Jesse Rumball-Smith - testimonial

I just wanted to say thank you for such a great and free service, all the other grammar checkers and writing assistants I have tried don’t have nearly the depth of features let alone all available on a free subscription. As a student with little income available I am extremely grateful that unlike all others companies you don’t limit features on the free plan. This is a fantastic product and given the income I would definitely upgrade to the premium. I've let all my fellow students know about Trinka as it is seriously a life saver.

Jesse Rumball-Smith

Thank you for your kind words! 🙂

Wow right time, thanks for such a great article. Helpful.

Melik, I’m glad the article was helpful to you 🙂

If you are going for ‘fancy stuff’ you might mention markdown, rmarkdown/knitr etc. This will replace latex imho.

And if you mention Latex you should mention Overleaf (an online version and a way to learn it).

Overall though, a very interesting list. Do you rate/rank these tools?

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most popular editing-related questions we receive.

Editing & Proofreading

How do you edit and proofread.

Our editing and proofreading process is 100% manual - in other words, it's handled by a team of highly qualified human editors, not machines . We don't use any automation software or tools, as nothing can beat the quality and accuracy of human editing.

Our editing team consists of a diverse mix of Doctoral and Master's-qualified language specialists . The team is managed by Dr Eunice Rautenbach , who holds both a Master's and Doctoral degree in language practice. All team members have extensive academic editing experience, are native English speakers (from the US, UK and SA) and have worked on numerous dissertations, theses and research projects.

Can I see an example/sample of your editing?

Certainly . You can download a sample editing and proofreading project here .

Will you sort out my references and citations?

Yes . As part of the editing process, we will ensure that your references and citations are in the correct format (e.g., Harvard, APA, etc) as per your university's requirements (you'll need to advise us what these are).

However, keep in mind that we can't fill in incomplete references or find the relevant sources for you (as it's impossible for us to know which sources you've referenced). We also cannot check whether the references you have are accurate or suitable for the arguments you make in your writing.

Can you fix/build my table of contents?

Yes , we can create a table of contents based on the headings and subheadings throughout your dissertation or thesis. This table of contents will include the respective page number for each heading or subheading.

Can you lower my word count?

Yes - as part of the editing process, we will edit your work for concision. However, we cannot guarantee a specific word count or percentage reduction, as this would risk cutting out important content.

Can you check my work for plagiarism?

Yes - we can provide a detailed plagiarism report with every editing and proofreading project. However, please keep in mind that universities use a variety of plagiarism-checking services. Therefore, if your university provides you with a plagiarism-checking facility (as they often do), you should double-check your score on that system.

How long does the editing and proofreading process take?

It depends on the length of the document, the overall quality of the writing (i.e., the number of issues to be resolved) and our project load at the time of submission.

Generally speaking, we can complete a standard dissertation/thesis of 20,000 words within 2-3 days , but this varies depending on the factors above. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you pre-book your editing with us for a specific date. For pre-booked projects, we can provide a guaranteed timeline, which is generally shorter than that of "walk-in" projects. Please email us to pre-book your project.

Can you provide a certificate of editing?

Yes , certainly. We can issue a certificate according to your university's requirements. We can also sign any paperwork required by your university as proof of editing.

Will my document be treated as confidential?

Yes , absolutely. Your work will be treated as strictly confidential and will never be shared or published. We will gladly sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with you if you wish.

How much does editing cost?

Our fee is based on the total word count of the document. This includes the body content and the reference list (as we need to review this). You can also include the appendices if you wish, but it's generally not required.

Click here to view our pricing or book a free consultation to discuss your project.

When should I submit my document to you?

Generally, editing and proofreading should be the very last step in your writing process. This ensures that you don't "undo" any editing work, or introduce new typos or grammar issues.

However, if your supervisor has specifically instructed you to get your work edited before submitting it to them for final review, you should follow their instructions. If you're unsure which approach to take, get in touch with us.

Can you edit my dissertation/thesis as I complete each chapter?

