From Prabhas to Rajamouli, top names have come forward to promote “Romantic”, the latest film starring Akash Puri, director Puri Jagannadh’s son. No wonder that the film has created a lot of buzz in the last two weeks.

With high-pitched publicity and an interesting trailer, “Romantic” has managed to garner attention. The film is here. Let’s analyze. 

Story: Set in Goa, the story begins with the voiceover of a police officer Ramya Gowarikar (Ramya Krishna), who narrates the intense and greatest love she had witnessed in her stint there. 

Vasco Da Gama (Akash Puri), whose police officer’s father was killed on duty, has only one aim – to earn big money so that he can run a charity foundation for his grandmother Mary (Rama Prabha). He quickly joins the gang of smugglers.

When his boss gets killed in a shootout, Vasco Da Gama becomes rich, but the police are chasing him. Meanwhile, the young boy is floored by the irresistible local beauty Monica (Ketika Sharma).

Ramya Gowarikar arrests Vasco Da Gama in a case, and he gets a life sentence in that case. What will happen to his love story with Monica?

Artistes’ Performances: Akash Puri still possesses boyish looks. Though he is sincere in his effort and tries playing the gangster part convincingly, the role is too big for the young boy to carry on his shoulders. He looks convincing in part, where he has to express feelings when he sees the charming beauty of Ketika Sharma. But when he mouths dialogues like mass heroes do, he looks unconvincing.

Ketika Sharma will surely skip the heartbeat of youngsters. Her unabashed display of skin and beautiful face will strike a chord with the target audiences. The romantic (lustful) moments of Akash Puri and Ketika Sharma are aimed at the galleries.

Ramya Krishna, who essays a poorly written character, brings a lot of dignity to otherwise incoherent proceedings. Sunaina’s comedy is okay. Uttej’s role is unconvincing.

Technical Excellence: The film is entirely shot in Goa, and the cinematographer captures the locations beautifully. More than the locations, the cameraman films the figure of Ketika Sharma captivatingly.

Music is a mixed bag. Dialogues written by Puri Jagannadh stand out. 

Highlights: Ketika Sharma’s skin show Puri’s mark dialogues

Drawback: Illogical Plot No rhyme and reason Lack of emotional connect

Analysis “Romantic” is directed by newcomer Anil Paduri, a long-time associate of Puri Jagannadh. But the film has a stamp of Puri Jagannadh’s direction throughout because he has written the story, screenplay, and dialogue. By the end of the film, we may wonder what the story is about.

Is this story about two young lovers who don’t know the difference between love and lust, like and desire? Or is it about a young boy’s ill fate as he attempts to be a godfather?

The protagonist is presented as a typical Puri Jagannadh’s reckless hero, who mouths Hindi dialogues laced with philosophical quotations, who wants to do ‘it’ with his girl ‘tonight’, and one who is either busy 'pattukovadam’ (touching) of guns and girl.

However, the hero has two objectives- one is to earn money and do some good for his locality and the other is to get the love of the girl he wants.

There is an entire song about the boy and girl talking or singing lines from Puri Jagannadh’s musings (his philosophical podcasts). While the song is beautiful to watch, it adds nothing to the main plot. Such is the aimlessness of this film.

“Desanni Preminchadam Easy Paisa Kharchu Undadu…Ammaini Premiste Sarada Teerchestadi,” says the hero in one scene saying he has not loved the girl yet. 15 or 20 minutes later, he says he can’t live without the girl. While one-liners sound good on paper, they don’t go well with the flow of the narrative. 

Plus, the climax leaves us in utter disappointment. 

So, what works in the film? The picturization of intense romantic moments between Ketika Sharma and Akash Puri. The girl is strikingly beautiful. Akash also is believable in romancing the girl than firing the bullets. 

All said, “Romantic” is a true-blue Puri Jagannadh’s film that doesn’t rely on logic or proper story, but the characterization of the hero and heroine romance. It may appeal to a mass audience, but the film is not at all engrossing.

15 Best Telugu Romances Of All Time

There are hundreds of love stories in Telugu cinema, but there are only a few that stand the test of time. Some movies like K. S. Prakash Rao's Prema Nagar (1971) and Sukumar's Arya (2004) have a good re-watch value, but they tend to concentrate on a particular type of self-loathing rather than addressing the subject of heartbreak. And when it comes to laugh-a-minute marathons, such as Vijaya Bhaskar's Nuvvu Naaku Nachav (2001) and Mohanakrishna Indraganti's Ashta Chamma (2008), the sole purpose seems to be, more than anything else, to tickle the funny bone. Although these are gems truly, they can't be exactly termed great romances.

Here, then, is a list of hand-picked movies that will make you love, laugh, cry, and maybe even rock you to sleep:

Devadasu (1953)

Director : Vedantam Raghavaiah

Telugu cinema has mollycoddled many love-sick men. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel, Devdas , which has been adapted for the screen several times in several languages, remains a benchmark to this day. And even though many actors have drunk themselves to death to capture the heartbreak that they can't repair, only Akkineni Nageswara Rao stands on top of the list. His portrayal of a rich and arrogant young man who acts selfishly is faultless. 

Devadasu is very much a product of its time. There are many scenes where the eponymous hero hits Parvati (Savitri) for voicing her opinions and, thereafter, it doesn't take too much time for him to regret and offer a few words of comfort and affection. Parvati, for the sake of love, though, keeps protecting him in the hope that he'll change for the better and learn to accept life as it comes. Devadasu carries some of the best performances of the twentieth century.

  Missamma (1955)

Director : L. V. Prasad

Before N. T. Rama Rao became an action star, he appeared in various feel-good comedies. In Missamma , he stars as an educated young man, named M. T. Rao, who tricks his way into finding an employment opportunity with the help of his companion, Mary (Savitri). But that's not the best part about this movie, which also stars S. V. Ranga Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao. 

Rama Rao, with his charming smile, pencil thin moustache, and wavy hair, performs naturally without raising his voice anywhere. He's more at home here than in his later films, such as Adavi Ramudu (1977) and Bobbili Puli (1982). If you visit Missamma after catching him in those dramas, it'll boggle your mind. Come to think of it, Rama Rao could have also become a heartthrob by focusing majorly on romantic comedies, but he chose to endear himself to the masses by throwing punches at his screen opponents.

Mooga Manasulu (1964)

Director : Adurthi Subba Rao

Mooga Manasulu, which is based on the concept of soul-mates and reincarnation, doesn't handle the core theme with care. It kneads the drama's dough as though it's a simple story about unrequited love, but you have to remember that the film was made more than half a century ago. Akkineni Nageswara Rao as a boatman, named Gopi, who showers praise and devotion on Radha (Savitri), is at the height of his powers here. 

And Savitri, for her part, plays a character that requires her to keep her emotions to herself throughout the movie. She doesn't express her innermost thoughts to Gopi because she's not too sure if her object of affection would be interested in reciprocating her feelings. However, things work in their favor, albeit in their next birth, and their Manasulu (hearts) finally get a chance to embrace. 

  Maro Charitra (1978)

Director : K. Balachander

Maro Charitra sort of begins on an audacious note. Balachander tells the viewers that this is going to be an extraordinary love story in the opening scenes through his principal characters, Balu ( Kamal Haasan ) and Swapna (Saritha). The filmmaker knows that it's a risky idea to push the leads of a romance movie off a cliff, but he goes for it anyway to show that he can mix the plotlines of youthful buoyancy and tragedy in a bowl and serve it fresh to his audience. His gamble works perfectly. 

The movie doesn't dive into the caste differences between Balu and Swapna much. However, it makes it a point to put a spoke in the wheels of the languages that are spoken by them at their respective homes — she's a Telugu and he's a Tamilian. Since its release, Maro Charitra has been remade in numerous languages, but the original walks away with the largest share of the applause. 

  Geethanjali (1989)

Director : Mani Ratnam

Can a gloomy story about a woman and a man who are on the verge of dying appear happy and cheerful? What do you call it — optimism or foolhardiness? Many philosophers have debated on the topic of death and they've all come up with different views that are satisfying in their own ways. Geethanjali is not a treatise on death or the act of giving up. It is, in fact, a movie about riding the wave despite knowing that it may come to an end sooner rather than later. 

