What’s covered:, what is the purpose of the “why computer science” essay, elements of a good computer science essay, computer science essay example, where to get your essay edited.

You will encounter many essay prompts as you start applying to schools, but if you are intent on majoring in computer science or a related field, you will come across the “ Why Computer Science? ” essay archetype. It’s important that you know the importance behind this prompt and what constitutes a good response in order to make your essay stand out.

For more information on writing essays, check out CollegeVine’s extensive essay guides that include everything from general tips, to essay examples, to essay breakdowns that will help you write the essays for over 100 schools.

Colleges ask you to write a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay so you may communicate your passion for computer science, and demonstrate how it aligns with your personal and professional goals. Admissions committees want to see that you have a deep interest and commitment to the field, and that you have a vision for how a degree in computer science will propel your future aspirations.

The essay provides an opportunity to distinguish yourself from other applicants. It’s your chance to showcase your understanding of the discipline, your experiences that sparked or deepened your interest in the field, and your ambitions for future study and career. You can detail how a computer science degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to make a meaningful contribution in this rapidly evolving field.

A well-crafted “ Why Computer Science? ” essay not only convinces the admissions committee of your enthusiasm and commitment to computer science, but also provides a glimpse of your ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively—essential skills for a  computer scientist.

The essay also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the specific computer science program at the college or university you are applying to. You can discuss how the program’s resources, faculty, curriculum, and culture align with your academic interests and career goals. A strong “ Why Computer Science? ” essay shows that you have done your research, and that you are applying to the program not just because you want to study computer science, but because you believe that this particular program is the best fit for you.

Writing an effective “ Why Computer Science ?” essay often requires a blend of two popular college essay archetypes: “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? “.

Explain “Why This Major?”

The “ Why This Major? ” essay is an opportunity for you to dig deep into your motivations and passions for studying Computer Science. It’s about sharing your ‘origin story’ of how your interest in Computer Science took root and blossomed. This part of your essay could recount an early experience with coding, a compelling Computer Science class you took, or a personal project that sparked your fascination.

What was the journey that led you to this major? Was it a particular incident, or did your interest evolve over time? Did you participate in related activities, like coding clubs, online courses, hackathons, or internships?

Importantly, this essay should also shed light on your future aspirations. How does your interest in Computer Science connect to your career goals? What kind of problems do you hope to solve with your degree?

The key for a strong “ Why This Major? ” essay is to make the reader understand your connection to the subject. This is done through explaining your fascination and love for computer science. What emotions do you feel when you are coding? How does it make you feel when you figure out the solution after hours of trying? What aspects of your personality shine when you are coding?

By addressing these questions, you can effectively demonstrate a deep, personal, and genuine connection with the major.

Emphasize “Why This College?”

The “ Why This College? ” component of the essay demonstrates your understanding of the specific university and its Computer Science program. This is where you show that you’ve done your homework about the college, and you know what resources it has to support your academic journey.

What unique opportunities does the university offer for Computer Science students? Are there particular courses, professors, research opportunities, or clubs that align with your interests? Perhaps there’s a study abroad program or an industry partnership that could give you a unique learning experience. Maybe the university has a particular teaching methodology that resonates with you.

Also, think about the larger university community. What aspects of the campus culture, community, location, or extracurricular opportunities enhance your interest in this college? Remember, this is not about general praises but about specific features that align with your goals. How will these resources and opportunities help you explore your interests further and achieve your career goals? How does the university’s vision and mission resonate with your own values and career aspirations?

It’s important when discussing the school’s resources that you always draw a connection between the opportunity and yourself. For example, don’t tell us you want to work with X professor because of their work pioneering regenerative AI. Go a step further and say because of your goal to develop AI surgeons for remote communities, learning how to strengthen AI feedback loops from X professor would bring you one step closer to achieving your dream.

By articulating your thoughts on these aspects, you demonstrate a strong alignment between the college and your academic goals, enhancing your appeal as a prospective student.

Demonstrate a Deep Understanding of Computer Science

As with a traditional “ Why This Major? ” essay, you must exhibit a deep and clear understanding of computer science. Discuss specific areas within the field that pique your interest and why. This could range from artificial intelligence to software development, or from data science to cybersecurity.

What’s important is to not just boast and say “ I have a strong grasp on cybersecurity ”, but instead use your knowledge to show your readers your passion: “ After being bombarded with cyber attack after cyber attack, I explained to my grandparents the concept of end-to-end encryption and how phishing was not the same as a peaceful afternoon on a lake. ”

Make it Fun!