We can, but we don't recommend it . By editing chapter by chapter, consistency is reduced and there is a strong chance that there will be conflicts between document versions in terms of references, page, table and figure numbers, and so on. As a result, a lot of the work will be "undone" and you'll need to spend a lot of time revising and checking each section.

How much time should I factor in post-edit to make corrections?

We recommend that you factor in a day or two to make your final corrections after receiving your document back from us. This is not essential (as you can just accept all our edits "as is"), but it is a good idea to have a buffer in case you want to make any additions or revisions. You might also need to fix issues highlighted by the edit, e.g., regarding clarity of meaning or problems flagged with your referencing.

Can you do a second review of my document after the first edit?

We can review your document as many times as you need , but each review is charged separately. In other words, we cannot provide a second review (after we've edited and proofread) free of charge.

Can you check that my Conclusions and Recommendations represent all my findings?

This is beyond the scope of language editing, as it involves data analysis and interpretation. If you would like assistance with this, we can assist with 1-on-1 coaching , where we review your work critically and provide in-depth feedback (you can view a sample of this here ).

Can you write my abstract (or exec summary) for me?

No , we can't. As part of the editing process, we will improve the quality of your writing, but we cannot write any section for you. Having any section written for you would constitute academic misconduct.

Can you rephrase text to reduce my plagiarism score?

No , we can’t. While we may undertake some very light rewriting of poorly constructed sentences to improve readability and ease of understanding, we cannot revise content to reduce plagiarism, as we are not familiar with the articles/sources being referenced.

Can you arrange the separate sections of my document?

No , we cannot arrange (or rearrange) sections of content on your behalf, as this may impact the core meaning and/or the thread of argument.

That said, if we feel that a section could be structured better for clarity, we will comment on this and make suggestions. Additionally, we will check that your headings and subheadings are numbered sequentially and are consistent in style.

I still have questions…

No problem. Feel free to email us or book an initial consultation to discuss.

Still have a question?  No problem – feel free to  email us  or  book a consultation .

What our clients say

We've worked 1:1 with 3000+ students . Here's what some of them have to say:

David's depth of knowledge in research methodology was truly impressive. He demonstrated a profound understanding of the nuances and complexities of my research area, offering insights that I hadn't even considered. His ability to synthesize information, identify key research gaps, and suggest research topics was truly inspiring. I felt like I had a true expert by my side, guiding me through the complexities of the proposal.

Cyntia Sacani (US)

I had been struggling with the first 3 chapters of my dissertation for over a year. I finally decided to give GradCoach a try and it made a huge difference. Alexandra provided helpful suggestions along with edits that transformed my paper. My advisor was very impressed.

Tracy Shelton (US)

Working with Kerryn has been brilliant. She has guided me through that pesky academic language that makes us all scratch our heads. I can't recommend Grad Coach highly enough; they are very professional, humble, and fun to work with. If like me, you know your subject matter but you're getting lost in the academic language, look no further, give them a go.

Tony Fogarty (UK)

So helpful! Amy assisted me with an outline for my literature review and with organizing the results for my MBA applied research project. Having a road map helped enormously and saved a lot of time. Definitely worth it.

Jennifer Hagedorn (Canada)

Everything about my experience was great, from Dr. Shaeffer’s expertise, to her patience and flexibility. I reached out to GradCoach after receiving a 78 on a midterm paper. Not only did I get a 100 on my final paper in the same class, but I haven’t received a mark less than A+ since. I recommend GradCoach for everyone who needs help with academic research.

Antonia Singleton (Qatar)

I started using Grad Coach for my dissertation and I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for them, I would have really struggled. I would strongly recommend them – worth every penny!

How to write a PhD thesis: a step-by-step guide

A draft isn’t a perfect, finished product; it is your opportunity to start getting words down on paper, writes Kelly Louise Preece

Congratulations; you’ve finished your research! Time to write your PhD thesis. This resource will take you through an eight-step plan for drafting your chapters and your thesis as a whole.

