How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

200 Words Essay On Summer Vacation

Spending summer vacation.

Some kids take advantage of their time off by getting tuition in the subject they are weak in. When the last bell at school rings, children look forward to the summer holidays that they can turn into summertime fun. Children look forward to summer vacation because it gives them a long respite from the hectic school and homework schedule.

Some individuals take vacations in the country or travel there to see specific historical and recreational sites. It is the time when students put their studies aside and have a fun road trip away from home to a metropolis, a hill station, or any other peaceful location to escape the heat.

My Summer Vacation

Holidays are a fantastic time for us to take the family to hilly locations. Because of our hectic schedules during the year, the summer is an excellent time for us to go on stress-free excursions and spend time in nature. I spent 15 days at my grandparents' house last year when I went to see them.

The best part of the summer break is exploring and making new friends in the community. I relished my visit and picked up some new knowledge while I was there. The remainder of the holidays were spent cooking and playing games under my mother's supervision.

500 Words Essay On Summer Vacation

Things to do in summer vacation.

The length of the summer break makes it easy for someone to grow bored with them. However, you can do many things to keep yourself occupied and interested over the holidays. Here, we'll go through a variety of activities you can do during your summer break in addition to travelling.

You can participate in any exercise classes or summer camps that are open to you. Additionally, they will provide you with everyday activities to keep your interest.

A new habit can also be formed, such as reading, writing, collecting, or observing. These behaviours not only benefit you in the future and broaden your understanding.

In addition, you can enrol in sports clubs to learn your preferred sports, such as taekwondo, boxing, swimming, and athletics.

Benefits Of Summer Vacation

Schools offer summer breaks to give students a brief break. Summer break is the perfect time to study, giving them a respite from the heat and helping the kids recuperate in their weaker subjects and also from the heat that may cause a lot of damage. Everyone often has their way of spending the summer off, but most prefer to travel to cold regions. Students have time throughout the summer to work on academic projects, travel to new locations, and broaden their knowledge. Children can interact with their family members, understand them, and have fun with them.

My Experience With Summer Vacation

My summer holidays began on the first day, and I quickly became bored, mainly because every single one of my friends had left for elsewhere. Because of this, my parents decided to enrol me in a summer camp. My parents helped me enrol in one that our school was holding on its own.

I initially believed it would be useless and equally dull. To my amazement, I was mistaken. One of my favourite life experiences was summer camp. I had the opportunity to participate in various activities, and it was around this time that I first realised I had a gift for painting.

Despite there being no school, we rose early at 7 a.m. Every day, our trainers would teach us something new. I learned karate on the first day, which was entertaining and beneficial. In addition, I developed my skills in volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. My most anticipated portion finally arrived.

We learned how to paint and were taught unique techniques for mastering this art. I picked it up quickly and began to like painting. I will always be grateful to this summer camp for sparking my interest in painting and other activities.

Because it allows them to unwind and spend time with their loved ones doing activities they enjoy, many individuals look forward to the summer. For relaxation and amusement, many people take summer off from work. All institutions and schools are closed for the summer due to the heat. While some people would rather spend their entire day indoors, others would rather spend time outside. For kids, summer vacation could be a particularly memorable time of year.

Summer is the perfect time and season to practice writing and let it feel more like play than work. Today, I've collected a list of summer writing prompts: enough to write one per day of the season!

Teal pool water and yellow float with title 100 Summer Writing Prompts

A few summers ago, I led summer writing camps for kids called Write Camp. It was a blast helping kids of all ages get their fantastical ideas down on paper. My sister signed up my nephew, even though he was a reluctant third grade writer at the time. She wasn't sure he'd even participate.

I assured her that the no-pressure, fun environment would help him imagine writing in a new way, and that he would finish the summer with a story or two and a new understanding of writing.

I'm happy to report I was right! He and his fellow write campers all finished stories and left feeling more confident in their writing skills.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to get students to write correctly that we drain all the fun out of it. We forget that the first step to becoming a strong writer is to actually write. Try these summer writing prompts to help you (or a young writer in your life!) have some writing fun.

Short Essay on My Summer Vacations in English

essay on summer vacation

Summer is the warmest time of the year, and children love it. It’s a fun and exciting time since they get to eat their preferred fruits and ice cream. They also benefit from extended school closures during these holidays.

The holiday is a key phase for young kids. It is a joyous occasion for them. Throughout these vacations, youngsters can do whatever they want. They enjoy spending the vacations with their mom and dad, brothers, and sisters. Summer vacation is the happiest time in students’ lives because they had a break from attending school for a while.

These breaks are extremely important apart from getting away from the heat. Just after tests, students are completely drained and uninterested in learning; therefore, they require rest to improve their health and effectiveness after a hard year of study.

