10 Free Resources to Help Parents Facilitate Speech and Language at Home

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I feel that a good portion of my job is parent education and helping parents find fun and functional ways to work on the carryover of skills and facilitate speech and language skills at home. When I first started as a Speech-Language Pathologist, I typically assigned extra “homework” to my students that consisted of printed-out pages for drill work. Like many of us do, I learned the hard way that going the “homework” route may help some families but it does not help the majority of my families because time is valuable. Family time is even more valuable. What kind of memory would you prefer a child to walk away with – working on handouts and drills or spending time reading books, playing games, and cooking in the kitchen with their parent?

Check out these ten free resources that I found to help parents facilitate speech and language at home. Although there are 10 links below to downloadable resources, some of the links actually include more than one resource! Jackpot!

I have also added a PDF of the Process of Articulation Therapy pinwheel which includes an outline explaining this process. This is a great handout for SLPs to share with parents, teachers or other professionals. You may find more information on this process in my post, “The Process of Articulation Therapy.”

Early Intervention Parent Handouts for Speech & Language Development

02/23/2016 by Jenna 20 Comments

Parent education is such an important part of early intervention.  If you know me at all you know I love a good handout, so I’m excited to share with you some EI handouts for communication development. I try to remember that there is NO WAY a parent can remember all the advice I give, let alone share it with everyone else in the child’s life. It’s like when a I leave the orthopedic surgeon’s office and have already forgotten anything I didn’t write down. When you give a handout to stick on the fridge, the babysitter and grandma can also get a chance to learn the strategy!

Parent Handouts for EI

I shared some pictures recently of Early Intervention Parent Handouts and I can already tell you guys are needing these as much as I was! Right now, I work with about 10 preschoolers with significant delays and these parents needed handouts more typical of 1-3 year old communication levels. Their parents need to know what to work on besides imitating words! They need to know HOW to increase from 20 single words to 50. They need to know how to move from single words to 2-word phrases. The packet has six sheets for developmental norms in several different areas including pre-verbal skills, speech sounds, language, word count, and literacy.

Parent Handouts for EI

I also included seven of my most-used language strategies to eliciting or expanding language. These are all written in parent-friendly language.

You can grab the handouts in my store for instant download .

Parent Handouts for Early Intervention Speech and Language

I tried to pick language strategies that I recommend the most. I’d love to hear what other EI handouts you need! Leave me a comment and I’ll try to make sure they get covered in set #2!

To see all the Parent-Handouts I’ve made shop the Parent Handouts Category .

It’s like you’re reading my mind! Products I wish I had but never could have put together as clearly and adorably! I work with preschool but the EI tips are still totally relevant! I would love to see some higher level stuff for preschoolers in the next packet!

' src=

02/24/2016 at 5:48 pm

Thanks Hannah! You mean like the language strategies?

02/28/2016 at 4:47 pm

Yes! Set 1 seems perfect for my lower preschool kiddos. I would love handouts for the students working on answering questions, following directions, sequencing etc.

Hi Jenna. Would you ever consider having these and other parent handouts professionally translated into Spanish?

' src=

02/24/2016 at 4:56 pm

I was just thinking the same thing! I have a lot of Spanish speaking parents that would benefit from these!

02/24/2016 at 5:49 pm

I’m scared to let someone translate them because I can’t edit them myself! So I’d be publishing something under my name but not able to make sure it is done right! I’ll look around and see what I can find! I’d also have to do norms in spanish and I am not familiar with that!

02/24/2016 at 8:18 pm

Brian Goldstein is well known for his work with bilingual Spanish speaking children. He co-wrote Bilingual Language Development and Disorders in Spanish-English Speakers, Second Edition 2nd Edition. If you look him you can find some good evidence based information :o)

' src=

03/10/2016 at 1:16 pm

I want to second the request for Spanish translation. Is there a nearby university that could help? Some university programs have ELL programs for adults. That, or maybe a translation/interpretation firm… maybe a nearby PreK program with bilingual teachers or service providers. If your district works with bilingual SLPs or hires translators to help with assessments, they might also be an option. This is a huge need, and I’m sure the number of downloads would go up!

' src=

Third request for Spanish interpretation. I NEED TO LEARN SPANISH!

' src=

Would be so awesome to have Spanish handouts

' src=

02/25/2016 at 4:58 pm

Hi there! I purchased these WONDERFUL handouts to give to parents of the kiddos I work with in Early Intervention, but on the last page I noticed it says “do not share with other SLPs, teachers, or parents. Please refer them to the SRN website.” Does this mean I can’t print them out to give to parents?

02/25/2016 at 5:57 pm

You can share them with any of those people you listed! I mean please don’t send the whole packet for other other SLPs or Teachers to pass out to their caseload. Your purchase means you will share it with your caseload only. thanks for checking!

02/25/2016 at 5:58 pm

Thank you for clarifying!! 🙂

' src=

09/23/2016 at 12:36 pm

Hi Jenna. Is it okay to include a handout in a general newsletter that goes home to all preschoolers in our school? I think these would be great to add one each time the newsletter goes out to the parents.

