The online adjunct faculty training is delivered in a cohort model and requires active participation throughout each week. The training content is a blend of understanding SNHU's faculty expectations, best practices for teaching online, pedagogy, creating student-centered learning communities, and effectively using SNHU academic technologies. The course is delivered through our learning management system (Brightspace).

Our online adjunct faculty training is facilitated by dedicated faculty trainers who are experienced SNHU faculty members.

SNHU is passionate about promoting continued learning. Online adjunct faculty are offered ongoing training and professional development opportunities through COLT (Center for Online Learning and Teaching). In fact, many of COLT’s learning events award CEUs upon successful completion since COLT has achieved accreditation through the IACET (International association for Continuing Education and Training).

Assignments are made on a term-by-term basis, approximately 8 weeks prior to the start of the term, with adjunct instructors allowed to teach up to 10 sections in an academic year. While we try to accommodate as many scheduling requests as we can, we are not able to guarantee a regular schedule, or teaching assignments every term.

  • Flexibility : Accommodate diverse student backgrounds, experiences, schedules, and time zones.
  • Effective Communication : Clearly communicate concepts and foster open dialogue in all areas of the course. This will include weekly course announcements, discussion board engagement, grading feedback, and other communications with students.
  • Collaboration : Work with advising and academic teams to enhance student success.
  • Commitment to Student Success : Strive to help students achieve their academic goals.
  • Professional Development : Stay updated with teaching methods and subject knowledge.

SNHU online courses run on a term schedule . There are 6 undergraduate terms in an academic year, lasting 8 weeks each and 5 graduate terms, lasting 10 weeks each.

The standard compensation for most courses is $2,200 per 8-week undergraduate course and $2,500 per 10-week graduate course. Nursing has a separate compensation structure.

Undergraduate and graduate adjuncts are paid biweekly and are considered W2 employees.

  • Asynchronous : Courses are designed for asynchronous learning, providing flexibility and autonomy for our learners. Students engage with materials and assignments on their own schedule, while still adhering to course deadline/requirements. Asynchronous setup accommodates diverse schedules and time zones. Courses include a number of weeks and each week includes assignments that are due by the end of that week.
  • Class Size : Most courses have 25-30 students, promoting interaction and engagement. Some courses, such as writing intensive courses, may have lower course caps.
  • Course Design and Consistency : Pre-built courses maintain uniformity in topics, grading, and rubrics. This format also ensures all students meet program objectives for accreditation.
  • Supplementing Content : The course is not developed by the online adjunct instructor. Adjuncts are encouraged to bring the content to life through sharing their experiences and expertise.
  • Course Materials : Required Textbooks and resources are offered in a variety of forms, including digital textbooks, digital courseware, and physical hard copies. Required course materials and textbooks are provided for the faculty free of charge prior to the term beginning.

Working as an online teacher

Online teachers must be comfortable with computers and technology. You’ll interact with students through email, message boards, chat rooms or via virtual reality platforms and software. Some online teachers post video or audio lectures online and provide their students with downloadable materials. Online teachers need to be flexible, as they're expected to answer students’ questions promptly.

Many online classes are set up so that all students attend a chat room at the same time and hear, see or read their online teacher's words simultaneously with live discussion via a message board.

Other online courses do not take place in real-time, but instead, provide material that students can download and study at their own pace.

What do employers look for when hiring online teachers.

Successful online teaching applicants bring several key qualifications to their work. Many hold backgrounds in education or child-focused work. Most positions also require a college degree. An online teacher typically must possess:

  • English proficiency
  • A college degree
  • Background in teaching or working with kids
  • Proficiency and comfort with computers and online technology
  • Experience or training with online course management platforms, such as D2L, Canvas, Blackboard, or Angel

Where Can I Find Online Teaching Jobs?

Where can you find online teaching jobs? Fortunately, many schools and private companies post their openings online. A prospective online educator can conduct a national job search rather than limiting themselves to local schools and employers.

When looking for online teaching jobs, focus on the specific role and teaching area. For example, online tutors or ELL instructors apply for different jobs than online K-12 teachers or adjunct professors.