Students make the mistake of thinking their college essays have to be serious and hyper-professional. While you don’t want to be throwing around slang and want to present yourself in a positive light, you shouldn’t feel like you’re not allowed to have fun with your essay. Let your personality shine and crack a few jokes.

You can, and should, also get creative with your essay. A great way to do this in a computer science essay is to incorporate lines of code or write the essay like you are writing out code.

Now we will go over a real “ Why Computer Science? ” essay a student submitted and explore what the essay did well, and where there is room for improvement.

Please note: Looking at examples of real essays students have submitted to colleges can be very beneficial to get inspiration for your essays. You should never copy or plagiarize from these examples when writing your own essays. Colleges can tell when an essay isn’t genuine and will not view students favorably if they plagiarized.

I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. Although my Fat Cat project seems simple now, it was the beginning of an enthusiastic passion for computer science. Four years and thousands of hours of programming later, that passion has grown into an intense desire to explore how computer science can serve society. Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads, I’m reminded of Uncle Ben’s advice to a young Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility”. Likewise, the need to ensure digital equality has skyrocketed with AI’s far-reaching presence in society; and I believe that digital fairness starts with equality in education.

The unique use of threads at the College of Computing perfectly matches my interests in AI and its potential use in education; the path of combined threads on Intelligence and People gives me the rare opportunity to delve deep into both areas. I’m particularly intrigued by the rich sets of both knowledge-based and data-driven intelligence courses, as I believe AI should not only show correlation of events, but also provide insight for why they occur.

In my four years as an enthusiastic online English tutor, I’ve worked hard to help students overcome both financial and technological obstacles in hopes of bringing quality education to people from diverse backgrounds. For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. I’d love to explore how to integrate AI technology into the teaching process to make education more available, affordable, and effective for people everywhere. And with the innumerable opportunities that Georgia Tech has to offer, I know that I will be able to go further here than anywhere else.

What the Essay Did Well

This essay perfectly accomplishes the two key parts of a “ Why Computer Science? ” essay: answering “ Why This Major? ” and “ Why This College? ”. Not to mention, we get a lot of insight into this student and what they care about beyond computer science, and a fun hook at the beginning.

Starting with the “ Why This Major? ” aspect of the response, this essay demonstrates what got the student into computer science, why they are passionate about the subject, and what their goals are. They show us their introduction to the world of CS with an engaging hook: “I held my breath and hit RUN. Yes! A plump white cat jumped out and began to catch the falling pizzas. ” We then see this is a core passion because they spent “ Four years and thousands of hours ,” coding.

The student shows us why they care about AI with the sentence, “ Every day, surrounded by technology that can recognize my face and recommend scarily-specific ads ,” which makes the topic personal by demonstrating their fear at AI’s capabilities. But, rather than let panic overwhelm them, the student calls upon Spiderman and tells us their goal of establishing digital equality through education. This provides a great basis for the rest of the essay, as it thoroughly explains the students motivations and goals, and demonstrates their appreciation for interdisciplinary topics.

Then, the essay shifts into answering “ Why This College? ”, which it does very well by honing in on a unique facet of Georgia Tech’s College of Computing: threads. This is a great example of how to provide depth to the school resources you mention. The student describes the two threads and not only why the combination is important to them, but how their previous experiences (i.e. online English tutor) correlate to the values of the thread: “ For this reason, I’m extremely excited by the many courses in the People thread that focus on education and human-centered technology. ”

What Could Be Improved

This essay does a good job covering the basics of the prompt, but it could be elevated with more nuance and detail. The biggest thing missing from this essay is a strong core to tie everything together. What do we mean by that? We want to see a common theme, anecdote, or motivation that is weaved throughout the entire essay to connect everything. Take the Spiderman quote for example. If this was expanded, it could have been the perfect core for this essay.

Underlying this student’s interest in AI is a passion for social justice, so they could have used the quote about power and responsibility to talk about existing injustices with AI and how once they have the power to create AI they will act responsibly and help affected communities. They are clearly passionate about equality of education, but there is a disconnect between education and AI that comes from a lack of detail. To strengthen the core of the essay, this student needs to include real-world examples of how AI is fostering inequities in education. This takes their essay from theoretical to practical.

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a novice trying your hand at college application essays, the review and editing process is crucial. Why Study Information Technology? 9 Reasons to Consider

Why Study Information Technology? 9 Reasons to Consider

When it’s time to pursue a new career and education path, the world is your oyster. That said, having a lot of options doesn’t always make an easy decision. At some point, you’re going to have to narrow down which field you want to pursue—and that will require some careful consideration.

Technology-related careers seem like an obvious avenue to consider, but you’re not convinced. Is working in IT really all it’s chalked up to be? Why study information technology anyway?

