How to prepare Primary lessons for a fifth Sunday

A multitude of resources help primary teachers, leaders and parents teach children about the covenant path.

A Primary teacher teaches a class.

During months with a fifth Sunday — like October and December of this year — Primary teachers have the option to teach a special lesson to their classes about making and keeping covenants.

These covenant path lessons better prepare children for baptism and confirmation, teach them about the importance of the sacrament, and help them understand priesthood power and the blessings of the temple.

For help preparing a fifth Sunday lesson, “ Preparing Children for a Lifetime on God’s Covenant Path ” is a series of learning activities that can be found in the appendix of the “ Come, Follow Me — For Primary ” New Testament 2023 manual.

Next year, the appendix will be found in the combined manual for “Come, Follow Me.”

Primary General President Susan H. Porter interacts with children during an episode of the Friend to Friend.

When Primary General  President Susan H. Porter  spoke about the new resources with  the Church News in November 2022 , she said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Primary teachers to choose from the material what would be most appropriate for their age group or what their class is preparing for.”

Sections are included on the following topics:

  • Principles and ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Confirmation
  • The sacrament
  • Priesthood power, authority and keys
  • The temple and the plan of happiness

“These resources can help our children understand what  President [Russell M.] Nelson  has been teaching the adults about priesthood power through covenants — this even applies to children when they are baptized,” President Porter said.

Teachers can also draw from the special issue of the Friend called “ Baptism and Confirmation ,” or any of the Friend to Friend broadcasts which have taught about the covenant path.

In addition to the fifth Sunday, the lessons can also be incorporated into Primary lessons throughout the year.

Erika Paulsen in the Centerville Utah 20th Ward said the covenant path resources in the appendix have helped her teach her young class this year to prepare for baptism.

“It’s just like the missionary discussions. It’s the things put simply that they need to know to get ready for baptism and to have conversion. I think it has worked really well,” Paulsen said.

The role of the ward Primary presidency

One of the most important responsibilities of each ward or branch Primary presidency is to help parents prepare children to enter and progress along the covenant path.

The General Handbook  Section 12.3.2 states in part:

“To accomplish this, the Primary president may assign a member of the presidency to help parents prepare their children to be baptized and confirmed. The Primary president may assign another presidency member to help parents with temple and priesthood preparation for their children.”

A family walks on the temple grounds.

In an article for the Church News in April 2022 , the Primary general presidency wrote that as Primary presidencies prayerfully ponder how to provide support for parents and their children, they cannot forget Primary teachers and ministering brothers and sisters.

“They are a valuable resource to parents and their children in preparing children for covenant making and keeping. Everything we do — including singing time, class time, Primary activities and ministering — can help children understand, make and keep sacred covenants with God.”

The role of parents

The Primary general presidency wrote last April that helping children enter, progress and stay on the covenant path is one of a parent’s most important responsibilities. It is also a key focus of how ward Primaries can support parents.

When Primary teachers, leaders and parents help children prepare for baptism and confirmation or for priesthood ordination and temple service, they are helping them prepare for more than an event.

“We are teaching them to understand priesthood power and blessings for boys and girls, and we are preparing them for a lifetime of covenant keeping, service and discipleship. This will require ongoing teaching, love and ministering, one by one,” wrote the presidency.

Parents have access to a series of discussion guides for talking about covenants in normal and natural ways in the home. “ Preparing Your Children for a Lifetime on God’s Covenant Path ” can be found in the appendix of the “ Come, Follow Me — For Individuals and Families ” New Testament 2023 manual and will be in the combined Book of Mormon manual in 2024.

Parents and children read the Friend magazine together.

Other resources include the Friend magazine , the Friend social media channels and Gospel for Kids YouTube channel .

President Porter said, “Our hope is that with the help of parents and Primary teachers, children will come to understand and want to live the covenants they make with their Heavenly Father when they are baptized — and look forward to walking the covenant path with the Savior throughout their lives.”

Invite Sharing

To give children a chance to share what they have already learned, show a picture of Jesus being baptized. Ask them to tell you what is happening in the picture and how they feel about being baptized.

I got these wooden frames at Dollar tree and stained them with watered down brown paint.

Teach the Doctrine: Younger Children

Matthew 3:13–17

I can be baptized as Jesus was.

How can you use the account of Jesus’s baptism to help the children prepare to be baptized?

Possible Activities

Summarize the story of the Savior’s baptism (see Matthew 3:13–17 ; see also “ Chapter 10: Jesus Is Baptized ,” in New Testament Stories , 26–29, or the corresponding video on ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Explain that Jesus was baptized by immersion by someone who had priesthood authority. Repeat the story several times and invite the children to share the details they remember.