The only bits from Geethanjali that don't work today are unarguably the ones that are created around the characters played by Suthivelu and Disco Shanti. The plot concerning them is unnecessarily centered on adultery to add a pinch of comic relief. Nonetheless, this is a film that'll inspire a couple more generations of writers and directors. If you want to roam around a hill station à la Nagarjuna and Girija, you should learn the lyrics to " Aamani Paadave Haayiga ;" they'll come in handy. 

Ninne Pelladatha (1996)

Director : Krishna Vamsi

Nagarjuna and Tabu is a combination made in heaven. Ninne Pelladatha is the Mysore Pak of romantic dramas. It's soft and sweet at the right places and it only becomes a little gooey towards the end. This may even seem like the movie's USP for people who crave high-tension climactic resolutions. Isn't it sort of amazing how this film has so many cool songs and pleasing wisecracks? 

The best part about Ninne Pelladatha is the manner in which Mahalakshmi (Tabu) and Seenu (Nagarjuna) make the art of falling and being in love look so simple. It's not rocket science. It shouldn't be a difficult outcome to achieve when the actors are specifically preparing to portray a certain kind of chemistry. But that doesn't happen every day. So, when it happens, clap your hands and cheer for the duo.

Manasantha Nuvve (2001)

Director : V. N. Aditya

Whenever somebody mentions Manasantha Nuvve , your mind immediately has to sprint to the image where a young boy runs behind a jeep with a rolling tyre, singing, " Tuneega Tuneega ." It's definitely a picture that stays rent-free in the collective consciousness of Telugu movie buffs. The makers probably didn't know they were making something powerful back then, but, almost twenty years later, the song still holds the reins to an era gone by. 

The story of how Chanti (Uday Kiran) waits for Anu (Reema Sen), his childhood friend, for more than a decade without having a clue about where she is – or what she may be doing – is marvelous. The director seems to be saying that people can fall in love only once in a lifetime. Can two people really hope that they'll find their way back into love? It's a cliché, of course, but it clearly works for this movie. 

  Jayam (2002)

Director : Teja

Are you ready to lose your sleep for a day or two? If yes, then you can gladly pick one blockbuster song from the album. And what's it going to be – " Bandi, Bandi, Railu Bandi ," or " Raanu, Raanu ," or " Priyathama Thelusuna ," or " Andamaina Manasulo ?" Do you see why it's not an easy job? 

And for any movie, a title that symbolizes victory is risky. What if it turns out to be drab? Well, here's a better one – what if it meets with a disastrous fate at the box office? In the early days, Teja's genius was obviously in making the leads likeable and a tad bit vulnerable. The characters that Nithiin and Sadha portray in this film are that of regular small-towners. When they begin to trade shy smiles, they learn that the world they live in is not hunky-dory. However, they reach the final lap of victory after impairing the baddie (played menacingly by Gopichand). It's a happy ending indeed for the lovers.

  Anand (2004)

Director : Sekhar Kammula

Anand , even after all these years, remains a film that brings joy to the viewers. It's a comedy in which the gags land perfectly and a romantic adventure where the protagonists (played by Kamalinee Mukherjee and Raja) don't mince words. Adventures needn't always have to be set in the Wild West. It can be set in a neighborhood with a gang of twenty-somethings and a couple of children, too. Oh, guns don't go off here! You'll just be invited to hear beautiful conversations and songs. Isn't that more than enough? 

The biggest asset that Anand has acquired over the course of a decade and a half is a loyal fan base that pays respects to the tagline ( Manchi Coffee Lanti Cinema ) and its dozen-odd characters. And just like Jayam , Anand lives up to its simple title. It spreads happiness and wholesome vibes that'll stay with you for a lifetime. This is a story of love for the ages.

  Godavari (2006)

Godavari is yet another magical delicacy from the house of Kammula and though it feels bigger and richer, it's just as warm as Anand . It's a mystery as to how well these two films complement each other. Their storylines aren't similar, but there's a connecting thread that passes through them. Some may say that the thread is Kamalinee Mukherjee since she stars in this drama, as well, nevertheless the facts point toward the way the female characters are written. 

Seetha Mahalakshmi from Godavari and Roopa from Anand feel like real people. You don't think of them as mere cardboard characters. They have an equal role to play in the larger scheme of things. And, more importantly, they won't tolerate the likes of Arjun Reddy. These are some of the qualities that make these movies stand apart from the regular fare of senseless tales that revolve around love and longing. 

  Ye Maaya Chesave (2010)

Director : Gautham Menon

Ye Maaya Chesave creates many moods – it takes the viewers on a roller-coaster ride, for it makes its protagonists, Karthik ( Naga Chaitanya ) and Jessie (Samantha), go through a tidal wave of emotions. What don't you have here? You get a song at first sight where Karthik jumps with joy to dance to, " Ee Hrudayam ," many flirtatious exchanges that make the duo giggle like love-struck teenagers, heated arguments that end up making them shed tears, and hugs that can possibly melt ice caps. 

The Tamil version, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa , is unanimously considered a finer moving picture because of its bittersweet ending. But Ye Maaya Chesave stands on its own two feet despite opting for a closing scene that's more conventional. For people who can watch and digest both, Menon's movies can certainly be a treat. And for those who can't handle the pills of reality, this Telugu offering can be considered a safer plane landing.

Ala Modalaindi (2011)

Director : Nandini Reddy

Some of the jokes from Ala Modalaindi don't land well. It goes for the low-hanging fruits and, as a result, they pull the overall watchability quotient a bit down. However, if you are able to move past those sticky junctures, you'll soon find out that this is a refreshing piece of cinema that walks the line between comedy and romance. 

Nithya ( Nithya Menen ) doesn't like to use a mobile phone. She disses the modern technological device and warns her friends to stay away from it. But if she had called the love of her life, Gautam ( Nani ), every now and then and enquired about his emotional well-being, she wouldn't have faced so many problems in her life. But, joking apart, Ala Modalaindi is fantastic from beginning to end and the whole universe should once again conspire to bring Menen and Nani back together for a thoroughbred rom-com.

  Oohalu Gusagusalade (2014)

Director : Srinivas Avasarala

Almost an hour and a half into Oohalu Gusagusalade , Uday (Srinivas Avasarala), while sitting across from Siri ( Raashi Khanna ), at a restaurant, drops a cheesy bomb – he tells her that beauty is stuck to her face and she can't do anything to wipe it away. It is, if you give it a moment's thought, an outright pickup line. However, since its silliness is wrapped in the bacon of delicious comedy, it hits the target. Siri doesn't throw her hands over him excitedly and convey her desire to spend a lifetime of bliss in his company, but she gives him a gentle smile and moves on to prod him about the meaning of beauty. 

Oohalu Gusagusalade is full of such amusing conversations. And though Siri actually likes Venky (Naga Shourya), you indubitably root for Uday, as he's a first-rate babbler. 

Pelli Choopulu (2016)

Director : Tharun Bhascker

If a ridiculous meme-page says, "An aimless boy and an ambitious girl make the best pair," don't laugh it off. There's a great amount of truth to it. Tharun Bhascker knew about it and that's why he made Pelli Choopulu . Don't you remember how Chitra ( Ritu Varma ) pushes Prasanth ( Vijay Deverakonda ) to move out of his comfort zone? She tells him softly – and then strictly – to hone his skills instead of being a slacker. 

She opens a door and allows him to peek at all the various responsibilities that are attached to adulthood. Somehow, this convinces him to give it a shot and the movie, in turn, gives you a chance to reassess your needs and wants. It may not be the director's intention to do so, but when a romantic comedy rekindles your spirit, you won't be able to control your happy heart. Art, after all, helps you shape your belief system.

Sammohanam (2018)

Director : Mohanakrishna Indraganti

Sammohanam cannot be spoken about without mentioning Vivek Sagar. The movie has just four songs in the album and all of them are brilliant. If you believe in the theory called "love at first sight," then you should also believe in "love at first hearing." Without Sagar's brilliance, this film wouldn't have become such a candy-flavored rom-com. Needless to say, Indraganti deserves all the praise for coming up with a cute storyline and for roping in Aditi Rao Hydari , Sudheer Babu , Pavithra Lokesh, and Naresh, thereby creating a heart-warming movie that never fails to regale the audience. 