Becoming an Online Teacher

Before pursuing online teaching jobs, consider the different types of online educators. Some specialize in tutoring, while others work in K-12 education. Colleges also hire online instructors. Each role comes with different education and certification requirements.

Online teachers may benefit from earning online teaching degrees . A master's in teaching online , for example, familiarizes students with online teaching technology.

Online Tutor

Online tutors instruct learners in many academic subjects. Tutors can specialize in areas like standardized test preparation, college-level tutoring, or elementary and secondary tutoring. The educational requirements depend on the role.

Most tutors hold college degrees. Standardized test tutors typically need scores in the 95th percentile or higher. Experience in education or tutoring helps people land online tutoring jobs.

Many tutors work through private tutoring companies. These tutors pay a portion of their earnings to the company, which connects them with clients. Other tutors operate as self-employed educators and recruit clients themselves.

Schools may hire tutors to work in writing or tutoring centers. Educators seeking tutoring jobs can search for local tutoring companies, contact schools, or start their own tutoring businesses.

K-12 Online Teacher

K-12 school districts continue to rely on online teachers to educate students and run online academies. The requirements for K-12 online teaching jobs vary depending on the school.

Public K-12 schools generally require teachers to possess licensure or certification. Each educator must complete an approved teacher training program , student teaching experience, and a background check to receive their teaching credentials. A bachelor's in education or a master's in education generally meets the requirements.

Private schools may hire online teachers who do not possess licensure. These educators typically need degrees in their subject areas or teaching degrees. Private schools also look for candidates with experience in the field. Candidates can typically find jobs for online teachers at the K-12 level posted through schools or school districts.

Online ELL Instructor

Online ELL instructors educate non-native English speakers in grammar, writing, and communication. They may work with international students preparing to attend American colleges or ELL learners at K-12 schools in the U.S.

An ELL instructor typically needs a bachelor's degree in English, communication, or education. Experience as a tutor or teacher helps candidates stand out for ELL instructor jobs. The position typically does not require any certifications.

Several private companies hire English language instructors to teach online courses. Depending on the position, instructors may work irregular hours. For example, ELL instructors working with students in Japan or China need to teach online during normal school hours in Asia.

Private Education Company Online Teacher

Many private education companies hire online teachers to educate elementary students in core subjects, prepare high schoolers for the SAT or ACT exam, and teach college-level classes. Depending on the company, instructors might teach a GMAT prep course for future MBA students, lead a group of English language learners through grammar exercises, or teach core writing skills to middle schoolers.

The requirements and qualifications vary depending on the role. Private education companies that specialize in standardized test courses set minimum scores for instructors. Postsecondary educators typically need college graduates. Prospective applicants should research local private education companies to learn more about the job requirements for online teachers.

Online Adjunct Professor

Online adjunct professors teach college-level courses. They work at two-year community colleges, universities, and trade schools. An adjunct professor typically needs a graduate degree in their field. Competitive positions may even require doctorates. Unlike public K-12 teaching jobs, adjunct professors generally do not need licenses or certification.

Depending on the role, adjuncts may teach 1-4 courses per term. Some adjuncts work at multiple colleges. Adjunct pay varies widely, so prospective adjuncts should research per-course rates during their job search.

Colleges typically hire adjuncts directly. Online instructors can look for job postings in their field. Teaching online opens up new possibilities for adjunct professors. Rather than limiting their job search to one local area, they can search nationally or even internationally. Possessing doctoral degrees or prior teaching experience can help adjuncts stand out.

Tips Before Becoming an Online Teacher

Experienced online teachers often look back at their first class and wish they had made different choices. Even educators with in-person teaching experience can benefit from the following tips for first-time online teachers.

  • Keeping the class engaged is one of the most important aspects of online teaching. Rather than relying on a lecture format, break up class with interactive features like chats, quizzes, and discussion questions.
  • Online teaching differs depending on the format. In synchronous classes , educators can interact directly with students during live sessions. It is often more difficult to keep students engaged in asynchronous classes.
  • Depending on the number of students, consider the grading load. In large classes, educators may need to use automated grading for quizzes and online assignments.
  • Online teachers improve with experience. Consider recording live lectures for you to review between terms.
  • Make sure students can easily contact you through email, video office hours, phone calls, and other voice-to-voice connections.

