INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE. This guide supplements the PhD proposal information in the ECE Graduate Handbook. Students and faculty should refer to the information contained here during the process of completing the proposal portion of the PhD degree requirements.

1.1 Need for a Ph.D. Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering For almost five decades now, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has been at the forefront of all engineering disciplines in technological innovation, resulting in one breakthrough after another.

The dissertation proposal must provide a thorough survey of the research activities in the research topic area and it must present original and innovative research ideas and preliminary results as well as defined research scope and directions.

The PhD thesis proposal should contain two fundamental components: review of the “state of the art” in a reasonably focused contemporary area of electrical and computer engineering research; outline of known problems to be solved or original developments that might be anticipated, accompanied by a line of approach to these problems or developments.

This Proposal should outline the specific intended subject of study, i.e., it should present a problem statement, pertinent background, methods of study to be employed, expected difficulties and uncertainties, and the anticipated form, substance and significance of the results.
