⌚ How to Write a Time Management Essay: Do’s and Don’ts

🏆 best research titles about time management, 📌 most interesting time management topics to write about, 👍 good research topics about time: management & organization, ❓ time management essay questions.

When writing a Time Management Essay, it may be easy to revert to merely enumerating and explaining how to achieve perfection through various approaches. While this is an essential part of such essays, you should not forget about other aspects of it. Here are some examples of what you should do in your paper:

  • Explain the intent of your essay. Are you teaching stress management tactics to save people the time they spend worrying or discipline? Your readers should be aware of your subject.
  • When mentioning a tactic, explain its purpose. People will be more intent to listen to you when they understand the intent behind the ideas that you are presenting. Compare these statements: “Keeping a bullet journal helps manage time better” and “A bullet journal’s purpose is helping people get subconsciously ready for today’s tasks.” Which one attempts to clarify the process?
  • Describe the mechanisms behind the outlined techniques. Doing so helps people adjust any goal-setting process to their own needs rather than blindly following it.
  • Use credible sources to back up your claims. For example, when writing about mind mapping, you can reference some of the studies conducted on this method.
  • If you can, give precedents of the successful implementation of the idea that you are describing. Mention people or even companies that have benefited from applying these methods to their daily working process.

All this advice should be used together with standard essay-writing rules. Outlining and brainstorming may save you, the writer, time that you would have spent on rewriting faulty paragraphs. You should do your research beforehand and structure your work so that the topics within it do not overlap.

Additionally, reference credible book and journal titles since your audience will believe factual, source-supported evidence more willingly.

Finally, when it comes to thinking about time management essay titles, choose one that is reflective of your subject and approach it. Each structural choice should help you further your thesis statement, linking to it and helping your readers follow your train of thought.

There are other things you should avoid doing when covering your topic. All of them center on the idea that time management essay topics should be respectful of the reader. Do not:

  • Write about your audience as if they are incompetent. Advice that seems condescending place is often unappreciated and neglected.
  • Name-drop inventors and techniques with no explanation. Doing so will only confuse your readers needlessly and make you seem unaware of your subject yourself.
  • Plagiarize from anywhere, including time management essay samples. Gaining inspiration is one thing, while purposefully copying and not referencing stolen content is an academic crime.
  • Leave your paragraphs inconclusive. Apart from academically referenced facts, you should also voice your own resolutions that your used sources support.
  • Promise your readers a solution to all of their problems. You are merely demonstrating sample means to better anyone’s time-management. Using these methods is an entirely different thing.

Other evident don’ts are those that your instructor should outline. Do not ignore the rules of essay writing that have been stated to you explicitly, such as the maximum word count. Your essay’s structure is reflective of your discipline and time-management.

Therefore, a careless outline or a disregard for the rules demonstrates that your work has had no positive effect on you and may have the same outcome on your readers.

Time Management Essay

We have always considered time to be one of the most essential and precious things of our life. Our parents and grandparents always told us that time once gone will never come back. So it is better not to think about the time that has already passed but it is important to focus on the present, considering this time to be good and blissful.

In the modern era, when everyone is leading a very busy life, and everyone has different kinds of things to put together, instead of finding out the fastest and easiest way to solve our problems to get the maximum benefits, we should always try to plan to work hard towards completing whatever we have in hand today, that is the most important or urgent task of the day and execute them, keeping our goals in view. We know there is no comparison to hard work.

However, Urgent work may not always be very important, but they seem to be very critical. By doing and finishing the most critical task of the day, we feel energetic and our brain continuously feels very active.

However, setting our priorities before working is a conventional method of time management. In this modern era, we should implement Covey’s Time Management Matrix

According to Covey, each task can be broken down according to its urgency and importance. All in all, we have 4 categories of tasks.

Quadrant 1: Important and Urgent - Necessity

To avoid serious consequences in future, in this quadrant we have to deal with the unforeseen events and pressing problems, immediately. Most of the time, some issues are unexpected and hence proper planning may not happen. Therefore, sometimes, it’s just enough to work on them proactively— before they have become urgent.

