u miami law first class assignments

The University of Miami School of Law Externship Program ("Externship Program") is a J.D. academic class that provides second-year (2L) and third-year (3L) students, in good academic standing, an opportunity to gain practical legal experience for academic credit by working with:

  • Local, national, and international corporations (in-house legal department or general counsel's office)
  • Government agencies
  • Public interest organizations, or
  • The judiciary

Students gain legal experience by working under the supervision of lawyers, which is supplemented and enhanced by a series of skills lectures.

Read: "Externship Programs Lead to Careers"

Please note that law firms, of any size, including solo practitioners, do not qualify as an externship field placement for the Externship Program.

Miami Law LL.M. programs often include an independent externship/practicum component; to learn more about an externship/practicum as it relates to a LL.M. program, please contact the respective LL.M. director.

General Overview

The Externship Program has two components: (1) the required work hours at the approved externship field placement and (2) classroom-based practical skills lectures. The Externship Program is an elective course that is graded pass/fail and meets a skills graduation requirement.  To receive a pass, students must successfully complete both   the required field work hours at an approved externship field placement and the classroom component.

Please note that the Externship Program hosts non-CLI externship field placements; all CLI-externships field placements must be pursued through the Litigation Skills Program.

The Externship Program Director is Jessi Tamayo who can be reached at [email protected].

Requirements:

  • A substantive legal experience;
  • An on-site supervising attorney, licensed in the United States, who directly supervises the student and provides feedback about the student's work.

Please note because students receive academic credit in part for their work/real-world education at the externship field placement, students are not eligible to receive financial compensation from externship employers or other sources including stipends or fellowships.

See requirements to qualify as an externship field placement

In order for a student to participate in and receive academic credit for his/her participation in the Externship Program:

  • The student must be an enrolled student at Miami Law, in good academic standing;
  • The student must submit a fully executed Student-Agency Agreement with an approved externship field placement by the established deadline date;
  • The student must successfully complete the required work hours;
  • The student must attend all assigned skills lectures and complete all assignments;
  • The student must submit a Weekly Timesheet and submit a complete Time Certification Form at the end of the externship term, verifying that he/she completed the required field work hours;
  • A student cannot repeat a prior externship field placement for additional academic credit;
  • There is a 9-credit cap as to the number of academic credits that a student may earn through the Externship Program that may be applied towards a student's graduation requirements in accordance with the Miami Law Registrar Office's J.D. Degree Requirements; please see  Self-Audit Form .
  • ALL International Students MUST request CPT clearance before they can be approved for any externship opportunity.

Summer 2024 Strict Deadlines

After securing an approved externship field placement, to formally enroll in the Summer 2024 Externship Program, a student must first submit a Student-Agency Agreement   (signed by the student and supervising attorney).

The Student-Agency Agreement memorializes the externship relationship between the student, externship field placement and the law school and outlines each party's responsibilities to this course. It is the submission of a complete Student-Agency Agreement that triggers the enrollment process for this course.

Please note that the Summer 2024 Externship Program's course requirements have been adjusted to account for COVID-19's impact, which is reflected in the Summer 2024 Student-Agency Agreement.

Credit/Hours for Summer 2024

The Externship Program is a 3 credit course for which at least 200-hours of work at an approved externship field placement is required.

The classroom component for the Summer 2024 Externship Program will continue to be conducted in a distance learning format; this includes the required skills lectures, research modules and the submission of assignments. The class will meet every week via Zoom. The first class meeting for this course is the Mandatory Orientation.

Externs must make all necessary arrangements to attend their assigned lectures including adjusting their externship field work schedule.  Real-time virtual attendance at assigned skills lectures will be strictly enforced.

In addition to completing the required field work hours, remote skill lectures and remote research modules, the extern will be asked to complete documents that will allow the law school to monitor his/her externship experience including Weekly Timesheets, Learning Plans & Goals Memoranda, Mid-Semester Evaluation, Final Student Evaluation and Time Certification Form as part of his/her academic responsibilities for this course.

Policies attached to the Externship Program

  • A student must be in good academic standing to participate in the Externship Program.
  • A student cannot repeat a prior externship field placement for additional academic credit.
  • There is a 9-credit cap on the number of academic credits that a student may earn through the Externship Program that may be used towards his/her graduation requirements in accordance with the UM Law Registrar Office's J.D. Degree Requirements; please see the  Self-Audit Form .

