Abstracts are used by other researchers to establish the relevance of the study to their own work. Therefore, they should contain the what, why, who, where and how of your project.  

They are typically between 250 – 300 words long, offer a summary of the main findings and present the conclusions, so you should attempt to write an abstract (if requested), after you have finished writing the dissertation.

The table of contents should list all the items included in your dissertation.  

It is a good idea to use the electronic table of contents feature in Word to automatically link it to your chapter headings and page numbers. Attempting to manually create a table of contents means that you will have to adjust your page numbers every time you edit your work before submission, which may waste valuable time!

Introduction

The introduction explains the how, what, where, when, why and who of the research. It introduces the reader to your dissertation and should act as a clear guide as to what it will cover.  

The introduction may include the following content: 

Introduce the topic of the dissertation

  • State why the topic is of interest 
  • Give background information on the subject. 
  • Refer to the main debates in the field

Identify the scope of your research 

  • Highlight what hasn't already been said by the literature  
  • Demonstrate what you seek to investigate, and why 
  • Present the aim of the dissertation. 
  • Mention your research question or hypothesis 

Indicate your approach  

  • Introduce your main argument (especially if you have a research question, rather than hypothesis). 
  • Mention your methods/research design. 
  • Outline the dissertation structure (introduce the main points that you will discuss in the order they will be presented). 

Normally, the introduction is roughly 10% of a dissertation word count. 

Literature Review

The term “literature” in “literature review” comprises scholarly articles, books, and other sources (e.g. reports) relevant to a particular issue, area of research or theory. In a dissertation, the literature review illustrates what the literature already says on your research subject, providing summary and synthesis of such literature.  

It is generally structured by topic, starting from general background and concepts, and then addressing what can be found - and cannot be found - on the specific focus of your dissertation. Indeed, the literature review should identify gaps in the literature, that your research aims to fill. This requires you to engage critically with the literature, not merely reproduce the critical understanding of others.  

In sum, literature reviews should demonstrate how your research question can be located in a wider field of inquiry. Therefore, a literature review needs to address the connections between your work and the work of others by highlighting links between them. In doing so, you will demonstrate the foundations of your project and show how you are taking the line of inquiry forwards.  

By the end of your literature review, your reader should be able to see: 

The gap in knowledge and understanding which you say exists in the field. 

How your research question will work within that gap. 

The work other researchers have carried out and the issues debated in the field. 

That you have a good understanding of the field and that you are critically engaged with the debates (Burnett, 2009).

Theme Chapters

In a thematic structure, the core chapters present analysis and discussion of different themes relevant to answer the research question and support the overall argument of the dissertation. The chapters will include analysis of texts/ research material. They can explore and connect academic theories/research to develop an argument. Stella Cottrell offers some good guidance on how to structure your theme chapters. Each chapter should have the following elements (Cottrell, 2014, p183):

Theme: What is the theme of this chapter? Sequence your themes logically (e.g. from general to specific).  

Argument: What argument does this chapter present?  

Material: What material you will be using for this chapter? 

Clustering: What are the main points you want to make? Deal with one point at a time, and don't jum around? Dedicate your points to sub-headings and paragraphs.  

Sequence: In what order are you going to present the points you want to make in this chapter? Draw an outline of the chapter before starting writing it.  

Introduction and Conclusion: Each chapter should have a short introduction and conclusion. 

The conclusion is the final chapter of your dissertation. It should flow logically from the previously presented text; therefore, you should avoid introducing new ideas, new data, or a new direction.  

Ideally, the conclusion should leave the reader with a clear understanding of the discovery or argument you have advanced.  

This can be done by: 

Summarising and synthesising your main findings and how they relate to your research question or hypotheses  

Demonstrating the relevance and importance of your work in the wider context of your field. For example, what recommendations would you make for future research? What do we know now that we didn’t know before? 

Link your conclusion to your introduction as both frame your dissertation. 

A conclusion is roughly five to ten percent of the word count of the dissertation. 

Avoid excessive detail. Decide what your reader needs to know. 

Don’t introduce any new information such as theories, data or ideas.  

Sum up the main points of your research.  

Bibliography

While writing your dissertation, you would have referred to the works and research of many different authors and editors in your field of study. These works should be acknowledged in the bibliography where you will list writers alphabetically by surname. 