Quadrant 2: Important but Not Urgent - Extraordinary Productivity

Tasks in this quadrant are not that urgent. We can keep them aside for some time, but this is a mistake.  Ideally, this is the quadrant where one should spend most of one’s time- working on strategic and high-impact tasks. They will bring more value to your studies, work or business. This is one way to help grow professionally and personally.

Quadrant 3: Not Important but Urgent - Distraction

Since we have to constantly keep ourselves busy, in this quadrant we have to deal with the less urgent tasks. They might distract an individual from the main goals, but as Dwight Eisenhower puts it, ‘What is urgent is seldom important.

There are times when we can avoid these petty issues entirely, but the burden automatically reduces if this task gets delegated to someone else in the team or in class. If the delegation of this assignment is not possible then the same task can be completed by including small batches. The better the job, the more hours can be allocated for particular tasks thereby making the work easy.

Quadrant 4: Not Important and Not Urgent - Waste

These tasks are neither important nor urgent. Small amounts of trivial activities help us relax. Yet we tend to waste a lot of time in this quadrant, so it is always advised to be careful because we may be losing the present moment.

Therefore, time management skills and following these quadrants during studies or at the workplace becomes essential to handle every project with diligence in future. In other words, as Lord Chesterfield had mentioned, “Take care of the minutes and the hours will take care of themselves.”

How to Make the Most of Your Time

You must examine a few factors that will assist us throughout our life in order to make the most of our time. Setting objectives, establishing to-do lists, prioritizing work, getting adequate sleep, and so on are all examples of this.

Set long-term and short-term goals to help you stay productive while striving to maximize your time. Furthermore, they will act as a motivator to keep you going. This will also motivate you to accomplish something in your life.

At first, it will appear to be a tedious task, but as you perform it on a regular basis, you will discover that it only serves to increase your productivity. As a result, you will be compelled to achieve more in life in the end.

Prioritizing tasks is an excellent way to keep track of your time. As a result, you will have a better understanding of the importance of various tasks and jobs. Aside from that, you will be more productive if you join a group and participate in a similar activity at the same time. As a consequence, it will help you achieve greater life success.

Being productive does not mean that you are always working on a variety of projects. Getting proper sleep and exercising are also important parts of being productive. Furthermore, regular exercise and sleep aid in the maintenance of a good body-mind balance, which is essential for productivity and efficiency.

In life, the most valuable asset is time. Everyone must appreciate and understand the importance of time since time can create both positive and bad outcomes. Understanding Time Management

Hello, and welcome to my article on time management! In this section, I’ll be discussing what time management is and why it’s so important in both our personal and professional lives.

Time management is the process of planning and organizing how much time you spend on various activities. This includes setting goals, prioritizing tasks, scheduling appointments, and making sure you have enough time to relax and unwind.

Effective time management is crucial because it allows us to make the most of our time. When we manage our time well, we’re able to get more done in less time, which means we have more time to focus on other things we enjoy. Additionally, time management helps minimize stress and increase overall productivity, leading to greater success both at work and in our personal lives.

Developing Time Management Skills

Effective time management is essential for achieving success in both personal and professional life. To develop strong time management skills, I recommend the following:

  • Set goals: Clearly define your short-term and long-term goals to ensure that your time is spent on tasks that align with these objectives. Creating a list of priorities will help you prioritize tasks and track progress.
  • Create a schedule: Map out your day and week, allocating time to specific tasks. This helps you stay on track and ensures that you have enough time to complete important tasks.

  • Take breaks: Taking short breaks throughout the day can increase productivity and prevent burnout. Go for a walk, practice meditation, or simply step away from your workspace for a few minutes.
  • Use time-saving tools: Automation tools can help streamline repetitive tasks and save time. For example, you can use tools like Grammarly to check your writing, or calendar apps to schedule meetings and appointments.