Externship FAQs

A student may secure an externship field placement in two ways:

  • The student may apply to and secure a position with a pre-approved externship field placement via Symplicity or
  • The student may secure his/her own legal internship and request that it is converted into an externship field placement.  To make this request, the student will be asked to provide Professor Tamayo with detailed information about the proposed field placement. Professor Tamayo will vet the placement and make a determination.

Please note that there is no guarantee that a student will receive an offer from a pre-approved externship field placement or that a student's self-secured internship will be approved for conversion into an externship field placement; the goal is to provide students with as many opportunities as possible.

To participate in the Externship Program, a student must complete the bidding process through the  Symplicity Job Database System. "Bidding" entails submitting a resume and other requested application materials via Symplicity or by e-mail (directly to the employer) pursuant to the employer's preference as specified within the job posting. Instructions on how to bid on the Symplicity system are provided in the  Student Guide to Symplicity . All students have a Symplicity account. If a student cannot locate his/her Symplicity login information, the student should e-mail [email protected]  and provide his/her full name, class year and e-mail address (this e-mail address will become the student's username for the Symplicity system). The student will then receive his/her login information via e-mail. Please allow up to two business days for a response.

Externship Opportunities are available on Symplicity. Opportunities that are identified as externship-eligible are approved, non-paid legal internship opportunities that qualify for academic credit through the Externship Program. Externship-eligible positions are externship field placements that a student may pursue for academic credit or as a strict volunteer. Opportunities that are identified as externship-required are approved, non-paid legal internship opportunities that require students earn academic credit through the Externship Program to secure and pursue the position.

Students will be notified about any new pre-approved externship field placements added to the Job Posting Board via e-mail (the e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address associated with the student's Symplicity account).

All externship placements are subject to Professor Tamayo's approval. If a student has secured his/her own legal internship and would like to submit it for approval, the student will be required to follow the steps outlined on the Externship Program Fact Sheet .

Would an Internship Secured for Myself Qualify as an Externship Field Placement?

A student will be required to submit his/her contact information along with the proposed placement's contact information including his/her potential supervising attorney's direct contact information. The student's potential supervising attorney may be contacted directly for more information. Professor Tamayo will inform the student of its decision as soon as it is made via e-mail.

No;  just as a student is not guaranteed he/she will be offered an externship position, an employer is not guaranteed that a student-applicant will accept a position when it is offered.

If a student-applicant chooses to not accept an offer, the student must decline the offer in a professional manner, including calling the externship employer to decline the offer. After a student has made a commitment to an externship field placement, he/she should not rescind his/her acceptance. Additionally, a student must decline an offer in a timely manner to give the externship employer and other students an opportunity to fill the position.

Please notify Professor Tamayo at jtamayo @law.miami.edu , when declining an offer from an externship field placement.

To be registered for the Externship Program, a student must first submit a complete Student-Agency Agreement (for the appropriate semester)  to Professor Tamayo. Professor Tamayo verifies a student's placement with the receipt of a fully executed Student-Agency Agreement. A Student-Agency Agreement is an agreement between the student, externship field placement, and the law school that states the terms of the externship relationship and each party's responsibilities.

Upon receiving and processing a complete Student-Agency Agreement for an approved externship field placement, Professor Tamayo will provide the student with a unique permission code, assigned by the Registrar's Office, by e-mail along with detailed enrollment instructions.

The student will then be able to enroll him/herself to the Externship Program by entering the permission code, when prompted, by CaneLink after adding the Externship Program Course Number to his/her schedule.

A student must successfully complete the required field work hours and the classroom component including submitting all required assignments by the specified deadline date.

Since an essential component of the Externship Program is the work that a student completes at his/her externship field placement, the feedback from an extern's supervising attorney about the student's performance and progress (i.e., professionalism, attitude, work product, attire etc.) will play a major role in a student's ability to pass this course.

More Information

If you have any additional questions about the Externship Program, please contact Jessi Tamayo at [email protected].

Taylor Swift is now a class at the University of Miami. What will the students learn?

A University of Miami vice dean’s own homework assignment last year — learn all you can about Taylor Swift’s songs as fast as you can — has led to one of the coming fall semester’s hottest classes on the Coral Gables campus.

Students were more than ready for it. The UM’s “Mastermind Taylor Swift Brand” strategic communication class filled up at a pace almost as fast as tickets sold out last August for the superstar’s three South Florida concerts in October 2024. Those shows open the second U.S. leg of Swift’s Eras Tour at Miami Gardens’ Hard Rock Stadium.

Ayana George, a UM freshman marketing major, is one of the lucky to score a seat in the class. The course description “piqued her interest,” she said.