Everyone begins to learn something during the break, whether they are adults or children. Everyone has their way to commemorate the warm holiday; some like to go on a barbeque with their family, others travel to overseas nations, and still, others remain at home and appreciate it.

Most girls prefer to play racquetball, soccer, and other sports during the summer holiday, whereas boys like to play cricket on the empty ground. Several fruits can only be relished during the warmer months, and these fruits contribute to making the summer vacation more exciting. Drinking fresh berries smoothies and eating fresh fruit in the body produces vitality in the body. So I love my summer vacations.

Essay Sample on What I Did This Summer

how I spend my summer vacation essay

If there’s one word that every student loves to hear is “Vacations” because let’s be real, that’s the best time of the year, is it not? The days out almost endlessly before you with nothing like deadlines to meet and quizzes to prepare for on your mind. And if there’s someone who loves vacations more than anyone else, it’s me. And Oh boy, did I have the time of my life the last summer break I got and here is what I did this summer!

As soon as I got done with my exams, the durst thing I did was heave a huge sigh of relief and collapsed on my bed, exhausted from all the work I’d had to put in the semester. After a quick nap (Okay, not so short rest, I dozed off for four hours), I got up and immediately decided to start planning on how I was preparing to spend my vacations. I called my best friend Ali, with whom I had planned a trip since the school year, and immediately started planning and sorting out the details.

We agreed on a trip to the northern areas of the country and began preparations for it immediately. Two of our other very close friends and we were due to leave by the end of the week, and with barely five more days to go got packing immediately. We left by train on a hot Friday afternoon and reached a cool hill station away from the hot and humid city.

And saying that we enjoyed ourselves on that trip would be nothing short of an understatement.

From white water rafting to trekking on narrow mountain trails, we did it all. And before we knew it, our trip came to an end. With a rather sad heart but with numerous memories made to cherish, I came back rather unfortunate that the trip had come to an end but still rather happy that I still had a month and a half worth of lazing around left to do after spending probably the best two weeks on my life up north with my closest buddies.

Now here’s a fun fact about myself. I’m an avid football player, and with my university course load and those pesky exams, I hadn’t gotten much time to play the sport I was so dearly in love with. However, a few days after I returned, the club I played for had registered to participate in a local league, which I was excited about. And in a few days, the tournament kicked off with us cruising through the tournament’s group stages. In the meantime, I had also decided to start with a new hobby – Baking. However, needless to say, that enthusiasm of mine didn’t last very long (two burnt cakes long to be very precise), and thus I decided to focus my attention on some that were, let’s just say, more my cup of tea!

I also promised to make sure I was productive this summer break, so I decided to start a social internship, much to my parent’s delight. I filled the application forms, and the next thing I knew, I breezed through the interview and was due to start the following week. And let me tell you, that was probably one of the best experiences; working with kids at the hospital was an eye-opener for me as to his we take our health for granted. Seeing the smiles on the little kid’s face would leave me feeling accomplished from inside, and I found happiness in the fact that I was finally giving back to the community.

With my internship ending and the tournament coming to a close as well (which we managed to win, thanks to a thrilling penalty shoot-out in the final), my summer break had come to an end too. And as upset, I was at having to go back to my boring life of assignments and exams, I was very pleased that this summer was one of the finest I’ve ever had. I wish I get an opportunity to experience such times every single year.

Most of these core memories that shape you take place in the summer vacation days between June and August when school is out. But now people are suggesting that we rob the next generation of these precious times by getting rid of summer break and instituting a yearlong school schedule. We should keep our current summer break tradition because it allows them to pursue job experience, students with summer break perform better on tests than students with year-long school, and it gives teens an emotional break.

Having a summer break allows students to pursue job opportunities and career experience. In Source E, journalist Anita Balakrishnan explains a summer program designed to give teens career paths. She states “She's taking part in One Summer Chicago Plus, one of many skills-based summer job programs… They help high school students better adapt to the workplace at a time when many young people lack practical career training.” This shows that while out of school, students can pursue other forms of education like career-oriented training. A lot of education lost during summer break can be made up for or improved upon with these summer job programs. Source E also quotes “While many of her high school classmates are working cash registers and fast-food grills this summer, Gabriela Lacy has a job not typically seen as a teenage rite of passage:”…." Initially I just wanted to earn extra cash for my household," many students want to get jobs so they can afford college, cars, or in Gabriela’s case, support the household and family. School can interfere with these opportunities, causing tighter work shifts, less flexible hours, and more stress overall. Having an extended school-free break gives teens the chance to focus on their job and earn an income.

