  • Introduce yourself: Introducing yourself is a great way to start since not everyone there might know who you are. It’s also the polite thing to do. You should also acknowledge the guests and thank them for being there.
  • Say some words about the wedding and the newlyweds: Talk about the couple, their love, perhaps the story of how they met and what they mean to you.
  • Say some words about your friend: There will no doubt be lots you would want to say about your friend. However, it’s a good idea to compress it to a memory or story that expresses more about their character, also something that you can connect to their relationship and to their partner.
  • Add a joke or a quote: If you have any good best friend wedding speech quotes, this would be a good time to interject them. You could give one or two, not to make your speech too long.

  • Start with an introduction: It’s the polite thing to do, but also not everybody might know who you are.
  • Welcome the newlyweds and the guests: Welcome everyone, and thank the guests especially for taking the time to be there for the celebration.
  • Share stories about your best friend: You know them more than most, so this would be a good time to highlight their good qualities. If you’d like to give a funny best friend wedding speech you could include a hilarious memory here.
  • Say something nice about your friend’s partner: If you have any anecdotes about how they met, you could include that too.
  • End with good wishes for the couple: Say some inspiring words. Then, you can add a toast as well.

Don’ts:

  • Do not introduce bad memories: This is a day to celebrate with your friend and their family. If you have any bad memories or even any disagreements, this is not the place to bring that up. Focus on the happiness and love of the day. Everything else can come afterwards.
  • Don’t overshare: Be careful what you share. Some things are too personal to tell to a crowd. Choose to share what you know your friend would be comfortable with and the guests will be happy to hear. Don’t share any stories that would make anyone uncomfortable.
  • Do not make costly jokes: Jokes are only great when they are in good humor. Keep your jokes clean and try to strike a balance. Do not allow your jokes cross the line from funny into offensive. Light humor is always best.
  • Don’t make your speech long and boring: The perfect timing for a speech is between three and five minutes. So, don’t make your speech too short that the message gets lost. But don’t allow it get so long that the audience begins to get bored and distracted.
  • Do not mention any exes: Whether it’s your friend’s exes or their partner’s. This is not a good time to mention them. Exes belong in the past. Focus on the present, on the couple and on their joyous celebration.

43 Best Friend Wedding Speeches To Try At Your Next Wedding

43 Best Friend Wedding Speeches To Try At Your Next Wedding

Your best friend getting married is like a fantasy come true. It’s something that has crossed your mind a few times. For some, it’s unimaginable owing to the stuff you’ve been through together, you can’t imagine them being able to bag a lover. These feelings may make you not wait to give a speech at their wedding.

In this article, we’ll show you tips on writing a speech for your best friend’s wedding and the different kinds you can write.

Tips On Writing A Best Friend Wedding Speech

Like all other speeches, a best friend’s wedding speech has tips on how to write it perfectly. We have discussed some of these pointers below, which will make your speech meaningful and ear-catching.

1. Start with a personal introduction

This is where you introduce yourself and how you know your best friend. You can mention how you two met and the relatable moments that led to the upcoming marriage.

2. Keep it short and sweet

Nobody likes a lengthy speech, especially at a wedding with more fun activities awaiting the guests. Your speech should be short but full of emotion and meaning. The funny parts should also be relatable to the wedding and the newlyweds.

3. Share a story

This will surely make your speech interesting. It, of course, should be related to the wedding or the couple. You can pick a funny scenario your best friend went through in order to impress their fiance or when you two used to imagine your weddings playfully.

4. Express Gratitude

This is important to show how you don’t take the moment for granted. You could thank God, the guests for showing up, the couple for letting you give a speech, and the audience for giving you an ear.

5. Include your best Friend’s spouse in the speech

As you mention much about your beloved best friend, remember to dwell on their spouse. Some people get carried away talking about their best friend only, which could make the spouse feel left out and give a notion that you may not want them with your best friend.

You can mention stories where the spouse is involved and mention their name when you mention your best friend.

Funny Maid Of Honor Wedding Speeches

It is very easy for the maid of honor to be funny because she may know the bride well. A funny speech will be easy for her to compose.

4. “You may not be able to plan for everything, but at least with a marriage, there will be one less surprise in life.”

9. “I present the happy couple due to public demand.”

10. “When the bride and groom first met, she asked if I thought he was too good-looking for her. Silly, right? He’s not even good looking”

11. “And here I am, watching you make it official. I can’t help but feel proud.”

12. “Life’s journey isn’t meant to be traveled alone.”

13. “You may have said ‘I do’ today, but I’ve always seen you two as a ‘we.’

Introduce yourself

.The first important step in creating this speech is to actually introduce yourself, you might find this quite obvious, but it’s important.

It’s easy to start talking without reminding people who you are in the first place, and as you already probably know, weddings can be very crowded.

So maybe at least 50% of the people that are present , don’t know you are, and the same goes for you.

