We‘ve all been there....you are working late into the night trying to finish a paper, but the figures won‘t go where you want them to and the references for your bibliography are getting mixed up....and the footnotes...don‘t even get me started! Thanks, Microsoft Word!

But what if there was another way? Maybe there is: LaTeX .

So what is LaTeX and why should you use it to write your dissertation?

LaTeX is document preparation typesetting system that uses plain text input in order to create an attractive end product. This software has been in use in academia for decades and improvements are continuously made. It is especially useful for formatting large documents such as books, scientific articles or an academic thesis. LaTeX makes it easy to include references, figures with captions, nice looking tables and equations, and can save you some stress when writing your dissertation in addition to making your thesis stand out for its fabulous formatting!

By the end of the workshop, you will:

• Have a clearer sense of how to use LaTeX and for what purposes
• Get comfortable with the LaTeX programming environment
• Learn how to include figures, references, equations, cross-references, table of contents, title pages, etc.
• Have a clearer sense of the advantages and disadvantages of LaTeX
• Create a plan of action to organize your written dissertation with LaTeX

In this course, we will be using Overleaf, a free web-based LaTeX editor to demonstrate the functionality of LaTeX and in the end we will create a personalized template that you can use for your thesis! The course wil be taught in English, but if you are writing in German, this is not a problem. The same principles apply and questions can be asked in German or English.

Formatting and structure

The Cornell Graduate School has become increasingly flexible about the formatting of theses and dissertations.  There now are only seven core requirements . For the structure of theses and dissertations here is a list of required and recommended sections .

Latex template

Among the available thesis and dissertation templates provided by the Graduate School is also a LaTeX template (ZIP archive). This template has been uploaded to Overleaf and placed in the Cornell template directory . This template contains a small fix to avoid an error message about \ifpdf .

LaTeX/ Eine Titelseite erstellen

Es gibt viele Situationen, in denen der Wunsch besteht, eine Titelseite mit einem benutzerdefinierten Format zu erstellen, anstatt das native Format zu verwenden, das von LaTeX bereitgestellt wird. Für kurze Texte, wie einfache Artikel, genügt meistens die Ausgabe, die von \maketitle erzeugt wird, für längere Texte (wie Bücher oder Berichte) werden jedoch häufig anspruchsvollere Formatierungen benötigt. Obwohl es möglich ist, die vom \maketitle -Befehl generierte Ausgabe zu verändern, kann dies selbst für einfache Änderungen am Titel kompliziert sein. In solchen Fällen ist es in der Regel einfacher, die Titelseite direkt selber zu erzeugen. In diesem Kapitel wird gezeigt, wie dies möglich ist.

Standard-Titelseiten [ Bearbeiten ]

Viele Dokumenten-Klassen bieten die Möglichkeit, eine Titelseite zu erstellen. Im top matter kann man den Inhalt dieser Titelseite bestimmen:

Will man erreichen, dass sich auf der Titelseite ein Datum befindet, so verwendet man den Befehl \date{} . Definiert man das Datum nicht, so wird automatisch das Datum von \today verwendet.

Um die Titelseite zu erzeugen, benutzt man folgenden Befehl:

Es ist wichtig, dass man den Inhalt der Titelseite zuerst festlegt, bevor man diesen mit \maketitle erzeugt. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Dokumentenklassen erzeugt die article Klasse keine eigene Titelseite. Der Titelblock befindet sich hierbei auf der ersten Seite. Man beachte aber, dass die abstract -Umgebung in AMS-Dokumenten vor dem \maketitle -Befehl geladen werden sollte.

Fußnoten innerhalb der Titelseite können mit dem Befehl \thanks spezifiziert werden. Beispiel:

Der \thanks -Befehl kann neben dem hier verwendeten \author ebenfalls im \title verwendet werden.

Es ist abhängig von der Dokumentenklasse, welche Befehle in der Titelseite, die von \maketitle generiert wird, verwendet werden können. Die Dokumentation der Klasse liefert zuverlässige Informationen.

Ein kurzer Abriss über die Möglichkeiten von KOMA-Script zur Erzeugung automatischer Artikel, sowie das auch folgend erklärte manuelle Erzeugen von Titelseiten wird im TeX-Beispiel des Monats Februar 2016 gezeigt. [1]

Der Titel für Zeitschriftenartikel (journal submissions) [ Bearbeiten ]

Zeitschriften folgen einem speziellen Layout. Um dies zu gewährleisten, bieten sie oft Vorlagen (templates) an, welche das Layout definieren. Was für den Titel zur Verfügung steht (Emails, Institutsnamen, Stichworte etc.) hängt von der Vorlage ab und unterscheidet sich stark von Zeitschrift zu Zeitschrift. Ist eine Vorlage gegeben, sollte man sich an diese halten. Ist keine vorhanden, so sollte man auf die Grundkonzepte, wie oben beschrieben, zurückgreifen.

Erstellen einer eigenen Titelseite für einen Report oder ein Buch [ Bearbeiten ]

Normalerweise liegt der Vorteil der Verwendung von LaTex darin begründet, dass es einen von allem Ballast wie Textausrichtung, Randabständen und anderen auf den Textsatz bezogenen Maßnahmen befreit. Somit kann man sich in der Regel vollends auf den Inhalt konzentrieren und muss sich nur am Rande mit der Optik des erstellten Dokuments beschäftigen.