A running gag in the film involves a discussion between a children's book illustrator and an aspiring actor, and it's lovely to watch the respective people support their chosen fields of interest in their own quirky manners. Naresh, with his over-the-top performance, is a delight to behold and so is Hydari who keeps switching between grief and gratitude.

Story Review

Vasco De Gama (Akash Puri) loses his father, a sincere police officer at a young age and is raised by her grandmother Mary (Rama Prabha) in Goa. Vaso who leads a life of a roadside Romeo in his quest to build an orphanage for orphans to get easy and quick money treads through the illegal path and in the process becomes the dreaded mafia don. Even as Vaso rules Goa and in even gets attracted to a beautiful girl Monica (Ketika Sharma), Gang wars erupt in Goa for superiority, and sincere police officer Ramya Gowarikar (Ramya Krishna) decides to eliminate the mafia. Where this leads to and how it affected the lives of Vaso, Monica and Ramya should be watched in Romantic.

Artists, Technicians Review

Anil Paduri just directed the story provided by Puri Jagannath. On debut, he did not get a chance to pen the dialogues or screenplay also. So more than him, the result of Puri goes into the account of Puri. Puri Jagannath's story is nothing new. He came with a routine story and it has shades of all his old films starting from Pokiri to Ismart Shankar. As told by Puri, the film has shades of Idiot. Director Anil Paduri tried to give mass heroism to Akash Puri. However since Akash has no such image and still has young looks, it did not help his cause.

Anil Paduri did not even try to narrate the routine story in a novel and interesting manner. This diluted the film's main idea and so monotonous crept in testing the patience of the viewers. Many expected Romantic to be Romantic but romantic elements went missing as Gangster dominated it. The climax is planned in a different manner to prove the point that the lead pair does not believe in love but they have infatuation.

One can expect what to see on the screen when Puri Jagannath provides story, screenplay, and dialogues. The protagonist will have a careless attitude and he is infatuated with the heroine. So the dialogues will have Puri stamp on them. Everything turns routine and logic goes for a toss. But that is Puri and he trusted his instincts to elevate heroism in this way. Hero's dream of an orphan home looked dramatic and flashback too looked forced. Ramya Krishna's entry as a police officer is powerful but later she was shown as a helpless person begging the protagonist.

Akash Puri tried his best to do justice to the role He performed well and even enacted daredevil stunts. However, he looked too young to do this role. Had he done this after a couple of years, he would have made a better impact. He expressed well and came with good emotions. He is not getting the perfect role to reach the next level on the screen.

Ketika Sharma sizzled redhot and she with her glamor treat gives sleepless nights to viewers. She however did not concentrate on her expressions but she also did not get a chance to show her acting talent. Ramya Krishna did a role different from her earlier roles and her characterization to some extent is good. Uttej did a small but important role. Makarand Deshpande is wasted and others performed accordingly.

Sunil Kashyap's music is good. All the songs are well shot in a beautiful and romantic manner. However, songs placement impacted the tempo, especially in the second half. As the heroine is introduced only at the fag-end of the first half, Anil Paduri is forced to include romantic songs mostly in the second half. Sunil Kashyap elevated the scenes with his background music. Naresh Kancharana's cinematography is good but could have been good in crucial moments. Junaid Siddique's editing could have been better as there are many drags that tested the patience of the viewers. Production values are good.

Puri Jagannath for long has been trying to establish his son Akash Puri as a hero. After failing to establish him as a lover boy in films like Mehbooba, he decided to thrust him into the masses with youthful mass entertainer Romantic. However routine story, screenplay, narration and missing romantic formula but forced erotic and gangster drama in the name of romance misfired. Considering all these elements, CJ goes with a 2 rating for Romantic.

Romantic movie review:  Akash Puri and Ketika Sharma starrer Romantic helmed by Anil Paduri, has hit the theaters today. Let’s see the story of Romantic.

Story:  Vasco De Gama Alberto (Akash Puri) is a young guy  who is a criminal  and wants to earn the money.  He and his childhood friend Annie join Goa’s notorious drug mafia lord Rodrigues’ gang.  He falls for Monica (Ketika Sharma).  Soon  Vasco D Gama kills Rodrigues and proclaims himself as the new mafia king of Goa. He kills an SI so ACP Ramya Gowarikar (Ramya Krishna) transferred to Goa from Mumbai to nab Vasco.  What happens next? Will Ramya nab Vaso? What will happen to Vasco and Monica’s relationship? To get these answers, one should watch Romantic on screen.

Performance:  Akash Puri in the role of Vasco De Gama has delivered his fantastic performance. His facial expressions, way of dialogue delivery are impressive.  He is in superb form, especially the ease and energy levels. Ketika Sharma as Monica performs well. Ramya Krishna as a sincere cop is one of the major highlight of Romantic.  Her act especially the climax, is  engaging. In the end, the way Vasco De Gama and Monica realize their love for each other has a lot of feel. Puri Jagnnadh and Ram Pothineni cameos are highlighted. Rest  of the cast of Romantic perform accordingly.

Technical:   The storyline of Romantic is interesting. Dialogues are in Puri Jagannadh’ style. Cinematography by Naresh Rana is alright and is pleasing to eyes. The picturesque Goa beaches and the rustic places are captured well by the cinematographer. The songs are good.  Sunil Kashyap sets the mood up for the film with his background music . Editing is fine.  Action sequences are well choreographed and the art department does a good job. Production values  are lavish.

Analysis :  The cinematography, dialogues, direction and actors’ performance form the magic. You can watch Romantic this weekend.

ఆకాష్ మునుపటి చిత్రాలు ఆంధ్రా పోరి, మెహబూబా చిత్రాలతో పోల్చితే చాలా మెరుగు పడినట్లు తెలుస్తోంది. ఈ సినిమా లో అద్భుతమైన నటనను ప్రదర్శించాడు. అతని కాన్ఫిడెంట్ స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్ మరియు డైలాగ్ డెలివరీ మెయిన్ హైలెట్ అని చెప్పాలి. చాలా కీలక సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆకాష్ సినిమా ను భుజానికి ఎత్తుకున్నారు. ఢిల్లీ భామ కేతిక శర్మ తన అందం తో ఎంతో మంది అభిమానులను సంపాదించుకుంటుంది అని చెప్పాలి. ఆమె నటన చాలా డీసెంట్ గా ఉందని చెప్పాలి. ఇది ఆమె తొలిచిత్రం.

ఈ చిత్రంలో రమ్య కృష్ణ సిన్సియర్ పోలీస్ పాత్రలో నటించి కీ రోల్ ప్లే చేశారు. రమ్య వాయిస్ ఓవర్ తో ఈ చిత్రం కథ సరిగ్గా వివరించ బడింది అని చెప్పాలి. సినిమా క్లైమాక్స్ చాలా ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. ఈ సినిమా చూసిన అనంతరం ప్రేక్షకులు మంచి అనుభూతితో బయటికి వస్తారు. వాస్కో మరియు మోనికాల మధ్య ప్రేమను బాగా చూపించడం జరిగింది. హీరో రామ్ పోతినేని ఉస్తాద్ అవతార్ లో ఒక ప్రత్యేక పాటలో మాస్ గా కనిపించడం జరిగింది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ చూస్తే, ఈ చిత్రానికి రొమాంటిక్ టైటిల్ ఎందుకు పెట్టారు అనేది అసలు అర్దం కాదు. రెండవ భాగం స్టార్ట్ అయిన 15 నిమిషాల వరకు కూడా ఈ చిత్రంలో యాక్షన్ కీ రోల్ ప్లే చేస్తుంది. అంతగా రొమాంటిక్ గా ఉండదు అని చెప్పాలి.

