When most people think of tutoring, they imagine a student sitting at a desk with a tutor standing over them, correcting their work and explaining difficult concepts.

While this type of tutoring can be very effective, it’s not always the best way to help students learn and enjoy the process.

If you’re an online teacher or tutor, it’s important to find ways to make tutoring more enjoyable for your students. In this blog post, we will share some unique ideas for how to make tutoring fun and entertaining for your students!

How to Make Tutoring Fun for Online Students

Having a tutor can frequently feel like an unwelcome obligation for students, particularly when there are other activities that a student would rather be engaged in rather than having to take the time to sit still and learn something new.

Or worse, focus on a topic in which they’re struggling. The good news is that there are ways for both parents and teachers to make their lessons more fun for their students.

One of the great things about tutoring online is that you have a lot more freedom to be creative and make turning fun and more enjoyable for your students. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Start A Lesson Well

Start your lesson with a “Warm-Up Session.” Also known as an ice breaker, this is a great way to get your students engaged and excited about the lesson.

You can use this time to review concepts from prior lessons or play fun games. One example is to start with a quick “quiz show” where students compete to answer questions correctly.

Khan Academy isn't really just a tutoring company; it's meant to supplement a child's education, with curriculum materials designed to either bolster classroom lessons or teach something entirely new. There isn't any live or one-on-one instruction (just videos that students watch at their own pace), but the materials are 100% free.

Learn to Be

For those who balk at the high cost of online tutoring, Learn to Be is a nonprofit that offers free and low-cost services for students who need it. (You choose if you can pay.) The caveat: This isn't on-demand tutoring; you'll need to fill out an application, which has sections that parents, school teachers, and students need to complete, before starting.

Preply is a boon to students who want to learn or practice another language with a native speaker; it hosts tutors from all over the world who are fluent in Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, Hebrew, Urdu — you name it. Tutors are contractors who set their own rates, so the prices vary.

The Princeton Review

The Princeton Review acquired the popular Tutor.com , making it a one-stop shop for homework help, test prep, and tutoring — and it claims that more than 5,000 students take advantage every night. Most plans come with a better guarantee, and pricing starts at $40/month for one hour per month and goes up to $1,450 for 50 on-demand hours over six months (which divides out to $29/hour).

Revolution Prep

Revolution Prep boasts that its staff is made up of 100% full-time faculty — no side-hustlers here — who do more than 150 hours of training and development. (The site claims there are Jeopardy! champs and Ph.D.s in their ranks.) But you'll pay for their expertise: Private tutoring is $1,200 for 12 hours, and small-group test prep is $400 for 12 hours.

Skooli has a pay-as-you-go pricing plan of $0.82 per minute, which is good if you want to use a tutor every once in a while when you're stuck on a tricky homework question or want some last-minute study help; you're not locked into a monthly plan, and you can connect to tutors 24/7. The site has tutors for all subjects and grade levels, including ESL and business courses.

Smarthinking

Pearson's Smarthinking boasts that 90% of its tutors have advanced degrees in their subject areas, so they know their stuff. There are tutors for every subject, but writing is the emphasis — as are resume reviews and interview prep, when it comes time for your student to enter the workforce. Prices range from $25 for an essay or resume review to $125/month for four hours of online tutoring.

SpecialEdTutoring.com

Students with special needs require tutors who understand their learning styles. All of the this site's tutors have at least a Bachelor's Degree in special education, and the tutors find that the students do well with online tutoring because they're in a comfortable and familiar setting (ie, home). Rates start at $25/hour.

TutorEye offers tons of flexibility in how it offers its services: You can choose between a live study session with a whiteboard-enabled classroom help or written, step-by-step help — and you can decide if you want to commit to a monthly plan or just do pay-per-minute. The pay-as-you-go system costs $0.50 per minute, while monthly plans start at $50 for two hours.

TutorMe claims it only accepts 4% of the tutors who apply to work with the site, so students only receive the best instructors. Lessons take place in a virtual classroom with a whiteboard, text editor, audio/video chat, and screen-sharing capabilities, and afterwards the lessons are archived for later review. Prices range from $1/minute for quick homework help to $119/month for four hours of lessons.

#2 – StudyPoint

Our Verdict — Best Big Tutoring Company Price: $60-120/hour StudyPoint is a large test-prep company that keeps its rates lower than Princeton Review or Kaplan. While they do require basic qualifications for their tutors (2 years of experience and a college degree), it’s hard to know much about the tutor you’ll be matched with. You’ll also need to pay more for a more experienced tutor, so StudyPoint’s top rate of $120/hr runs on the more expensive side. While we like StudyPoint’s platform and their tutor qualifications, there’s likely to be a wide variance in tutro quality, since not all their tutors are from top schools. We’d suggest that families consider working with a Standard Tutor at PrepMaven , where fees start at $79/hour for Ivy-League tutors.

• StudyPoint is a good option for families who want to work with a large, established company at decent rates.
• Cost: $60-120/hr

#3 – Skooli

Our Verdict — Best Super-Quick Tutoring Price: $39–49/hour Skooli is a newer online tutoring platform and the only one we’ve found that offers tutoring charged by the minute. Families can purchase packs for 8, 16, or 32 hours, or purchase individual hours. Students can then use these hours in as little as 15-minute increments. This might be handy for students who want to ask a tutor quick questions, and who don’t care about developing a relationship with a consistent tutor. Tutors for Skooli have college degrees, but haven’t necessarily graduated from a top-tier school. It’s not possible to see more details about individual tutors until after giving credit card details. Their online interface is slick and modern, although according to our inside sources it crashes frequently.