(Click in pictures)

primary assignments lds

Show a picture of Jesus being baptized and this week’s activity page. Let the children point out similarities between the two pictures. (There’s a picture of Jesus being baptized in this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families .)

Here is a fun baptism activity, on the back side there is a picture of a child getting baptized.

primary assignments lds

Directions: cut everything out. Attach the rounded shape to a small plastic cup and the rectangle shape to the back of the cup. Attach the pictures to the back and front of a stick or plastic butter knife, stick it through the bottom of the cup.

When assembled, the baptism pictures will be able to move up and down. Talk about the blessings we receive by following Jesus’s example.

primary assignments lds

Black and white

Review the promises the children will make when they are baptized (see Mosiah 18:8–10 ; Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 ; Gospel Topics, “ Baptism ,” topics.ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Ask them which of these things they are already doing.

Here are two activities that review our baptismal covenants.

primary assignments lds

Black and White

May want to tell them that we are reminded of those covenants every-time we take the sacrament.

Cut out everything. Read the words to the children on the cups and have them match them to the pictures.

primary assignments lds

This week has some great ways to teach our baptismal covenants, just click on the picture to be taken there.

primary assignments lds

(Just click on the image to be taken to Etsy)

primary assignments lds

Invite a member of the bishopric to tell the children about the baptismal interview they will have before they are baptized.

Sing together a song about baptism, such as “ Baptism ” ( Children’s Songbook , 100–101). Consider asking a child to lead the other children while they sing.

Matthew 3:11, 16

The Holy Ghost helps me.

In addition to preparing for baptism, the children are also preparing to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. How can you help them?

Use Matthew 3:11, 16 to teach the children that the Holy Ghost descended on Jesus when He was baptized (a dove appeared as a sign to show that this had happened). Show the picture The Gift of the Holy Ghost ( Gospel Art Book , no. 105), and explain that we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost when we are confirmed.

primary assignments lds

Bring a box containing things such as a picture of Jesus, a comforting blanket, and a compass or map. Invite the children to select an item, and let them explain how each object represents a way the Holy Ghost can help us—He testifies of Jesus (see John 15:26 ), comforts us (see John 14:26 ), and shows us the right way (see 2 Nephi 32:5 ).

You can put these in your box, and/or you can have the children match them after the scripture is read.

primary assignments lds

Share your own experiences with receiving help from the Holy Ghost.

Invite the children to listen for ways the Holy Ghost helps us as they sing a song about Him, such as “ The Holy Ghost ” ( Children’s Songbook , 105).

Valentines is coming, here are a couple of ideas, if you would like to give your primary children a treat.

primary assignments lds

Here is a treasure scripture journal, if you are going for a more sophisticated valentine gift(: Print on sticker paper and put it on a note book.

primary assignments lds

Teach the Doctrine: Older Children

I am blessed by the ordinances of the aaronic priesthood..

John the Baptist held the Aaronic Priesthood, so reading about him in Matthew 3 is a good opportunity to teach the children about the Aaronic Priesthood. Help them recognize the blessings and power that come to us through this priesthood.

Here is a fun way to teach this, you can also print in B&W for coloring pages.

primary assignments lds

Invite the children to make a list of Aaronic Priesthood duties, using Doctrine and Covenants 20:46, 58–60 ; 84:111 . Ask the children to look in Matthew 3 for examples of John fulfilling some of these duties. How can all of us invite others to come unto Christ, as John did?

Display some pictures of Aaronic Priesthood holders performing the ordinances of baptism and the sacrament (see Gospel Art Book , nos. 103–4 , 107–8 ). Discuss how these ordinances prepare us to receive Jesus Christ and the blessings of His Atonement.

Read together Doctrine and Covenants 13:1 , and testify that John the Baptist restored the Aaronic Priesthood to Joseph Smith. Ask the children how they have been blessed because the Aaronic Priesthood was restored.

This is the study of D&C 13:1.

primary assignments lds

Matthew 3:13–17 ; Mark 1:1–11 ; Luke 3:2–18

I can keep my baptismal covenants.

Learning about the account of Jesus’s baptism provides a good opportunity to help the children review their baptismal covenants and recommit to keeping them.

Invite the children to take turns reading verses from Mark 1:1–11 . Discuss why Heavenly Father wants us to be baptized. Why was Jesus baptized, even though He did not need to be cleansed from sin? Help the children find answers to this question in Matthew 3:13–15 and 2 Nephi 31:6–7 .

