Do you want to deliver a heartfelt speech for a colleague who’s leaving work but are unsure how to do it? 

Don’t worry. You’re not alone. 

For many people, retirement from a place of work can be a very emotional experience. Especially if they’ve been at a place of work for a long time, leaving it–and the people they’ve worked with–can be quite tough. After all, with retirement,  an employee is going to be leaving his or her employment permanently.

And this emotional roller-coaster is not exclusive to a the person retiring. 

Their co-workers, too, can land a seat at it. Especially if they were close to the person retiring or are quite close to retiring themselves. 

But even if you’re not at the front seat of the rollercoaster and simply wish to deliver a nice speech to a friendly co-worker finally leaving the company, finding the right words for the speech can be a confusing task. 

Writing and delivering a speech is a tough job.

A good retirement speech needs to factor in many elements. Farewell speeches are important as they express to the person leaving the place of work gratitude for the effort, time, and experiences they’ve provided to the company. They usually include a person’s past history, achievements, services, etc. And are an essential element of a good place of work.

What Is A Retirement Speech? 

A retirement or farewell address is a speech that is delivered by or for an individual leaving a work position or workplace. They are often used by public figures like politicians, actors, etc. as a capstone to their career, or as statements from persons giving reasons for their leaving. 

In a workplace, a farewell speech is often given by a junior member of the organization. A friend, colleague, or junior member are a few common choices for delivering a farewell speech. Sometimes, if a person has done remarkable work or has left an imprint on the organization, the speech might be given by a senior member of the company. 

As mentioned above, retirement speeches are delivered to thank an employee leaving a workplace for all the time, effort, and experience that was offered by them to the company throughout their tenure, and is a necessary element of a good and progressive place of work that values its employees.

What Do I Need To Include In A Retirement Speech? 

1. Talk About Their Achievements

Who doesn’t like reminded about the good stuff they’ve achieved in life, right? This can be especially important during a farewell speech, as a way of thanking the collegue for the positive elements that they’ve added to the company over the years. 

While it’s a good idea to add big achievements, you can also make it more special for the collegue by mentioning something small that they might have done that got overshadowed by all the other big stuff. The leaving person might not even be aware of doing it! 

For example, if the collegue was someone who could always make people’s Mondays feel like Fridays, then that’s a pretty big achievement too, right? Make sure to include it in your speech!

2. Narrate Anecdotes and Stories 

What’s an emotional speech without a story or two, eh? 

Anecdotes and stories are not just a great way of making a speech lively and interesting, but they can also make the speech more personal both; for the person leaving and the ones staying behind. 

So, try to include at least 2-3 anecdotes in your speech. 

If you don’t know the co-worker that well or are simply unsure of what to include, you can reach out to someone who was close to the person retiring and ask for their input. 

Regardless, stories have the power to really captivate an audience as long as we use the 3 core elements of

3. Don’t Forget The Jokes 

Humor is a great way to level up any speech, and a retirement speech is no exception to it’s charm. Humor works to lighten the overall mood, which can be quite heavy for a day like this. 

So, try to sprinkle a couple of jokes throughout your speech. You can even combine jokes and anecdotes and tell a funny story –maybe a memorable incident that happened with the retiring co-worker in the past!

 4. Add A Personal Touch 

Don’t just copy paste a random speech from Google. Instead, take your time with the speech. Remember that retirement is a cornerstone in most people’s life, and treat it as such. 

Adding little personal details here and there–little quirks that your colleague had, or memorable moments they had at the workplace–goes a great way to make the person in question feel important, liked, and most importantly: appreciated for their efforts. 

5. Talk About Their Personality 

What was the colleague like? What made them different from other people in the workplace? If there was one word that you could describe their personality, what would it be? 

Talking about their personal qualities makes the person retiring more real. It reminds them–and the people listening–that they were not just another part in a corporate machine, but a human being. That is someone with feelings, memories, good days, and bad days–just like you. 

