There are many reasons why one would prefer to work in a country other than the one he/ she was born. Such practice benefits both the countries and goes a long way to open up numerous opportunities as will be outlined latter in this essay. Outsourcing labor from outside the US, for example, has brought in new skills at a slightly lower cost making the cost of production go down while at the same time increasing quality of goods. Personally I would feel much privileged to work in a foreign country for a number of reasons.

Reasons why foreign employment is much better

Working in a foreign country is adventurous and presents an opportunity to learn new things .Different countries, for example, are endowed with different physical features making it n opportunity to see new sceneries. Countries adopt different procedures of doing things and this would be yet another opportunity to learn new skills. Working in a foreign country would also help me get exposed to different people and may be an opportunity for opening new trade links. In addition it gives an opportunity to learn new culture as well as different languages. Working abroad also presents an opportunity to invest in a foreign country therefore increasing once wealth base. Another reason why I would prefer to work abroad is the fact that most jobs in a foreign country would be better paying.

Tips to help adapt

The most important tips that would enable a person to survive in a foreign nation is discipline and self drive. Disciplined people attract favor and this would go a long way in enhancing cooperation others include hard work willingness to learn new skills, Willingness to keep increasing once knowledge base as well as a drive to learn a local language. Another important tip would to make a few more friends that would be available in time of need.

People who works in foreign country has to face various problems. mostly youths go to foreign from our country nepal. some of the disadvantages of foreign employment are:.

  • Long family distance : People who go to foreign miss their family members. They have to stay away from their loved ones. The husband has to stay away from his wife. A father has to stay without looking the face of his children. A son has to stay away from his mother and father .
  • Country Lacks Manpower : All the youths of Nepal are flying to abroad. The old ones, women and children are left in the country. The country remains in the lack of educated and trained manpower. This is the reason why our country is still undeveloped.

Solution of foreign employment in Nepal

Foreign employment is good but at the same time, it is affecting very negatively to our country. The manpower of our country are going to abroad due to which the country is getting back day by day. The government should take strict action to solve this problem. People should get employment on our own country . Government should create opportunities of employment in the country.

The education system should be modified. Traditional education system is still prevalent in Nepal which is not so useful . Such education is good just for degrees not for living . Education which can make a person independent such type of education should be given then only our country will move on the path of development.

Moving is not cheap, especially when you move abroad! You may have to renew your passport or pay for a visa, which also includes transportation to and from the consulate. If you do not downsize, you need to pay for long-term storage. And you still have to buy flights and temporary housing accommodations until you find something permanent.

To curb some of these costs, minimize your spending once you decide to work abroad. Save as much as you can to prepare. Some future expats even take up extra jobs, but that depends on your responsibilities and money needs. It balances out and possibly decreases in the end, though that can take time.

Language-learning is difficult

Learning a new language is enticing and impressive. However, it is also frustrating and difficult. Many people intentionally move abroad to a country where they do not speak the language to force themselves to learn it. Others make it easier and pick a destination where they know the language. There is no right or wrong way, just your preference.

Feelings of loneliness and instability

Homesickness abroad is a real thing and one of the disadvantages of working abroad. I’ve been there – it’s not fun. It is linked to the adjustment phase and overcoming culture shock.  In the beginning, when you are building that community, it can be lonely. And living in multiple Airbnbs can cause some instability as another negative side of working abroad.  

Once the excitement of going abroad diminishes, loneliness can creep inside you. And with loneliness comes fear and a hint of overwhelming sadness for the life you left behind. However, it does not last forever! You eventually adjust, find people (and housing), and become more flexible working abroad.

Dealing with culture shock

People who work abroad may hate to admit it, but culture shock happens to the best of us. Even when you feel adjusted, culture shock can appear. Examples of culture shock vary too. Some examples include adapting to new work hours or learning a different concept of work-life balance. Not understanding what goes on if you do not know the language can feel isolating. It can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Yet, it doesn’t stick around for long.

International fellowships are unique opportunities to work abroad. Unlike regular, full-time positions, these are fixed-term opportunities. Most fellowship grantees are on a contract that includes some benefits, such as relocation, above-average stipend housing, and more. Fellowships abroad can last at least one year, but they could be longer depending on the opportunity.

International fellowship programs are worth the application process if you are transitioning between college and the 9 to 5 life. Since you are on a specific contract, it has a definite beginning, middle, and end with no pressure to re-apply. However, it does require you to come up with a plan post-fellowship.  If you want to stay in that country after the fellowship is over, begin seeking opportunities midway through.

Ahhh, the coveted visa sponsorships. These are opportunities for foreigners to work abroad with an employer legally. Lucky for you, Google is your best friend. First, input “visas sponsorships list” with the respective country’s name to find which employers can help you. Then, scroll through each sponsor to choose which ones align with the work you do.