What led you to being an online teacher? What have you taught online?

I love teaching and being in the classroom, but the COVID-19 pandemic made in-person education impossible — and opened up new doors for online education.

My Ph.D. is in English, and I primarily teach composition courses online, both first-year and advanced sections. In these classes, we practice ways of anticipating and responding to the needs of different audiences and different kinds of rhetorical situations. We read a lot of essays by great writers, ask difficult questions of these texts, and prepare and share drafts that we workshop with partners.

How did you get your online teaching job?

The application process for college teaching positions looks very similar in the remote world as it did pre-pandemic. The application requires a lot of parts: cover letter, CV, sample syllabi, contact information for references, and student evaluation scores. The interview process was conducted via Zoom, and my orientation and onboarding also took place online.

I think my experience working remotely helped strengthen my application to teach online. Every day, I use the skills I learned in fully remote work environments to help me design my course delivery methods — from the way I present my lectures and engage students in discussions to how I design assignments and grade papers.

Is there anything about online teaching that you didn't expect?

I had expected it would be very hard for students to be fully present when they were Zooming into our class meetings from their dorm rooms or family dining room tables.

However, my students really impressed me with their dedication to their studies, their confidence in sharing ideas in the classroom, and their efforts on written assignments.

Not everyone was fully present every day, of course. But on the whole, I got to know many of them as individuals, and as a class, we engaged in some of the richest discussions I've had the pleasure of facilitating — and I got to read some of the strongest research papers of my teaching career.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Giving students personalized feedback has one of the biggest impacts on their learning.

PRACTICAL, HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Develop professional skills and receive frequent feedback and coaching.

How It Works

Claim an open assignment on the Assignment Board.

Grade and provide feedback on the student work using a rubric, prompt and the teacher’s grading instructions.

Wait for the teacher to approve your work and provide a rating and review just for you

Graders grade assignments that require high-quality, rubric-based scoring and feedback. Most assignments we support are writing assignments for English and Social Studies classes, and Graders should expect this to be the primary work available to them. For standard writing assignments, you’ll score and provide feedback on each student’s strengths and areas for growth, as well as share summary thoughts for the teacher on the class’s overall strengths and growths. We support some science, math, psychology, computer science, and other subject work as well. Graders can apply for additional qualifications to gain access to these subjects.

Grading is flexible – pick up the assignments that work for your schedule! We ask that Graders be prepared to dedicate an average of at least 6 hours per week during the school year (Sept-Dec and Feb-May). That equates to grading approximately four class assignments per month. Regular grading is win-win: Teachers and students benefit from your practice and experience, and you’ll build habits that make the work easier and more efficient

We open applications during two application periods. Fall semester applications will be open mid-July through mid-September, and spring semester applications will be open early January through early March. ( These windows are subject to change based on Grader needs ) You can expect to hear back from us about one week after submitting your Application Activity.

You can claim assignments on the Assignment Board or you may receive requests for assignments in the grade levels and subjects you are qualified to grade. Graders can improve their rankings with proven track records of effective feedback and dependability.

The Marco Learning team reviews every assignment before sending it along to the teacher. We’ll evaluate how well your work meets expectations for effective feedback and provide ongoing coaching and development to ensure highly effective feedback for students. The classroom teacher you are working with on a given assignment also has the opportunity to rate you on four metrics: quality of feedback, quality of scoring, professionalism, and an overall rating. The teacher also provides qualitative feedback and coaching to help you improve.

There is no in-person interaction; all the assignments and rubrics are digital, and communication occurs through the website. This means that you can work wherever and whenever you like.

The starting pay rate for Graders is $14 per hour of grading. Graders who prove to consistently meet or exceed expectations can earn $16 per hour. In addition, some advanced work comes with an hourly pay increase, and there can be “surge pricing” for certain courses or assignments with short turnaround times. Grading time calculations are based on assignment length and any special teacher requests, and they include time to become familiar with the prompt and rubric.

Graders love Marco Learning

“The system is easy to use and the feedback and support from the team is awesome! I enjoy the amount of work that was allowed for pick up and the process for raises/promotions.”