Students who have summer break have scored higher on standardized tests than students with year-long school. In source C, a bar graph illustrates the average standardized test scores from schools in LA with traditional schedules and Schools with year-long schedules. The schools with traditional schedules consistently scored above the 700 points mark. This point range is expected from a regular public school providing optimal education for its students, showing that even with summer break, the schools can still manage to reach that standard. Source C also provides a Bar graph for the average standardized test score for students in year-long school. The average score was under 700 points for every one of the counties, painting a crystal clear picture that students in year-long school are doing worse academically than students who have a summer break. Kids are like computers: if you leave them on and running at full capacity, they overheat and process information slower. You need to let them rest, and reboot, and cool down for optimal function. This is what summer break does, and why students perform much better with it.

The opposition's main claim for getting rid of summer vacation for “extended learning time” is that students lose knowledge over the break and need more education to participate in the global economy. This is exactly how Granderson puts in source A when he says “Summer camps, even academic ones can have too much emphasis on fun…No offense to the parents whose kids are playing basketball in a rec center right now. But we’re in a global economy.” When he states this, he’s prioritizing money and the economy above students' happiness and mental health.  Author Westneat rebuts this by stating In sours B “The real reason schools created the break in the 19th century was the belief that too much schooling impaired a child’s and a teacher's health.” This evidence of how summer vacation started shows that it is necessary for both students' and teachers' health. I can understand Granderson's push for extended learning time, but putting the global economy before our own citizens' health and well-being is selfish and inhumane. Extended learning time should be optional for students who need extra help or want to get a head start. It should not ruin summer for students who are already doing well In school.

Imagine if you had no summer vacation growing up: you would lose all memories of summer camp with friends, getting the opportunity to get job experience, and missing the much-needed break from school. Without summer break our children would turn into emotionally wrecked husks, with their only purpose being to. We need to fight against this oppressive and selfish movement.

Essay on My Plans for Summer Vacation for Students and Children

500 words essay on my plans for summer vacation.

Summer vacations are one of the most awaited times of the year. The school-going children especially look forward to it so they can get a break from their studies and monotonous routine. Mostly, a beach comes to one’s mind when we think of summer vacations. You go out on the beach to have fun and enjoy your day in the water or getting tanned. Similarly, people also visit hilly stations to get a sigh of relief from the hot weather. My plans for this summer vacation are a bit different. As I have mostly gone on trips earlier, this time I want to make the most of my vacations.

Yoga Classes

When we were discussing as to where to visit this summer vacation, I chimed in to suggest we cut the trip short this year so it will make time for me to pursue my interests. I plan on taking yoga classes this summer vacation. Yoga has been very interesting to me and I have tried my hand at it a number of times. However, as they say, it requires practice and technique, I thought to enroll in classes that will teach me this art form professionally.

There are numerous benefits of yoga which I wish to earn. It is known to increase the concentration power of people. I have a hard time focusing on my studies, so I thought yoga can help me with it. There is an organization that organizes yoga classes every year with participants coming in from all over the state. I have also convinced my friends to take the classes with me so they will be more fun.

In addition, yoga makes a person flexible. As I wish to become a dancer, I need to be thoroughly flexible. Thus, yoga will surely help me achieve my dream . This way I can shoot two birds with one stone. Most importantly, yoga inculcates discipline in a person. I hope these yoga classes will make me a better and improved version of myself. Therefore, I have decided to take up yoga classes for my overall development.

Dance Classes

As I have mentioned earlier I always wanted to become a dancer. Due to my school and coaching, I never get time to work on my dream. However, this summer vacation I plan to finally work on this dream of mine.

I have already talked to the instructor who will be taking up the dance classes. This way, I will go to my yoga classes in the early morning and dance classes in the evening. Dance classes will help me polish my skills and also help me perform better.

Moreover, I lack confidence in performing on stage. Thus, I need these classes, even more, hoping they will instill confidence in me to perform on stage without any fear. Therefore, this year, I intend to utilize my time to the fullest and learn new things that will help me grow as a person.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, summer program application essays - need examples.

Hey guys, I'm in the process of applying for some summer programs, but I'm having a hard time with the application essays. Could any of you share some examples of successful essays for summer programs from previous years? I'd really appreciate it!

Hey! I understand that writing essays for summer programs can be challenging. While I can't provide specific examples of successful essays due to privacy reasons, I can definitely offer you some guidance on what you should focus on in your essays.

1. Be personal: Write about genuine experiences, passions, or goals that are unique to you. This is your opportunity to let the program organizers get to know who you are, and why you'd be an excellent fit for the program.

2. Tailor the essay to the program: Make sure to do thorough research on the program you're applying to, understanding the specific values, themes, and opportunities it offers. Then, connect these to your own interests, achievements, and aspirations. Show the program organizers that you understand what they're about, and that you're applying because you genuinely feel you would be a good match.

3. Describe your impact: Just as with college application essays, summer program essays should showcase your ability to make a positive impact on your community, school, or the world in general. Provide detailed examples of how you've made a difference in the past, and make sure to explain how the summer program will further empower you to continue making an impact.