Möchte man jedoch sein eigenes Titel-Layout erstellen, so bietet LaTex allein dabei keine große Unterstützung. Bei diesem Prozess muss man sich um alle Textsatz-Einstellungen selbst bemühen. Es kann dabei durchaus schwierig sein, ein ansprechendes Layout zu erstellen, da LaTex nicht mit Blick auf interaktive Layout-Anpassungen entwickelt wurde. Generell ist das Verfahren jedoch ähnlich wie bei der Verwendung von reinem HTML-Code. Mit dem wichtigen Unterschied, dass das Dokument nach jeder Veränderung des Layouts kompiliert werden muss, bevor man das Ergebnis in Augenschein nehmen kann.

Was nun zunächst wie ein großer Nachteil erscheint, kann auch ein Vorteil der Verwendung von LaTex sein. Sobald einmal ein angepasstes Titelformat erstellt wurde, kann dieses ohne zusätzliche Arbeit am Layout in vielen weiteren Dokumenten erneut Verwendung finden.

Um eine perfekte Titelseite zu erhalten, ist grundsätzliches Wissen über LaTeX notwendig. Semantische Befehle werden meist nicht benutzt, alles ist Handarbeit. Es folgen die am häufigsten benötigten Dinge.

Hat man einen Textblock, so sollte man \par vor der schließenden Klammer nicht vergessen.

Text nach diesem Befehl wird an das Ende der Seite gespült.

Ein Beispiel [ Bearbeiten ]

Die obigen Tipps sind eventuell ein wenig verwirrend und zu theoretisch formuliert. Hier ist ein kleines kompilierbares Beispiel. Das Bild wird durch das Paket mwe bereitgestellt und sollte in jeder LaTeX-Installation verfügbar sein.

Der Code sieht nicht so sauber und ordentlich aus wie normaler LaTeX code, da man sich um das komplette Aussehen selbst kümmern muss. Verwendet man andere Schriften, wird es noch komplizierter. Allerdings geschieht dies nur im Titel und dieser ist in einer eigenen Datei abgeschirmt vom restlichen Dokument.

Integration der Titelseite [ Bearbeiten ]

Titelseiten für Abschlussarbeiten zum Erhalt eines akademischen Grades sind relativ statisch, sie ändern sich mit der Zeit des Projektes kaum oder gar nicht. Man kann die Titelseite als eigenständiges Dokument erzeugen und später in das tatsächliche Dokument einfügen. Das ist besonders nützlich, wenn die Titelseite vollkommen andere Ränder benötigt.

Wurde die Titelseite als eigenständiges Dokument generiert, angenommen die Datei heißt reportTitlepage2016.pdf, kann dieses leicht eingebunden werden:

Pakete für Titelseiten [ Bearbeiten ]

Paket titling [2] ermöglicht die Kontrolle über das mit \maketitle gesetzte Layout des Titles. Es ist nützlich für kleinere Änderungen im Vergleich zum Standard. Für italienische Benutzer ist insbesondere das frontespizio besonders geeignet.

Paket authblk [3] bietet Möglichkeiten die Autoren zu setzen. Die ist besonders für Zeitschriftenartikel ohne spezielle Vorlage hilfreich.

How to Write a Thesis in LaTeX (Part 1): Basic Structure

This five-part series of articles uses a combination of video and textual descriptions to teach the basics of writing a thesis using LaTeX. These tutorials were first published on the original ShareLateX blog site during August 2013; consequently, today's editor interface (Overleaf) has changed considerably due to the development of ShareLaTeX and the subsequent merger of ShareLaTeX and Overleaf. However, much of the content is still relevant and teaches you some basic LaTeX—skills and expertise that will apply across all platforms.

Your thesis could be the longest and most complicated document you'll ever write, which is why it's such a good idea to use L a T e X instead of a common word processor. L a T e X makes tasks that are difficult and awkward in word processors, far simpler.

When writing something like a thesis its worth splitting up the document into multiple .tex files. It's also wise to organise the project using folders; therefore, we'll create two new folders, one for all the images used in the project and one for all the .tex files making up the main body of the thesis.

The preamble

In this example, the main.tex file is the root document and is the .tex file that will draw the whole document together. The first thing we need to choose is a document class. The article class isn't designed for writing long documents (such as a thesis) so we'll choose the report class, but we could also choose the book class.

We can also change the font size by adding square brackets into the \documentclass command and specifying the size—we'll choose 12pt. Let's also prepare the document for images by loading the graphicx package. We'll also need to tell L a T e X where to look for the images using the \graphicspath command, as we're storing them in a separate folder.

The start of our preamble now looks like this:

Now we can finish off the preamble by filling in the title, author and date information. To create the simplest title page we can add the thesis title, institution name and institution logo all into the \title command; for example:

This isn't the best way to alter the title page so we'll look at more elaborate ways of customising title pages later on in the series, but this will suffice for now.

This is what the \maketitle command now produces for us:

The frontmatter

After the title page we need to add in an abstract, dedication, declaration and acknowledgements section. We can add each of these in on separate pages using unnumbered chapters. To do this we use the \chapter command and add an asterisk. After these sections we'll add a table of contents using the \tableofcontents command:

The main body

Now for the main body of the document. In this example we will add-in five chapters, one of which will be an introduction and another will be a conclusion. However, instead of just composing these chapters in the main .tex file, we'll create a separate .tex file for each chapter in the chapters folder. We can then fill in these chapters with text remembering to split them up into sections and subsections.

Then to add these chapters into the document, we use the \input command in the root document. Remember to add in chapters/ before the file name so that L a T e X knows where to find it.

The endmatter

We will now add in an appendix at the end of the document. To do this we use the \appendix command to tell L a T e X that what follows are appendices. Again We'll write the appendix in a separate file and then input it.

If we now compile the document, all our chapters will be added to the document and the table of contents will be automatically generated.

Now we have a basic structure for a thesis set up. In the next post I will show you how to change the page layout and add headers.