– Psychology Masters student at Southern New Hampshire University

I recommend grading to everyone I meet. I’ve had this job for three years now, and I never plan on leaving. I kept it when I started my first full-time job for extra cash, and it ended up getting me through an unexpected layoff from the pandemic. It’s made me a better writer and editor, and I regularly use it in job interviews. Plus, I love getting to give students specific and actionable feedback that I wish I had received. I seriously love working here, and I never want to leave!”

– Music and Business major at the University of Florida

“By being taught to grade others’ papers by strictly following a rubric and making sure student writing exemplifies what’s required, I have been able to greatly improve on my own writing which has definitely been noticed by my professors in class.”

– Political Science major at Purchase College

“I love the feeling that I contribute to the K-12 learning experience for students. The Marco Learning team’s communication is great and personal! I thought it was a robot when I first started, but nope! Graders also receive coaching for how to give feedback that is stellar!”

– Music Education major at the University of Central Florida

“I have loved working for Marco Learning! It provides a great opportunity to build my own schedule and work a convenient part time job from home. I also love how it enables me to practice my own writing and editing skills, and I enjoy helping make a difference in the lives of middle and high school students.”

– Neuroscience major at College of William and Mary

“I love getting to view students’ work and provide them with specific, actionable feedback! As an aspiring teacher, I recognize how important it is to provide students with feedback on their written work. Thank you to Marco Learning for allowing this platform to be very accessible and for always encouraging Graders!”

– English Literature major at the University of Central Florida

“Marco Learning is a platform that simultaneously provides convenience and benefits to teachers, K-12 students, and college students. College students are able to have a convenient and flexible part-time job, while teachers are able to devote more time to other aspects of their job and K-12 students receive high-quality feedback that will allow them to grow rapidly.”

– Human Biology major at USC

“Marco Learning does a wonderful job at encouraging the graders to utilize our full potential to truly help both the students and teachers. Additionally, I have felt cared for as an individual during my time with Marco Learning as opposed to a disposable worker as I have at many other jobs.”

– Chemistry major at University of Alabama at Birmingham

So, here we will summarise three research-based  online teaching approaches that teachers can use to guide their work in VLEs. We explain the focus, roles of teacher and students, the online learning environment and learning resources for each approach.

The content-acquisition approach

The main aim of this approach is to provide subject content to students. It is designed to cover all the essential concepts and principles of the subject matter. The content should be accessible, clear, concise, relevant, interactive, well explained and up to date to facilitate the students’ comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

  • Make EDI in higher education a reality by building it into your course design
  • The three stages of developing a framework to support students of open and distance learning
  • Master the art of effective feedback

Teacher role: The teacher is the primary source of knowledge. They are responsible for selecting and organising the course content, choosing the appropriate learning resources for students, designing the learning activities and assessing students’ learning outcomes.

Student role:  The student   is expected to acquire and learn the course content from the provided resources and complete the learning assignments. Each student’s acquired knowledge should accurately represent the course content. Most students’ learning time is devoted to self-paced learning.

Online learning environment: This should facilitate learners’ content acquisition. Thus, technology-based tools are mainly used to produce, provide access to and deliver learning resources and materials. The VLE will contain lesson plans, activities and grades and class recordings. The technology used needs to deliver live online classes, with teachers’ real-time explanations, to many students worldwide. A prototype example of the content acquisition approach can be seen in most  massive open online courses (Moocs).

Learning resources: Learning resources may be selected and designed to accurately represent the nature of the content and enhance students’ learning experience. Various kinds of resources may be used to represent and deliver the content, such as multimedia (video and audio tools), authoring tools, interactive resources (computer simulations, games, virtual labs), mobile resources and adaptive resources (intelligent tutoring systems).

The knowledge-building approach

The key feature of this approach is the knowledge-building processes through which students expand their individual understanding.

Teacher role: The teacher’s primary role is to guide, help and supervise students’ learning. The course design includes learning objectives, content, activities, scaffolding and support, and assessments. Course implementation involves supervision to ensure the correct application of learning skills and adequate task completion, correcting students’ misunderstandings, and monitoring and assessing the learning process and learning outcomes.