6. Don’t Neglect Speaking About The Future 

While it’s important to give due importance to the past while delivering a retirement speech, it’s also imperative to not neglect talking about what’s ahead i.e the future. Often, people can get so fixated on the good stuff in the past that they don’t notice the amazing stuff coming up ahead. 

Is there something the person leaving always wanted to do, but couldn’t because they were so busy with work? 

Say, did they always want to go to a nature retreat, spend more time with their spouse, or work at that bar at the end of the street? 

Well, now would be the time to bring that up! 

Don’t just ramble on about stuff that’s already done. Talk about the opportunities coming upz too! 

7. Include mementos and gifts 

If a colleague is leaving work–especially if they’re someone who’s contributed a lot to a place–chances are, they’re going to be given a small memento for their work all these years. This can be given by anyone–another co-worker, you, or even higher-ups. 

So, make sure to check in with your co-workers about the status of a memento. If it’s going to be included, you can include a small introduction leading up to the handing of the gift right into your speech end. 

8. When In Doubt, Ask 

This piece of advice can come especially in handy if you didn’t know the former co-worker that well. If you’re unsure whether to include a personal detail or not–or are simply in a dearth of personal information–go ahead and ask someone else for their input. This someone else can be anyone: a close friend of the colleague, a family member, your boss, or even the colleague themself! 

Don’t be shy to ask questions. 

Sample Retirement Speech 

Dear Hannah,

Today is the day you retire from St.Mary’s Public School after over twenty years of teaching English to high-schoolers—most of whom had no interest in learning anything in the first place!

In spite of this hindrance, you never ceased delivering the best you possibly could. When you first started working with us, you were simply a substitute teacher that the students saw occasionally. Remember your first day and the prank that the students played on you?

The entire class banded together and attacked you with a string of questions—none of which had anything to do with English, by the way. But instead of waiting for you to answer, the moment you opened your mouth, the student pretended to fall asleep!

Once you got the hang of it, you turned into a prankster yourself! You played along with the class by listening to a student begin a question but then acted like you’d fallen asleep—just like they had when you were trying to answer—before they finished it.

It was the first time a teacher had chosen to not only indulge their silly pranks but also pranked them right back! Instead of punishing them, you tried to understand them, to relate to them. And you continued trying to do so for the rest of the week.

The students fell in love with you that day, and their admiration for you only grew over the next week. I know this because a few days later when I showed up for class, nobody wanted to learn anything about Shakespeare!

And yet, you not only managed to befriend the students, but you also became friends with the teachers!

You were the only topic of discussion—both, in the classroom and later, in the staff room. In fact, your little stunt with the students had made most of the other teachers realize that they needed to step up their game, too! We had a friendly little competition going after you joined us permanently!

And this was not an isolated incident. Over the years, you have inspired and connected with multiple generations of students and classrooms. So many children have fallen in love with the English language because you taught them to love it.

Just look around the room and you will know that I’m telling the truth—although the crowd could also be because this is probably the last time many of us will get to gobble down your famous baking concoctions!  

Truly, we will miss your cookies almost as much as we will miss you!

You have spent almost your whole shaping the lives of people who would later go on to shape the world. You have given your one hundred percent to the classroom—now it’s time you give your one hundred percent to yourself!

During one of our many, many heartfelt conversations, you told me that when you finally retired, you would love to travel the world with your husband and to get to spend more time with your grandchildren.

 Well, now you can!

And we can’t wait for our Facebook Feed to be spammed by all the pictures you’re certainly going to upload!

Now, we’d love you to have this little token of appreciation for all the work you’ve done for our school.

5 Ways To Make A Retirement Speech (More) Special 

Now that you know all the stuff you need to include in a retirement speech and have an example of how to phrase it in hand, let’s move onto the next step: how to add that touch of uniqueness to your speech and make it truly memorable. 

1. Prepare A Skit

Adding a skit is an excellent way of making a retirement speech memorable. The theme for the skit can be anything. However, make sure it’s relevant to the retiring person’s life. A good idea is to structure the skit around some memorable incident from the person’s time at the workplace. 

It can be a funny incident, or an emotional one, or even an instance when they inspired you! 

