Is Udemy Accredited? + Should I Put Udemy Certificates On My Resume?

After writing several posts about Udemy, one of the most common questions I get asked about is “is Udemy accredited?”.

Because of this, I decided to write this post and once and for all settle this question while also shedding some light on some interesting nuances about accreditation.

Also in this post, I will be covering other aspects of this question such as if Udemy certificates are worth putting on a resume. Let’s get started!

Is Udemy Accredited?

According to Udemy.com, “Udemy is not an accredited institution, and as a result, the certificates cannot be used for formal accreditation.” However, some individual courses do provide CPD or CEU credits that are available upon request from third-party education providers.

So in short, Udemy themselves is not an accredited institution and none of their supplied certificates carry any weight or accreditation.

Unfortunately, this is the case as Udemy has over 100,000 courses on a wide range of topics made by independent teachers with varying knowledge, expertise, credentials, and education. When combining these factors, it would be impossible to accredit each course due to time commitment and cost.

However… Some Udemy Courses Can Get Accreditation

After doing a bit more digging, I actually did find some of the courses on Udemy are actually available for accreditation. Let me explain…

When you do a search for “accreditation” on Udemy, you will get various search results in such topics as life coaching, mindfulness, meditation, CBT, EFT, energy healing, nutrition, and NLP to name a few.

Upon reading more into these types of courses, the teachers/academy also provide their own accredited certificates on top of the existing Udemy certificates.

However, in almost every case, the student themselves have to apply to platforms like the Continuing Professional Development Standards Agency to validate the certificate.

Once an agency recognizes your prior learning, it will distribute the learning credits which will make the non-Udemy certificate accredited from that agency.

While this is a great alternative, one thing to keep in mind that this is only available for certain topics on Udemy which typically have a wide range of standards of accreditations.

Should I Put Udemy Certificates On My Resume

Ok, so you now know that Udemy isn’t accredited and you still want to undertake one of their certificate courses. Now it begs the questions of whether or not you should add a certificate to your resume/CV or to a job position.

From my own personal experience and opinion, I think it is definitely worthwhile adding the completed Udemy course to your resume. Here are the three reasons why I think this is a good thing todo.

• It shows the potential employer that you have gone the extra mile to learn the topic
• It shows that you are committed to the topic and have the discipline to complete the course
• A completed certificate can give you the edge in a wide range of candidates

Can You Get a Job With a Udemy Certificate?

As a continuation of the above question, is it possible to get a job when completing a Udemy course? In short, yes and no.

At its core, Udemy is there to enable you to learn the skills that will enable you to bring value to a company or business. So if you are to commit 100% and undertake various courses, understand the subject matter, and put it into action that gives results. Then yes, Udemy courses can be extremely beneficial to landing that next job.

However, if you are to complete a Udemy course while not concentrating, taking notes, researching further, and becoming competent in a certain topic. Then it is unlikely that you will be able to stand out in an interview.

What Are The Benefits Of Udemy Certificates?

When it comes to the benefits of completing a Udemy course and getting a certificate, you are essentially showing an employer that you are dedicated to improving and updating your skills.

This is particularly helpful if you have picked specific courses that share new skills on the topic, give a refresher, prepare you for an exam, or give you a specialized skill in a technical industry.

So while a certificate of completion is a great accomplishment, the symbolism behind it can sometimes mean more than the piece of paper itself.

In conclusion, Udemy.com is not an accredited online course provider and does not provide any accreditation for any of their certificates. However, with dedicated studying, focus, commitment, and discipline, Udemy courses can be beneficial in various job positions.

So, I believe Udemy courses are worth it for getting a job. Although some employers don’t consider Udemy courses, others do pay attention to these courses. Udemy courses can increase your chances of landing a job if you add them correctly to your resume . At the same time, if the interviewer asks you relevant questions, you must answer them accurately.

Research shows that employers have started to realize the significance of additional skills. For example, if you are a computer programmer learning cloud computing skills through the Udemy website will benefit you.

Should you put Udemy courses on your resume?

While some people discourage job seekers from including Udemy courses on their resumes, I encourage everyone to add them to their job applications. There are numerous benefits of completing Udemy courses, such as:

• You believe in self-motivation and make efforts to learn new skills
• Attract more recruiters through LinkedIn profile
• It shows that you can set goals and make efforts to achieve them

Although Udemy courses can’t solely help you get a job, they play a crucial role in the hiring process. I believe employers today focus on your skills rather than education. So, completing Udemy courses is all about improving your skills, meaning they can help increase your hiring chances.