Scale up your side hustle

If you are not finding an established opportunity to do what you want, make it yourself. Sometimes your “formal” or ‘traditional” career experiences are not the most fruitful. Getting a job abroad can take a little creativity, and a side hustle can be that outlet. You can attain so many transferable skills in a side hustle that your regular job may not provide. Plus, there is an admirable level of drive and discipline when a person creates a side hustle. 

Become a freelancer

Based on your skillset and working personality, you can also work as a freelancer. Resources such as Upwork and Fiverr are two of the most popular websites to find freelance work. Some international companies host job fairs or webinars to connect with future employees. Using LinkedIn you can connect with employers to find out if these job fairs exist. Get a Master’s degree abroad

Becoming a student can lead to a long-term stay abroad if you plan it right. Pursuing a Master’s or even a Bachelor’s degree is an easier way to find a job abroad. Going to school can then lead to working abroad. Many countries have 1-2 year visas for postgraduate students to find a job.

Seek out government employment

Government jobs are another way to work abroad. Depending on your nationality and citizenship, you can work for an embassy abroad or another public service sector. Some teaching English abroad programs are even sponsored by government agencies. Those could be great pathways to a more government job. 

Some websites to use are Impact Pool , UN Volunteers , and for U.S. citizens USA Jobs . You can also check the country you want to work in for international positions. Those jobs are on their respective websites.

Try an internship abroad

If you like the idea of fellowships abroad but want a shorter length of time, consider internships instead. Internships abroad are similar to fellowships. However, they have a higher probability of being unpaid and do not include health insurance. Each internship is different and varies upon your career path/sector. 

Internships abroad are great for students or early-career professionals who want to get some work experience. For students, who normally have a summer off, check with your school for scholarships. But, again, the biggest downside is that many are unpaid (though that is changing). So if money is an obstacle for you, pursue a longer fellowship with more benefits.

Find a remote job

Remote work is becoming more and more popular! With websites like FlexJobs and entrepreneurs such as Andrea of It’s a Travel OD , you can find remote work opportunities just about anywhere. Remote work is a nice way to work abroad because you can also be location-independent. Co-working spaces are popping up everywhere too. So if you want to be a digital nomad, this pathway is ideal for you.

And if you think some of those cons of working abroad will not arise, think twice. Just because you are virtual does not mean cultural differences do not affect you. Or that culture shock will not impact your transition. Remote work still requires a bit of an adjustment working from a laptop all day. Get blue light glasses, a comfy chair, a desk, and lots of natural light to enhance productivity.

Check out seasonal work

Did you know seasonal work visas exist too? These are temporary work opportunities for people to work in agriculture, hospitality, and tourism. Even without the visa, many people work in hostels (especially if you can speak multiple languages) or become tour guides. Opportunities vary based on the country and their needs!

This list outlined a few of the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad. But there is still so much research to do! In the end, you have to weigh the pros and cons of working abroad to understand if it is the right decision for you. Some people decide to make a pros and cons list to make their final choice. 

However, I will say that ambition, patience, flexibility, and adaptability are a few of the soft skills you will need to work abroad. There are benefits and challenges of working overseas where you will need these skills. And while hard skills to land a government or remote job are necessary, I would argue soft skills are more important. Those are the ones you need regardless.

Working abroad is not for the easily frazzled. To do it, you need a lot of self-determination not to give up when it gets tough. If this list excites you, then consider working abroad in the future. If you are still hesitant, keep digging. The spark to go for it is there, so do not hold yourself back! The fact you read this far shows you are for a big change. Do not let fear, or the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad, get the best of you. It may be the best thing you ever do.

Title: Mercenaries, domestics and prostitutes, three figures of the wage system in Nepalese international migrations: Beyond the institutional fictions of the State: the reality of employee trafficking. Abstract As a result of preliminary research into the growth of social, domestic and gender inequalities in certain non-Hindi minority populations of Nepal, who began to emigrate massively from the rural areas in the 1980s, I was led to study the conditions of their integration in Arab or Christian countries where these Buddhist populations migrated, through multi-site and transnational surveys in their destination countries (especially in Europe - France, Portugal, Belgium, and in the United States ). How could we sociologically account for the shared representation of the profits or losses in the new statuses claimed and sometimes acquired? How could the new provisions of these aspiring migrants who had managed to create new conditions of life outside their country, in turn influence and change new forms of exploitation or "self-exploitation" of workers, believing they were accessing a new form of subjectivity and freedom by leaving behind the rural world and domestic constraints? It emerged from these investigations that there were in fact, important fractions of salaried or fixed-term contract migrant workers calling for a reconsideration of a number of questions asked on the idea of salaried job search, or even of 'work' by the Nepalese workers who were candidates for export. This required revisiting the study of the historical and political nature of constrained labour policy and its relationship with the State.