If you’re not sure about which incident to pick, try asking someone who’s close friends with the person. The skit doesn’t need to be over-the-top or elaborate. You don’t need to get costumes or spend hours preparing it. Everyone has work to do and deadlines to meet. 

To save time, you can stick to a simple 3-5 minute skit with simple dialogues and few characters. You don’t need to dress up, either. 

It’s the thought that counts, after all. 

2. Make A Video! 

A video is another great way of making a retirement speech memorable. 

To do this, collect videos and photographs or any other material relevant to the departing employee and organize the contents into a small video that you can show either before or after your speech! Make sure the video isn’t too long, and that it has a positive note. 

3. Give Them A Personalized Souvenir 

While a token of appreciation is something they’re going to get from the company’s side, if a co-worker has truly touched your life, then giving them a personalized souvenir from the employee’s side is another great idea to make a retirement day unforgettable. 

The souvenir doesn’t have to be something expensive or over-the-top either. Rather, something handmade or something personalized might be a better idea. 

For example, you can give the employee a jar filled with little note cards that the other employees have written for them. 

4. Switch Up The Format 

Another way to make a retirement speech unique is by switching up the traditional speech format for something more fun! 

Instead, you could write and deliver the speech like a poem–or even a short story! If you want to make things even more interesting, you can turn it into a continuous story by involving a couple of more people with you! However, make sure to check in with the management before you do so, as time constraints or following a standard speech format might be an issue.

5. Coordinate Your Dressing

Is there a particular way your retiring co-worker always dressed? A color or pattern they favored? Or a shirt they couldn’t seem to get rid of? 

Well, now’s the time to use their personality quirks to your advantage!

Try remembering if there’s anything related to dressing sense that set your departing colleague apart, and coordinate with the rest of your colleagues to spruce up as they once did! 

Remember: it’s not necessary to look like carbon copies of your departing friend. You don’t need to stress if your T-shirt is the exact color or pattern as theirs. A close-copy works just as well.

How to give a great goodbye speech.

Farewell speeches mark significant departures: getting a promotion which means leaving a long held job and a group of respected colleagues, graduating from a course of study, leaving the workforce to retire... 

To be meaningful they need to be more than a casual "see you later" and a mumbled "thanks for everything" as you dash for the door.  Or the opposite, a rambling collection of anecdotes that bore listeners silly.

In contrast, a planned farewell speech crystallizes the moment of leaving, giving it focus, form, and dignity. It provides an opportunity to publicly acknowledge people and events, as well as to graciously show your appreciation and gratitude for them.

Occasions for giving a farewell speech

Leaving a workplace.

A farewell speech is frequently expected when leaving a job to take another, particularly if people have got together at a farewell party to mark the occasion.

It is either given by the person leaving or, to the person leaving by a close colleague, often their manager or boss.

Other occasions for farewell speeches

Other occasions calling for a farewell address are graduations (leaving a school, a class...), retirements, (leaving the full time workforce), or perhaps when a long-time member of your club or neighborhood departs.

A funeral speech or eulogy is yet another form of a goodbye or farewell speech.

'Winging it' v being prepared in the workplace

If there's a possibility you may be called on for a farewell speech in your workplace think it through carefully. 

There is a fine line between formal and informal, prepared and unprepared (winging it) in front of a crowd. Publicly straying too far on the spontaneous and casual side of it may have a knock-on impact you have little control over.

Like for instance, being overlooked rather than being offered the opportunity to speak on behalf of your fellow colleagues and your company again. 

Consider. Plan. You will know if you're expected to give a farewell speech. 

Learn from either your own previous experience or what you've witnessed. Be it the good, the bad or the ugly!

Good communication skills, (which includes public speaking), will open more hearts, minds, and therefore doors, than any other skill you might have!

Hallmarks of gracious farewell speeches

So having established the need to do more than bumble through, here's what you are aiming for. 

These are the characteristics of a speech an audience: your co-workers, employers, a dear colleague, classmates, a good friend, fellow club members, family members...anybody, would be delighted to hear.

