Tcp and udp port numbers – complete list.

This is a list of Internet socket port numbers used by application communication with TCP and UDP on the Transport Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite for the host-to-host communications.

Let’s see who makes it possible? The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) assigns all port numbers except Dynamic or Private ports. IANA is a standards organization in the world that is responsible for assigning various addressing standards.

There are different types of port numbers: Well Known Ports (Numbers 0 to 1023), Registered Ports (Numbers 1024 to 49151) and Dynamic or Private Ports (Numbers 49152 to 65535). The last porn number type  Dynamic or Private Ports  will not appear on our list because they are cannot be registered with IANA. This range is used for custom or temporary purposes and for automatic allocation of ephemeral ports. They are usually assigned dynamically to client applications when initiating a connection. It is not very common for a client to connect to a service using a Dynamic or Private Port, sometimes some peer-to-peer file sharing programs do.

We will introduce the list of the ports with short description of different port types.

Using both TCP and UDP is also normal sometime. Some applications may use both TCP and UDP. For example, the low overhead of UDP with his short header enables DNS to serve many client requests very quickly. However, sending the requested information sometimes may require the reliability of TCP. In that case, the port number of 53 that is a well known port number is used by both protocols with this service.

Well Known Ports (Numbers 0 to 1023) – These numbers are reserved for services and applications. They are commonly used for applications such as HTTP (web server) POP3/SMTP (e-mail server) and Telnet. By defining these well-known ports for server applications, client applications can be programmed to request a connection to that specific port and its associated service.

Registered Ports >> Registered Ports

Registered Ports (Numbers 1024 to 49151) – These port numbers are assigned to user processes or applications. These processes are primarily individual applications that a user has chosen to install rather than common applications that would receive a Well Known Port. When not used for a server resource, these ports may also be used dynamically selected by a client as its source port.

The  Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)  and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) each use port numbers for their communication channels. The ports numbered 0 through 1023 are the  well-known   system ports , reserved for special uses. 

Port 0  is not used for TCP/UDP communication although it used as a network programming construct.

This topic lists the well-known port assignments for transport protocols TCP and UDP, and includes port number, keyword, and a description of the reserved port assignment. How to Check Ports in Use in Windows 10 & 11

Can’t use a specific port? Here’s how to check which port is in use in Windows with simple commands and apps like currports and tcpview.

Windows has many applications connected or trying to connect to the internet at any point in time. With all those applications, it is only natural that they use many network ports.

Two or more applications may need the same port to work from time to time. When that specific port is already in use by one application, the other application cannot use that port, and it may show a warning message, error out, or crash entirely.

In those situations, it is better to know which ports are used and which application is using that specific port. That way, you can either change the port or terminate the problem-causing application so that the other one works as it should.

The good thing is that it is pretty easy to know which port is used by which application in Windows . So, without further ado, let me show the steps to find which ports are used in Windows 10 and 11 operating systems.

Note: The methods shown below work in Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11.

Using a single command, you can get a list of all the ports in use by various programs. This method is quite helpful if you want to take a quick glance at the ports in use.

1. Search for “cmd” in the start menu, right-click on the Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator.” This option lets you open the command prompt with admin rights.

2. In the elevated command prompt window, execute the below command. You can copy and paste the command into the Command Prompt window by right-clicking inside it.

3. You will see the port number right next to the IP address (ex: 192.168.42.198: 50943 ) in the output result. You can see the highlighted portion of the attached image for better representation.

Keep in mind that the list will not be refreshed automatically. You have to execute the command again when you need an updated list. If you want the used port list to be updated automatically, follow one of the two methods illustrated below.

Use CurrPorts to find ports in use

Nirsoft Utilities has a pretty neat and lightweight tool called CurrPorts. It shows all the ports used by Windows and other programs. Let me show you how to use the application to get the information you need.

A quick note: In case you don’t know, Nirsoft has a lot of small and portable apps that are pretty useful in day-to-day life. If you’ve never used Nirsoft Utilities, browse the developer site and find many interesting little tools.

1. First, download CurrPorts from the official website. Being a portable application, you don’t have to install it. After downloading, extract the exe file from the zip file and double-click the file to open it.