అంతేకాక ఆకాష్ తన వయసుకి తగ్గ పాత్రలో నటిస్తున్నారు. అతను పాత్ర ఇందులో పైకి ఎదగడంలో చాలా సిల్లీగా మరియు చాలా సింపుల్‌గా ఉంటుంది. హీరో హీరోయిన్ బ్యాక్ అందంపై మోజు పడటం అనేది కాస్త చీప్‌గా అనిపిస్తుంది. పూరీ జగన్నాథ్ సినిమాల్లో అలాంటి పాత్రలు సర్వ సాధారణం అని చెప్పాలి. హీరోయిన్‌పై హీరోకి ఉన్న కోరిక మరియు అతని వైపు ఆమె ముందుకు వెళ్లడం అనేది నమ్మే విధంగా అనిపించదు.

‘Romantic’ Telugu movie review: Voyeuristic drama at best

Though immensely talented, young akash puri is not quite convincing as a gangster.

The film begins with ACP Ramya (Ramya Krishna) arriving in Goa to nab the criminal who killed a cop on duty. Her target is Vasco as well. She narrates this so-called love story of Vasco and Monica and the reason for coming to Goa. Vasco Da Gama, a 20 something youngster turns into a gangster after eliminating the existing one. Why would we root for a smuggler and a criminal? There is a soft side to him as well in the story; he helps the poor by building houses.

The film is dominated with the scenes where the lead pair is lusting for each other. The first time, when Vasco (Akash) stalks Monica (Ketika Sharma), she asks him, “what do you want?” She keeps repeating the question and just when you are exasperated, she breaks into a song, What do you want? .

Though the film is directed by Anil Paduri, it has Puri Jagannadh’s signature frames and dialogues; the only remarkable thing is that the dialogues aren't risque like in the mentor’s movies. It has been toned down a bit but that doesn’t mean it is devoid of objectification. Vasco says, in this forest of no rules, Monica is just an animal and makes it clear to his associates that there is no love between them. Same with her, which is why throughout the film they can’t keep their hands off each other. Surprisingly, Monica tells her brother (Uttej) she has fallen for Vasco because there is no option. Be it the visuals, or dialogues, every scene between them is voyeuristic. Ram Pothineni appears for a brief period and so does Puri Jagannadh in a song and it is so clear that the filmmakers are having Ismart Shankar hangover and in a hurry to make Akash another Ustad.

Ketika Sharma makes a confident debut. Akash has the potential and will succeed someday, all it takes is the right selection of a script. Romantic as of now is overdramatic but you can watch for its visual appeal and music.

Romantic has got the attention it needed, thanks to lustful teaser, trailer and hard-hitting youthful dialogues. Puri penned the story, screenplay and dialogues. He is hoping that this movie will change the fate of his son Akash. Does Romantic have the stuff? Or is it just confined to the promos?

What Is It About?

Vasco Da Gama (Akash Puri) is a gangster who gets into smuggling to get rich, but he has a heart of gold. He funds the charity run by his grandmother Mary (Rama Prabha). He meets Mounica (Ketika Sharma) and is head over heels for her beauty. Vasco Da Gama kills a dishonest police officer who cheats him. Police department is serious on the issue and a special officer Ramya Gowariker (Ramya Krishna) is deputed to nab Vasco and thus end the wrongdoings in Goa. Vasco gets arrested and he gets a life sentence. This puts his love story with Mounica in a spot. Vasco and Mounica dare the law for their love. Will they win?

Performances

Akash, who was struggling with his acting in previous films, seems to have improved. Still he needs to improve a lot. He looks quite young, amateurish to pull off such a heavy role of gangster. While Akash tries his best, he is only half-successful. In romantic scenes, he does a better job. Mouthing mass dialogues doesn’t fit him.

Ketika Sharma’s glam show will make youth go berserk. She steals the show with her beauty. It is an absolute treat to watch her in romantic and intimate scenes. She sizzles in songs. Her revealing costumes and styling elevates her beauty.

Ramya Krishna shines with her performance notwithstanding that she is offered a badly written character. Still she manages to make her presence felt. She brought some seriousness to the film. Sunaina’s comedy works in parts. None of the villain characters are effective enough to take them seriously. Rama Prabha’s character is highly emotional and doesn’t fit into the film.

Technicalities

Puri penned the story, screenplay and dialogues for Romantic. But we wonder whether there exists a comprehensive story at all. It looks like he is retelling his old stories with different set-up and backdrop. It is a wafer-thin plot of a gangster’s love story and tries to give a youthful touch with ‘lust’. First-time director Anil Paduri has nowhere made his mark in the film. Film is well shot in the picturesque locales of Goa. Songs, though not great for ears, are beautifully picturized alongside beaches and roads.

Predictable Story Weak Rivals Flat Narration

Gangster films have been done to death. Many films inspired by God Father have been made in Indian cinema. Ram Gopal Varma has aced in it as he made a gangster trilogy – Satya, Company & D. But Puri tried to show the love story of a gangster. Even it is not something new as many filmmakers in the past have attempted. Puri picked a plot that has nothing much to elaborate.

One glaring problem in the film is that nothing is difficult for the protagonist Vasco as he gets rich easily with just one idea – how to loot a container, he gets to become don easily (when his boss gets accidentally killed and he takes over the gang) and he gets the girl he wants easily. All these look very cinematic and unconvincing. His only problem is the police who are chasing him and the law that tries to put brakes on his freedom and love. It is evident that the writing is lazy. Puri, who is supposed to write some scenes with brain, takes it lightly and just fills the scenes. Dialogues are squandered. This makes Romantic look very ordinary, routine.

One wonders why the rest of the dons/villains/goons in the film are so weak that they can’t challenge Vasco enough. In fact, it gives the feeling that there are hardly any villains left other than one (Samsung) who comes once in a while and participates in a shoot-out. Still, it looks very unconvincing as a young gangster Vasco Da Gama has no major threat as his rivals are too weak. This looks absolutely silly. In fact, Puri’s film doesn’t need villains. As the protagonists in his films are villains with negative shades! The heroes in his films are baddies too.

However, the film is not completely bad. It has its moments here and there. Puri, who knows the pulse of masses, gave some lustful scenes, dialogues to satiate their voyeurism. There are cheers, claps from youths for such scenes. There is a parallel drawn between the love for country and love for girls which looks interesting. Vasco tells Ramya: ‘I Love My Country’. Paisa Kharchu Ledu. ‘I Love You’. Sarada Teerchestadi. He also tells love is weakness and pain. He doesn’t want to be ‘weakened’ by it. At the end, he is madly in love with Mounica. All these are not convincingly told. There is a lot of inconsistency in the love/lust track which puts audiences in confusing. This takes away the emotional feel.

On the whole, Romantic is strictly catered to the set of audiences who want to see the heroine’s beauty. It may pull youths to cinemas. Family audiences should give this a skip.

Bottom-line: Vasco Da Gama (Vaddu Ra Mama)!

He joins the group led by the infamous drug lord Rodrigues in Goa, along with his boyhood buddy Annie. Vasco rises to the position of mafia kingpin in Goa quite quickly. Vasco kills Rodrigues following a botched cocaine deal and claims to be the new Goan mafia leader. He kills a SI in the process, and in order to capture Vasco, a devoted and merciless ACP named Ramya Gowarikar is sent from Mumbai to Goa. Simultaneously, Samsun, Rodrigues’ competitor, wants Vasco to steal his drug canisters, which are valued at crores of steel, and his gang is trying to capture him. Following a game of cat and mouse between the three factions, Vasco eventually realizes his grandmother’s dream of building new homes for his community. He then murders Samsun, but in the end, Ramya shoots him dead and admits that he respects her.

'Romantic' movie review: An assault on our senses

Puri Jagannadh proved that he regained some of his lost mojo through the mass entertainer iSmart Shankar. But in Romantic, wherein he provided the story, screenplay, and dialogues, is an assault on our senses with a string of tired cliches that you had seen in his previous films such as 143, Pokiri, and Heart Attack. The film is intended as a rom-com as much as it is a gangster drama, even if the comedy moves between double- meaning dialogues, regressive and plain pedestrian slang. Akash Puri is Vasco De Gama, a vagabond and a ruffian with his heart in the right place.