While cool-looking offices in Silicon Valley and the allure of “changing the world” with technology all sound great at a surface level, you want to be sure there’s truly some substance to go along with the sizzle that seems to surround this field.

Lucky for you, we’re breaking down data and speaking to experts in the field to bring you the truth about studying IT. With this top-notch information at your fingertips, you’ll be fully prepared to decide for yourself if an IT career is in your future.

9 Smart reasons for choosing to study IT

1. it’s a growing career field.

Most students are nervous about finding a job after graduation. While nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the job market, the employment in the IT field does appear to be on a strong trajectory. This job sector is projected to grow, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projecting that computer and IT occupations will grow by 11 percent from 2019 to 2029. That’s a projected 531,200 new jobs! 1

With the digital age constantly requiring new solutions for data storage, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and more, it’s no surprise that IT workers are expected to be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

2. IT pros can work in nearly any industry

Not only is there growing demand for IT professionals, but they also have the luxury of being able to work in nearly any industry. Technology powers businesses of all types, meaning that there’s a tech position waiting for you in fields as different as retail, finance, manufacturing and education.

While that might not seem like a big deal at face value, this provides potential job security. Recessions and relatively rough economic stretches are a fact of life. Having a broadly applicable and desirable skill set is a huge asset during times of uncertainty. IT skills provide options, and it never hurts to have options.

3. You're a left-brained thinker

4. it’s an innovative career field.

The tech field is constantly growing and changing. It needs employees who are excited to be on the cutting edge of innovation as it continues to evolve. If you’re easily bored with the status quo and constantly imagining ways things could be better or more efficient, you’d probably be a good fit for an IT career.

“The innovations in IT happen before anything else,” says Phil Strazzulla, founder of SelectSoftwareReviews . “Innovations in every other area of the tech field are driven by innovations in IT. Without those, the rest of the tech field would flounder.”

5. The work is rewarding

Surprised to see this on the list? Don’t be! Technology makes a big difference in entire industries as well as in the lives of individual people around the world. It can be rewarding to know that your everyday work is having a positive effect on others and contributing to the growing network of technology we all rely on.

“You get opportunities to bring leading-edge technology to life and make a difference in millions of people’s lives,” says Boris Abazher, founder and CEO of Triare . “Whichever role you choose, you will feel a part of this amazing process.”

6. Curiosity is celebrated

Not all career fields welcome employees who think outside the box. Lucky for you, IT isn’t one of them! Your natural sense of curiosity will be rewarded in the tech world, where you can use your drive for learning to help develop innovative new ideas.

“The people who thrive in IT are those whose curiosity outweighs all else. They're not satisfied when something works. They need to know why and how so they can recreate it over and over again,” Strazzulla says.

7. The job is never boring

Many of the tech pros we spoke with shared that the variety in their workdays is one of the best parts of the job. While the details will depend on the specific type of IT role you pursue, every day has the potential to come with new problems to solve, ideas to brainstorm and tools to put to use. This variety of work can help keep your days feeling fresh.

“IT will always challenge you to learn new things,” Abazher says. “Creativity and problem-solving are the cornerstones of this career.”

8. You can find work opportunities in a lot of locations

The IT industry was leading the way in remote work even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and turned many roles into work-from-home positions. “It is probably the most flexible career in terms of schedule. You can work on your own or in a team, whenever you like,” Abazher says.

It's not just remote work opportunities, either. Having a strong background in information technology will give you a foundation of knowledge that can be applied across the globe. “IT skills are universal in every country, unlike, for example, accountancy and law. Relocating is a common practice,” Abazher says.

9. You can get started with flexible education options

Unlike many other professions, the path to getting started or advancing in the IT field can be pretty flexible depending on your goals, career needs and existing education levels. Getting started can be a simple as earning an Information Technology Support Certificate or a Network Support Certificate that can be completed in as few as six months. 2 Offerings like these give you an opportunity to get started in the field as soon as possible, while providing an excellent foundation of education to build upon as you progress through an IT career.

IT isn’t too good to be true!

Why study information technology? It turns out there are plenty of solid reasons to consider pursuing an IT career. After all, not every field can boast about the positive job outlooks, high salary potentials and fulfilling, innovative roles IT offers.

Technological Advancement Essay

Searching for a technological advancement essay? Look no further! This simple essay on breakthrough technologies describes all the benefits and drawbacks of the issue.

Introduction

Why write about technology advancement, breakthrough technologies in various sectors, technological advancement essay faq.