4. Keep it concise and focused: Since program essays are usually quite short, you'll want to make every word count. Be clear and direct in your writing, and avoid going off on tangents or including unnecessary details. Stick to the main points and key examples that support your overall message.

5. Proofread and edit: Finally, ensure your essays are polished and well-structured. Find someone, like a trusted teacher or mentor, to provide feedback and help you refine your writing. Make sure you address any grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors to present the best possible version of your essay.

While I can't share specific essays, I hope these tips will give you a solid foundation for writing your summer program essays. Good luck!

Utilizing Spring Break

How I Write and Learn

By Aiden, a Writing Center Coach

I’ve been counting down the days until Spring Break—as I write this, we’ve reached single digits! I can’t wait to spend time with my parents and friends without the stress of classes. If you’re like me, you might be a little bit worried about balancing assignments and a fun time off. I’m here to share my strategies for making sure that my rest and relaxation is not sacrificed to my rigorous coursework.

If I don’t take time during Spring Break to step away from my commitments as a student, I’d be risking burnout. While Spring Break is only a week long, I have found that its proximity to LDOC makes it just the sort of break I need! I’m going to get to visit with people, play fun board games, perhaps marathon a show or two, and take time for myself! Note that I am not planning to spend every second getting as much of an essay done as possible.

The tips I’ll share below are approaches I use to guide myself away from the urge to spend all of the break dedicated to class work or other school-related commitments. I have found that the most effective utilization of Spring Break doesn’t have to be doing as much school work as possible: it can be caring for yourself.

Making Progress while Practicing Self-Care.

Set out a planner for upcoming assignments and other commitments

One resource I love is the Writing and Learning Center’s “Semester At-A-Glance” calendar! My roommate and I both have one up on our walls. They use theirs to track assignment due dates and exam days, and I use mine more as a general guide to see progress throughout the semester. I like to add all my exams and large assignments to the calendar at the beginning of the semester. Then I can look back to see not only what I have coming up, but also what I’ve accomplished. The “Semester At-A-Glance” calendar is great because it also includes Spring Break!

It is particularly helpful to plan around Spring Break since it is a short amount of time but an important opportunity to practice self-care!. Looking at the calendar can help me plan certain days for certain activities.. I can see when I’ll be traveling, what days I am free, and where I have blocks of time that I can reserve for work.

Another approach I use is making a to-do list. Earlier this semester, I found myself working on multiple academic and personal projects at once and felt a little stressed out. I ended up making a to-do list of what I needed to complete for each class and when each was due. It looked something like this:

  • Internship application due Feb 2 2. ENGL assignment due Feb 3 3. CHIN test Feb 5

I did not start off with a lot of detail. For my list, I first focused on the major tasks and the deadlines I set for myself.  I put my list on a post-it note and put it up in my room where I would see it everyday. This was helpful in making sure I was aware of my deadlines without having to remember when they were. Having deadlines on my calendar and in a to-do  list just made sure that I would not miss anything important!

For Spring Break, a calendar or to-do list might include things like internship/job applications, midterm assignments and exams, end-of-semester work and exams, and more. Rather than letting myself worry about what I have to do over the rest of the semester during Spring Break, I will create a clear plan to help me figure out what are my must do’s   and what can wait until after Spring Break.

Track current progress on each task

The next part of this strategy for me is to add more detail! Breaking a project down into little steps can make it feel less daunting overall. One way to do this is by using SMART goals; this approach offers a guide to make sure that a plan is specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and time sensitive. Also, in the context of Spring Break, I can assign certain aspects of a project to a specific day. This helps me to avoid procrastination and develop a more balanced workload habit.

Having a more detailed schedule helps me to spread my work over the entire break, while still making sure to leave plenty of time for myself! Spring break is a necessary and much welcome break, but it also isn’t as long as winter or summer! A big assignment like a large project or midterm paper due the week after break can be very scary. If I’m nervous about it, I might hesitate and not start writing until the end of the break, creating a lot of anxiety and stress for myself, and potentially contributing to burnout and exhaustion.

However, if I take an approach that breaks the assignment down into smaller chunks, it feels more manageable and I am more likely to do them and spread them out. Rather than leaving it at “midterm paper due,” I might set up something like this:

Midterm paper due March 22 1. Brainstorm – Monday 2. Outline – Tuesday 3. Intro + thesis – Wednesday 4. Body paragraphs first draft – Thursday 5. Revise existing writing – Friday 6. Conclusion and final review – Saturday

I can also switch it up if I know there is a certain day of Spring Break I want to dedicate more time to other activities, like hanging out with friends. Knowing what I have to do, even if it seems like a lot, can help me to relax. If I am worried about forgetting something or prone to catastrophizing with the amount of work I  have on my plate, having a list of everything laid out can help keep me calm.