Therefore, I recommended adding Udemy courses to your resume . These won’t harm your resume . If you want to increase your hiring chances, make sure you complete a course and acquire relevant skills . For instance, graphic designers position can learn relevant skills, such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop , logo designing, etc.

Research the company and get information about the job. If the interview date is two to three weeks from now, subscribe to a relevant course on your resume . Some courses on Udemy are less than a week. So, it is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills and enhance your resume or job application.

Yes, you must do this! I believe there is nothing wrong with Udemy courses. Don’t worry about whether the online platform has an accredited status; focus on learning new skills . Even if you don’t get the job, these courses can provide you with a wide range of opportunities in future.

The appeal of online courses is simple — they’re quick, low-commitment, and often free. But are they actually useful? And more importantly, are they ever going to help you get a job?

There are many types of certifications that belong — and don’t belong — on a resume. Obviously, significant qualifications like degrees or mandatory professional accreditations should be listed, but what about short courses you can take fully online?

Do online courses belong on your resume?

The short answer is: It depends .

The longer answer is, there are a few things you should consider when listing an online course on your resume, like:

• Is it relevant to the job you’re applying for?
• Does it demonstrate key skills?
• Is it from a reputable source?
• How senior are you?

We'll discuss when to list online courses on your resume — and when to leave them off — in more detail below. First, let's take a look at how to list online courses on your resume.

Listing online courses on your resume: A step by step guide

• Focus on relevant courses. If you've completed multiple online courses, choose 1-2 that are most relevant to the specific job you're applying for.
• Choose where to list them. Online courses can be listed in your education, certifications, projects, or other section — more on that below.
• List the name of the course.
• Include the name of the provider.
• Specify the date you completed the qualification.
• Include 1-3 accomplishments or key learnings in bullet points (optional).

Here are some examples of the most effective ways to list online courses on a resume, as used by successful job seekers and verified by recruiters.

How to put Udacity on a resume

Should you mention a Udacity degree on your resume? Udacity offers "nanodegrees" that, despite their length, are well-regarded in professional circles. Udacity have gained a reputation for offering strong courses, partnering with reputable businesses, and requiring stronger effort to pass than similar online courses, which makes them a good option for picking up a new skill.

To list a Udacity degree on your resume, you have a few options:

• List it in your education section
• Put it in a separate certifications section
• Include Udacity in your resume projects section

Putting a Udemy certificate on a resume

Unlike other online course providers, Udemy doesn't grade students or require tests to pass. That doesn't mean you can't include a Udemy completion on your resume — just make sure it adds value before you do.

Putting an eCornell certificate on a resume

If you have an online certificate from a reputable institution like Cornell, it's worth highlighting that on your resume. Be sure to specify that you hold a certificate, not a full degree — listing it in a Certifications or Additional Information section rather than your Education section can help make this clear.

A Google Data Analytics certificate on its own isn't going to be enough to convince a recruiter you have the skills they're looking for. So why include it? Because it's one piece of the puzzle — when included alongside technical skills, projects, and other relevant qualifications.

Putting a HarvardX certificate on resume

Like eCornell, HarvardX is Harvard University's online offering. The platform offers over 140 courses ranging from single subjects to full professional courses.

When to list online courses on your resume

Here are a few situations where listing an online course can be worth it:

If it’s required for the job

Anything listed in the job description should be addressed on your resume. If a specific qualification is mentioned in the job ad — either as a minimum requirement or as a ‘nice to have’ — you should list it on your resume. These must-haves are often set as filters on ATS software, which means that if you leave them off, you risk having your resume sent straight to the ‘no’ pile before it even reaches a recruiter’s desk.

If it adds credibility

Not all online courses are created equal. Certified courses are generally held in higher regard than non-certified courses, and a six-week online course from an accredited institution looks far more impressive than a four-hour Zoom workshop. You can increase the credibility of online courses by opting for a verified certificate or completing a project that puts the skills you learned into practice.

If you’re changing careers

When you’re looking to break into a new role or industry, either as a recent grad or a career changer , your education takes on an extra layer of importance.

Not only can taking an online course help you develop some of the basic skills you’ll need for the new position, but listing it on your resume is a good way to show that you have the skills required for the job and include the keywords necessary to get past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

When to leave your online course off your resume

So, when shouldn’t you list an online course on your resume? Here are some general principles to keep in mind:

Keep very short courses off your resume

On the flip side, any course that only takes a very short time to complete (less than a few days or so) usually won’t be significant enough to include on your resume. In general, aim to include no more than 1-2 certifications — listing every single workshop or conference you’ve ever attended will only waste valuable resume space and dilute the impact of any genuinely relevant certifications.

