It is related to how to put a hypothesis based on the data, how to test it later, and, based on the tested assumption, come to something. With the help of artificial intelligence, one has the ability to complete these processes faster, more accurately, and efficiently. Diagnosis of communication skills using AI can be helpful in the training and development of sales managers, educators, and other professionals whose work involves much communication. However, the main advantage of the more advanced use of artificial intelligence is the ability to uncover mysteries and analyze the mechanisms associated with outstanding literary achievements.

Moreover, due to artificial intelligence, one can study a person’s speech or writing. It is due to analytical algorithms, which can help to clarify how diverse the speech or text is, how often tautology is used, what errors were made, and other crucial factors (Neuman et al. 29). Thus, one has the ability to define factors and criteria for quality speech and writing and methods for achieving literacy. It also allows one to analyze the mistakes made by students more deeply, which will promote teaching literacy effectively. Such an analysis could help diagnose students’ communication skills, recommend the right development track, or evaluate learning effectiveness by comparing performance before and after.

Artificial intelligence technologies are able to generate tasks that test language literacy and text understanding. For example, put the jumbled sentences of the text in order or choose the correct phrase to fill in a gap in a sentence. In addition, it is worth noting that when checking open answers by an expert, the problem of subjectivity arises. Using AI, this issue is leveled since unique Data Science algorithms are involved (Shengquan 109). Thus, one has the opportunity to get a more accurate and objective test result than using a human resource. Nowadays, school programs are stable set of information for any student without considering person’s skills and interests, formulating the key modern downside of education. In this regard, AI can help develop a learning infrastructure based on a personalized approach quickly and efficiently.

Besides, there is another significant aspect of artificial intelligence’s utilization in education and literature. Many works of art are damaged, which makes it impossible to evaluate and analyze them comprehensively. It is especially common among old works written many centuries ago, which, however, are of the most significant historical value. AI text analysis and prediction technologies can help restore damaged or lost works of literature or science (Marche). Therefore, one will be provided an opportunity to make a breakthrough in the aspect of studying new, still unexplored works. Thus, March’s arguments have a strong point in articulating the motivation for training providers to implement AI technologies. Moreover, literature data show that the introduction of ChatGPT and GPT-3 will increase student interest by increasing diversity and effectiveness.

AI will modernize the learning system using a new approach based on increasing students’ motivation. It can be achieved by providing information and directions for students that are of interest to them. Thus, the specific software allows student to log in, pass a interview in which one’s knowledge and interests would be considered (Shengquan 129). Teachers would have a possibility to follow studying process and have access to student information. In turn, based on the results of interview, the curriculum may be changed according to student’s own interests. Moreover, these programs should evolve and change depending on the development of the students. For this, it is necessary to analyze vast amounts of data, for which a person must spend several years. However, AI has the ability to complete this analysis in a few hours, saving valuable time.

Further, AI technologies help to monitor the psychological health of students in schools and other educational institutions. AI evaluates the quality of their assimilation of the material and analyzes teachers’ professional skills (Shengquan 112). The modern need for distance learning has only accelerated the process of integrating such technologies. With the online format, along with many of its advantages, the student loses the main thing, namely, live communication with the teacher.

During such contact, the teacher is able to understand the emotions of students and take this into account in the educational process. For example, change the complexity of the educational material (Shengquan 112). Depending on the emotional state of a particular student, various multimedia components can be used to explain the material, such as text and audio recordings or images and videos. Ultimately, even simple words of encouragement from a teacher can be uplifting and motivating. Implementing AI technologies in distance learning would allow one to apply all the abovementioned points.

In my project, I liked the aspect of applying the found information in a theoretical aspect. In other words, how was the synthesis of data performed at the initial stage, analysis, and application of it when working on a project. However, at the same time, I liked the selection of information the least as today, it is difficult to find reliable and verified data. In my opinion, you will most enjoy the evidence-based approach in my project. Namely, all my own thoughts are confirmed with background information from peer-reviewed articles and sources, which formulates the scientific method of creating projects. If I had more time and energy, I would devote more effort to researching relevant information on the subject of the project. It is stated by the fact that the topic is really interesting to me; unfortunately, I do not have enough time and energy to study more sources and read more texts.