Spring Break Work Life Balance

Breaks don’t need to be deserved or earned; resting is essential to wellbeing and a sign of your maturity and preparedness for college life and beyond

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” —Audre Lorde. This and other ideas relating to radical self-care can show us that caring for ourselves is necessary to maintain our ability to care for others.

If at the end of Spring Break I find myself stressed out and studying for a test at the last minute, I might consider staying up really late and sacrificing my sleep to counteract my procrastination. But I can take a step back and consider if the “studying” I attempt while exhausted will really be more helpful to me than getting decent sleep and relying on the other work I have done in class and prior test preparation.

I apply this approach to general life as well. Realizing when I  need a break before it’s absolutely necessary is a skill that has taken time and  practice. I plan to let Spring Break be a time for prioritizing myself as an individual rather than solely as a student . It’s also important for me to have a support system that helps encourage these practices and good habits.

Setting up things with others can be fun!

Some examples that first come to my mind are planning to have a game night, watching a show, doing a craft, spending time with a pet, etc. In all, it’s important that these are all concrete things that you enjoy and want to do.

Stereotypical self-care things like marathoning a TV show or doing a facemask can be fun, but for me it is also important to do activities that energize me in other ways. For example, hanging out with friends, spending time outside, doing an activity I haven’t been able to make time for during the semester like an art or craft, or whatever else brings me joy. These are things that I can plan an entire day for if I want, or integrate into a day where I’m also working on school things. I often find it motivating to have afternoon commitments; if I want to finish two pages of an essay one day and am going to an event with a friend at dinnertime, that sets a clear time for me to complete my work.

I hope these tips will be helpful! Have fun over Spring Break and try using a strategy shared here to make sure that school work isn’t all you do over the week. I know I can’t wait to go home and keep my laptop shut for at least a full day.

Essay on Semestral Break

Students are often asked to write an essay on Semestral Break in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Semestral Break

What is semestral break.

A semestral break is a short holiday for students in the middle of the school year. After months of study, it’s a time to rest. Schools close for a few weeks, giving students a chance to recharge.

Time with Family and Friends

During the break, you can spend more time with family and friends. You can play games, visit places, or just enjoy being at home. It’s a good period to create fun memories with loved ones.

Hobbies and Interests

This break is also great for hobbies. You can read books, draw, play sports, or learn something new. It’s a chance to do what you love without schoolwork.

Getting Ready for School

Near the end of the break, it’s smart to prepare for school again. Organizing your books and planning your schedule can make returning to school easier and less stressful.

250 Words Essay on Semestral Break

A semestral break is a short holiday that comes in the middle of the school year. Schools divide the year into two parts, called semesters, and this break marks the end of the first half. It is a time for students to rest from their studies and enjoy time away from school.

Time to Relax

During the semestral break, students get a chance to relax. There’s no need to wake up early for school or spend hours on homework. Instead, you can sleep in, play games, or watch your favorite TV shows. It’s important to take this time to recharge your energy for the next semester.

Fun with Family and Friends

This break is a great time to hang out with family and friends. You can visit relatives, go on trips, or just spend time at home together. It’s also a good chance to make new friends or catch up with old ones. Sharing fun moments with others makes the break special.

Learning New Things

Even though school is out, learning doesn’t have to stop. You can learn to cook, draw, or play a new sport. Maybe you can read books or learn about interesting topics online. Picking up new skills or hobbies can be exciting and rewarding.

Getting Ready

Finally, the semestral break helps you get ready for the next part of the school year. You can organize your study area, prepare your school supplies, and set goals. When school starts again, you’ll feel prepared and eager to learn.

In short, the semestral break is a wonderful time for students. It allows you to unwind, have fun, learn new things, and prepare for the challenges ahead. Enjoy your break and make the most of it!

500 Words Essay on Semestral Break

A semestral break is like a pause in the school year. It usually happens in the middle, after you’ve finished half of your classes. Think of it as a halftime break in a football game. Just like players get some rest during halftime, students get a break from schoolwork and classes. This time off allows students to relax, recharge, and get ready for the next half of the school year.

The Joy of Free Time

During the semestral break, you suddenly have a lot of free time. There’s no need to wake up early for school or do homework in the evening. You can use this time to do fun things that you usually can’t do because of school. You might want to play more with your friends, visit family members, or even learn something new, like how to bake cookies or ride a bike. It’s also a great time to catch up on reading books or watching your favorite cartoons.

Going on Trips

Many families plan trips during the semestral break. Since everyone is free from school or work, it’s a perfect time to travel somewhere together. You might go to the beach, visit a farm, or explore a new city. Trips can be exciting because you see new places, meet different people, and try foods you’ve never had before. Traveling is also a fun way to learn things that you don’t learn in school.