Student role: The student should actively engage in an individual knowledge-building process and activate high-level thinking processes. This is encouraged through enquiry-based assignments in which students must find solutions to project-based challenges or work through real-world or theoretical examples. Such assignments require a deep understanding of the content, challenging students to explore information, apply critical thinking , ask questions, design enquiries, interpret evidence, form explanations and communicate findings. Students must make connections, and apply and use their knowledge in authentic learning situations.

Online learning environment: Technology should help students to develop the best individual knowledge-building processes, learn content and complete activities. These environments integrate learning tools that support students’ learning and work on specific higher-order-thinking processes such as solving authentic problems. The  web-based inquiry science environment (WISE) provides a good example of an online learning environment of this kind.

Learning resources: Generally referred to as instructional scaffolding, resources combine content and learning guides, question prompts, model examples and conceptual, procedural, strategic and metacognitive supports to guide learning.

The collaborative learning approach

The critical feature of this approach is students’ collaboration in learning in virtual environments, usually using synchronous and written communication.

Teacher role: The teacher aims to facilitate high-quality social participation among students in collaborative learning activities. To achieve this, the teacher should create a learning environment that promotes relationships of trust and mutual commitment and provide learning resources that guide students’ social participation and collaboration in groups and in the community. The teacher should encourage communication, solve student conflicts, control learning periods and monitor students’ learning pace. Content and activities, such as online debates and team presentations, should be designed to facilitate collaboration and learning among equals.

Student role: Students engage naturally and proactively in community participation and group work and collaborate with peers to complete learning assignments, solve problems and share knowledge and perspectives. They participate in discussion and group work, and use critical thinking and creativity .

Online learning environments: Digital tools should be used that facilitate group-work organisation, promote group communication and collaboration, support knowledge exchange, and elaborate on shared outcomes. One example of such an online environment is Moodle, particularly the chat, forum, wiki and glossary functions.

Learning resources: Participants are expected to take an active role, building on the initial selection of learning resources the teacher provides according to their learning needs. For example, a shared learning task for students may be solving a problem or tackling a learning challenge collaboratively. In that situation, the students should search for and select new information related to the specific issue or challenge of the learning assignment and share it with their peers.

Teachers may use a single teaching approach to design an online course, but it is more likely they will take features from all three and combine them to best fit the different elements of the course and its learning objectives.

Teach English in Moscow, Russia

The heart of Russia, Moscow , stands as a proud emblem of the country's rich history and its ambitious stride towards the future. Stretching its vast expanse across the banks of the Moskva River, the city boasts iconic landmarks like the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and the Bolshoi Theatre, all of which narrate tales of Russia’s tsarist past, Soviet era, and its contemporary significance. But beyond the historical and political importance, Moscow is a vibrant metropolis, bustling with modernity while still deeply rooted in its traditions. As a juxtaposition of the old and new, it offers a unique setting for English teachers looking to immerse themselves in a culture that's both familiar in its urban dynamics and intriguingly foreign in its customs and nuances.

Reasons to Teach English in Moscow

Demand for English : With Moscow's status as a global city and a significant business hub, there's a growing demand for English proficiency. Businesses, students, and even tourists seek English language skills, creating ample opportunities for English teachers.

Experience Rich Culture : Moscow is a treasure trove of arts, music, and literature. From the classical ballet performances at the Bolshoi Theatre to the literary legacy of writers like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, teachers can immerse themselves in a deeply enriching cultural experience.

Competitive Salaries : The demand for native English speakers often comes with attractive salaries and benefits. While the cost of living can be high in the city center, smart budgeting and living slightly outside can offer a comfortable lifestyle.

Learning Russian : While teaching English, educators also get the chance to learn Russian, a language spoken by over 250 million people worldwide. It's not just an addition to your skill set but a window into understanding the Russian psyche and culture better.

Architectural Beauty : Moscow is an architectural paradise. From the onion domes of St. Basil’s to the modern skyscrapers of Moscow City, the urban landscape is a constant source of awe and wonder.

Gateway to Explore Russia : Moscow's extensive railway network and air connectivity make it a perfect base to explore the vast expanse of Russia, from the cultural streets of St. Petersburg to the natural wonders of Siberia.

