The 8-step guide to approaching presentations with a journalistic mindset.

presentation in news

In Gabby Reed’s first post for us she outlined the 5 Dos and Don’ts of Presentation Design . Here she details how to approach a presentation with a journalistic mindset. But what does that mean? Read on to find out…

My educational background is in journalism. And throughout my career – no matter what field I am in – and my personal life, I have found that thinking like a journalist has significantly improved my writing.  Beyond the relentless pursuit of who, what, where, when, and why, various tenets of journalism have the ability to aid people in all disciplines and industries in creating compelling content.

It can include something as simple as asking clients or consumers if there is anything you didn’t ask about a particular area or topic that they believe you should know before leaving a meeting, starting a project, or conducting research. Not only does this simple journalistic tactic demonstrate your interest in the person and the project, but it also prompts the individual to reveal some aspect of their vision or desires that they may not have already divulged in previous conversations.

That’s why this detail-driven strategy is located at the top of the following list of 8 ways to present like a journalist.

1) Focus on details

In Journalism 101, the professor will tell you that one of the main qualities that will separate you from your fellow journalism peers is attention to detail. This means more than knowing an interview subject’s first and last name. It means knowing the color of their eyes, the type of shirt they were wearing, or the way they clutched a coffee cup when they talked about a certain person, place, or thing. It’s the tiny details that most people would miss that make a story unique. That makes it personal.

While I was reporting for a story during a local, downtown event in my small hometown in Indiana, I spent about an hour just observing passersby and writing notes about the environment, the people and the interactions between them. When I sat down to craft my notes into a compelling narrative, I incorporated details from my observations and produced a delayed lead with an anecdote of an interaction I witnessed. Although the story had roots in the news realm, I used these minute details to add some textual imagery.

For a presenter, focusing on the little details of your topic will not only add another level of description to enthrall your audience, but it will also enhance your credibility in the eyes of audience members. Projecting credibility is much more than touting your position status or yammering about your high-profile clients. Focus on the people-centric details of your presentation to form a stronger connection with your audience.

2) Understand your audience

Before a journalist even considers pitching a story to an editor, they identify the publication’s audience and determine what topic would be of interest to them. When working for the local paper, several story pitches came across my desk. But, I only selected those that would provide real value to our readership. That they couldn’t read about somewhere else, or that we could cover in a novel and intriguing way – standing out from competitors.

A presenter should always approach their presentation this way because if your audience isn’t going to care about it, then why should you talk about it?

3) Present timely content

In the same vein as understanding your audience is offering appropriate content to your audience. Today’s 24-hour news cycle has cultivated a culture that demands constant updates on the ever-changing social, political, environmental, national, and global landscapes. Whether you like it or not, event-goers will hold presenters to similar standards of precise and speedy distribution of content. As a weekly newspaper, cultivating timely content could prove a tricky task each week. Though challenging, this task pushed the publication staff to tackle new stories and to cover them in creative ways.

If you provide content that your audience craves, your presentation will be more effective and your audience will be more impressed.

4) Avoid jargon

The average American reads at an eighth grade level . According to a recent study, businessman turned presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks below a sixth grade level , which could explain why he continues to perform well in primary elections across the country, recently snatching another victory in New York.

Another study by Contently’s Shane Snow found that a Buzzfeed article written at a third grade reading level was shared more than more taxing reads from the Huffington Post, New York Times, and Economist.

Another component of the infamous jargon community is the abbreviation – a useful internal tool, but potentially confusing external communication device. Both the AP and APA Stylebooks – the journalism content creation bibles – discourage the frequent and abusive use of abbreviations, primarily due to their reputation for confusing audiences.

When I was writing a story about a local government or state government agency, I made sure to spell out the entire name of said organizational body and then include the abbreviation in parentheses next to it. Although it was referenced with the abbreviation for the remainder of the article, it was spelled out in its entirety in the first paragraph so readers to refer back to it.

This all goes to show that, when possible, limit the use of technical terms and abbreviations in a presentation, especially if the goal is audience comprehension.

5) Craft captivating leads

The average individual’s attention span has dropped from 12 seconds to 8 in the past decade with the increasing popularity of social media sites and quick reference resources. Journalists have understood this well before this recent decrease in attention. During the Civil War era , journalists encountered issues of telegraph lines falling down. To ensure the meat of their story would make it through, they developed a method of writing the most important information first. Nowadays, however, this strategy has become less and less necessary – allowing for more creativity in story openings.

Presenters don’t have to worry about this either, but they do have to worry about audience attention spans. It is paramount that presenters craft a compelling presentation opening .

6) Incorporate supporting visuals

In nearly every newsroom, a journalist cannot simply get away with merely writing a story. Most every editor will expect a visual component – like a graph, poll, map, infographic, photo, etc. – in conjunction with the text. With approximately three out of every four people identifying as visual learners, it’s no mystery why this would be a requirement.

During my days as a reporter, I did everything from interviewing sources, taking notes, and compiling research to writing stories, shooting video, and providing photography options. A well-rounded and deep understanding of a story is a vital part of the journalism field and individuals must be capable of structuring a narrative with text and visuals.

As a presenter, simply telling your audience a piece of information will only garner 10% recall three days after your presentation. But, if you place a relevant, supporting image on your slide, your audience will remember 65% of the content a few days later. Bottom line: include visuals.