• It is respectful and sincere. The speech expresses appropriate honest and genuine feelings about people, events and ideas.
• It is positive. The speech acknowledges outcomes, projects and events positively, without undue exaggeration or puffery. It concludes wishing hope and good luck for what the future holds. (If being positive is difficult be very careful about publicly passing judgement or making comments that could cause embarrassment or something far worse.)  
• It is brief. The speech is succinct and concise, minus padding or waffle. There are no prizes for rambling on and on. Three to five minutes is enough!

Content ideas for a leaver's going away speech

If it's you who is leaving and you're preparing a speech to mark the occasion, here is a list of the type of material expected, and appreciated, in a farewell speech.

• A brief summary of involvement eg. how long you've been with the company, club...
• What you have enjoyed, admired or appreciated about the work environment, job, neighborhood, club...
• The admiration and appreciation you have for the people: their qualities or their professional skills
• What you feel about leaving
• Your gratitude and thanks for support, opportunities to learn, friendship...
• Special memories: good humored anecdotes or a particularly memorable moment 
• Your reasons for leaving eg. shifting to a new city
• What, or where, you are going to
• Hopes and best wishes for those remaining

Obviously you're not expected to cover all nine points in lavish detail. Pick what feels right to you. Apply the guidelines and, prepare your speech.

A sample farewell speech to colleagues

To show you how the content suggestions and "graciousness" guidelines work together I've written a sample speech. That's below. 

The speech is 496 words long. Depending how fast or slow you speak, that will take approximately three and half minutes to deliver. (You can find out more speech rate here) 

About this speech

The speech is entirely fictional. I've written it from the point of view of a person working for a company called Smith and Black.

Here he/she, (I've not defined gender.), led a team which was involved in community initiatives. He/she is leaving to do further study.

The speech will be given at a gathering in the company staff room. 

Example of a leaver's farewell speech to colleagues

"Good morning. Thank you for coming along. I am delighted to see you all here.

Do you realize we've been sharing each other's company for 2920 days? 

That's eight years of fun times, challenging times and everything in between.

And today I am officially leaving you!

In the past some of you have questioned my sanity. Now, standing here in the midst of you good people, I'm wondering about it too!

It's bittersweet to leave a workplace you've enjoyed. I might joke about the Monday morning blues, but that's all it is – a joke.

I realize I have been very fortunate. This place, this work, and its people have meant so much to me. I am proud to have been a member of the team here.

Eight years ago you made it easy for me to feel at home. Smith and Black is a rare company. Its workplace is genuinely a mirror of its HR policy. Inclusion is more than a buzz word in a manual here. It's real! That makes it doubly difficult to leave.

Thank you for your belief in me, your support and your friendship. It's a pleasure and a privilege to have worked alongside colleagues who understand how to bring the best out in each other.

In the middle of our daily business: meeting targets, initiating projects and developing new ones, it's all too easy to lose sight of the most important element of all in any organization: the person, the people. Us. You and me, as individuals with hearts, minds, and feelings.

The “Red Balloon” initiative had lofty goals which we slaved to bring to fruition, and failed. The hard lessons learned there we deployed in our biggest success of all: the “No Child Left Behind” program. That was magical, inspirational work which will go on making the world a better place.

With so much to be grateful for: outstanding colleagues, an ethical humane company, and meaningful work, it seems perverse to leave.

As some of you already know, I'm going to take up an offer to further my understanding of the practical implementation of diversity policy. It's an amazing course, taught by some of my heroes in the field.

This is something I've wanted for several years and the right time to do it is now.

I am going to miss you all. You've been part of my journey for a long time.

I've already packed fond memories of fun, collaboration, consultation, and friendship into my heart to take with me. Those I'm deeply grateful for.

If you're expected to give a speech on behalf of your club, company... to a person leaving use the content suggestions below. 

• What you have sincerely enjoyed, admired or appreciated about the leaver's contribution to the workplace, club, neighborhood... eg. their role in XXX project, their organizational skills, the creative new ideas they brought to the role, the chocolate cake they made for special occasions...
• A story or two, a special moment to illustrate the type of person they are: their positive qualities and personality traits eg. a wonderful team player
• How their departure will impact on those left behind eg. a great loss
• Good wishes for the future
• Presentation of gift on behalf of company, if there is one to give.