Diverse Student Base : Teachers often find themselves instructing a mix of students, from young learners and university students to business professionals and retirees. This diversity makes the teaching experience varied and rewarding.

Experience Four Seasons : Moscow showcases all four seasons in their full glory. The snow-covered winter landscapes are iconic, but the spring blossoms, summer warmth, and autumn hues are equally mesmerizing.

Local Cuisine : Dive into the world of Russian gastronomy! From the hearty borscht and pelmeni to the sweet blini and syrniki, Moscow offers a culinary journey that's both diverse and delightful.

Unique Teaching Environment : Moscow has a mix of international schools, language centers, and private tutoring opportunities. This allows teachers to choose a teaching environment that aligns best with their preferences and expertise.

Understanding Moscow's Education Landscape

Moscow, being the capital city of Russia and its major economic, cultural, and scientific center, naturally has a dense concentration of educational institutions. The education landscape here is diverse, ranging from state-run schools and prestigious universities to private institutions and language centers. English is a sought-after language, and with Moscow's aspiration to be an influential player on the global stage, the emphasis on learning English has grown significantly.

There's a notable presence of international schools, catering primarily to expatriates and the elite class, which offers International Baccalaureate or British curricula. Additionally, language centers scattered across the city cater to various age groups and professions. Here, the focus might range from general English to more specialized courses like Business English. There's also a growing trend of private tutoring, where teachers offer personalized lessons to students, either one-on-one or in small groups.

Eligibility and Requirements to Teach English in Moscow

The requirements to teach English in Moscow will be similar to the standard requirements for teaching English in Russia , however, here are the specific requirements for Moscow:

Bachelor's Degree : A bachelor's degree in any field is typically required, though those with degrees in education or English might have an edge.

TEFL/TESOL/CELTA Certification : Most employers prefer candidates with a teaching certification, with a minimum of 120 hours of training.

Native English Speaker : Preference is often given to teachers from native English-speaking countries. However, non-native speakers with strong proficiency and credentials can also find opportunities.

Experience : Previous teaching experience, while not always mandatory, can significantly boost job prospects, especially in more esteemed institutions.

Background Check : A clean criminal record is essential, and a background check is standard procedure for most teaching positions.

Understanding of Russian Culture : While not a formal requirement, having an appreciation and understanding of Russian culture can be beneficial, both in the classroom and in day-to-day life.

Visa and Work Permit : It's crucial to secure the appropriate visa and work permit. Employers often assist with this process, but it's essential to ensure everything is in order.

Salary and Benefits for Teaching English in Moscow

Competitive Salaries : Depending on qualifications, experience, and the type of institution, monthly salaries can range from 60,000 to 120,000 Russian rubles. International schools and prestigious language centers tend to offer higher salaries.

Contract Completion Bonus : It's common for institutions to offer bonuses upon successful completion of a contract.

Health Insurance : Comprehensive health insurance is usually provided, which is a significant benefit given the varied quality of healthcare in Russia.

Paid Vacations : Teachers typically receive paid vacations, especially during significant public holidays and school breaks.

Professional Development : Some institutions offer or subsidize courses and workshops for teachers to further enhance their skills.

Contract Flexibility : Contracts can range from a few months for summer camps to a full academic year. Some contracts also offer the option for renewal.

Living in Moscow

The majestic and historical city of Moscow is Russia's pulsating heart, offering an eclectic blend of ancient traditions and modern urbanism. Living in Moscow presents a unique experience that's both challenging and rewarding. The city’s juxtaposition of centuries-old architecture with contemporary skyscrapers is a testament to its rich history and its eyes set firmly on the future.

1. Cultural and Historical Hub: Moscow is home to some of the world's most iconic landmarks, including the Kremlin, Red Square, and the Bolshoi Theatre. The city's museums, like the State Historical Museum and the Pushkin Museum, offer deep dives into Russia's intricate history and art.

2. Cost of Living: While salaries for English teachers are competitive, Moscow is one of the more expensive cities in Russia. Rent, dining out, and entertainment can be pricey, especially in the city center. However, with smart budgeting and by leveraging local markets and public transportation, it's manageable.

