The latest presentation apps have made it easier than ever to format slides and create professional-looking slideshows without giving off a "this is a template" vibe. Even standard PowerPoint alternatives have updated key features to make it easier than ever to collaborate and create presentations quickly, so you can spend more time prepping for your actual presentation.

If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

After my first round of testing, I went back into the top performers to test any unique or niche features, like AI, brand settings, and interactive content. With that, these are the best presentation apps I found—each one really brings something different or radically easy to the table.

Canva offers one of the most robust free plans of all the presentation apps I tested. The app delays account creation until after you've created your first design, so you can get started building your presentation in seconds. Choose from an almost overwhelming number of beautiful templates (nearly all available for free), including those designed specifically for education or business use cases.

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. Choose from a handful of preset animations to add life to your presentations, or browse the library of audio and video files available to add. And Canva also has a number of options for sharing your presentation, including adding collaborators to your team, sharing directly to social media, and even via QR code.

Present directly from Canva, and let audience members submit their questions via Canva Live. Once you share a link to invite audience members to your presentation, they can send questions for you to answer. As the presenter, you'll see them pop up in your presenter view window, so you can keep the audience engaged and your presentation clear. Alternatively, record a presentation with a talking head bubble—you can even use an AI presenter here—to share remotely.

If you're like me, editing granular spacing issues is the absolute worst part of building a presentation. Beautiful.ai uses artificial intelligence to take a lot of the hassle and granular design requirements out of the presentation process, so you can focus on the content of a presentation without sacrificing professional design. If I needed to make presentations on a regular basis, this is the app I'd use.

Many apps have recently added AI design features, but Beautiful.ai has been doing it for years—and they've perfected the experience of AI design, ensuring the tool's reign as the most streamlined and user-friendly option for AI design.

The editor is a little different from most presentation apps, but it's still intuitive—and you'll start off with a quick two-minute tutorial. When creating a new slide, scroll through "inspiration slides" to find a layout you like; once you choose, the app will pull the layout and automatically adapt it to match the design of the rest of your presentation.

With 10 themes, several templated slides, over 40 fully-designed templates, and more than 20 different color palettes to choose from, Beautiful.ai strikes a perfect balance between automation and customization.

While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Steep learning curve

Struggling to squeeze information into a basic, linear presentation? Give Prezi a try. Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video.

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). When your presentation is ready, you can publish straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads, and any number of other locations.

The best presentation app for collaborating with your team

Pitch, our pick for the best presentation software for collaborating with your team

Pitch pros:

Excellent generative AI feature

Pitch cons:

User interface is a little different than you're used to

Need to collaborate on presentations with your team? Pitch is a Google Slides alternative that gets the job done. As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

The best presentation app for conversational AI

Gamma pros:

Creates fully fleshed-out presentations from a prompt

Conversational chatbot-like experience

Can still manually edit the presentation

Gamma cons:

Not as much granular customization

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

Mentimeter, our pick for the best presentation software for audience engagement

Mentimeter pros:

Simple for participants to interact

Mentimeter cons:

Less granular customizability

Bit of a learning curve

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

Tome, our pick for the best presentation software for generative AI

Top-tier generative AI features

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

For most people, Microsoft 's PowerPoint remains the original and best of all the presentation software platforms out there. While other companies have managed to catch up and offer rival products worthy of consideration, the fact is that PowerPoint's familiar interface and ubiquitous availability means it remains a favorite for the majority of people.

On the one hand, it's long been a staple of the hugely popular Microsoft Office suite, meaning that for most users this is going to be the first - and last - presentation software they are going to need to use.

Additionally, Microsoft has made PowerPoint, along with their other office products, available as free apps (with limited functionality) on both iOS and Android for mobile use, meaning it's even harder to avoid them. And this is before we even consider the inclusion of PowerPoint in Microsoft's cloud-based Microsoft 365.