7) Embrace a storytelling narrative

If you have ever perused our blog before, you probably know that bullet points break our hearts . It also breaks the hearts of many researchers, with studies indicating that 10-15% of audience members will remember particular bullet pointed information a few minutes after a presentation, compared to the 80% who will recall story-driven, narrative elements and supporting images.

Researchers have discovered that character-focused narratives elevate empathy in listeners as a result of increased oxytocin levels , which rise when people feel like they are bonding socially. Sam Sanders of NPR asks himself how he feels about certain moments during an interview to capture the emotion in a scene so that he can accurately relay it to listeners.

8) Complete thorough research

Perhaps the most crucial lesson my journalism studies taught me was the constant pursuit of accuracy in everything you do – from writing an article to participating in an interview and even giving a presentation. Never purposely mislead your audiences. Always conduct enough research to support your insights and utilize reputable sources to increase trust between you and others. I would spend a large chunk of time just researching a topic, event, or person to inform my question-creation responsibilities and to establish my credibility as a reporter.

The more a journalist knows about a topic, the better and more comprehensive questions he or she can ask. The more a presenter knows about a topic, the better and more comprehensive content he or she can provide to any audience.

Check out this lengthy list of research resources for presenters so you can approach the stage with full confidence in your product.

Pair these tactics with an intense passion for your topic and boundless curiosity and you will have the perfect combination for a powerful presentation. To learn more about a journalist’s mindset and how presenters can harness it, read the following articles and resources:

By Status.net Editorial Team on February 27, 2024 — 11 minutes to read

Starting a presentation effectively means capturing your audience’s attention from the very beginning. It’s important because it sets the tone for the entire presentation and establishes your credibility as a speaker.

Effective Openers: 5 Templates

Your presentation’s beginning sets the stage for everything that follows. So, it’s important to capture your audience’s attention right from the start. Here are some tried-and-true techniques to do just that.

1. Storytelling Approach

When you start with a story, you tap into the natural human love for narratives. It can be a personal experience, a historical event, or a fictional tale that ties back to your main point.

Example Introduction Template 1:

“Let me tell you a story about…”

Example : “Let me tell you a story about how a small idea in a garage blossomed into the global brand we know today.”

2. Quotation Strategy

Using a relevant quote can lend authority and thematic flavor to your presentation. Choose a quote that is provocative, enlightening, or humorous to resonate with your audience.

Example Introduction Template 2:

“As [Famous Person] once said…”

Example : “As Steve Jobs once said, ‘Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.'”

3. Questioning Technique

Engage your audience directly by opening with a thoughtful question. This encourages them to think and become active participants.

Example Introduction Template 3:

“Have you ever wondered…”

Example : “Have you ever wondered what it would take to reduce your carbon footprint to zero?”

4. Statistical Hook

Kick off with a startling statistic that presents a fresh perspective or underscores the importance of your topic.

Example Introduction Template 4:

“Did you know that…”

Example : “Did you know that 90% of the world’s data was generated in the last two years alone?”

5. Anecdotal Method

Share a brief, relatable incident that highlights the human aspect of your topic. It paves the way for empathy and connection.

Example Introduction Template 5:

“I want to share a quick anecdote…”

Example : “I want to share a quick anecdote about a time I experienced the customer service that went above and beyond what anyone would expect.”

Organizational Preview

Starting your presentation with a clear organizational preview can effectively guide your audience through the content. This section helps you prepare to communicate the roadmap of your presentation.

Outlining the Main Points

You should begin by briefly listing the main points you’ll cover. This lets your audience know what to expect and helps them follow along. For example, if you’re presenting on healthy eating, you might say, “Today, I’ll cover the benefits of healthy eating, essential nutrients in your diet, and simple strategies for making healthier choices.”

Setting the Tone

Your introduction sets the tone for the entire presentation. A way to do this is through a relevant story or anecdote that engages the audience. Suppose you’re talking about innovation; you might start with, “When I was a child, I was fascinated by how simple Legos could build complex structures, which is much like the innovation process.”

Explaining the Structure

Explain the structure of your presentation so that your audience can anticipate how you’ll transition from one section to the next. For instance, if your presentation includes an interactive portion, you might say, “I’ll begin with a 15-minute overview, followed by a hands-on demonstration, and we’ll wrap up with a Q&A session, where you can ask any questions.”

Practice and Preparation

Before you step onto the stage, it’s important that your preparation includes not just content research, but also rigorous practice and strategy for dealing with nerves. This approach ensures you present with confidence and clarity.

Rehearsing the Opening

Practicing your introduction aloud gives you the opportunity to refine your opening remarks. You might start by greeting the audience and sharing an interesting quote or a surprising statistic related to your topic. For example, if your presentation is about the importance of renewable energy, you could begin with a recent statistic about the growth in solar energy adoption. Record yourself and listen to the playback, focusing on your tone, pace, and clarity.

Memorizing Key Points

While you don’t need to memorize your entire presentation word for word, you should know the key points by heart. This includes main arguments, data, and any conclusions you’ll be drawing. You can use techniques such as mnemonics or the method of loci, which means associating each key point with a specific location in your mind, to help remember these details. Having them at your fingertips will make you feel more prepared and confident.

