14 years have passed since the unexpected death of Kalpana Chawla shook the nation and the world. Yet, the memory of the icon that she was is still fresh in our minds. Being the first professional Indian astronaut in space, she became a household name in India when she embarked on a much anticipated journey to space aboard the Columbia in 2003, with six other crew members. The Columbia met with a tragic accident on re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere merely 16 minutes away from home.

I was only 7 when this happened, but I remember my entire family watching the landing on live television and I can still recall the shock and the grief that followed everyone around for days.

”The path from dreams to reality does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get onto it and perseverance to follow it.” I have come across this quote by Kalpana Chawla on various motivational posters numerous times and always dismissed it as unreliable internet mumbo jumbo. This was until I read up on her life to discover what an icon she was and the kind of odds she had to fight to simply do what she wanted to do. The path she took and the achievements that followed were by no means conventional or easy, especially for someone with her background. It is her remarkable courage and ambition that got her there and in the process inspired an entire generation to do the same. In this article, we take a look at the life and times of this trailblazer, whose story can still work its magic by inspiring people to pursue their dreams, no matter what the circumstances are.

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana to Sanjyoti Chawla and Banarasi Lal Chawla on 17 th March 1961. She was the youngest of four siblings and was lovingly called ‘Montu’ by members of her family. Her ancestors being refugees of the partition, the family gained financial stability very gradually after trying their hand in different kinds of businesses including the sale of clothes. On entering the tyre manufacturing business they finally stood on their own feet.

In her later years, she admitted to realising the importance of hard work from watching her father build a successful career from practically nothing. She joined Tagore Bal Niketan in Karnal, at a time when attending school was a rarity for girls. In most classrooms female students made up barely 10% of the total class strength. Her teachers noted that as a toddler she always preferred to craft or sketch airplanes during art class.

Long before she decided to become an astronaut, she remembers being mesmerised by the sky, the stars and what lay beyond while lying on the cot in the courtyard of her house on summer nights. In an interview with India Today she said, ‘The sense of awe for the heavens started here’.

When her love for flying became apparent, her father took her for a ride at the flying club in their town, one of the twelve flying clubs in India at the time. It is here that a young Kalpana got her first taste of flying and from there her passion for it only grew stronger.

Early Education and Challenges

Chawla did her Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering from Punjab Engineering College , Chandigarh. She was in class 10 when she decided she wanted to be an engineer. On informing her father about the career she wanted to pursue, he suggested she consider a more respectable profession like medicine or teaching and not something that was conventionally meant for boys. Her response to this was simply, “This is what I really want to do” . While joining college, her professors also encouraged her to take a more ‘lady-like’ field like electronics instead of aerospace engineering. Yet, her argument remained the same –  “This is what I really want to do” . Getting admitted to a college in Chandigarh also meant moving out her hometown, another milestone in an environment where women were expected to get married and ‘settle down’.

Migrating to the US

At the time, finding no scope in India for further studies in the field, ambition took over and in 1982 she went to the USA to pursue a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas , Arlington. Subsequently, she received her Doctorate from the University of Colorado , Boulder in 1988. Given her love for airplanes and flying, the goal had always been to work on designing and building high-tech planes. Wanting to become an astronaut and going to space was a dream that developed much later.

Joining NASA

After receiving her doctorate, she got a job at NASA’s Ames Research Centre , California (ARC). The ARC focuses on astrobiology, supercomputing, robotic lunar explorations etc, all of which help in NASA’s space missions. Kalpana’s specific area of research at the centre was computational fluid dynamics (CFD) where she tried to devise methods to accurately predict the pattern of air flow around an aircraft. In 1990, she was naturalized as a citizen of the US. The Challenger disaster of 1986  in which the space shuttle broke apart 73 seconds after its launch killing all the crew members wasn’t too long ago, yet the brave Kalpana, who was never afraid of a new challenge, applied to NASA’s space programme. In 1994 she was selected to be part of their upcoming 16-day microgravity mission. The STS-87 mission aboard the space shuttle Columbia began on November 19 th , 1997 with a 6-member crew.

Her duty on the mission was to operate a robotic arm to deploy the Spartan satellite, used to study the sun in collaboration with SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) a NASA/ European spacecraft. Being a mission specialist for the journey, she was also responsible for heading several microgravity experiments while on board the spacecraft. The STS-87 orbited the Earth 252 times covering 6.5 million miles in 376 hours and 34 minutes.

On her return, she talked of being blown away by the beauty and the vastness of space. “When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system.”