India and Nepal share approximately 1751 Km long open international border, which nourishes the needs of people on either side, particularly the economic and social needs. A large number of people cross this border daily, especially that from Nepalese side into India, for purchasing daily usage commodities, education, health and employment purposes. Besides, Indians also step into Nepal for livelihood and social purposes. Therefore the border is serving as a socio- economic bond between the two societies, which is a unique example in the continent. While moving across this border, people have no security, social or any other fear; and so the people from both sides are mutually engaged in economic activities and also ably maintaining social relations. Nepalese agro-labours are mostly serving in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim states in India. Besides, they are also working in many other states, even in the southern states. On the other hand, Indian labours are available throughout Nepal. Thus, it is observed that besides the commuters, there is a fair size of workers who are a sort of seasonal migrants. In case of Sikkim state alone, the number of Nepalese agro-labours who are seasonal migrants is approximately 70,000. Sometimes, this labour comes through contractors, provided they are demanded by a single employer in bulk; however a notable number of labours cross this border individually to work in cross border territory. So is in the case with Indian labours in Nepal. The workers, who are employed in industries or in masonry related works or even for some organized business related labours, are procured through contractors; whereas petty businessmen, grocers, cross this border without any check. Considering the exact direct gains out of this mutual cross border movement, it can be spelled that it’s of great use to both economies and societies as abundant availability of cheaper labour is ensured, almost locally. Availability of employment opportunities to labours is itself a big gain as at least they are ably earning their livelihood and raising their families, irrespective of their level of skill. Besides, the economic development of the border area and nearby towns / cities is also credited to this cross border swapping people. The socio- cultural landscape is transforming due to human resource mobility. There are hardly a very few people, who just come only to purchase something across the border but majority constitutes of those who purposely cross the border and get entertained by the market and other facilities, available on the way. So far as the strains are concerned, they are mainly related to violation of human rights, financial exploitation, counterfeits, inhumane behaviour and also misappropriate laws. It is well understood that only the labours are not the human resource under this discourse, but they comprise of majority who contribute to a larger group of beneficiaries through this border, and also are the people who are sufferers not gainers. Currency exchange and related laws of Govt. of India are best example to initiate the exploitation of Nepalese labours who return their homes after serving a year of more. Banning of big Indian currency notes such as of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 in Nepal have greater implications to those labours who return to Nepal. Possibility of exploitation in the name of employment in India is not denied as many such cases have come into limelight. There are some INGOs/ NGOs in Nepal as well as in India which have been engaged to ensure ‘Safe Migration’. Recently a few such girls, belonging to NER, were rescued from Mumbai and Delhi. Similar stories are about Nepalese girls and women have been witnessed here in India. National security is another pressing issue to be addressed. The border is open and the entry is not as filtered as it should be along an international border to keep a check on illegal entries or to prohibit unwanted elements. Growing mafias in the areas along this border is a great threat to both countries. There is a need to address the issue of human resource mobility between India and Nepal in order to ensure safe migration, no exploitation, and no humiliation thereby ensuring their human rights. There may be a regional forum to address labour mobility issues in order to optimize their contribution along with abolishing side effects to host the economy and national security in South Asia. This type of efforts can be initiated even at SAARC level.

This paper reflects the situation of foreign labour migration of Nepalese People. Globally, foreign labour migration is in increasing trends. In Nepalese context also foreign labour migration is being more important for employment mainly among unemployed people and youths who entered in labour force market. The number of foreign labour migrants and share of remittance in terms of GDP has increased. This article is based on secondary sources of information. The annual reports of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) point out that complaints related to the education sector for financial misuses occupy the largest share consistently in the past few years. International Employment Issues Your Company Needs to Be Aware Of

For years employees have been clamouring for more opportunities to work from home; to work overseas; to live a more flexible and balanced life. Now, Covid-19 has proved the ultimate stress test for remote working. And remote working has passed the test . We can create, communicate and collaborate from anywhere, it turns out. 

However, when it comes to being legally employed to do so, things become a lot trickier. While it may often feel like we are one globalised world, we are still a highly localised world as far as international employment goes. Regulations and laws are fragmented, even in seemingly united unions (such as the US States, Canadian provinces, or EU member countries, to name but a few). This creates many international employment issues for companies to deal with.  

I started Boundless after I had experienced considerable challenges in managing employment for geographically distributed teams at a previous company I was the COO for. I still remember all the things that kept me up at night initially. Employing them the right way turned out to be far more complicated than I had ever imagined. If you find yourself in a similar position now, I know exactly how you feel. 