Managing Presentation Jitters

Feeling nervous before a presentation is natural, but you can manage these jitters with a few techniques. Practice deep breathing exercises or mindful meditation to calm your mind before going on stage. You can also perform a mock presentation to a group of friends or colleagues to simulate the experience and receive feedback. This will not only help you get used to speaking in front of others but also in adjusting your material based on their reactions.

Engagement Strategies

Starting a presentation on the right foot often depends on how engaged your audience is. Using certain strategies, you can grab their attention early and maintain their interest throughout your talk:

1. Encouraging Audience Participation

Opening your presentation with a question to your audience is a great way to encourage participation. This invites them to think actively about the subject matter. For instance, you might ask, “By a show of hands, how many of you have experienced…?” Additionally, integrating interactive elements like quick polls or requesting volunteers for a demonstration can make the experience more dynamic and memorable.

Using direct questions throughout your presentation ensures the audience stays alert, as they might be called upon to share their views. For example, after covering a key point, you might engage your audience with, “Does anyone have an experience to share related to this?”

2. Utilizing Pacing and Pauses

Mastering the pace of your speech helps keep your presentation lively. Quickening the pace when discussing exciting developments or slowing down when explaining complex ideas can help maintain interest. For example, when introducing a new concept, slow your pace to allow the audience to absorb the information.

Pauses are equally powerful. A well-timed pause after a key point gives the audience a moment to ponder the significance of what you’ve just said. It might feel like this: “The results of this study were groundbreaking. (pause) They completely shifted our understanding of…”. Pauses also give you a moment to collect your thoughts, adding to your overall composure and control of the room.

How should one introduce their group during a presentation?

You might say something like, “Let me introduce my amazing team: Alex, our researcher, Jamie, our designer, and Sam, the developer. Together, we’ve spent the last few months creating something truly special for you.”

For instance, explore a freeform style presenter by Sir Ken Robinson.

5. Engage with your audience.

Work on your presentation skills to make a strong connection with your audience, get through to them and leave a mark.

Think of the presenter as the link between the topic and the audience. A strong or a weak presenter can make a difference between a presentation being a thriving success or a boring failure.

Hone your skills by engaging and interacting with your audience. Make them feel like a part of the presentation and not just spectators. 70% of marketers have found presentations with interactive content to be more effective than those without.

Here are a few ways you can make your presentation interactive:

  • Start your speech with uncommon questions to your audience. Involve them from the get-go, like ask to raise their hands if X.
  • Make eye contact to build credibility and show confidence. Don’t stare at your slides or notes. Smile occasionally and talk to the audience directly.
  • Have an active and confident body language. Don’t stand in the same place the entire time. Move around the stage.
  • Don’t be monotonous. Speak as you would to a colleague — with enthusiasm.
  • Ask close-ended questions in between to keep the audience engaged without losing time. Address them using their names to keep things interesting.
  • Share personal experiences and stories that your audience will find fascinating and relatable.
  • Practice thoroughly before you present so you’re fluent with the material and delivery.
  • Energy and excitement can be quite contagious. Make sure you exude enough to spread some to your audience.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

presentation in news

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

The Latest Presentation Trends To Keep An Eye On In 2023

Table of contents.

Prese ntations are used in virtually every industry. From teaching and training to sales and marketing, presentations are a vital method of communication that, when used effectively, can have a profound impact on your audience.

Capturing your audience’s attention is key to a great presentation. This often starts with the presentation design and various design elements. Whether it be the color of the background, the type of shapes or elements on each slide, or the overall presentation design, you should be mindful of the design trends in the presentation world.

In this blog, we will explore the hot presentation design trends for 2023 and how you might use them for your business.

Why Is Keeping Up With Presentation Trends So Important?

As we’ve briefly mentioned above, your presentation design can have quite an impact on how your audience engages with the presentation material. When an audience sees a presentation that stands out, it will stick in their mind after the presentation is over. This is what businesses want when it comes to crafting powerful presentations.

If your presentation is bland and stale, your information will feel bland and stale. On the other hand, if your design or visual content is too over the top, it can take away from the information you are trying to convey to your audience.

Striking this balance in your design is key to a successful PowerPoint presentation. Often, presentation trends are popular because they are effective when communicating to an audience while also drawing the eye.

Let's Dive Into Some Of The Latest Presentation Design Trends

A modern presentation usually involves set color palettes, asymmetric layouts, different shape s, and other design elements.

Let’s take a look at a few of the modern presentations and modern design trends for 2023 that you might consider using for your next presentation.

Abstract Shapes That Dominate Slides

presentation in news

One of the popular presentation design trends taking over the digital world right now is abstract and geometric shapes. Whether you’re creating a Google Slides, Prezi, Canva, or PowerPoint presentation design, shapes, and image overlays can be a great way to take your presentations from boring to bold.

In this example here , triangle shapes and images have been used to keep and direct the attention of the audience.

presentation in news

It’s also important to note that these shapes and elements don’t take away from the content on the slides, rather, they create an engaging slide that piques the viewer’s visual interest and keeps them informed.

Unique AI Generated Motion Graphics & Images

Another design trend we see emerging in 2023 is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Designers utilize programs to create animated graphics, images, flowing shapes, and other design elements.

AI generated graphics can be used to create a unique design and custom images for your business slide decks. This, along with the growing demand for virtual reality likely means we will see increased use of Artificial Intelligence throughout the graphic design industry.