Second Time in Space: The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

Her second mission to space was as a mission specialist on the STS-107 Columbia which departed on January 16 th , 2003. The seven-member crew managed to conduct 80 micro-gravity research experiments on their 16-day mission clocking in 24 work hours a day by working in shifts. At the end of the mission, the space shuttle began its journey back home to the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. During the launch, a piece of the shield that protects the spacecraft from heating upon re-entry came off the wing of the shuttle. On 1 st February 2003 on its way back, the heat generated while passing the Earth’s atmosphere destabilised the shuttle and caused it to break up into several parts. All crew members including Kalpana Chawla were killed.

At the memorial service for the Columbian Astronauts, the then President of the United States, George W Bush tried to put in words what her loss meant for both nations:

“ None of our astronauts travelled a longer path to space than Kalpana Chawla. She left India as a student, but she would see the nation of her birth, all of it, from hundreds of miles above. When the sad news reached her home town, an administrator at her high school recalled, ‘She always said she wanted to reach the stars. She went there, and beyond.’ Kalpana’s native country mourns her today, and so does her adopted land.”

With her two missions, Kalpana Chawla travelled a total of 30 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes in space.

Honours and Recognition

She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor , the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.

Given the scale of her achievements, the kind of recognition and honour she has received since her death is no surprise. KARNAL, India, Feb. 2 — In the early 1960's, when Kalpana Chawla was born, the birth of a boy in this north Indian city prompted celebrations and congratulatory visits.

The birth of a girl was met and still is, often — with quiet disappointment.

Kalpana, the youngest of four children, and the third girl, seemed to sense that reality, her brother, Sanjay, said, and from early on was shaped by it.

"She was determined, "`I'm going to tell these guys I'm not just another girl,"' Sanjay Chawla said on Saturday. "She was going to be better than the boys."

She was. She became only the second Indian-born astronaut and the first female one. She died on Saturday on her second space shuttle voyage at age 41, along with six fellow astronauts, but not before leaving a deep mark here.

In the early narrative of Kalpana Chawla's abruptly truncated life, there is a disquieting undercurrent, of the girl who was always being told "no," simply because she was a girl.

But overpowering it is the story of the girl who refused to be dissuaded, and who in her clarity of aim and strength of will did her part to reshape India's complicated gender calculus.

"Her very ideology her very thinking was not traditional, not conservative," said Kamlish Mishra, who taught English at the girls' preparatory college that Ms. Chawla attended.

"She never had the feeling that because she was a girl, there were things she should not do," said Rajiv Mittal, a businessman who grew up with her.

In an early school photograph, most of the girls wear plaits. Kalpana, as always, former teachers said, did it her way: her hair is straight and flowing, much as it was on the recent cover of a weekly magazine, "India Today."

She looks, with a wide, ready smile, as much like a homecoming queen as an astronaut. She also looks like a girl who, as one former teacher said, would say: "I have to do this thing, and I'll do it."

The town where Kalpana Chawla grew up, and began dreaming first of flight, then of space, is a staid planned city of 300,000, whose new sectors were given names like "Urban Estate" and "Model Town." It is in the state of Haryana, which was carved from Punjab in 1966.

Statistics suggest the state has taken the cruel art of sex selection, in which female fetuses are aborted, to new heights. Among children under age 6, it has 820 girls for every 1,000 boys, according to the 2001 census.

Yet at the same time, Daljeet Kaur Madan, the deputy director at the Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School, which she attended for eight years, said she felt women in the state were bolder than they had ever been before. "Now you don't find anyone sitting at home," she said. "Girls are doing one thing or another."

In part that inconsistency suggests what enabled Ms. Chawla to reach so high: from her mother to teachers, she found mentors, often women, who encouraged her to defy molds that they had sometimes been bound by.

Ms. Chawla's parents came from Pakistan to Punjab after the partition of the subcontinent. They did not have a good educational background, their son said, and they came with almost nothing.

But Banarsi Das Chawla was an aggressive innovator who became a prosperous rubber industrialist. His daughter inherited his drive but defied his conservative tendencies.

She was unwilling to be constrained by the traditional paths open to women, and was encouraged by her mother, Sanjukta, as well as her eldest sister, according to her brother and family friends.

"My mother is very open-minded she thought her daughter should be given the independence to do what she wants, without even knowing what that meant," Sanjay Chawla said.