Infographic with steps on how to draft your PhD thesis

Organise your material

Before you start, it’s important to get organised. Take a step back and look at the data you have, then reorganise your research. Which parts of it are central to your thesis and which bits need putting to one side? Label and organise everything using logical folders – make it easy for yourself! Academic and blogger Pat Thomson calls this  “Clean up to get clearer” . Thomson suggests these questions to ask yourself before you start writing:

  • What data do you have? You might find it useful to write out a list of types of data (your supervisor will find this list useful too.) This list is also an audit document that can go in your thesis. Do you have any for the “cutting room floor”? Take a deep breath and put it in a separate non-thesis file. You can easily retrieve it if it turns out you need it.
  • What do you have already written? What chunks of material have you written so far that could form the basis of pieces of the thesis text? They will most likely need to be revised but they are useful starting points. Do you have any holding text? That is material you already know has to be rewritten but contains information that will be the basis of a new piece of text.
  • What have you read and what do you still need to read? Are there new texts that you need to consult now after your analysis? What readings can you now put to one side, knowing that they aren’t useful for this thesis – although they might be useful at another time?
  • What goes with what? Can you create chunks or themes of materials that are going to form the basis of some chunks of your text, perhaps even chapters?

Once you have assessed and sorted what you have collected and generated you will be in much better shape to approach the big task of composing the dissertation.

Decide on a key message

A key message is a summary of new information communicated in your thesis. You should have started to map this out already in the section on argument and contribution – an overarching argument with building blocks that you will flesh out in individual chapters.

You have already mapped your argument visually, now you need to begin writing it in prose. Following another of Pat Thomson’s exercises, write a “tiny text” thesis abstract. This doesn’t have to be elegant, or indeed the finished product, but it will help you articulate the argument you want your thesis to make. You create a tiny text using a five-paragraph structure:

  • The first sentence addresses the broad context. This locates the study in a policy, practice or research field.
  • The second sentence establishes a problem related to the broad context you have set out. It often starts with “But”, “Yet” or “However”.
  • The third sentence says what specific research has been done. This often starts with “This research” or “I report…”
  • The fourth sentence reports the results. Don’t try to be too tricky here, just start with something like: “This study shows,” or “Analysis of the data suggests that…”
  • The fifth and final sentence addresses the “So What?” question and makes clear the claim to contribution.

Here’s an example that Thomson provides:

Secondary school arts are in trouble, as the fall in enrolments in arts subjects dramatically attests. However, there is patchy evidence about the benefits of studying arts subjects at school and this makes it hard to argue why the drop in arts enrolments matters. This thesis reports on research which attempts to provide some answers to this problem – a longitudinal study which followed two groups of senior secondary students, one group enrolled in arts subjects and the other not, for three years. The results of the study demonstrate the benefits of young people’s engagement in arts activities, both in and out of school, as well as the connections between the two. The study not only adds to what is known about the benefits of both formal and informal arts education but also provides robust evidence for policymakers and practitioners arguing for the benefits of the arts. You can  find out more about tiny texts and thesis abstracts on Thomson’s blog.

Write a plan

You might not be a planner when it comes to writing. You might prefer to sit, type and think through ideas as you go. That’s OK. Everybody works differently. But one of the benefits of planning your writing is that your plan can help you when you get stuck. It can help with writer’s block (more on this shortly!) but also maintain clarity of intention and purpose in your writing.

You can do this by creating a  thesis skeleton or storyboard , planning the order of your chapters, thinking of potential titles (which may change at a later stage), noting down what each chapter/section will cover and considering how many words you will dedicate to each chapter (make sure the total doesn’t exceed the maximum word limit allowed).

Use your plan to help prompt your writing when you get stuck and to develop clarity in your writing.

Some starting points include:

  • This chapter will argue that…
  • This section illustrates that…
  • This paragraph provides evidence that…

Of course, we wish it werethat easy. But you need to approach your first draft as exactly that: a draft. It isn’t a perfect, finished product; it is your opportunity to start getting words down on paper. Start with whichever chapter you feel you want to write first; you don’t necessarily have to write the introduction first. Depending on your research, you may find it easier to begin with your empirical/data chapters.