Fast forward to more than three years after that experience, and I have learned a great deal about the most pressing international employment issues and how they can be solved. Let's dive right in.

Are you based in the US and expanding in Europe? Forget about employment-at-will. There are stringent termination procedures, which sometimes, as is the case with The Netherlands, may require you to get the consent of a court.

So why does international employment come with so many issues?

Because the moment you cross a state line or a country border, (mostly) everything around employment changes, and you have to forget a lot of what you know. I will give you two examples.

Are you based in the US and expanding in Europe? Forget about employment-at-will. There are stringent termination procedures, which sometimes, as is the case with The Netherlands, may require you to get the consent of a court. 

Or are you based in Canada and hiring into France, Germany, or Spain? If you want to put a restrictive covenant, be prepared to pay the former employee 30 to 50% of their salary for the duration of the covenant. 

This is just the tip of the iceberg of international employment issues… 

If you are hiring internationally, you will have to consider international payroll. However, before you do that, you will need to look into a host of country-specific items starting with the need (or not) for corporate presence and the process for registering as an employer. You will then need to decide whether to run payroll in-house or outsource it (you should outsource at least until employee 250, here is why).

Next, you have to consider another particularity of international payroll: local net salaries. The same gross salary will equal a different net wage in other countries. Part of that is because of foreign currencies; however, it mainly has to do with local employee and employer taxes, allowances, contributions, and tax credits variations. If an employee is relocating, you will have to address this. 

This is particularly important for employees who are relocating. I would recommend doing your homework and making the gross to net (capping the company cost at its current level) and net to gross (keeping the employee at the same level of take-home pay) calculations. If you are a company that practices the philosophy of equal pay for equal work , you will need to put some thought into harmonisation. 

Another important aspect of international payroll is that remuneration comes with different requirements in different jurisdictions. Primarily this covers minimum wage and pay frequency. Still, there are some more specific cases, such as the cap on bonuses for people in financial services that is in place in The Netherlands (can't be more than 20% of fixed salary). As you can see the topic of payroll should be on the top of your agenda as you try to resolve international employment issues.

You must ensure compliance with the local tax regulations for every state or country where you have employees, registering for (and paying) employer taxes. Those vary significantly (the global average is 15.3%).

You must then register each employee with the relevant tax and social security authorities to deduct all contributions. 

The percentage of taxes you will have to deduct from employees varies significantly. For example, on a salary of €79,470, a single employee with no dependents or special tax regime may be charged as low as 9.9% in Singapore (conditions apply) and 12.9% in Bulgaria or as high as 46.6% in Portugal and 46.2% in South Korea.

On top of the income and social security taxes, many countries have additional taxes that may surprise you. Brazil , for example, has over 60 different taxes, and every federate unit within the country can enact more tax rules. Moreover, many tax rules are unclear and are subject to widely different interpretations by tax and social security authorities. Navigating all that tax complexity will be a big challenge for you.

Other examples of taxes include Germany , where practising Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish employees may pay what is known as a church tax; Portugal , where employees who earn above €80,882 pay a progressive solidarity tax; Italy , where residents pay regional and town taxes. 

You will have to subtract these taxes from employee payroll and file them with the relevant authority or organisation. If you don't, as their employer, you may be charged with tax evasion or fraud. 

In France, aside from written employment law, employment rights and obligations are provided by case law, collective bargaining agreements, collective company agreements, company's internal regulations, and unilateral decisions of the employer or customary practices.

Employment rights and obligations

Each jurisdiction has specific employment laws that stipulate precisely what the rules are to employ someone there. Those cover both employer obligations and employee rights and extend to all corners of employment: employment conditions, protections, work hours, probation and notice periods, redundancy, employment terminations, and many others. 

However, other governing bodies also specify employer obligations and employee rights in many countries, aside from employment laws. In France, for example, aside from written law, employment rights and obligations are provided by case law, collective bargaining agreements, collective company agreements, company's internal regulations (mandatory for companies that employ 20+ employees), and unilateral decisions of the employer or customary practices. 

Furthermore, some countries' laws stipulate the need to create a Works Council, which governs certain aspects of employment. The Works Councils will often need to be informed or consulted on several employment issues, especially disciplinary ones. Failing to do that may result in companies paying fines and penalties as high as €187,515 in Spain.

Most countries will have provisions about data protection, whistleblower protection, protection from discrimination, a right to a healthy and safe work environment, a written payslip or the ability to join a union, etc. In addition, several countries will give employees the right to request flexible work (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and others). 

As stated in the opening of this article, most countries will have very watertight protections against dismissal and corresponding elaborate termination procedures that companies will need to follow. Failing to do that can see employees raise complaints with authorities, courts, and tribunals.