By implementing these strategies, you can boost your productivity and achieve more success in every aspect of your life.

Strategies for Effective Time Management

Strategies for Effective Time Management

As a professional copywriting journalist, I know that effective time management is essential for achieving productivity and success. But knowing how to manage your time efficiently can be a challenge. Here are some strategies that have worked for me:

1. Prioritize Tasks

One of the most important steps you can take to manage your time effectively is to prioritize your tasks. Make a to-do list at the beginning of each day and rank tasks in order of importance. Focus on completing the most critical tasks first and work your way down the list.

2. Eliminate Distractions

Distractions can be a major time-waster. Try to eliminate distractions as much as possible. Turn off your phone or put it on silent mode, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and find a quiet work environment. If you work in a noisy environment, consider using noise-cancelling headphones to help you focus.

3. Use Time-Saving Tools

There are many tools available to help you manage your time more efficiently. One example is time-tracking software, which allows you to monitor where you are spending your time and identify areas where you can improve. Other tools like calendar apps and project management software can help you stay organized and prioritize tasks.

4. Practice Time-Blocking

Time-blocking involves breaking your day into specific time blocks and allocating tasks to each block. For example, you might block off time for email and social media in the morning, then devote the afternoon to completing a specific project. This technique helps you stay on track and avoid procrastination.

5. Learn to Say “No”

One of the biggest time-management challenges is taking on too many tasks. Learn to say “no” to requests that are not essential or do not align with your goals. This will help you avoid overcommitting and ensure you have enough time for your top priorities.

By implementing these strategies, you can improve your time management skills and achieve greater productivity and success.

Effective Time Management Techniques

Balancing Work and Personal Life with Time Management

As a journalist balancing a demanding career and personal life, I understand the importance of effective time management in achieving a healthy work-life balance. It can be challenging to juggle multiple responsibilities, but with the right time management strategies, it’s possible to find harmony between work and personal commitments.

By implementing these tips, it’s possible to achieve a work-life balance that promotes overall success and well-being. Remember, effective time management isn’t about working more, it’s about working smarter and prioritizing what’s important.

Overcoming Time Management Challenges

As a professional copywriting journalist, I understand the challenges that come with managing time effectively. The constant distractions and interruptions can make it difficult to stay focused and productive. However, there are strategies you can implement to overcome these challenges and improve your time management skills.

Procrastination

One of the most common time management challenges is procrastination. It’s easy to put off tasks until the last minute, but this only leads to increased stress and reduced productivity. One way to overcome procrastination is to break down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Set deadlines for each step and hold yourself accountable. Additionally, try to eliminate any distractions that might be tempting you to procrastinate, such as your phone or social media.

Lack of Motivation

Another challenge is a lack of motivation . When you don’t feel motivated to complete a task, it can be hard to find the energy to get started. One technique for overcoming this challenge is to focus on the benefits of completing the task. For example, remind yourself of how good it will feel to cross the item off your to-do list. Additionally, try to find ways to make the task more enjoyable, such as listening to music or working in a comfortable environment.

Interruptions

Interruptions are another challenge that can disrupt your time management efforts. Whether it’s a co-worker popping into your office or the constant ping of incoming emails, interruptions can make it difficult to stay focused and productive. One way to overcome this challenge is to establish boundaries. Let your co-workers know when you are working on an important task and cannot be interrupted. Additionally, consider turning off notifications on your phone and computer to limit distractions.

By implementing these strategies, you can overcome common time management challenges and improve your productivity. Remember, effective time management takes practice and commitment, but the benefits are well worth the effort.