What is artificial intelligence? AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to computing systems that work similarly to human brains. The human brain processes data through organic neural networks, and AI emulates these networks. AI was designed to perform tasks not easily defined by specific algorithms, such as image and voice recognition & generation, text generation, and more. Essentially, it's any task that requires recognizing patterns with numerous parameters.

Making computers understand like humans, think like humans, and act like humans is done by instilling data as instructions and inputs.

AI In Everyday Life | Advancement in technology has a direct influence on our lives, businesses and social life. Whether or not we consciously realise it, AI has begun to penetrate the various aspects of our everyday lives. If we observe, many aspects of our everyday lives now involve the use of artificial intelligence, for instance, face ID and image recognition features in mobile phones, emails, various apps, digital voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, Google search, route mapping, traffic updates, weather updates, Netflix and Amazon for entertainment, etc.

The field of computer science and engineering has attempted to simulate the features of human intelligence for a very long time with the help of machines, which is called artificial intelligence. British mathematician and computer pioneer, Alan Turing, initiated developments in the then new field of artificial intelligence. In 1950, Turing predicted that a machine will one day be able to completely replicate human intellect.

Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines that would make human life easier. It is concerned with getting computers to do tasks that would normally require human intelligence. AI started showing promising solutions for industry and businesses as well as our daily lives. Artificial Intelligence has been categorised into four categories by Arend Hintze:-

The first types of AI are those machines which can react to certain situations but don’t have any sort of memory and hence cannot learn or use past experience. For example – computer chess games.

The second types of AI are those machines which are capable of using past memory to form future ones. An excellent example of this second type of AI is self-driven cars.

The third type of AI at present only exists in theory, and as per the imagination, it will be able to have human emotions like beliefs, desires, opinions, intentions, etc.

The fourth form of AI if ever comes to exist would be the type of AI machine that will be able to have a sense of self-awareness, emotions and consciousness. If this type of AI ever comes to exist, then it would be a real revolution.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Artificial Intelligence

Just like two sides to a coin, artificial intelligence is subject to be beneficial and have harmful impacts too.

Saves Manual Effort | One of the emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, is proven to be beneficial. It lessens the burden of work that is to be done manually and so a person may save a lot of time with the help of technology. AI can work endlessly without getting tired, unlike humans, and hence bring more work productivity.

Reduces Human Interaction | The negative effects of artificial intelligence are numerous. Any new technology is only intended to make our work simpler; it does not imply that we should stop working. AI requires less human interaction, making students more engaged with the online world than the world in front of them.

AI Can Transform the Classroom Just Like the Calculator

AI can better education, not threaten it, if we learn some lessons from the adoption of the calculator into the classroom

The rapidly expanding use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools has fired up a fervent debate in academia. On one side of the debate, professors and teachers are concerned over the future of postsecondary learning and threats to traditional disciplines, especially within the humanities , as headlines warn of “The End of the English Major.”

Nevertheless, AI is here and about a third of teachers, from kindergarten through high school, report using it in the classroom, according to a recent survey . While many of our colleagues in higher education policy, science policy, and university design criticize or dismiss generative AI, we are instead decidedly optimistic it will follow a pattern seen in other technologies that have enhanced educational access and success. We believe that when new technologies are embraced, core aspects of learning, including curriculum, instruction and assessment, can be revolutionized. We are optimistic about AI, but we don’t see it as a hero. Students and instructors are still the heroes of human learning, even when AI is involved.

History supports this view. From the Gutenberg press to online math classes, technologies that improve access to quality learning opportunities are routinely dismissed by critics and skeptics, especially by those who hold the reins in the classroom.

Consider the calculator. A survey in the mid-1970s carried out by Mathematics Teacher magazine found that 72 percent of respondents—mainly teachers and mathematicians—opposed equipping seventh graders with calculators. Highlighted in 1975 in Science News , this survey mirrored the broader discourse of the Sesame Street era concerning the introduction of calculators into classrooms, just when costs were approaching the point that some schools could afford to have up to one calculator per student.

Calculators met resistance from educators who feared an overdependence on technology would erode students’ math skills. As one professor observed of students and calculators, “I have yet to be convinced that handing them a machine and teaching them how to push the button is the right approach. What do they do when the battery runs out?”