3. Transportation: Moscow boasts one of the world's most extensive metro systems. Not only is it efficient and affordable, but its stations are also often hailed as architectural masterpieces, adorned with mosaics, chandeliers, and sculptures. Buses and trams supplement the metro, making it easy to navigate the city.

4. Climate: Moscow experiences a continental climate, with cold winters where temperatures can drop below -20°C and warm summers that can reach up to 30°C. Snowfall during winters transforms the city into a winter wonderland, especially around the New Year when it's festively decorated.

5. Language: While Russian is the predominant language, younger generations and professionals often have a basic understanding of English. Still, learning basic Russian phrases can immensely help in daily life and is appreciated by locals.

6. Local Cuisine: Moscow offers a diverse culinary scene. Apart from international cuisines, traditional Russian dishes like borscht, pelmeni, and blinis are must-tries. The city also has a growing café culture, perfect for those who love their coffee.

7. Social Scene: The city is bustling with theaters, clubs, bars, and live music venues. Whether you're into classical performances at the Bolshoi or contemporary gigs at a local club, Moscow has something for every taste.

8. Safety: Like any major city, it's essential to be cautious, especially during the night or in less populated areas. However, Moscow generally has a low crime rate, especially concerning violent crimes against foreigners.

Teacher Stories

Sarah from usa:.

"When I first landed in Moscow, the cold was the first thing that hit me. But soon, the warmth of the people melted away all my apprehensions. Teaching English here has been an enriching experience. My students, eager to learn, showed me the true spirit of Russia. Plus, weekends exploring Red Square and trying out Russian cuisine have been nothing short of magical."

Liam from UK:

"I've always been intrigued by Russian literature. Living in Moscow, walking the streets that inspired writers like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, has been surreal. Teaching English here has been challenging, given the language barrier, but it's equally rewarding. The joy in my student's eyes when they construct their first English sentence is unparalleled."

Anele from South Africa:

"I initially came to Moscow for a short stint, but the city's energy drew me in. Teaching here is different from back home. The methodology, the emphasis on grammar, and the sheer enthusiasm of students is commendable. And, of course, there's nothing like a warm bowl of borscht on a cold Moscow evening."

Siobhan from Ireland:

"I've taught in various countries, but Moscow stands out. The blend of history, culture, and the modern hustle is unique. The students here are disciplined and eager to grasp the nuances of the English language. On a personal note, the ballet performances at the Bolshoi are something I'll cherish forever."

Moving Towards Teaching English In Moscow

Moscow, with its sprawling landscapes, rich history, and vibrant urban life, promises an unparalleled experience for English teachers. While there are challenges, as with any foreign country, the rewards far surpass them. Not only does one get the opportunity to shape the global perspectives of young minds, but teachers also immerse themselves in a culture that is both profound and exhilarating.

For those considering taking the leap, Moscow awaits with open arms. The city offers more than just a job; it provides a journey through time, a deep dive into a rich tapestry of art, literature, and traditions, and memories that last a lifetime. As you stand on the brink of this exciting adventure, remember that teaching in Moscow is not just about imparting knowledge but also about growing, learning, and building bridges between cultures.

Many in Gen Z ditch colleges for trade schools. Meet the 'toolbelt generation'

Windsor Johnston

Sy Kirby dreaded the thought of going to college after graduating from high school. He says a four-year degree just wasn't in the cards for him or his bank account.

"I was facing a lot of pressure for a guy that knew for a fact that he wasn't going to college," Kirby says. "I knew I wasn't going to sit in a classroom, especially since I knew I wasn't going to pay for it."

Instead, at the age of 19, Kirby took a job at a local water department in southern Arkansas. He said the position helped him to develop the skills that helped him start his own construction company.

Sy Kirby, who runs his own construction company, says a four-year degree just wasn't in the cards for him or his bank account.

Now at age 32, Kirby finds himself mentoring many of his employees, who also opted to learn a skilled trade rather than shelling out tens of thousands of dollars to pursue a degree that they wouldn't use after graduating.

Kirby says blue-collar work is lucrative and allows him to "call the shots" in his life. But, he says the job also comes with a downside, mainly because of the stigma attached to the industry.