Vitae advocates for the “three draft approach” to help with this and to stop you from focusing on finding exactly the right word or transition as part of your first draft.

With its top editor abruptly gone, The Washington Post grapples with a hastily announced restructure

June 3, 2024 at 9:00 p.m.

by DAVID BAUDER / Associated Press

The struggling Washington Post was in some turmoil on Monday, June 3, 2024, following a hastily announced restructuring plan aimed at stopping an exodus of readers over the past few years, and the departure of the newspaper's executive editor, Sally Buzbee. (AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais, File)

NEW YORK (AP) — The struggling Washington Post found itself in some turmoil on Monday following the abrupt departure of the newspaper's executive editor and a hastily announced restructuring plan aimed at stopping an exodus of readers over the past few years.

Post publisher Will Lewis and Matt Murray, a former Wall Street Journal editor named to temporarily replace Sally Buzbee, met with reporters and editors at the Post on Monday to explain changes that had been outlined in a Sunday night email.

The plan includes splitting the newsroom into three separate divisions with managers who report to Lewis — one that encompasses the Post's core news reporting, one with opinion pieces and the third devoted to attracting new consumers through innovative uses of social media, video, artificial intelligence and sales.

Although Murray is temporarily replacing Buzbee through the November presidential election, the eventual plan places no one in the role of an executive editor who oversees the entire newsroom. Buzbee was said to disagree with the plan and chose to leave rather than be put in charge of one of the divisions, the Post reported.

Lewis was not made available for an interview Monday, and Buzbee did not immediately return a message.

"It definitely kind of blindsided people," said Paul Farhi, a recently retired media reporter at the Post. "But it shows you that Will Lewis is working out of a sense of crisis and urgency. He's only been there five months and he's making gigantic changes to the newsroom."

LOSING MONEY, LOSING READERS

Like most news organizations, the Post has lost readers — a decline more acute because the Washington-based outlet boomed with the interest in politics during the Trump administration. The Post's website had 101 million unique visitors a month in 2020, and had dropped to 50 million at the end of 2023. The Post lost a reported $77 million last year.

"Although (Post owner) Jeff Bezos is very rich, it has been my observation that billionaires don't like to lose money," said Margaret Sullivan, a former Post columnist and now the executive director for the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at the Columbia Journalism School.

Lewis told staff members on Monday that "I'm not interested in managing decline. I'm interested in growth," according to a person who attended the meeting. The new publisher also bluntly told staffers that "people are not reading your stuff. We need to take decisive action."

The new division designed to attract new customers — the Post called it a "third newsroom" — is steeped in some mystery. While the Post at one time headquartered the people running its digital products in a separate building, for several years it has integrated that and social media into the regular newsroom, as have many organizations. It's hard to predict how the new structure will work, and there are likely to be changes as they are put in place, Sullivan said.

"Maybe it's brilliant and innovative," she said. "But it just strikes me as being odd."

LOOKING FORWARD OR LOOKING BACK?

There are significant questions surrounding the restructuring — including suggestions that dividing the newsroom into three parts could create fragmentation of the Post's overall news report. Will separation into different units hinder the kind of collaboration that creates fluid multiplatform journalism?

"It feels so retro — reminiscent of search engine optimization, social media and pivoting to video, just as AI and agents threaten to become a new web," said Jeff Jarvis, Jarvis, author of "The Gutenberg Parenthesis: The Age of Print and its Lessons for the Age of the Internet."

Murray will be in charge of this division following the election. After that, Robert Winnett, a longtime editor at the Telegraph in England who worked with Lewis there, will take over the core reporting functions at the Post, the newspaper said.

There was some concern expressed by Post staff members about three men — all of them new to a newspaper that takes some pride in journalists working their way up through the ranks and two of them British-born — being in charge at a crucial time.

"In a few months, two British-born editors will be running the leading newspaper in the capital of the United States," Farhi said. "It was kind of unimaginable a couple of months ago."