2. As soon as you open the window, the application will list all the connections and their ports. You can find the port number under the Local Port section.

3. Being a dedicated port monitoring application, it offers quite a few options to manage the applications and ports. Right-click on any option, and you will see appropriate options like the ability to close the TCP connection, copying properties, application properties, etc.

4. If you want finer control, you can create your own filters to narrow down the search. To do that, select “Options -> Advanced Filters” option.

Use Sysinternals TCPView to check ports in use

Sysinternals TCPView is a Microsoft tool that makes it easy to view all the TCP connections and ports used in Windows 10 and 11. The tool is very similar to CurrPorts.

1. Download TCPView from the Sysinternals website, extract the exe file to your desktop, and double-click on it.

2. As soon as you open the application, you will see a user agreement. Agree to the agreement, and you will instantly see all the TCP connections and ports in use. You will find the port numbers under the Local Port section.

3. You can end the connection and free the port if you want to. To do that, right-click on the connection and select “End Process.” This will terminates the process.

About TCP/UDP Ports

  • Port 0 to 1023: These TCP/UDP port numbers are considered as well-known ports. These ports are assigned to specific server sevice by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). For example, port 80 is used by web servers.

Port Numbers and Protocols

TCP and UDP are two different protocols that are used for transmitting data over a network. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a connection-oriented protocol that ensures that data is delivered reliably and in the correct order. UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is a connectionless protocol that does not guarantee the delivery of data or the order in which it is delivered.

Here are some common port numbers that are used by TCP and UDP:

Note that these are just a few examples, and there are many other port numbers that are used for various purposes.

For port numbers lookup, the official database of ports and protocols from IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) is used. IANA is an organization that manages Internet protocol parameters, as well as IP address spaces and top-level domains.

Diffrent Port Number Ranges?

The entire range of port numbers (from 0 to 65535) is divided into three categories.

0 - 1023  Well-Known Ports The  numbers are reserved by IANA for system processes or network programs with administrative rights. Ports from this category should not be used without registering with IANA.

1024 - 49151  Registered Ports  Ports registered for use by conventional programs and application layer protocols. This category of ports is most popular for commercial software. Registration is also required to use any port.

49152 - 65535  Dynamic ports  Designed for free but temporary use. Registration of ports in this category is not possible.

How to list open ports and application using them in windows?

I have trouble identifying the application using port 25 on my Windows-10 system. Any useful hints to list used ports and using applications without 3rd party applications ?

Without the use of any external software. Open a command prompt:

  • netstat -abn
  • netstat -a -n -p tcp -o

Within Task Manager -> Processes/Details Tab

You can match the PID against the result of the second netstat command above, you can then find the image name/end the process etc if required.

There's also plenty of third party applications that can simplify the process and make the information easier to read, simple Google search if you want to find them.

A GUI solution would be to use the Resource Monitor of Windows. You can start it by pressing START and entering this command: Perfmon /Res

Then you can click on the Network tab to view all network connections, listening ports, etc.

Open a command shell and run

No need to run as administrator.

The last column is the PID. You can look up this PID in the task manager. Be sure to activate "show processes of all users" there.

All of you were way behind. A far easier method (was, & still is in 2023) is first to open the Command Prompt. (can do this by holding the windows logo key on your keybard+Cut&Paste, or just type in these 3 letters> cmd. So, Winlogo+cmd) Than type in or Copy(Ctrl+C), & Paste(Ctrl+V) *To terminate running process:

cmd>TASKLIST

[choose the task you want to terminate,than:]

cmd>taskkill /IM [program name ie:]mswebview2.exe /F

*Typing help in cmd gives options after running something too. Sometimes, it may even provide an example, that's how the above EASY method was obtained- after very minimal tial & error. So the very easy way after the tidbits above:

netstat -n from the command line will show you a list of IP addresses and open ports on your computer. A web search would probably be best in determining what is running on a particular port, but here's a few resources you could check open ports against:

The post requests responses without third party apps, however, others reading this may be more inclined toward a GUI.

For those looking for an application, TCPView seems to work best.

It is microsoft recommended and has a clear and easy to use GUI.
