Safe Environment
Our goal is to provide a nurturing safe environment for all students. We strive for all of our students to have a sense of belonging when at UCA.
Relationships
We are highly relational in our approach and interactions with students. We provide a low staff-to-student ratio to facilitate the development and growth of relationships. We see each student as an individual, each with unique needs, concerns, and struggles.
On weekly basis, we monitor and assess each student's grades to identify and diagnose problem areas to address. We look at the data and trends to formulate plans and strategies to help students develop and form positive habits.
Chicagoland Homeschool Network
Find – Share – Connect
Many homeschoolers have recognized the need for coming together to provide greater opportunities for our children. I appreciate the Wikipedia definition of a co-operative in understanding the purpose of these organizations:
“A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise.”
Homeschool co-ops help to meet a variety of needs and challenges faced by individual homeschool families. Each is unique in their schedules, classes, expectations, size, beliefs, missions, requirements, costs, and benefits.
In joining a co-op you should weigh your options carefully. Our goal here is to put this information as close to your fingertips as possible, helping you make the most informed decision.
As I cannot be personally aware of every co-op in the Chicagoland area, this list does not indicate endorsement by me or this site, it is merely a directory for information purposes. I would encourage you to email, visit, and ask questions to assure the best fit for your family.

“I like Dr. Seuss and I feel like it’s a good book,” said Aujunique. “I like to read and I have a lot of books at home.”
Kaylani agreed. “Dr. Seuss is cool. I always love non-fiction books. It’s like real people,” she said.
The youngsters sat next to each other gazing at their books Friday in the Glen Park Academy library where they received a free book as part of School House Children’s Charities’ Mother’s Day Book Give Away.
Students in each grade took turns filing into the library and choosing a book from tables scattered about the colorful space. About 650 books were available.
“Every child and teacher is getting a book to build their home library to promote literacy,” said Brian Andreshak, founder and executive director of School House Children’s Charities and also a first-grade teacher at the school.
Andreshak said he purchased the books with grants from Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and the Legacy Foundation.
This year’s book give-a-way coincides with new Indiana reading mandates that call for the retention of third graders who don’t pass the I-READ annual assessment exam and requires elementary teachers to take an 80-hour professional development course on the science of reading and then pass an exam themselves.
“We’re not happy with it,” Andreshak said the new laws. “It’s just a money-making play. We have to pay $400 if we don’t pass, to take it again.”
Andreshak signed up for the course online and said it took about an hour to get onto the state website.
Instead of the mandates, Andreshak said Indiana should offer universal pre-K. “Build the core skills early on,” he said.
Last year, 52% of the school’s third graders passed the I-READ, the second-best total of Gary’s five elementary schools. Indiana’s statewide pass rate was 82%.
The school’s library was shuttered as part of a wave of cost-cutting moves after the Gary Community School Corp. fell under state control in 2017 because of its dire financial status.
The wave of layoffs and cost cuts helped trim the budget deficit, but left students with shrinking literacy options at their schools.
When Glen Park Academy Principal Eric Worthington arrived in 2021, he made reviving the dormant school library a condition of his hiring.
“I said you can’t have a school with a single-digit reading score and not offer literacy,” Worthington said while watching students choose their books.
He spent about $20,000 of school improvement money to buy books. A vendor, Half Price Books in Orland Park, Illinois, donated 20 cases of new books to restock the shelves.
School officials said last year each elementary was reviving its library with redesigns to highlight a theme. In 2023, just 47% of Gary third graders passed the state reading exam.
Housing challenges, poverty, and relationship breakdowns all lead to more transient children in urban districts like Gary.
Worthington said the high student mobility impacts test scores.
Like Andreshak, Worthington thinks holding back third-graders who don’t pass the I-READ is bad policy that will lead to more dropouts.
“Give us the resources to remediate kids,” Worthington said, citing decreased state funding.
Despite the financial struggles, Worthington is proud of the resurrected library that’s seen the addition of hundreds more books in recent years.
“We probably put $60,000 in books into the library. It’s a showcase. It’s the heart of the school,” Worthington said.
“This room is alive. This was a labor of love,” he said of its return.

Chicago Teachers Union Demands Public Schools Double as Homeless Shelters
Friends Read Free
A 142-page leaked set of demands by the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) reveals a plan for public school facilities to be used as shelters for homeless families.
The new union demands call for using schools as “sheltering places,” a move traditionally outside the purview of bargaining.
“Such sheltering places shall have a night-time custodial team of at least two custodians, along with social service provider staff to consult with families and connect them with housing support and other services for which they may qualify.”
The proposal, which was first reported by Illinois Policy on May 2, demanded that authorities “undertake a facilities assessment process to identify schools with vacant, unused floods ... to be converted into dormitories for unaccompanied youth.”
As part of its demands, the CTU added that it would “partner with trade unions” to create a program that “builds affordable housing” and “green home renovations.”
Demands by the CTU to convert public school buildings into homeless shelters were first floated in 2019 by Lori Lightfoot, then the mayor of Chicago.
Despite that Ms. Lightfoot’s proposal wasn’t implemented, other unions around the country latched on to the idea and began making similar demands, including in Boston, Los Angeles, and Oakland.
The Oakland Education Association’s contract included a memorandum instructing the city’s school district and the union to identify “possible locations that could be developed into housing for unhoused and housing insecure” students.
In Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson, a former teachers union organizer, promised that it would be a top priority for his administration to find accommodations for the city’s homeless, with a particular focus on the more than 20,000 students in Chicago Public Schools he claims currently face housing instability.
“The people of Chicago voted for me because I said that I’m going to address homelessness,” Mr. Johnson told reporters in March.
However, the city is currently facing a fiscal crisis, making new funding for schools difficult to secure.
Earlier this year, the CTU contributed $400,000 to Mr. Johnson’s failed attempt to increase school funding through a real estate tax hike. During the campaign, the CTU received an ethics complaint for lobbying students and pulling them from class to vote. After the measure failed, Mr. Johnson vowed to continue his push to fill the coffers of city schools.
Other demands of the CTU include that boys’ bathrooms carry free menstrual products, that school employees take LGBT education classes, and a “$1,800 per semester stipend to every school to have a Climate Champion.”
“The Climate Champion will coordinate school-based climate justice initiatives“ and ”serve as a liaison to the school for district wide climate justice initiatives,” according to the document.
However, critics claim current demands from the CTU are only the latest stunts employed by officials in an attempt to prop up the nation’s failing public education system as increasing numbers of Americans continue opting out of public school. For more than a decade, the Chicago public school system has been hemorrhaging students—losing nearly 20 percent of total enrollment between 2013 and 2023—mirroring a nationwide trend that accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
State-level statistics for the 2022–2023 school year showed the downward trend continuing, as the drop in public school attendance led many districts to cut staff or even close schools.
Illegal Immigrants
Chicago has maintained its status as a sanctuary city since 1985, when Mayor Harold Washington issued an executive order. The order became law in 2006 when city officials were directed to not ask about immigration status, disclose that information to federal authorities, or deny city services depending on citizenship status.
It has been estimated that the city is housing more than 30,000 illegal immigrants, spread out over 23 shelters throughout the city, with more continuing to arrive daily.
In total, an estimated 68,440 homeless Americans are living on the streets of Chicago, according to the most recent data from 2021—and in the past two years, that number has grown, according to the Chicago Coalition of the Homeless.
The thousands of new arrivals have filled up the city’s homeless shelters, with countless more sleeping on police station floors and staying at airports.
Pastor Corey Brooks, executive director of Project H.O.O.D, a Chicago-based nonprofit seeking to end violence through individual empowerment, told The Epoch Times that the city needs to reprioritize how it spends its limited resources and refocus on its own citizens.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Facing a budget cliff, CPS lets teachers out of school to lobby Springfield
District leaders will join teachers for a lobbying day in the state capital. critics say the day away from classrooms is inappropriate..
Members of the Chicago Teachers Union at a rally in January. Teachers are getting a day off school next week to lobby in Springfield for more funding from state lawmakers.
Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times file
Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union plan to turn up the heat on state lawmakers Wednesday, with more than 600 staff being given the day away from classrooms to go to Springfield to rally for more revenue.
Schools CEO Pedro Martinez and the school board president will join staff at the state capital as the district stares down a budget deficit of more than $400 million this year. So far, the district has yet to say how it is going to balance the budget, instead insisting it is counting on the state to provide more funding.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker has recommended that K-12 education get an additional $350 million in the budget for the next fiscal year starting in July, but the boost falls well short of what would be needed to fully fund schools under the state’s own education formula. CPS gets about $1 billion less per year than called for under the funding formula, and under the proposed budget, many school districts across the state will continue to get far less than what they would need to by fully funded.
School district officials say it is important the district “present a united front” to the governor and lawmakers. The union has been pushing for a joint lobbying day at the state capital for some time. With the ascension of former CTU organizer Brandon Johnson to mayor, union leaders say for the first time in years the school district and the union are on the same page and can make their funding case to the state together.
“It is an important moment,” says CTU Vice President Jackson Potter.
But the plan to release so many teachers from school is coming under fire from critics who called the move inappropriate and have questioned whether it violates ethics policies that prohibit political activity while working for the school district.
But a CPS spokesperson said supporting candidates or referendums is barred but not lobbying for legislation, which is what will happen on Wednesday.
Potter said such lobbying was common practice in the past, especially before the mayor and the union became so adversarial. In fact, when he and CTU President Stacy Davis Gates worked at the now-shuttered Englewood High School 20 years ago, they were given the day off to go to Springfield and push for more revenue.
“So here we are back at it again,” Potter says.
The lobby day comes as principals and local school councils are grappling with how much the district plans to allocate to them next year. Some school communities say they are facing fewer resources and will be forced to lay off staff or do away with programs.
The district has yet to release school level budgets, as they have in the past, so it is impossible to know how widespread the cuts are.
Potter says some of the most compelling voices at the lobby day will be staff who work at selective enrollment and magnet schools. Local School Council members and parents have been vocal about these speciality schools losing resources, as the district prioritizes spending at the neediest schools.
State lawmakers also are considering a bill that would prevent CPS from disproportionately cutting the budgets of selective enrollment and magnet schools.
The budget deficit is coming to a head this year. For the last four years, the district’s structural deficit has been blanketed by $2.8 billion in federal COVID Relief money. Chicago Public Schools used most of that money to hire more staff, including teachers, extra support for struggling learners, counselors and tutors.
Martinez said federal COVID funding has gotten the school district to where it needs to be. But now, as that money runs out, like several school districts CPS is facing a budget cliff.