They won't be alone. Other U.S.-based news organizations with British-born leaders included The Wall Street Journal, with editor in chief Emma Tucker; CNN, with chairman and CEO Mark Thompson; and The Associated Press, with Daisy Veerasingham as president and CEO.

Lewis was also questioned about his commitment to diversity after the first woman to be the editor in charge of the Post has left. He said he was committed to it "and you'll see it going forward," according to the person at the meeting.

Lewis has said that the Post will be experimenting with different pay tiers for digital subscriptions, for people who may be interested in particular topics or stories instead of the entire package, similar to products offered by Politico, for example. As editor, Buzbee has been beefing up the Post's coverage on topics like cooking and climate that appeal to particular readers.

Lewis has talked about searching for ways to reach millions of Americans who want to keep informed but don't feel like traditional news products serve their needs.

In one sense, efforts to make organizations like the Post and the Times more attractive to subscribers may contribute to the trends hurting local news, Farhi said. As the newspapers seek out more national and international customers, he said, they are much less likely to invest in covering local news.

I Tested 4 Tools to Fix Gibberish Text in AI-Generated Images: Here Are My Results

AI image generators are infamous for generating illegible text. So I tried several tools to see which one is best at fixing it.

Quick Links

What's the problem with text in ai images, 4 tools to fix gibberish ai text, which is the best tool to fix gibberish text in ai images.

Frustrated by the indistinguishable gibberish text in AI-generated images, I decided to test a handful of tools to see if they could turn it into readable text. Let's see what happened.

AI-generated images are impressive, but also come with their problems. Problems like weird AI-generated fingers and hands , unidentifiable objects, and gibberish text are common issues within AI imagery.

Although some AI image generators are improving their text results , oftentimes, text in AI images can only be described as gibberish. At first glance, it may look readable, but upon second glance, zooming in, or attempting to read it, the text is often unidentifiable in any language.

With the power of AI and traditional tools, there are some ways to fix gibberish text in your AI images.

I tested four tools to see how well each of them can identify gibberish text in AI-generated images, select it, and fix it. I’ll each tool out of 10 to show you which ones are most worthwhile using.

1. Canva’s Grab Text Tool (Premium)

Canva has its own AI image generators, both built into Canva Magic Studio and as external apps in the extensive and growing list of Canva apps . Canva’s results often produce gibberish text in its AI images, like many other AI image generators.

The Grab Text tool—found under Edit Image > Effects > Magic Studio —can fix gibberish AI text and turn it into readable text.

With options of individually identifying and selecting text or by using the Select All Text feature, once the gibberish text in your image is selected, it turns into a live text box ready for you to edit and fix.

Canva’s Grab Text tool is one of the best ways to improve your AI-generated images in Canva . This isn’t a free tool, but if you already subscribe to Canva or have access to a free Canva Pro trial, this tool is 10/10. It's one of the many perks you'll get when switching from Canva Free to Pro .

2. Storia Lab’s Textify Tool (Freemium)

Storia Lab is a browser-based design tool with a few AI features, including its Textify Change Text tool. Free users have 10 AI credits to use, but the results have a watermark unless you upgrade. The annual plan is $19 per month, and the monthly plan is $22 per month.

I attempted using the Textify tool on two of my own uploaded images—both created using Canva’s text-to-image AI generator—and Textify gave me an output error for both images.

Then I used one of Storia Lab’s sample AI-generated images that had some gibberish text in it. When I first used the Textify tool, I selected multiple areas of text which only produced output errors.

As a final attempt, I selected just one area of text to replace. This worked and produced a handful of results of varying success. When selecting the text, you can choose the color, font, and size for the generated results, or you can let the AI choose the color and font family on your behalf.

While Textify’s results do turn the gibberish language into your chosen words, it doesn’t create editable text from its results. It generates five results per credit use, and it takes a lot of time and effort when trying to fix multiple instances of illegible text in an image.

Overall, I’d give Textify a 6/10, as it does work if you’re patient, but the results could be better since they're not editable after regenerating the text.