He is determined to go out of his way to earn money and has many ideas up his sleeve that even if he is caught by the police, he cleverly escapes from the situation by selling stories and giving enough gyaan, besides justifying why he joined the crime syndicate. As you might have guessed, he has a sentimental flashback about why and how he is greedy for money. Leading a life of crime, he runs into Monika (Ketika Sharma), the sister of a police officer, Jhon (Uttej), and continues to stalk her to express his feelings for her while kissing, hugging and caressing her.

The irony is that she is somehow fine with these as he is the most-wanted person for her! Then we have a funny gangster kingpin Samson (Makrand Deshpande) , adoting grandmother Mary (Rama Prabha), a publicity greedy artist Kathy (Sunaina) and an upright Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramya Gowa r ike r (Ramya Krishnan), who is after Vasco and also narrates his starcrossed love story. On paper, Puri Jagannadh offers spoiled characters that aren’t hard to empathise with.

But the moment you find yourself becoming involved with a character, the screenplay takes a quick turn onto the next, leaving you ultimately disconnected from their sufferings. The action scenes and never-ending gun fights bring a video game-ish monotony to it. The flashback and the motives of the protagonist too are laughably silly that it’s hard to take them seriously. The film also lacks a compelling villain, whose presence might have brought a real sense of danger to the proceedings. Ten minutes into the first half, it appears that the script is playing second fiddle to the notorious gangster drama –from sharp editing and edgy cinematography to a pulsating background score.

However, as the film progresses, the film requires that you apply neither common sense nor logic. Romantic does have its moments, but they are few and far between. For the most part, you are willing to laugh at even a handful of juvenile jokes that are ridiculously compiled. What’s not funny is the loud and over-the-type style of dialogue which seems to have become a trademark of Puri Jagannadh’s films. Despite these setbacks, Puri’s cheeky one-liners resemble the personality of the hero. While his cameo, as well as actor Ram’s, were received with a thunderous response from the audience.

As a director, Anil Paduri fails to strike a chord as he couldn’t translate Puri Jagannadh’s vision onscreen. Of the performances, Akash Puri, despite his sincerity, has only two expressions and he seems to be in autopilot mode throughout the film. Newcomer Ketika Sharma shows promise and the girl who played Annie is amazing. Ramya Krishnan as a short-tempered cop appears to be the only actor taking her job seriously! Every time I watch a Puri Jagannadh film, I believe that he cannot make a bad film than this. Much to my surprise, he exceeds my expectations all the time!

పూరీ జగన్నాథ్‌ తనయుడిగా ఇండస్ట్రీలోకి అడుగుపెట్టినప్పటికీ.. హీరోగా తనకంటూ ప్రత్యేక గుర్తింపు తెచ్చుకోవడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తున్నాడు ఆకాశ్‌ పూరి. ఆయన హీరోగా తెరకెక్కిన తాజా చిత్రం ‘రొమాంటిక్‌’. పూరీ కనెక్ట్స్ పతాకంపై పూరీ జగన్నాథ్‌, ఛార్మి సంయుక్తంగా నిర్మించిన ఈ సినిమాకు పూరీ శిష్యుడు అనిల్ పాదూరి దర్శకత్వం వహించారు. ఈ సినిమాతో ఎలాగైనా తనయుడిని హిట్‌ ట్రాక్‌ ఎక్కించాలని ప్రమోషన్స్‌ గ్రాండ్‌గా నిర్వహించాడు పూరి. ప్రభాస్‌, విజయ్‌దేవరకొండ లాంటి బిగ్‌స్టార్స్‌తో ప్రచార కార్యక్రమాలు నిర్వహించారు. దీంతో ‘రొమాంటిక్‌’పై హైప్‌ క్రియేట్‌ అయిది. భారీ అంచనాల మధ్య ఈ మూవీ నేడు(అక్టోబర్‌ 29)ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. మరి ఈ చిత్రం ప్రేక్షకులను ఏమేరకు మెప్పించింది? ఈ సినిమాతో పూరీ తనయుడు ఆకాశ్‌ హిట్‌ కొట్టాడా లేదా రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.

కథేంటంటే...

గోవాకి చెందిన వాస్కోడి గామా(ఆకాశ్‌ పూరీ) పక్కా ఆవారా. ఆయన తండ్రి ఓ సిన్సియర్‌ పోలీసు అధికారి. ఆయన నిజాయతీ వల్ల ఓ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ చేతిలో ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోతాడు. దీంతో వాస్కోడిగామా నానమ్మ మేరీ (రమా ప్రభ) దగ్గర బస్తీలో పెరుగుతాడు. డబ్బులు సంపాదించడం కోసం అడ్డదారులు తొక్కడం మొదలెడతాడు. వచ్చిన డబ్బుతో తన నానమ్మ పేరుతో మేరీ ట్రస్ట్‌ని నెలకొల్పి తన బస్తీ వాసులకు ఇళ్లు నిర్మించి వసతులు కల్పిస్తుంటాడు. పెద్ద పెద్ద నేరాలు చేసైనా సరే.. తన బస్తీవాసులకు ఇల్లు కట్టించాలనుకుంటాడు. దీనికోసం గోవాలో పేరుమోసిన ఓ డ్రగ్స్‌ ముఠాలో చేరుతాడు. అనూహ్య పరిణామాల వల్ల ఆ గ్యాంగ్‌కే లీడర్‌ అవుతాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో అతనికి మోనిక (కేతిక శ‌ర్మ‌) పరిచయం అవుతంది. ఆమెను చూసి మోహంలో పడతాడు. చివరకు అది ప్రేమగా మారుతుంది. మరోవైపు వాస్కోడిగామా గ్యాంగ్ ఆగడాలకు కళ్లెం వేయడానికి గోవాలో కొత్త‌గా అడుగుపెడుతుంది ఏసీపీ రమ్య‌ గోవార్క‌ర్ (ర‌మ్య‌కృష్ణ‌). వాస్కోడిగామాను పట్టుకొని, ఆ గ్యాంగ్‌ని అంతమొందించడమే ఆమె లక్ష్యం. మ‌రి ఏసీపీ ర‌మ్య వ‌ల‌లో వాస్కోడిగామా చిక్కాడా లేదా?  మోనిక‌తో మోహం ఏమైంది? నిజానికి అది మోహ‌మా, ప్రేమా? అనేదే ‘రొమాంటిక్‌’కథ.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే...

గ్యాంగ్‌ స్టర్‌ వాస్కోడి గామాగా ఆకాశ్‌ పూరీ అదరగొట్టేశాడు. కెమెరా ముందు ఎలాంటి బెరుకు లేకుండా నటించాడు. గత చిత్రాలతో పోల్చుకుంటే.. తన నటనలో మెచ్యూరిటీ ఎంతో కనిపించింది.  ఓ పెద్ద హీరో చేయాల్సిన సినిమా ఇది. అయినప్పటికీ.. అకాశ్‌ తన పాత్రకు వందశాతం న్యాయం చేశాడు. ఫైట్స్‌ తో పాటు రొమాంటిక్‌ సీన్స్‌లో కూడా అద్భుత నటనను కనబరిచాడు. చంటిగాడు, పండుగాడిలా వాస్కోడిగామా పాత్ర కూడా జనాలకు గుర్తిండిపోతుంది.

ఇక మోనిక పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేసింది కేతికాశర్మ. రొమాంటిక్‌ సీన్స్‌లో అద్భుత నటనను కనబరిచి కుర్రకారుకు చెమటలు పట్టేలా చేసింది. క్లైమాక్స్‌లో ఆమె ఫెర్పామెన్స్‌ అద్భుతమనే చెప్పాలి. ఇక ఆకాశ్‌ పూరీ తర్వాత ఈ సినిమాలో బాగా పండిన పాత్ర రమ్యకృష్ణది. ఏసీపీ రమ్య గోవార్కర్‌ పాత్రలో రమ్యకృష్ణ అదరగొట్టేసింది. ఆకాశ్‌, రమ్యకృష్ణ మధ్య వచ్చే సీన్స్‌ నువ్వా నేనా? అన్నట్టుగా ఉంటాయి. హీరో బెస్ట్‌ఫ్రెండ్‌గా దేవియాని శర్మ, గ్యాంగ్ శాంసన్‌గా మకరంద్‌ దేశ్‌పాండే, పోలీసు అధికారిగా ఉత్తేజ్‌, అతని భార్యగా యాంకర్ సునైనా  తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే...?