So introduce yourself, and how you’re actually close to the married couple , and let the words start flowing.

Speak about the wedding and the now married couple

Introducing yourself is being off to a good start, but it’s not enough, now it’s time to build the base of your speech, and it’s by talking about the wedding.

Talk about how sweet the ceremony looks like, and how suitable these love birds are for each other, maybe come up with a story of how they first met, or how they fell in love.

Let the people that are present , share the same raw emotions that you feel, this way your speech will seem honest, and most importantly real.

You can speak about your role and how you helped at the wedding , which by the way, if you haven’t figured out yet, here’s a guide to help you.

Or, if you have been friends since your childhood or high school , you can speak about an adventure you two had that has left an eternal stamp in your memory.

Send them your love and congratulations and propose a toast

You’ve gone through every phase, the emotional phase and the funny phase , and now it’s time to end your speech, but with class.

For this one, you’ll need to speak about your feelings for the new-wed couple, how much you love them, and how much you wish the best for them .

Your wedding day is a time of celebration, joy, and happiness. Thoughts of your loved one not being present on your wedding day can bring on sadness if they have passed away. Throughout the wedding planning process, remember the wonderful moments and distinctive qualities you adore about them. Then, include one of these nine touching ways to remember loved ones who have passed away at your wedding.

As the ceremony begins, assign your loved one a special seat. What can I take away from the wedding of my best friend?

What can I take away from the wedding of my best friend?

Oddly enough, My Best Friend’s Wedding is about good people. That includes Jules, who is ultimately just acting irresponsibly in an effort to hang on to her best friend. She doesn’t have a bad personality, as evidenced by the fact that she learns her lesson by the end of the movie. Because no one is completely good or completely bad.

It’s been 25 years since I first sat in the backseat of my parents’ car and watched the conclusion of My Best Friend’s Wedding. We had all made the trip to the drive-in to watch Speed 2: Cruise Control, but I let my gaze stray. One more movie I wanted to see that summer was playing on the drive-in’s fourth screen, and it was a movie with enduring decency starring Julia Roberts.

While I haven’t watched as many Hollywood romantic comedies in the last ten to fifteen years, I used to be a huge fan of that genre in the late 1990s, regardless of how good the films were. (In fact, I was so enamored with them that I saw Picture Perfect a few months later in a largely empty theater, though I think mostly it was because I had a crush on Jennifer Aniston. Suffice to say, due to circumstances beyond my pre-teen control, I was unable to attend My Best Friend’s Wedding that summer, but you better believe I rented it the moment it was released on article at the end of the year.

I recently went back to it, and I’m happy to say that I may now even like it more than I did back then. When I first saw it, I adored Julia Roberts’ cunning performance, the fact that the main character was essentially the villain of the story, swooned over Cameron Diaz’s Kimmy, adored Rupert Everett’s George, and grinned broadly during that scene where George and Michael’s family sing “I Say a Little Prayer” in the restaurant.

No, Cooper says, you are not expected to bloat the gift if you are wealthy.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the bonds of friendship, love, and the beautiful journey that marriage marks. Crafting a speech that resonates requires understanding the pivotal elements of relationships, incorporating elements of humor and sentiment, while ensuring the message is engaging and concise [2].

This speech is not just a formality but a highlight of the wedding reception, serving to strengthen the ties between the couple and their communities. By weaving together anecdotes and well-wishes, the speaker captures the essence of the wedding ceremony, offering insights into the depth of the friendship and the couple’s journey. To excel, preparation is key; practicing the speech will foster confidence and ensure a heartfelt delivery that touches everyone present [1] [2].

Understanding Your Audience

Understanding your audience is paramount when delivering the best friend wedding speech . Here are some key points to consider:

  • Begin with a captivating statement or question to grab attention.
  • Introduce yourself and your relationship to the couple, setting the stage for your speech.
  • Select a few pivotal points about the couple’s journey and illustrate them with concise stories, aiming for a speech duration of 3-5 minutes.
  • Avoid inside jokes or references that might alienate parts of the audience. Instead, aim for universal appeal by passing the “Grandma Test” and “Friend Test,” ensuring the content resonates with everyone from close friends to distant relatives.
  • Adjust your speech’s tone to reflect the couple’s personality, using descriptors like inspirational or genuine.
  • Incorporate humor and  storytelling  to keep the audience engaged, but ensure jokes are appropriate for all ages and backgrounds.
  • Tailor your anecdotes and humor to the audience, considering their relationship to the couple and cultural background, avoiding controversial topics.

By keeping these points in mind, you can craft a speech that not only honors the couple but also connects with the entire audience, making the special occasion even more memorable.