Review the covenants the children made at baptism, found in Mosiah 18:8–10 and Doctrine and Covenants 20:37 . Invite the children to write these references on this week’s activity page.

Prepare several pairs of cards with matching phrases or pictures that represent our baptismal covenants. Place the cards facedown. Invite the children to take turns turning over two at a time, looking for a match. After a match is made, invite children to share ways they have kept that covenant.

primary assignments lds

(Print Two on card stock)

Another fun idea, to help the children remember their baptismal covenants.

primary assignments lds

Share how keeping your baptismal covenants has blessed you.

primary assignments lds

The Holy Ghost can guide me.

Children are learning how to recognize and follow the Holy Ghost’s guidance. Help them understand that keeping their baptismal covenants will help them be worthy to receive His guidance.

Object Lesson

primary assignments lds

Ask each child to read one of the following scriptures and to explain what it teaches about how the Holy Ghost speaks to us: Helaman 5:30 ; Doctrine and Covenants 6:23 ; 8:2–3 ; 11:12–13 .

primary assignments lds

Ask a child to read Matthew 3:11 . How is the Holy Ghost like fire? For instance, fire can be comforting, and it gives light to guide us (see John 15:26 ; 2 Nephi 32:5 ).

Invite the children to close their eyes and hold out their hands. Then lightly brush their palms with a feather or string. Invite them to tell you when they feel it. What does this activity teach about recognizing the impressions of the Holy Ghost?

Invite the children to share experiences they have had with the Holy Ghost. Why does keeping our covenants help us to have the guidance of the Holy Ghost?

I didn’t see the link to download he picture of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus at the top of the post. I’m trying to find the picture of them that you framed and have on bookmarks. Can you please share where that can be found?

Just click on the picture(:

I purchased your baptismal Kit Kat but for some reason when I tried to open an Etsy account they said my account was suspended. Is there any other way to get the download? I need it for tomorrow.

Etsy is its own separate company. I can’t do much there, but if you can figure out how to message me through Etsy I can at least give you a refund. The message will link me to your purchase. I’m sorry it’s so frustrating.

thank you so much. God bless you

I absolutely love all that you do to offer helpful teaching activities and at no additional cost, however, I noticed in this week's lesson several scripture spelling mistakes in the origami pdf (6 - morn should be mourn; 8 - apon should be upon; 10 - anothers should be another's). Also, in the "flip", John's left hand is raised which is not accurate. Just wanted to make mention in case any others are wanting to use these pdfs. Again, I do so appreciate all you do to help in my teaching our young children. 😄

This is very helpful. I only have my one brain to work with(: So any help is appreciated. I will get those fixed.

I think I’ve folded the origami correctly however I’m not sure how to use it. I didn’t see instructions for that.

Your awesome as the years are hitting me I’m getting that way too, the good news I don’t have a guilty conscience because ive forgotten so much(:

Faith Song & Movement Activity

Sing the song, " Faith ." Have the kids stand up when they hear the word “faith.” (Use faith wheel as singing - see image below). Explain that we show our faith in Jesus Christ when we keep His commandments.

Read Romans 10:17 - "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Help the children make a list of some things Jesus wants them to do, like obeying their parents or telling the truth. (Use the faith play mat "Building My Faith" and add the strips to build your "ladder" of good works to heaven) and/or play the "Path of Faith" game. Testify that our faith in Jesus Christ can help us keep the commandments.

PATH OF FAITH

Make a path with string. Put things or pictures along the path that help show or grow faith such as scriptures, music (ipad or sheet music), etc. Ask how each object helps grow or show faith in Jesus Christ as the family walks the path.

WHAT YOU NEED:

A blindfold

HOW TO PLAY:

Faith is when we obey even when we cannot see the end. Faith is acting and believing that God will take care of us, even though we can’t see to what or where He is taking us.

Blindfold one of you kids. Spin them around a few times. Then, give the blindfolded child instructions where to walk as they make their way across the room. Give them instructions every once in a while so it looks like they might run into something, but when they get close have them turn and avoid running into anything.

The object here is to have everybody else watching be a little worried whether or not the one blindfolded is going to make it without falling down or running into something.

faith blindfold game object lesson

As your helper nears the other side of the room tell them that when you give the command you want them to sit down. They are not allowed to feel if there is anything to sit on, they just has to have faith and sit down.

As you are explaining this very quietly bring out a chair or stool and position it so they will be able to sit in it. Cue everyone else not to make any noise. Remember, when your helper started there was no chair to sit so they don't know if there will be a chair when they sit down. Have them sit down. When they are safely  seated, have them take off the blindfold.

Explain that just like your helper had to listen for instructions to know what to do that we have to do the same thing.