Inclusive Visuals, Graphics and Fonts

A big presentation design trend we have seen in the past couple of years and into 2023 is the use of inclusive visuals. The graphic design industry has seen a big move towards accessibility and inclusivity. This has meant using different shapes, fonts, and images that reflect a more inclusive community.

Not only do these inclusive visuals, graphics, and fonts have visual appeal, but they also mean that your presentations and slides are more accessible to a larger audience.

Modern Minimalism - Say More With Less

presentation in news

A design trend we are seeing pop up across a lot of different industries is a kind of modern minimalism. The famous saying goes “keep it simple, stupid” and you could argue that the same applies to PowerPoint presentations.

While a trendy PowerPoint presentation design, neon colors, and colorful text blocks might initially grab the eyes, it can also distract your audience and take away from the information you are trying to communicate.

In this example below, we’ve created modern slides for Indigo that lean towards a minimalistic style. The presentation uses their brand palette and custom fonts to great an engaging presentation with a personal touch that doesn’t distract the viewer.

Dark Modes - Sleek and Secure

presentation in news

One of the popular graphic design trends for 2023 utilizes dark mode and dark backgrounds to make their slides stand out in the crowd without overwhelming the audience.

A dark background and dark theme can create depth in your graphic designs which can pull your audience in.

These dark PowerPoint presentation trends don’t necessarily require you only to use blacks and greys in your color schemes. Instead, you can use different shades of some dark colors that will create a dark mode style of presentation.

T he end result is something that the audience expects but still engages them throughout your presentation.

Making An Impact With Muted Images

presentation in news

While color palettes, bold color blocks, serif fonts, and other design trends all seem to be on the rise, current presentation design trends have also seen an increased use of muted image overlays.

Muted images are images that have been edited with a filter that dulls the brightness and makes them a bit moodier. Instead of immediately grabbing the eye of the viewer, these images blend more into the background and can create more depth in your presentations.

BIG, Bold Backgrounds

presentation in news

One last new trend we’ve seen in presentations this year is big, bold style, particularly when it comes to the background. With eye-catching backgrounds, you can immediately grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged throughout the entire presentation.

While a minimalistic trend may cater to certain audiences, big backgrounds can help you stand out in the crowd.

When it comes to taking design tips, you need to consider your content, your audience, and your overall brand identity. So while nature-inspired themes and geometric shapes might work for some brands, bold colors, big backgrounds, and fun fonts might work for others.

In this example for the Seatle Krakken , we’ve matched the vibe of the sports brand with bright colors and bold backgrounds.

Your cousin gives birth to twin girls, and the Duchess of Sussex gives birth to a baby girl on the same day. Which one makes national news?

The COVID-19 statistics of the second year of the pandemic are published and Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, passes away. Which one makes 'breaking news'?

Sir David Attenborough is knighted for the second time. Russia invades Ukraine. Which event generates more news coverage?

What determines certain events more newsworthy than others? We will discuss news selection and presentation in detail.

  • In this explanation, we'll discuss the topic of news selection and presentation.
  • We'll first explore the selection and presentation of news in sociology , followed by an overview of news selection criteria.
  • After this, we'll examine factors affecting news selection, with reference to cost, time, accuracy, audience and ethics.
  • Next, we'll explore the objectivity of news.
  • Then, we'll touch on moral panic theory as a biased news presentation example.

Selection and presentation of news in sociology

Why study the selection and presentation of news in sociology ?

Denis McQuail (1992) stated that news is socially constructed and is not an objective way of viewing current affairs. News is influenced by the selection made by media professionals (such as editors and journalists) and how they represent the selected event.

It follows that the content of news largely depends on the decisions made by media professionals, reflecting the biases of the creators. Events that do not get reported are not determined as ' newsworthy ' as they have little or no news value . The higher the news value, the more prominence will be given through media coverage.

News selection criteria

Not everything makes it onto the news - an event or story is reported if it is newsworthy . As such, networks often have strict news selection criteria . Let us consider a definition of newsworthiness:

Newsworthiness is the criteria that helps media professionals select and present news content based on news value.

The more news value a subject has, the more coverage it gains over a medium, for example, a newspaper or news program. In turn, this can help the medium attract more readers or television viewers.

Factors that determine 'news value' with examples

Spencer-Thomas (2008) noted that media professionals use news value(s) to determine whether a story is newsworthy. What may be newsworthy for one media platform may not be newsworthy for another; the readers and/or audience would be considered before reporting an event or story.

Readers of the Financial Times are unlikely to be interested in the article on the death of a celebrity. Whilst the event may be highly newsworthy in a tabloid newspaper, it is likely to have low newsworthiness for the Financial Times .

Galtung and Ruge (1965) suggested the following categories of news values that help determine an event's newsworthiness. We will go through each of these in turn.

Extraordinariness and news value

Extraordinariness is how unpredictable, unusual, or rare an event is. An event with an element of surprise is more likely to gain coverage than a routine event.

The death of Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997 was covered extensively due to the unpredictability of her death.

A more recent case is the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, which was a 'breaking news' event (even though it was not necessarily unexpected) because she was arguably the most significant member of the royal family. The British media began showing extensive coverage of her life and memorable moments in the days and even weeks following her death.

Threshold and news value

The bigger the event, the more media coverage it is likely to get.