Structuring Your Speech for Impact

To craft a best friend wedding speech that leaves a lasting impact, follow these structured steps:

  • Begin with a compelling statement or question to immediately engage the audience.
  • Introduce yourself succinctly, highlighting your connection to the couple.
  • Personal Anecdotes : Choose 1-3 qualities of the couple you admire, illustrating each with a brief, memorable story. This personalizes your speech and makes it relatable.
  • Humor and Respect : Incorporate humor thoughtfully, ensuring it’s appropriate and respectful. Allow pauses for laughter and reflection, enhancing the speech’s pacing.
  • Future Wishes : Share your hopes and wishes for the couple’s future, reinforcing the speech’s heartfelt nature.
  • Wrap up by summarizing your affection and hopes for the couple in a few sentences.
  • Lead into a toast, inviting the audience to raise their glasses in celebration of the couple’s love and future together.

Remember, preparation is key. Start early, consult with the couple, and practice regularly to refine your delivery. Keep your speech within the 3-5 minute sweet spot to maintain audience engagement.

Incorporating Humor and Sentiments

Incorporating humor into a best friend wedding speech can transform it from merely memorable to utterly unforgettable. Here’s how to strike the perfect balance between laughter and sentiment:

  • Funny Opening Lines : Kick off with a light-hearted jest such as, “Hi everyone, I’m (name), and before you ask, yes, I  am  single,” to immediately engage your audience.
  • Roasts and Toasts : Share amusing, yet affectionate stories that playfully ‘roast’ the bride or groom, always keeping their comfort in mind. Wrap up with a heartfelt toast, using clever lines like, “Here’s to you and here’s to me, may we never disagree. But if we do, here’s to me, and to hell with you.”
  • Genuine Praise : Sincerely compliment the couple, highlighting traits and shared qualities that make them perfect for each other.
  • Personal Stories : Opt for specific anecdotes that showcase the couple’s admirable characteristics or funny quirks. This personal touch adds depth and authenticity to your speech.
  • Be Yourself : Authenticity resonates. If humor is your strength, lean into it; if not, focus on sincerity.
  • Engage the Audience : Maintain eye contact and use open body language to foster a connection, making your speech more impactful and relatable.

By blending humor with heartfelt sentiments and delivering with confidence, your speech will not only entertain but also deeply touch the hearts of the newlyweds and their guests.

Personal Stories that Shine

Incorporating personal stories into your best friend’s wedding speech can significantly enhance its impact, making it memorable and relatable. Here are some guidelines and examples to help you craft a speech that truly shines:

  • Share anecdotes that highlight the strength and depth of your friendship. For instance, recount a time when your friend went out of their way to support you during a tough period, or share a funny mishap that you both laugh about to this day.
  • Express gratitude for their presence in your life, emphasizing how their friendship has positively shaped you.
  • Discuss qualities of each individual and how they complement each other, perhaps mentioning how one’s meticulous planning perfectly balances the other’s spontaneous nature.
  • Share a moment that encapsulates their love story, like the time they coordinated a surprise visit to cheer up a mutual friend, showcasing their teamwork and compassion.
  • Reflect on your journey with your best friend, from how you met to a memorable trip you took together. Highlight moments where their actions or words left a lasting impact on you.
  • Include the new spouse by sharing your initial impressions or a touching gesture they made that affirmed why they are the perfect match for your best friend.

Remember, the key to a heartfelt speech is authenticity. Use your own words, keep it clean and respectful, and practice reading aloud to ensure a natural delivery.

Delivering Your Speech with Confidence

Delivering a best friend wedding speech with confidence is about preparation, practice, and presentation. Here are essential tips to help you shine on the big day:

  • Gather memories and stories that highlight your friendship and the couple’s journey.
  • Practice your speech out loud, aiming for 8-10 minutes. Use a timer to keep track.
  • Record yourself to refine pacing and intonation.
  • Rehearse in front of a small audience for feedback.
  • Print your speech on cue cards for easy reference.
  • Hold cards at chest level, maintaining eye contact with the audience.

What is a Wedding Toast?

A wedding toast is a group of words that are said to express happiness and wish or bless the married couple at their wedding reception or rehearsal dinners. After a wedding toast all of the attendees of the wedding raise a toast and take a sip of their beverage to show their agreement. Wedding toasts are a great way to express your feelings towards the newlyweds. A well-crafted wedding toast strikes a perfect balance between humour and emotion while being concise and memorable, ensuring it serves as a wonderful conclusion to your speech.

Take a look at the order of wedding toast…

The Order of Toasts

Usually, wedding toasts are given both on the rehearsal dinner and the receptions. The ones given on rehearsal dinners are typically informal. However, the wedding toasts at the reception should be sweet, short, and crisp. Here is the order of toasts:

Speech

Traditionally, the best man should deliver the first toast. It is okay is only the best man is giving the toast. However, it is likely that others will also want to convey their joy to the newly married couple. In addition to the best man, the maid of honour may also have the opportunity to offer a toast.

Next, the groom, bride, or both of them together may raise a toast to each other. They can then raise their glasses to acknowledge and express gratitude to the wedding party and guests for being a part of their special day.