• Students who want to work with a tutor to answer quick questions (sessions as short as 15 minutes).
• Cost: $1248 for 32 hours ($39/hr), $672 for 16 hours ($42/hr), $352 per 8 hours ($44/hr), or $49/hour for individual hours, billed by the minute ($0.82/minute, minimum 15 minutes)

#4 – Wyzant

Our Verdict — Alternative for Families on a Budget Price: $20–600/hour There are plenty of large platforms with large stables of part-time tutors and coaches available to work with students. Wyzant is one of the largest such platforms, with more than 65,000 tutors providing services through their website. Students and families can pick individual tutors to work with from their roster and arrange tutoring services directly. One benefit of this model is that tutors can set their own rates, which vary hugely. Families on a budget can find online writing tutors as low as $20 per hour. However, these tutors might not have any teaching experience or training, and they may not have graduated from a top school. Some tutors on Wyzant with more qualifications may have much higher rates — as high as $600 per hour!

Our Verdict — Best Free Tutoring (for qualifying families) Price: free (or voluntary contribution of $9–30 per month) Learn to Be is a fantastic non-profit organization improving education for underserved youth in the US. Students work with the same tutor consistently, which allows them to build a strong relationship and allows for mentoring as well as learning. Students working with Learn to Be have seen an average increase in test scores of 15.8% and an average GPA increase of 1.6 — nearly two full letter grades (for example from a C to an A-)! Tutors are volunteers who are passionate about educational equity, and range from current high school and college students to professionals or retirees. The program works primarily with foster youth, homeless youth, and other lower-income families. Possible qualifications for free tutoring with Learn to Be include: student attends a Title 1 school, receives free or reduced lunch at school, comes from a single-parent home, is a foster child, is homeless, or qualifies for food stamps. It’s possible to work with a Spanish-speaking tutor through Learn to Be.

Our Verdict — Best Free Peer Math Tutoring Price: free While Learn to Be provides free or low-cost tutoring to only qualifying families, Schoolhouse is free and available to any student age 13+. Created by Sal Khan, who is also the founder of well-known educational non-profit Khan Academy , Schoolhouse is an innovative platform for peer tutoring. Students who are strong in math can take a short test to check their knowledge. Qualified students can then volunteer to host small-group tutoring sessions online to help their peers who might be struggling. Schoolhouse’s peer tutoring is designed to reinforce and practice what students are learning in school. There’s no adult or experienced instructor leading the tutoring sessions, and all sessions are in groups open to any student worldwide to join, so we wouldn’t recommend it for students who need targeted help learning specific math concepts. However, it can be a fun way for students to practice math alongside their peers.

• Students age 13+ who want to practice math problems in a group with their peers.
• Tutor qualifications: current students age 13+ — students take a quiz to prove their knowledge but no other required qualifications
• Completely free and open to any student worldwide age 13+
• Students can work with their student peers , which some might find more approachable

Best of the Rest for Online Tutoring

#7 – princeton review / tutor.com.

Our Verdict — Disappointing Quality from Test-Prep Giant Price : lower-quality instant tutoring at $29–35/hour, minimum package $350; monthly subscription instant tutoring at $36–40/hour Back in 2014, Tutor.com acquired the well-known test-prep company The Princeton Review. (Note that the Princeton Review has no connection to Princeton University.) They now offer subject-area tutoring in over 80 different academic areas, including math. The range of tutoring options is a little confusing, but it basically breaks down to two different models: families can choose one-off tutoring packages of 10–50 “instant tutoring” hours that can be used over a six-month period, or a monthly subscription for 1–5 instant tutoring hours each month. Tutors are available 24/7 for instant sessions. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the quality of this offering from The Princeton Review. In contrast to their operations for standardized test prep (like SAT and ACT prep ), their platform for subject-area tutoring does not provide instructors with training, so there’s very little consistency. Tutors are also capped at 2 or 3 sessions per day, so they’re by design part-time instructors who are teaching a little on the side. While The Princeton Review / Tutor.com claims to count Ivy grads and experts with advanced degrees among their tutors, we found this to be misleading. Most of their tutors have only a BA, and most have graduated from local schools that are not even in the top 200 universities. Pay for tutors is minimum wage, so it’s difficult for them to attract good teaching talent. Surprisingly for The Princeton Review, their subject-area tutoring is a tutoring marketplace platform (similar to Wyzant ). Families select individual tutors to work with based on their bios and arrange the tutoring sessions individually. For us, this obviates the point of working with a large company like Princeton Review, where in theory the advantage is quality control and a standard curriculum, even if it comes with a more corporate feel. With this marketplace model, tutor quality and qualifications vary considerably, especially given that tutors do not receive any training or teaching materials.