“My passion for understanding how brands evolve and grow successful entities like Taylor Swift led me to join this course,” George said. “I believe this course offers a fresh perspective.”

When registration opened this month at UM for the 150-capacity class that’s open to all majors and begins Aug. 20, all seats filled within four days. The school raised the cap to 175. There is now a waiting list for STC 290. UM might add more seats for the Tuesday-Thursday 75-minute class.

Not every student is a self-described “Swiftie.”

“While I’m not specifically a ‘Swiftie,’ I do appreciate the approaches that she took to enhance her brand and shape the music industry,” George said. “In the end, I hope that I gain a comprehensive understanding of how to develop effective brand strategies, while also recognizing this talented artist and listening to some amazing music.”

How a UM Swift class was born

For Alyse Lancaster, UM’s vice dean for academic affairs in the School of Communication, that “Mastermind Taylor Swift Brand” class she formulated and will teach is a family affair.

The class is happening because her daughter Gabi planted the idea. And her son Sydney, a sophomore at the University of Florida majoring in interior design, designed the class’s promotional poster, which UM students have seen around campus since March.

“Taylor Swift has been a staple in my house since my now-17-year-old daughter was 4 years old,” Lancaster told the Miami Herald in an email interview. “But it wasn’t until we were able to purchase pre-sale tickets for the Eras Tour concert that things changed on my end. My daughter told me that I needed to learn all of the songs on the Eras Tour set list, plus most of Taylor’s other songs — ‘because you never know what the two surprise songs she will perform at the concert’ and I need to be ready.”

Gabi made her mom a playlist. Lancaster listened intently.

Don’t blame me, love made me crazy/If it doesn’t, you ain’t doin’ it right blasting on Lancaster’s exercise walks.

And you call me up again just to break me like a promise/So casually cruel in the name of being honest , Taylor’s dig at ex-beau Jake Gyllenhaal, coming from Lancaster’s car stereo on those drives to and from campus in Miami’s infernal traffic jams.

All this cramming of Swift’s music gave the educator plenty of contemplative and creative time.

“Then she and I went to see the Eras Tour movie and while watching this incredible woman perform for 3.5 hours straight, through nine eras of her music, interacting with her over-the-moon-excited, completely engaged audience, I finally understood what the big deal is,” Lancaster said.

On one of those walks, the idea for the class hit Lancaster like an immediate, enchanted revelation, much like words and music come to Swift. She knew she had to teach a communication-strategy class at UM built around Swift’s brand.

Swift in academia from UF to Harvard

Other places of higher education have designed courses around the pop star.

Last fall, the University of Miami’s School of Law had an adjunct professor teach a seven-week intensive class called “Intellectual Property Law Through the Lens of Taylor Swift.”

The University of Florida’s one-credit discussion-based spring 2024 class, “ Musical Storytelling With Taylor Swift and Other Iconic Female Artists,” filled its 15 spots in 10 seconds when early registration opened last fall, the campus newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator, reported.

In the last year, Stanford University has offered “All Too Well (Ten Week Version),” a course analyzing Swift’s 10-minute masterpiece, “All Too Well” and “The Last Great American Songwriter: Storytelling With Taylor Swift Through the Eras.”

Harvard’s Department of English opened its “ Taylor Swift and Her World ” course this spring, promising to cover “illicit affairs and hoaxes” and “champagne problems and incomplete closure.”

Berklee College of Music in Boston offers a “Songs of Taylor Swift” class with a focus on the performer’s music composition and lyrics, The Boston Globe reported.

In addition to Lancaster’s coming UM class, Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, Houston’s Rice University, the University of Delaware and the University of California, Berkeley all plan Swift-inspired courses in 2024, according to Best Colleges.

“I typically teach courses in advertising strategy development and social media strategies,” Lancaster said. “These classes focus on brand-building, identifying and communicating with the desired target audience, building brand loyalty, and using social media to build a long-lasting relationship between the brand and its loyal audience. And it occurred to me that Taylor Swift has successfully built a billion-dollar brand with a multicultural, multi-generational, global audience of millions of loyal fans.

“So why not use Taylor Swift’s success and business prowess as the foundation for teaching students about brand-building, audience-building, and the importance of communication in achieving those relationships? And just like that, the class was born,” Lancaster said.

What students will learn

Students who managed to secure a seat for UM’s STC 290 in the fall will learn about the marketing and communication strategies that Swift has used to build her billion-dollar brand via “the most diverse and loyal group of fans many of us have ever seen,” Lancaster said.

Take Emma Craig, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering at UM.