"I think there's a big problem with moms and dads coming home from quote-unquote 'dirty' jobs. Coming home with dirty clothes and sweating. You had a hard day's work and sometimes that's looked down upon," he says.

High-paying jobs that don't need a college degree? Thousands of them sit empty

High-paying jobs that don't need a college degree? Thousands of them sit empty

Kirby is among the growing number of young people who have chosen to swap college for vocational schools that offer paid, on-the-job training.

Skilled trades make a comeback

Lisa Countryman-Quiroz is the CEO of JVS, or Jewish Vocational Service, a nonprofit in San Francisco that provides career training for unemployed workers to find jobs, including in skilled trades. She says that over the years there has been a shift — with skilled trade making a comeback, especially among members of Generation Z.

"Folks have really prioritized a college education as a path to the middle class and a path to a cushy office job." But, Countryman-Quiroz says, "over the last 10 to 15 years, we are seeing a trend among young people opting out of universities. Just the crushing debt of college is becoming a barrier in and of itself."

More than half of Gen Zers say it's possible to get a well-paying job with only a high school diploma, provided one acquires other skills. That's according to a survey by New America, a Washington Think Tank that focuses on a range of public policy issues, including technology, education and the economy.

The high cost of college prompts a change in career paths.

In addition, the Education Data Initiative says the average cost of college in the United States has more than doubled in the 21st century.

With that price tag increasing, many Gen Zers say they've been left with no choice but to leave the college path. Many say living with their parents until they can pay off their college debt isn't an option.

Do I need a four-year degree?

The Indicator from Planet Money

Do i need a four-year degree.

Nitzan Pelman is founder of Climb Hire, a company that helps low-income and overlooked people break into new careers. She says many young people say graduating from college with a six-figure debt is a non-starter.

"It's not a secret that the cost of college has gone up so dramatically in the last decade that it's really cost prohibitive at this point," she says.

Pelman says pursuing skilled trades can also help "level the playing field," especially for young people from less-privileged backgrounds and for people of color.

Construction boom helps fuel job gains in March

Construction boom helps fuel job gains in March

"We don't see a lot of Black men in construction, but more Latino men in construction and you don't see many women in construction. Social capital is a really big gatekeeper and a door-opener for accessing high-quality jobs and helping people break into certain industries," she says.

In 2021, President Biden signed a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill. Since then, he's been traveling the country promoting the law, which he says will open up thousands of new jobs in trades.

Comparing college costs to the amount a student expects to earn after graduation

"you can expect to get your hands dirty and that's ok".

The high cost of college isn't the only factor driving many young people toward skilled trades. With the use of artificial intelligence on the rise, many Gen Zers see manual labor as less vulnerable to the emerging technology than white-collar alternatives. They also say vocational schools are a straight path to well-paying jobs.

Pelman says increasing salaries and new technologies in fields such as welding, plumbing and machine tooling are giving trade professions a face-lift, making them more appealing to the younger crowd.

"There are a lot of vocational jobs out there that are pretty attractive — HVAC repair and installation, electricians, solar panel installer — there's so much demand for wind turbine installers who, in many cases, make more than $100,000 a year — so there's a lot of demand for manual labor," she stresses.

That was the case for 25-year-old Diego Aguilar, who says a traditional desk job was out of the question for him. Aguilar now works full time at a trade center at East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, Calif., after going through the JVS training program.

"When I went into a trade program I learned how much money I could make performing a very specific kind of work. You need mechanics, you need machinists, you need carpenters, operators you need painters. You can expect to get your hands dirty and that's OK," Aguilar says.

Jobs Friday: Why apprenticeships could make a comeback

Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center shows the number of students enrolled in vocational-focused community colleges increased 16% from 2022 to 2023.

As for Kirby, he says his mission is to keep raising awareness about what he calls the "toolbelt generation."

"Where they can walk out of the school of hard knocks, pick an industry, work your 10 years, take your punches, take your licks and hopefully you're bringing jobs and careers back to the community," he says.

When asked if he regrets his decision to go into skilled trades, Kirby chuckles. "Not for a second," he says.