The parents follow the bride and groom. If the bride’s parents host the wedding, they have the honour of speaking first. They should begin by toasting the newlyweds and the groom’s parents while also extending a warm welcome to all the guests.

Guide To Give Memorable Wedding Toasts

To give a memorable wedding toast, you need to be sincere and genuine in expressing your feelings towards the newlyweds. Your speech should reflect on how you are related to the couple, and it should create lasting memories for everyone.

Here’s how you should prepare a short, precise, and memorable wedding toast speech.

●  STEP 1: Introduce yourself

The first and foremost step to writing a memorable wedding toast is to introduce yourself. You should briefly explain to everyone present who you are and your relationship with the newlyweds. This way, the guests will know why you have been appointed to give a toast speech.

●  STEP 2: Know Your Audience

It’s also important for you to know your audience if you have been appointed to give a wedding toast speech. You should consider the speech that will go well with the couple and wedding guests.

●  STEP 3: Add a touch of humour to your toast speech

When writing your speech, make sure to include funny words or incidents that are related to the couple. This will help to lighten up everyone’s mood while giving your speech. Make sure to avoid using insulting or humiliating words, phrases, or stories in your wedding toast speech. You should avoid making any comment that could embarrass the couple or guests.

●  STEP 4: Structure and Length

The structure and length of your wedding toast should be short and concise. Don’t make a very lengthy speech; rather, aim to give a toast that will last for just 2-3 minutes.

●  STEP 5: Practice and Rehearse

Rehearse your toast continuously in order to familiarise yourself with the content you have written. Make sure you do this, especially if you’re a shy person who can’t stand before a crowd. This will help you build your confidence and leave a lasting impression on the couple and their guest on the wedding day.

●  STEP 6: Express Gratitude

Show gratitude to the couple for giving you the opportunity and for making you witness their special day. Also, remember to thank every guest who has graced the occasion with their presence.

●  STEP 7: Raise a Toast

Finally, give your best wishes to the couple as you invite everyone to raise their glasses of wine. Wish newlyweds a lifetime of happiness and love.

●  STEP 8: Enjoy!

That’s all! The whole process of giving a wedding speech takes only 2 – 3 minutes in all. Following these tips will help you give an excellent wedding toast at your friend’s, sister’s, or anybody else’s wedding.

How To Write A Perfect Speech For Your Best Friend’s Wedding

It is a great honor for a friend to ask you to make a speech at his wedding. What they are saying is that they trust you to make the moment memorable. Here are professional writers for hire to help you make the speech unforgettable.

speech for your best friend's wedding

Whether you are writing the speech or have hired a professional writer, you have to develop the outline. The work of the writer is to present your ideas in an interesting manner to spice the wedding. The writers will give you confidence to make the presentation especially if you are doubtful of writing a good speech.

Here are the best insights on how to write a perfect wedding speech for your friend’s occasion.

Know your friend

Out of the tens of guests invited for the reception, you have the special privilege of speaking. The friend trusts that you know him well enough to capture his words to his guest. Notice that many brides and grooms do not speak. They leave you to talk on their behalf. You must have an idea of what the bride or the groom may want to say on his special occasion.

Being a wedding, you are not going to talk about the latest technology innovations or visit to Mars. Rather, your content will center on the couple. Know what they like, their journey of love, aspiration for the future, and overall personality. It helps you to capture their thoughts in a humorous manner. Specifically, you will avoid giving a generic speech that cannot relate to the friends or their life.

Consider the audience

A wedding reception features a lot of people. There are parents, family members, workmates, former schoolmates, mentors, and mentees, among others. You may even be making your speech in the middle of a church service. Review the guest list before preparing the speech. It will help you to make a befitting presentation.

The audience will dictate the words you use. While you might have a deep relationship with the friend to the point of knowing his personal life, some of the details might not be palatable to the audience. Further, remember that the audience is looking for a memorable moment from your presentation. The speech must, therefore, resonate with their expectations.

Make it personal

Avoid a generic speech. Address your friend based on what you know in his past and expectations of the future. Mention incidents your friend can remember, as long as they are not embarrassing.

A personal speech helps the guests to understand the side of your friend that they may not know. Remember that you were chosen because you are unique and close. Share that experience with the family, colleagues, and friends of the friend. Such incidents ignite dialogues and will be remembered long after the wedding is over.

It’s about the couple

Some friends are only known to one party and not the other. Do not run the risk of focusing on your friend and ignoring his or her spouse. By the time you were chosen, you must know the bond that exists between the two. Dig into their history to find points of intersection. Talk about common things so that one does not feel left out by the other.

speech for your best friend's wedding

Sometimes it is difficult to know as much about one as you know about the other. Reflect what you know on to his or her partner. For instance, you may say that your man loves dancing, so you should also practice to keep the marriage happy. In such a case, whether you know that the partner can dance or not is irrelevant. You have looped the partner into the dancing life of the man.