3. Adobe Acrobat (Premium)

Adobe Acrobat is part of Adobe Creative Cloud, and although you can access Acrobat as a free tool with an Adobe account, many of its features are only available through a subscription, which starts from $12.99 per month. You can also access it as part of the All Apps plan. The Edit PDF feature is only available to paid subscribers.

For Acrobat to work for your AI image, you must first convert the image to PDF to upload it. Once uploaded, the tool should detect any text in your image automatically.

Once detected, all areas of text will turn into editable text boxes for you to select and rewrite. You can also change the typeface, size, font, alignment, and more using Acrobat’s text formatting tools.

Acrobat does a great job of identifying most of the text, but it didn't identify all the gibberish text in the image I uploaded. Depending on the placement of text in your image, Adobe Acrobat offers successful results. You can save the PDF in other formats to get the file type you require.

Adobe Acrobat gets a 9/10 from me.

4. Fotor's Edit Text Tool (Freemium)

Fotor is a graphic design tool and AI editor similar to Canva. It has a free plan, but the Pro plan is only $3 per month, or $6 per month for Pro+, and new users can also get a free trial of the Pro plan.

While Fotor doesn’t have a native tool that recognizes text to replace or fix it in an image, it does have a Text Remover tool, so you can remove any text in images.

You can identify the text using a brush or rely on its Auto tool—but for AI gibberish, the brush is your best bet. Once removed, you can then use Fotor’s Text tool to rewrite the text. You will have to manually match the style, color, size, and placement for this.

I’d give Fotor’s Text Remover tool a 9/10, but overall for Fotor to fix AI-generated gibberish text, the tool receives a 5/10.

None of the four tools I tested are free, making cost an important factor in evaluating their effectiveness. I also considered the time or effort it takes to fix the gibberish text into readable language.

Canva got the highest rating for its results with a 10/10. While Canva’s price point of $12.99 per month is the second-highest of the four tools, Canva commonly offers Canva Pro free trials multiple times per year, effectively making this tool a freebie at times.

Canva would be my go-to tool to fix AI-generated gibberish text. My second choice would be Adobe Acrobat as its results were equally pleasing, but there is the downside of having to convert your image to PDF first.

Both Storia Lab and Fotor offer somewhat decent results, but you need to pay for an upgrade to download high-quality images. If you’re going to pay anyway, I’d suggest paying for a Canva Pro subscription for the best tool for the job.

Google Photos has AI editing tools for quick edits. iPiccy is a strong, free AI-powered editor with numerous effects. YouCam Enhance is a simple tool for brightness and sharpness adjustments.

Thanks to advancements in AI, you don't need to be an expert in Photoshop in order to make your photos look good. Free AI photo editing tools online make it easy to enhance your photos—and sometimes, all it takes is a single click. In this article, we'll discuss some of the best free AI online photo editors that you can use today.

Canva is a popular tool with graphic designers, and it's also an excellent choice if you want a free AI online photo editor. You can auto-enhance your photos without paying for a premium version of Canva, and this feature will adjust your colors and brightness—plus various other areas.

With Canva, you can also access the Magic Edit tool with a free account. With Magic Edit, you can describe what you want the app to change and select how much of the image you want to change with the brush. If you want to learn more, we have a complete guide on how to transform your images with Canva Magic Edit .

2. Autoenhance.ai

If you don't want to go through the hassle of carefully manipulating every aspect of your images, you should consider checking out Autoenhance. It offers three core features:

  • Sky replacement
  • Perspective correction
  • Image relighting

There's also an API that you can use to integrate Autoenhance into your own applications. It's entirely free to use (even the API), but only for up to 15 images. There is an option to pay as you go, or you can also choose from different bundles.

Autoenhane is fairly simple to use; upload an image, and the AI will automatically edit it for you. You can also choose whether you want to edit HDR for your image. The edited photos are instantly available for download. If you want a speedy photo editing workflow , this is a great online app to use.

