You can apply for a studentship on one of Wellcome's four-year programmes if you're a graduate or student who has, or expects to obtain, a degree (or equivalent for EU and overseas candidates) in a relevant subject.

Candidates with other relevant qualifications or research experience may also be eligible.

Who can't apply

You can't apply to carry out activities that involve the transfer of grant funds into mainland China.

Phd registration fees at the home (uk) rate show.

Nationals of the UK and Republic of Ireland are eligible to pay home fees.

Nationals of all other high-income countries will need to pay international fees. From 1 January 2021, this also includes EU and EEA nationals.

Cross-institutional collaboration

The London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) enables social science research students to join and develop a research community that springs from the interface between the social science disciplines with health and medicine, the natural and physical sciences, engineering, and the arts and humanities. The LISS DTP is funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and led by King’s College London , in partnership with Imperial College London and Queen Mary University of London .

Students joining the LISS DTP are registered at either King’s, Queen Mary or Imperial, and all students will have access to LISS DTP Training Programme and Events.

New funding help for King’s graduate students

Often described as the intellectual lifeblood of the University, graduate students have had a difficult time of late, with research funding in decline and the exceptional difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. For many, the closure of labs, libraries and research spaces during the lockdown periods has meant delays in being able to complete research work, and existing funding running out.

Declining availability of grants at both MPhil and PhD level, combined with the insecurity that graduates can be faced with during their studies, present barriers that are known to actively deter talented students from going on to further research. Additional financial support can make all the difference.

Two generous gifts towards graduate students are helping us tackle these inequities and enable students without existing financial means to undertake further study without the worry of having to assemble funding from disparate sources. One will support King’s PhD students from the UK or overseas, in any subject, who are in need of financial aid, and is eligible for match funding from the University’s Harding Challenge Fund, which extends the impact of giving to any aspect of student support at Cambridge.

It is perhaps unsurprising that those most closely involved with the College’s students should wish to help, having seen at first hand some of the difficulties faced. The second gift, from a King’s Fellow, will fund graduate studentships aimed particularly at those whose own parents did not go to university.

Adding to undergraduate student debt with further loans to fund graduate study can be a major deterrent. What’s more, those with most potential for graduate research aren’t always those who have been the highest achievers at undergraduate level – yet what graduate funding there is gets tied to this. Graduate funding is an area where every little counts, and at College level we are often in the best position to judge who will most benefit - Robin Osborne, Professor of Ancient History and former Senior Tutor at King’s.

Community is at the heart of College life and the impact of the lockdown periods has been profound, particularly for those who arrived at King’s to find themselves confined to a limited household and with little opportunity for interacting outside of it. A further gift will fund additional College social activities, helping to redress the balance for students whose Cambridge experience over the last 15 months has been very different to previous years’.  

King’s Provost Professor Michael Proctor said:

The myriad relationships that only develop when people gather in large numbers and close proximity have never had a chance even to begin. We need consciously to rebuild social life within College at every level, and offer the sort of opportunities for the chance encounter and unexpected conversation that serve to make this so enriching a place. It’s wonderful to have this gift to help us do this.

Chevening scholarships are open to applicants from over 160 countries and territories around the world, looking to study an eligible one year taught master’s degree at a UK institution.

Whilst there is no ‘typical’ Chevening Scholar, we are looking for the kind of people who have the passion, ideas, and influence to provide the solutions and leadership needed to create a better future.

Because these scholarships are fully-funded, you are free to focus on achieving your professional goals and maximising the experience of a lifetime. You will live and study in the UK for a year, during which time you will develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. These awards will also enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increase institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and will contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration.

Intended beneficiaries:  High-quality graduates who have the potential to undertake world-class research of a developmental nature and to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth PhD Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

These scholarships are offered under six CSC Development themes.

As part of a partnership agreement between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and King’s College London, scholars who are funded on this scholarship receive support towards their tuition fees from King’s.

To apply for these scholarships, candidates must:

• Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
• Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country

Title: Colfuturo Semillero de Talentos Program (King’s College London Scholarships)

Country:  Colombia.

A full tuition fee-waiver for one COLFUTURO scholar from Colombia who has an unconditional offer of admission for a 12 month Master’s programme at King’s College London.

COLFUTURO is a joint public and private sector initiative aimed at facilitating the access of Colombian professionals to further education abroad. Created as a non-profit organization on November 21, 1991, its mission is to contribute to the entrance of Colombia into a world undergoing globalization offering information about international education and supporting students to have a successful study experience overseas.

In recognition of the existing and mutual beneficial relationship between King’s College London (KCL) and COLFUTURO, and in support of their aims of the COLFUTURO Programa Semilleros, a collaborative agreement was signed in September 2016, whereby KCL will provide support to one Semilleros de Talento Master’s scholar per year to study for any Master’s programme at KCL.