Writing and delivering your speech

The easiest way to take your content ideas and turn them into a speech is to use an outline. Click the link for a free printable fill-in-the-blanks speech outline . The speech outline covers the main points you want to make in the order you want to make them. Once you've filled it out, test by saying it out loud.

• Listen for the flow of information. Is it ordered? Does each idea link logically? Are the transitions clear?
• Is there a beginning (introduction), body (middle) and conclusion?
• Is the content, tone and language use right for the occasion and your intended audience?
• Time the speech. Is it too long? Edit if necessary.
• And say your speech to a trusted friend or colleague at least a few days before the event.  This is a safety precaution to ensure you haven't left out anything that should be in, or put in anything that shouldn't be there. If there are alterations to make, you have enough time to get them done, and practiced.

3 ways to deliver your prepared farewell speech

Choose what best suits you and the occasion.

1. Read your speech

If the situation is very emotional or  you  are very emotional this may be the safest way to get everything you want to say out.

Using your completed speech outline as a guide, write the whole speech out. Word for word.

When you print your text out be sure to use a large font so that it is easily read. Double space your lines and number your pages for the same reason.

Reading aloud well needs practice. Without it you may find yourself with an audience full of people working very hard to be tolerant!

2. Use cue cards

The personality I have today is shaped by your blissful company. Your company dyed my blank canvas with vibrant colours, gave my school days meaning, and even stood by my side when I was having a rough time with teachers. 

I know we are not 21 and we are not allowed to raise a toast, but do you what else we can do? We can all thank ourselves in chorus and say, ‘This one is to the batch of 2023. Salud!’ 

I am having a little pain in my left shoulder. Is it because of this emotional moment or am I gonna have a heart attack? Whatever it is, I am sure we will survive cause that’s what we’ve done here. 

I would like to conclude by saying that this farewell is just the beginning of something new, a new life waiting for us. And who knows we can all meet together and maybe next time we can have a drink or go on a road trip. 

So let us take a moment to thank each other for all the joyful moments we shared. This whole world can be a happy place we everyone has friends like me. Even if we are apart, we are just one call away. We will surely be in touch after school days and will never let any of us down.

His valuable contributions to this college is not hidden to all of us. He is like an open book to us, having nice habits and character. He has given the college routine a shape and going now by leaving us all. He is the person who has followed all the etiquette in his life and taught us too. He and his works are unforgettable to us for whole life. He is my nice colleague, we have spent many great years together in this college however now we are getting separated.

He joined this college 10 years ago however, it never known to us that how this big time has passed with him happily. He was like a pillar in this college who always helped us and college authority with his strategic suggestions. We should say him a rock who has made able various students to get higher level success. He was like the maker of future to the students. He will be missed by us and students forever. Of-course he has been a part of the lifeblood of this college.

Nobody can take place after him in this college, his place would be empty without him. We should promise in front of him today to lead this college as his successor and try to manage all the functions of college according to his extraordinary high standards. We can never forget his nice meeting in the sports-ground after the college time. We were generally used to play badminton in the spare time daily after the college time. It is my gratefulness to admire him about his activeness and good energy level in the ground in such an old age. Although, today we are saying him goodbye as we cannot hold the time, it goes on its own and we have to follow it only. I would like to wish him all the very best for the rest of life.

Good evening to everyone. We are here in the farewell party of my dearest colleagues who is leaving the office and all of us too. As we all know that Mr. …, who is working in the Sales Department in our office. He is our one of the best colleague. He has been an outstanding employee of the office from the date he joined the office. It is very sad to say that he is going today to join another office and we are giving him farewell party today. It is his fortune that he got new opportunity to move out of the city and join a big company however it is our misfortune that we are missing a nice colleague forever. Being the head of sales department and first of all his colleague, I would like to say here something about him.