Use note cards

The best wedding speeches are not read. They are impromptu. However, you can run out of ideas or fail to deliver a crucial point. Note cards will keep you on track. Write the main points on a card and only refer to the notes when talking and make your improvised speech from these guides.

Do not go into details with the cards. You may leave them with a friend to remember the occasion. Make the speech as lively as possible.

Keep it short and sweet

A wedding reception is not a chance to present an academic paper. You are only allocated a few minutes to pass a message and allow the program to continue. It is not a time to give the life history of the friend or the spouse. Choose a few words that will capture the mood of the day and give your friend something to remember about his marriage.

A wedding speech must end on a high. People should not be compelled to clap. They should clap involuntarily as you leave the podium. Add a spice of fun to the speech so that you bring down the roof by the time you finish the speech.

Maid of Honor – Examples of Wedding Speeches for Your Best Friend

Maid of Honor Speech Examples

Sample Speech 1

Excuse me, everyone. I’d like to take a few moments to talk to you about my best friend Jennifer and her new husband Mark.

I’ve been Jennifer’s best friend since we were little girls. I remember how we used to play dress-up and dream of the weddings we would have when we were grown up. I’m sure that the wedding that has taken place here today far surpasses the childhood dreams I know Jennifer had about her big day!

Jennifer is one of the most loving, caring and kind people I’ve ever met. She has a fantastic sense of humor and a sharp wit — so look out, Mark! All kidding aside, though, I couldn’t be happier to honor my best friend on her wedding day.

Jennifer and Mark, I wish you all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years of love and togetherness ahead for you.

Let’s all raise our glasses to Jennifer and Mark, and wish them a lifetime of love and joy!

Sample Speech 2

Good evening, everyone! I’d like to propose a toast to the bride and groom. Jennifer, as your best friend, I couldn’t be happier to celebrate this day with you. You’ve always been there for me throughout the years, and now I am honored to stand by your side today.

When Jennifer began dating Mark, I could tell their relationship would be more than just a casual thing. I could tell right away that there was something special there, something that we all want to find for ourselves — true love.

Mark, I know you will love and care for Jennifer for the rest of her life. I couldn’t wish for a better groom for my best friend!

In the spirit of love and unity, let’s toast the bride and groom and wish them all the happiness they deserve!

Open With a Joke

@thatawkwardteacher how to make a bride instantly regret making you her maid of honor #moh #mohspeech #weddingtiktok #wedding #foryou #fyp #foryoupage ♬ original sound - Cassie

There's no better way to break the ice than with a lighthearted joke to get the crowd warmed up. You don't have to be a standup comedian to think of a groundbreaking joke either. Instead, steal a line from this maid of honor speech , which starts off with an apology (and a hair flip) for the guests who don't have the privilege of knowing the speaker personally. She then pretends to give a roast instead of a toast, further solidifying this as one of our favorite wedding speech ideas.

Give Honest Advice

@yourstorytold.co someone get her a Netflix special #weddingtiktok #singleaf #weddingfails #maidofhonorspeech #livingthedream #funnywomen #funnywomenoftiktok ♬ You Need To Calm Down - Taylor Swift

Read any wedding speech writing guide and you'll probably be encouraged to share a few words of wisdom with the newlyweds. But, if you aren't married yourself or you don't feel like an expert on all things love, you aren't out of luck. Take a cue from this maid of honor, who candidly (and hilariously) jokes about being single at the wedding.

Find your kind of venue

Take a "humble" approach.

Not sure what to write for your wedding speech? We love this best man's approach, who gives himself a pat on the back for introducing the happy couple. After all, no one would be at the wedding without him, so it's only fair that he gets a round of applause too.

Plan a Surprise Flash Mob

The fun doesn't have to stop when your speech ends. If you're looking for speech examples that'll really wow the crowd, enlist the help of your fellow bridesmaids and groomsmen to surprise the couple with a flash mob at the wedding reception. This is particularly appropriate for those looking for fun ideas instead of wedding speeches—if public speaking makes you nervous, keep the talking to a minimum and let the flash mob take over.

We're obsessed with this sweet wedding officiant speech idea. Making a cheeky joke at the start of the ceremony sets the tone for the rest of the event, but it also allows the couple to relax and shed any last-minute nerves before they say their wedding vows.

This wedding speech is perfect for siblings. If you're looking for wedding speech ideas for your sister or brother, give your parents a shoutout in your toast like this maid of honor did.

Speak to Your Best Friend's Spouse

@newenglandcreative Speech of the century 😭 #wedding #weddingvideographer #weddingvideo #engaged #weddingdress #weddingvibes #weddingplanner #speech #love ♬ Worship Instrumental - Instrumental - Adrian Jonathan

If you're the maid of honor, you've probably been friends with the bride for a long time. And, as a result, you've likely seen the progression of the couple's relationship from the start. For a unique wedding speech idea for your best friend, consider speaking directly to their spouse. Talk about how it feels to see them grow together, and share what it's like to watch your friend be loved so genuinely. This creative tactic is a unique way to honor their relationship in front of loved ones.