Most countries will have provisions against discrimination, but a number are taking that a step further, particularly regarding equal pay. This means that if a dispute arises with it (such as in the case of Uber ), courts will disregard the agreement and rule based on the law. 

It's also essential to understand that any employee or company changes will need to be added to the contract. This is particularly key when it comes to hybrid and work from home situations. For example, an employee moving to work permanently from their home in Portugal will warrant an additional agreement. Its validity, however, is limited to three years and would need to be renewed after. On the other hand, in Estonia , employers need only to create an amendment to the contract. 

What is important to understand here is that more than the obvious things (the work address) need changing. For example, in the case of a move to WFH, performance, and reporting expectations, working hours and other structural aspects of the job description may also need to be changed. If employers do not update the employment contract accordingly, authorities may deem it void, making the employee an illegal worker. 

While the contract outlines what an employee does, where they will be doing it from, the expectations, etc., it will always carry less weight than the employment rules in the country.

Benefits 

Local benefits can loosely be grouped into government-provided and government-mandated ones. Most countries will have a mandatory national insurance system, to which either the employer or the employee will contribute or, in some cases, both sides will. Once again, regulations vary significantly. For example, in the UK and Australia , employers must contribute to employee pension schemes. In Ireland , on the other hand, all employers with more than five employees must offer access to a pension scheme, but they are not required to make contributions. 

Paid time-off benefits — such as vacations, holidays, maternity/paternity leave, and medical leave — all exist as benefits in one form or another in OECD countries, with the notable exception of the US when it comes to paid maternity.

What further complicates this field are benefits in kind , which employers offer at their discretion. Generally, since benefits in kind have a monetary value, they are treated as taxable income. In most cases, it's the employee that pays that tax. However, in Australia and New Zealand , employers pay it. In Ireland , employees have to pay that tax but have an initial €500 tax-free allowance. 

Suppose you want to harmonise the benefits in kind you offer internationally. In that case, you will have to beware of countries such as Estonia , which has progressive benefits in kind tax that can be as high as 60%–70%, making them very unattractive to employees.

IELTS Essay on Employment

There are many IELTS writing topics but one of the common ones is employment . This means anything relating to the idea of working. (Of course, it could also be the opposite: unemployment .) In any case, today I will explain how to write an IELTS essay on employment.

We are going to look at two examples of IELTS writing task 2 questions about employment and then I will show you my two sample answers.

IELTS Writing Questions about Employment

The topic of employment could arise almost anywhere in the IELTS exam but it is quite common in task 2 of the writing test. In fact, the scope for what sort of question you could be asked is immense! You could be asked about employment and:

  • Environment
  • and much more

In short, you cannot really prepare for this by guessing the questions or having any expectation of a particular topic. Just know that you might have to write an essay about employment and that you will need to read it carefully.

IELTS Essay #1: Self-Employment vs Traditional Employment

First of all, let’s look at an IELTS writing question about self-employment.

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

This is a two-part question , which means you should aim to answer both questions in the body of your essay. In a sense, this makes it much easier to understand the question and structure your answer.

However, let’s make sure that we understand it perfectly.

Question analysis

Premise: In the modern era, many people work for themselves. This is different from the past, when they worked for companies.

We have to write about two things:

  • Why this has happened.
  • What are the disadvantages.

In a sense, this is a rare instance where the two-part question and the advantages-and-disadvantages question come together! You can see how #1 is sort of asking for the advantages, and #2 specifically asks for disadvantages.

I have often seen my writing correction students make the mistake of confusing freelancing, self-employment, and working from home. There can obviously be some overlap between these but there are also important distinctions:

To answer this question, I would take a pretty simple, four-paragraph structure for my approach. It would look like this:

Sample Band 9 Answer

It is quite common nowadays for people to be self-employed, rather than working for a company or organization. This essay will look into the reasons for that change, and then discuss some of the disadvantages of being self-employed.

In the information era, it is quite possible for people to work at home on their computer. The internet has opened up all sorts of possibilities in terms of making money, and so people may work as freelancers or start their own company. It has never been easier to do this because in the past working for yourself required renting an office or shop, whereas now you can simply set up a website or social media profile. People typically prefer this because it allows them a great deal of freedom. A person who prefers nights and loathes waking up early might choose to conduct their business at night, whereas someone who likes to travel might work from a laptop while visiting different places.

Of course, there are some disadvantages to being unemployed. This sort of employment lacks the security of a traditional job. In most countries, workers are protected by laws that guarantee them certain rights. However, with no employer and no workplace, these laws do not apply. Similarly, traditional jobs provide pension plans and health insurance, but when you work for yourself you have to provide these yourself, and they are not cheap. In fact, most self-employed people simply forego these things and take the risk as a part of their comparatively free life.

