Portland Community College offers you three areas of writing study: Creative Writing, English Composition, and Technical Writing.

Creative Writing

Are you looking to stimulate and improve your imaginative writing? The PCC creative writing program offers you the opportunity to study with instructors who provide unique approaches to creative writing. Expect to write a great deal, learn critical terminology, and spend class time discussing your own and others’ writing.

PCC offers one of the largest selections of creative writing courses in the state. There are no prerequisites for most of the introductory courses, although you should be able to write at the WR 121 level. All the courses are good for three units of transferable credit.

English Composition

The goal of the Composition Program is to provide students with the opportunity to practice those writing skills which will enable them to write successfully in all their college courses. By the end of the program, students should be skillful at reading analytically and critically; their writing should demonstrate an understanding of organization, audience, voice, and the conventions of college-level written English.

In any of the courses in the Composition Program, students will be expected to write several papers; they may be asked to keep a reading journal and practice peer editing in small groups or engage in some form of collaborative learning in which essays will be read by other students in the class. Some in-class writing is required in all writing courses.

Technical Writing

Technical writing is common in the contemporary workplace. Students from disciplines as diverse as business, engineering, information technology, law, and science benefit from taking technical writing courses.  You will learn how to analyze and communicate special information and to adapt your visuals, formats, and writing styles to the specific audiences and needs of the fields. These courses emphasize the precise use of language and graphics to communicate complex technical and procedural information safely, legally, and ethically.  We also focus on career-specific writing such as proposals, letters, memoranda, lab reports, and/or work reports. (See the Writing catalog and class schedule for technical writing classes.)

Want to deepen your knowledge? Consider the Creative Writing focus award .

Resources for writing students

Writing tutoring is available at all campus tutoring centers and provides valuable resources to help you write papers. They’re open 5 days a week, and staffed by instructors in the Writing program and by peer tutors (students who have completed WR 121, 122, 123, and are enrolled in a tutor-training class.) Writing centers can provide help from the very beginning (brainstorming ideas) to the very end (editing).

Other useful resources are computer labs , libraries , and student printing so you can print documents on campus.

What will you do?

You will find that strong writing skills will aid your professional career as you author well-worded emails and reports that your supervisors and colleagues will welcome reading.

Not quite ready for credit courses in writing?

Creative Writing

Program description.

Embedding the development of an evolved practice of creative writing in a school of art and design.

Embedding the development of an evolved practice of creative writing in a school of art and design , the Creative Writing program offers a unique opportunity to explore writing's relationship with contemporary art through interdisciplinary and hybridized forms.

The major is centered around creative writing studio classes in a variety of genres to build experience with the art of writing. We explore the use of language as a visual medium and incorporate writing into our visual work. We support both experimental writing practices and those focused on contemporary forms of fiction, poetry, and script writing. Innovation, crossing—and at times erasing—creative boundaries, experimentation with forms and media, and a self-determined path sit at the heart of creative writing at PNCA.

Student Work

I work with fragmentation, the tension between immediacy and accessibility in the experience of poetic and visual works, and the state of the word in contemporary visual culture.

MFA in Creative Writing: Admissions

Application fee waivers available.

If you do not qualify for an application fee waiver through the Graduate School , the English Department may be able to provide you with one. The Department has a limited number of application fee waivers available, which will be granted on a first come, first served basis. To request a fee waiver through the Department, please complete the  Graduate Application Fee Waiver Request Form  by  January 1, 2024 .

Application deadline, application process, funding and graduate assistantships, mfa offer guidance, english language proficiency requirement.

If you have questions about the program or the admissions process, contact the Creative Writing Director, John Beer, at [email protected] or the Graduate Coordinator at  [email protected] .

Admission to graduate study is granted on the basis of evidence of preparedness to undertake advanced work and the probability of successful completion of the degree. All applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution (the degree may be in progress at the time of application but must be completed before admission can be finalized). We also expect an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Students apply to the genre in which they wish to work: fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.

In compiling your application, consider that the most important part is your writing sample. We are looking for promise, which may take many forms and varies according to genre, but in all cases includes an engagement with language. While many students enter the MFA program with a background in English literature, writing, or journalism, it is not required. Many of our strongest students come from backgrounds in the sciences, social sciences, and other areas in the humanities.

The MFA in Creative Writing Program admits once a year. The deadline for application for Fall enrollment is January 15 . There is no flexibility on the deadline. Applications must be submitted and complete with all supplemental materials by the deadline.

Applications are submitted electronically through the  Graduate School .

  • For the "Letters of Recommendation" section, fill out the recommender's contact information. Click on "Submit Recommendation Request" to send an automated request via email. The recommender will then receive an email with a link that they will follow to upload your letter of recommendation.  You can send these requests before submitting your application materials.
  • After your application has been submitted, you will be able to log back in and monitor the status of your letters of recommendation. You can send a reminder to your recommenders, add new recommenders, or edit information about an existing recommender.
  • Upload all files as PDF/DOC/DOCX/RTF. JPG/TIF/PNG/PDF/GIF is allowed for test scores or transcripts.
  • You will not be able to make corrections to a submitted application.