Wars, conflicts, or natural disasters are good examples of news likely to be covered nationally and across all media platforms.

Negativity and news value

News that is dramatic or causes agitation or excitement is generally considered more newsworthy than positive events. This is because it is more likely to grab the attention of larger audiences.

Stories of violence, death, illness, tragedy, or political tension are good examples of newsworthy negative events.

Unambiguous news and news value

The simpler and easier to grasp an event is, the more likely it is to be included in the news agenda over complex news stories.

Personalisation and news value

Personalisation is the breakdown of an event as occurring due to the actions of individuals. This is so the audiences may be able to identify with the event, which increases its newsworthiness.

The headline 'Queen refuses to pass Parliament's controversial Bill' is more likely to attract attention than 'Parliament's controversial Bill to be revised'.

Factors affecting news selection

Organisational or bureaucratic factors which affect news selection are logistical considerations that affect which news events are covered and which are limited.

Aside from the news value, other factors can influence the selection and presentation of news content. This includes the way the newspaper or television channel is organised.

Financial considerations of news

Financial considerations change the type of news companies produce. F or example, investigative journalism and overseas reporting are considered expensive news-gathering processes.

As entertainment plays an increasingly important role in selecting news content, media platforms can provide 'infotainment' as it achieves larger audiences, which brings more advertising revenue and income.

Time considerations in news

The news content needs to be tailored to fit the time and space allotted in the magazine or newspaper article, or news channel.

In a 30-minute news segment, if a news item provided a slot of 10 minutes cannot be covered in the given time, it is likely that it will not be included in the news agenda.

A newspaper column or magazine will include an event only if the article fits the provided space or word limit.

According to neo-Marxists, time slots often limit the number of perspectives that can be given on a news item by restraining audience readability. This contributes to the biased news agenda.

News deadlines

For newspapers and magazines, the events reported usually happened the previous day. There is usually a daily or weekly publishing deadline (a cut-off point) by which a news story must be submitted. Otherwise, it cannot be included in the next release. This is less significant for television channels, as they can usually update news stories.

Immediacy and accuracy as news criteria

A news item is more likely to be included if it can receive live coverage and if famous or respected individuals can comment or offer sound bites on the subject.

Audiences of the news

The content of the news can be altered or changed to reflect the interests of its audience.

The Sun , a British tabloid newspaper, aims at a less educated audience, whereas, The Guardian , a British daily newspaper, aims at an audience that has received a higher level of education.

News content and writing style can also change depending on the audience's age group, for instance.

Journalistic ethics in the news

Ethics also constrain the type of new content and its process in reporting or presenting.

Newspapers signing up to a code of conduct means that journalists will restrain from publishing inaccurate information or misrepresenting people and respect people's privacy and dignity.

Objectivity of news

Aside from the practical aspects of news selection, sociologists also seek to examine the viewpoints that news represents - alongside the impacts that these representations can have on wider audiences. This calls into question the objectivity of news .

News agendas

News companies often depend on advertisers for revenue, so the news does not generally criticise the capitalist system - choosing to remain in its favour.

A large portion of news content is devoted to business and economics, where corporate experts and business professionals are positively represented. Newspapers include sections that favourably portray business interests and economic growth but rarely address issues regarding poverty or inequality, thus validating capitalist society.

Owners' influence over the news

According to Marxists , the content of news primarily reflects the views and interests of the elite and middle class . They believe that the owners play a role in shaping the content by setting company policies and influencing the news's nature and structure.

The owners deliberately first appoint senior professionals who share similar ideologies as them, as well as lower-ranking media professionals. The lower-ranking media professionals avoid publishing content that might annoy the seniors for fear of risking their jobs.

Hierarchy of credibility in the news

Stuart Hall argues that elite and high-ranking professionals like government officials, academic experts, CEOs and celebrities are often invited to express their views on news items rather than those who are 'ordinary' members of society. As a result, they become the 'primary definers' of the agenda.

Journalists consider the elite and people with higher positions in the professional world as more credible sources of authority than those belonging to the lower or working classes.

Social classes of news journalists

About half of journalists are from middle-class backgrounds and have been educated in private schools, which implies that these journalists identify with middle-class ‘establishment’ views.

Consequently, they prioritise middle-class issues and highlight them as general issues or opinions of the mass audience.

Churnalism and the news

Churnalism refers to a process where journalists over-rely on 'facts' without checking or doing independent research while producing news content.

These types of news are based on information, or sources churned out by government spin doctors, public relations consultants, and other experts.

Davies (2008) claimed that 80% of news stories in two leading British newspapers were sourced through c hurnalism for more than two weeks in 1997, where only 12% of the content was produced through independent research by journalists. 1

News presentation example

If we want to turn to a sociological news presentation example, we might examine how that piece of news is biased . Let's take a look at moral panic theory .

The term ' moral panic ' refers to an outburst or exaggerated public reaction to an issue related to the morality or behaviour of a particular group. Let us go through the study below to understand the theory better.

In 1972, Stanley Cohen , influenced by labelling theory , studied the fights that happened during one bank holiday in the UK between two youth subcultures: the Mods and the Rockers . His primary focus was on the media's response to that event.

According to C ohen , t he media presented extremely exaggerated reports about the event. C ohen argued that the media 's narrative featured the Mods and Rockers as folk devils , the target of exaggerated public outbursts and concerns.

