By default, Blackboard assignment allows single attempt. Yet your instructor may allow you to submit an assignment more than once for a variety of reasons. You should go through 'Assignment Information' before submitting the assignment. Your teachers might indicate the number of attempts allowed there.

how to remove submitted assignment on blackboard

This article suggests what you can do if you would like to submit an additional attempt to an assignment.

Submit a new attempt

Access the assignment in the content area (e.g., Course Contents). If an assignment allows multiple attempts and you have not used up the number of attempts, you will see a 'Start New' button on the 'Review Submission History' page. You can start and submit a new attempt then.

how to remove submitted assignment on blackboard

To access 'Review Submission History' page, click on the assignment link. Please refer to Blackboard Help: Submit Assignments (Resubmit an assignment) for more information.

Remember to check if your assignment was submitted successfully (Blackboard Help: Common Questions About Assignments (How do I check that my assignment was submitted?)) after the submission.

Please note that students cannot delete or overwrite previous submissions.

Request an additional attempt

In case the assignment allows single attempt or you have used up the number of attempts, you are advised to contact the Instructor and TA and see if they would like to allow additional attempts or ignore/clear the wrong attempt for you. If they have questions about those features, they are welcome to contact us at ITSC Service Desk ( https://servicedesk.itsc.cuhk.edu.hk ) or [email protected] and we will follow up with them.

If your Instructor or TA allow you to submit a new attempt, after submitting it, remember to check if your assignment was submitted successfully (Blackboard Help: Common Questions About Assignments (How do I check that my assignment was submitted?)).

Resubmitting to an assignment

Some assignments may allow students the ability to overwrite their previous submissions until the due date and time set for the assignment. This option can be set by the instructor on an assignment by assignment basis. If overwriting is not enabled, the instructor must manually delete a previous submission to allow the student user to submit a second file.

The first submission and three resubmissions will generate a similarity report instantly. Any subsequent submissions will incur a 24-hour delay between reports generating. Any resubmissions will overwrite the previously uploaded file.

If resubmission by overwrite has been enabled or an instructor has deleted the student user’s first submission, resubmitting a paper is handled in an identical manner as a first time submission to an assignment. Follow the steps for a first time submission as listed in this manual.

When a student user clicks on the Resubmit button in the class portfolio page for an assignment allowing overwrite resubmission, a warning pop-up will appear. This serves to notify the student user that, if available, Originality Reports for any resubmission that is made in this assignment will require an additional twenty four hour delay to generate.

Submitting an assignment in Blackboard

Your lecturer or tutor may ask you to submit your assignment (exam, essay, report, project, etc.) using Blackboard.

How do I submit an assignment in Blackboard

Please note, if your department provides specific instructions for how to submit an assignment in Blackboard, use those first, otherwise follow the general instructions below:

  • Log in to Blackboard and select the paper name for which you're submitting the assignment.
  • Find the name of the assignment (it will be in one of the content areas — browse through the buttons in the paper menu to find it), then click on the name of the assignment link. If you are unsure where the assignment submission might be, you can ask your lecturer.
  • You can either attach a file or use the Submission box to type in (or cut and paste) your assignment. Type relevant comments into the Comments box to make it clear who you are and what assignment file you are submitting.
  • Click on Browse My Computer to locate the file on your computer and double-click to select it. Tip: keep your file names simple and don't use odd characters (#, !, &, etc.). If you need to submit more than one file for this assignment, repeat this step.
  • When your assignment is ready to send, click Submit . If you click Save as Draft instead your assignment will not be submitted to your lecturer/tutor. You should see a message at the top of the page: " This assignment is complete. Review the Submission History. " If you want to check that everything has gone through okay, click on the name of the assignment link. Look in the Review Submission History to see the file or files you have submitted.
  • If the assignment type is a Turnitin Submission, Turnitin should display a receipt upon successful submission and you should take a copy of this by either taking a screenshot or clicking Print and saving as a PDF . Blackboard Assignments will send you an email to confirm that your submission was received.
  • If your lecturer has allowed you to submit your assignment more than once, you can start another submission by clicking Start New Submission within the assignment page.

Contact AskOtago :

  • If you have attempted to submit an assignment or exam using Blackboard but forgot to attach the file, the submission will be blank and have a timestamp.
  • If your lecturer has only allowed one submission and you upload the wrong file or make a mistake.