• Cost: Homework Help packages that can be used over a period of 6 months: $350 for 10 hours ($35/hr), $950 for 30 hours ($32/hr), or $1499.99 for 50 hours ($29/hr); Homework Help tutoring subscriptions: $40 for 1 hour each month, $115 for 3 hours each month ($38/hr), or $180 for 5 hours each month ($36/hr)
• Reasonable pricing for tutoring and a range of payment models
• Tutors are available 24/7 for instant Homework Help packages
• Tutor qualifications vary — most are from local or state schools, not competitive colleges
• Online platform is buggy and crashes frequently
• Challenging for them to attract good teaching talent as pay is minimum wage
• Low quality of teaching , surprising for a big-name player in test prep

#8 – ArborBridge

Our Verdict: Pricey Service with Mystery Tutors Price: $165+/hour, minimum package $2400 for 15 hours Featuring crisp, minimalist visuals and a younger team, ArborBridge calls itself “the next generation of test prep.” They’ve always been remote and online, so they haven’t suffered the growing pains with the shift to online learning that many competitors with outdated platforms (like Pearson and Princeton Review ) have experienced. That said, their tutoring is quite expensive! Their rate is always at least $160 per hour, and the minimum package is a hefty $2400 for 15 hours of tutoring. They also advertise a “concierge” tutoring service with a more customized experience — price upon request. Is it worth the price? We’re not so sure. ArborBridge claims to have hired the “best” tutors but they do not list any specific qualifications for their tutors or provide any bios for their tutor roster. On their (slightly-defunct) Instagram page they have provided some fun facts about a few of their tutors, but they don’t list any educational background, years of experience, or relevant professional credentials, just favorite foods and television shows. There’s no indication that their tutors have graduated from top colleges, have teaching experience, or any other relevant qualifications — unlike services like PrepMaven or Tutoring Service of New York that only hire Ivy-League tutors. In fact, our sources have mentioned that their tutors don’t receive much training prior to teaching. They also, unlike the Princeton Review, don’t offer any guarantees for raising grades or scores. In the end, we’re not sure why ArborBridge has such high prices without offering particularly high-quality tutoring in return. Their website looks nice, though!

• Cost: $160/hour, minimum package is $2400 for 15 hours (+ 1 bonus hour); $4800 for 30 hours (+ 3 bonus hours); $7200 for 45 hours (+ 6 bonus hours) — or “concierge tutoring” with “highest level of hands-on care,” price upon request
• Tutor qualifications: unknown
• Known for good customer service
• Younger, more modern tutoring service that’s built with technology from the get-go
• Expensive , with a minimum cost of $2400 for 15 hours of tutoring
• No information about tutor qualifications provided
• No guarantees for grade or score raises
• Seems more design than substance

#9 – Learner

Our Verdict — Tutoring that Includes ESL Learners Price: $55–80/hour, minimum $400 package Learner is another newer online tutoring platform. Unlike many of the other services on this list, Learner also provides tutoring services to adults, especially for non-native English speakers. While they advertise that their tutors have degrees from “top universities,” it seems that the only necessary qualification for tutors at Learner is a college degree (not just from top schools). We found their sign-up sequence to be frustrating. New clients start by answering a series of questions about their students. While it repeatedly seems like they’ll show a selection of tutors that may be a match, this is a bait-and-switch tactic, and they never display any actual tutor profiles. Instead, new clients must first make a payment before they can view any tutor details. Learner has a “satisfaction guarantee,” which simply means that they’ll allow families to request a switch to another tutor if it’s not a good fit. Their rates are on the pricier side for “average” tutors who do not have teaching experience or degrees from elite universities.

• Cost: $400 for 5 hours ($80/hour), $700 for 10 hours ($70/hour), $1200 for 20 hours ($60/hour), or $1650 for 30 hours ($55/hour)
• Explicitly offers tutoring for ESL learners
• No specific tutor qualifications beyond a college degree

#10 – Revolution Prep

Our Verdict — High Rates Price: $132/hour, minimum $1578 for 12 hours Revolution Prep is a larger platform providing online tutoring with a focus on interactive learning. Revolution Prep is a larger platform providing online tutoring with a focus on interactive learning. While they used to offer more affordable small-group classes, they no longer do so for math tutoring.. Their individual tutoring rate of $132/hour is quite high, especially given the backgrounds of their instructors. While we like that all of their tutors are full-time staff, versus tutoring part-time alongside another career, their tutors do not have any other specific qualifications. These rates are comparable or higher than other services that provide more customized learning with Ivy-League tutors, like PrepMaven or select tutors on Wyzant..

• Cost: individual tutoring $132/hour, minimum $1578 for 12 hours
• Tutor qualifications: none specified
• All tutors are full-time staff
• Small-group tutoring provides lower prices

#11 – Tutoring Service of New York

Our Verdict — New Service with Higher Minimum Package Price: $112–160/hour ($1200 5-session minimum) Founded by a former tutor with the now-defunct Ivy Global tutoring service, the new Tutoring Service of New York offers subject-area tutoring online. Most of their tutors are current graduate students, many at Columbia University and NYU. The higher prices of the Tutoring Service of New York reflect the more elite educational background of the tutors. However, their minimum of $1200 for at least 5 sessions is high, especially since many other services have smaller minimum packages (compare $510 minimum at PrepMaven or $450 minimum at The Princeton Review ), or else allow families to purchase one-off tutoring sessions ( Pearson , Skooli , and others).