This generated panic among the public. C ohen reported that t he media created a story that increased public fear - a moral panic. The police then responded strictly to conflicts involving the future Mo ds and Rockers (such as arresting youths for deviant behaviour), causing further disputes.

News selection and presentation - Key takeaways

  • News is socially constructed. Events that do not get reported are determined as not 'newsworthy' in terms of news value.
  • Factors that determine news value are extraordinariness, threshold, negativity, unambiguity, and personalisation.
  • Organisational and bureaucratic routines such as financial cost, time, deadlines, immediacy and accuracy, audience, and journalistic ethics influence the news content.
  • According to Marxists, the content of news primarily reflects the views and interests of the elite and middle class.
  • The term 'moral panic' is defined as an outburst of emotions, a reaction over an issue related to morality.
  • Davies, N. (2008). Churnalism has taken the place of what we should be doing: telling the truth. Press Gazette, 1.

Here’s a Quick Way to Get More Attention with News

Jul 21, 2015 | DataPoint Real-time Screens , Dynamic elements , How-To

We have 3 possible scenarios for displaying news.

  • This is a dedicated news add-on  for PowerPoint to display news or RSS information in a presentation. This is very easy to use and can show headlines, texts and images. If you need to display news or RSS information, and news information, then use this option.
  • When you need to display more than just news, try our  DataPoint  solution or combine with other Dynamic Element add-ons. It has the same news data provider (as in the first solution). This is very easy to use and can combine information from other data providers like database and Excel information.
  • News articles and flashes from any RSS source are connected in RSS or ATOM format.  DataPoint  can use any RSS or ATOM data feed. So, if you want to have the full flexibility yourself, then take the full control with the RSS data provider of DataPoint.

This blog article covers option 1.

How to insert real-time news in PowerPoint?

Set up a link to your news paper or news source.

news-in-powerpoint-add-news-channel

For the user convenience we are evaluating the url and we will display a check symbol at the Valid RSS feed option.

At the RSS feed the user will typically find those in 20 or 25 last published articles of the news source. When the user visit their home page, then the user will also see those articles that was posted as last articles, thus at the top of the news source. Typical for a RSS feed is that the user have a title or news headline and some more text about the article at the description field. Some news papers also include a link to a featured image. That is handy for the news presentation. A news feed with a headline and picture along is ideal for the news slides and a picture is also a perfect eye-catcher for the news presentation.

news-in-powerpoint-channel-added

Every few minutes the add-on will check the RSS feed for new or updated articles. The user can influence this polling interval by changing the value of the Feed Update Interval .

The slider option Duration to Display Article indicates how long each article is shown on the slide. Dynamic NEWS will display each article for a number of seconds and then it displays the next article in order to display all articles of the feed. Check the news source for the longest text and try to read it while recording the number of seconds.

Display the headline in a text box

news-in-powerpoint-textbox-news-properties

From the list at RSS feed to Display,  choose the RSS feed to use at this text box. These lists are the copy of the names of RSS feeds to be set up at the My Feeds list.

From the chosen channel the user select the column of the RSS feed that the user wants to use at the Column to Display . A typical column to start with is the Title column.

The Transition option allows the user to specify how to switch from an article to the next article.

Options here are:

  • No transition, the user will see the next article at once
  • Delayed update where the current text is removed for a little while and then the new text comes in
  • Fading where the text disappears and appears smoothly with the new content

Optionally, the user can bind a hyperlink to the text box so that when the user clicks the text then. the full article at the news source is opened automatically in an internet browser.

Real-time featured image

As explained earlier most newspapers add a featured image to their story. Look out for news feeds with nice and high resolution images in it. An image with a resolution of 120 pixels by 90 pixels is not something that the user can use full-screen on the slide. Just insert a new picture from the Insert > Picture menu option and use a local dummy image to display.

news-in-powerpoint-insert-default-picture

At the Dynamic NEWS task pane you now see news properties for images or pictures only. Just like for text boxes, choose the RSS Feed to Display and the Column to Display .

Set a hyperlink for a direct link to the full newspaper’s article.

Further enhancements

Now, work some more on the slide or presentation. Choose a nice font, a readable text size and also make sure that the text box can host the longest text possible. Sometimes a news headline will be spread out over multiple lines when using a larger font size.

Don’t forget to set a color fill with some transparency when place text on top of the images.

Run real-time news in slide show

Start the slide show. Visitors and people walking by in the office or shop will always look up to the created news presentation because the content is animated and always changing with real-time and hot news. Every x seconds, the next article will be shown on your slide and the news continues when it is automatically advance to a next slide. The user can continue to use news text boxes and news images on multiple slides.

In case news is not the main thing, add other slides with own information like products and services of the company, or promotions and the opening hours of the shop.

Presenting Data to the Public

Written by: simon rogers steve doig angelica peralta ramos nicolas kayser-bril lulu pinney.

There are lots of different ways to present your data to the public — from publishing raw datasets with stories, to creating beautiful visualizations and interactive web applications. We asked leading data journalists for tips on how to present data to the public.

To Visualize or Not to Visualize?

There are times when data can tell a story better than words or photos, and this is why terms like “news application” and “data visualization” have attained buzzword status in so many newsrooms of late. Also fuelling interest is the bumper crop of (often free) new tools and technologies designed to help even the most technically challenged journalist turn data into a piece of visual storytelling.