Her brother accompanied her to admissions at Punjab University in Chandigarh, where she selected aeronautical engineering. She was the only woman to do so. "It was a big shock to everyone there," Mr. Chawla said. They tried to discourage her, he recalled — unsuccessfully.

She went to the United States to continue her studies despite her family's, especially her father's, disapproval. She earned a masters at the University of Texas, a doctorate at the University of Colorado, and along the way married a Frenchman, Jean Pierre Harrison, in yet another flouting of convention, since in India arranged marriages remain routine. She also became an American citizen.

For the first few years after she left, there was distance from her family. But once she joined the space program, her brother said, "everyone was proud and elated."

She did not look back at her life in India, by all accounts, but she did not forget it. At her request, NASA invited her high school to participate in the Summer School Space Experience program conducted by the International Space School Foundation in Houston.

Starting in 1998, two students went each year to Houston for several weeks, spending much of their time at NASA. The program each year included dinner — Indian food cooked by her or her husband — at Ms. Chawla's house.

The students described a humble, down-to-earth woman who still loved Indian classical music, and who would speak Hindi when pressed, albeit not fluently. All the students said she had given them the same advice, and seemed eager to impart it.

"Whatever you believe in, do just follow your dreams," Neha Sharma, 18, recalled her saying. "Don't worry about whether people encourage you."

The visitors also left an impression on her. "Much impressed with the students Sushil and Amisha," Ms. Chawla wrote in a neat slanting script to the school's director in 2001. "The confidence school has instilled in them stands out. It is obvious you are still working hard. What a gold mine you have! Best regards, Kalpana."

Saturday night, students had gathered at the school to celebrate her shuttle landing aboard — singing, dancing and setting off firecrackers in anticipation. Instead came stunned silence and tragedy.

Today students gathered again, as fog draped like a mourning shroud. But the feeling was of a life that had left a far more lasting impression than the contrails of smoke that marked its end.

"Next year I want to do engineering," Ms. Sharma said, with a preternatural composure Ms. Chawla would likely have appreciated. She said of the woman who paved the way: "Still she is a role model she just cannot die."

Early life and Education

Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana to a very traditional society; yet she defied expectations by becoming India’s first female astronaut. She completed her secondary education at Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School of Karnal. As she grew up, Chawla attended local flying clubs with her father to watch planes fly overhead. Chawla earned her Bachelor of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India before migrating to the United States in 1982 and receiving both her Master of Science degree and PhD in aerospace engineering from University of Texas at Arlington in 1984. Additionally, in 1986 and 1988 from University of Colorado Boulder respectively.

Chawla began her professional career at NASA Ames Research Center, conducting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research on vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) concepts using CFD simulations. Her findings can be found published in technical journals and conference proceedings. In 1993, she joined Overset Methods Inc as Vice President and Research Scientist specializing in simulating moving multiple body problems. Chawla held both a Certified Flight Instructor rating for airplanes and gliders as well as Commercial Pilot licenses for single engine, multi engine and glider aircraft. After becoming naturalized as an American citizen in April 1991, she applied for and joined NASA Astronaut Corps. Chawla became part of its ranks in March 1995 before taking her inaugural flight in 1997.

First Space Mission

Chawla began her first space mission on 19 November 1997 as part of a six-astronaut crew tasked with piloting Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. Chawla became the first Indian woman ever to go into space. Chawla spoke the following words while floating through space: “You are simply your intelligence.” Ultimately, she had traveled an estimated 10.67 million kilometers – equal to 252 times around Earth! On her initial mission, Chawla traveled over 10-4/6.5 million miles in 252 orbits of Earth logging over 376 hours (15 days and 16 hours). During STS-87, she was responsible for deploying the Spartan Satellite which malfunctioned, leading to Winston Scott and Takao Doi undertaking a spacewalk to recover it. NASA conducted a five-month investigation that exonerated Chawla by identifying errors in software interfaces and procedures used by both flight crew and ground control. Following completion of STS-87 postflight activities, Chawla was assigned technical positions within astronaut office for work on space station projects.

Second Space Mission and Death

Chawla returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Columbia during its tragic STS-107 mission, conducting nearly 80 experiments focused on Earth and space science, advanced technology development and astronaut health and safety. Due to scheduling conflicts and technical problems – like finding cracks in engine flow liners in July 2002 – this flight was repeatedly postponed until 16 January 2003 when she finally made it back aboard Columbia on that fateful mission.

At launch time for Columbia’s 28th mission – STS-107 – foam insulation detached from her external tank and struck Columbia’s port wing, which caused minor damage compared to earlier shuttle missions; some engineers suspected more serious damage was sustained. NASA limited further investigation, reasoning that its crew could not have repaired such issues had they been confirmed.