It is easy to see how the case of the calculator mirrors current concerns about generative AI. The College Board made a similar argument in an article published last spring that mused about the “ Great Calculator Panic of the 1980s and ‘90s. ” Critics of AI in the classroom argue that students might never learn to write or respond to written prompts independently if they can simply ask an AI to do it for them. The hypothetical scenario where the Internet or servers are down raises fears that students would be unable to write a simple sentence or compose a basic five-paragraph essay.

Narrow arguments over essay integrity and potential declines in learning quality miss the broader perspective on how this technology could positively reshape curriculum, instruction and assessment.

In classrooms, technology, curriculum, instruction, and assessment evolve together to reshape education. We see this historically with calculators and are now witnessing it unfold in real time with the emergence of generative AI tools.

The introduction of calculators into classrooms didn't set in motion the demise of mathematics education; instead, it significantly broadened its scope while inspiring educators and academics to rethink the educational limits of mathematics. This shift fostered a climate ripe for innovation. Looking at today’s math landscape and what existed in the 1970s, we would be hard-pressed to consider the past superior to the present, to say nothing of the future. Today, high school students use (and more importantly, comprehend) graphing calculators and computers better than undergraduate engineering students in university labs could only a generation ago. Today’s math learning environment is observably more dynamic, inclusive and creative than it was before ubiquitous access to calculators.

In a parallel vein, generative AI promises to extend this kind of innovation in critical thinking and the humanities, making it easier for students to grasp foundational concepts and explore advanced topics with confidence. AI could allow for customized learner support —adapting to the individual pace and learning style of each student, helping to make education more inclusive and tailored to specific needs. Generative AI can better the humanities by making reading and writing more accessible to diverse students, including those with learning disabilities or challenges with traditional writing methods.

Just as calculators led us to reevaluate legacy teaching methods and embrace more effective pedagogical approaches, generative AI calls for a similar transformation in how we approach assignments, conduct classes and assess learning. It will shift us from viewing the college essay as the pinnacle of learning to embracing wider creative and analytical exercises, ones facilitated by AI tools.

The successful integration of calculators into math education serves as a blueprint for the adoption of generative AI across the curriculum. By designing assignments with the expectation that generative AI will enhance rather than shortcut them, educators can foster learning that values creativity, critical thinking and efficient study. This shift necessitates a broader, more adaptable approach to teaching and learning, one that recognizes the potential of technology to elevate educational standards and broaden access to knowledge.

This history points to broader questions over the efficiency and fairness of long-standing educational mechanisms. Take, for example, college admissions essays , which are known to perpetuate bias in university admissions . What if AI allowed us to reconceptualize the tools for students to demonstrate their aptitude and college preparedness? What if AI could allow students to match their intended college major more accurately to the most supportive and corresponding place of higher learning? In academia, we shouldn’t focus solely on AI’s potential for misuse but also on its capability to revolutionize curricula and approaches to learning and teaching.

Far from fearing technological progress, history teaches us to embrace it to broaden and democratize learning . The greater challenge lies not in resisting change, but in leveraging these innovations to develop curricula that address the needs of all learners, paving the way for a more equal and effective education for everyone. Looking ahead, generative AI is not so much a problem to be solved, but instead a powerful ally in our efforts to make education meaningfully universal.

ChatGPT, a popular artificial intelligence tool that can generate written materials in response to prompts, reached 100 million monthly active users in January 2023, just two months after its launch. The unprecedented escalation made OpenAI’s creation the fastest-growing consumer application in history, according to a report from UBS based on analytics from Similarweb .

Responses from the world of education to an AI tool that could write essays for students were immediate and mixed , with some teachers concerned about student cheating and plagiarism and others celebrating its potential to generate new ideas for instruction and lesson planning.

Various researchers in UC Irvine’s School of Education are studying the wide range of technological innovations available to enhance education, including assistant professors Shayan Doroudi and Nia Nixon . One facet of Doroudi’s research focuses on how different technologies improve learning. A segment of Nixon’s work centers on developing AI-based interventions to promote inclusivity in team problem-solving environments.

How are artificial intelligence tools currently affecting teaching and learning? What are some of the most promising applications that have been developed so far? How are AI tools being used to personalize learning experiences – and what are the benefits and drawbacks of that approach? What’s next? Today’s episode focuses on artificial intelligence and education, and we have a pair of guests willing to share their wisdom on this ever-changing topic. They’re from UC Irvine’s School of Education – Shayan Doroudi and Nia Nixon – both assistant professors.