Tools like Google Fusion Tables, Many Eyes, Tableau, Dipity and others make it easier than ever to create maps, charts, graphs or even full-blown data applications that heretofore were the domain of specialists. But with the barrier to entry now barely a speed bump, the question facing journalists now less about whether you can turn your dataset into a visualization, but whether you should. Bad data visualization is worse in many respects than none at all.

Using Motion Graphics

With a tight script, well timed animations and clear explanations motion graphics can serve to bring complex numbers or ideas to life, guiding your audience through the story. Hans Rosling’s video lectures are a good example of how data can come to life to tell a story on the screen. Whether or not you agree with their methodology I also think the Economist’s Shoe-throwers' index is a good example of using video to tell a numbers-based story. You wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, present this graphic as a static image. There’s far too much going on. But having built up to it step by step you’re left with an understanding of how and why they got to this index. With motion graphics and animated shorts, you can reinforce what your audience is hearing from a voice-over with explanatory visuals provides a very powerful and memorable way of telling a story.

Telling the World

Our workflow usually starts in Excel. It is such an easy way to quickly work out if there’s something interesting in the data. If we have a sense that there is something in it then we go to the news desk. We’re really lucky as we sit right next to main news desk at the Guardian. Then we look at how we should visualize it or show it on the page. Then we write the post that goes with it. When I’m writing I usually have a cut down version of the spreadsheet next to the text editor. Often I’ll do bits of analysis while I’m writing to pick out interesting things. Then I’ll publish the post and spend a bit of time Tweeting about it, writing to different people and making sure that it is linked to from all the right places.

Half of the traffic from some of our posts will come from Twitter and Facebook. We’re pretty proud that the average amount of time spent on a Datablog article is 6 minutes, compared to an average of 1 minute for the rest of the Guardian website. 6 minutes is a pretty good number and time spent on the page is one of the key metrics when analyzing our traffic.

This also helps to convince our colleagues about the value of what we’re doing. That and the big data-driven stories that we’ve worked on that everyone else in the newsroom knows: COINS, Wikileaks and the UK riots. For the COINS spending data, we had 5-6 specialist reporters at the Guardian working to give their views about the data when it was released by the UK Government. We also had another team of 5-6 when the UK government spending over £25k data was released — including well known reporters like Polly Curtis. Wikileaks was also obviously very big, with lots of stories about Iraq and Afghanistan. The riots was also pretty big, with over 550k hits in two days.

But it is not just about the short term hits: it is also about being a reliable source of useful information. We try to be the place where you can get good, meaningful information on topics that we cover.

Publishing the Data

We often will embed our data onto our site in a visualization and in a form that allows for easy download of the dataset. Our readers can explore the data behind the stories through interacting in the visualization or using the data themselves in other ways. Why is this important? It increases the transparency of The Seattle Times. We are showing the readers the same data that we used to draw powerful conclusions. And who uses it? Our critics for sure, as well as those just interested in the story and all of its ramifications. By making the data available we also can enlist tips from these same critics and general readers on what we may have missed and what more we could explore — all valuable in the pursuit of journalism that matters.

Opening up your Data

Giving news consumers easy access to the data we use for our work is the right thing to do for several reasons. Readers can assure themselves that we aren’t torturing the data to reach unfair conclusions. Opening up our data is in the social science tradition of allowing researchers to replicate our work. Encouraging readers to study the data can generate tips that may lead to follow-up stories. Finally, engaged readers interested in your data are likely to return again and again.

Starting an Open Data Platform

At La Nación, publishing open data is an integral part of our data journalistic activities. In Argentina there is no Freedom of Information Act and no national data portal, so we feel strongly about providing our readers with access to the data that we use in our stories.

Hence we publish raw structured data through our integrated Junar platform as well as in Google Spreadsheets. We explicitly enable and encourage others to reuse our data, and we explain a bit about how to do this with documentation and video tutorials .

Furthermore we’re presenting some of these datasets and visualizations in our NACION Data blog . We’re doing this in order to evangelise about data and data publishing tools in Argentina, and show others how we gathered our data, how we use it and how they can reuse it.

Since we opened the platform in February 2012 , we’ve received suggestions and ideas for datasets, mostly from academic and research people, as well as students from universities that are very thankful every time we reply with a solution or specific dataset. People are also engaging with and commenting on our data on Tableau and several times we have been the most commented and top viewed item on the service. In 2011 we had 7 out of the top 100 most viewed visualizations.

Making Data Human

As the discussion around big data bounds into the broader conscious, one important part has been conspicuously missing — the human element. While many of us think about data as disassociated, free-floating numbers, they are in fact measurements of tangible (and very often human) things. Data are tethered to real lives of real people, and when we engage with the numbers, we must consider the real-world systems from which they came.

Take, for example, location data, which is being collected right now on hundreds of millions of phones and mobile devices. It’s easy to think of these data (numbers that represent latitude, longitude, and time) as ‘digital exhaust’, but they are in fact distilled moments from our personal narratives. While they may seem dry and clinical when read in a spreadsheet, when we allow people to put their own on a map and replay them, they experience a kind of memory replay that is powerful and human.