For example: 

Poloian, L.R. (2013).  Retailing principles: global, multichannel, and managerial viewpoints.  New York: Fairchild.  Biggs, J. and Tang, C. (2011).  Teaching for quality learning at university . Maidenhead: Open University Press.  Ramsay, P., Maier, P. and Price, G. (2010).  Study skills for business and management students . Harlow: Longman. 

Unless otherwise specified by your module leader, the University uses the Harvard (author-date) style of citing and referencing. For more guidance and support on how to reference effectively check out the  Referencing Guide . You can also  book an appointment  with an Academic Engagement Librarian for extra help with referencing. 

While the main results of your study should be placed in the body of your dissertation, any extra information can be placed in the appendices chapter. This supplementary information, for instance, can consist of graphs, charts, or tables that demonstrate less significant results or interview transcripts that would disrupt the flow of the main text if they were included within it.  

You can create one long appendix section or divide it into smaller sections to make it easier to navigate. For example, you might want to have an appendix for images, an appendix for transcripts, and an appendix for graphs. Each appendix (each graph or chart, etc.) should have its own number and title. Further, the sources for all appendices should be acknowledged through referencing and listed in the bibliography. 

Don’t forget to mention each appendix at least once during your dissertation! This can be done using brackets in the following way: (see appendix 1).

The best way to understand what effective academic writing looks like is to review academic writing examples.

Let's begin with four of the most common types of academic writing: research proposals, dissertations, abstracts, and academic articles. We'll be examining each type of writing and providing academic writing samples of each. 

Whether you aim to earn funding for a passion project or are stymied by how to format an abstract, these academic writing examples will help you nail your next undertaking.

Academic Writing Example 1: Research Proposals

A research proposal is an outline of the proposed research of a PhD candidate, a private researcher, or someone hoping to obtain a research grant . 

Your proposal should put your best foot forward: It details your intended research question and how it relates to existing research, makes an argument for why your research should be chosen for advancement or funding, and explains the deliverables you hope to achieve with your research. 

A more detailed look at what proposal writing is and what goes into a research proposal may also be beneficial. Every proposal is different because every project is different. Proposal requirements also differ according to the university or funding agency that reviews the proposal. 

Research Proposal Structure

A cover letter summarizing your proposal and showcasing why you should be chosen

An introduction or abstract

An explanation of the background, purpose, and significance of your research

A research plan or methodology that includes a timeline (a Gantt chart may be beneficial)

Building on the work of the three foundational sociological theorists—Marx, Weber, and Durkheim—and Mark Traugott's theory of the "insurgent barricade," this proposed research will analyze the appearance, use, and disappearance of barricade warfare as an effective battle strategy. 

Focusing on these three theorists, this research will determine which theory or theories best explain the life cycle of barricade warfare, focusing in particular on its disappearance. A brief but comprehensive history of barricade warfare will be provided in addition to the theoretical explanations of barricade warfare's utility.

Research Proposal Writing Tips

Before you format your proposal, contact your targeted university, private organization, or funding agency to confirm what they require for proposals. Then, try to follow this format as closely as possible.

Be detailed when outlining your goals and your funding needs. Connect the objectives of the research to the resources you're requesting.

Be realistic in what you ask for as far as resources—don't ask for more or less than you need, and show evidence to justify your choices.

Don't dedicate too much text in your proposal to describing past research. A summary of key points, arguments, theories, and how your research will build on them should suffice.

Remember that no matter how good your proposal is, it might be rejected. You're likely up against dozens or even hundreds of other candidates who have equally sound proposals. Don't be discouraged if this happens. See it as a learning opportunity for your next proposal.

Academic Writing Example 2: Dissertations

A dissertation is a body of writing that represents original research and is generally written as part of a PhD or master's program. 

Typically, it builds on previous research in the field to make a significant contribution or advancement. You may benefit from more detailed information on what a dissertation is , how to write a dissertation , and how to edit a dissertation .

Academic Writing Sample: Dissertation Excerpt

There are two options for choosing a unit of analysis for this phenomenon: the social artifact (erected barricades) or the social interaction (the collaboration of insurgents engaged in barricade warfare). The best choice is social interaction. 