Required Supplemental Materials

  • A personal introduction.  Approximately two-to-three pages, double-spaced, describing the applicant's background as a writer, goals, and interest in this particular program.
  • A manuscript.  The manuscript should be in the applicant's primary genre. Manuscript form is defined as having one inch margins, double spaced text, a single, clear, 12-point typeface, no extra space between paragraphs, indented first line for each paragraph, information identifying the author and title of the manuscript on every page, and page numbers. Poetry manuscripts may be single-spaced. Previously published, single-authored work will be accepted. Manuscripts should demonstrate mastery of basic craft and literary promise, and should represent your best work regardless of whether or not it has been published. Writing samples can be comprised of one or multiple bodies of work. Fiction manuscripts should be 20 to 30 pages, nonfiction manuscripts should be 20 to 30 pages (of magazine articles and/or creative nonfiction), and poetry manuscripts should be 12 to 15 pages.
  • Three letters of recommendation. These should come from a professional or academic author who can comment on your academic performance, or attest to your skills as they pertain to your selected program of study.
  • Transcripts . Submit an unofficial transcript from each post-secondary institution at which you received a degree. These transcripts must be a scan of both the front and back of each page of an official transcript issued to you, and may not be a printout of your academic record from your school's website. If you are accepted into the program and decide to attend, you must submit official transcripts to the Graduate School before you can register for classes for your second term of attendance.
  • C.V. / Resume (optional). A C.V. or resume is optional but strongly recommended for applicants who would like to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship.
  • GRE scores are  not  required.

The English Department offers a very limited number of graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs). GTAs receive a stipend and a 9-credit tuition remission in fall, winter, and spring terms and are appointed for two years, depending on performance and available funding. GTAs will, in their first year, typically tutor in the Writing Center for two quarters and teach WR 121Z: Composition I for one quarter. In their second year, GTAs will typically teach each quarter, though they may opt to spend a quarter in the Writing Center. Applicants who would like to be considered for a GTAship should submit a short (1-2 page) essay describing their interest in and qualifications for the position. They should describe and reflect on any experience they've had as a teacher or tutor, especially of college-level writing, and discuss how they hope to grow as a teacher through their experience as a GTA.

See the  English Department graduate student funding  page for more information on funding options, including University-wide graduate assistantships, awards, and scholarships.

As members of an access institution that serves the public, our MFA faculty seeks to provide clear and frank information so that students can engage in the careful and well-informed planning of their education. We therefore offer this guidance to students receiving enrollment offers from MFA programs.

  • We, like many schools, are a signatory to the CGS April 15 Resolution , which states: "Students are under no obligation to respond to offers of financial support prior to April 15; earlier deadlines for acceptance of such offers violate the intent of this Resolution." This helps students fully consider all competing aid offers. If requested by a signatory university to decide sooner, consider tactfully noting the Resolution. They may not be aware of their status as signatories, but they are expected to honor it.
  • Quickly deciding for or against enrollment does not necessarily confer a financial advantage. If you have an aid offer you're considering accepting, it can be in your interest to first apprise other programs you were admitted to, as they may improve their offers.
  • Consult the US Department of Education College Scorecard , which lists each college and program's actual median annual costs, median student debt, and median salary after graduation.
  • If the net costs of a graduate institution are not feasible, consider the potential benefits of waiting and applying again the following year. Your application materials can grow stronger in the interim, and your prospects of a better offer may improve.

If the applicant's native language is not English, and the applicant has not received a baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or an equivalently accredited non‐U.S. institution with instruction exclusively in English, the student must demonstrate English language proficiency. Such applicants must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 80. The International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS) may be substituted for the TOEFL; the minimum acceptable score is 6.5. For further information about the English Language Proficiency Requirement, visit the Admissions'  English Language Proficiency page , or contact International Admissions at 503-725-8410 or  [email protected] .

