Former Corrections Officer Charged With Sex Offense And Smuggling Contraband At FCI Milan

DETROIT - A federal grand returned an indictment yesterday charging a Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Milan corrections officer with having sex with an inmate and smuggling contraband into the prison, United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison announced.

Ison was joined in the announcement by William J. Hannah, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Midwest Region.

According to the indictment, on September 26, 2023, Cara Wozniak, 33, of Milan, Michigan, while serving as a corrections officer, engaged in sexual intercourse with an inmate who was under her custodial authority at FCI Milan. Wozniak was also charged with providing contraband to an inmate from April through November of 2023.

Federal law and prison rules prohibit all sexual interaction between staff members and inmates, as well as the introduction or possession of contraband in prison. Contraband is defined as prohibited materials which can reasonably be expected to cause physical injury or adversely affect the security, safety, or good order of the institution.

Wozniak is charged with committing a sex act with a ward which carries a maximum sentence of up to 15 years’ imprisonment, and a fine of up to $250,000. Wozniak is also charged with the misdemeanor offense of providing contraband in prison, which carries a sentence of up to six months in prison.

United States Attorney Ison said, “Every day, federal corrections officers display uncompromising integrity in carrying out their duties and maintaining the safety and security of our federal prisons. Unfortunately, the allegations in today’s indictment reflect a failure on the part of one corrections officer to maintain that standard. Sexual misconduct by prison officials compromises the safety and security of the whole institution and is completely unacceptable at Milan or any other correctional facility.”

"We trust correctional officers to act with integrity. Instead, Wozniak allegedly abused her authority, sexually abused an inmate, and smuggled contraband into the prison,” said William J. Hannah, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General Midwest Region.

The investigation of these cases was conducted by the Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General. The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton P. Brown.

An indictment is only a charging document and is not evidence of guilt.  A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Harrison Butker isn't apologizing for his remarks suggesting that women should forgo professional careers to become homemakers.

The Kansas City Chiefs player appeared at the Courage Under Fire gala at Regina Caeli Academy on Friday, nearly two weeks after his graduation speech at Benedictine College garnered criticism.

"It is now, over the past few days, my beliefs or what people think I believe have been the focus of countless discussions around the globe," Butker, 28, said in footage shared online. "At the outset, many people expressed a shocking level of hate. But as the days went on, even those who disagreed with my viewpoints shared their support for my freedom of religion."

Butker said he's become a polarizing public figure, but didn't waver on his previous stance.

"It's a decision I've consciously made and one I do not regret at all," Butker said.

Butker has weathered criticism following his remarks at Benedictine College, a small Catholic liberal arts college in Kansas, on May 11. While there, he told female graduates they had been told "diabolical lies" before suggesting they were more excited to create a family than go into the workforce.

"How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?" Butker said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."

Butker then mentioned his wife, whom he said embraced "one of the most important titles of all: homemaker."

"I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God's will in their life," he said.

Women shouldn't be shamed for the path they choose

Butker's comments sparked online debates about women in the workforce .

Phoebe Gavin , a career and leadership coach, told Business Insider that women should have the space and opportunity to determine their future based on their ambitions.

"I am pro-women having choices and women being able to make those choices based on what intrinsically motivates them," Gavin said. "There are some women who are going to choose to embrace motherhood as a primary motivation in their lives, and then there are women who are going to make other choices."

Gavin added some women want both a career and motherhood, while others want neither. None of these choices should be ridiculed, she said.

"There are people who truly believe that is the right decision for them, and if that's what they believe, then I fully embrace, empower, and encourage them to go down that path," she said. "My issue is pushing those sorts of values upon other people."

That's why she takes issue with Benedictine College's decision to choose Butker as a commencement speaker.

"They should have known that he was not the kind of person that they would want to put in front of these grads," Gavin said.

She said it was "challenging" to see young female graduates who had spent at least four years working toward professional careers "being told that they're doing the wrong thing and that they should be doing something else."

Jessica Schaefer, a crisis communications and reputation management expert, echoed Gavin's thoughts. She said commencement speeches are meant to be inspiring, not a platform to share personal opinions.

"As someone who works on a lot of these commencement speeches, it's important that you prepare. The goal is to inspire everyone that's graduating," Schaefer told BI. "It's not a platform for your personal opinion. That's not why you're getting paid to give a commencement speech."

Gavin added that "whatever choice a woman makes, they should be able to make that choice and live without shame."

Since giving his speech, several people have spoken out against Butker and Benedictine College.

The National Football League distanced itself from Butker with a statement praising inclusivity. Teammates Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes said they disagreed with Butker's comments but defended his right to voice his opinion.

And nuns from Benedictine College denounced Butker's speech, saying they disagreed with the suggestion that "being a homemaker is the highest calling" for women.

"We sisters have dedicated our lives to God and God's people, including the many women whom we have taught and influenced during the past 160 years," the statement read. "These women have made a tremendous difference in the world in their roles as wives and mothers and through their God-given gifts in leadership, scholarship, and their careers."