Most individual occurrences of barricade warfare involve the construction of more than one barricade, and the number of barricades is not necessarily a valid indicator of the sociological magnitude of an insurgence. The most relevant choice is an insurgence, the event of a conflict involving barricade warfare.

Dissertation Writing Tips

Remember to bear in mind the significance of your study. It doesn't have to be paradigm shifting, but you want to infuse the dissertation with reminders of why your research is important.

Don't get bogged down in trying to show that your research is one of a kind or uniquely contributive to the body of research. It likely isn't, and it's more effective to show how you are building on previous research .

Remember to check with your college or university to ensure that you're formatting your dissertation according to the school's expectations.

Ask your advisor questions when you need to.

Be prepared to make alterations to your dissertation according to your thesis committee's suggestions. This doesn't mean you did a bad job—it just means there's room for improvement.

The abstract is actually a component of other forms of academic writing, such as scholarly articles and dissertations. The abstract acts as a comprehensive outline of your paper in paragraph form.

Academic Writing Sample: Abstract

Barricade warfare has occurred across several spectra, but most notably, it occurred almost exclusively in a 300-year period between the 16th and 19th centuries. Each instance had an inciting incident, but a common thread was the culture of revolution: a revolutionary tradition based on the belief that injustice was being carried out and that, in this case, barricade insurgence was the way to resolve it. 

This study uses the theories of Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim to analyze barricade warfare, its appearance, and its disappearance. Ultimately, neither theory can independently explain this phenomenon. 

Marx offers a reasonable explanation for why barricade warfare may have died, but his theory is difficult to test empirically and fails to explain the absence of recurrences. Conversely, Durkheim's theory is much easier to observe and can explain why barricade warfare has not experienced a renaissance. However, he offered no reason as to why it died in the first place. 

These two theoretical orientations complement each other nicely and, ultimately, neither can stand alone.

Notice that this abstract comes in at under 200 words (a common limit) but nevertheless covers the background of the study, how it was approached, and the results and conclusions of the research.

Abstract Writing Tips

Be conscious of your word count. Stay under the limit.

Check with your school or target journal to make sure special formatting is not required.

Don't use abbreviations or citations in the abstract.

Don't simply restate your thesis or copy your introduction. Neither of these is an abstract.

Remember that your abstract often gives readers their first impressions of your work. Despite its short length, it deserves a lot of attention.

Academic articles are pieces of writing intended for publication in academic journals or other scholarly sources. They may be original research studies, literature analyses, critiques , or other forms of scholarly writing.

Academic Writing Sample: Article Excerpt

"Those great revolutionary barricades were places where heroes came together" (Hugo, 2008). This description by Victor Hugo of the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris comes from his seminal work of fiction, Les Miserables. 

Although the account is fictionalized, it is deeply representative of what historian Mark Traugott (2010, p. 225) terms the "culture of revolution." This spirit of heroic response to social injustice swept across Europe during the second half of the millennium and was characterized in part by barricade warfare. 

The phenomenon of the insurgent barricade has essentially disappeared, however, leaving no trace of its short-lived but intense epoch, and the question of why this happened remains a mystery. The theories of Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim, when taken together, provide a compelling explanation for the disappearance of barricade warfare, and the tenets of each theory will be examined to explain this phenomenon.

Follow these detailed steps for writing an article and publishing it in a journal .

Make sure that you follow all of your target journal's guidelines.

Have a second set of educated eyes look over your article to correct typos, confusing language, and unclear arguments.

How To Write A Research Proposal

A Straightforward How-To Guide (With Examples)

Writing up a strong research proposal for a dissertation or thesis is much like a marriage proposal. It’s a task that calls on you to win somebody over and persuade them that what you’re planning is a great idea. An idea they’re happy to say ‘yes’ to. This means that your dissertation proposal needs to be   persuasive ,   attractive   and well-planned. In this post, I’ll show you how to write a winning dissertation proposal, from scratch.

Before you start:

– Understand exactly what a research proposal is – Ask yourself these 4 questions

The 5 essential ingredients:

  • The title/topic
  • The introduction chapter
  • The scope/delimitations
  • Preliminary literature review
  • Design/ methodology
  • Practical considerations and risks 

What Is A Research Proposal?