Be Sentimental

@newenglandcreative Speech of the century from bride's dad 😭 Wait for it 😢 #wedding #weddingspeech #weddingdress #weddingplanner #speech #tears #imnotcryingyouare #dad ♬ See You Again (Piano Arrangement) - Alexandre Pachabezian

We dare you to watch this father of the bride speech without shedding a tear. Emulate this dad's speaking style in your own toast—writing a vulnerable and honest message will resonate with the crowd.

Reminisce on Your Friendship

@emerald_media When your BFF gives a speech.. #weddingvideo #weddingspeech #emotionalweddingmoments #bffgoals #fyp #viral #bestfriends ♬ original sound - emeraldmediaservices

As the maid of honor or the best man, you've probably been thinking about your toast long before the wedding day. We recommend digging back into the early memories of your friendship, as this maid of honor did, to share personal anecdotes and memories that illustrate your close relationship with the couple.

Give a Toast to Your Child's Spouse

@danleighvideography Bride's dad passed away before they got married. Father of the groom moves her to tears during his speech #trynottocry #imnotcryingyouare #fatherinlaw ♬ She's Somebody's Daughter (The Wedding Version) - Drew Baldridge

Consider this one of our favorite examples of a father of the groom speech. Since the bride's father passed away before the wedding, the groom's dad took over both speech duties and welcomed his son's new wife into their family.

Allot Time for a Couple's Toast

Now, it's common for the newlyweds to take the floor for a speech of their own. We love this bride's great wedding toast (and tasteful roast) to her future husband, who originally didn't think they'd be a good match.

Wedding Officiant Speech Ideas For A Friend’s Wedding + Templates

Short And Sweet Wedding Ceremony Template

Playful and humorous wedding ceremony template, how to prepare.

speech for your best friend's wedding

  • Meet with the couple beforehand to get an idea of what they expect or wish to see at their ceremony. Be sure to discuss the length, tone and order of your speech. Whether they prefer a short ceremony, a secular officiant script or want to add their own creative spin, you’ll be prepared to provide that for them.
  • Start writing your speech as early as possible and ask the couple for feedback. It’s always best to have a third party review your speech for any errors.
  • Ask the couple for any rules they wish to implement during the ceremony. They may want to ask guests to silence their phones or refrain from taking too many photos.
  • Establish the order of the ceremony with the couple. Some couples opt to sign legal documents at the ceremony in front of their friends and family, while others prefer to sign them in private, either before or after the ceremony. Make sure you know how they wish to proceed with this component of their wedding.
  • Confirm that the marriage license is valid. States have different laws regarding the window of time a license is valid and can be signed.
  • Be prepared for how and when to submit legal documents. Once the license has been verified, complete all relevant fields. On their wedding day, make sure all required parties have signed including yourself, the couple and witnesses.
  • Be aware of any filing deadlines in your state and return the license to its issuance office appropriately. In many states, the couple can return the marriage license themselves.

From An Acquaintance

Dos and Don’ts

  • Do include a short and sweet anecdote about their love story. If you know how they met or got engaged, weave it into the speech to make it unique to the couple.
  • Don’t get off topic. Avoid going on a tangent by keeping your script short and to the point.
  • Do practice your speech and the names of important family members. Depending on the style of the wedding, some speeches thank or mention parents and grandparents of the couple so you want to make sure you’ve got their names down.
  • Don’t go heavy on the jokes. Humor is great but when in doubt, keep it light. If you don’t know the family very well, some jokes may fall flat or not go over well with certain family members.
  • Do type up a nice copy of your speech for the couple to keep afterward.

groom and groomsmen

  • Do include an endearing short story about the bride and/or groom. Use this story to add a little playfulness to your speech and pull at the heartstrings of friends and family.
  • Don’t tell embarrassing stories about the bride or groom. Keep your stories light and focused on their love for one another.
  • Do write a unique introduction. Since you know them personally, give yourself the freedom to stray from the traditional wedding ceremony introductions.
  • Don’t go into too much detail. Although you know the couple well, they may have invited acquaintances and distant friends to the ceremony so keep your speech concise.
  • Do type up a nice copy of your speech for the couple to keep afterward. A great wedding gift idea would be a framed print of their vows they can cherish for years to come.

My Best Friend’s Wedding Speech

By Ng Chin Leng

speech for your best friend's wedding

Looking for some wedding speech samples before you write your own? Take a leaf from this real groom’s wedding speech!

“Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you for gracing this occasion with your presence here today. It really means a lot to us to have so many family and friends come and give us your congratulations and your blessings. We are really touched and honoured. Thank you again for coming.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words to just some of you who have made a difference in my life.

My old friends, Chin Leng, Kevin, Gerald, Jeremy, Yee Siang, and Daniel.