Representatives for Butker said he's not available for further comment.

Benedictine College representatives did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider outside regular business hours.

Man who injured police officer during Capitol riot is sentenced to 5 years in prison

WASHINGTON (AP) — A military veteran who was convicted of injuring a police officer’s hand during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol was sentenced on Friday to five years in prison.

John George Todd III declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced him. The judge said Todd, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, hasn’t shown any remorse for his role in damaging the country’s “fragile” democratic institutions.

“This is not a patriot. This is not conduct becoming of a Marine,” the judge told Todd, 34.

Prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of 12 years and seven months for Todd, who traveled from his Missouri home to attend then-President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6.

“As the country approaches anther contentious election year, one that will see a rematch of the 2020 Presidential election that was at issue for the rioters on January 6, every January 6 sentencing sends a message about the importance of democratic values and the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote .

After entering the Capitol, Todd repeatedly pushed against officers inside the Rotunda, ignored commands to leave and screamed profanities at police.

Todd was carrying a fiberglass pole attached to a flag. When a Metropolitan Police Department officer tried to grab it from him, Todd and the officer wrestled for control of the pole until it splintered and cut the officer’s hand.

The officer, Noah Rathbun, needed seven stitches and missed nine days of work. Todd argued that the officer’s injuries were self-inflicted.

A different rioter, retired New York Police Department officer Thomas Webster, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for attacking Rathbun outside the Capitol earlier that day. Webster swung a flagpole at Rathbun and then tackled him and grabbed his gas mask.

Todd has been jailed since a jury in February convicted him of six counts, including obstruction of the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress for certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory over Trump.

“This was a dangerous first, where the peaceful transition to a new presidential administration was disrupted,” the judge said.

Todd initially was charged with only misdemeanors, but a grand jury indicted him on felony charges after prosecutors discovered video of him assaulting Rathbun.

After his arrest, Todd repeatedly violated the terms of his pretrial release. He moved from Blue Springs, Missouri, to South Carolina to be in his sister’s care.

Todd’s attorneys said he is a combat veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder who needs mental health treatment, not incarceration.

“Incarceration would only exacerbate Mr. Todd’s health and mental health problems,” a defense attorney wrote last year.

Todd was a Marine from 2009 to 2013 and served in Afghanistan, his family said. Todd received an “other than honorable” discharge from the military related to his abuse of alcohol, according to prosecutors.

More than 100 police officers were injured during the riot. Over 1,400 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes . Nearly 900 of them have been sentenced, with roughly two-thirds of them receiving a term of imprisonment ranging from a few days to 22 years .

A Minneapolis police officer, a suspected shooter and a civilian are dead after a shooting in the Whittier neighborhood on Thursday, the department said. Several others are injured.

Officer Jamal Mitchell died in the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in an evening news conference.

“He was a hero, a son, a father, a fiancé, and an officer who was so deeply committed to protecting and serving,” Frey said. “Just a year ago officer Jamal Mitchell was recognized for a heroic act in saving a number of people, an elderly couple, and that is just the kind of person that he was.”

In addition to the dead, a man is injured, a bystander is in critical condition, and an officer and a firefighter were shot but their injuries are not considered life-threatening, officials said.

Minneapolis police said they were responding to a reported double shooting in an apartment building near 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue. Dozens of police vehicles and multiple ambulances began responding to the area around 5:20 p.m.

Mitchell arrived and found an injured person about a block away from the apartment and, as he tried to give medical assistance, was ambushed and shot, according to Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension superintendent Drew Evans.

A second officer arrived and returned fire. The suspect was injured and died at the scene.

Officers found two men shot in the apartment. One died and one was gravely injured, police said. Officials thought the second man was going to die on the way to the hospital but he was still alive as of about 10:15 p.m., Evans said.

Evans said officials believe they know who the suspect is but will release more information soon.

Blaisdell Avenue was closed from Franklin Avenue to 24th Street as swarms of law enforcement responded including the FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and SWAT vehicles. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives St. Paul Field Division said its agents also responded to the scene.

Tyler Carson, who lives in an apartment building next to the scene, said police blocked him as he was trying to exit the garage around the time of the shooting.

“I saw all these people running out from the apartment, they were jumping over the fence of the school over there” on Blaisdell, he said. “I thought, ‘Oh, God, something really bad must have happened.’”

Around 7:15 p.m. police vehicles were arriving to HCMC in downtown Minneapolis, where police vehicles and tape blocked an entrance. Hundreds of law enforcement joined a procession outside HCMC around 10 p.m.

This is the second shooting in Minnesota this year to claim the life of a first responder. Burnsville police officers Matthew Ruge and Paul Elmstrand and firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth were shot and killed Feb. 18 while responding to a call for help involving a man armed and barricaded in a home with seven children inside.

The last time a Minneapolis officer was fatally shot while on duty was in 2002, when officer Melissa Jayne Schmidt was killed, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

"This has been a terrible day for our agency and in law enforcement. And that's happening all too frequently and it affects so many," Minneapolis Police Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell said.