The research proposal is literally that: a written document that communicates what you propose to research, in a concise format. It’s where you put all that stuff that’s spinning around in your head down on to paper, in a logical, convincing fashion.

Convincing   is the keyword here, as your research proposal needs to convince the assessor that your research is   clearly articulated   (i.e., a clear research question) ,   worth doing   (i.e., is unique and valuable enough to justify the effort), and   doable   within the restrictions you’ll face (time limits, budget, skill limits, etc.). If your proposal does not address these three criteria, your research won’t be approved, no matter how “exciting” the research idea might be.

How do I know I’m ready?

Before starting the writing process, you need to   ask yourself 4 important questions .  If you can’t answer them succinctly and confidently, you’re not ready – you need to go back and think more deeply about your dissertation topic .

You should be able to answer the following 4 questions before starting your dissertation or thesis research proposal:

  • WHAT is my main research question? (the topic)
  • WHO cares and why is this important? (the justification)
  • WHAT data would I need to answer this question, and how will I analyse it? (the research design)
  • HOW will I manage the completion of this research, within the given timelines? (project and risk management)

If you can’t answer these questions clearly and concisely,   you’re not yet ready   to write your research proposal – revisit our   post on choosing a topic .

If you can, that’s great – it’s time to start writing up your dissertation proposal. Next, I’ll discuss what needs to go into your research proposal, and how to structure it all into an intuitive, convincing document with a linear narrative.

The 5 Essential Ingredients

Research proposals can vary in style between institutions and disciplines, but here I’ll share with you a   handy 5-section structure   you can use. These 5 sections directly address the core questions we spoke about earlier, ensuring that you present a convincing proposal. If your institution already provides a proposal template, there will likely be substantial overlap with this, so you’ll still get value from reading on.

For each section discussed below, make sure you use headers and sub-headers (ideally, numbered headers) to help the reader navigate through your document, and to support them when they need to revisit a previous section. Don’t just present an endless wall of text, paragraph after paragraph after paragraph…

Top Tip:   Use MS Word Styles to format headings. This will allow you to be clear about whether a sub-heading is level 2, 3, or 4. Additionally, you can view your document in ‘outline view’ which will show you only your headings. This makes it much easier to check your structure, shift things around and make decisions about where a section needs to sit. You can also generate a 100% accurate table of contents using Word’s automatic functionality.

Ingredient #1 – Topic/Title Header

Your research proposal’s title should be your main research question in its simplest form, possibly with a sub-heading providing basic details on the specifics of the study. For example:

“Compliance with equality legislation in the charity sector: a study of the ‘reasonable adjustments’ made in three London care homes”

As you can see, this title provides a clear indication of what the research is about, in broad terms. It paints a high-level picture for the first-time reader, which gives them a taste of what to expect.   Always aim for a clear, concise title . Don’t feel the need to capture every detail of your research in your title – your proposal will fill in the gaps.

Ingredient #2 – Introduction

In this section of your research proposal, you’ll expand on what you’ve communicated in the title, by providing a few paragraphs which offer more detail about your research topic. Importantly, the focus here is the   topic   – what will you research and why is that worth researching? This is not the place to discuss methodology, practicalities, etc. – you’ll do that later.

You should cover the following:

  • An overview of the   broad area   you’ll be researching – introduce the reader to key concepts and language
  • An explanation of the   specific (narrower) area   you’ll be focusing, and why you’ll be focusing there
  • Your research   aims   and   objectives
  • Your   research question (s) and sub-questions (if applicable)

Importantly, you should aim to use short sentences and plain language – don’t babble on with extensive jargon, acronyms and complex language. Assume that the reader is an intelligent layman – not a subject area specialist (even if they are). Remember that the   best writing is writing that can be easily understood   and digested. Keep it simple.

The introduction section serves to expand on the  research topic – what will you study and why is that worth dedicating time and effort to?

Note that some universities may want some extra bits and pieces in your introduction section. For example, personal development objectives, a structural outline, etc. Check your brief to see if there are any other details they expect in your proposal, and make sure you find a place for these.

Ingredient #3 – Scope

Next, you’ll need to specify what the scope of your research will be – this is also known as the delimitations . In other words, you need to make it clear what you will be covering and, more importantly, what you won’t be covering in your research. Simply put, this is about ring fencing your research topic so that you have a laser-sharp focus.