It does everything necessary that you'd expect of presentation software, allowing you to add text and media to a series of slides, to accompany a talk and other presentations. There are easy-to-use templates included to help spice things up a little, but even a general user with little experience of it is likely to find themselves able to use PowerPoint without much trouble at all.

Overall, it's hard to go wrong with PowerPoint, and although Microsoft 365 has a nominal cost, the apps are free to use even if they do have more limited functionality.

Just like CustomShow, ClearSlide has a niche focus for companies. The platform is targeted at firms looking to generate successful marketing campaigns, pushing sales via presentations (and more), not least through a range of analytics and metrics to work for sales and marketing.

With the product, you can upload a range of files, including PowerPoint, Keynote, PDF, and Excel. ClearSlide is integrated with other platforms, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and Salesforce.

This system is pretty complex and may offer too many irrelevant features for some businesses, but you can create customized content that reflects your company and the message you’re trying to get out to customers. There are also some good metrics and analysis features, and you can sign up for a free trial before making any decisions.

The real strength of ClearSlide comes from its focus on sales and marketing data, not least being able to track user engagement alongside other metrics.

4. Haiku Deck

Any presentation app will allow you to personalize your slides to at least some extent, but Haiku Deck goes one step further than the competition. It comes with a wide range of themes suited to different needs, and you also get access to 40 million free images from the Creative Commons collection.

When it comes to creating a presentation, you have the option to do so on the web, which means your presentation is accessible across a range of mobile devices as well as desktops. Regardless of the device used, you’re able to select from a variety of different fonts, layouts, and filters to make the perfect presentation.

The great thing about these various customization options is that they’re categorized into different industries and use cases. For instance, you’ll find themes for teaching, cooking, real estate, and startups. Most of the features require you to be online, but hopefully, you’ll have a sturdy net connection wherever you go.

5. SlideDog

It’s all too easy to end up creating a presentation that’s unappealing, and the last thing you want to do is make the audience fall asleep. SlideDog lets you combine almost any type of media to create a rich presentation that’s sure to keep the viewers’ peepers open, avoiding the ‘cookie cutter’ look that makes presentations seem dull.

Marketed as a web-based multimedia presentation tool, it gives you the ability to combine PowerPoint presentations, graphics, PDF files, Prezi presentations, web pages, pictures, videos, and movie clips. You can drag these into custom playlists and display them to your audience with ease.

Presentations can also be tailored to the specific audience, as this is a flexible platform that’s capable of skipping ahead, or veering off into a side topic, without having to flip through all the slides to get to a particular bit.

For business users, there are a variety of handy tools available. By downloading Prezi , you can build and edit presentations with your colleagues in real-time, which is perfect for companies with teams based around the globe.

When you have created a presentation you’re happy with, you can present it live (in HD) and send a direct link to viewers. There are some analysis tools here, too – you can see who’s accessed your presentation, which parts of it, and for how long. The app is available for Mac and Windows devices.

Audio Editor

Pick the complexity you need.

Audio editing is the other half of producing polished videos. There is a wide variety of free software packages out there, depending on your needs. Some are simple recording tools to get basic recording tracks on your computer, while others come with advanced tools to make your voice sound its best. Whether it's for a podcast or for video, getting your audio right is crucial for audience retention. You don't need to pick up the paid software packages to get a pro sound, though, and one of these free options will get you going in the right direction.

Audacity has been the best free audio editor for years, and it's not even close. It's not a DAW if you need to create multi-instrument songs, but the two-track editor is enough for most needs. For Windows users, the powerful Cakewalk is a free DAW with unlimited tracks, plug-ins, and MIDI capabilities for advanced audio creation. It's a one-stop software package for composing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering, so the entire audio chain can be handled without learning multiple programs. Oh, and the interface has won awards for its design, so it's easy to learn and use.

Apple users have one of the best free DAWs already installed on their devices, in the form of GarageBand. This pro-level audio studio can handle multiple tracks, instruments, and vocals and comes with a sound library to use in your own creations, including session drummers and percussionists to jam out with.