Technological advancement has taken major strides in bringing liberation to the divergent human wants and gratifications. After keen observation, I have come to realize that technological advancement plays a critical role in solving the major crisis of food shortages in the modern world. In the state of Virginia during the 17th century, human labor was imperative due to the pressing need to grow enough food to serve the people in the community during the winter spell hence the need to hire slaves from Africa to work on their farms (Brush, 1988).

This has since changed partly due to the technological advancements over the years that have led to the replacement of human and animal labor with more efficient energy sources as wind power, hydroelectric and steam energies that ultimately led to a significant increase in productivity. Thus, the thesis statement for this essay is to analyze the impact of technological advancement on people’s lives from ancient times to the present modern world.

It is evident that technology is the backbone of the industrial revolution process that has occurred over the years and leads to a total overhaul from crude systems to modern efficient machinery. With this in mind, we cannot overlook the role that technology has played on the social and economic fronts of many societies hence the need to have a deeper insight and research on this particular topic. The transformation brought about by technological advancement has helped many societies in Africa and the world at large to alleviate poverty and improve their standards of living through the increased food supply and significant growth in the economy and this integrates with the research question: Is technology liberating?

The three academic disciplines from which this research has drawn insight from include: agriculture, sociology and communication sectors.

Technology Advancement in Agriculture

In the ancient world, the main source of power was human labor obtained mainly from slaves. In North America for example, during the early 17th century, most whites purchased slaves as a chief source of labor to work on their farms but with the emancipation proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln during the civil war of 1863 that declared all slaves to be set free from bondage, their masters had no choice but to source for another alternative source of labor.

This act spearheaded the advancement of the agricultural revolution, which was also boosted by the industrial revolution that led to the development of more efficient agricultural machinery that required very few workers and resulted in higher farm production. Examples of some of the medieval technologies used in the ancient world included: water wheel, four-field crop rotation system, the horse collar and selective breeding of livestock with good traits.

In 1750, engineer John Smeaton working on the water wheel significantly increased its efficiency hence boosting its productivity. It was during this period that technological advancement, revolution, and innovation in agriculture were at its peak and it led to the emergence of new farm machinery like cultivators, combine harvesters and mowers that were pulled by oxen, mules, and horses. These machines were later powered by steam energy than a more efficient diesel fuel that led to a remarkable increase in farm output (Kedar, 2009). Previously, the land was prepared by a man using traditional mattocks and hoes made from raw materials obtained locally like wood and scrap metals.

With the mechanization of agriculture, farmers could now make use of the machinery like combine harvesters and petrol powered tractors to prepare large acres of land within a short period with minimum input on human labor to clear, plow and plant on their expansive farms. Technology has led to hybridization, selective breeding and inbreeding in livestock to obtain or maintain all the good qualities in their animals as high milk production, quality wool production, quality meat production, and other desirable animal traits.

Robert Bakewell and Thomas Coke doing their research on selective breeding crossed Lincoln and Longhorn sheep, to produce a hybrid that exhibited all the good qualities of both Lincoln and Longhorn and was referred to as New Leicester variety. This has helped in alleviating the crisis of food shortages through maximization of farm output.

Technology Advancement in Everyday Lives

Technology has been indispensable in bettering the social lives of many people in society. Technological advancements have led to the development in infrastructure and social amenities which has in turn positively impacted on the general livelihood of many individuals. It was until the Roman era in the 18th century that good roads were constructed, during those days, slaves were also used to carry loads and farm produce from the farms to storage warehouses and vice versa. They also used canoes and boats to carry farm products from North America between the Appalachian Mountains and Mississippi River during the early periods of the 19th century.

During this period, the transport system was still archaic and underdeveloped and people found it difficult to navigate from one region to another or carry heavy luggage over long distances because of poor roads and crude modes of transport. The canals preceded the construction of railroads that marked the beginning of the industrial revolution and from there we had significant developments in the transport sector with the construction of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 and the subsequent construction of tarmac roads, sea canals and subway systems (Butler, 1996).

These developments made it easier for people to move around hence positively impacting on their social lives by enhancing communication, trade, and farming. This indirectly led to improved living standards as a result of the increased food supply by farmers and the development of business firms. Farmers could now effectively carry their farm inputs and fertilizers to the farm and farm products to the market without difficulties. Businesses also thrived because of the efficient transport system and in no time firms began proliferating from every sector of the economy. This enabled them to diversify their economic activities as they no longer depended on the agricultural sector for their daily provision but also ventured into the business sector within the community.

With the recent development in infrastructure, it paved the way to the development of social amenities as schools, hospitals, public toilets, shops and market centers that increased in number as more and more investors joined the market. These amenities played a critical role in the development of the economy and elevating the living standards of the people in the community as they could now easily access all the essential resources. Hence technology played a vital role in liberating the lives of many from the bondage of hunger and scarcity to a point of abundance and stable food supply.