All too often, students feel the need to go broad and try to address as many issues as possible, in the interest of producing comprehensive research. Whilst this is admirable, it’s a mistake. By tightly refining your scope, you’ll enable yourself to   go deep   with your research, which is what you need to earn good marks. If your scope is too broad, you’re likely going to land up with superficial research (which won’t earn marks), so don’t be afraid to narrow things down.

Ingredient #4 – Literature Review

In this section of your research proposal, you need to provide a (relatively) brief discussion of the existing literature. Naturally, this will not be as comprehensive as the literature review in your actual dissertation, but it will lay the foundation for that. In fact, if you put in the effort at this stage, you’ll make your life a lot easier when it’s time to write your actual literature review chapter.

There are a few things you need to achieve in this section:

  • Demonstrate that you’ve done your reading and are   familiar with the current state of the research   in your topic area.
  • Show that   there’s a clear gap   for your specific research – i.e., show that your topic is sufficiently unique and will add value to the existing research.
  • Show how the existing research has shaped your thinking regarding   research design . For example, you might use scales or questionnaires from previous studies.

When you write up your literature review, keep these three objectives front of mind, especially number two (revealing the gap in the literature), so that your literature review has a   clear purpose and direction . Everything you write should be contributing towards one (or more) of these objectives in some way. If it doesn’t, you need to ask yourself whether it’s truly needed.

Top Tip:  Don’t fall into the trap of just describing the main pieces of literature, for example, “A says this, B says that, C also says that…” and so on. Merely describing the literature provides no value. Instead, you need to   synthesise   it, and use it to address the three objectives above.

 If you put in the effort at the proposal stage, you’ll make your life a lot easier when its time to write your actual literature review chapter.

Ingredient #5 – Research Methodology

Now that you’ve clearly explained both your intended research topic (in the introduction) and the existing research it will draw on (in the literature review section), it’s time to get practical and explain exactly how you’ll be carrying out your own research. In other words, your research methodology.

In this section, you’ll need to   answer two critical questions :

  • How   will you design your research? I.e., what research methodology will you adopt, what will your sample be, how will you collect data, etc.
  • Why   have you chosen this design? I.e., why does this approach suit your specific research aims, objectives and questions?

In other words, this is not just about explaining WHAT you’ll be doing, it’s also about explaining WHY. In fact, the   justification is the most important part , because that justification is how you demonstrate a good understanding of research design (which is what assessors want to see).

Some essential design choices you need to cover in your research proposal include:

  • Your intended research philosophy (e.g., positivism, interpretivism or pragmatism )
  • What methodological approach you’ll be taking (e.g., qualitative , quantitative or mixed )
  • The details of your sample (e.g., sample size, who they are, who they represent, etc.)
  • What data you plan to collect (i.e. data about what, in what form?)
  • How you plan to collect it (e.g., surveys , interviews , focus groups, etc.)
  • How you plan to analyse it (e.g., regression analysis, thematic analysis , etc.)
  • Ethical adherence (i.e., does this research satisfy all ethical requirements of your institution, or does it need further approval?)

This list is not exhaustive – these are just some core attributes of research design. Check with your institution what level of detail they expect. The “ research onion ” by Saunders et al (2009) provides a good summary of the various design choices you ultimately need to make – you can   read more about that here .

Don’t forget the practicalities…

In addition to the technical aspects, you will need to address the   practical   side of the project. In other words, you need to explain   what resources you’ll need   (e.g., time, money, access to equipment or software, etc.) and how you intend to secure these resources. You need to show that your project is feasible, so any “make or break” type resources need to already be secured. The success or failure of your project cannot depend on some resource which you’re not yet sure you have access to.

Another part of the practicalities discussion is   project and risk management . In other words, you need to show that you have a clear project plan to tackle your research with. Some key questions to address:

  • What are the timelines for each phase of your project?
  • Are the time allocations reasonable?
  • What happens if something takes longer than anticipated (risk management)?
  • What happens if you don’t get the response rate you expect?

A good way to demonstrate that you’ve thought this through is to include a Gantt chart and a risk register (in the appendix if word count is a problem). With these two tools, you can show that you’ve got a clear, feasible plan, and you’ve thought about and accounted for the potential risks.