3D graphics alternatives

If you need to do any 3D graphics work, you know that, along with the steep learning curve, comes a steep purchase price. Or it would, if you didn't pick one of the free alternatives that are used by professionals in many industries. Whether you want 3D models to 3D print, or to animate, or for static images for promotional use, you can find a free alternative that will work for you. The only thing is that most of these tools have a steep learning curve, but they're also widely used, so a quick search will find a host of tutorials to help.

Blender is free and open source software, and will be forever. It's an incredibly powerful 3D CG program that rivals the paid options out there. That's because not only does it support the full 3D pipeline from modeling through to motion tracking, it has a huge community making improvements and tutorials in case you get lost.

Creating 3D assets doesn't have to be hard, and you don't even need to install a program on your computer anymore. Spline runs on your web browser, so you can create from any device, and has generative AI, so you can build from text prompts - or learn the ropes of 3D design the hard way.

Rumba is completely free for enthusiasts to learn 3D animation with a fully-featured pro-grade program. It's more geared towards the animating part of 3D, so you will need to find or make 3D models elsewhere, and bring them into the program to make your masterpiece. And it's compatible with (most) Autodesk Maya rigs, so you don't have to start from scratch if that's what you're used to.

Office software

Even microsoft has a free version.

Office software is an essential part of modern computing, and paid programs keep adding advanced features every year so that they stay ahead of the competition. That's good to know, but think about the last time you used a pivot table, or any of the other advanced tools you paid for. For most users, all they need is the ability to create and edit office documents or spreadsheets, and that basic functionality is baked into every free alternative to office software.

LibreOffice

The big feature for LibreOffice isn't compatibility with every Microsoft 365 document format. That's nice to know, but it's also free to use commercially, which is something that free software often has a proviso about. The suite has a word processor, a spreadsheet tool, and a presentation maker, and also ones for vector diagrams, math functions, and even a database which is something most free office suites leave out.

Microsoft 365 Free Apps

Even Microsoft has a free version of Office, that lives on the web in much the way Google Docs does. The versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint included here might not feature advanced tools like pivot tables, but the basic functionality is and that's all most users care about. And with full compatibility with Microsoft 365, it's a direct replacement.

WPS Office covers all the bases for replacing your paid office suite, with a word processor, spreadsheet, and presention tool in one app. It's a slick interface, and also includes a free PDF reader. The paid version of the software adds PDF editing powers, but if you don't need that this is a great office suite for free.

Antivirus software

With online threats getting more and more sophisticated, you should be running some form of antivirus even if you think you're not a target. That's because everyone on the internet is a target, so every time you browse around, you're at risk. That sounds a little gloomy, but the good news is that even the free antivirus software packages can keep you safe from threats. Some free options even beat the paid packages, and our favorite free antivirus programs are below.

Windows Security

For most users, the best free antivirus is the one that their computer already has. That's Windows Security, which is the new name for Windows Defender, and it does a good job of protecting against most attacks. While it does protect against malicious websites, it only does so in the Edge browser.

Avast Free Antivirus

For a more comprehensive free solution, Avast has you covered. The always-on antivirus is free, and you also get ransomware protection, a firewall, and a VPN with bandwidth limits. That's a lot of features for free, and you might find that you don't need the paid package which adds advanced things like keeping your apps automatically updated.

Malwarebytes

While Windows does a decent job of antivirus, sometimes you need malware removal as well. That's the job of dedicated programs like Malwarebytes Free, to clean up the malware once it's already on your computer. It even clears out tracking cookies or other potentially unwanted visitors to your PC, and is a recommended second line of defense against attack.

Productivity tools

Be more efficient, for less.