Creating a Time Management Plan

Time Management Techniques for Students

As a student, managing your time effectively can make the difference between academic success and failure. Here are some time management techniques that can help you maximize your productivity and achieve better results:

  • Create a schedule: Planning your day in advance helps you stay on top of your schoolwork and other activities. Allocate blocks of time for studying, attending classes, and completing assignments.
  • Use productivity apps: There are many apps available that can help you organize your tasks and stay focused. Some popular choices include Trello, Evernote, and Focus@Will.
  • Practice time-blocking: This involves breaking your day down into segments and dedicating each one to a specific task. For example, you could dedicate one hour to studying for a particular subject.
  • Optimize study time: When studying, it’s important to make the most of your time. Avoid distractions by studying in a quiet place, and take regular breaks to avoid burnout.
  • Manage extracurricular activities: It’s important to balance your schoolwork with other activities. Prioritize your commitments and avoid overcommitting yourself.

By implementing these time management techniques, you can reduce stress, stay organized, and achieve your academic goals.

Benefits of Effective Time Management

When we understand the value of time, we’re more likely to use it wisely. We’ll be more likely to spend time on things that are truly important to us, and less likely to waste time on things that don’t matter. We’ll also be more aware of the passage of time, and cherish the moments we have with loved ones all the more.

Advantages of Time Management

Time management can also help you to reduce stress. This is because when you feel like you have a handle on your time, it can be easier to relax and not feel like everything is out of control. Additionally, if you know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done, it can be easier to avoid procrastination and the related stress that comes with it.

Finally, good time management skills can improve your overall quality of life. When you are able to accomplish more and feel less stressed, you may find that you have more energy and free time for things that you enjoy. Additionally, feeling like you are in control of your time can lead to increased feelings of satisfaction and happiness.

Strategies to Manage Time

There are a number of strategies that you can use to manage your time more effectively. Below are some tips that may be useful for you:

1. Make a list of the tasks that you need to accomplish and prioritize them. This will help you focus on the most important tasks first and ensure that you do not forget anything.

2. Take breaks in between tasks so that you do not get overwhelmed or burnt out. This will help you stay focused and refreshed so that you can work more efficiently.

3. Set aside specific times for each task and stick to it. This will help you better manage your time as you will know exactly how long you have for each task.

4. Delegate tasks to others if possible. This can be helpful if there are certain tasks that someone else can do just as well or even better than you.

5. Learn to say no to requests that may take up too much of your time. It is important to know your limits so that you can focus on what is truly important to you .

6. Avoid procrastination by getting started on tasks as soon as possible. This will help you stay ahead of your workload and reduce stress.

7. Find ways to simplify or automate certain tasks if possible to save time. This will help you focus on more important tasks and be more productive.

Tips for Effective Time Management

1. Start by creating a to-do list for the upcoming week. This will help you stay organized and on track.

2. Make sure to schedule in time for breaks and leisure activities. This will help you avoid burnout and stay fresh.

3. try to batch similar tasks together to save time. For example, if you need to make phone calls, do all of them at once instead of spreading them out throughout the day.

4. Delegate or outsource tasks whenever possible. This will free up your time so that you can focus on more important things.

5. Finally, be flexible with your time management plans. Things will inevitably come up that will throw off your schedule. Roll with the punches and don’t beat yourself up if things don’t go perfectly according to plan.

Disadvantages of Poor Time Management

There are many disadvantages of poor time management. Poor time management can lead to missed deadlines, lower grades, and even getting fired from a job. It can also lead to stress and anxiety. People who are bad at managing their time often underestimate how long it will take to complete tasks and overestimate how much they can do in a day. This can lead to procrastination and poor planning which can lead to missed deadlines or other consequences. Additionally, people with poor time management skills may have difficulty multi-tasking or prioritizing tasks, leading to even more problems. Poor time management can also lead to a lack of productivity, resulting in fewer accomplishments and a feeling of dissatisfaction with one’s progress. Finally, poor time management can negatively affect relationships both at work and at home as others become frustrated with someone who is always late or doesn’t meet deadlines.

Time management is an important life skill that can help you to get more done in less time and also increase your overall satisfaction with life. By planning ahead, setting priorities, and taking breaks when needed, you can maximize the hours of each day for maximum productivity. Taking a few minutes every day to reflect on what you have achieved and where you need to improve will go a long way towards helping you stay organized and reach your goals. With practice and consistency, time management becomes second nature – allowing you to make the most out of every minute!