• Full (100%) tuition fee-waiver from King’s College London for a 12-month full-time Master’s programme at King’s.
• Scholarship loan from COLFUTURO to support living costs/travel etc.
• Open to residents from Colombia only.
• Potential candidates will be from COLFUTURO’s  Programa Semillero de Talentos .
• Candidates must secure an unconditional admissions offer for a 12 month Master’s degree programme at King’s College London.
• Candidates must have completed the established COLFUTURO selection process.

Title: Colfuturo Loan Scholarship Program (King’s College London Scholarships)

Subject areas: A wide range of subjects

COLFUTURO is a joint public and private sector initiative aimed at facilitating the access of Colombian professionals to further education abroad.

The COLFUTURO Scholarship Credit Program is an initiative of economic support for Colombian professionals, with academic excellence, who have the desire to expand their professional career with master’s or doctorate studies in the best universities abroad. Created as a non-profit organization on November 21, 1991, its mission is to contribute to the entrance of Colombia into a world undergoing globalization offering information about international education and supporting students to have a successful study experience overseas.

The program was designed to finance a significant number of Colombian graduate students abroad thanks to an initial endowment of US$13 million. Its main objective is to provide Colombian students with more and better study opportunities and enable them to contribute with their experiences of studying abroad to the economic and social development of Colombia.

Beneficiaries can obtain up to an 80% scholarship on their loan, depending on the fulfillment of the established requirements.

Please note that COLFUTURO are no longer accepting applications for the 2022/23 academic year. Applications for study commencing in the 2023/24 academic year will open on 10th January 2023.

• You can request up to USD 50,000 to be distributed between 9 and 24 months. 
• It is a loan in US dollars.

Candidates must:

• Be Colombian.

Exploring the relationship between gut microbes, phages, metabolites and cardiometabolic health using computational methods

Metabolomics and the gut microbiome are intricately involved in the risk of metabolic diseases. Moreover, there is increasing evidence that metabolites produced by the gut microbiota, such as short-chain fatty acids, bile acids and branch-chain amino acids, are responsible for several metabolic conditions including insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity, thus mediating microbial effects on human health.  Likewise, the gut bacterial communities and their activities can be altered by viruses, including phages, making these biological entities important regulators of the host’s health. For instance, gut virome alterations have been associated with a wide range of diseases. However, the impact of the gut virome on the metabolome and health is still scarce. The objective of this PhD studentship is to identify the contribution of the gut microbiome, virome, and metabolome to cardio-metabolic disease and to investigate their interactions. This will provide a better understand the underlying mechanisms of phage-host interactions and their impact on the human host. 

The PhD student will analyse available data from TwinsUK, a register of UK twins, and from the post-prandial nutritional intervention study ZOE PREDICT-1. These two studies provide a wealth of existing data, including blood and faecal metabolomics, the gut microbiome (shotgun metagenome), detailed cardiometabolic phenotyping at multiple time points, dietary information and post-prandial responses. The virome analysis will be supervised in collaboration with Prof. Li Deng at the Technical University of Munich and Helmholtz Centre Munich in Germany.

Seeking highly motivated early career researchers with a strong statistical/mathematical/bio-informatics background for a PhD studentship in human metabolomics/microbiome at the Department of Twin Research & Genetic Epidemiology, King’s College London. The Department has close links with Divisional and other Research Departments within King’s College, as well as many external Research Organisations. Our group includes over 60 researchers and produces over 70 papers per year in high impact factor journals including Nature, Cell and Nature Genetics and are ranked in the world top 1% of cited scientists. About the Project

The PhD project will focus on the development of innovative electrode materials for non-aqueous aluminium-ion batteries.

Background:  Due to concerns over the environmental impact of lithium-ion batteries and the use of critical materials, alternative battery systems including non-aqueous aluminium-ion batteries (AIBs) have gained increased attention. AIBs are advantageous in that they contain highly abundant aluminium replacing critical lithium, have low cost, and a high theoretical energy. However, AIBs are still in their infancy and further research is needed to understand their detailed working principles and how to control the underlying reactions.

Project details:  This project therefore aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the electrochemistry in AIBs and how to tune their performance. To this end, a systematic study of the impact of the chemical composition and materials engineering on the reaction mechanisms will be conducted. The obtained findings will be then rationalised into a design strategy for sustainable high-performance cathode materials for AIBs. Ultimately, the results of this project shall lead to the development of optimised AIB systems and will have a significant impact on the current battery landscape.

The student will use solid-state and solvothermal synthesis methods for the preparation of the electrode materials. In depth analysis of the materials is done via complementary characterisation techniques such as electrochemical cycling, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and more. Further, a computational component can be added. In addition, also the environmental and economic implications of AIBs will be explored using life cycle assessment and techno-economic modelling.