Time to Reflect

The break is not just for fun and games. It’s also a good time to think about how you’re doing in school. You can look back at your grades and decide if you need to work harder in some subjects. If you’re having trouble with math or reading, you can use some of your break to get better at it. This doesn’t mean you have to study all day. Just a little bit of practice every day can make a big difference.

Helping Out at Home

With no school, you can also help more at home. Maybe you can learn to do new chores or take care of a pet. Helping out is a good way to show your family that you’re growing up and can handle more responsibilities. Plus, it feels good to help others and be a useful part of the family team.

Getting Ready for School Again

As the break comes to an end, it’s time to prepare for school. This means fixing your sleeping schedule if you’ve been staying up late and making sure your school supplies are ready. It’s also a good idea to set some goals for the next half of the school year. Maybe you want to get better at a subject, join a school club, or make new friends.

The semestral break is a special time for students. It gives you a chance to relax, have fun, and do things you don’t usually have time for. Whether you’re traveling, learning new things, or just enjoying your hobbies, the break is an important part of your school year. Remember to use it wisely and get ready to return to school with fresh energy and new goals.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Tax Breaks: Was It The Best Tax Filing Season In Years?

The IRS offers a breather for beneficiaries of inherited IRAs, IRS plays ghost(employer)buster, tackling O.J. Simpson’s estate and more

Person sleeping with his dog in a hammock in beautiful summer scene

Tax Day came and went this week for most taxpayers (those of us still on extension got a little breather—except for the check we had to write). As of April 5, 2024 —the last date for which data is available—the IRS had received 101,849,000 tax returns, compared to 101,320,000 returns received as of April 7, 2023, a .5% increase. (☆) That’s on pace to meet estimates, as the IRS had previously announced that they expected more than 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by Tax Day, April 15, 2024. (☆)

So far, however, the number of refunds issued remains lower than those from last year. The IRS has issued 66,799,000 tax refunds as of April 5, 2024, compared to 69,095,000 tax refunds issued as of April 7, 2023, a decrease of 3.3%. That works out to $201.117 billion in total refunds, compared to $198.868 billion in 2023, a decrease of 1.1%.

(You can read what the IRS Commissioner had to say about the season below. And once the data completely settles from the season, I’ll give you a final update.)

Anecdotally, a number of taxpayers and tax professionals have noted that they’ve seen fewer refunds all around, and more checks that had to be written. My sense, as I tweeted earlier this week , is that it's a combination of getting used to the "old" pre-Covid rules and continued confusion over the revamped W-4. And there were a lot of job changes last year.

A little related Tax Day advice? If the day flew by and you missed it, or didn’t get around to filing a return, don’t give up. You can still file. Missing the deadline isn’t the end of the world, but since the failure-to-file penalty is based on time, the sooner you can file, the better.

(Remember that some taxpayers automatically get extra time, including those who are out of the country. Those taxpayers may also have additional filing obligations . U.S. tax laws cast a wide net, ensnaring U.S. tax "residents" not only on their worldwide income, but also requiring special tax reporting for foreign accounts and assets. Whether it's dividends from a French firm, profits from selling property in Cairo, or even winnings from a Polish lottery, all income is fair game for taxation. The intricate maze of U.S. tax requirements opens the door to harsh penalties for missteps.)

If you filed but didn’t pay, my advice remains the same: pay when you can. And if you can't pay the entire amount, pay something. Don’t put it off now that Tax Day is over—the failure-to-pay penalty is also calculated on time. Plus, interest will also accrue on your balance due (yes, on top of the penalty).

If you’re looking for a refund for the tax year 2020—the IRS estimates more than $1 billion in refunds remain unclaimed—remember that you have until May 17, 2024. Typically, the filing deadline to claim old refunds is April 15, the "normal" filing date. But the three-year window for 2020 unfiled returns was postponed to May 17, 2024, due to the pandemic.

Speaking of refunds, many business owners are still waiting for their Employee Retention Credit (ERC) refund. If you haven’t received yours yet, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) may be able to help you navigate through the process. The TAS is a resource for taxpayers who have not been able to get relief from the IRS through the regular administrative channels.

Business owners also have a responsibility to keep excellent payroll records. According to the IRS, some employers withhold tax from employee paychecks but do not remit those taxes to the authorities. Employers who intend to cheat may withhold taxes from employees but not file employment tax returns with the IRS or make federal tax deposits. Not filing the forms makes it hard to catch the employers—it's as if they didn't exist. When that happens, the IRS refers to them as ghost employers. In June 2020, the IRS established the Ghost Employer Project to investigate this noncompliance—before the initiative, the IRS had not attempted to detect ghost employers. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, or TIGTA, recently released a report evaluating those efforts. Their findings? There is more work to be done . (☆)

The IRS was able to increase their scrutiny of payroll taxes by using technology to examine data—something that’s increasingly available. In 2016, the average company managed 162.9 terabytes (TB) of data. Now, in 2024, roughly 2.5 quintillion bytes worth of data are generated each day, with over 44 zettabytes of data in the entire digital universe. Those figures are expected to grow even larger, thanks to generative AI. Amid a jumble of value-added taxes, digital taxes, and corporate minimum rates, some argue the solution may be as simple as shifting the tax burden to one of corporations’ most valuable resources: data. Is it feasible? Could it work? And what would it look like?