Senior: OSU is a really great school for many different academic programs if you're willing to commit yourself to your education. Junior: Portland State University is a great school to attend for many reasons. The professors I've met so far are passionate about what they teach, and they show great interest in your progress. PSU runs on a term schedule, so the academics are very accelerated. If you are someone who has good time management and works well with a busy school, this will be a great fit. The student community is very friendly and the school is always offering new ways for students to connect. The only thing that can be problematic would be the local area. Portland has a large homeless population and a lot of drug control issues, so there can be some questionable people roaming on campus from time to time. Fortunately, there is always campus security around and help stations with buttons for emergencies. All school buildings are also locked and you can't get in without a student key card, so it puts many students' minds at ease. Junior: As someone who loves to learn but struggles with focus and motivation, Pacific's small class sizes work for me. The ability to connect one-on-one with professors and learn is extremely helpful and enriching to the whole college experience, personally, if I like and respect the person I'm learning from I learn a lot better, and that has been my experience with almost every professor here with a couple of exceptions of course (as at all schools). Though I'll say the party scene's a bit lacking, but there's still a great campus community. there are a ton of extra-curricular activities like a great Greek life and many student-run clubs. Though I think it can initially be a bit daunting and difficult to make friends (especially as an introvert like myself), once you find your field of study there are tight-knit communities within them that are incredibly friendly and kind. I feel really connected to everyone in my dorm and on my teams, and in my classes. My favorite part about Linfield is how small the campus is. Everyone seems to know everyone somehow. Being on the Cross Country and Track team has been my favorite experience by far. Our coach is really into team bonding, so we do many group events. We have team dinners frequently, we went on a camping trip in the fall, and we always do our runs and workouts together. Additionally, I love my classes and the professors. They are extremely knowledgeable and seem very passionate about what they're teaching. They are always willing to help out their students by giving extra resources as needed, like extra study notes, additional time to complete work, and setting up study groups before exams. Alum: I absolutely loved my time at George Fox! As an academically-minded engineering student, I was primarily interested in the small, rigorous classes and the extremely qualified professors. The professors really care about their students and are more than willing to utilize office hours for anything from academics to life to spirituality. The coursework is challenging but applicable, and help is easily avaliable through office hours or peer-tutoring programs. My classmates were also (generally) great! Most people in my classes really wanted to be there to learn, so group projects weren't as bad as they could have been. Work-study positions are avaliable for students who qualify. The cafeteria food was far better than most other colleges I have visited, although they have their moments. The gym is great, with a variety of machines, courts, studios, and a rock wall. Creative Writing

Thanks for your interest in Creative Writing at Reed College! Here you'll find some general information about what we do and what we hope for our students.

The first thing you should know is that we are not an official department. Rather, we exist within the English Department, which we think of as a good thing. The more you know about the larger world, literary history, Shakespeare or Faulkner, for example, the better your writing will be. That's a fact.

We offer ten Creative Writing courses  a year, all of which fulfill Group 1 Requirements; we hope these courses will help you hone your craft and experiment with new ways of writing while also providing opportunities to participate in a larger writing community.

The path to writing a creative thesis in the English Department depends on when you were first enrolled at Reed. Please see the Creative Writing requirements for details.

Courses are taught as workshops by practicing writers. Students write works of poetry and fictional and non-fictional prose, which are then distributed to other participants in the workshop for review and critique. In addition to discussions of your own work, many of our courses entail some degree of reading the work of published authors. Additionally, when possible, we try to offer students the opportunity to participate in workshops, discussions and meetings with visiting writers . And, students are encouraged to participate in literary events both on and off campus and to create such events of their own.

We encourage students from all disciplines to take creative writing  courses. Admission requires consent of the instructor based on a writing  sample . Each of  our classes is capped at fifteen students to insure that the creative  work environment remains a space wherein student work is the primary focus.

Creative theses are only available for students who are English majors.  Details are here .

If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact one of us. We'll be most happy to talk with you.

Sincerely, The Creative Writing Faculty

Multnomah Arts Center

Literary Arts

The Multnomah Arts enter offers a variety of writing classes for adults and youth year-round. Our program consists of a variety of genres and topics, allowing students to build skills as they create a body of work. Students take one-day workshops or ten-week classes to explore their written voice. Quarterly public readings of student and faculty work bring our community together to celebrate the written word.

Core Writing Classes

MEMOIR Anyone can write a memoir. We all have stories-young and old, rich and poor, famous and not so. Participants will use prompts and other exercises to trigger and unlock their memories in order to zero in on those moments that are both rich and significant. Draw inspiration and craft secrets from other authors and address and put aside the inner critic, so that you may engage your creative process in a safe and encouraging environment.

FICTION Do you have a story to tell? Have you dreamt up characters who you want to know more about? Do you want to use your imagination to create fictional worlds? Whether you have great ideas for stories but no idea how to start, or drafts of stories that don’t feel quite finished, this class is for you. Together we’ll explore how character, language, and narrative structure work in each other’s writing as well as in published works.

CREATIVE NONFICTION The blank page’s potential can intimidate some writers into silence. Bring an empty notebook and be guided through the writing process from its messiest beginnings to a completed story. This genre includes memoir, essay, narrative journalism, interviews, and all other true stories.

POETRY Poetry as a means of expression, exploration, and experience is available to everyone. Take time in class to write poems in response to prompts, prompts, and more prompts, leaning into your imagination and following the impulses of your right brain. Read and respond to one another’s work in this supportive setting, suggesting and sharing revisions.

Inspiring local high school students through transformative experiences in the classroom and the concert hall.

The Youth Programs of Literary Arts inspire our city’s youth to find their stories and play an active role in the broader community. We provide opportunities for high school students to use their voice through creative writing, Q&As with authors, student readings, and spoken word performance. Much of our work prioritizes underserved communities, and we strive to make our programs as equitable as possible.

Literary Arts hires professional writers to teach creative writing residencies in public high school classrooms. Residencies culminate in student readings, an annual anthology, and a celebration at the Portland Book Festival.

Students to the Schnitz

By partnering with local schools and community groups Literary Arts provides students with books, tickets, and transportation to concert hall events and bring visiting authors to engage with students at local high schools.