Requirements:  We are especially interested in students with a strong understanding of materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or relevant topics. Lab experience (chemical synthesis) is required. Additional knowledge in electrochemistry, energy storage systems and/or sustainability-related modelling is welcome but not a requirement.

This interdisciplinary project is positioned at the interface between materials science, engineering and sustainability and provides ample opportunities for internal and external collaborations.

3.5yrs of funding to support a UK Home student for a project in the Department of Engineering.

Background:

The ability of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials to carry large current densities with little or no resistance makes them attractive for providing large rotor magnetic fields in high-power density superconducting electrical machines. Superconducting electrical machines are more efficient, smaller and lighter than conventional ones, and there is great interest in exploiting these properties for next-generation electric aircraft and other electric transport applications to meet ambitious net zero emissions targets.

HTS flux pumps – which exploit the nonlinear resistivity of an HTS wire when subjected to a varying magnetic field – offer the possibility of a brushless exciter for a wire-wound superconducting machine to inject a large DC current into its rotor coils without the need for slip rings/brushes and thermally-inefficient current leads. This would significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of such machines.

Project details:

This project aims to develop state-of-the-art numerical models of the HTS dynamo-type flux pump, in order to design and optimise the device for use as a brushless exciter for superconducting electrical machines in electric aircraft. Thus, in addition, a thorough analysis of electric aircraft requirements will be required to set design specifications.

To validate the numerical models, the project will also involve proof-of-concept experiments, which will ultimately enable us to explore the scaling up of the device for real-world application.

This studentship opportunity is only open to UK Home students applying for the stated PhD project within the Department of Engineering.

The project aims at tackling the fluid dynamics problems that arise in bio-inspired flight/swimming and renewable energy systems.

The Ph.D. will involve part of, but not restricted to, the following topics:

1 –  Exploring the mysteries of bio-inspired flight/swimming. More specifically, the candidate will use theoretical and computational techniques to model natural flight and swimming flow problems, understand the mechanism behind them and provide advanced control and optimization strategy for the bio-mimic systems. The candidate could get involved in the fundamental analytical analysis on vortex shedding and the role of vortices in incompressible flows, the CFD simulations on 2D and 3D bio-inspired flight/swimming cases, the fluid-structure-interaction analysis, the data-driven surrogated model through artificial intelligence (GNNs, RNNs, LSTM, etc.), or the advanced control strategy and optimization.

2 –  Modelling, control, and optimization of the flow in renewable energy systems, specifically wind turbines/farms or proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In more specific terms, the candidate will simulate the fluid or fluid-structure interaction problem in wind turbines/farms or the multi-disciplinary multi-scale problem in PEM fuel cells numerically. The candidate will also deliver the flexible modelling framework for PEMFCs and provide solutions for the next generation PEMFCs by comprehensive optimization in the aspects of flow channel design, cooling strategy, input gas ratio, etc., to achieve high efficiency, reliability, and long durability.

The candidate will work with Dr. Juan Li (first supervisor) and Dr. David Moxey (second supervisor) based at Strand Campus, King’s College London. Dr. Li is experienced in the field of unsteady aerodynamics and renewable energy. To limit global warming to the target of 1.5°C, COP26 ended with a global agreement to accelerate action against climate change this decade alongside many countries aiming for longer-term goals of net zero emissions by 2050. The building sector emissions are historically one of the largest sectors when including direct and indirect emissions from heating, electricity and cooking it accounts for 28% of global emissions, followed closely by the transport sector with 27%. Approximately 60% of emissions from both of these sectors is from consumer energy demands, making personal energy use from residential buildings and cars around 33% of global emissions.

To address personal energy (e.g., heating/cooling, transport, and electricity) decarbonisation, previous studies usually focus on the interaction between these demands, with work completed primarily at national level. However, as energy demands, investment for personal energy decarbonisation is usually paid by customers. It is critical to allow an understanding of if low-carbon technologies will be viable for consumers, and therefore if they will be taken up at mass, which may lead to different results to that which is optimum by regional level long term analysis.

This project is to lead the development of numerical models and analysis tools for consumer energy decarbonisation within regional/global perspectives. Objectives are to 1) analyse domestic energy decarbonisation (electricity, heating and transport) options from the customer’s perspective (one region or across regions in the world), 2) assess if decaronisation will worsen equality of access to energy services (e.g., electricity, water, etc), and /or 3) assess if bottom-up customers’ least cost options are compatible with top-down system optimums. Applications are invited for Faculty Studentships, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Studentships, and Science and Technology Facilities Research Council (STFC) Studentships in the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics at King’s College London, to start in the 2023/24 academic year.

All PhD students are expected to engage with the activities of their department, including contributing to their departments teaching, for which separate payment will be made. Teaching helps students develop skills for future roles and training and mentoring in teaching and learning in higher education will be provided. Successful applicants will be expected to attend the Faculty’s Preparing to Teach course should they undertake additional teaching duties.