Professor Doroudi runs the Mathe lab. Mathe is a Greek word for “learn,” but it’s also an acronym for Models, Analytics, Technologies, and Histories of Education. The lab has a particular focus on the multifaceted relationship between AI and education, including the historical connections between the two fields, which spans over 50 years.

Nixon heads the Language and Learning Analytics Lab – or LaLa Lab – which explores the intersections of technology with learning and education, with a particular focus on learning analytics, AI and collaborative engagement. Thank you both for joining us today.

Yeah, thank you for having us.

Let’s start our conversation with what makes you tick. What first drew your attention to AI and education?

So, for me, I was an undergrad at the University of Memphis, and I was exploring different research labs. So, I tried cognitive psychology and clinical psychology and then I got into what was called the Affective Computing Lab. And so, in that lab we did a lot of analysis and assessment of students’ emotions while they were learning. So, we would track their pupil movements, postural shifts, language, while they were engaging with intelligent tutoring systems. It was inherently a very AI-focused lab and that sort of birthed my interest in the field and all of its possibilities.

And what about you, Professor Doroudi?

Yeah, so, I didn’t start as early in my undergraduate career, but while I was an undergraduate student, I took a class online. It was a MOOC – massive open online course. So, there was one course that was about artificial intelligence, and it drew like 160,000 students or something. I was one of those many, many students. I liked the content of the course, but I also liked how the course was being delivered and the educational experience. I think that sort of seeded my interest, in some sense, in both AI and education.

I did an internship at Udacity, which was a company that put out that course. And at some point in that internship, I said, “I think I want to do this for my Ph.D. I want to study how to improve education with tools like AI and machine learning.” And so, that sort of started my experience.

And I didn’t know about intelligent tutoring systems – which Nia referred to – but when I actually started at my Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University, I realized, “Oh, people have been working on this for decades.” And then I learned about intelligent student tutoring systems and started working on them for my Ph.D. as well.

It’s nice for me to hear that you had “discovery moments” with the tools because they are ever- changing and, in the grand scheme of life, they’re still fairly new. So, it’s good to hear from who I see as seasoned experts in the field that you also had that new “ah ha!” moment and came to AI through kind of a genuine experience.

How are AI tools currently impacting teaching and learning, and what are some of the most promising applications that you’ve seen?

It’s interesting. If you asked me this like two years ago, I would’ve talked about certain tools, but I think probably most listeners are aware that things have changed a lot over the past year with ChatGPT and generative artificial intelligence. Now, there are so many new tools that are popping up, so many new ways that people are trying to use it. And one hope I have is that people don’t forget that people have been actually working on this before ChatGPT.

There’s lots of things that we mentioned – intelligent tutoring systems. These are platforms to help students learn sort of in an individualized or personalized way to guide them through problem solving. So, there’s more traditional ones of those and then now, with ChatGPT, people are trying to create these chatbots that can help tutor students. And I think we’ll get to this a little bit later – there are pros and cons of the different approaches, and there’s things to watch out for. But yeah, I think there’s a lot of interesting tools being developed currently.

I completely agree with Shayan. If you walk away with anything from this conversation, it’s that this isn’t a new field. Decades of research have been put into using AI in educational context. And a lot of those sort of fall into three super broad categories of assessment – using AI to assess education in different ways. Personalization – so, intelligent tutoring systems is a great example of that. And then educational delivery, content delivery. But that’s definitely been incredibly transformed in the last two years by all of the things that he was just discussing.

One of the most promising things? That’s a huge question, and it’s really hard for me to even begin to answer because I also know that this is being recorded. So, I think what I think is the most promising thing in this moment today versus tomorrow will probably be different.

But I will say that I think the conversational aspects of these newer models – and the social aspects in the context of education – are huge. And what we can do with that – the human-like engagement that we can do – it opens the door for a host of different possibilities.

Professor Nixon, you just talked about the personalization aspect, one of the ways that AI tools are being used. How do they personalize learning experiences for students? How can they do that?

Right, great question. Historically, we’ve been able to sort of map out a student’s knowledge of a particular subject and then provide them with – or expose them to – different levels of difficulty in content as they navigate through any educational platform. So that means you – as a novice – I might unfold things in a personalized way for you to not overwhelm you and not have you disengage or become frustrated.