The best productivity apps make you better at whatever task you are doing, but that means there isn't really a one-size-fits-all solution. From password managers that keep your secrets safe to grammar checkers and coding environments, productivity apps come in all sorts of flavors. We've picked a few of our favorite free productivity tools below, but this is a tiny cross-section of the apps available. The only thing you need to know is that if you have a specific task to do, there's likely a free software alternative to the paid programs.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, should be using a password manager by now, with unique passwords for every service. Your bank might have good security practices, but what about those tiny websites you buy things from? If one of those gets breached, every site you have an account on can be breached with a credential stuffing attack. Stay safe, use a password manager.

VSCodium is a fully-featured code editor with all the features of Microsoft's VS Code except without the tracking and telemetry that some users find objectionable. That makes it a no-brainer replacement, as it's the same core product. Oh, and it's free, to use, modify, copy, or even use for commercial use, providing the MIT License is mentioned.

PDF-XChange Editor

Most users don't need the complexity of Acrobat for PDF use, and PDF-XChange Editor is perfect as a replacement. It allows for many common editing functions like digital signatures to be added, while retaining compatibility. If you find you require the advanced features, it's a one-time fee to upgrade to the paid version.

While the ZIP function baked into Windows works, it's slow and can't handle quite as many file types as more complete solutions like 7-Zip. This free archiving program integrates into the right-click menu of Windows so it's easy to use and can open pretty much any archive file you can get.

OBS Studio is the best game recording and streaming app for anyone, even above the paid options. It's more user-friendly than ever, with a simple configurator that gets you going, but has the depth you need once your skill level improves to add plugins, effects, and more advanced tools to your streams.

LanguageTool

There's no excuse for incorrect grammar these days, with useful and free software packages like LanguageTool. It lives in your browser as an extension and proofreads your words so that you can be the best you can be, without worrying about pesky rules. The basic checking is some of the best, and it supports over 30 languages, when most checkers only support a few.

We've only scratched the surface when it comes to alternatives for the best paid software programs. If you didn't see the category you're trying to replace, we found some sites whose purpose is to find you alternatives to the programs you use, paid or otherwise.

With the variety of free software packages out there (many of which are in web app form, so they can be used from almost any device) there's really no need to pay for expensive software when you're only going to be using a few of the features. That's doubly true for any subscription-based package, as the fees for those add up faster than you think.

What is Bartender?

For anyone not familiar, Bartender is a simple Mac utility app designed to solve two problems with the menubar.

First, there are apps which install a menubar item and, despite the fact that you’re never going to use it, doesn’t allow you to remove it. (This should, in my view, be one of a number of grievous crimes which lead to automatically failing app review, but that’s another topic for another day.) Bartender lets you permanently hide these.

Second, there are menubar items which you use occasionally, but not often enough to want them visible all the time. So there’s a second option which hides them by default, but a single click will reveal them when needed.

The rise and (potential) fall of Bartender

Former Apple design chief Jony Ive once said that the good design is blindingly obvious after the fact. For me, Bartender was a good example of that principle: As soon as the app was created, it was totally obvious that the functionality should always have been part of macOS.

Bartender first launched way back in 2012, and every year since, I was sure that this was the year it would be Sherlocked by Apple. Yet, amazingly, here we are 12 years later and it still hasn’t happened. So it’s had a long run as a popular app.

But its purchase by a rather unknown developer was a worrying development. By its very nature, the app requires a lot of system privileges, including the ability to take screengrabs of our Macs. These are not powers you want in the hands of a developer unless you are confident they can be trusted.

Applause may well turn out to be trustworthy, but right now all I know is they buy apps, and bought this one without users being told about it. That’s not a great start.

I’ve been using Hidden Bar for a couple of days now, and it does everything I ask of a menubar manager.

There are three sections, with simple bar dividers | between them:

Hidden by default
Permanently hidden

Hold down the CMD key and just drag menubar items to the desired section.

Once done, you can either tap the < expand icon, or create your own choice of keyboard shortcut to display the hidden icons.

There are a few settings, including the all-important one of starting the app at login.