Only list relevant online courses

This is the basic litmus test for everything on your resume: Is it relevant to the specific job you’re applying for? It doesn’t matter how impressive the qualification, if it has nothing to do with the role or industry you’re targeting, it’s better to leave it off.

Experience trumps qualifications

If you're a senior-level candidate or have at 8+ years of experience in your field, it's often a good idea to leave off short online courses from your resume, unless they're clearly credited, like an Executive MBA or similar. Most hiring managers only will focus on your formal work experience on a resume when you're at the senior level, and education, extra-curricular and online courses are much less important.

Reputation matters

Avoid notoriously unreliable institutions, which can do more harm to your candidacy than good. A lot of online for-profit colleges (like the University of Phoenix) have such bad reputations that it may be worth leaving those qualifications off your resume entirely, unless you can’t avoid it.

How can I find online courses?

Want to include online courses on your resume but aren’t sure where to find them? Here are some good places to start looking:

Check the job description

This is oft-repeated advice, but that’s because the job posting itself is almost always the best place to start when building your resume. If the ad mentions a specific certification candidates should have, it may be worth your while to pursue it as an online course — that way you don't need to take time off work.

Target specific skills

If you know what skills you need to brush up on, try searching for online courses that target those areas. If you aren’t sure, use the skills and keywords tool below to find the right skills based on your desired industry or job title.

Ask your network

The best way to know what qualifications are actually useful is to ask people with experience in similar roles. Ask your existing network, search LinkedIn or alumni databases for potential contacts, and ask for informational interviews with people who can help steer you in the right direction.

Ask them if an online course in the field is worth doing, and if there are any reputable ones they recommend. People who work in the industry will be more in-the-know about the right online courses to do and which ones are respected.

Choose a legitimate provider

I’ve taken online Udemy courses on a variety of topics from photography to website optimization, and I’ve talked to friends and colleagues who have taken courses on even more topics including digital marketing, software development, and more.

I’ve asked all of them: Is Udemy worth it? And I’m going to share the results here.

Udemy is an online course website offering 130,000+ video courses taught by a variety of instructors in various fields. Topics include everything from web design to software engineering to photography and creative writing.

When you enroll in a Udemy course, you gain access to a library of pre-recorded videos that the instructor has laid out, plus any additional resources and tools.

Your instructor may include downloadable templates, worksheets, or other files/resources. In my experience, this is what sets the best courses apart, and I’ll talk more about this soon.

Overall, Udemy courses range from one to two hours of video content all the way up to 15+ hours. You can see the length of each course in the course details before enrolling.

Udemy courses are self-paced, meaning you can choose how quickly to move through the material (and you can even skip ahead to different sections/videos if you’d like).

Let’s talk about the quality of courses next, since that’s what’s most important in a Udemy review…

Quality of Courses on Udemy

The quality of Udemy courses is good overall but varies widely depending on which course and instructor you choose. Therefore, it’s important to select your Udemy courses carefully.

To help you choose a high-quality course, Udemy provides student reviews as well as tags such as, “Highest rated,” “Bestseller,” etc.

Read Udemy’s course reviews from other students before committing to a course. This is one of the best ways to ensure that you’re selecting a course that’s worth your money.

Also, make sure to take advantage of Udemy’s option to “preview this course.” Through this option, you can watch an introductory video and get a sense of the instructor and what you’ll be learning in their course. Some instructors also offer additional free sample videos before you pay, too.

Udemy Course Structure and Learning Experience

The typical courses on Udemy are well-structured, with distinct sections to help you make better sense of the information and stay organized as you work through the material.

Udemy’s platform also does a great job of tracking progress so you know where you’ve left off. Each video is marked with a blue check-mark upon completion, and you can also view your overall percentage completion for each course.

There’s also a small community aspect in some courses. Udemy instructors can choose to include a Q&A section as a part of the learning experience, where you can ask questions and read questions and answers posed by other students.

One other feature I enjoyed was the “Notes” section, where you can input notes while watching any course video.

These are some of the top features that make Udemy worth it for many of their students and differentiate the experience from free platforms like YouTube, blogs, etc.

Worksheets, Quizzes, and Real-World Projects

One course that I went through as a part of this Udemy review was The Complete Conversion Rate Optimization course , which Udemy provided to help with this review.

The course was an example of how the quality of your learning experience depends heavily on the instructor… and in this case, it was fantastic.