Each one of you entered my life at just the right time, so that at every point in my life, from childhood to university, I managed to find that one good friend to hang out with, to pour out my soul to, and to lean on. You guys are the best friends a boy and a man could ever have.

To Cheng, Michelle, Leigh, Sam, and Pam, Val’s friends and bridesmaids.

Thank you for contributing so much to this wedding, and thank you as well, for being my friends and not just knowing me as Val’s other half.

To my Aunty Wah Wan and my Uncle Chang Choon,

Thank you for your love, care, and encouragement, especially when I had the accident with my eyes just before my A levels.

I have always relied on your strength of character, your faith, and your goodness and I will always cherish the times we spent together, especially when I was a little kid, and you tried to be the brother and sister to me that I never had.

Who through the many little things that he does, and thinks that I do not notice, but I do, shows that underneath that gruff exterior is a man who loves me dearly.

And to you both, thank you for showing me by example and through your love what it takes to make a good marriage and be good parents.

To Val’s parents,

Thank you for bringing up such an amazing woman. I love your daughter and I will do everything in my power to live up to your hopes and dreams for her.

And to you Valerie,

Thank you for loving me as you do, unconditionally, despite knowing me through and through, thank you, Val, for saying “Yes” and agreeing to spend your life with me. I am without doubt the luckiest man in the world.

People ask me all the time: How do you know that Valerie’s the one for you? How do you know?

Well, for me the answer is that it’s a gradual process of different degrees of illumination over time.

I first thought that maybe she was the one when I saw her one day in the NUS canteen and her hair was tied up with a maroon hairband and she smiled, and it took my breath away.

I first thought that she quite possibly was the one when she brought me to the wake of the mother of this old clerk who worked in her office, and there was no one else there so she sat down and talked to this old man for an hour and I saw the compassion in her face.

I first thought that she was very likely to be the one when I was going through a period when everything I did seemed to go wrong and she told me that the only thing that I ever needed to do right was to love her.

I first thought that she was probably the one when once she was feeling down and I did something to surprise her and when she threw her arms around me I realised that her happiness meant more to me than anything else in this world.

And I knew for sure that she was the one when in the middle of proposing to her I suddenly lost confidence and I asked in a moment of self doubt, “Could you marry me?” instead of “Will you marry me?” and she took me by my shoulders, looked me squarely in the eyes, and said in a clear, firm voice, “I will.”

And that ladies and gentlemen, is how I knew then and how I know now.

Thank you.”

Ask Amy: I’m the maid of honor for my best friend’s wedding but she didn’t invite my boyfriend

  • Published: Mar. 30, 2024, 2:00 a.m.

ask-amy-maid-20240330

In today's Ask Amy column, Amy Dickinson responds to a maid of honor who is upset her boyfriend wasn't invited to her best friend's wedding. Dreamstime

  • Amy Dickinson

Dear Amy: I am the “maid of honor” for my best friend’s wedding, which is happening this summer.

It’s a big job and I have done my very best to step up in all of the expected ways. Like other people who have faced this demanding role, it can strain a friendship – but my friendship with “Chloe” (the bride) has survived just fine.

So far, anyway.

Last week, Chloe texted me to say that she has just sent out the invitations and that “William,” my very steady boyfriend of several years, has not been invited.

She texted me that she feels terrible about this, but this was because of “serious space constraints.” She has planned for 125 guests at the reception.

Chloe has met William several times (we live out of state), and she knows that we live together.

I’m completely shocked by this exclusion, and I don’t know how to respond.

Dear Mad: One of the most basic guidelines concerning wedding invitations is that engaged couples, long-time partners, and couples living together should be invited as a couple.

“Chloe” might justify her rudeness by thinking that her attendants will be very busy on her wedding day, and because you won’t be able to spend much time with “William” during the ceremony and reception, she might as well exclude him.

My instinct is that this is yet one more sacrifice you are expected to make as her maid of honor. Some honor, right?

In terms of responding, I think you should be calm and very clear. Speak to her: “Chloe, I’m asking you to invite William to your wedding. I’m sorry that you feel pressured, but it’s the right thing to do. I have stepped up in many ways to make this day great for you, and I’d appreciate you finding the space for him.”

If she freaks out, don’t respond right away. Just wait quietly.

After a week or two, you should have an answer from her.

In my opinion, either way you do have an obligation to carry on with your role in the wedding, but the longer-term friendship might take a real hit.

How to Write a Heartfelt Letter to the Bride If You're Her Bridesmaid, Friend, or Family

A sincere note will make her wedding even more special.

speech for your best friend's wedding

In This Article

If you’re a bridesmaid, friend, or family member of the bride, you’re probably looking for ways to make the woman of the hour feel loved and celebrated on her wedding day. While buying her a gift and showering her with compliments are common—and definitely appreciated—ways to make her big day extra special, one of the most moving and heartfelt gestures is writing her a letter to read before she walks down the aisle.