Finally, many of you know that I cut my teeth in the tax world on estates (including a a stint with the IRS estates division). I love a great estates-related story and I was immediately interested in chatter this week related to O.J. Simpson’s estate.

Here's what happened: Simpson’s executor, Malcolm LaVergne, raised some eyebrows when he suggested that he would do everything in his power to keep estate funds away from the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown who won a civil judgment against Simpson years ago. LaVergne later walked his statement back somewhat—and for good reason. Under Nevada law, where Simpson’s will was probated, expenses get paid first and then debts like the civil judgment before the beneficiaries of the estate are paid.

The estate may also be subject to probate in other jurisdictions, like California and Florida. Before he lived in Nevada, Simpson lived in Florida—a debtor-friendly state. Nevada is also fairly friendly to debtors during lifetime, but the rules for estates leave little room for discretion. The result? It's complicated . (☆)

(For even more good stuff on estates—and new information on inherited IRAs—be sure to scroll down to A Deeper Dive below.)

That's a lot of news for post-Tax Day, and there's more to come (next week, we'll have info on a new tax form, 2023 tax stats from the IRS, and a look at laws on the books that may leave you responsible for your relatives' medical and nursing home debt).

Thanks for reading!

One Of The Best Tax Seasons?

IRS Engagement with taxpayers increased in 2024

With the ink not even dry on some tax returns, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel has deemed it "one of the best tax seasons the nation has seen in years." (☆)

Werfel delivered the message as part of an end-of-filing season message. He touted improvements, including improved phone service, increased hours at walk-in sites, and more use of its virtual assistant tool (a fancy way of saying chatbot) on key IRS.gov pages. Werfel says, "It's clear that we're seeing historic improvements in taxpayer service levels, and the agency is rebounding from some very tough and lean years during the past decade."

The Commissioner says these improvements are the result of the Inflation Reduction Act funding. The Act significantly boosted funding for the IRS, guaranteeing tens of millions of dollars over its operating budget for improvements and enforcement.

But, Werfel says, "there should be no mistaking that we need to do more at the IRS."

Money saving for retirement

One of the things that I tell my clients is that almost everything is fixable. Sometimes, however, time limits impact how fixable something might be. That's exactly the focus of this week's question. A reader wrote, in part:

I have a question for my mom. She was unemployed for most of 2023, and decided to withdraw her IRA and close the account. She didn't have to pay any early withdrawal penalties... but believed that since she withdrew the money during the year she was unemployed she would only have to pay taxes at the lowest tax rate.

Due to the total withdrawal of $250k, she's having to pay significantly more than anticipated. Is there any way to file taxes to spread the distribution over multiple years and pay taxes at the lower income tax bracket? When you make a withdrawal from your retirement account, it results in a taxable event.

And, since we have a progressive tax system (you can see the 2024 tax rates here ), as you report more money in a single tax year, your tax rate goes up. Your mom owes more because the extra income pushed her into a higher bracket.

Under the rules, if you take an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA or retirement plan, you can roll all or part of it into an IRA or a retirement plan within 60 days and not be subject to tax on the amount that landed back in the plan. You can also redeposit the money back into the existing IRA. If that happens in that 60-day window, the IRS will treat you as though you had never taken the money out in the first place—you'll owe no tax.

If you miss the 60-day window, unfortunately, you're out of luck on the tax side.

And while there is no way to spread out the tax after the fact, you can enter into an installment agreement with the IRS to pay the tax over time if you can't pay all at once. Check with the IRS or your tax professional for more details.

A Deeper Dive

The IRS is allowing taxpayers some extra grace related to interpreting the RMD rules for inherited IRAs. (☆)

By law, you are required to withdraw funds from your retirement account each year after you reach age 73 (climbing to 75 in 2033). That amount is referred to as a required minimum distribution, or RMD. Typically, the amount you're required to withdraw is figured each year by dividing your previous end-of-year account balance by your life expectancy.

If you inherit a retirement account, however, the rules are a bit different. Under current law, if you inherit a retirement account, you can withdraw all the money as a lump sum or over ten years. Some beneficiaries interpreted the language to mean they could wait until the end of the 10-year window to make a complete withdrawal—meaning that they didn't have to make regular withdrawals every year for 10 years. The proposed guidance suggested the opposite.