LunaPic is a simple AI online photo editing tool that even has its own Chrome extension. To use LunaPic, you just upload an image, select from one of the many art effects, and wait for the AI to do its job.

LunaPic gives you a whole array of features for editing photos apart from simple art effects. You can adjust light levels and add a ton of different filters, art, and other effects. It also has tools for creating video animations and GIFs.

This AI editor also gives you basic features like cropping images, rotating them, and removing or replacing the background as you see fit. You can even add captions to your photos, or share them directly on popular social media platforms.

Pixlr is a free-to-use photo editing tool that offers all the basic features you would expect from a high-end photo editor. These include background removal (there is a separate app for that), adding filters and effects, animations, and making picture collages.

Pixlr also has a paid tier that gives you access to thousands of photo overlays, additional assets, stickers, tutorials, and some exclusive editing tools. You can even open images directly from cloud storage platforms like Google Drive and Dropbox, making it an ideal choice for professionals who just want to make some minor edits.

5. Google Photos

The eponymous Google Photos might be a photo storage and sharing service at its core, but it has a few AI editing tools that you can use to quickly brush up your photos. Obviously, these features aren't as varied as the other editors on this list, but it's still ideal for those tiny edits.

For starters, Google Photos lets you automatically fix the lighting in your photos with a single click. Or, if you want more control, there are sliders for fixing the lighting, the contrast, and a few other details. Apart from that, Google Photos also has a bunch of different effects that you can choose from.

It's incredibly convenient too, especially since many Android users organize their pictures with Google Photos .

iPiccy is an excellent AI-powered online photo editing tool. It works just as well on mobile too, so it's great for editing photos on the fly. The editor features 100+ effects, a collage maker, and even offers functionality for basic graphic design.

From fixing the exposure, vibrancy, or the image's sharpness to extracting details, adding or removing shadows and highlights, and even changing the backgrounds, iPiccy's full-fledged photo editor is great to use. And you can create an account to save your photos in the cloud.

Given the fact that it's completely free, iPiccy packs a strong punch. It even has many photo effects that you can choose from, making it a great choice for editing your photos quickly.

Another popular tool that's quite effective for simple photo touch-ups is YouCam Enhance. Once you upload a photo, it automatically adds a watermark on the bottom-left and lets you use a slider to see the difference between the enhanced screenshot and your original. It is possible to remove the watermark by signing up for an account, so you may want to do that if you're not interested in cropping your images too much.

You can zoom in or out, but that's mostly it. YouCam Enhance doesn't give you any additional controls or let you tinker with specific settings. However, if you need a simple tool to enhance the brightness and sharpness of an image, this is a decent choice.

AI Photo Editing Is Changing the Game

Previously, editors had to make a bunch of fine tweaks to get their photos to look good. Now, with AI photo editors, it's much easier, especially when they're free and available online. Many of these editors generate revenue through advertising, while some offer a paid upgrade with more features.

If you are serious about becoming a graphic designer or photo editor, you should also consider getting a new monitor, especially one that is able to reproduce colors accurately on the screen. With a decent monitor, you can see how your photos will actually look once you edit them using any of these tools.

Apple set to disappoint fans with hardware-free WWDC

David Price

Apple fans looking forward to new Macs or iPads at WWDC 2024 should prepare themselves for disappointment. Despite the small number of releases out of Cupertino so far this year and the long list of products waiting for an update, a respected analyst has predicted that the event will not see any hardware announcements at all.

The prediction comes from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter . Gurman told subscribers (via MacRumors ) that “there’s no hardware slated to be announced at WWDC, unless Apple unexpectedly previews a new device launching later (to be clear: I don’t expect that).”

To be clear, the idea that Apple would hold a WWDC with no hardware is not in itself a massive surprise; of the past 10 WWDCs, precisely half have focused on software only. It’s more that Apple’s 2024 has been light on product announcements so far: just the two new iPads (Air and Pro) in May, and the M3 MacBook Air back in March. We’re still expecting updates this year to the Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, iMac or iMac Pro, iPad and iPad mini, AirPods, HomePod (possibly with a screen), and Apple TV–and that’s leaving aside the iPhone and Apple Watch updates that are nailed on for the fall.