Jotting down words of love, encouragement, and support to share with the bride is budget-friendly and easily doable—all you need is a piece of paper, a pen, and a place to reflect and write. Best of all, the payoff is extremely worthwhile: These touching remarks will make the bride feel seen and appreciated, and she’ll have a keepsake to treasure forever.

“There’s usually so much going on [on the wedding day], so it can be hard to keep track of everything everyone is saying to you, but you want to,” planner Manda Worthington explains. “You want to treasure all of the love and words of wisdom that you get from the people who mean the most, so to have a letter that you can look back on and read over and over again feels timeless and so impactful on a day as emotional as your wedding.”

  • Victoria Holland is the founder and principal planner and designer of Victoria Ann Events , a full-service wedding planning and design company in Los Angeles.

Whether you opt for a sweet and sentimental tone or one that’s funny and lighthearted, there are so many ways to make the bride feel loved through your words. If you’re unsure where to begin, we’ve created a comprehensive guide that will help you craft your note like a wordsmith. Ahead, how to write a letter to the bride.

What to Include in a Letter to the Bride

Typically, these heartfelt notes congratulate the bride before expressing well-wishes, words of love and support, personal memories, and advice. According to planner Victoria Holland, you can also convey your own feelings about the day and any other sentiments that will leave a lasting impact on her.

That said, the type of content that you include in your letter to the bride depends on the type of relationship you have with her and your personality. If you’re her maid of honor who has been her best friend since childhood, you’ll probably want to reminisce on the past, reflect on the qualities that you admire most about her, and tell her how much she means to you. If you’re the bride’s cousin who has a lighthearted and humorous rapport with the woman saying “I do,” you’ll want to fill your note with funny anecdotes and inside jokes.

How to Structure a Letter to the Bride

There isn’t any particular rule you need to follow in terms of the structure of the letter, according to Worthington. “I think it should just be from the heart and express whatever feels important for her to know,” she mentions. If following a certain format will help you organize your thoughts and write more effectively, though, you can follow the traditional flow of any school paper: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. This might look like opening the letter by congratulating the bride, sharing memories and stories in the following paragraph, and ending the note with well-wishes for the future. Then, remember to sign the letter and date it.

Tips for Writing a Letter to the Bride

Whether you’re in need of some guidance or you’re dealing with writer’s block, here are expert-approved tips to nail your letter to the bride.

Give Yourself Ample Time

If you wait until the last minute to jot down your thoughts, your letter probably won’t have as much substance. To craft a thoughtful, thorough message, Worthington suggests starting the writing process at least three weeks before the wedding. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to reflect on what you want to say and think of the right words to communicate that sentiment.

Write It by Hand

A handwritten letter is more personal and intimate than typing one on the computer, so make sure to write yours by hand. “It really adds to the specialness of the whole moment,” Holland says. Choose a nice piece of stationery and a pretty-colored pen to convey your words of love and appreciation.

Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

The content you include in your letter to the bride matters much more than the length, according to Holland. As long as you’ve communicated your message, it doesn’t matter whether your note is three sentences or three pages long. Just taking the time to write down your thoughts will surely have a meaningful impact.

Explain the Reason for the Letter

While you can always free-write, pinpointing exactly why you wanted to write the letter in the first place will give you important content to include in your note. Maybe you liked the idea of capturing your love in a tangible way, or perhaps you were set on giving her a unique and emotional gift that she will keep through the years.

Speak from the Heart

Since you care about the bride, you’re probably feeling the pressure to write an eloquent letter that perfectly reflects how you feel. But overthinking will only slow down the writing process and make you second-guess what you know to be true. Worthington recommends speaking from the heart and saying how you really feel. An authentic message, not a flawless one, will be more touching.

Embrace Humor

Don’t be afraid to add jokes and funny stories to your letter to the bride, especially if the two of you have humorous banter. Holland also mentions that making the bride smile or laugh will help calm any pre-wedding jitters.

An Example of a Letter to the Bride

Need some inspiration for your letter to the bride? Here’s an example that will get your creative juices flowing.

Dear Grace,

I can’t believe you’re getting married! Congratulations! I’m so happy that you found your person, and I’m so incredibly grateful that I get to be a part of your special day.

I still remember the day we first met. I was the new girl in school, uncertain about this transition and afraid that I would have to walk the halls alone. As I entered my first class, you immediately gave me a warm smile, introduced yourself, and cracked a joke about the teacher. My nerves quickly melted away, and I knew I wouldn’t have to worry anymore. You made me feel welcome and comfortable from the start, and your kindness and warmth have never faltered. Josh is a lucky guy!

Ever since then, we’ve been attached at the hip, laughing until our ribs hurt, polishing off pints of Ben & Jerry’s, and spending endless hours on FaceTime. You’ve been there for me for every big moment in my life, from starting college to moving into my apartment, and I’m so glad that I get to return the favor and be a part of this one for you. Here’s to many more memories as you start this new chapter as a newlywed!

Your best friend,