• Cost: $1200 for five 90-minute sessions; $2000 for 10 sessions; $2700 for 16 sessions
• Tutor qualifications:  college graduates, mostly current graduate students at Columbia or NYU

#12 – Mathnasium

Our Verdict — Tutoring Franchise to Help with Math Homework Price: varies (franchise), typically $200–425/month Math is one of the most important core subjects, and so it’s not surprising that there are learning programs devoted specifically to math. Mathnasium is a franchise with locations throughout the US and even internationally. As their name might suggest, they’re focused on fostering math skills only. Pricing varies by franchise location and by grade level, but most Mathnasium centers offer a flat monthly fee that allows students to attend math tutoring sessions regularly (whether online or in person), usually two or three times per week. While other programs might focus on drills and exercises, Mathnasium typically focuses on helping students with their math homework and other math assignments. Mathnasium does not assign homework or create customized curricula for students. One significant downside of Mathnasium’s approach is that students do not necessarily get to work with the same tutor each time. This disrupts continuity and makes it harder for students to learn, since a good tutor will track students’ progress over time and create assignments that target the needs of each individual student. There are also no specific qualifications for math tutors, so there’s no guarantee that the tutors are great teachers or have a high level of expertise in math. Since each of the Mathnasium centers is locally owned and operated, the customer service experience can vary significantly.

#13 – Kumon

Our Verdict — Tutoring Franchise Drilling Math and Reading Basics Price: varies (franchise), typically $100–200/month Kumon is an international tutoring franchise that focuses on reaching math and reading through rote memorization. Founded by Toru Kumon in Japan in 1958, Kumon centers all follow the same learning approach based on worksheets that very gradually increase in difficulty. Students enrolled in Kumon’s program begin with a diagnostic assessment for math and reading comprehension skills. They are then usually placed in a level lower than where they scored , so that they can reinforce existing skills with additional practice. However, this also means that students have to spend time on material that they have already learned. Students at Kumon are not able to bring in homework or material from their current classes for additional help. Instead, all Kumon sessions focus on the rigid Kumon material. The goal of the Kumon Method  is “to teach students to learn independently,” and so instructors observe students as they complete worksheets and provide guidance. Students are also assigned homework from Kumon, in order to continue practicing at home. Students typically receive about 30 minutes of homework per day. Since each of the Kumon centers is locally owned and operated, the customer service experience can vary significantly. Pricing also varies by location, but runs typically about $100–200 per month. Students are encouraged to attend Kumon sessions twice per week.

#14 – Varsity Tutors

Our Verdict — Uneven Quality Without Budget Pricing Price: $70-100/hour Varsity Tutors is an enormous tutoring platform offering online instruction in all academic subjects and test prep, including writing. These days their marketing has been ubiquitous! However, Varsity Tutors’ size has many downsides — most notably, very uneven quality of teaching. Tutors at Varsity need only a high school degree, and there is no requirement for tutors to have a college degree or teaching experience, let alone a top-tier educational background or professional writing credentials. Tutors can join the Varsity team very quickly and are paid lower rates than nearly any other tutoring company (just $12–15 for sessions that cost families up to $95), so it’s difficult for Varsity to attract and retain good talent. Lucky families might get assigned a good tutor, but that’s not at all assured. Varsity Tutors also does not provide any tutor materials, curriculum, or training, so it’s up to individual tutors to create everything from scratch, contributing further to the unevenness of quality. With rates higher than the competition with similar types of tutors (no specific qualifications beyond a college degree), Varsity is significantly overpriced. We’d recommend that families either consider a more budget-friendly option that would offer the same quality as Varsity in the $30–40/hour price range, or else consider a service like PrepMaven (starting at $79/hour) or Tutoring Service of New York (starting at $112/hour) that pairs students with highly-qualified tutors with advanced degrees and Ivy-League backgrounds.

Our Verdict — Lower-Cost Tutoring Marketplace Platform Price: $5–40/hour Preply is a lower-cost marketplace platform. It’s significantly smaller than Wyzant . Among those tutors listed, most don’t have high educational backgrounds. Preply is a more international platform, and some of the tutors are from other countries or located outside the US. One benefit of Preply’s platform is that rates are very low, ranging from $5/hour to $40/hour. These rates are actually comparable or higher than the pay rates for most of the larger platforms on our list (like Pearson , The Princeton Review , Varsity Tutors , and TutaPoint ), so don’t necessarily take these numbers on their own as indications of lower quality — just that tutors are earning a larger share. We should note that they’ve pivoted several times in the past few years, so their service may have changed from what families have read. Whereas previously (first as InstaEDU, then as Chegg Tutors) Chegg offered live tutoring instruction online, Chegg no longer offers one-on-one tutoring . Instead, they now offer two subscription levels that allow students to view instructional videos, access answer keys for common textbooks, and receive asynchronous written feedback to homework questions. These questions are primarily answered by “subject matter experts” located in India. Their “Chegg Study Pack” includes the option to submit papers for limited written feedback with a 48-hour turnaround time. Students can submit up to 15 short papers per month, up to 3000 words each (about 6 pages double-spaced). That said, this is not the same as active writing tutoring with live discussion and exercises directly with a tutor. The written feedback provided by Chegg’s essay review service is limited. Moreover, the essay reviews are done by different tutors every time, so there’s no opportunity to grow through working with one tutor consistently. This service might work for students who want merely a quick check of their grammar or other small details on school assignments and don’t care about long-term improvements as a writer. Meanwhile, ACT scores range from 2 to 36, and the average ACT score at the Ivy League is between 33 and 35 .