Time management

Contributed by: Kaitie Christensen and Nathan Lachner

Working backwards to reach your goal

An essay should express continued thought and/or research on a particular subject. It is harder to collect and research information when it is all done at the last minute. Time management is integral to academic writing, especially with longer essays. Utilize these tips to make the writing process as smooth as possible.

Assess the work that needs to be done

  • The page or word count
  • Expectations such as audience and research
  • Think about all of the stages of writing: research, drafting, writing, and revision.
  • Think about how much time you would need to comfortably complete each step. How long will it take you to research? How long will it take you to draft? How long will it take you to write and revise?

Plan your execution

  • Determine a steady pace for your execution of the essay
  • Time until the deadline

Consider time for revision

  • Don’t plan to finish on the day of the deadline. It is ideal to finish the writing at least one day in advance to read over the essay and check for mistakes or possible revisions.
  • If you plan your essay accordingly, the process will be less painful. You will be able to submit your essay on time.

Once you familiarize yourself with the assignment, you can work backwards from your due date to create a plan. This may feel overwhelming at first, but taking it a step at a time can help you feel confident and in control.

Backplanning

Backplanning emphasizes working backwards from the day the assignment is due to the first day you begin in order to work through all the steps of the writing assignment. Know your own preferences and set a schedule for yourself so that the writing process can be as smooth and productive as possible.  The stages below may give you an idea for how to begin breaking up the steps of the assignment.

  • Explore ideas
  • Brainstorm using an objective such as a research question as guidance
  • Write down all the thoughts
  • Cluster ideas and thoughts by similarities and how they relate to each other
  • Easier to write a thesis statement once you have a solid idea of the topics your paper will discuss!
  • It’s okay to leave blank spaces where you intend to come back and revise
  • Helps to finalize the organization, structure, and flow of ideas, and to identify places that needs more analysis or research

You can do this step by yourself, with a friend, or with a consultant at the Writing & Speaking Center!

  • Take time to fill in any blanks or remaining questions
  • Read the paper over for purpose and comparing it to the prompt
  • Check the strength of the thesis, organization, and evidence
  • Smooth out anything that sounds awkward or rough
  • Fix small mistakes like citations and formatting

You may choose to have a break between editing and re-reading in order to clear your mind after you have walked away.

  • Give your assignment one last read before submitting.

You may choose to complete one step of the writing process per day, break your paper up into pieces or allot time for feedback (such as the Writing & Speaking Center). Whatever you choose to do, pace yourself and remember to schedule breaks such as weekends to give yourself a chance to walk away from the assignment and to relax!

Time Management

Time management refers to the process of organizing and planning how to allocate one’s time between specific activities. It is about maximizing the effectiveness of our time to increase productivity, efficiency, and to strike a balance between various life aspects. Good time management enables individuals to accomplish more in a shorter period, reduces stress, and leads to career success.

In the context of an essay writing competition, effective time management allows for thorough research, thoughtful writing, and ample revision, all within set deadlines.

  • Define Long-Term Goals : Identify what you want to achieve academically, such as excelling in a subject or winning an essay competition.
  • Establish Short-Term Objectives : Break down your long-term goals into manageable, short-term tasks and milestones.
  • Identify Urgent vs. Important Tasks : Use tools like the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks based on their urgency and importance.

  • Creating a Schedule : A well-organized schedule, whether it’s daily, weekly, or monthly, can greatly improve time management. Tools like planners, calendars, and digital apps can assist in this regard.
  • Prioritization : Understanding the importance and urgency of tasks is crucial. Techniques like the Eisenhower Box can help in categorizing and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Avoiding Procrastination : Procrastination is the arch-nemesis of time management. Overcoming this through motivation, setting deadlines, and understanding the reasons behind procrastination is key.
  • Taking Breaks : Regular breaks enhance overall productivity and focus. The Pomodoro Technique is a popular method, involving 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break.