Tip – Be honest about the potential difficulties – but show that you are anticipating solutions and workarounds. This is much more impressive to an assessor than an unrealistically optimistic proposal which does not anticipate any challenges whatsoever.

Final Touches: Read And Simplify

The final step is to edit and proofread your proposal – very carefully. It sounds obvious, but all too often poor editing and proofreading ruin a good proposal. Nothing is more off-putting for an assessor than a poorly edited, typo-strewn document. It sends the message that you either do not pay attention to detail, or just don’t care. Neither of these are good messages. Put the effort into editing and proofreading your proposal (or pay someone to do it for you) – it will pay dividends.

When you’re editing, watch out for ‘academese’. Many students can speak simply, passionately and clearly about their dissertation topic – but become incomprehensible the moment they turn the laptop on. You are not required to write in any kind of special, formal, complex language when you write academic work. Sure, there may be technical terms, jargon specific to your discipline, shorthand terms and so on. But, apart from those,   keep your written language very close to natural spoken language   – just as you would speak in the classroom. Imagine that you are explaining your project plans to your classmates or a family member. Remember, write for the intelligent layman, not the subject matter experts. Plain-language, concise writing is what wins hearts and minds – and marks!

Stock Market Opens Ahead Of Fed Chair Powell

My last article , published in Oct. 2023, argued for a BUY thesis on Goldman Sachs Group ( NYSE: GS ) when it was trading near its tangible book value at that time. As argued in our article:

Buying good banks such as GS at (or near) their tangible book value ("TBV") is a no-brainer for us. It's a deal where we are only paying for the hard assets (those that can be easily valued and liquidated) and getting everything else for free - such as its future earnings, brand name, customer relationships, et al.

As seen in the chart below, the stock has indeed delivered market-beating returns since then. To wit, GS enjoyed a price appreciation of more than 39% and a total return close to 42%, almost doubling the S&P 500's return in the same period.

However, such a sizable price rally has weakened the BUY thesis because of the heightened valuation risks. The chart below shows the GS' price-to-tangible book value ratio in the past few years. As seen, the stock traded below TBV a couple of times (and the Oct. 2023 time frame was one of them). Currently, the P/TBV ratio is 1.379x, not only far above my ideal entry point of 1x but also above its historical average of 1.146x by a good margin.

Next, I will analyze some of the other concerns that have developed since my last writing.

Profitability pressure

Besides the heightened valuation risks just mentioned, I also anticipate some profitability pressure in the near future. Other analysts seem to share the same view as reflected in the chart below. As seen, in the past 90 days, a total of 15 analysts revised the next quarter's EPS forecast downward and only 2 revised it upward.

The top concerns on my mind are uncertain macroeconomic conditions and operation costs. Inflation remains stubbornly elevated, and as a result, there is no definitive direction or timeframe for interest rate changes in my view. Sure enough, if interest rates (and inflation) stay elevated, it could buoy GS fixed income business. Nevertheless, high rates mostly like would cause a slowdown in some capital market activity and negatively impact GS's other segments. Also, if inflation persists, I anticipate operating costs, mostly compensation and benefits expenses, to further increase. And such increases would weigh on its bottom line. I think the bottom has already been feeling such pressure recently as reflected in the data provided below.

To wit, the chart shows GS's profit margin (top panel) and its ROE, return on equity (bottom panel), compared to its historical average in the past few years. As seen, GS's profit margin has recently slipped from its peak substantially. Its profit margin currently hovers around 18.41%, not only far below its recent peak level of around 34% but also far below its historical average of 26.52% by a good gap. The bottom panel paints the same picture in terms of its ROE. Despite the help of higher interest income due to elevated rates, its current ROE of 7.27% is only about 1/3 of its recent peak of around 21% and also below its historical average of 11.95% by a large margin.