In conclusion, being self-employed allows people a far greater degree of freedom in their life, but there are several significant drawbacks that mean this sort of work is not suitable for everyone.

IELTS Essay #2: Job Satisfaction

Next, we will look at an IELTS essay on employment that deals specifically with the interesting issue of job satisfaction:

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing. What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

This is another two-part question. What a coincidence!

Question Analysis

In order to understand this question, we can again look closely at its premise:

Premise: Job satisfaction is important for a person’s wellbeing.

You have to write about:

  • The factors that make people satisfied with their work
  • Whether or not it is realistic for everyone to achieve job satisfaction

You should aim to write about all of this without straying off topic.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand or overlook the second question, which asks whether it is realistic for everyone to have job satisfaction . This can be a difficult thing to discuss with any depth, but you need to address it as best you can.

Here is how I will plan my IELTS essay about job satisfaction:

Although some people think that a high salary is the most important part of a job, the truth is that job satisfaction is probably more important. This essay will look at some of the factors contributing to this, and then argue that it is a reasonable expectation to have some degree of job satisfaction.

Every person is different and so defining job satisfaction is not an easy task. However, it could be stated that in order to provide this to employees, employers must give them a good justification for doing their job. The reason for this is that having a sense of satisfaction with one’s job largely comes from feeling a sense of purpose. People who feel that their efforts are useless or unappreciated invariably feel no job satisfaction. In addition to this, it is important that a person is given some degree of responsibility and autonomy with their tasks. Having a supervisor monitoring every single action presents a lack of trust and creates an atmosphere of oppression. When these two factors are met, they can result in workers who feel satisfied with their positions.

It may seem unlikely that people can achieve this because ever since the industrial revolution, it has been normal for people to work long hours in order to make money to survive, with little thought given to making workers happy or comfortable. However, in the modern world there is no good reason why this cannot be a new target. Employers should strive to give their employees dignity in the workplace, instead of maximizing productivity. Whether this is likely or not depends on social expectations and workplace laws, but it is certainly possible if the effort were made.

In conclusion, job satisfaction occurs when people are given tasks that matter and then offered some degree of responsibility. This could be given to everyone with the right motivation, although it is also possible that it may not happen.

Remember that there are many possible questions and so you should not assume that these two will appear in your next test. Also note that the topic of employment could appear in task 1 as a line graph of employment rates or any other sort of visual representation of employment and unemployment.

Issues in foreign employment.

Nepal has witnessed significant changes in several policy domains after the introduction of a federalist constitution in 2015. But foreign employment policies are examples of what have remained unchanged despite massive changes in the political system. The Department of Foreign Employment’s internal database suggests that about 3 million Nepalis are currently employed overseas with authentic documentation. Their contribution to Nepal's economic and social development is unparalleled in any other policy area in Nepal. Yet, the entire Nepali foreign employment management regulation remains a subject of controversy. 

Five ubiquitous elements of foreign employment management are intensifying the controversy in its policy and praxis. The first element refers to its conceptual domain. Nepal’s foreign employment legislation has failed to bring conceptual clarity in some of the perennial subjects. For example, there is no policy consensus on when Nepalis should be sent for foreign employment. Are we going to keep sending our people abroad for the foreseeable future?

Similarly, policymakers are unclear about the role of the government in sending Nepali youths to work overseas. When should the government take the lead, and when should it facilitate the private sector’s involvement in sending Nepali citizens for foreign jobs? Clarity is absent in defining skills too. On the one hand, the government requires its citizens to be technically sound to contribute to the advancement of our own country. On the other hand, Nepali policymakers keep expressing the desire to send skilled human resources for foreign employment. Who will build this nation if we encourage professional human resources for overseas employment? If we continue to prioritise sending unskilled people, how will their working conditions improve?

The second area of contestation is in the monitoring aspect of private sector agencies. The regulatory provisions in the Foreign Employment Act 2007 for the private sector seem to be relatively robust, requiring government agencies to be more vigilant about, among other things, how recruitment processes are carried out. The existing landscape of monitoring modalities and procedures of the Department of Foreign Employment does not appear to address the current need to work with private recruitment companies. This has resulted in an atmosphere of misunderstanding between the government and private sector agencies, which eventually hampers the government’s effort to regulate the foreign employment management sector in an acceptable manner.

The third is providing welfare services to foreign employees and their families back home. According to the prevailing legislation, the Foreign Employment Board–a responsible authority to deliver welfare services to foreign employees and their families–cannot provide welfare services to those who do not register before departing for foreign employment. However, the law clearly outlines the role of private sector agencies in providing welfare services to migrant workers and their families should they require any assistance due to breach of the employment contract or other unforeseen reasons. Problems arise when private sector agencies refuse to offer such support.