Applying Time Management in Essay Writing

When participating in an essay competition, time management becomes a crucial skill. Start by allocating time for research, drafting, writing, and editing. Ensure that each phase of essay writing is given adequate time. Use tools like timers to maintain focus during writing sessions and schedule breaks to avoid burnout.

In conclusion, mastering time management is a valuable life skill that benefits various aspects of life, particularly in an academic setting. For students entering essay competitions, it is a tool that enables not just the timely completion of essays but also enhances the quality of writing. Effective time management leads to a more organized, stress-free approach to academic challenges, paving the way for success in competitions and future endeavors.

How education leaders can teach time management to high school students.

High school is no joke these days. A whirlwind of responsibilities—including homework, extracurricular activities and even a job—can leave many teenagers feeling overwhelmed or disorganized. In the middle of all this, one key skill that can separate the students merely surviving from those thriving is time management.

I believe developing organization and solid time management skills should be a priority from day one of high school. Why? These skills can help students now and continue serving them for decades to come. In the professional world, the ability to juggle multiple tasks, meet deadlines and effectively prioritize is crucial. Employees who struggle with time management and disorganization can quickly become overwhelmed, make careless mistakes and fail to achieve their goals. However, those who have honed skills like calendar and to-do list management, as well as focused work habits, can operate with efficiency and poise under pressure.

Too often, I've found people assume time management is just a given skill that someone will pick up on their own. But just like math, science and other academic abilities, I believe organizational skills must be explicitly taught, modeled and reinforced. Leaving it up to chance could result in some students slipping through the cracks.

As someone who has created a productivity and community-building tool for schools, I've witnessed firsthand how transformative strong time management skills can be, especially when developed early. So, how can education leaders and teachers start instilling these skills early on?

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

Godzilla minus one is coming to netflix this weekend but there s a catch, some very bad news about deadpool and wolverine, 1. make it a priority..

Consider making time management and organization a core part of what students learn, not just an occasional motivational chat. One suggestion is to build dedicated lessons, workshops and real practice into required classes across grade levels. Treat it as an academic skill instead of an afterthought.

2. Provide structured tools.

Go beyond simply preaching the importance of planners and to-do lists. Offer specific systems and strategies teens can use, such as calendar apps, task managers, note-taking methods, etc. The more structured, the better. If schools opt to provide organizational tools and apps, ensure all students have access to accounts and subscriptions.

3. Get other educators on board.

Too often, I've found poor time management gets written off as laziness. Recognize that organization is a skill that requires teaching, modeling and coaching. From my own experiences working with educators, I've found professional development is key to getting teachers on board with treating time management as a learnable skill rather than an inherent trait.

Host training sessions where you explore the research and science behind productivity as a skillset; I've seen this make a big difference. I also suggest highlighting real student success stories. Hearing firsthand how developing these abilities impacted students' self-confidence, grades and overall well-being can illustrate the benefits to teachers.

4. Lead by example.

Having teachers model time management strategies themselves and make their processes transparent to students can be effective. For example, in my company, we have a recurring "Productivity Power Hour," where I record a video narrating how I prioritize my own tasks and schedule for the week, and then I share it with my team. For educators, something similar could be highly impactful. Share your own carefully planned weekly calendar or a video walkthrough of how you timeline all upcoming assignments and tasks.

5. Incentivize students.

I believe our culture too often praises the relentless all-nighter as a badge of honor. Instead, celebrate and incentivize the students who exemplify focused efficiency, routines and work-life balance. Schools can offer awards or certain privileges to recognize and reward students displaying exceptional time management and organizational abilities. Even low-cost incentives like being able to leave class five minutes early could help motivate students.

Time management is key in academic and professional settings.

Effective time management can help students allocate adequate time to study, which could lead to a better understanding of concepts and higher grades. With better organization and prioritization, students can also learn how to manage their workloads more efficiently and carve out time for extracurricular activities, hobbies and personal interests, leading to a more balanced lifestyle. These skills can ultimately better prepare them for the future. Mastering time management in high school sets students up for success in college, their careers and beyond, where similar skills are essential for thriving in a fast-paced world.