I still remember that he joined the office as junior of mine in the sales department however his hard work and commitment towards his duty made him possible to get senior post very soon in just few months after the joining. At the time of his joining, the HR department was in little hesitation to hire him because of the lack of proper experience, however he made everyone happy due to his high level potential. He never given us an opportunity to say something bad or wrong about him. His all the contributions to the office is very clear to everyone which we can never ignore. He has greatly contributed to the sales department by improving the function of sales department.

He has made the functioning more organized and less challenging by implementing more strategic plans which we generally thought impossible to implement. His all the hard works helped us and company to move ahead in the more competitive market. Mr. …, we really will miss you very much especially for the reason when you entered a room and made us laugh daily. We can never forget your heartily dedication to your job and positive changes you made in the company. It is very difficult for us to give farewell to you and replace you with another colleague, however what we can do, we will have to follow the company norms as usual. Good evening to everyone gathered here in the farewell party of mine. I would like to say a big thank to all of you for giving me a wonderful farewell party today. My dear colleagues, as we all know that nothing is touching to heart than to learn someone. I was so much valued by all of you here in my full term of office. I am leaving today this office and most importantly my all nice colleagues which is very painful. I can not express my sorrow of leaving to all of you. You have made me so special and given me a place in your heart, really I can never forget.

I still remember all the jokes which we made together in the office and way to home. My dear colleagues, this is the place where I become so much experienced and able to move another place to go ahead in the life. I think that I do not made any contribution to this office however itself it has contributed a lot in my life by making me the person I am today. The whole duration I have worked here had given me something, it learned everything what I needed and gave me more than I required. It was really a wonderful job for me which has prepared me enough for my future.

I would like to say thank you all to give me respect, love and care for whole duration I have spent here in this office. I also would like to say thank to this organization to offer me nice job, post and most importantly the needed space to grow and allowing me to take my own decisions in the projects. I have learned here a lot from my own mistakes and developed a strong faith in myself. All the guidance I get here would be with me in my life. Joining and leaving are the regular phenomenon of everyone’s life which we must have to follow to go ahead for the betterment of the individual, society and country. A collection of politicians, community activists, family, friends and co-workers filled a majestic University of Chicago chapel Sunday to say goodbye to the late Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough and remember her trailblazing spirit.

Hundreds gathered inside Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the university’s Hyde Park campus to bid farewell to Yarbrough, a fixture in state and local Democratic Party politics who died April 7 with more than two years left in her second term in office.

Yarbrough, 73, had been hospitalized at the time , battling an undisclosed medical condition.

Amid stories about her compassion and determination, Yarbrough was eulogized Sunday at a public funeral replete with the tributes bestowed upon an elected public official who championed causes that helped veterans, homeowners, public health and social justice.

She was elected in 2018 as the county’s first African American and female clerk. Voters reelected her in 2022. Though the tributes largely focused on Yarbrough as an innovator in Illinois politics who helped open the door for other women, her personal life as a wife, mother and grandmother also were honored.

Yarbrough is survived by her husband, Henderson, and the couple’s blended family of six children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In a stirring eulogy, former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun said Illinois has lost a visionary and a “beacon of light.” Braun said she was in North Africa when she learned of her beloved friend’s passing and moved “heaven and earth “ to make it in time for Sunday’s funeral. She said the two met more than two decades ago when Yarbrough became a state lawmaker.

“You’d have to be blind not to recognize the transcendent intelligence and curiosity about life that she had,” Braun said. She remembered how the two would commiserate how Black women in politics were often “kicked around for the kinds of things that seem to escape notice” when done by their white male colleagues.

“No offense, white men in the audience,” Braun said, drawing laughter from mourners in the nearly 100-year-old medieval-style cathedral. “But she survived all that and came out even stronger.”

Among those who attended were Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, U.S. Sens. Richard Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other dignitaries.

Pritzker called Yarbrough “a trailblazer” and “a great public servant.”

“Hers was a storied career in which she tirelessly championed bold causes and toiled behind the scenes to get things done,” Pritzker said. “Compassionate, determined, undaunted. She knew that the most important things … had critics and enemies that would tear you down along the road to success.”