Trust, or faith, is not being able to see but trusting the One who can.

Faith Scripture Stories Coloring Pages - in the printables library

Objective - Kids learn about examples of lessons of faith from the scriptures and the lessons the stories teach.

For Young Kids: Let kids color the two free printable activity pages below as you share each of the scripture story examples.

scripture stories of faith kids coloring and activity lesson page

For Older Kids:

Faith chart printable - available  in the printables library under "Faith Scripture Stories."

As I think about this list, I find:

  • Faith is rooted in desire. These people chose to exercise faith because they had good desires.
  • There are many ways to show our faith. These can include patiently enduring afflictions, gathering with other people to discuss the gospel, preaching the gospel to nonbelievers, fasting, and praying for specific blessings.
  • People can exercise faith alone, in small groups, or in large groups.
  • For many of them, the blessings they sought were for other people, not for themselves.
  • Today, I will strive to follow these examples of faith from the Book of Mormon. I will strive to align my desires with God, I will pray for specific blessings, including blessings which benefit other people. And I will wait patiently until the blessings come.

David and Goliath -  1 Samuel 17:45-47

The Story of David & Goliath Teaches Me...

  • By faith we can do incredible things.
  • We can defeat our "Goliaths" (temptation), just as David slew Goliath.
  • Sometimes I face scary problems. When I ask God for help, He helps me be strong; God gives me the courage and strength to do hard things (see great and impossible things activity).
  • When God is for us, who can stand against us? (Isaiah 41:10)

Think about the hardest thing that you’ve ever had to do. Sometimes we make things more difficult for ourselves because we don’t prepare well for them. Before his battle with Goliath, David prayed to God for help. When the time came, he took exactly what he would need to defeat Goliath into the battle. The next time you face a serious challenge, take some time to pray to God for his help, perhaps even writing out your prayer, and then be prepared for what you must do.

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho - Deuteronomy 10; 31; 34; Joshua 1; 3–6; 10–11; 21; 24

When God led Joshua to Jericho, he led him to a city that could not be defeated. The walls of Jericho were built on a great sloping embankment. At the base of this embankment was a retaining wall 12-15 feet high. 46 feet above, at the top of the embankment was another wall 26 feet high and six feet thick. There simply was no way, humanly speaking, for Joshua and his men to gain access to the city of Jericho.

But God gave Joshua a pretty crazy battle plan! God told Joshua and his army to march around the city of Jericho for seven days. And then, after marching on the seventh day, for the army to blow their trumpets and shout in victory. At this, God promised the mighty walls of Jericho would collapse.

Do you think Joshua wondered why God would ask him to just march around the walls? Do you think he thought how in the world will this help us defeat Jericho? Just walking can't bring down the walls...?

Despite whatever Joshua didn't understand, and disregarding the skepticism of his fellows soldiers and the ridicule of Jericho’s inhabitants, Joshua believed God and obeyed Him in every command. He led God’s people on a seven day march. On the seventh day, Joshua and his men let out a cry and discovered firsthand the power of faith. Jericho’s walls collapsed.

The Story of Joshua & The Battle of Jericho teaches me...

  • God always fulfills His promises.
  • With God impossible things are possible.
  • If I obey God in all things, He will bless me.

Is there something God has asked you to do that you don't understand or that you don't want to do? Maybe forgiving someone even when they don't deserve it? (For young kids - maybe not fighting with your siblings and helping clean up when asked?) The next time you face a situation where God is asking or telling you to do something you don't understand, how can you be like Joshua?

Faith & Joshua Jericho Object Lesson

What does the word faith mean?  Let me explain with an example…

How many of you have ever flown on an airplane?

When you get onto the airplane do you know how to operate it in case of emergency?

No! You are putting your trust in the pilot and in the airplane.

Another way to say that is that you have faith in the pilot and the airplane to take you safely to your destination. So if we say that someone is faithful then we are saying that we can put our trust in them.

Let’s talk for a minute today about a group of people who put incredible trust in God...

Nephi and His Broken Bow

(Scripture Stories for Young Children images to go along with the story)

One day in the wilderness, Nephi’s hunting bow broke. His family was worried. They didn’t know how they would get food without it. Nephi had faith. He made a new bow and arrow. His father, Lehi, prayed for help.

They looked at the Liahona. It was a special compass the Lord gave them. When they kept the commandments, the Liahona showed them where to go. Nephi was able to find food for his family!

The Story of Nephi & The Bow Teaches Me...