Fourth, contestations emerge over the roles and responsibilities of Nepal as a labour sending country and the governments of many labour receiving countries. It seems that almost all the bilateral labour agreements perfectly outline several principles, including fair recruitment, responsibilities of the governments, and duties of those involved in foreign employment management. In practice, however, many actors show reluctance to follow such arrangements. Joint technical committees discuss such practical gaps, yet their performance and efficacy are always questionable.

The fifth area of controversy relates to how the foreign employment regime in Nepal is working with like-minded national and international organisations. There are instances of such organisations at the national and international levels being engaged in offering information services, conducting capacity development related activities, facilitating grievance handling mechanisms, and sometimes helping victims reach the appropriate government entity. The question here is whether and under what conditions the government should allow endogenous and exogenous organisations to be involved in what foreign employment sector.

Possible solutions

Finding possible solutions to these problems requires three interrelated interventions. The first is reform that must be instigated at the political level. Such reforms should exclusively answer the question of "leadership" in sending Nepali youths for overseas employment: When, under what circumstances, and how should the government itself recruit Nepali citizens to send to different labour destinations, particularly to those countries with which Nepal has signed bilateral labour agreements? 

The second is rather managerial. What has been particularly felt in the last few years is a clear communication gap between jurisdictions. Private sector agencies are considered to have less accountability toward government agencies and or foreign employees. This feeling can be addressed by having regular conversations between recruitment agencies, advocacy organisations and the government with the sole objective of developing a common multilateral understanding of controversial issues. This intervention should be designed so that all measures within the regulatory framework are participatory and thus acceptable to all relevant actors in the foreign employment management cycle. 

Finally, when the government of Nepal prepares to sign bilateral labour agreements or memorandums of understanding, the role of the receiving countries in handling controversies must be drafted carefully. Informed by scientific evidence, the government can and should cooperate with the destination countries, advocacy organisations and campaigns, and the private sector in the countries of origin and destination with the hope of bringing positive changes in the management of foreign employment.

While others argue that there are many more reasons as why someone should learn a new language apart from their native language. Learning a second language or a foreign language is linked to many advantages that far surpass the sole reasons of learning a new language for travelling or working in a foreign land. However, for the sake of playing the devil’s advocate, I’ll say that some people belonging to a different school of thought consider better job opportunities and travelling to be the only motive behind learning a foreign language. I am of the opinion that there are other reasons like learning about a foreign culture, and the bright prospect of cognitive development that propel many monolingual people to study a new language. With ever-increasing globalization and the opening up of international barriers, more and more people choose to emigrate to new and foreign lands in the hope of better job prospects. This often requires them to learn a new tongue. For instance, many people prefer learning languages like English, Spanish, and French, rather than the Russian language because countries speaking the former tongues have shown more affinity towards emigrants and provide a multitude of better job opportunities. This makes many people believe that jobs and sometimes travel are the only driving forces for learning a new tongue, especially for a young learner. On the other hand, some people including myself have researched the pros and cons of learning a foreign language thoroughly and have found that the pros far outweigh the drawbacks. The onset of memory ailments like dementia can be slowed down by cognitive development that comes with learning a foreign language. Furthermore, multilingual people are more confident and can easily acclimate themselves to new and alien surroundings by the virtue of their communication skills that have been expanded and upscaled. They find it easy to overcome language barriers and truly become global citizens speaking the global language. In conclusion, to go through the tough process of honing effective communication skills in a third language or a second language, people realise that it is not just for the sake of travel or work that they are doing this process. Instead, it stems from a deeper love for the language and the confidence that speaking a new tongue instills in them. Question – When living in a foreign country where you have to speak a new language, you can face serious social and practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons and examples in your answer and write at least 250 words.

Language barriers arguably form the backbone of the biggest social and practical problems that people living in a foreign land have to face and overcome often. In my personal opinion, it can also spark serious problems in various countries, however, the widespread use of technology in curbing these issues to a certain extent over the past few decades. People belonging to different cultures can have issues in understanding each other because of speaking different languages and sometimes even because of different ways of pronunciation of the same words. Migration is not on the rise in the twenty-first century and people often move to distant lands in hopes of jobs, travel, and sometimes studying. In such a scenario not speaking the land’s language can become a basis for social problems like discrimination, racism, etc. Interestingly enough, technology has played a pivotal role in curbing the extent of practical problems faced by people when moving to a new land without being savvy with the foreign language. For instance, there are many web-based applications that do the translation job for people and save them the trouble of having to explain their point to the natives merely through vague hand gestures.