Another way is dealing with emotion. So, as I mentioned earlier, I started out in an affective computing lab and one of the huge things that came out of that is emotions are important for learning, which is odd that that’s a new kind of thing – relatively new – but when you’re confused or frustrated, you’re more likely to disengage than you when you’re in flow and everything disappears and everything is at the right level for you.

So, AI can be used to go, “Hey, I think you look a little confused. Let me give you a hint. Oh, it looks like you might have a misconception. Let me correct that for you.” So, you don’t slip into these unproductive states of learning – affective states of learning. So, those are two examples. There are tons more of how AI can be used to kind of personalize the learning journey for students.

What are the benefits and the potential drawbacks of that kind of personalized approach?

One of the drawbacks is our kind of over-reliance on technology. I struggle with this thought because it feels antiquated in some way because I feel like if you look in history, there was pushback on writing things down when we first started writing things down. There was pushback on the printing press. And there’s pushback here because we’re saying, “Oh, we’re over relying on technology and AI and we’re outsourcing so much of our cognitive abilities to AI.” But also, we got past all of these other obstacles and those weren’t actually very accurate. So, there’s a tension there, when I say about that being a drawback.

I think one benefit is that teachers can’t necessarily give individualized attention to every student. So, if we are able to personalize experiences as well for individual students, they might be able to get sort of a unique experience that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to get in a large classroom.

At the same time, I don’t want to overemphasize that because I think there’s a lot of hype and a lot of companies will try to sell the products as doing this perfect kind of personalization, but we still haven’t figured it out really. And a good teacher can do certain things – or a good tutor can do certain things – that I don’t think we’ve been able to replicate with technology, with AI.

You know, we can personalize in certain ways, as Nia mentioned, but I think learning is very complex and this is something I’ve realized in my own research. I’ve tried to do some of this work, and I’ve realized it’s easier said than done, right? And so, learning is just very complex. And when you bring in the emotional pieces, the social pieces, like we don’t really know how to model all of that to know what’s the right thing to do.

And the technology’s limited by what it can do, whereas a teacher can say, “Okay, if this isn’t working, you know, let’s all just go outside. Let’s do something totally different.” And a teacher can come up with that on the spot. No AI tool that I know of is doing something like that.

With modern approaches now with these language-based tutors – these chatbots – they can seem like they can personalize very well, but they actually lack some of the rich understanding that Nia talked about earlier, like modeling exactly the kinds of knowledge that we want students to learn and knowing exactly what to do.

The way it’s approaching it is totally different. It’s doing it in a way that we don’t really – can’t really – predict what it’s going to do. And so, as researchers and educators, we don’t really know what it’s going to do. So, sometimes it’ll behave really well, and sometimes it might not – a lot of times it doesn’t actually. So, that’s one of the drawbacks to really be aware of.

You alluded earlier, Professor Doroudi, to some of the ethical considerations that go into integrating AI into education. What do those look like?

Yeah, I think there’s a number of ethical considerations. One is data from students and data privacy issues. I’m not an expert on that but I think, “Where’s that data going? Who has access to it?” Sometimes these are companies that make these tools. What do they do with that data? Are they selling it to people or to other companies? And so, I think there’s lots of considerations there.

And another one that I’ve been interested in – in my own work – is this issue of equity. And AI has a lot of biases that when we fit models to data that can be biased in many different ways. And these biases sometimes, you know, it’s not that someone’s not well-intentioned. Sometimes we have the best of intentions, but now we’re sort of seeding some of our authority to this tool that we’ve developed, but we don’t really know what it’s going to do in all cases.

So, it might behave differently with different students from different backgrounds. For example, with ChatGPT or these language-based AI tools, they’re trained on data. And their data might be more representative of certain kinds of students and not others, right? And then when interacting with students who might speak different dialects or just come from a different cultural background from whatever cultural backgrounds were most representing that data, the AI might interact differently with those students in ways that we might not even expect ahead of time.

We’ve talked about some of the concerns that arise when we implement AI in the learning environment. Are there any that haven’t been mentioned yet?

When we think about what these systems could look like in a couple of years, they’re going to move from just focusing on cognitive development – or primarily cognitive development – to becoming multimodal sensing agents. And by that, I mean we can start to have rooms that can track your facial expressions when you move in and out of them and track different physical shifts as well as your language and discourse and use all of that for good, in one instance, where we’re saying, “Oh, we can track when a student is stressed out, or different social developmental things that would be helpful.”