The IRS has now issued Notice 2024-35 , which—you guessed it—extends the relief through 2024 and makes clear that the final regulations will apply no earlier than the 2025 distribution calendar year. The relief applies to an RMD that would have been required if the IRA owner died in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023 and on or after the IRA owner's required beginning date.

(Different rules apply to IRAs inherited before the new law took effect in 2020—those beneficiaries may still stretch withdrawals out over their life expectancies.)

In more retirement news, more than 70% of Americans are worried that higher taxes will be imposed on future distributions from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, according to a recent study. That’s one reason a high percentage of participants in the survey said effectively managing taxes on retirement income is a priority. Widespread misinformation and misunderstandings—like focusing only on income tax rates—may keep people from considering IRA conversions. Another misconception is to wait until the end of the year, but waiting could cause you to miss opportunities.

And one more piece of retirement advice —while downsizing may be a smart financial move, it could also be a financial setback if you’re not careful. When downsizing, you may need to factor in tax changes, including the impact of selling your home and how tax laws in another state may be different than those in your current state. If you're thinking of taking the plunge, ask questions—your tax pro or financial planner can help.

USA flag and American dollars.

Taxpayers are still adjusting to changes as a result of the 2017 tax reform laws (there's still no home office deduction for wage earners). In addition to causing confusion, those changes are not bringing in enough revenue to offset spending. What does that mean going forward? The Congressional Budget Office—the official government forecaster—released their latest deficit and debt forecasts for the next decade. And no surprise to anybody, says Tax Analysts Chief Economist Martin Sullivan, the outlook is quite gloomy. Our current deficit is about 5% of GDP, and it's going to continue to grow to about 6% of GDP—about $2 trillion a year of extra debt.

You can find out more about the numbers, the research, and what it means for the future of tax policy in the latest Tax Analysts podcast episode (transcript available).

Positions and Guidance

The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) expressed its strong support of H.R. 8007 , the Disaster Tax Lookback Parity Act of 2024, in a letter to Representatives George Murphy (R-NC) and Jimmy Panetta (D-CA), who are original sponsors of the bill. Taxpayers impacted by disasters typically do not have the benefit of the lookback period for claiming credits and refunds being aligned with a postponed return filing due date, which this legislation would provide for all federally declared disasters.

The AICPA submitted a letter to the IRS requesting clarification and workarounds for the 990 Series Form instructions used by tax-exempt organizations. The AICPA’s recommendations include the clarification of instructions; the simplification, addition, and re-wording of language; and the updating of forms and instructions.

The AICPA submitted a letter to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) providing feedback on a proposed ruling and addressing concerns regarding the implications of the proposed regulations on Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs). The letter references FINCEN-2024-0006 and RIN 1506-AB58, Anti-Money Laundering/Countering the Financing of Terrorism Program and Suspicious Activity Report Filing Requirements for Registered Investment Advisers and Exempt Reporting Advisers as proposed by FinCEN.

I hope you’ll get to know some of our staff and contributors. Since I reported on ghost employers this week, I'd love to know: What's the scariest movie you've ever seen?

Kelly Phillips Erb (Senior Writer, Tax): I'm easy to frighten. But the first scary movie that I remember seeing was Vertigo —it was terrifying. Hitchcock was a movie genius.

Emma Whitford (Writer, Education): The Shining —It's the only scary movie I've seen or will see. I'm a chicken.

Amber Gray-Fenner (Contributor, Tax): Blair Witch Project . Will not watch again. And I like horror movies.

Mitchell Martin (Editor, Digital Assets): Scariest movie: The original Alien .

Virginia La Torre Jeker (Contributor, Tax): The scariest movie: Silence of the Lambs.

Andrew Leahey (Contributor, Tax): The scariest movie I have ever seen was one I have been trying to identify for years. It would have been on basic cable circa 1989, and it involved little alien creatures (not Gremlins !) eating a family. The scene that is forever etched in my memory involves a small boy overhearing the critters eating his mother, and accidentally rolling a baseball down the stairs to the creatures. He is unsure if they have noticed, when the ball is returned up the stairs covered in blood. Might be misremembering, but I've popped awake thinking about that scene at least once per calendar year for the last 35 years. ( Author's note : I'm stumped, too. If you know what Andrew is talking about, drop me a line!)

Key Figures

$1.7 billion

That's the estimated tax liability attributed to over 162,000 potential ghost employers as part of IRS efforts to identify employers who are not properly remitting taxes that have been withheld from employee wages.

Trivia Answer

The answer is (C) cell phones.

In 2011, the IRS issued Notice 2011-72, which provided guidance on treating employer-provided cell phones as an excludible fringe benefit.

Under the guidance, where employers provide cell phones to their employees or where employers reimburse employees for business use of their personal cell phones, tax-free treatment is available without recordkeeping requirements. The guidance does not apply to the provision of cell phones or reimbursement for cell phone use that is not primarily business-related (those are generally taxable).