Hidden Bar is free , and has an average rating of 4.5/5 on the Mac App Store.

Police in Burlington, Vermont apologize to students for mock shooting demonstration

Police in Burlington, Vermont have apologized to a group of high school students who were shaken up by a role-playing presentation that involved a mock shooting .

The presentation took place Wednesday when about 20 students from Burlington High School's Year End Studies forensics class visited the Burlington Police Department's headquarters for a field trip, according to a statement from Russ Elek, spokesperson for the Burlington School District, to the VTDigger .

The news outlet, citing an email school officials sent parents and families of the students involved, reports that police reenacted a crime and students unexpectedly heard screaming and fake gunshots behind where they were seated.

The purpose of the presentation "was to make a point about how witness statements can be unreliable, and detectives wanted the event to be as realistic as possible," the VTDigger reports, citing an email written by interim principal Sabrina Westdijk and two teachers in attendance.

"First and foremost, the Burlington Police Department apologizes to any students in attendance who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation," the department said in a news release Thursday.

'About as real-life as you can get'

The department stated that the role-playing scenario involved "three department personnel simulating a robbery scenario" and was not directed toward any students or faculty. Police also said the district contacted them in April about conducting the presentation after a "previous successful presentation" between the programs in the fall of 2023.

According to Elek, school officials "didn't realize the presentation would happen without warning," a claim the Burlington Police Department disputes, according to the VTDigger.

The Burlington Police Department said it communicated details of the scenarios to the school program's staff in May, including saying that the training incident would involve "using fake firearms in a mock shooting." The department said it told program staff the presentation "is about as real life as you can get, and is certainly exactly the sort of thing we deal with most frequently."

'A reflective growth opportunity'

Police said the program staff responded, "I think these students will be fine with the simulation. We will give a heads up to parents and students."

The police department said in the statement it will meet with students and staff Friday to discuss the presentation and its impact.

"We hope that this can be a reflective growth opportunity for all parties," the department said in the statement.

We tested Aptoide, the first free iPhone app store alternative

The popular alternative Android marketplace Aptoide just launched as a challenger to the Apple App Store in Europe. We’ve seen a trickle of stores launch since March when the Digital Markets Act (DMA) forced Apple to support third-party iOS app marketplaces — but nothing has so far managed to upset the balance of power and change the status quo.

Aptoide has been around since 2009 and is primarily known as a Google Play alternative for Android users. The Portugal-based company says it currently hosts 1 million apps for some 400 million users. The iOS app store Aptoide is launching today ( as an invite-only beta ) is a different beast, however, as it only distributes games. It’s the first marketplace of this type available for Apple devices — and its freemium structure could prove very attractive to both developers and users alike.

Can Aptoide thrive where others have struggled? Could its focus on games lure the public in? And could its freemium model carve a path forward for third-party marketplaces? We had a chance to play with a preview of Aptoide to find out.

So far, serious disruption has eluded the alternative iOS marketplaces now available in Europe. Including Aptoide, four are live at the time of writing. The first to launch was Mobivention , a business-focused store that distributes apps to employees. The second was AltStore PAL , an interesting marketplace that had its key selling point of an iOS emulator undercut by Apple finally allowing the software on its own store . The third was Setapp Mobile , a subscription-based service still in a closed beta that focuses on delivering a workbench of productivity tools.

These all came with promises of upending Apple’s monopoly, but so far, progress has been slow. AltStore PAL, for example, launched at the start of April with two apps: Delta and Clip . Now, two months later, it still only has two apps. This, according to its developer, Riley Testut, is because new software has “been stuck in Apple’s notarization process.” Things are going slightly better for Setapp Mobile. The company launched its store with 13 apps in the middle of May and now, about three weeks later, has 37 available.

Now, it’s Aptoide’s turn to try.

This handy guide makes it easy for new users to install a third-party app store.