While a great SAT or ACT score alone won’t get you into the Ivy League or another top-tier university, it’s very hard to get into a top-tier school without strong scores on the SAT or ACT .

The rapid shift to remote teaching and learning meant that many instructors reimagined their assessment practices. Whether adapting existing assignments or creatively designing new opportunities for their students to learn, instructors focused on helping students make meaning and demonstrate their learning outside of the traditional, face-to-face classroom setting. Traditional assessments tend to reveal whether students can recognize, recall, or replicate what was learned out of context, and tend to focus on students providing correct responses (Wiggins, 1990). In contrast, authentic assignments, which are course assessments, engage students in higher order thinking, as they grapple with real or simulated challenges that help them prepare for their professional lives, and draw on the course knowledge learned and the skills acquired to create justifiable answers, performances or products (Wiggins, 1990). An authentic assessment provides opportunities for students to practice, consult resources, learn from feedback, and refine their performances and products accordingly (Wiggins 1990, 1998, 2014). 

Authentic assignments ask students to “do” the subject with an audience in mind and apply their learning in a new situation. Examples of authentic assignments include asking students to: 

• Write for a real audience (e.g., a memo, a policy brief, letter to the editor, a grant proposal, reports, building a website) and/or publication;
• Solve problem sets that have real world application; 
• Design projects that address a real world problem; 
• Engage in a community-partnered research project;
• Create an exhibit, performance, or conference presentation ;
• Compile and reflect on their work through a portfolio/e-portfolio.

Noteworthy elements of authentic designs are that instructors scaffold the assignment, and play an active role in preparing students for the tasks assigned, while students are intentionally asked to reflect on the process and product of their work thus building their metacognitive skills (Herrington and Oliver, 2000; Ashford-Rowe, Herrington and Brown, 2013; Frey, Schmitt, and Allen, 2012). 

It’s worth noting here that authentic assessments can initially be time consuming to design, implement, and grade. They are critiqued for being challenging to use across course contexts and for grading reliability issues (Maclellan, 2004). Despite these challenges, authentic assessments are recognized as beneficial to student learning (Svinicki, 2004) as they are learner-centered (Weimer, 2013), promote academic integrity (McLaughlin, L. and Ricevuto, 2021; Sotiriadou et al., 2019; Schroeder, 2021) and motivate students to learn (Ambrose et al., 2010). The Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning is always available to consult with faculty who are considering authentic assessment designs and to discuss challenges and affordances.   

Examples from the Columbia University Classroom 

Columbia instructors have experimented with alternative ways of assessing student learning from oral exams to technology-enhanced assignments. Below are a few examples of authentic assignments in various teaching contexts across Columbia University. 

• E-portfolios: Statia Cook shares her experiences with an ePorfolio assignment in her co-taught Frontiers of Science course (a submission to the Voices of Hybrid and Online Teaching and Learning initiative); CUIMC use of ePortfolios ;
• Case studies: Columbia instructors have engaged their students in authentic ways through case studies drawing on the Case Consortium at Columbia University. Read and watch a faculty spotlight to learn how Professor Mary Ann Price uses the case method to place pre-med students in real-life scenarios;
• Simulations: students at CUIMC engage in simulations to develop their professional skills in The Mary & Michael Jaharis Simulation Center in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Helene Fuld Health Trust Simulation Center in the Columbia School of Nursing; 
• Experiential learning: instructors have drawn on New York City as a learning laboratory such as Barnard’s NYC as Lab webpage which highlights courses that engage students in NYC;
• Design projects that address real world problems: Yevgeniy Yesilevskiy on the Engineering design projects completed using lab kits during remote learning. Watch Dr. Yesilevskiy talk about his teaching and read the Columbia News article . 
• Writing assignments: Lia Marshall and her teaching associate Aparna Balasundaram reflect on their “non-disposable or renewable assignments” to prepare social work students for their professional lives as they write for a real audience; and Hannah Weaver spoke about a sandbox assignment used in her Core Literature Humanities course at the 2021 Celebration of Teaching and Learning Symposium . ​Tips for Designing Assignments for Learning

While designing an effective authentic assignment may seem like a daunting task, the following tips can be used as a starting point. See the Resources section for frameworks and tools that may be useful in this effort.  

Align the assignment with your course learning objectives 

Identify the kind of thinking that is important in your course, the knowledge students will apply, and the skills they will practice using through the assignment. What kind of thinking will students be asked to do for the assignment? What will students learn by completing this assignment? How will the assignment help students achieve the desired course learning outcomes? Identify an authentic meaning-making task

For meaning-making to occur, students need to understand the relevance of the assignment to the course and beyond (Ambrose et al., 2010). To Bean (2011) a “meaning-making” or “meaning-constructing” task has two dimensions: 1) it presents students with an authentic disciplinary problem or asks students to formulate their own problems, both of which engage them in active critical thinking, and 2) the problem is placed in “a context that gives students a role or purpose, a targeted audience, and a genre.” (Bean, 2011: 97-98). 

An authentic task gives students a realistic challenge to grapple with, a role to take on that allows them to “rehearse for the complex ambiguities” of life, provides resources and supports to draw on, and requires students to justify their work and the process they used to inform their solution (Wiggins, 1990). Note that if students find an assignment interesting or relevant, they will see value in completing it. 