Other risks and final thoughts

Besides the above valuation and fundamental factors, its technical trading pattern also sends mixed signals to me. The next chart shows its trading pattern in the past 6 months. Combined with the fundamental analysis above, I think GS could be trading in a sideways consolidation window of around $400 for the next few months to come. On the positive side, the stock recently broke out the $400 resistance level (also happens to be about the 20-day moving average) and has stayed there thus far. However, now how little trading volume has occurred in this price range (shown by the horizontal volume bars on the chart). Such low volume indicates a lack of conviction from both new buyers at this new price level in my interpretation. In contrast, the vast majority of volume for recent trading occurred in the $380 to $390 range (as shown by the two longest horizon bars). The stock would have a difficult time finding a definitive upward momentum until investors in this range are replaced by more enthusiastic ones.

I want to be crystal clear that I am not arguing for a bearish thesis on GS. It is a strong investment bank in my view and there are plenty of positives going on also, especially in the long term. It is the leader in M&A activity and equity underwriting in my view. And I have no doubt that it is best poised to benefit if/when the capital markets begin to show signs of pickup. Management has also been making some key strategic improvements to position its growth in the future. For example, the company has been streamlining its consumer businesses, divesting its non-core GreenSky portfolio, and completing the selling of essentially all of its Marcus personal loan portfolio in 2023. These efforts should help to better focus the bank on its core business, help to control costs, and also bolster margins in the future.

To conclude, the goal of this article is to downgrade my rating on GS from BUY to HOLD. To reiterate, I am NOT trying to argue that GS is a bad bank. To the opposite, my view is that it offers compelling long-term growth catalysts with its strong brand recognition, talent pool, and focus on high-margin investment banking activities. My downgrade is mainly motivated by near-term risk/reward analysis. The current valuation appears stretched compared to historical averages and I see a few signs of profitability pressure. Additionally, weak technical indicators suggest a sideways consolidation window in the near term. Given these considerations, I do not think GS would be able to provide the level of returns it did in the past few months.

Data Flow Analysis for Go

GoLand 2023.3 comes with support for data flow analysis (DFA). In this post, we’ll introduce the feature, explain how it works, and show some real-world examples of how DFA can detect bugs on the fly!

Thanks to the CLion team for helping us by porting their powerful DFA engine. For now, the GoLand engine only implements a limited number of DFA features, but more will be added in subsequent releases. What is data flow analysis?

DFA is a type of static code analysis that analyzes how data flows through a program. In basic terms, it calculates the possible values of variables at different points in the program’s execution. With this information, you can find various potential bugs, such as nil dereferences, endless loops, constant conditions, and other incorrect or atypical program behavior.

Let’s look at a straightforward example of DFA in action in the form of a simple function:

A common way to perform DFA starts with building a control flow graph (CFG) of the analyzed function. The CFG of this dummy function is provided below. For clarity, all statements (lines of code) are numbered according to their corresponding code snippet.

You can think about CFG as a simple graph that reflects the function’s execution. The graph nodes correspond to code blocks, and the edges reflect conditional and unconditional jumps between them. You don’t need to know the exact formal definition of a CFG or how to build them for this article, but if you’d like to learn about CFGs, you can visit this link .

Once the CFG has been built, the main stage of the analysis can begin. During this stage, the DFA computes all of the possible values of variables that can follow each function statement. Roughly speaking, this can be done by propagating values through statements (such as assignments) and the edges of the CFG, taking into account the reachability of the CFG’s nodes.

For example, the possible value set of the variable r after statement 9 is {nil, new(Resource)} . The nil value is obtained from statement 1 by propagating it through the path 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 9. The new(Resource) value is obtained by propagating it through the path 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 -> 9, taking into account assignments on lines 5 and 9.

We can use the information obtained about variable values to find potential bugs in the corresponding programs. For example, since we know that, after statement 9, the variable r can be nil , that means there can be a nil dereference on line 10.

Challenges of data flow analysis

As an introduction to the potential pitfalls and difficulties associated with implementing data flow analysis, let’s take a look at a slightly modified version of our previous example function:

DFA, like other static analysis tools, over-approximates the behavior of programs. In our case, this means that DFA computes the upper bound of possible variable values. In this example, data flow analysis infers that the possible value set of the variable init in statement 10 is {false, true} . Hence, both the branches of the condition on line 10 are reachable, which means an execution can reach statement 11. In statement 11, the value set of variable r is {nil, new(Resource)} . Thus, we can infer that there is a potential nil dereference on line 11. 