“It’s going to be a ‘Cruel Summer’ waiting until fall for the new Taylor Swift class coming to UM,” the student told The Miami Hurricane campus newspaper in anticipation of registration for the course.

For “Mastermind,” the class title borrowed from one of Swift’s “Midnights” tracks, Lancaster’s lectures aim to teach students how to use promotional, persuasive and strategic communication to build a connection with a target audience, and how to get that audience invested in the brand, Lancaster said as she builds her syllabus.

School of Communication issues such as freedom of expression, the right to privacy for public figures, and the legal limits of using artificial intelligence to alter images are also on the course agenda.

“These are skills students can use not only in the industry, but also in building their own personal brands after graduation,” Lancaster said.

Swift’s own education path

For Swift, 34, that brand-building began inside a classroom in Hendersonville, Tennessee, when she was a high-school freshman in a math class, she told the Miami Herald in an interview published in January 2008, just a month after she turned 18.

While her peers listened to the teacher lecture about algebra a few years earlier, Swift said she scribbled the lyrics to her first two hits, “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar,” in her notebook and sneaked out of class to record voice memos into her telephone.

At 17, signed to her first label, Swift already directed nearly every aspect of her career: the images on her album covers and press photos, the songs’ sequencing on her albums and other things. Swift said nothing was released to the marketplace that she hadn’t approved.

“When teachers conducted random notebook checks, they’d be freaked out — but they learned to deal with me,” Swift mused in that long-ago interview.

Knowledge retention

Taylor Swift, Lancaster says, is “in essence, a phenomenon who truly understands many of the important constructs we cover in higher education, including persuasive communication, branding, storytelling, intellectual property, and the power of music.”

One reason that universities have taken to teaching Swift, aside from the Eras-like sellout registrations for classes, is the courses give professors an opportunity to teach concepts that students might actually remember after graduation.

“If students can connect the information they learn to something that’s of great interest to them, they will not only remember that information, but they will be reminded of it whenever the topic of interest comes up. Using Taylor Swift as the impetus for teaching important concepts increases attention, learning, and retention. And plus, it makes learning fun,” Lancaster said.

“I’ve never been more excited to teach a class than I am to teach this one!”

Miami Herald Staff Writer Howard Cohen teaches a digital writing class at the University of Miami and uses examples from Taylor Swift’s songwriting in lectures.

What You Will Learn from an Online Master of Legal Studies

What You Will Learn from an Online Master of Legal Studies

By Miami Law Blog Contributor 04-02-2024

An  online Master of Legal Studies  degree program is designed with non-lawyer professionals in mind—offering an actionable, skills-based curriculum that allows students to use what they learn in class today at the office tomorrow.

Course Requirement Examples in an Online Master of Legal Studies Program

The course requirements in an online Master of Legal Studies program provide students with an opportunity to analyze the laws and regulations that influence their specific industry and to simultaneously learn how to communicate information about those topics with other professionals and clients.

Established with law-adjacent professionals in mind, an M.L.S. online curriculum is a skills-based program that emphasizes relevant, practical, technical, and soft skills required to advance your career. The coursework within an online Master of Legal Studies may vary slightly based on degree program, particularly if you choose a program that offers specialized tracks.

Below are a few course requirement examples that may be included as part of your MLS online curriculum:

U.S. Law and Regulations Foundations

Traditionally, United States Law and Regulations Foundation is an introductory course to teach students advanced information about the country’s legal system and its types of regulations in place. In addition to explaining legislative and judicial processes, it focuses on certain areas of law like torts, contracts, and constitutional law. Throughout this course, students gain an in-depth understanding of regulatory power and the basis for regulations in the U.S.

Corporate   Compliance

An ever-growing area, compliance plays a crucial part in law-adjacent careers . A corporate compliance course covers the role of a compliance professional—highlighting key topics such as corporate oversight, the role of regulators and prosecutors, the current compliance landscape, and growing trends within compliance. Throughout this type of course, students develop an understanding of the role of compliance in a corporate environment and how compliance standards shift based on industry.

Enterprise   Risk Management

An Enterprise Risk Management course may be required as part of an online Master of Legal Studies degree, and it builds upon the foundation learned in a corporate compliance course. Students explore the most pressing risk management issues in the corporate environment, with an opportunity to develop advanced risk analysis skills relevant to any law-adjacent career.

Legal Research and Writing

Considered a core course within most M.L.S. online curriculums, Legal Research and Writing emphasizes some of the most essential practical and technical skills in law-adjacent careers. During this course, students can become proficient in the best legal research and writing practices. They have the opportunity to work with a wide range of legal research tools and use those tools to conduct legal analysis throughout a series of exercises and assignments.