Installing the Aptoide game store on your iPhone is similar to other marketplaces : fiddly but achievable with persistence. You have to navigate through about a dozen screen interactions that repeatedly warn of imminent danger. Thankfully for first-timers, Aptoide provides a handy illustrated guide of the required steps, and having gone through this process a few times now, I can assure you it gets routine quickly.

Once Aptoide is on your phone, it’s plain sailing. You click on a game, install it, and start playing. Unfortunately, in the state we tested Aptoide, what’s available is not overly impressive. There were only eight basic games (think versions of Solitaire and Hangman) when we tested, and none of them were particularly alluring. This will change, though. Paulo Trezentos — co-founder and CEO of Aptoide — says 100 developers have so far expressed interest in appearing on its iOS marketplace and that “30 of them are currently in the technical integration phase.”

With new games planned to be released weekly, the library will grow quickly — although the majority of these will be titles already available on the App Store, not exclusives. There are also no plans for controversial titles not allowed on Apple’s marketplace, like pornographic or gambling games. Emulators will be allowed “if not infringing on IP,” but these are already a burgeoning category in Apple’s own store.

So, what’s the key selling point? What’s Aptoide offering users that they can’t find on the App Store? Besides a currently stark list of “curated” games, one element Trezentos points to is the way Aptoide combines a freemium model with a rewards structure.

Aptoide is the first third-party marketplace to use an Apple-approved in-app purchases system. For users, this means all the games will be free-to-play, but some will include in-app purchases. How this differs from the App Store is that Aptoide will give “bonuses” to people who regularly spend in-app, something that will work out to be a 5 to 10 percent discount on each purchase.

Earth-shattering? Maybe not — but Aptoide’s attitude toward developers could lead the store to gain some traction.

Aptoide is paying developers between $1,000 and $2,000

According to Trezentos, Aptoide is “developer orientated,” something it showcases with its approach to fees. It charges developers 20 percent for organic in-app purchases generated by the Aptoide iOS marketplace and a 10 percent fee in all other cases — for example, when the developer advertises independently and drives downloads of the app. On the Android store, Aptoide charges 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Apple, on the other hand, charges a 30 percent fee across the board.

On top of this, Aptoide is paying developers between $1,000 and $2,000 to launch a game on its IOS platform, the higher amount going to those who include in-app purchases in their software. The company also handles the Core Technology Fee — a cost of 50 euro cents per annual marketplace install — from its cut of in-app purchases.

A little more detail on the bonus system Aptoide is running for users.

This Core Technology Fee approach differs from the Setapp Mobile and AltStore PAL stores, which pass along the fee directly to users as part of the subscription. Aptoide is in an interesting position as the first third-party iOS app store people can use for free.

This is the real differentiator for Aptoide. Because it’s free to use, it could appeal to a wider audience, making it attractive to more developers. In turn, the store’s friendliness to developers could lead to the launch of a large number of quality games, which could lure in the public. There’s potential there — to a point.

My concerns with Aptoide are threefold: its reliance on in-app purchases; the quality of the titles; and its competitiveness compared to the App Store.

We’re still in the early days of third-party app stores

While a financially successful business model, in-app purchases are broadly looked down upon by tech enthusiasts. And who’s the most likely segment to download a third-party app store in the EU? Nerds. If the library only contains basic games of the type available at launch — and many are already available on Apple’s platform — what reason is there to go through the rigmarole of installing a third-party app store? I’m not certain a small discount in the form of a bonus is enough to encourage broad swaths of the public to bother.

Let’s not forget, though, that we’re still in the early days of third-party app stores. Aptoide and Setapp Mobile are still in closed betas, while AltStore PAL hasn’t even begun to host the apps of other developers yet. Many fans of sideloading may have wished for speedy changes, but it’s not panning out that way.

Three months in, and the alternative app stores that have so far launched in Europe are doing little to jeopardize Apple’s monopoly — and you know Cupertino is feeling pretty satisfied about that.