What made this course so great were the many PDF downloads and worksheets, real-world projects to simulate how you’d use this knowledge after finishing the course, and links to useful web resources and tools.

The content in the course I took went above and beyond just a series of videos!

And I chose this course based on student reviews, which were overwhelmingly positive. Therefore, if you’re going to take courses on Udemy, I can’t emphasize this enough: choose a course with many positive reviews and a strong overall rating.

In this particular course, the instructor also included optional quizzes, which I found to be helpful.

The extras you receive with your course will depend on the individual teacher , but many of the top courses offer at least some of these add-ons. I felt these extra pieces enhanced the experience and made Udemy worth it, especially compared to free alternatives like trying to learn everything by yourself on YouTube.

Is Udemy Worth It? Pros and Cons

Next, let’s look at the main benefits and disadvantages of taking courses on Udemy, to help you determine if the website is worth it for you.

Strengths of Udemy’s Online Courses:

• Generally high-quality video courses that are worth the cost, and often provide value equivalent to courses that cost much more on other e-learning platforms.
• Many instructors include downloads, links to relevant tools and resources, worksheets, and more, so you’re acquiring a wide range of helpful resources in addition to the video content (However, this depends on the course and instructor).
• Udemy offers frequent, deep discounts so you can often find great deals and get Udemy courses for below $15 (I’ll share more about this coming up).
• Money-back guarantee. Udemy courses can be refunded within 30 days of purchase for any reason, according to Udemy’s official website.
• Lifetime access to courses. Once you pay for a particular course, you’ll have access to that material forever.
• Student reviews help you find the best courses in any learning topic quickly and easily, and you can also see how long a course is before enrolling.

Cons and Downsides of Udemy’s Online Courses:

• Not accredited. Udemy doesn’t provide transferable credits or an accredited diploma/degree, so it’s not the best place to learn skills if you’re looking to earn transferrable credits. However, this is true of almost all online learning platforms and isn’t specific to Udemy.
• Videos are pre-recorded and not taught live, so if you’re looking for an immersive, bootcamp-style learning experience, then this isn’t the right fit for you.
• The quality of Udemy’s instructors varies. While some instructors are fantastic, others aren’t as good. Make sure to read reviews before choosing a course on Udemy!

Udemy is a legitimate, reputable e-learning platform. They’re one of the largest online course websites in the world and have been in business since 2010. Udemy also offers a money-back guarantee with all of their courses.

They currently offer 155,000+ courses and have helped tens of millions of students, according to Wikipedia , making them one of the largest platforms of their type. Rest assured that Udemy is safe, legitimate, and reliable.

Udemy Course Prices

Now you’re probably wondering, “How much do Udemy courses cost?” Udemy courses typically range from $19.99 to $129.99 USD, with some shorter, more basic courses offered for free.

You tend to get higher-quality courses with far more material if you pay rather than opting for a free course on Udemy. The typical free course I looked at on Udemy contained one to two hours of content, whereas paid courses often had 10, 12, or even 15+ hours of content.

Still, the free courses are an excellent way of learning the basics and “testing the waters” in a topic before committing more time and money. Then, if you’re committed, you can invest in one of the most advanced online courses on the platform.

Most courses on Udemy are cheap because the website relies on high volume to make money. This is normal within the e-learning space and for online courses in general. While creating a course requires a lot of time and effort upfront, it doesn’t cost the teacher or Udemy any additional money to bring on each additional student. The lessons are already created and ready to be viewed.

Because of this, Udemy instructors, and the company itself, can still make a great profit even with relatively low pricing.

The fact that courses on Udemy are relatively cheap doesn’t mean that the training and instructors aren’t good.

Rest assured, you can find high-quality courses on Udemy despite the prices being low.

I was doubtful about this initially because of the low pricing, too, but after going through a few popular courses, I changed my mind. They were absolutely worth the money and time spent!

Note, however, that there’s one additional reason some instructors offer their courses for very cheap (or free). Some teachers on Udemy will upload a basic course in the hopes of driving leads to their “main” course, which costs more money and is often hosted on another site.

This has been happening for years. So if you enroll in a course on Udemy, make sure you check how much course content you’ll be getting (in terms of hours and number of videos).

However, if you want to gain knowledge in an area beyond the basics, I recommend investing in a paid Udemy course.

Is Udemy Accredited?

Udemy is not accredited; therefore, you don’t earn transferrable credits when you take courses with Udemy, and you won’t earn a degree such as a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, no matter how many courses you take. If your goal is to obtain a degree, you should seek out other educational institutions.