Technology Advancement in Communication

Communication is the act of conveying information from one person to another either face to face or by means of a communication medium. According to Scruton (1996), during the ancient times, slaves used to communicate through hymns, quilts or underground railroads while others used drums to convey coded information since most had originated from Africa and drum beating was their cultural way of communicating. These primitive modes of communications were not very reliable as the information could at times be distorted or misinterpreted by the recipient leading to a communication breakdown.

During the ancient period, people used to communicate through messages carved on stone pillars but this type of communication had limitations as the recipients had to travel miles to receive them and the message could only be read within a certain reading range. Others like the American Indians used smoke to convey a particular message to the community while others used bonfires lit on hilltops but such signals were limited to conveying specific information like looming danger, war or victory.

Communication then developed to more elaborate form which included writing on portable materials like reeds and papyrus. This medium of communication was much more reliable than the earlier archaic communication system. With the emergence of technological advancement and innovations, the transmission of signals from one person to another through a more sophisticated medium like communication cables took center stage. In the early 1830s, the electrical communication system made significant progress in this industry as people could now get in touch through electronic devices like a telephone.

In the year 1833, scientists Carl Friedrich and Wilhelm Eduard Weber researching on the electric transmission devices, made use of the principle of “electromagnetic technology” that later acted as the fundamental basis or a prerequisite for the innovation of telephones (Williams, 1993). Subsequent experiments done by Alexander Bell and Thomas Watson worked to optimize its efficiency and could now be used for commercial purposes. This was later followed by other technological developments and innovations by telecommunication engineers and scientists that led to the production of the carbon microphone, telephone exchange, data storage devices, wireless phones, and computers.

At this point, we can only appreciate the technological advancements that the communication industry has taken overtime to come up with sophisticated and very efficient gadgets that can serve multiple purposes other than communication. Such progress in technology has acted as a remedy to the many communication snarl-ups that people in the ancient world had to contend with but now people can freely share information, ideas, thoughts, opinions, photos, video clips on very many communication platforms using the sophisticated devices and handsets.

For example, use of the internet on computers and mobile phones to share information and ideas across the globe hence making the world a small village and enabling the free flow of information that is objective and informative. Hence this technology could be used to positively impact the lives of people by making them more informed and educated.

In conclusion, technology has had quite a significant impact on people’s lives over the years by making life more bearable through the production of efficient systems that require little labor but produce a significantly high output. One significant finding from the above research is that African culture and tradition has been greatly revolutionized over the years from the archaic, crude and barbaric practices to sophisticated and more efficient processes through technological innovations and advancement. The introduction of western culture has worked to raise the living standards of many African communities that were previously languishing in hunger and poverty.

Why did you choose computer science? Sample answers & more

Computer science is one of the most popular study programs in the last fifteen years. And it likely won’t chance anytime soon. The demand for programmers, designers, testers, engineers and other IT professionals exceeds the supply , and as fresh graduate with a degree from computer science you won’t have a problem getting a job . Not many people can say the same about their study program. But is this a good enough reason to mention on your application , or in the school admission interview ? We will try to find the answer on the following lines.

First of all, there’s no shame in wanting to earn well, and to live a decent life. Money cannot buy happiness, but it is hard to live a happy life when bills are pressing you , and you have to count every cent to make sure you won’t end up on the street the next month. Secondly, the primary aim of any college studies is to allow you to apply for better jobs (in the given field of study). You can definitely refer to it in your answer. Having said that, good job with a high salary should not be your only reason . You should have other motives as well…

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this interesting question. I tried to include a variety of answers on my list–with a variety of reasons, including some unconventional responses . Go through them, pick one that resonates with you , and do not forget to read also my conclusion and final tips at the end of this post.

7 sample answers to “Why did you choose computer science as your course?” interview question

