The international and interdisciplinary "Ph.D. Program Medical Research in Genomic and Molecular Medicine – Personalized Approaches to Childhood Health" is part of the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital and the Munich Medical Research School. It is primarily open to assistant physicians specializing in pediatrics but also to candidates from other disciplines (medicine, natural sciences, life sciences). The Ph.D. program offers research and qualification opportunities in the fields of genomics, epigenetics, molecular, cell and developmental biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and immunology, with the focus on the normal and pathological development of the child. Doctoral candidates are in close contact with a thesis advisory committee and together with the committee they define their individual research goals. This ensures that the needs of each Ph.D. candidate are met on their way obtaining the degree.

Application is possible independent of deadlines.

In the programme, the students study problems as diverse as pathogen-host interactions. They explore the molecular biology of model microorganisms or the diversity of microbial life in a variety of interesting places of our planet. Moreover, the research also involves the application of microorganisms and plants in biotechnology as well as the investigation of interactions between pro- and eukaryotic microorganisms and plants. In their projects, the students apply a variety of genetic and biochemical methods as well as a wide range of tools at the systems level (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics).

The doctoral programme in "Microbiology and Biochemistry" is part of the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics, and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB). It is hosted by the Göttingen Center for Molecular Biosciences (GZMB) and is conducted jointly by the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences.

The research-oriented programme is taught in English and open to students who hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences, chemistry, physics, or related fields, and who are interested in general, applied and infection biology as well as biochemistry and plant-microbe interactions.

The GGNB offers an integrated training and qualification concept consisting of:

  • Thesis advisory committees advising the doctoral student and monitoring the progress of the doctoral project
  • Scientific methods courses, seminars and summer schools in all science areas covered by the graduate school
  • Professional skills courses in the four categories of Scientific Communication; Good Scientific Practice, Ethics, and Intellectual Property; Self-Management and Organisational Skills; and Career Development as well as German language courses and courses on scientific English
  • Industry excursions to biotechnological, pharmaceutical, optical or (bio)physical companies, guided by GGNB alumni
  • Student-organised scientific symposia and career-related events
  • Annual PhD retreats organised by the programmes

In total, 20 credits are required, and doctoral students can tailor their individual curricula by choosing from all courses and events. Only a seminar on good scientific practice is mandatory.

The doctoral students hold at least three annual Thesis Advisory Committee meetings within the regular PhD time of three years. The maximum duration of PhD studies in GGNB is four years.

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Currently, expenses for accommodation, food, health insurance and books are approx. 1,000 EUR per month. Please note that fees for health insurance may vary according to age. Living expenses might be slightly higher. For further information, please see the following link: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/54664.html

Doctoral fellowships are available at approx. 1,200 to 1,500 EUR per month.

Master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, physics, or a related field

Applicants whose native language is not English are asked to submit proof of proficiency in English. If no English test is available, proficiency in English can be evaluated during a personal interview. Proven higher education in English or a reasonably long stay in an English-speaking country may also be accepted.

Online application at http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/apply/497097.html

The Accommodation Service of the International Office supports international students who are enrolled at the University of Göttingen in finding accommodation and serves as a point of contact for related queries. The Accommodation Service also publishes suitable offers from private landlords in Göttingen and collaborates with the Student Services ("Studentenwerk"). As the number of available accommodation options in Göttingen is limited, it is highly recommended to contact the Accommodation Service as early as possible. For further information, please see the following link:

https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/617883.html

Please note: For doctoral students, accommodation services are only available if you have a low income.

Ph-D-farbig

The LMU Medical Faculty has offered the Ph.D. Medical Research , a structured doctoral program of at least three years, for several years now. The Ph.D. is a research and training program, around medical research topics. In particular, it focuses on biomedical experimental, clinical, translational, and health sciences research. The Ph.D. Medical Research is designed for graduates who have completed an undergraduate degree (master's degree, state examination, or similar) in medicine, veterinary medicine, the natural sciences, pharmacy, a health science, or a related field and plan to conduct full-time research for at least three years .

In order to provide structured doctoral programs for Ph.D. students, university professors and lecturers in the Faculty of Medicine have joined together in various core areas and have committed themselves to adhere to the framework (recruitment, supervision, qualification and examination) specified in the study regulations for the Ph.D. Medical Research. This implies that events (workshops, seminars, etc.) are offered jointly within the framework of a core area. Depending on demand, doctoral students from other departments can also participate, which allows a lively exchange to take place and networks to be formed.

The concept of individual Ph.D. projects in the different research areas, coupled with a structured and partly integrative training program has proved successful over the past years.

Introduction of the Ph.D. Medical Research

A description of the Ph.D. Medical Research (structure, minimum requirements, etc.) can be found here.

Application and Selection

In order to obtain a Ph.D. in Medical Research, you must complete an application and selection process. Depending on which area you wish to carry out your Ph.D. in, there may be different application deadlines and procedures.

Core Areas and Research Training Groups

Currently, there are 5 Ph.D. core areas at the faculty, in addition to numerous SFBs and graduate programs that offer a Ph.D. in Medical Research. If none of the existing programs fit, there is the possibility of an "individual Ph.D. in Medical Research".

Supervision of your Ph.D. Project

Information on who can supervise your Ph.D. project, as well all documents required for this, can be found here.

Registration of your Ph.D. Project

Once you have successfully applied and been accepted for the Ph.D. Medical Research, you need to register yourself and your project using the online platform.

Curriculum and Courses

The Ph.D. Medical Research requires you to complete a curriculum comprising 30 ECTS. Information on how to accomplish this, can be found here.

Submission of your Ph.D. Thesis

Once you have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. Medical Research, you can submit your thesis.

Further Procedure and Oral Defence

Information on the evaluation process of your thesis, as well as on the oral defence can be found here.

Completion of the Procedure and Certificates

Once you have successfully completed your oral defence, you must submit the statutory copies to the University Library, before you can receive your degrees and certificates.

Institute of Medical Genetics and Human Genetics of the Charité Berlin

Medical genetics examines the origins and mechanisms of diseases caused by genetic disorders. Medical genetics connects basic research with clinical medicine and thereby allows for the application of findings when making predictive and preventive assessments.

In addition to the standard methods used for diagnostics, medical genetics makes use of an increasing number of molecular genetic methods. The use of these methods enables us to identify an ever increasing number of genetic diseases. Molecular genetics exhibits an exceptional potential to assist us in the comprehension of the etiology and pathogenesis of diseases and will contribute to the development of novel therapeutic concepts.