However, with Udemy courses, you will be learning real-world skills that you can use to start a freelance career , become more valuable to your employer to earn a raise or promotion , or start a new hobby.

Udemy Certificates of Completion

Some Udemy courses will award certificates of completion to students.

These certificates are provided in PNG or JPG format and can be uploaded to your LinkedIn profile or other social networks, shown to potential employers, etc. You could also convert the image file into a PDF. Many free online programs offer this option.

So while you won’t be earning transferrable credits or a degree when you take online courses with Udemy, you will be able to show that you finished a course and gained knowledge in a new area.

Are Udemy Certificates Worth It?

Udemy certificates are not formally recognized by employers, recruiters, or accredited educational institutions, and you shouldn’t enroll in a Udemy course only for the certificate.

The main reason to go through the courses and lessons that Udemy offers is to gain a real-world education and build skills that you hope to use. The certificate that some courses offer should be secondary.

The certificate is a nice little bonus that you can show on your LinkedIn profile, etc., but it’s not a huge difference-maker, and I’d go so far as to say that you shouldn’t rule out a popular, high-rated course just because it doesn’t offer a certificate. (Some Udemy courses seem to offer a certificate of completion while others don’t).

If a particular class on Udemy includes a certificate of completion, you’ll see it among the course details just before clicking “Add to cart” when viewing the course. Look for the section entitled, “This course includes.”

Should You Put Udemy Courses on a Resume?

Yes, it is beneficial to put Udemy courses on your resume. Doing so may help you get more job interviews and will also give you a unique talking point in your interviews, when the hiring manager asks what you’ve been doing recently aside from job searching.

As a former recruiter , I can tell you that this is especially important if you’re unemployed, were laid off or fired, etc.

The more time that passes without a job, the more employers start to worry that your skills might not be quite as “fresh” as other candidates. (I know this isn’t always true, but it’s how many employers view the situation).

So to combat this, put your completed Udemy courses on your resume and LinkedIn profile, and you’ll also have a great response in interviews when employers ask, “What have you been doing to keep your skills fresh while unemployed?”

I recommend listing your completed Udemy course topic under your resume skills section. Here’s an example of what your list of skills may look like if you completed a Udemy course in email marketing.

First, it may be worth taking a Udemy course to boost your job search skills directly

For example, Udemy offers classes in topics such as:

• Negotiation
• Job interviewing
• Public speaking
• Body language

Udemy is also worth it for boosting a job-related skill or teaching yourself a new professional skill

After completing some training related to the type of jobs you’re pursuing, you can mention it in your cover letters  and bring it up in job interviews when employers ask, “What have you been doing to keep your skills current?” or, “What have you been doing this year aside from job searching?” (These are particularly common interview questions if you’ve been unemployed for a few months or more.)

You can also use Udemy classes to build the foundation to break into a brand-new career

Whether you want to transition into a new full-time career, or set out as a freelancer or consultant, Udemy offers a chance to learn topics like software engineering, web design, data science, digital marketing , etc.

Those are all high-demand, high-paying jobs, in industries where employers often consider skills above formal education and degrees.

UDEMY is for hoppiests. There is no academic value at all .Anybody can set up a video and read some books can claim that he is providing and online course . I took 2-3 couırses from them . One photography course . Instructor just read a book . Also Udemy itself says anybody can submit a course and ask some fee for it . People unfortunately do not understand what it is. And they pay . I am an employer . If somebody comes to me saying that he has a certificate from UDEMY, I would not even talk to him . For good academic courses go to EDX get courses from Harvard Stanford, MIT , Duke , Princeton , then I can hire you at the 80 % of the salary I would pay to Harvard graduate . Seriously. Even Coursera is not very serious online . It is a commercial company. So they are not selective in their universities as members .

Guys, you need to be familiar to the topic. If you have a software engineer background and you learn a tool or framework on udemy I believe it is fine. If somebody is claiming that is a software engineer because he watched some videos on udemy that is a different story.

I would say Udemy as a whole is really useful for obtaining new skills, and you could list those skills on your CV once you've completed your Udemy course. I would say since they aren't official certs to leave it off your CV as having examples of your work (job exp/portfolios) speaks a lot louder. If there is an officially recognized cert for the skill I would use Udemy as study material for that (if you work in IT for example you'll definitely want the real certs or job experience).

I found very good courses in UDemy with experience instructor and had a very good learning experience. Unless you are able to implement the learning to your work, no course irrespective of classroom training or online can help you !!