  • I just enjoy working on the computer more than anything else. I’ve been messing around with programming since I was thirteen, designing simple websites and games. And I must say that I’ve done well, and enjoyed the process , and it motivated me to pursue my studies in the field, and eventually get a job with some interesting game studio or similar company. I believe that we should do for a living something we enjoy doing . And I enjoy programming, and bachelor in computer science was therefor an obvious choice.
  • First of all, I see a huge perspective in the field . The technology keeps evolving, with robotics and AI playing the prime in recent years. But I think we are far from the end, and the demand for motivated computer scientists will only continue to grow . This cannot be said about many other jobs with uncertain future. Robots will replace humans in certain professions, but it won’t be the case with people who design and program these robots . And that’s the side of the barricade where I’d like to stand once I finish the university. The degree in computer science is an important step on this journey.
  • Speaking honestly, money drives me more than anything else . Just look at the 10 richest companies in the US, or 10 richest men. Most of them come from technological background . And I also want to earn well, so why not eating my fraction of this juicy pie ? Of course, I know the road ahead is long, and I most likely won’t become the next Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. But I want to leave my mark in the world , and I definitely want to study computer science, and one day start my own business in the field .
  • I just find the field a great match for my introverted personality and my analytical skills . I’ve always excelled in Math, and I found it easy to write the code , for some school projects I’ve participated on. What’s more, though it may sound strange, I’ve always enjoyed the time I spent on my own , working on the computer, or watching documentaries. I just find IT a fitting field for my skills and personality, and cannot imagine studying anything else.
  • Computer science is, in my opinion, the job field with a great outlook . I’ve actually got some job offers already while studying at high school , because I helped to solve some coding puzzles on various online forums, and some people spotted a talent in me. But I do not want to work yet. I want to study, take my coding skills to another level, earn a degree from a great university like this one , and eventually get an inspiring job with one of the tech giants . That’s a plan, and I believe I can make it come true, if I study hard and dedicate myself to my mission.
  • I know it may sound strange, especially when I already have a degree from history . Computer science and history is not a typical combination. Life is unpredictable though, things do happen, and I find it hard to provide for my family with the job I have as a historian . Everyone know there’s huge potential in IT, and the salaries people in the field earn are second to none. I’d love to study online and earn my bachelor in computer science, to be able to apply for jobs with much better salaries, and improve the living conditions for me and my family. That’s why I chose this computer science course.
  • I have great GPA , and I definitely had a chance to apply for any study program, at almost any university. And it was not easy to choose, because I find many things interesting , and one can have an impact and thrive in many different jobs. But I’ve done the career test, and also talked a lot to the school counselor , trying to understand better what I expect from life , what I really excel in, and then match it with a fitting study program . Computer science ended up the best choice, and I am thrilled to apply with your amazing university.

Special Tip: What if I told you that you can practice your answers to ALL tricky interview questions you may get while trying to get to a computer science study program or secure the internship in the field, and get an immediate feedback from a life-like AI interview coach ? And that you can start doing it for free , and it is a lot of fun too? 🙂 Check out this page on our partner website , Real Mock Interviews, pick a question and start practicing for free , either on your mobile phone or on your computer. Enjoy and thank me later!

The question is one of your opportunities to praise the people in the admission committee

They ask why computer science, but you can actually answer two questions with your response–why computer science, and why their university . Give them some words of praise. You can even point our particular courses you are looking forward to, some stellar teachers who teach at their university, excellent campus and research opportunities , or anything else that caught your eye.

Remember that members of the admission committee are just people, like you or me. They also have their needs and dreams, and, just like everyone else, they enjoy when someone recognizes their good work . Praising the study program and study environment, you are in fact praising people who work at the college, because they are responsible for the study program, and for the successes of the school.

why choose information technology essay

Show your enthusiasm for the field, outline your future plans

The more specific you are in your answer, the better . Because having specific and tangible goal will help you navigate the tricky study program and pass the exams . Perhaps toy want to work at Google one day , working on tools billions of people use all around the world.

Or you want to start your own business –a game design studio, graphic design studio, or some innovative startup, working on the next big thing . Let your imagination soar. Things you say in the interviews do not have to come true–and nobody will remember what you said one day , when just trying to get in. But it definitely helps to have some career goals and plans which give a meaning to your studies, and will help you with your motivation in difficult times …

Ready to answer this one? I hope so! Do not forget to check also sample answers to other tricky questions you may face while trying to get to the college:

  • Why did you choose this university?
  • Does your academic record accurately reflect your capabilities?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to learn something new .

Why I Majored in Computer Science

Aldo ruiz parra ’25.

My first exposure to computer science was in high school through classes where I learned the basic foundations of computer science and block coding. This sparked my interest in exploring technology, leading me to join my high school’s robotics program. Arriving at Pomona College, I intended to explore different academic disciplines, but I kept computer science in the back of my mind. It was not until I finished Introduction to Computer Science during my first semester that I discovered that I wanted to major in computer science. The structure of the assignments and challenging course nature not only honed my problem-solving skills but also left me with an insatiable curiosity to delve deeper into the field.

