Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest

In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, the DAR is launching the " Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest ”!

This contest will focus on the men and women, both famous and unknown, who figured in the events of the American Revolution (1773 – 1783). Students will be asked to discuss how their chosen Patriot contributed to the founding of the nation. These Patriots may be one of our famous Founders, or an everyday man, woman, or child who supported the American Revolution in ways both large or small. We hope that this wide topic area will allow students to choose individuals who capture their imagination and interest.

Students will be encouraged to use primary sources (that is, immediate, first-hand accounts such as letters, diaries, speeches, and newspaper reports) for their research, and judges will be asked to take the quality and scope of references into account when judging the essays. While many primary references are online, at, for example, the National Archives’ Founders Online project or the Library of Congress’ American Revolution Digital Collection , DAR chapters are also encouraged to reach out to students to help them explore the many primary sources available in their area at local historical societies, local libraries, and even in chapters’ own records and collections.

The essay contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private and parochial schools, and to those who are home schooled. All grades will be judged together, with one national winner chosen. Chapters may award each essay writer a Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Participation Certificate, available for purchase through the DAR Store . Chapters will select one essay as the chapter winner, for whom the chapter may purchase a certificate/bronze medal set available for sale through the DAR Store . States will also select one essay winner to represent the state for judging at the Division level, and a state level winner certificate/silver medal set (also available for sale through the DAR Store) will be presented to the state winners. Each Division level will also have one winner, who will receive a certificate and a book.

The National Society will select first-, second- and third-place winners. The national winner will receive a National Winner Certificate, pin and monetary award, presented at Continental Congress. The winning essay may appear in official DAR communications. (National second-and third-place winners will also receive a certificate and monetary award.) Additional information is available by visiting the American History Committee section of the DAR Members Website .

This essay contest is a wonderful opportunity to engage students during the 250 th anniversary of the American Revolution. It complements the American History essay contest , which is for students in the 5 th to 9 th grades. It has also replaced the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest: the DAR administered that high school essay contest in partnership with the National Christopher Columbus Association for 25 years, but has decided to focus on our core mission of promoting the history and ideas of the American Revolution. This essay contest will encourage students to think more about the many different people, known and unknown, who were a part of the American Revolution, and perhaps even see themselves in the figures they write about.

The TOPIC for 2023-2024

“The Stars and Stripes Forever" --- On May 14, 1897, John Philip Sousa played his new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”  This song would become the national march of the United States on December 11, 1987. Imagine it is 1897 and you are a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times. Your newspaper editor has asked you to write an article about the new song performed that day. Your article needs to tell about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song. It is the first performance of the song, so make sure your article includes thoughts about the music and how the audience reacts to what was seen and heard that day.

Title of Essay:  Stars & Stripes Forever Length 300-1,000 words (depending on grade level, please check forms) Please note that the entire essay must be the student’s original work. West chester, downingtown students win dar essay contest.

Senator Kane, Melissa Griswold, Graham Drummond and Michael Hartman. (SUBMITTED PHOTO)

Each year students in grades fifth through eighth are given the opportunity to compose an essay and have it presented to the CCDAR for evaluation.  In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Nov. 11, 2021, the essay topic was “Imagine that you had a brother who lost his life on the battlefields of France during World War I. You and your family attended the Nov. 11, 1921, dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. Describe what this meant to you and your family. Why is it important to remember those who gave their lives to serve our nation?” Judging guidelines included historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, neatness, and that the essay is the student’s own work.

The winners were Graham Drummond, 6th grade, Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center, Downingtown, and Claire Bushnell, 8th grade, E.N. Peirce Middle School, West Chester.

All winners have their essays submitted to the state level where Claire Bushnell was selected as the Pennsylvania State DAR 8th grade winner. Christopher Beatty, Gifted Resource teacher at E.N. Peirce Middle School of West Chester, said about Claire “I’ve known Claire for three years now and she gets more impressive with each passing year.  She has a wide array of interests and abilities.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see her in a political office in the future, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if she becomes a roller coaster engineer.  Claire will succeed in whatever field and in whatever program that is lucky enough to gain her interest.”

In 2021, The National Society of the DAR established a new high school-level essay contest focused on figures of the American Revolution, in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. The contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12.The topic was “Select a figure from the era of the American Revolution (1773-1783). Discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, who he or she was and his/her contribution to the founding of a new nation. Your figure may be any person, whether a well-known figure or an everyday man, woman or child who supported the American Revolution in ways large or small.”  The evaluation criteria were the same as the American History Essays contest. Congratulations to CCDAR winner Melissa Griswold, a 10th grader at Unionville High School.

During the March 7 CCDAR meeting winners were given a certificate, medal and monetary award by Dawn Coughlan, CCDAR Regent, and Elberta Clinton, Chair, American History Essay Awards. Senator John Kane and Michael Hartman, representing Senator Carolyn Comitta, presented the students with a citation on behalf of the Pennsylvania state senate.

DAR Announces 2021 American History Contest Winners

dar essay competition 2021

Barrington Illinois-based Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, announced the winners of its 2021 American History Essay Contest. Kudos to the students, fifth- through eighth-graders, who participated in the contest by writing and submitting their essays on "The Boston Massacre" and the role it played in organizing American colonists against the British King and Parliament.

First place essay contest winners, all from Barrington District 220, are: Zofia Bizon, fifth-grader at Roslyn Road Elementary; Abigail Betz, sixth-grader at Station Middle School (last year's fifth grade winner); Neev Patel, seventh-grader at Prairie Campus; and Scout Storms, eighth-grader at Station Middle School.

Two of the winners went on to next levels of competition and were named DAR District IV and State winners. They are fifth-grader Zofia Bizon (District IV and State winner) and eighth-grader Scout Storms (District IV winner).

"We extend special thanks to the parents, teachers, and judges within Barrington District 220 who provide support to the students and encourage them to participate in this annual contest," said Joyce Wright, Regent of the Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR. "Our chapter is delighted to provide this opportunity to grade school students to learn and write about our nation's early history and be recognized for their efforts."

The Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded in Barrington, IL in 1972. NSDAR is a volunteer women's service organization headquartered in Washington, DC. Since its founding in 1890, over one million women have joined both nationally and around the world. The local Barrington Chapter raises funds throughout the year and distributes them to 501 (c) (3) organizations whose missions support that of NSDAR: Historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Membership in NSDAR is open to any woman age 18 and over who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

Continental Congress met from May 10, 1775-March 1, 1781, and included delegates from all thirteen colonies. This Congress was instrumental in shaping what was to become the United States of America. Imagine that you are a delegate during the 1775-1776 Second Continental Congress. Which colony are you from and what will be important for you to accomplish for your colony?

and is to be used to score each essay and award points. Essays with the highest points will need to be sent on for further competition.

Choose a woman to honor for this recognition by taking into consideration women who have made a contribution or a difference in their communities. She could be a historical entity or currently alive and worthy of recognition. Look for women who are, or have been, intellectual, educational, social, religious, political, scientific, or cultural innovators. The woman or women being honored may be DAR members, prospective DAR members, or non-members. You may select more than one woman to honor.

It is especially recommended that your chapter focus one chapter function on your honoree so that special tribute can be paid to her. Chapters have had luncheons, teas, programs - literary and musical - at special locations to specifically honor their selected woman or women in American History. If alive, the honoree(s) should be invited to the chapter function so that special tribute can be paid.

Each chapter honoring a woman is asked to prepare a 100-word report about her, with a photo, if available. Use the form found at . These reports may be sent throughout the year to the state chairman, but the final deadline is April 1, 2023.