Consider the kind of activities in the real world that use the knowledge and skills that are the focus of your course. How is this knowledge and these skills applied to answer real-world questions to solve real-world problems? (Herrington et al., 2010: 22). What do professionals or academics in your discipline do on a regular basis? What does it mean to think like a biologist, statistician, historian, social scientist? How might your assignment ask students to draw on current events, issues, or problems that relate to the course and are of interest to them? How might your assignment tap into student motivation and engage them in the kinds of thinking they can apply to better understand the world around them? (Ambrose et al., 2010). 

Determine the evaluation criteria and create a rubric

To ensure equitable and consistent grading of assignments across students, make transparent the criteria you will use to evaluate student work. The criteria should focus on the knowledge and skills that are central to the assignment. Build on the criteria identified, create a rubric that makes explicit the expectations of deliverables and share this rubric with your students so they can use it as they work on the assignment. Build in metacognition

Ask students to reflect on what and how they learned from the assignment. Help students uncover personal relevance of the assignment, find intrinsic value in their work, and deepen their motivation by asking them to reflect on their process and their assignment deliverable. Sample prompts might include: what did you learn from this assignment? How might you draw on the knowledge and skills you used on this assignment in the future? See Ambrose et al., 2010 for more strategies that support motivation and the CTL’s resource on Metacognition ). 

Provide students with opportunities to practice

Design your assignment to be a learning experience and prepare students for success on the assignment. If students can reasonably expect to be successful on an assignment when they put in the required effort ,with the support and guidance of the instructor, they are more likely to engage in the behaviors necessary for learning (Ambrose et al., 2010). Ensure student success by actively teaching the knowledge and skills of the course (e.g., how to problem solve, how to write for a particular audience), modeling the desired thinking, and creating learning activities that build up to a graded assignment. Provide opportunities for students to practice using the knowledge and skills they will need for the assignment, whether through low-stakes in-class activities or homework activities that include opportunities to receive and incorporate formative feedback. Communicate about the assignment 

Share the purpose, task, audience, expectations, and criteria for the assignment. Students may have expectations about assessments and how they will be graded that is informed by their prior experiences completing high-stakes assessments, so be transparent. Tell your students why you are asking them to do this assignment, what skills they will be using, how it aligns with the course learning outcomes, and why it is relevant to their learning and their professional lives (i.e., how practitioners / professionals use the knowledge and skills in your course in real world contexts and for what purposes). Finally, verify that students understand what they need to do to complete the assignment. This can be done by asking students to respond to poll questions about different parts of the assignment, a “scavenger hunt” of the assignment instructions–giving students questions to answer about the assignment and having them work in small groups to answer the questions, or by having students share back what they think is expected of them.

Plan to iterate and to keep the focus on learning 

Draw on multiple sources of data to help make decisions about what changes are needed to the assignment, the assignment instructions, and/or rubric to ensure that it contributes to student learning. Explore assignment performance data. As Deandra Little reminds us: “a really good assignment, which is a really good assessment, also teaches you something or tells the instructor something. As much as it tells you what students are learning, it’s also telling you what they aren’t learning.” ( Teaching in Higher Ed podcast episode 337 ). Assignment bottlenecks–where students get stuck or struggle–can be good indicators that students need further support or opportunities to practice prior to completing an assignment. This awareness can inform teaching decisions. 

Triangulate the performance data by collecting student feedback, and noting your own reflections about what worked well and what did not. Revise the assignment instructions, rubric, and teaching practices accordingly. Consider how you might better align your assignment with your course objectives and/or provide more opportunities for students to practice using the knowledge and skills that they will rely on for the assignment. Additionally, keep in mind societal, disciplinary, and technological changes as you tweak your assignments for future use. 

Now is a great time to reflect on your practices and experiences with assignment design and think critically about your approach. Take a closer look at an existing assignment. Questions to consider include: What is this assignment meant to do? What purpose does it serve? Why do you ask students to do this assignment? How are they prepared to complete the assignment? Does the assignment assess the kind of learning that you really want? What would help students learn from this assignment?

Each emphasizes the importance of articulating to students the purpose of the assignment or activity, the what and how of the task, and specifying the criteria that will be used to assess students. 

Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) offers VALUE ADD (Assignment Design and Diagnostic) tools ( https://www.aacu.org/value-add-tools ) to help with the creation of clear and effective assignments that align with the desired learning outcomes and associated VALUE rubrics (Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education). VALUE ADD encourages instructors to explicitly state assignment information such as the purpose of the assignment, what skills students will be using, how it aligns with course learning outcomes, the assignment type, the audience and context for the assignment, clear evaluation criteria, desired formatting, and expectations for completion whether individual or in a group.

Villarroel et al. (2017) propose a blueprint for building authentic assessments which includes four steps: 1) consider the workplace context, 2) design the authentic assessment; 3) learn and apply standards for judgement; and 4) give feedback.

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.  

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school. 

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects. 

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

• Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services) 
• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers. 

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

• Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want 
• Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help 

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help. 

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter! 

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!  

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

• Best for: Science homework help
• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded. 

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.  

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college. 

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help. 

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option. 

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming 

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up. 

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service! 

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. 

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating. 