One of the factors that led to my decision to major in computer science was the supportive faculty and the nurturing learning environment. Through office hours, I built meaningful connections with CS professors who provided valuable guidance and support throughout my academic journey. Through mentor sessions, I had the opportunity to connect with other students, both peers and mentors, which enriched my learning experience as we tackled problems together. These positive experiences and relationships allowed me to excel in classes and stay curious while learning advanced concepts in computer science.

Another aspect that attracted me to computer science was the diverse range of opportunities offered. The department arranges the curriculum in a way that strives to balance practical applications and theoretical foundations. There are a variety of electives, from AI to human-computer interaction, that allow us to explore our passions. My favorite part about the discipline is the various subfields and industries one can break into with computer science. Some of those subfields include cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, computer networking and much more. Whether you aspire to pursue your passions in the industry or graduate school, computer science equips you with a well-rounded education and problem-solving skills that prepares you well for a multitude of career opportunities.

Gloria Lee ’24

I was first introduced to computer science as a senior in high school. At that time, I did not think too much about it and brushed it off, thinking that it was not something I was meant to pursue. As a freshman at Pomona, I had a tough time deciding on my major. I purposely cast a wide net and took a variety of introductory classes in different fields during my first year. It was spring of that year when I took CS051 and was reintroduced to computer science. Despite the challenges of Zoom University, I looked forward to the long CS051 labs and enjoyed working through puzzles that invited me to think deeper. It was exciting to slowly learn how to translate the logical blobs in my head into something tangible on the screen.

This learning process would have never been as enjoyable without the immense support I received from the CS department along the way. What I love most about CS at Pomona is the collaborative community it cultivates and how easy it is for me to seek help (e.g., through learning communities, professors’ office hours, etc.). Professors and student mentors are always willing to answer my questions, big or small, and they are truly invested in helping us learn. Without this community, I honestly could not imagine myself as a CS major.

I love that learning CS in a liberal arts setting allows me greater flexibility to simultaneously explore other fields that interest me. I am also extremely grateful for the many opportunities I've had to explore CS through a variety of means. As a research assistant, I had the chance to work with Professor Eleanor Birrell in security and privacy research, and this helped me realize just how big CS is as a field, along with the many unique opportunities it offers. Studying CS abroad provided me with a broader perspective and gave me the wonderful opportunity to learn from professors around the world. Reflecting back, I am so grateful to have stumbled back upon CS during my first year, and I believe that all these experiences at Pomona will shape me to become a more critical and well-rounded developer in the future.

Information Technology Essay

Name: Mohammad yaseen Technology changes our society Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, accomplish goals or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. This new innovation comes with both advantage and disadvantages. In this brief lesson, students will try out a few innovative examples of communications technologies and explain how they transform patterns of sound or light into patterns of electricity. (Science for All Americans, p. 118.) Everybody has a specific task and weaknesses effect on our lives in general and so does technology. Technology may be very helpful but it can sometimes be very harmful. Communication is very complicated. Before communication technology innovation, face to face was the only way to interact which means communication with our whole body. When people had conversations, they could see understand the emotion of the communication from the tone of voice, facial gestures, body movement, eye movement. With communication technology, it seems as though different variables of communication are being taken out. For example, with a telephone, you can only hear the voice. There is no longer facial gestures, body movements, etc. Next, take texting. There is no longer voice; it is just a few words entered into a phone that can lead an individual to misunderstanding. These innovations like easy access internet, supercomputers and other electronic devices are becoming a fundamental usage in our daily life and have changed the way to gather information. This new technology is utilized in the curriculum and managed by teachers will have an important role to play in widening the resource and knowledge base for all students. Let’s All Take a Deep Breath About China

An illustration of a person’s head, showing different items pictured inside. They include a “B” from the Barbie logo, the face of Xi Jinping, a China flag, garlic and a globe showing China. The person is sweating and looking anxious.

By Rory Truex

Dr. Truex is an associate professor at Princeton University whose research focuses on Chinese authoritarianism.

The amygdala is a pair of neural clusters near the base of the brain that assesses danger and can help prompt a fight-or-flight response . A prolonged stress response may contribute to anxiety, which can cause people to perceive danger where there is none and obsess about worst-case scenarios.

America’s collective national body is suffering from a chronic case of China anxiety. Nearly anything with the word “Chinese” in front of it now triggers a fear response in our political system, muddling our ability to properly gauge and contextualize threats. This has led the U.S. government and American politicians to pursue policies grounded in repression and exclusion, mirroring the authoritarian system that they seek to combat.

Congress has moved to force the sale of TikTok , the Chinese-owned social media application; some states have sought restrictions on Chinese individuals or entities owning U.S. land and on Chinese researchers working in American universities ; and the federal government has barred certain Chinese technology firms from competing in our markets. These measures all have a national security rationale, and it is not my intention here to weigh the merits of every one. But collectively they are yielding a United States that is fundamentally more closed — and more like China in meaningful ways.