Columbia reentered Earth’s atmosphere damaged, allowing hot atmospheric gases to permeate its internal wing structure and lead to its destruction, leading to instability and eventual break up. Space Shuttle flight operations were suspended for over two years following Columbia’s return, similar to after Challenger was lost; construction on ISS was put on hold and was completely reliant upon Roscosmos State Corporation (RPSC) of Russia for supplies until Shuttle flights resumed with STS-114 mission and crew rotation began again (29 months until STS-114) returned.

Chawla perished along with her six crew members on 1 February 2003 when Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas during reentry into Earth’s atmosphere shortly before concluding its 28th mission, STS-107. Her remains were cremated and scattered at Zion National Park in Utah according to her wishes.

Kalpana was an intelligent and bright student. She had done schooling from Karnal’s Tagore School in Punjab. She later studied Aeronautical Engineering Punjab University. She was the only girl student in her batch.

She went to America and took admission to complete her post-graduation. Kalpana Chawla did her PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder and then she got a doctorate degree. After that, she went to NASA in 1994.

From childhood, she wanted to go to space. She wanted to go to space to be on the Moon. Kalpana Chawla went to her first space mission in 1997. This mission was very successful. After this, She went on her second mission in space.

There were six members with her who went with her. She went in a shuttle, and its name was “Columbia Flight.” A Space Shuttle is a shuttle in which astronauts go to space. The crew does many experiments in space. They also studied Earth.

After the mission, the shuttle was coming back to Earth. When the shuttle was entering the atmosphere of Earth, the gases damaged the shuttle. The spacecraft broke apart because of this damage. All the members died in this accident.

Kalpana Chawla is now considered a national hero of India. She died but she inspired many people who wish to go to space. She worked hard and fulfilled all her dreams.

Every person is ambitious. It is good to be ambitious but many of us cannot achieve what we dream of. It needs immense hard work, determination, and sincerity to achieve our goal. The first Indian astronaut, Kalpana Chawla was one such person, who fulfilled her dream through her endless efforts and willpower.

Kalpana was born in the Karnal district in Haryana. She belonged to a middle-class family. She completed her primary education in Tagore Balniketan of Karnal. She completed her higher education in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College. She then went to Texas University to pursue her post-graduation.

She joined NASA after completing her Ph.D. from Colorado University. In 1997 NASA selected her for its mission on the basis of her capabilities and hard work. She traveled to outer space for the first time in 1997. She stayed in space for 400 hours. She traveled 65 lakh kilometers during this period. She traveled to space twice and stayed there for a total of 760 hours.

She was on her second space mission in 2003. The aim of this mission was to discover drugs for various incurable diseases. There were six crew members with Kalpana. The astronauts performed 80 different experiments in space. They successfully completed their mission but while returning back to earth, they met with a severe accident, and space shuttle Columbia disintegrated in space on February 1, 2003. The accident took place in Texas in the USA .

Kalpana proved that with hard work one can achieve anything in life. Kalpana was a simple, easily approachable, and down-to-earth person. She always used to help others. She was capable and very sincere. The Indian Government has honored her by giving her name to one of our satellites. Her inspiring life ended in shattering tragedy. But her indomitable spirit will speak to us forever.

Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-American astronaut. She became the first Indian woman to enter space. Kalpana was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, a small town in Haryana. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist. In 2003, she was one of the seven crew members who were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

She got her primary education in a local school where she was just an average student. She had a great fascination for airplanes from her childhood. She wanted to fly in the open sky like a bird. Therefore, she joined Punjab Engineering College to study aerospace engineering. With hard work and dedication, she got top rank. Later she went to the USA for further studies.

Kalpana was a genius. She wanted to achieve more and more. She joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration popularly known as NASA. She was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in 1994. By March 1995, she reported to the Johnson Space Center as a candidate in the 151th Group of Astronauts. Her path to the stars was full of extremely complex technical needs. However, this did not dishearten her.

Her big moment arrived in 1997 when she made her first space mission with the Space Shuttle flight STS-87. It was a 16-day research mission. During the mission, she studied the Sun’s outer atmospheric layers. This was not the end of her life’s mission. She desired to carry out many more missions.

It was again a proud moment for her when she was assigned to the crew of STS-107 in January 2003. The US space shuttle Columbia lifted Kalpana and her six-crew members on January 16, 2003. In the beginning, everything was all right. Columbia’s crew completed more than 80 scientific research experiments. They were very happy, as they had achieved their goal. Now it was the time to return to Earth.