By way of conclusion, I stand firm on the point that social problems can far exceed practical problems when migrating to a foreign land without being fluent in the foreign language and perhaps, some language learning could really help in becoming a part of the foreign culture quicker and better. Although, as far as practical problems are concerned, technology is a boon that is eliminating most of them.

“We live in a world, where it is easier than ever before to communicate all over the world without speaking the local language perfectly. Google Translator makes this possible, even if there is no internet.

Especially for travelling it is helpful when you can speak a foreign language, because you can be confronted with unexpected situations. Further you can connect with the locals and experience the country much better by speaking the same language. But for the employment it is important to talk the same language like the clients do. As long as you work for a local company and you can talk in your mother language for the whole day, you don’t need knowledge in a foreign language. On the other side there are studies about the learning process in the youth, which say that you will never learn as easy as in school. Since I have seen my parents learning French in the older age, I believe to the summary of this studies.

In conclusion it makes definitely sense for me to learn a foreign language in school, as long as it is a useful language like English.”

How immigrants are helping boost the U.S. job market without affecting inflation

Blockbuster job growth continues to power the U.S. economy, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting 303,000 payrolls added in March .

Usually, such strong growth might signal that inflation could pick up. If employers see more demand for goods and services, they need to hire more workers — and if there aren’t enough workers, they have to increase pay, which increases the overall cost of running the business.

But while annual price growth, at more than 3%, remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, it is still well below the 9% peak seen in the summer of 2022.

Economists increasingly believe that the post-pandemic surge in immigration is a key reason the economy has been able to grow steadily without pushing inflation higher, as the new arrivals have helped employers fill roles at levels of pay that have kept a lid on overall price growth.

In a note to clients published Friday, titled “Why we have both strong growth and lower inflation,” Goldman Sachs chief U.S. economist David Mericle said rising immigration had boosted labor force growth. As a result, the strong demand that consumers continue to exhibit elsewhere is unlikely to raise prices by much, “if at all,” he said.

In fact, so far, measures of labor market “tightness,” like wages, “have continued to fall or move sideways, not rise,” Mericle said.

“Won’t stronger growth prevent inflation from falling or even reignite it?” he wrote. “We don’t think so.”

The Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan federal agency, was the first to cite the immigration surge that began in 2022 as the primary factor helping to expand the overall size of the U.S. labor force.

This year, the agency increased its projection of how large the U.S. labor force could be in 2033 by 5.2 million people. Most of that increase is expected to be a result of higher projected net immigration.

The Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan think tank, came to a similar conclusion earlier this month, saying the economy can now tolerate a more brisk pace of job growth without adding to cost concerns.“Faster population and labor force growth has meant that employment could grow more quickly than previously believed without adding to inflationary pressures,” Brookings said.

Wendy Edelberg, a former Federal Reserve economist now serving as director of Brookings’ Hamilton Project, told NBC News the net effect of immigration on inflation is not entirely obvious — but is likely marginal. Indeed, Fed Chair Jay Powell has expressed similar observations, saying the effect of the new wave of arrivals is “broadly neutral.”

What is clear, Edelberg said, is that the immigration surge will allow the economy to tolerate higher levels of job growth without overheating.

“Without immigration, if I’d seen an increase of 300,000, I would have been utterly baffled that wages were not higher,” she said, citing the March jobs report released on Friday.

Wage data shows the annual pace of average hourly pay growth has declined to 4.1% in March after hitting a post-pandemic peak of 5.9% in March 2022.

If the supply and demand for labor were truly out of sync, the pace of wage growth would be much higher, likely translating into higher overall inflation.

Instead, thanks to the immigration surge, businesses in the aggregate can tap into the newly growing labor pool to meet continued demand for their goods and services, without having to raise wages significantly to compete for workers.

For many parts of the economy, from federal Social Security payments all the way down to local businesses that may be looking for workers or new customers, immigration is usually a net good, Edelberg said.

At the same time, it tends to put a strain on state and local budgets , she said.

Immigration now ranks as the most volatile domestic issue facing President Joe Biden, with Gallup survey respondents ranking it as the country’s “most important problem,” the first time it has held that position since 2019. Republicans have called on Biden to take extreme measures to stem the entry of migrants, while former President Donald Trump has referred to them as “not humans” and “animals.”

Big cities like New York and Chicago, meanwhile, have faced crises stemming in part from political stunts by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott that have involved sending migrants to those cities at a pace they’re not equipped to handle.

But while the focus of the debate has been on undocumented immigration, the majority of immigrants arriving are actually authorized to work in the U.S., Edelberg said.

Plus, they’re more likely to spend a greater share of their labor income.

“So they’re increasing the demand for goods and services, and helping to supply labor,” she said. “So the net effect on inflation is actually small.”