Born Aug. 22, 1950, in Washington, D.C., Yarbrough came to Maywood with her family in the early 1960s. She received her bachelor’s degree in business management at Chicago State University and a master’s in inner-city studies from Northeastern Illinois University. She also studied advanced leadership studies at Harvard-Kennedy School of Government.

Yarbrough first ran for the Illinois House in 1998 against incumbent Rep. Eugene Moore but lost in a four-way primary. In 2000, after Moore left to become recorder of deeds, Yarbrough soon won the legislative seat. After serving as a state lawmaker for more than a decade, ascending to assistant House majority leader, Yarbrough left the legislature when she succeeded Moore as recorder in 2012 upon his retirement.

Her most high-profile accomplishments in Springfield included securing money for local projects and successfully working on legislation to ban indoor smoking in Illinois in 2008.

At Sunday’s funeral, Durbin called Yarbrough a “whirlwind of energy” who was quick to step in to help others, including himself. Durbin recalled how his father had died of lung cancer from smoking at age 53, when Durbin was just a teen, later motivating a public health campaign.

“Illinois was a tough, tough state when it came to tobacco,” Durbin said. “It took a courageous person to step up and say, ‘I’ll take this issue on.’ Somebody who really cared. That courageous person was Karen Yarbrough.”

Yarbrough garnered her biggest accolades for her House sponsorship of the hard-fought ban on executions in Illinois in January 2011.

After leaving Springfield, Yarbrough served as the county recorder for six years until her 2018 election as Cook County clerk, a position she held until her death last week. Her office is mainly responsible for administering suburban elections and maintaining property and legislative records. Her death has led to delays in issuing some vital records , including death certificates.

In the interim, Chief Deputy Clerk Cedric Giles has been running the office.

The Cook County Democratic Party will choose a successor to fill the vacancy through the end of the year and a nominee to run in the November election. The party may choose the same person, or two different people. Executive Director Jacob Kaplan said the party will announce an appointment process after Yarbrough’s memorial.

Most interested candidates are abstaining from publicly campaigning until after the service, though state Rep. Marcus Evans, recent state’s attorney candidate Clayton Harris, county Commissioner Stanley Moore and Water Reclamation District Commissioner Kari Steele are reportedly interested.

The party’s next meeting is scheduled for April 22, when new Democratic committee people that were elected in the March primary will be sworn in. Under recently amended county code, each committeeperson “shall be entitled to one vote” when filling the vacancy through December. A candidate is required to receive a simple majority — in this case, 41 — of the total number of votes in order to be appointed.

The single vote changes the typical calculus for any hopefuls: Appointment votes have typically been weighted based on Democratic turnout in each ward or township, meaning candidates could focus on lobbying committeepersons with high shares of the weighted vote to succeed.

Kaplan said recently it is unclear whether that weighted vote will be used to determine who the party puts on the November ballot.

The Cook County GOP’s own nomination for the November ballot will be discussed at the party’s county convention on April 17.

Amid the hymns, prayer and tributes that punctuated Sunday’s funeral service, officiated by Pastor Darius Brooks of Grace Central Church in suburban Westchester, several public proclamations and resolutions also were read.

One came from U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ office. Harris wrote that Yarbrough broke gender and race barriers and embodied the words of her own mother who told Harris, “You must be the first to do many things, but make sure you’re not the last.”

Others who spoke, including Duckworth and Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, also described her as a pioneer who mentored other women in politics.

“Throughout all the years that I knew her, one of the things I most admired is that I never once saw in her a woman of fear,” Duckworth said. “If she thought she was right, even if she was the only person in the room to hold her opinion, she would plant her flag and refuse to budge.”

Stratton agreed, describing “the weight of being the first or an only” in life.

“It’s not a glamorous fate, rather one that settles on your shoulders, constantly reminding you that one wrong step could land you on your face, crushed under the heaviness of watchful eyes,” Stratton said. “But Karen was never one to be crushed. She used that weight to strengthen and prepare herself for the trials ahead.”