When you are constantly anxious, no threat is too small. In January, Rick Scott, a senator from Florida, introduced legislation that would ban imports of Chinese garlic, which he suggested could be a threat to U.S. national security , citing reports that it is fertilized with human sewage. In 2017, scientists at McGill University wrote there is no evidence that this is the case. Even if it was, it’s common practice to use human waste, known as “biosolids,” as fertilizer in many countries, including the United States.

More recently, Senator Tom Cotton and Representative Elise Stefanik introduced legislation that would bar the Department of Defense from contracting with Tutor.com, a U.S.-based tutoring company, on the grounds that it poses a threat to national security because it was purchased by Primavera Capital Group, an investment firm based in Hong Kong. Their argument is that this could give the Chinese government backdoor access to the tutoring sessions and personal information of American military personnel who use the firm’s service.

The legislation does not mention that Tutor.com’s student data is housed in the United States , that it volunteered for a security review by the federal Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and that it created additional levels of data security protection in coordination with the U.S. government. The bill also does not specify how exactly the Chinese government would get access to Tutor.com’s data or what use it would actually have for information on the tutoring sessions of U.S. military personnel.

Last summer, several Republican lawmakers cried foul over the “Barbie” movie because a world map briefly shown in the background of one scene included a dashed line. They took this as a reference to China’s “nine-dashed line,” which Beijing uses to buttress its disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea. According to Representative Jim Banks, this is “endangering our national security.” The map in the movie is clearly fantastical, had only eight dashes and bore no resemblance to China’s line. Even the Philippine government, which has for years been embroiled in territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea, dismissed the controversy and approved the movie’s domestic release.

Of course, the United States should actively confront President Xi Jinping of China about his repression at home and aggression abroad. As a scholar of China’s political system, I worry about how Mr. Xi has made his country even more authoritarian; about increasing human rights abuses in China, particularly those directed at the Uyghur population in Xinjiang ; about Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong, its threats toward Taiwan, its increasingly cozy relationship with Russia and its support for the war in Ukraine . America must remain alert to legitimate concerns about well-documented Chinese activities such as espionage and cyberattacks.

But should our policymakers really be focusing on Tutor.com, Chinese garlic or “Barbie”? Or should they concentrate on the more serious threats posed by China’s authoritarian system, or the many other issues that meaningfully affect the day-to-day lives of Americans?

Perhaps the most worrisome effect is that China anxiety is slowly creeping toward discrimination against Chinese Americans, a new “yellow peril.” We’ve already seen how an initiative begun during the Trump administration to target Chinese espionage led to unfair scrutiny of Chinese researchers and even Asian American government employees, leading to the program being terminated in 2022. And we saw how xenophobia during the pandemic triggered threats and attacks against Asian Americans. There also have been numerous reports of law enforcement officials interrogating Chinese students and researchers traveling to and from China on the grounds that they may be agents of the Chinese state. Again, this treatment — being brought in for questioning by the police or government officials — is something foreign scholars experience in China , where it is euphemistically referred to as “being invited for tea.”

Last year, state legislators in Texas proposed a bill that initially sought to prevent Chinese (as well as Iranian, North Korean and Russian) citizens and entities from buying land, homes or other real estate, citing concerns about the security of the food supply. Putting aside the fact that Chinese citizens are not the Chinese government, the actual amount of American farmland owned by Chinese entities is negligible — never exceeding 1 percent of farmland in any given American state as of 2021. The bill ultimately failed , but only after substantial pushback from the Chinese American community.

This China panic, also stirred up by both liberal and conservative U.S. media, may be influencing how average people perceive their fellow Americans of Chinese heritage. Michael Cerny, a fellow China researcher, and I recently surveyed over 2,500 Americans on the question of whether Chinese Americans who were born in the United States should be allowed to serve in the U.S. intelligence community. Roughly 27 percent said Chinese Americans’ access to classified information should be more limited than for other U.S. citizens, and 14 percent said they should be allowed no access at all.

This is overt racism, and while not the majority opinion, it is concerning that so many Americans are blurring the line between the Chinese government and people of Chinese ethnicity, mirroring the language of our politicians.

China is a formidable geopolitical rival. But there is no world in which garlic, “Barbie” or a tutoring site poses meaningful threats to American national security. Labeling them as such reveals a certain lack of seriousness in our policy discourse.

If the United States is to properly compete with China, it’s going to require healthy, balanced policymaking that protects U.S. national security without compromising core American values.

Let’s take a deep breath.