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Writing and Humanities Tutoring

The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University serves the students of SHSU in any of their written academic endeavors. Our goal is to help students become better writers and to develop more confidence in their writing abilities.

ASC tutors provide one-on-one and small group instruction for writing and humanities subjects. We help students on any writing assignments ranging from English composition essays to science lab reports and anything in between. We help students learn preparatory prewriting, revising, and editing skills by working with them on the writing tasks they bring in.

Students can schedule online and on-campus writing tutoring appointments using Campus Connect . Online appointments are conducted using Zoom and scheduled 1 hour in advance, and on-campus appointments are conducted face-to-face in the main floor (2nd floor) of the Newton Gresham Library in Huntsville. Students of any classification at Sam Houston State University can use this service to receive help on any writing or humanities-based assignment or project. Students will work one-on-one with an Academic Success Center Writing and Humanities Peer Tutor in order to identify areas of concern and learn how to address them for current and subsequent papers. Our tutors are able to assist with grammar, mechanics, formatting (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.), flow, academic voice, and other writing-related revision concerns.

Our tutors will not catch every mistake on your paper. Instead, their objective is to work with you to teach you the skills necessary to address concerns found in your paper or project on your own. The ASC provides online tutoring for mathematics and the mathematics portions of STEM courses via the Ava Lovelace Online Tutoring (A.L.O.T.). This service is designed to mirror our usual face-to-face sessions, with the goal of providing an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all participants. Go to https://online.shsu.edu/campus/ , log into blackboard and follow these steps to gain access to a tutoring session.

• World Languages and Culture Tutoring

The Academic Success Center at Sam Houston State University values and understands the importance of social impact. As a result of that commitment, we are now expanding our services beyond the traditional subjects of Math, Sciences and Writing.

Moscow District and Curriculum

Moscow School District expects students to enter each new grade having mastered the skills learned in the previous grade and having the ability to apply those skills to the skills being learned in subsequent years. In English Language Arts (ELA), the curriculum is based on 6 standards: Reading Process, Comprehension/Interpretation, Writing Process, Writing Applications, Writing Components and Communication. There are four standards that form the math curriculum: Number and Operation, Concepts and Principles of Measurement, Concepts and Language of Algebra and Functions, Concepts and Principles of Geometry, and Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Moscow District Curriculum

For ELA, decoding skills begin in first grade. As students learn to decode, they build up their fluency, which is reading speed. Grammar skills are introduced in second grade. New third grade skills include the study of spelling patterns, the use of context clues to read new words and the reading of chapter books. Fourth through sixth graders learn the meaning of common Greek and Latin root words and apply that knowledge to decode and define complex words, read larger, more difficult literature, and textbooks on their own. By the seventh grade, students’ vocabulary has grown to include idioms and figurative language.

These skills are reviewed and strengthened in grades 8 through 12. They read a wider variety of texts which include classic literature, contemporary literature, periodicals, reference books, poetry and the Internet. Students progress through the 5 steps of writing: prewrite, write, edit, revise and publish, to produce a variety of technical and creative texts. They write and respond to a variety of texts, citing references where required.

Can you see edited changes made to an assignment after its handed in

I handed in the word document assignment before the due date but edited it without needed to unsubmit it. When my teacher goes to mark my assignment will she be able to see the changes I have made or will she only be able to see the what i wrote when i handed it in or can she see continuous changes i make to it.

New drawing capabilities in Adobe Express provide a digital canvas for educators and students who want to elevate their assignments with our collection of expressive brushes. You can create a blank  Drawing  or select from a set of education-oriented  Drawing worksheet  templates. 

Try it in the app Draw with brushes in a few simple steps.

Create a drawing

On the Adobe Express homepage, navigate to the plus    icon, search  Drawing , and then select Drawing .

Use the Size slider to adjust the size of the brush.

Select Colors for your brush. You can select  More colors  to add a custom color.

Within the More colors panel, use the eyedropper     tool to select any color from the page for your brush color. You can also use this tool to pull colors from applications and windows outside of Adobe Express.

Select a brush style from the Basic , Multicolor , Art supplies , or Decorative options within the Brush panel, and then select View all to see all available brushes.

Use the brush on your canvas to create a drawing.

Select Download to save a PNG of your drawing.

Use a Drawing worksheet

On the Adobe Express homepage, navigate to the plus    icon, search Drawing worksheet , and then select Drawing worksheet .

Select Templates , browse the available drawing worksheets, and select one.

Select Brush . Use the Size slider to adjust the brush size.

Apply brush strokes to the blank areas of the template. Your brush marks automatically stay inside the lines, even if your brush goes outside the lines.

Select Download to save a PNG of your worksheet.

Where are my Adobe Express drawings saved?

To access your drawings, go to Your stuff  in the left panel on the Adobe Express homepage and select Files .

How many Adobe Express drawing templates are available? 

You can explore 100+ free drawing templates to kickstart your imagination.

What devices and browsers are supported? 

Drawing in Adobe Express is supported on Chromebooks and on Chrome and Edge desktop browsers. We’re working on support for additional browsers and devices.

Can I draw on any Adobe Express template?

Right now, you can only draw on specific drawing worksheets or a blank canvas, but we're working on integrating drawing capabilities with all Adobe Express templates. In the meantime, you can download a PNG of your artwork and upload the image to any template.

Does drawing in Express work with learning management systems?