I think another concern there is a different type of privacy that I don’t hear talked about a lot – beyond just the data privacy – but maybe we could call it like emotional privacy of students and sort of what we expect to be our internal states of being and being kind of exposed by these AI systems. And so, I think that that’s an interesting one – one I’m still percolating on. I don’t know how to best discuss it just yet, but I think that it will become, um, a topic of conversation moving forward.

Yeah, there’s a lot of concern that these tools are going to be used for surveillance, right, and for ill intentions, right? Like, it might sound like, “Oh, this is great. We’re able to track all of these things. We have all these sensors in the classroom,” and it’s like, “Well, what are you doing with it?”

And as we’ve seen with, for example, like during the pandemic, a lot of universities and high schools, they were using these proctoring software and they would be using video data to see is the student doing something – misbehaving. At the beginning, they used some facial recognition software and sometimes some software wouldn’t detect students with darker skin tones and so there’s issues like that. And then sometimes the student might be doing something – maybe they have a tic or something – and the software would flag them as cheating, right? So, it’s like surveillance that really has negative repercussions, again, due to biases that I mentioned earlier.

With this increasing reliance on AI and education, how do we ensure equitable access to these technologies for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background or perhaps their geographical location?

I think that kind of a task for policymakers, right? Prioritizing projects that are aimed at contributing to that – I think it’s a huge one. And – to some of Shayan’s concerns as well – we need policies in place to both protect students and ensure access to these things. And that’s kind of two sides of the same coin, right? We want you to have it and we want to protect you from it as well.

Looking ahead, what do you envision as the next breakthrough for the use of AI in education?

Forefront in my mind is something that I’ve been very fascinated by for the last couple of years – and that we actually have a collaboration going on around – is this idea of… well, I also want to give a shout out to an article called “Machines as Teammates” – it’s got like 12 authors. It’s a conceptual piece all around “what does it look like when we stop using AI as a tool?”

So, like Alexa or Siri, like, “Hey, do this for me, put this on my shopping list.” And it becomes something akin to you and I speaking right now. We treat it very much like another human. We engage with it, we help it, it helps us, we navigate and solve problems together in teams.

And so, I think – to your question – I think the next kind of big breakthrough, or one of the next big breakthroughs that we are working on, is imagining, or starting to study, AI as teammates. So, AI not as a virtual agent or a virtual tutor, but AI is another peer student trying to solve the problem alongside you with all the same and different, perhaps unique emotions and cognitions and things. So, I think that that will be interesting to see.

I’m always wary to make predictions because it’s so hard, you know, I wouldn’t have predicted this sort of boom in interest in AI and education that came about when ChatGPT got released. But I think one prediction that I might make is that the future of AI in education is going to be bespoke.

By that, I mean that we’re not going to see like one killer app that everyone’s going to be using and it’s going to be used in all schools. That’s never really happened in the history of educational technology. So many people have talked about the promise of a particular application or a particular software or tool, and for a while there was a lot of interest in that, and then it sort of died out for various reasons.

But I think what we see now happening is that sort of the AI is being put in the hands of people who previously couldn’t create their own tools. Now they can sort of try to create tools with the AI, right? Through things like prompt engineering, you can prompt the AI to behave in a certain way. And as I mentioned – as we’ve discussed earlier – this has a lot of limitations. You can’t always expect it to behave in the way you expect, but now teachers can create a custom application for their classroom that was not really possible before. Or school districts can come up with custom applications with AI that, again, wasn’t really possible before – you know, a company had to develop something that many school districts would adopt.

So, I think we’re going to see a lot of these sort of custom tools being built by individual educators, by districts and various stakeholders, right? By students themselves, right? Students can create AI tools – that itself is an educational experience. So, I think we’re going to this sort of proliferation of different tools that we don’t even know, you know… as researchers, we won’t even know what’s being developed. But some of them will be working really well in some cases. Some of them might not. And then, hopefully they’ll move on and try something different.

What steps can educators and policymakers take to kind of prepare for whatever the next wave is? I mean, ChatGPT came in like a tsunami and washed over all of us and was a gigantic “wow!” And not knowing what’s next, is there anything that educators and policymakers can do to get ready for that?