But that’s not really true. In fact, the variable init can take both true and false values at statement 10. However, the reachability of the condition init == true also depends on the condition initializeResource == true . If the latter is met, then init can only take the value true, and if it isn’t met, then init can only be false. To identify such cases, we must use contexts. Let’s assume that we’re analyzing a function in two different contexts. The first context corresponds to a case where initializeResource is true , the second one corresponds to a case where initializeResource is false . These contexts are most easily described as a clone of the CFG:

As you can see, there are two different contexts (surrounded by a dashed border). In each context, we can analyze statements 9, 10, and 11 in different ways. For example, in statement 10 of the context initializeResource == true , the variable init can only take a true value, and variable r can only take a new(Resource) value. Therefore, in this context, statement 11 is reachable, but a nil dereference isn’t possible. In statement 10 of the context initializeResource == false , variable r can take a nil value. Since the value of init can only be false , statement 11 is not reachable in this context and therefore a nil dereference isn’t possible. As such, a nil dereference cannot occur in either context.

Using contexts in static analysis allows us to improve the quality of the analysis and weed out false-positives. To support this, exit statements of the if statement are split into two different contexts, duplicating the subsequent nodes of the control flow graph and analyzing them independently to identify all the possible data paths.

The capabilities of data flow analysis in GoLand

Constant conditions detection. Constant conditions represent a crucial type of data flow inspection. The constant condition inspection uses the DFA execution data to determine if certain conditions are constant. Here are two examples:

Example 1: In this example, DFA has deduced that the condition err != nil is always false . To show that this is indeed the case, let’s consider what values the err variable can take in the condition on line 191. There are two main cases – when allF is true and when allF is false after the for loop is executed. If allF is true after the for loop is executed, then err will be nil on line 191, otherwise there will be a return from the function on line 186. The remaining eventuality, when allF is false after the for loop is executed, can only happen if line 177 is reachable. After line 177 is executed, we can be sure of two things: firstly, that err is nil (otherwise the execution of the loop would have continued on line 175), and secondly, that the execution of the loop has been interrupted, and therefore the variable err won’t be assigned any other value. Hence, in cases where allF is false , the variable err can only ever be nil . Thus, the condition err != nil is always false .

Example 2: Here is a simpler example in which DFA deduces that the condition r0k != nil on line 193 is always true . This happens because the implicit dereference r0k.License is present on line 191, after which the variable r0k cannot be nil . Although the derived constant condition inspection does not accurately show a real problem in the code, it reveals strange behavior in the program. In fact, issues could become apparent at runtime after the potential nil dereference of the variable r0k on line 191, as the author of the code implies that r0k can be nil .

These examples show how the constant condition inspection can allow you to identify peculiar points or strange behavior in the program’s code.

Potential nil dereference. DFA can detect a nil dereference for a variable even in code that seems absolutely normal to the naked eye. Let’s see how this is possible:

Example 3: In this example, DFA infers that there can be a nil dereference of the variable conf on line 273. This may seem strange because the code takes into account cases where the variable conf is nil . In such a case, there should be a return from the function on line 269, and so dereference of the conf variable shouldn’t be reachable. However, there are actually two different conf variables. The first one is declared on line 249 and the second on line 261. Thus, the last declaration shadows the previous one.

This can lead to a nil dereference. Let’s assume that the first conf variable (line 249) is nil but the second conf variable (line 261) is not nil , and let’s also assume that the corresponding error variable is nil . In this case, there is no return from the function on lines 262 and 269, which means we reach the conf dereference on line 273. This dereference corresponds to the first conf variable and causes issues at runtime. For this reason, we should be careful with nested short variable declarations!

Example 4 : DFA deduces a potential nil dereference of the variable pod on line 260. This function takes into account the nilablility of the variable pod (there is a condition pod != nil on line 254), so the author of the code implies that the variable pod can be nil within the if statement. But in this case, there will be a nil dereference on line 260.

Error may be not nil . This inspection reports cases in which variables might have nil or an unexpected value because of the associated error that is not checked for being non-nil .

The analysis is currently intra-procedural and does not consider user-imposed contracts on the function. Therefore, in specific situations, there may be false positives. For cases such as these, you can use a quick-fix to ask the DFA not to analyze or report these errors.

In the example provided, the variable file could either have the value nil or an unexpected value if err is not nil.
