When Advertising is a Waste of Resources

Money going down the sink and a airplane flying signage

Beware of “pouring money down the advertising hole!” Tailor your advertising and promotions to your current and prospective customers. Evaluate the results so you don’t keep spending money on ads or promotional campaigns that aren’t working.

Ask your customers where they saw your ad. This can be done by “pretesting” by simply asking family or friends what they think of your ad before you run it. Tabulate sales and try to make a judgment as to how many of the sales resulted from the advertisement. If it doesn’t work, don’t repeat it.

Before spending money on advertising, utilize all the free publicity that’s available, such as press releases and feature stories. A story written about your product and published in the local newspaper can be worth hundreds of dollars. An industry rule-of-thumb is that editorial coverage is seven times as valuable as paid coverage.

As life is getting faster, people have a shortage of time due to entertainment, social activities, etc. Therefore, it is mandatory to communicate with potential customers in a world full of competition and variety. Advertising plays an essential role in reaching customers and serves as a source of interaction or communication with potential customers (Dyer, 2015). Hence, it is in the best interest of businesses to invest their resources wisely in advertising.

There are speculations that advertising is expensive or wastage of resources, as it often fails to drive expected sales. However, considering advertising a wastage of resources is incorrect. Whereas, if a business outlaws the use of resources in advertising, there is a chance of losing a fair amount of sales with possibilities of a business closure.

Advertising is a well-versed use of resources as it helps promote the brand and reach new people, people who interacted with the brand, or those interested in similar products (Hamlett, 2019). Advertising helps businesses attract people and convince them to buy a product even if they don’t need it. According to research conducted by Shopify dropshipping experts interviewed by CNBC, more than 60% of customers who use social media buy a product without any prior intention of buying while opening the app, only due to social media ads.

How to avoid resources wastage in advertisement?

Short-term advertising strategies usually yield no results. Advertising is a process of interacting with your prospective clients regularly. And it requires a lot of effort on the side of seller or business stakeholders to interact with their prospective clients regularly. Therefore, a proper strategy should be devised before spending a dime on advertising. Digital marketing and social media marketing are gaining popularity these days.

Is Advertising a Waste of Resources

On average, people spend 70% more time on social media platforms than on TV and Newspaper combined. The trend in youth is as high as 90% compared to elders. Thus it is feasible to invest time in earning all the free marketing and relation-building platforms available online like, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Once you are familiar with the system, invest your resources in the advertisement or hire a  professional website management  company at a low price.

Advertising is a waste of resources in developing countries

It is often considered that advertising is a waste of resources in developing countries. However, it is a waste of resources if and only if the strategy is not according to the local market and public orientations. It is obvious that advertising strategies have to be different for different areas, communities, and customer-type. And only a comprehensive marketing strategy can bring favorable results.

Chapter 11: Advertising Industry

61 The role of advertising in society

Advertising is the paid promotion that uses strategy and messaging about the benefits of a product or service to influence a target audience’s attitudes and/or behaviors. Between online, television, radio, and print platforms, the average American sees hundreds, even thousands of advertisements daily.

Although many consumers find them annoying, advertisements play a prominent role in shaping opinions about everything from products to politics. A Forbes article (2012) stated: “Advertising plays the same role in your media diet that vegetables play in your regular diet; most of us would prefer to skip that course and go straight to dessert. But, just like veggies, advertising plays an important role in sustaining a body; in this case, a diverse body of content” (para. 1). Advertising heavily supports many institutions, including news media outlets, the television industry, search engine companies, and social media websites. For example, advertising contributes up to 80 percent of revenue for newspapers and therefore is critical to maintaining the circulation of the press (Newspaper Association of America, 2014).

The advertising industry is also lucrative. According to eMarketer (2016), the United States spent approximately $190 billion on advertising in 2015. About a third of that figure went to television advertisements, and another third went to digital advertising. With its economic and cultural function in society, the advertising industry has an expansive reach.

We model the choice of firms competing in prices in a differentiated products market to bundle advertising messages with their goods in return for payment from advertisers. From the firms’ perspective, the potential to earn revenue from advertisers, makes advertising a “good”. However, because consumers in the product market dislike such advertising, the bundling dampens demand and in this sense is a “bad”. There is also a third role played by advertising, however. Since a firm that bundles advertisements with its good sells a less attractive good, it has to price more aggressively than one that does not do such bundling. Thus, bundling advertisements with the good can lead to more aggressive product pricing and thereby intensify product market competition. In this sense, advertising can make things “ugly”.