At the moment, location data is used by a lot of ‘third parties’ — application developers, big brands, and advertisers. While the ‘second parties’ (telecoms & device managers) own and hold the data, the ‘first party’ in this equation — you — has neither access or control over this information. At the NYTimes R&D group, we have launched a prototype project called OpenPaths (openpaths.cc) to both allow the public to explore their own location data, and to experience the concept of data ownership. After all, people should have control of these numbers that are so closely connected to their own lives and experiences.

Journalists have a very important role in bringing this inherent humanity of data to light. By doing so, they have the power to change public understanding — both of data and of the systems from which the numbers emerged.

Open Data, Open Source, Open News

2012 may well be the year of open news. It’s at the heart of our editorial ideology and a key message in our current branding. Amidst all this, it’s clear that we need an open process for data-driven journalism. This process must not only be fuelled by open data, but also be enabled by open tools. By the end of the year, we hope to be able to accompany every visualization we publish with access to both the data behind it and the code that powers it.

Many of the tools used in visualization today are closed source. Others come with restrictive licences that prohibit the use of derivative data. The open source libraries that do exist often solve a single problem well but fail to offer a wider methodology. All together, this makes it difficult for people to build on each others work. It closes conversations rather than them opening up. To this end, we are developing a stack of open tools for interactive storytelling — the Miso Project (@themisoproject).

We are discussing this work with a number of other media organizations. It takes community engagement to realise the full potential of open source software. If we’re successful, it will introduce a fundamentally different dynamic with our readers. Contributions can move beyond commenting to forking our work, fixing bugs or reusing data in unexpected ways.

Add A Download Link

In the past few years, I’ve worked with a few gigabytes of data for projects or articles, from scans of typewritten tables from the 1960’s to the 1.5 gigabytes of cables released by Wikileaks. It’s always been hard to convince editors to systematically publish source data in an open and accessible format. Bypassing the problem, I added “Download the Data” links within articles, pointing to the archives containing the files or the relevant Google docs. The interest from potential re-users was in line with what we see in government-sponsored programs (i.e. very, very low). However, the few instances of reuse provided new insights or spurred conversations that are well worth the few extra minutes per project!

Protests Swell in Russia’s Far East in a Stark New Challenge to Putin

Demonstrations in the city of Khabarovsk drew tens of thousands for the third straight weekend. The anger, fueled by the arrest of a popular governor, has little precedent in modern Russia.

presentation in news

By Anton Troianovski

KHABAROVSK, Russia — Watching the passing masses of protesters chanting “Freedom!” and “Putin resign!” while passing drivers honked, applauded and offered high-fives, a sidewalk vendor selling little cucumbers and plastic cups of forest raspberries said she would join in, too, if she did not have to work.

“There will be a revolution,” the vendor, Irina Lukasheva, 56, predicted. “What did our grandfathers fight for? Not for poverty or for the oligarchs sitting over there in the Kremlin.”

The protests in Khabarovsk, a city 4,000 miles east of Moscow, drew tens of thousands of people for a three-mile march through central streets for the third straight week on Saturday . Residents were rallying in support of a popular governor arrested and spirited to Moscow this month — but their remarkable outpouring of anger, which has little precedent in post-Soviet Russia, has emerged as stark testimony to the discontent that President Vladimir V. Putin faces across the country.

Mr. Putin won a tightly scripted referendum less than four weeks ago that rewrote the Constitution to allow him to stay in office until 2036. But the vote, seen as fraudulent by critics and many analysts, provided little but a fig leaf for public disenchantment with corruption, stifled freedoms and stagnant incomes made worse by the pandemic .

“When a person lives not knowing how things are supposed to be, he thinks things are good,” said Artyom Aksyonov, 31, who is in the transportation business and who was handing out water from the trunk of his car to protesters under the baking sun in Lenin Square, on the protest route. “But when you open your eyes to the truth, you realize things were not good. This was all an illusion.”

Across Russia, fear of being detained by the police and the seeming hopelessness of effecting change has largely kept people off the streets. Many Russians also say that whatever Mr. Putin’s faults, the alternative could be worse or lead to greater chaos. For the most part, anti-Kremlin protests have been limited to a few thousand people in Moscow and other big cities, where the authorities usually crack down harshly.

Sony Pictures gave the first major studio presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show on Monday.

In a short but sweet show in Barcelona — which preceded the screening of Greg Berlanti’s rom-com “Fly Me to the Moon,” starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum — Sony’s president of international distribution Steven O’Dell gave a whistle-stop rundown of the studio’s upcoming titles, revealing an enviable list of filmmakers it’s working with.

Among the Sony titles to have already wrapped production and due to land this year are Taylor-Johnson’s long-awaited Marvel entry “Kraven the Hunter,” set for release in December; the Brad Pitt/George Clooney action-comedy “Wolfs,” out in September; and Tom Hardy’s return in “Venom: The Last Dance,” coming out in October.

O’Dell said Sony’s upcoming slate hoped to cater to what he claimed cinema audiences were now looking for in their movies. While previously demand had been largely “IP dominated,” he said that now people wanted “IP, but mixed with bold and original content.”

Interestingly, he also teased one of the best known originators of bold and original content in Quentin Tarantino .

Although the director’s 10th and final film “The Movie Critic” was reportedly scrapped earlier this year, O’Dell said the studio — which released “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in 2019 — was still hoping to work with Tarantino on his next project. “We hope Tarantino makes his final film with us,” O’Dell said.

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