09/23/2016 at 1:35 pm

Yes, Linda! You can hand it out to your school/caseload, just don’t share it with another SLP to do the same to her building! Any other SLPs you want to share it with can purchase an additional license at 50%!

' src=

01/20/2017 at 11:36 am

Jenna, when I click on the link to buy these handouts I am told the page no longer exists. Can you send me a link to the handouts? Thank you!

This is a fabulous set of handouts! I am Hanen trained and do primarily Early Intervention – and this matches up beautifully with the recommendations I include at the end of nearly every assessment. Pretty sure most parents file that report but may be more apt to read your ‘visually friendly handouts! Love them❤ (As I do most all of your ideas 😉

Hi Jenna- I have downloaded these handouts and LOVE them. I use them with many of my families. I am a bilingual SLP and my Spanish-speaking caseload is growing. I am wondering if you would be comfortable with me translating the text into Spanish. I would be happy to share my translations with you when I am finished. Thank you!

Hi! I still love this packet so much!!! Did these handouts ever officially get translated into Spanish?? I am dying to buy the Spanish version, but do not see it.

Late Talker Parent Handouts

My late talker handouts are a must for any late talker treatment program!

speech therapy handouts for parents

Late talker therapy LOOKS a lot like play since most of the work happens during play. However, ask any speech language pathologist, it is much harder than it looks! It takes a lot of attention and skill to know how to:

  • engage children while letting them lead the play
  • naturally modify the environment
  • speak in a simple yet purposeful way
  • expand play
  • map words on to play routines
  • expand utterances
  • the list goes on!

There is a lot to learn and this can be overwhelming to parents.

To help alleviate this stress, I created some parent friendly handouts that can be used as part of a home therapy program that helps them learn the techniques they need for their individual child!

Late Talker Parent Strategies Handouts

I created a "parent friendly" handout for each principle/technique that I find to be crucial for a successful program.

  • Professionals: These handouts can be printed out and given to parents as needed as part of a therapy program.
  • Parents: If your child is enrolled in a therapy program, but you would like more guidance and/or reminders of best practices at home, these handouts are for you

The topics covered include:

1. How To Model Language

Children at this age, or any age, won’t learn words unless they are presented and practiced in meaningful ways.

Modeling words allows a child  time to process the word! It can take some practice to learn HOW to model words. To learn more about this please either watch the video below or learn more at my Modeling Language For Late Talkers page.

I created a handout that reviews what not to do, when to model words, how to model words, and why to model words for parents.

2. Withholding an Object

Many times, parents will withhold objects in order to encourage their children to start talking. While this technique comes from a good place, it can be cruel if not used properly or at the right time.

In my parent friendly handout, I review:

  • when to withhold an object (only when the child has a word/sign in their expressive vocabulary) and have used it spontaneously over multiple contexts
  • when NOT to withhold an object (an equally important skill)
  • why to withhold an object (to work on independence and confidence)
  • how to withhold an object and support/prompt the child if they can't name the object upon first request (we want all communication to be successful so skilled prompting is key!)

3. Imitation

Imitation is a MUST in late talker therapy. Once a child is able to imitate words, progress really takes off.

  • gestures and motor skills
  • gestures paired with a sound
  • fun, exclamatory sounds

Then, you can use the handout to help guide parents where and how to focus their practice at home.

4. How To Play....Purposefully!

Since therapy happens during play, it is essential that parents know how to play with a purpose!

In my handout, I review:

  • Positioning (get down on the level of the child)
  • How and why you must follow your child's lead during play
  • How and why to talk with a purpose
  • How and why to you must listen and respond appropriately to develop language

5. 3 Strikes & You Win

This technique is something I created to help parents learn how to:

  • Model words using visual cues
  • Pause to allow time for the child to repeat
  • Prompt appropriately with child doesn't repeat

This handout is a must have!

6. Repeat-Expand-Repeat

Expanding on a child's utterances is an effective way to naturally teach a child the next level of language development (i.e., move a child from 1 word utterances to 2 word utterances.

In my parent handout, I review how accomplish this task naturally with an example:

  • Child says a word
  • Repeat word
  • Expand the word
  • Pause long enough for the child to repeat!

7. Language Simplified

Since the child is learning language by listening and interacting with caregivers, it is crucial that caregivers know how best to talk!

In my language simplified handout, I review:

  • What language simplified is all about
  • Why it is important
  • How to use it on a daily basis

8. Asking Questions

Therapists and parents of late talkers don't want to ask too many questions of course, but there are times when they must. Therefore, parents must learn HOW to ask questions effectively.

There must be:

  • balance - you never want too many questions
  • choices (great way to prompt!)

Parents must learn:

  • why it is important to ask questions the new way
  • support (who to prompt a child so he/she is successful)

9. Arrange The Environment!

Speech therapists naturally arrange the environment to ensure communication success and to create opportunities for communication learning.

In my handout, caregivers will learn how to optimize

  • toy storage
  • snack storage
  • organization

With these simple tricks, children will naturally be challenged to communicate to have their daily needs met.

10. Narrate The Day

Narrating the day is an easy way to expose children to the language that is meaningful to their lives.

The key is to "narrate the day" correctly.

Parents must learn how to narrate their day and how to map language onto their child's actions.