  • When bad or sad things happen, I won’t give up!
  • I can pray to God for help. Heavenly Father will help me solve problems.
  • When I keep the commandment, the Lord will bless me. (D&C 82:10)
  • I must act on the help and inspiration I receive.

The next time something bad or sad happens, what can you do to be like Nephi?

Keep the faith; Go and Do.

Throughout the story of Lehi and his family, Nephi prays often and earnestly to God. When hardship strikes, his prayer is not “Bless me to  find a bow,” but rather, “What can I do to make a bow to hunt the game my family needs to survive?” This humble prayer gives Nephi the  answers he needs.

Praying alone is not enough; we must act on the inspiration we receive through our prayers. Instead of murmuring, Nephi simply went to work and made another bow. Murmuring wastes time, lengthens one’s journey, and hardens one’s heart. . . . God may not always stop bows from breaking, but he does help in the construction of new ones.

For four other lessons the story of Nephi and the bow teaches, see the full BYU Speech Here (IT'S AMAZING!!!)

As we pray, act upon the revelation we receive, counsel with our priesthood leaders, faithfully study the scriptures, feel gratitude in our circumstances, and expect miracles, we, like Nephi of old, will be able to make a new bow when ours inevitably breaks. In the language of the Doctrine and Covenants, we will be able to “come off conqueror.”

The Brother of Jared

Jared and his brother lived in Babel. Because most of the people there were wicked, the Lord punished them by making them unable to understand each other when they talked. But Jared and his brother and their families and friends were not wicked. They loved the Lord and obeyed Him. The Lord told the brother of Jared that He would lead them to a promised land.

They built eight boats for their trip. It was very dark inside the boats, so the brother of Jared took sixteen white stones to the top of a mountain and asked the Lord to touch them with His finger to make them shine. Because the brother of Jared had such great faith, when the Lord touched the stones, the brother of Jared saw Him.  The brother of Jared put two shining stones into each boat. They had light while they crossed the ocean to the promised land.

The Story of the Brother of Jared Teaches Me...

  • As we face problems in life that we can’t answer, we can turn to the Lord for help.
  • I must be open to learning and do my homework, THEN petition the Lord. (D&C 9:7)
  • Sometimes God will give us the answers and sometimes we have to find them for ourselves.*

The Brother of Jared studied the problem of light in the boat then presented the problem of light to God. The brother of Jared heated rock to make sixteen transparent stones, and then on Mount Shelem he asked the Lord for the part of the solution he could not provide: to make the stones emit light. But he doesn’t simply ask as a child might ask a hurried parent or a student might ask a teacher flitting from pupil to pupil. He takes time to plead for forgiveness. He acknowledges blessings. He proclaims faith in God’s power.

*In some cases, God will freely grant His children blessings or solutions, simply because they have the faith to ask (see Ether 2:19–21). In other situations the Lord requires initiative, creativity, and diligent striving on the part of those seeking blessings or solutions.

Great talk on the Brother of Jared HERE.

For teens and adults (see symbolism of the stones section) see talk HERE.

Glow-in-the-Dark Stones

[Idea credit: Ldsdaily.com]

Paint rocks and stones (that you find in your backyard or that you purchase from the store) with glow-in-the-dark paint. Take a permanent marker or paint to write moments of inspiration you want to remember. It could be a favorite scripture, a word that inspires you, or a goal you want to work on. They can inspire your family to remember how to find light in the darkness.

COME FOLLOW ME NEW TESTAMENT (PRIMARY & FAMILIES):

* Read Matthew 17:19–20 with the children. Invite them to take turns drawing big mountains and small seeds on the board. Explain that the mountains are like things that are hard for us to do. What are some things that can feel like mountains to us? Use this week’s activity pg. to help the children think about how faith can help them do things that God wants them to do.

*Place a picture of a mountain on one side of the room. Ask the children to name some things they can do to gain more faith in Jesus Christ. Let each child who suggests something move the mountain closer to the other side of the room. Read Matthew 17:19–20, and testify of the power of faith in your life.

* Sing together a song about faith, such as “Faith” (Children’s Songbook, 96–97). Give each child a seed to take home. Invite them to plant the seed and put it somewhere where they can watch it grow to help them remember to have faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Faith Action Poem (video coming...)

Faith Poem (vide coming...)

By Elsie Chamberlain Carroll

When I plant a little seed,

I know that the Lord’s power,

Working through the sun and rain,

Will produce a pretty flower.

When I go to sleep at night,

I know that I shall waken;

Although the night is dark and long,

My faith is never shaken.

Because I know that Christ arose,

Though He in death had lain,

So I know, too, that when I die,

I’ll surely live again.

Sing to the tune: Oh My Darlin' Clementine