పూరీ సినిమాల్లో హీరోలే విలన్స్‌గా ఉంటారు. ఒక మంచి పని చేయడం కోసం చెడు మార్గాన్ని ఎంచుకుంటారు. ‘రొమాంటిక్‌’కథ కూడా అంతే. కానీ దీనికి కొంత ‘రొమాంటిక్‌’టచ్‌ ఇచ్చాడు దర్శకుడు, పూరీ శిష్యుడు అనిల్‌ పాదూరి. ఈ సినిమాకు పూరీ జగన్నాథ్‌ కథ, కథణం, స్క్రీన్‌ ప్లే అందించడంతో.. ఇది పూర్తిగా ఆయన సినిమాలాగే అనిపిస్తుంది. పూరి గ‌త సినిమాల్లో హీరోలు ఎలా ఉంటారో, ఈసినిమాలోనూ అలానే ఉంటాడు. `కర్లో యా మ‌ర్‌లో` అనే త‌త్వం హీరోది. ఇంకా మీసాలు కూడా పూర్తిగా మొల‌వ‌ని ఓ కుర్రాడు.. సడన్‌గా డాన్ అయిపోవ‌డం, ఓ గ్యాంగ్ ని మెయింటైన్ చేయ‌డం.. అంతా సినిమాటిక్‌గా ఉంటుంది.

అయితే లాజిక్‌లను పక్కనపెట్టి.. మ్యాజిక్‌ని నమ్ముకునే పూరీ.. ఇందులో కూడా తనకు తగినట్లుగా సీన్స్‌ రాసుకున్నాడు. ప్రతి సీన్‌లోనూ, డైలాగ్స్‌లో పూరీ మార్క్‌ కొట్టొచ్చినట్లు కనిపిస్తుంది.  సినిమాలో కొత్తదనం లేకున్నా.. తనదైన స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేతో ఎక్కడా బోర్‌ కొట్టకుండా చూసుకున్నాడు పూరీ. ఫస్టాఫ్‌ కొంచెం స్లో అనిపించినప్పటికీ.. సెకండాఫ్‌ చాలా ఫాస్ట్‌గా ఆసక్తికరంగా సాగుతుంది. సాంకేతికపరంగా చూస్తే..సునీల్ కశ్యప్ సంగీతం బాగుంది. పాటలు అంతంతమాత్రమే అయినప్పటికీ.. నేపథ్యం సంగీతం అదిరిపోయింది. ఈ సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం.. పూరి మార్క్ డైలాగులు. ఒక్కో డైలాగ్‌ బుల్లెట్లలా దూసుకెళ్తాయి. నరేష్ రానా సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది.  గోవా నేప‌థ్యంలో స‌న్నివేశాల్ని చాలా క‌ల‌ర్‌ఫుల్ గా, జాయ్ ఫుల్ గా తెర‌కెక్కించాడు.నిర్మాణ విలువలు సినిమా స్థాయికి తగ్గట్టుగానే ఉన్నాయి. చివరగా చెప్పాలంటే.. లాజిక్కులు పక్కనపెట్టి సినిమా చూస్తే.. ఎంజాయ్‌ చెయ్యొచ్చు. కానీ  కొత్తదనం ఆశించి వెళ్తే మాత్రం నిరాశే మిగులుతుంది.

Puri Jagannadh’s Akash Puri’s second film, Romantic has generated decent buzz among the audience with its promotional stuff. Co-starring Delhi beauty Ketika Sharma, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s check how it is.

Set in Goa backdrop, Vasco da Gama (Akash Puri) does crimes to earn money for his grandma. For the same, Vasco Da Gama along with his childhood friend Annie join Goa’s notorious drug mafia gang. Eventually, Vasco gets grip on Goa underworld. In the process, Vasco falls for a young musician named Monica (Ketika Sharma). This is the time ACP Ramya( Ramya Krishna) enters the scene to nab the drug gang in Goa. Will Ramya’s team succeed in tracking Vasco Da Gama’s underworld drugs mafia? How will the relationship between the lead pair distrubed with the police focus on drug dealers in Goa? Forms the rest of the story.

On-screen Performances:

Akash Puri has improved a lot in terms of acting and screen presence. His carried the film on his shoulders and pulled off the given role decently. Compared to his first film, Mehboob, Akash Puri showed good variance in the dialogue delivery.

Delhi girl Ketika Sharma is amazing with her screen presence. Her skin show in the songs will be a treat for the youth audience.

Ramya Krishna as a cop is alright. Her performance in the key second half proceedings is an added advantage for the movie.

Hero Ram made a cameo appearance in a special song in ‘Ustaad’ avatar which will be a treat to watch for his fans to watch.

Off-screen talents:

Music composer Sunil Kashyap is one of the main plus of Romantic as he lifts the proceedings with his catchy and impactful songs and impactful background score.

Editing work is just okay.Cinematography is good as the beautiful location in Goa are captured nicely.

Production values for this limited budget movie are alright.

Anil Paduri did a decent job as the director as he presented this dark romantic drama with an appealing narration. Though the story and screenplay provided by Puri Jagannadh remains us of his previous films like Poriki and 143, Anil’s with his directorial skills executed Romantic in a decent manner.

Positive Points:

• Romance between the lead pair
• Songs and background score

Minus Points:

• Lack of novelty in the story
• Unengaging screenplay

In an overview, Romantic is a youthful dark romantic flick that has enough elements such as romance and good songs to attract the targetted youth audience. On the flip side, lack of novelty in the story and screenplay makes the film a dull watch for general audience.

1. sj suryah and nani's performances are worth the watch.

One of the fans in his details review revealed that the writing of the first half of the film is commendable. He added, " Performances and characterizations are so good in this movie so far. 2. Amazing writing

While fans pointed out that the plot of the movie isn't new, they also agreed that the storytelling and treatment given to it makes it good. " By far the best Telugu movie I have seen this year. Amazing writing and Vivek played kabbadi with the screenplay. Every character has something to do and not a second was wasted. The Saturday concept makes sense when you watch it, though it does have some plot convenience," one of them wrote.

In the film, action speaks louder than words. The ac tions sequences are simply stunning, especially in the first half. They will leave you bowled over. Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire

Among this past year’s unexpected synchronicities, there’s now a shared space in the Venn Diagram that compares the American singer/songwriter Taylor Swift with the Indian writer/director Prashanth Neel . In 2023, both artists re-released their own re-recorded work, though Neel seems reluctant to describe his latest movie as a remake. Still, the pumped-up action fantasy “Salaar: Part 1—Ceasefire” shares a fair amount of its plot with “Ugramm,” Neel’s 2014 directorial debut. Both movies ultimately concern a civil war within an isolated fictional kingdom ruled by testosterone-fueled muscle guys and their female relatives. And now with “Salaar,” Neel’s fans will join Swifities in getting exactly what they want, a triumphal summary of their favorite artist’s style to date.

Neel has recently admitted that, with “Salaar,” he recast the manga-serial-dense story of “Ugramm” so that it more closely resembles his two-part action epic “KGF,” whose second half was the most expensive Kannada-language movie production to date. (now only tied for second place) Which is to say that “Salaar” also looks brownish-gold and seems to have been filmed on a studio set designed to look like a “ Mad Max: Fury Road ”-themed desert music festival.

It’s unusual, but not surprising to see Neel’s influence predominate in “Salaar.” The Pan-Indian blockbuster success of “KGF” was big enough to confirm a recent trend: popular directors are now being sold to their mass audience public as visionary auteurs, thanks in no small part to the strong appeal of “ RRR ” director S.S. Rajamouli’s brand of maximalist counter-mythmaking.