As a result of teaching time management, schools might also see improvements in student performance . Furthermore, focusing on these skills can foster a culture of accountability, responsibility and achievement among students, thus contributing to a positive learning environment.

In conclusion, time management isn't just a skill; it's a cornerstone of success. By integrating it into the curriculum and fostering a culture that celebrates efficiency, educators can equip students with the tools they need to thrive in high school and beyond.

Donald Trump’s Hush-Money Trial Is a Referendum on Truth

T he closing arguments for Donald Trump’s hush-money trial have ended and a jury now decides Trump’s fate in a Manhattan courtroom. But in many ways, it is truth itself that is on trial.

For the past several weeks, jurors have heard arguments regarding Trump’s alleged attempt to disinform Americans and sway the 2016 presidential election by falsifying business records and concealing hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Depending on your view of Trump, the trial is either a much-awaited moment of accountability or a politically motivated case of prosecutorial overreach. But the case represents something more than the guilt or innocence of the former president—it is a referendum on whether facts and law still matter. Depending on which view one has of the case, the verdict likely will be seen as a commitment to the rule of law or a miscarriage of justice.

First comes the finding of facts. In our post-truth era, a jury’s quest for the facts may seem like a quaint notion. Yet every day in courtrooms across America, citizens selected at random gather to discern facts from evidence and render verdicts. Their verdicts to hold people accountable for committing crimes is what upholds the rule of law.

Read More: 5 Things We Learned From the Trump Trial

In Trump’s case, the jury will soon deliberate on whether Trump falsified business records regarding the payment of $130,000 to Daniels, and did so with intent to conceal violations of campaign and tax laws. According to the testimony of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, the October 2016 release of a recording of Trump making disparaging comments about groping women on an open mic for the Access Hollywood television show made it imperative to prevent another disclosure about sexual impropriety before the election. Unless Trump blocked Americans from learning about his alleged act of adultery, Cohen testified, Trump believed his campaign would suffer a “ total disaster .”  In addition, David Pecker , former publisher of the National Enquirer, testified at trial that in August 2016, shortly after Trump became the GOP nominee for president, he paid $150,000 to silence former Playboy model Karen McDougal regarding a extra-marital relationship with Trump.

Some critics of the case argue that there is nothing illegal about paying hush money, and that charges would not have been filed at all if the defendant’s name were anything other than Donald Trump. Testimony during the trial has disclosed that other famous men entered agreements with AMI, the parent company of the National Enquirer, to kill stories alleging extra-marital affairs.

But that criticism misses the point. It is not the payment of hush money alone that is the crime. It is the cover-up by someone who is a candidate for president. Running for public office brings with it the responsibility of filing accurate campaign finance reports. The indictment charges that when Trump allegedly caused 34 checks, invoices, and ledger entries to be falsely characterized as legal expenses, he intended to conceal violations of state and federal campaign finance laws as well as tax laws. New York law makes it a crime to conspire to promote or prevent the election of a candidate by illegal means. Federal law prohibits corporate contributions, like the one made by AMI, and limits the amount of individual contributions to $2,700, far below the $130,000 allegedly made by Cohen. When Trump reimbursed Cohen, he allegedly falsely characterized the payments as income, resulting in the tax charge.

In addition to violating the law, the alleged scheme, if true, also betrays the trust of the American people. Voters have a right to know the facts about a candidate when casting their ballots. If candidates can covertly manipulate public perception to serve their own interests, they undermine the public’s ability to make decisions based on facts.

The jurors will decide whether the prosecution has met its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt and return a verdict. The prosecution’s case is far from perfect. Daniels and Cohen both admitted to making prior inconsistent statements. Cohen, who went to prison for perjury, even admitted to stealing money from the former president. Even if convicted, as a first-time offender, Trump is unlikely to face a prison term of any significance or be removed from the ballot as the presumptive GOP nominee for president. But the verdict will likely elicit strong opinions, even from people who did not listen to all of the evidence or review all of the exhibits, as the jury did.