Yeah, that’s a tough one. I part of getting ready for the next step is really understanding what’s going on with what AI really is, how these tools work. And I think that speaks to AI literacy. You know, we talk about this for students, often. This has been a growing area: that students need to be literate about AI tools because they’re common society. So many jobs are now requiring them, otherwise they might displace people’s jobs – you know, a lot of the rhetoric that exists out there.

But I think teachers also need to be AI literate. They have to understand what these tools are, how they work, when they don’t work. And part of that AI literacy, I think, could be the more you have of it – if a new tool comes about, you can more quickly get up to speed with that, right? Rather than going from scratch to like, “Oh, I have to understand what this tool is entirely.”

So, if we work – you know, policymakers, researchers and educators – if we work together to increase efforts in AI literacy, both for students and for teachers and administrators, all the stakeholders, then I think people will have some familiarity with what these tools are and how they work. Just like people, hopefully, teachers already have familiarity with computers, the internet, these tools. So, if new things come about, they can adapt to these things.

But with AI because it’s sort of a little bit more foreign and people don’t have a good sense of what’s happening behind the scenes, I think there needs to be more work developing that. And that’s one thing we’re doing right now in my lab with a Ph.D. student of mine: we’re actually trying to survey undergraduate students to see how much literacy they have about these new generative AI tools and what some common misconceptions might be. So that’s the first step, understanding what people already know and what they don’t know, and then working to address those barriers and challenges.

I couldn’t agree more. So, policymakers can support efforts for AI literacy. One of my classes I teach is called “21st Century Literacies.” And in that class, we cover collaboration, communication, creativity – all of these things that have become increasingly important in the 21st century – not that they weren’t important before – but as we’ve moved from an industrial, individualized sort to more collectivist working environments, collaborative working environments, I think AI literacy is just as, if not more important, than all of those. And I’ve started to integrate that into the classroom because it’s so critical for students and teachers to have some type of foundation to navigate because I feel like a lot of the flailing that you might kind of see right now in education and AI is a lack of education around AI and/or misinformation around it. And so, addressing some of those is going be great moving forward.

Is there anything that either of you wanted to share that I didn’t ask about that you thought, “This is something I want to make sure I bring to this conversation and share with the audience?”

Maybe a closing point is there’s been a lot of discussion around the pros and cons of AI and education and some people just trying to shut it down initially, or shut down the most recent wave, completely remove it from the classroom. And I don’t think that that is a realistic approach or a helpful approach. I think this ties nicely into the AI literacy where this is not a switch that we can turn off. We are here, for better or for worse. And I think doing rigorous research around a lot of the topics that we discussed today is how we move forward, combined with educating students and teachers, and learning how to use this to our benefit. Instead of being fearful of it.

One thing I’d like to add is we’ve been talking so far about AI tools, right? And AI – for practical purposes – how it’s going to be used, for better or for worse, in classrooms. But one focus of my research has been AI not only as sort of this practical tool, but as this lens to understand human intelligence and ourselves as people. And that was actually really the quest for developing AI in the early days – was really focused on developing tools that that could help us understand how the mind works from a cognitive science perspective. And so, I think that’s sort of been … I wouldn’t say completely forgotten. There are still people thinking about that, but I think it’s been largely abandoned because AI has become so powerful as a tool that people just focus on it as like, “What can we do with it?”

And the AIs that we’ve developed have looked very different from people. So, I think because of that, people have just sort of moved away from that. But I think thinking about how AI can help us understand ourselves better, and this has a lot of educational implications. A lot of those early researchers were interested in, “Well, how can we understand how people learn and then use that to improve education?” And I think there’s a lot of opportunities there. With some of the new tools, for example, a lot of people talk about how, “Oh, these tools are amazing! They seem to show aspects of intelligence, but they also have these weird behaviors that are very not human-like.” So, by reflecting on these tools – by reflecting on things like ChatGPT – we can think about, “What does that tell us about ourselves as people?”

And how can students engage in experiences with these AIs to understand what makes us distinctly human in a sense? And one project we’re trying to get started on this, I’m collaborating with UCI philosophy professor Duncan Pritchard – who was actually a previous guest on this podcast – and we’re thinking about how what AI can tell us about intellectual virtues and how children interacting, or youth interacting, with AI can learn more about the importance of intellectual virtues, which AI, I would say, does not have.