Before Rajamouli, Indian directors were rarely presented as being more important to a movie’s success than their marquee-topping actors. “Salaar” also stars Prabhas, who played Baahubali, the brawny warrior king, in “Baahubali,” Rajamouli’s trend-setting two-part historic romance. In interviews, Neel has said that some of the biggest differences between the stories of “Ugramm” and “Salaar” were inspired by Prabhas and his co-star Prithviraj Sukumaran . There’s still no way to look at “Salaar” without seeing this as Neel’s show, featuring some notable collaborators.

Even “Salaar”’s elaborate plot already feels like a Neel specialty, particularly its labyrinthine structure and heavy emphasis on flashbacks and tangential sub-plots. The first part of “Salaar” introduces viewers to Deva (Prabhas), a dreamboat with a past and a controlling mother ( Easwari Rao ). Deva loves children and also bonds with Aadhya ( Shruti Haasan ), an adult woman who also loves her mother (now dead) and is also hiding from a mysterious criminal organization. Aadhya and her pursuers lead Deva back to the powerful, hyper-industrialized Khansaar, an independent nation that looks like a steam-punkified coal mine and industrial slum straight out of “ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 .”  Deva’s return to Khansaar also reunites him with Vardha (Sukumaran), prince of Khansaar.

Deva and Vardha’s friendship threads the needle for Neel’s crazy quilt story, uniting flashbacks to climactic boyhood traumas—they were so close and only ten years old, it was 1985!—with perpetually escalating “Game of Thrones”-type feuds between warring Khansaarian leaders. Will Deva bring peace to Khansaar and re-unite with Vardha? No, of course not. This is a story about how two childhood besties grew up to be the kind of rivals whose hatred is so intense that it makes their story too “frightening to think about,” according to some appropriately over-ripe voiceover narration. That line’s especially funny given that it’s delivered right before the surtitle card (“PART 1: CEASEFIRE”) announces an intermission break.

“Would you like to know his story?” the narrator says about half-way through the movie. “His” obviously means Deva, but it could it just as easily mean Neel, who plays up every on-screen movement as if it were a major dramatic event. Neel tends to over-score action with slow-motion a reverb-heavy score and matching sound effects. He also favors Zack Snyder-y speed-ramping in his fight scenes, which alternately winds up and slows down set pieces so that they’re more about poses than choreography.

There’s no question that Neel’s the key to “Salaar”’s success, so it’s hard to get too upset for his reminding us with every italicized, bolded, and underlined flourish. This movie, like his last two movies, feels like a calculated attempt at synthesizing a few different trends into the next mega-trend, including the Pan-Indian appeal of co-stars Prabhas (Telugu language) and Sukumaran (Malayalam). Neel retraces his steps with bolder, harder stresses, like when a group of women chant and shake their ankle bracelets in unison to thank Deva for delivering them from a tyrannical Lord and his rapist son.

Neel’s become a more polished filmmaker since “Ugramm,” and has used what he’s learned to dig his heels deeper into a style that he’s clearly been thinking about for a while now. It shows, even if “Salaar” is just another adolescent fantasy about a righteous savior and a world-ending civil war, coming soon enough in “Salaar: Part 2.”

చిన్న సినిమా, పెద్ద సినిమా అనే లెక్కలు లేవు. కంటెంట్ బాగుంటే సినిమాను ఆదరించడానికి రెడీ అవుతున్నారు మేకర్స్. ప్రతి శుక్రవారం పెద్ద పెద్ద సినిమాలతో పాటు చిన్న చిన్న సినిమాలు కూడా రిలీజ్ అవుతుండగా ఈ వారం కూడా ఒక చిన్న సినిమా.. థియేటర్ లో రిలీజ్ అయ్యింది. దాని పేరే రేవు. ఇద్దరు సీనియర్ సినీ జర్నలిస్టులు భాగమైన ఈ సినిమా మీద మీడియాతో పాటు ప్రేక్షకులలో కూడా అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. హరినాథ్ పులి దర్శకత్వం వహించిన ఈ సినిమాను మురళి గింజపల్లి, నవీన్ పారుపల్లీ నిర్మించారు. ఈ సినిమాకి నేను రివ్యూ రాస్తానని దిల్ రాజు అనడంతో ఈ సినిమా మీద హైప్ క్రియేట్ అయ్యింది. అయితే ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? ప్రేక్షకులను మెప్పించిందా..? లేదా.. ? అనేది రివ్యూలో తెలుసుకుందాం.

రేవు కధ: సముద్ర తీర గ్రామం పాల రేవులో అంకాలు (వంశీరామ్ పెండ్యాల), గంగయ్య (అజయ్) అనే ఇద్దరు బావా బావమరుదులు. అయినా ఈ ఇద్దరికీ మాటలు లేవు. చిన్న నాటు పడవలో చేపలు పడుతూ ఉంటారు. పోటీ పడుతూ చేపలు పడుతూ కంపెనీకి అమ్ముకునే వీరికి ఆ ఊరు మొత్తానికి ఆస్తి పరుడైన నాగేసు (యేపూరి హరి) మరబోటు కొనుక్కుని పని లేకుండా చేస్తాడు. అయితే సముద్రంలోకి వెళ్లాలంటే నాటు పడవతో కుదరదు. ఇంజిన్ బోటు రెడీ చేస్తున్న సమయంలో వారికి, నాగేసుకి మధ్య గొడవ అయి నాగేసుని చంపేస్తారు. దీంతో వారి జీవితాల్లో పెను మార్పులు సంభవిస్తాయి. నాగేసు కొడుకులు ఇద్దరు ఊరిలో దిగడంతో వారికి వీరికి మధ్య ఏం జరిగింది? నాగేసు మరణం తరువాత వారి జీవితాలకు ఏమైంది? నాగేసు చావుకు కొడుకులు పగ తీర్చుకున్నారా? లేదా? అనేది సినిమా చూసి తెలుసుకోవాల్సిందే.

విశ్లేషణ: చిన్న బడ్జెట్ సినిమాలకు కథే బలం. ఆ కథను జనాల్లో రిజిస్టర్ అయ్యేలా ఎలా చెప్పాం అనేదాన్ని బేస్ చేసుకునే సినిమా రిజల్ట్ ఆధార పడి ఉంటుంది. ఇక ఈ రేవు సినిమా విషయానికి వస్తే కనుక ఇక్కడ కూడా కథనే కీలకం. సముద్రపు ఒడ్డున మత్స్యకారులజీ వితాలను ఎంతోమంది.. ఎన్నో సినిమాల్లో చూపించారు కానీ ఈ సినిమా వారి కష్టాలో మరోటో కాకుండా ఒక ఆసక్తికరమైన రివెంజ్ స్టోరీగా తెరకెక్కించాడు. ఉదయం లేచిన దగ్గర నుంచి సముద్రంలో ఉండే మత్స్యకారులకు అక్కడి రేవులతో ఉన్న అనుబంధం, వారు పడే కష్టాన్ని డైరెక్టర్ ఆసక్తికరంగా తెర మీదకు తీసుకొచ్చారు. ఇద్దరు ఫ్రెండ్స్ మధ్య పోటీ వారి జీవితాలను ఎలా మార్చింది? ఆ తరువాత ఇద్దరూ పని పోయిన తరువాత ఏమి చేశారు? లాంటి విషయాలను చూపించిన విధానం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. అయితే కథలో బలం ఉన్నా.. చెప్పే విషయంలో డైరెక్టర్ తడబడ్డాడు. కానీ నటీనటులు అందరూ కొత్తవారే కావడంతో ఇదేదో సినిమా చూస్తున్నట్టు కాకుండా ఆ ఊరిలో ఎక్కడో సీసీ కెమెరాలు పెడితే మనం చూస్తున్నాం ఏమో అని ఫిలింగ్ కలిగేలా డైరెక్టర్ సినిమాను మలిచాడు. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ అంతా లైటర్ వేలో నవ్విస్తూ అసలు సినిమా సిట్యుయేషన్ ను ఎస్టాబ్లిష్ చేస్తూ నడిపించిన దర్శకుడు.. సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో కొంత లాగ్ చేసిన ఫీలింగ్ తీసుకొచ్చాడు. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్ విషయంలో కూడా కొంచెం శ్రద్ధ పెడితే బావుండేదనిపిస్తుంది.

నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే ఒకరిద్దరు మినహా అందరూ కొత్తవారైనా కూడా చాలా బాగా చేశారు. ముఖ్యంగా లీడ్ పాత్రలు చేసిన వంశీ రామ్ పెండ్యాల, అజయ్ తమ పాత్రల్లో ఒదిగిపోయారు. ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ లో ప్రేక్షకులను సైతం కంటతడి పెట్టించగా స్వాతి భీమిరెడ్డి, హేమంత్ ఉద్ధవ్,సుమేష్ మాధవన్ తమ తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు. టెక్నీకల్ టీం విషయానికి వస్తే కనుక ఫైట్స్‌ చాలా స్పెషల్‌గా కంపోజ్‌ చేసినట్టు అనిపించింది. కెమెరా వర్క్‌ భలే అనిపించింది. ఒక తీరగ్రామంలోకి మనల్ని తీసుకుపోయినట్టే అనిపించింది. ఇక లిరిక్స్‌ కూడా ఎదో పెద్ద సినిమా రేంజ్‌లో ఉన్నాయి. మ్యూజిక్‌ వింటున్నప్పుడు సంగీత దర్శకుడు చితక్కొట్టాడు అనకుండా ఉండలేం అన్నట్టు మ్యూజిక్ ఇచ్చాడు.

పాల‌రేవు ఊరికి చెందిన అంకులు(వంశీరామ్‌), గంగ‌య్య(అజ‌య్‌_ మ‌ధ్య చేప‌ల వేట‌లో ఎప్పుడూ పోటీ ఉంటుంది. ఒక‌రంటే మ‌రొక‌రికి ప‌డ‌దు. నిత్యం గొడ‌వ‌లు ప‌డుతుంటారు. ఇద్ద‌రు క‌లిసిమెలిసి ఉండాల‌ని పెద్ద‌లు ఎంత చెప్పిన వినిపించుకోరు. నాగేశు (యేపూరి హ‌రి) పెద్ద బోటు కొని అంకులు, గంగ‌య్య‌ల జీవ‌నాధారాన్ని దెబ్బ‌తీస్తాడు. నాగేశుకు కంటే పెద్ద బోటు కొనాల‌ని అంకులు అనుకుంటాడు.

కానీ ఆర్థిక స్థోమత స‌రిపోదు. దాంతో అంకులు సొంతంగా ఇంజిన్ ప‌డ‌వ త‌యారు చేయాల‌ని ప్ర‌య‌త్నిస్తాడు అత‌డి ప్ర‌య‌త్నం ఫ‌లించిందా? నాగేశును ఎదురించేందుకు శ‌త్రువులైన అంకులు, గంగ‌య్య ఎలా ఒక్క‌ట‌య్యారు? ఈ పోరాటంలో వారు ఏం కోల్పోయారు? బావ‌నే త‌న జీవితం అనుకున్న సామ్రాజ్యం (స్వాతి) జీవితం ఎలాంటి మ‌లుపులు తిరిగింది అన్న‌దే రేవు మూవీ క‌థ‌.

ఇది వ‌ర‌కు రా అండ్ ర‌స్టిక్ క‌థ‌ల‌ను ఆర్ట్ సినిమాల‌కు ప‌రిగ‌ణించేవారు. కానీ ఇప్ప‌డు ఆడియెన్స్ టేస్ట్ మారింది. రా అండ్ ర‌స్టిక్ క‌థ‌లు కూడా బాక్సాఫీస్ క‌మ‌ర్షియ‌ల్‌గా పెద్ద విజ‌యాల్ని అందుకుంటున్నాయి. రియ‌లిస్టిక్‌గా క‌థ‌ల్ని వెండితెర‌పై తీసుకొచ్చే ట్రెండ్ పెరిగిపోయింది. రేవు అలాంటి ప్ర‌య‌త్న‌మే.

మ‌త్స్య‌కారుల జీవితాల‌తో...

మ‌త్స్య‌కారుల జీవ‌న విధానాన్ని, వృత్తిప‌రంగా వారు ఎదుర్కొనే ఒడిదుడుల‌కు యాక్ష‌న్‌, రివేంజ్‌తో పాటు ఓ ల‌వ్‌స్టోరీ ని జోడించి ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు హ‌రినాథ్ పులి ఈ సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించాడు. సినిమా లొకేష‌న్స్‌, యాక్ట‌ర్లు, విజువ‌ల్స్ అన్ని చాలా నాచుర‌ల్‌గా ఉండేలా ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు జాగ్ర‌త్త‌ప‌డ్డాడు.

రేవులో హీరోల‌కు ఎదుర‌య్యే స‌మ‌స్య‌ల విష‌యంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సినిమాటిక్‌గా ఆలోచించ‌కుండా వాస్త‌విక కోణంలో మ‌త్స్య‌కారులుఎలాంటి అడ్డంకుల‌ను ఎదుర్కొంటార‌నే అంశాల‌ నుంచే స్ఫూర్తి పొందుతూ కొన్ని సీన్స్ రాసుకోవ‌డం బాగుంది.

రివేంజ్ డ్రామా...

ఫ‌స్ట్ హాఫ్ మొత్తం అంకులు, గంగ‌య్య జీవితాల, వారి మ‌ధ్య ఉండే గొడ‌వ‌ల చుట్టూ న‌డిపించారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. చాలా డీటైలింగ్‌గా సీన్స్‌ను చూపిస్తూ వెళ్ల‌డంతో క‌థాగ‌మ‌నం నెమ్మ‌దిగా సాగిన ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది. సెకండాఫ్‌లో రివేంజ్ డ్రామాగా మారిన త‌ర్వాతే క‌థ‌లో స్పీడు పెరుగుతుంది. నాగేశుతో పాటు అత‌డి కొడుకులు వేసే ఎత్తుల‌ను అంకులు, గంగ‌య్య క‌లిసి తిప్పికొట్టే సీన్స్‌, యాక్ష‌న్ ఎపిసోడ్స్ ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయి. క్లైమాక్స్ ఫైట్ సీన్‌ను డైరెక్ట‌ర్ డిజైన్ చేసుకున్న తీరు ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది.

ప్రెడిక్ట‌బుల్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే...

క‌థ కంటే నాచురాలిటీ, విజువ‌ల్స్‌తో రా అండ్ ర‌స్టిక్‌గా చెప్పడానికే ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఎక్కువ‌గా ఆరాట‌ప‌డిన‌ట్లుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. నెక్స్ట్ ఏం జ‌ర‌గ‌బోతుంద‌న్న‌ది ఈజీగా గెస్ చేసేలా ఉంటుంది. ప్రెడిక్ట‌బుల్‌గా స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే ను రాసుకున్న ఫీలింగ్ క‌లుగుతుంది. హీరోతో పాటు గంగులు పాత్ర‌ల‌కు మ‌రికొంత డెప్త్‌గా రాసుకుంటే బాగుండేది.

పోటాపోటీ...

అంకులు పాత్ర‌లో వంశీరామ్ పెండ్యాల స‌హ‌జ న‌ట‌న‌తో ఆక‌ట్టుకున్నాడు. నిజ‌మైన మ‌త్స్య‌కారుడిగా అల‌డి లుక్ , గెట‌ప్ క‌నిపిస్తాయి. అజ‌య్ కూడా న‌ట‌న‌లో వంశీకి పోటీగా క‌నిపించాడు. విల‌న్ పాత్ర‌కు యేపూరి హ‌రి న్యాయం చేశాడు. స్వాతి భీమిరెడ్డి డీ గ్లామ‌ర్ పాత్ర‌లో ఓకే అనిపించింది.

క‌మ‌ర్షియ‌ల్ సినిమాల‌కు భిన్నంగా...

రా అండ్ ర‌స్టిక్ సినిమాల్ని ఇష్ట‌ప‌డే ఆడియెన్స్‌ను రేవు మెప్పిస్తుంది. రెగ్యుల‌ర్ క‌మ‌ర్షియ‌ల్ సినిమాల‌కు భిన్న‌మైన అనుభూతిని అందిస్తుంది.