This is where the rule of law will be tested. As a former prosecutor, I was trained to argue cases in court zealously, but to accept a jury’s verdict with respect, even when it was not the decision I had sought. I learned to acknowledge that reasonable minds can disagree, and that it is more important to uphold public confidence in our legal system than to obtain a conviction in any particular case. To support our legal system means that we focus on a fair process, and tolerate decisions with which we disagree. Otherwise, our criminal justice system would fall apart.

But throughout this trial, Trump and his supporters have groomed the public to distrust the fairness of the trial. Trump has called the case a “sham” and “a Biden show trial, ” even though the case was brought by a state court prosecutor outside the president’s federal chain of command. Trump has called Justice Juan Merchan “corrupt” and “highly conflicted. ” Trump even falsely claimed that the gag order entered to prevent either party from making comments outside of court about witnesses, court staff and jurors prevents him from testifying, a “misunderstanding” Justice Merchan corrected on the record, but a narrative that Trump can use to explain away a decision not to testify.

On May 14, a group of Republican members of Congress attended the trial, dressed in identical navy blue suits with white shirts and red ties. Outside the courthouse, they addressed the media, and House Speaker Mike Johnson disparaged all of the pending criminal cases against Trump. “These are politically motivated trials, and they are a disgrace,” he said. “It is election interference.” Their unity and uniforms signaled an allegiance to one man over the rule of law.

Their stunt was the latest chapter in Trump’s playbook to disparage institutions that might stand in his way. By undermining public confidence in potential critics, Trump can downplay their inevitable criticism as illegitimate. Blunting potential critics is the reason he refers to the media as “the enemy of the people” and career civil servants as “the deep state.” And now, according to Trump, any case filed to hold him accountable for alleged criminal conduct is simply “election interference.” Not only do these claims provide pretextual defenses for Trump, they also tend to reduce public confidence in the institutions of democracy.

The jury’s decision in this case will end this trial. But public opinion will render the verdict on truth and the future of our faith in the justice system.

Ready, Set, Update! Privacy Framework 1.1 + Data Governance and Management Profile Workshop

NIST is holding this hybrid public workshop to inform an update of the NIST Privacy Framework to version 1.1 and the development of a joint NIST Frameworks Data Governance and Management Profile (DGM Profile). With the release of version 2.0 of th e NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), NIST intends to make a modest update to the Privacy Framework to support realignment with the CSF. The update also provides an opportunity to ensure the Privacy Framework is still responsive to current privacy risk management needs since its release four years ago.

Additionally, stakeholders have expressed a desire for a resource to support use of NIST frameworks for privacy, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence together. With data governance being a starting point for many organizations, NIST has determined to develop the DGM Profile as a way to demonstrate how the NIST Privacy Framework Version 1.0 , the NIST AI Risk Management Framework , and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) Version 2.0 can be used together. The workshop aims to gather input to ensure Privacy Framework 1.1 and the DGM Profile effectively address stakeholder needs.

The opening plenary will feature expert panels that explore organizational data governance and management approaches and challenges as well as insights for updating the NIST Privacy Framework.  Following the plenary, participants will have the opportunity to provide their feedback and perspectives during dedicated breakout sessions for the Privacy Framework 1.1 update and the DGM Profile. Stakeholder input in the workshop will help inform initial public drafts of the Privacy Framework 1.1 and the DGM Profile.

Workshop Inputs:  Concept papers for the Privacy Framework 1.1 update and the DGM Profile will be posted in advance of the workshop.

Expected Workshop Outputs:  NIST will publish a workshop summary. Stakeholder feedback provided during the workshop will be used to inform initial public drafts of Privacy Framework 1.1 and the DGM Profile.

CPE credits:  The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) has approved up to 7 CPE credits for attending this workshop. To request credits from IAPP, please see this  form .