There had been hopes, not least among followers of Gurman’s bulletins, that a new Apple TV would be announced this month: he previously said Apple hoped to refresh the Apple TV in the first half of 2024. But the same writer now says that a launch “isn’t imminent.” Neither would it appear that Apple has immediate plans to release new models of the standard iPad or iPad mini, both of which are sorely in need of an update.

The most likely hardware launch for WWDC 2024, however, is a new Mac. The event is nominally focused on software updates, but Apple will frequently take the opportunity to announce a new desktop or laptop, with high-end pro models particularly of interest. At WWDC 2023 the company announced the M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio and the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, along with the 15-inch MacBook Air. (Not to mention Vision Pro.) The summer before we got the two Macs based on the then-new M2 chip, as well as a redesigned MacBook Air and a new 13-inch MacBook Pro. Of those 10 WWDCs, the other half all featured Mac announcements of one kind or another.

Still, even without hardware news, this month’s WWDC is set to be a big one. Indeed it’s possible that Apple is holding back on product launches so that viewers can really concentrate on its first steps into the world of AI, with Project Greymatter bringing new functions to iOS and macOS, and AI making its big entrance into Apple’s ecosystem. For all the latest news and rumors, check out our regularly updated WWDC superguide .

A world war still within memory

As the 80th anniversary of D-Day approaches, people of all ages are honoring the Americans who fought in World War II. But a few remaining citizens are remembering fighting in it themselves. One is former Air Force gunner Mel Jenner, now 102 .

Jenner, as photojournalist David Burnett recounts, is not thinking about the war in the abstract. He is thinking about his best friend, Oscar McClure, then a young gunner as well, and watching as his friend waved his last goodbye from a neighboring plane. Far away from the speeches this week, that’s what D-Day still means to those who were there.

Spring-chicken President Biden , of course, was a mere toddler on D-Day, but he will join French President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders in commemorating the anniversary on Thursday. As Lee Hockstader notes, the occasion could give Macron the opportunity to announce a risky new provocation in the current war at Europe’s edge: sending French military trainers to Ukraine to help repel the Russian invasion. Biden, so far, has avoided putting any American boots on the ground, even as his red lines, Lee writes, have become more like “faded pink dots” — but French boots would be the greatest test yet of Vladimir Putin’s restraint.

In France’s decision, and other decisions by Western countries about just how much to extend our assistance to Ukraine, a lot is on the line, Max Boot notes. Like, not just World War III, but, uh, the eternal battle between good and evil ?

Americans like to think the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice, but in the real world, the bad guys sometimes win, Max writes. And in our own election this fall, he sees something as big as liberal democracy itself on the line. “[Donald] Trump, who instigated an insurrection and vows vengeance on his foes, is leading Biden in most swing states. Like many Americans, I would never have imagined that a disgraced president who has been impeached twice and is now a felon could possibly return to office. But there is a good chance that he will,” Max writes.

Don’t like it? Well, no need (yet!) to gird yourselves for war. If you’re a voter, you get to decide what happens at the ballot box — at least for now.

Sure, the high court is deeply divided on many issues, but the Editorial Board wants you not to miss its unanimous decision that a state official can’t legally pressure financial firms to stop doing business with the NRA based on the organization’s political speech. “The obvious problem is the precedent this could set not only for other unpopular organizations in New York but also for organizations that are as unpopular in red states as the NRA is in blue ones. Think of, say, how Planned Parenthood could face similar tactics in Louisiana,” the Board writes.

More politics

Karen Tumulty shares some exciting highlights from the 50-page platform of the Texas Republican Party : Public schools should teach the Bible! The names of Confederate leaders should be put back on military bases! Only Republicans should be allowed in state office! Okay, technically, it just says that state officeholders have to win more than half of the state’s mostly rural and Republican counties in addition to the popular vote, but, as Karen explains, that amounts to the same thing.