Information and Data Privacy

Given technology’s prominent role in most law-adjacent careers, an Information and Data Privacy course is often a core requirement within online Master of Legal Studies programs. Throughout this course, students explore key topics, such as information privacy law, global data privacy and protection, machine learning and the law, digital commerce regulation, and trending topics in cybersecurity. In an age where data harvesting has a critical role in the business world, this course plays a pivotal part in the curriculum of an online Master of Legal Studies.

Legal Knowledge   and Expertise

Every course within online Master of Legal Studies degree programs is designed to help expand working knowledge of the legal field. By emphasizing a comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape, students can develop exceptional legal expertise for their law-adjacent careers. Whether you are working in compliance or as a risk management consultant, you need to have a solid understanding of the legal system to perform your role with precision.

Legal Research and Writing   Skills

Legal research and writing skills can only be developed through advanced practice exercises. An online Master of Legal Studies degree program can give professionals in law-adjacent careers the opportunity to utilize legal research tools and learn how to effectively incorporate their research into nuanced, analytical drafts. By practicing legal research and writing techniques, students are better able to pursue careers that require candidates to have well-developed legal research and writing skills.

Communication Skills

Considered by  LinkedIn  to be the most in-demand skill, effective communication is crucial in any career but especially within the legal field. Throughout online Master of Legal Studies curriculums, communication is emphasized as a critical skill within each course, and students learn how to use modern communication tools to their advantage.

In addition to working on becoming more efficient and effective communicators, students learn how to translate complex legal terms and topics into information that the average person would understand. This ability to humanize the legal field is essential, particularly in regulatory compliance careers and risk management positions.

Critical Thinking   Skills

Critical thinking is one of the most sought-after skills in the 21st century. With a curriculum that emphasizes the importance of data collection and analysis, online Master of Legal Studies degrees help students develop profound, intuitive critical thinking skills that can be applied instantly within their law-adjacent careers. Coursework as part of these degree programs provides students with ample hands-on learning opportunities to collect data, conduct research, analyze results, and think critically about possible outcomes.

Critical thinking is increasingly imperative within the realm of law, particularly as non-lawyer professionals adapt to changing technologies and a more complex legal landscape. As compliance standards change and technology rapidly advances, legal professionals need to be able to come up with innovative solutions for their organizations and clients to remain competitive in the field.

Organizational Skills

Online degree programs, especially graduate degrees aimed toward working professionals looking to advance their careers, are known for their flexibility and versatility. By giving students the opportunity to pursue their educational goals on their own terms, these degree programs also allow them to fine-tune their organizational skills.

An online Master of Legal Studies degree requires students to effectively balance their existing responsibilities as well as rigorous coursework. Throughout the dynamic courses, you have an opportunity to improve upon your organizational skills and learn how these can be applied within the professional sphere.

Perhaps the most advantageous part of this type of degree program is that the organizational skills you learn can be used immediately in a professional setting. As you maneuver through coursework (which is completed entirely online), you become familiar with the latest tools and most advanced technology. This way, you can begin using these newfound skills in your own career at once, allowing you to grow professionally while pursuing your degree program.

Understanding of Relevant Regulations &   Compliance

Government regulations play a pivotal role in any law-adjacent career, and professionals must be able to navigate the latest regulatory changes while relying on a solid foundational understanding of U.S. regulatory requirements.

Whether you are working in risk management or regulatory compliance, you must be familiar with the most relevant regulations and compliance standards. An online Master of Legal Studies curriculum provides students with an introduction to U.S. regulatory compliance as well as an opportunity to specialize according to their chosen career path. Knowing how to interpret regulations and communicate information about regulations and compliance is a key component of any law-adjacent career.

Coursework often covers the most relevant topics in regulations and compliance—such as corporate oversight, the role of regulators, the changing compliance landscape, and critical compliance positions expected to be in demand in the coming years.

Understanding of   Legal Ethics   and Principles

By recognizing that non-lawyer professionals still must have a solid understanding of legal ethics and principles, an online Master of Legal Studies degree program uniquely prepares you to progress your law-adjacent career. The curriculum can delve into legal ethics and principles within a variety of sectors, including cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, healthcare, real estate, finance, and human resources.

Some topics addressed within the curriculum often include information privacy, data privacy protection, and ethical considerations in regulatory compliance. Students enrolled in these degree programs are better able to navigate complex ethical matters within their specific industries, offering a competitive advantage in a workforce that requires professionals to be responsible, aware, and moral.