Drawing in Express is integrated with Canvas and will soon work with Google Classroom. Read more about Adobe Express for Education .

Can I use this feature in incognito mode on a browser?

The best experience when using Drawing is to avoid using the feature in incognito mode to prevent slow speed.

Managing Your ISC2 CPE Credits and Activities

Becoming a cybersecurity professional requires a dedication to life-long learning, as threats, vulnerabilities and best practices are constantly evolving. Maintaining your ISC2 certification – from CC to CISSP – requires earning continuing professional education (CPE) credits.

Depending on which certification you hold – or if you’re an Associate of ISC2 – the number of CPE credits you need to earn will vary. For associates, the requirement is 15 credits per year. For all certifications, CPE activities must be completed during your three-year certification cycle. ISC2 provides annual recommendations in our Certification Maintenance Handbook , to maintain a healthy balance between your professional development, day job and your personal life.

Earning CPE credits

The general rule of CPE credits is that 1 hour of activity = 1 credit. If you’re participating in an activity through ISC2 directly – like attending Security Congress , taking a Skill-Builder or doing a JTA survey – your activity will be submitted on your behalf to your CPE Portal. Depending on the activity, the CPE credit will be awarded between one week and one month after you complete the activity. You can log into your ISC2 member account and visit https://cpe.isc2.org to check your CPE progress. We’ve also published a video on how to access the CPE portal that you can view to follow along with the steps. As a reminder, CPE credits are only submitted on your behalf if you are in your cycle, or within your 90-day grace period. If you’ve let your certification, or associate status, lapse, CPE activity will not upload automatically. You will need to provide that information manually, but any activity from within your cycle – as well as the 90-day grace period – is valid for CPE credit, even if your account is in suspension.

Using the ISC2 CPE portal

For activities not submitted on your behalf by ISC2, you’ll need to use the CPE Portal to upload them. The first step when submitting CPE activities is to select which type of credit you are applying for. There are two types of CPE credits: Group A and Group B.

Group A relates to the domains of your certification and can include reading a whitepaper on AI security or watching a webinar on zero trust. You’ll be required to provide supporting documentation of your activity and summarize your learning. Watch our quick video on how to submit Group A CPE credits.

When submitting Group A activity, you’ll select the relevant domain of your certification. You can select more than one domain from more than one certification, if applicable. If you don’t select a domain for your Group A activity, the entry will remain in the draft status, as this is a required field.

Group B activities are those that are not related to the technical domains of your certification, but rather activities that grow your general professional skills. This can include a toastmaster's course or reading a book on leadership tactics. See how to submit Group B CPE credits . If you hold the CC, or are an Associate of ISC2, you do not need to earn Group B CPE credits.

Delaware Student of the Week is a future educator within Middletown High

And then there was another student to spotlight.

Delaware Online/The News Journal is running a new initiative to recognize achievements of high school students across the state through reader voting. This "Delaware Student of the Week" honor looks to highlight academic excellence, extracurricular activities, volunteerism, perseverance and more attributes that make up the lives of so many young scholars.

School principals and other educators sent in nominations — while readers, like you, handled the rest. So in this round, who is our Delaware Student of the Week?

That's Kennedi Hutchinson, of Middletown High , claiming just over 49% of the vote this week.

This senior is used to being a leader. Not only in the Teacher Academy Pathway — but leading several student groups, like the Black Student Union and the Best Buddies program. That list continues, as her nominator said she's also a peer tutor, cheerleader and Special Olympics volunteer.

And, this daughter of an educator hopes to become a future teacher herself. Hutchinson is well on her way, looking toward graduation with completed observations at Brick Mill Early Childhood Center as part of her capstone project, according to her nominator.

Other students honored this week were Mariah Maddox, Woodbridge High; Erika Ayala-Rivera, William Penn High; and Abigail "Abby" Ehemann, of St. Mark's High.

Garki, Abuja - The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) has vowed to take legal action against any individual, group, or organisation, caught using its logo "without authorisation".

In its latest weekly bulletin seen by Legit.ng , JAMB said it views unapproved usage of its logo as serious misconduct and an infraction against its corporate well-being, stating that henceforth, any infringement of its logo could attract legal action.

Legit.ng understands that the threat of legal action may not be unconnected with the "unwholesome activities" of some tutorial centres, coaching outfits, schools, among others, who reportedly developed the habit of using JAMB's logo to justify the alleged false claims of scoring high marks in the just-released Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) 2024 by their students.

JAMB sets up monitoring team

The board stated that by infusing its logo into “unsavoury claims”, a toga of originality and genuineness is conferred on “their unholy ventures”, thereby deceiving unsuspecting members of the public.

JAMB, therefore, warned that as ignorance is not an excuse in the eye of the law, perpetrators should desist from this “ignoble act” or face the unpalatable consequences of their actions.

Already, it is understood that JAMB has established a monitoring team to identify these alleged culpable individuals or schools towards handing them over to the police and other security agencies for prosecution.

JAMB laments cases of unverified UTME candidates

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that JAMB described the multiple cases of unverified candidates in the 2024 UTME as worrisome.

JAMB said it noticed the challenge despite measures put in place to checkmate the phenomenon.

Consequently, the board said it has put in place "adequate machinery" to carry out a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances that hindered the candidates who were captured successfully during registration but failed during the verification exercise.