On 1st February 2003, after 16 days, Columbia was returning to Earth. At a height of 207,000 feet over Texas, USA it lost contact and exploded. All seven astronauts were killed. The Space Shuttle disintegrated into pieces. The disaster took place during the re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Kalpana Chawla was such a heroic character who always wanted to do something adventurous. Her life itself was a great adventure. She had a great love for her motherland. She never forgot her native place and her country. With her strong willpower and achievements, she rose to such a height. We all are proud of her.

While studying aeronautical engineering at Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, Kalpana eventually preferred to live alone in one room above a garage in a bungalow after changing to several hostels as she found them noisy and not suitable for her studies. She had very few select friends, and most of the time she would restrict herself to her studies. Meanwhile, Kalpana learned karate and became a black belt.

In 1988, Kalpana Chawla got an opportunity to work at NASA Ames Research Center, where she worked on vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) concepts. In 1993, she was promoted to vice president and Research Scientist at Overset Methods, Inc., where she looked after the simulation of moving multiple body problems. Subsequently, she went on to have a Certificated Flight Instructor rating for airplanes, gliders, and Commercial Pilot licenses for single and multi-engine airplanes, seaplanes, and gliders. In April 1991, she applied for the NASA Astronaut Corps., which she joined in March 1995. While working at NASA, she requested the agency to invite her high school to participate in the Summer School Space Experience program conducted by the International Space School Foundation in Houston, and the program started in 1998, and two students would visit Houston for several weeks, spending much of their time at NASA each year. The program included dinner, Indian food cooked by Kalpana or her husband at their residence. Neha Sharma, one of the students who attended the program, once described a humble and down-to-earth Kalpana Chawla. Neha said that Kalpana would often encourage them and say,

Whatever you believe in, do just follow your dreams. A national hero.

Soon after Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian-origin person to fly in an American space shuttle in November 1997, she became so popular in India that she earned the status of a ‘national hero’ in the country. After the news of the lost space shuttle spread on February 1, 2003, there were expressions of shock and horror from everyone, from high government officials to Dr. Chawla’s elementary school classmates in India. According to R. S. Bhatia, who worked as head of the Washington office of the Indian Space Research Organization, Kalpana Chawla had become a symbol of India’s greatness, even though she was no longer a citizen. In an interview, Bhatia talked about this and said,

After her first flight, she became a national hero. She is an American citizen, but she is ours too. This is the most terrible tragedy. We have lost a hero.”

He serves as my role model because of his hardwork and dedication. This outstanding man worked consistently to improve the lives of countless people and did wonders for his nation.

Throughout his life, APJ Abdul Kalam worked hard and accomplished many wonderful things. My Role Model

The missile man of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is my role model. He is my role model not because he has achieved great things in life and become the president of India. He is my role model because he dedicated his entire life to the country and its people especially school children.

His Achievement

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam worked his entire life and achieved many great things in life. But several of his bigger achievements are the testing of Atomic bombs at Pokhran, development of the missile Agni and Prithvi, and becoming the president of India . But there is one more thing which is of great importance that is after his retirement from the presidential post he started teaching because it was his passion.

He always says that this young generation is the future of the country so guide them on the right path and they lead India to greatness.

His Personal Life

Dr. Abdul Kalam was so dedicated to his work that he usually sleeps late at night and wakes up early in the morning. Also, he never misused his power as a president of India. Besides, all this his family (brother and sisters) was also a very humble person who earn their living by doing work and they live simple lives.

Qualities of a Role Model

There are certain qualities of a good role model which make him/her a great man/women. These qualities include a demonstration of confidence and leadership , communication with everyone, being unique, showing respect and concern for others, treating everyone equally, willingness to admit mistakes, and maintaining the same character inside or outside the job. If a person possesses these qualities then he/she can be an ideal role model.

How to be a Role Model for Others?

Being a role model to someone is not an easy task especially if you focus on being a role model. The thing about being a role model is that you only do the right thing and people starts to follow. Also, you do not have to achieve something bigger just follow your heart and the above-mentioned qualities and be patient and you will be a role model one day.

Apart from Dr. Abdul Kalam, I have other role models in my life that belong to different fields and different profession. The persons are Ratan Tata, Bill Gates, Will Smith, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Kalpana Chawla , Albert Einstein , B.R. Ambedkar, my father, and my mother.
