Should I be shocked that a movie titled Civil War confidently   stays apolitical while still co-opting imagery and vernacular from our very real reality? Yes, but in a way, I am not. Apoliticism, generally, is cowardly— but often it’s cowardly because it’s rooted in some sort of attempt to appease both sides— something I don’t think Civil War  aims to do or frankly, even cares to do.

As many have pointed out, it is a far more interesting movie in its discussion…

It's very funny to so obviously think you are making Come and See or Apocalypse Now for a post-January 6th America and instead end up with JCPenney Has Fallen .

Garland might have even had something here if he could've dropped the solemn, sanctimonious centrist anti-war art filmmaker pretension/moral hand wringing—we get it, war is ugly no matter which side is doing it and the adrenaline-junkie psychos who do the arduous work of documenting/bearing witness to it are important—and just fully…

I’m impressed by the hand wringing over this movie’s supposed “spinelessness” and “emptiness.” So many reviews complain that this isn’t the movie they had hoped or expected to see. It’s not what I expected, either. Some of this misperception can be blamed on the marketing, which framed the movie as some kind of political/cultural explosion. A24 posting a civil war map––depicting the Western forces, the independent republics, etc.––was meant only to stir up controversy and debate, toying with our expectations.…

17+ Best Movie Review and Ratings Sites (List)

best-movie-review-sites

In this article, we’re going to provide a list of the top, most reliable  movie review sites  on the internet.

Whether you’re a fan of a certain genre like horror or more into TV reviews than movies, we’re going to bring you a full list of the very best movie review and ratings sites out there in 2024.

First let’s cover some common questions about these movie review sites, film critique, how to make your own reviews, and more.

Let’s dive in!

Everyone’s a critic on everything these days… what’s the best movie review and ratings site out there?

Our list below is meant to be ranked based on credibility, overall popularity, and thoroughness.

Do they have a good ranking system in place to accurately rate movies?

Are they have thorough movie reviews?

Do they cover a wide range of titles?

What do people say about them?

All these questions factor into a site’s credibility.

If the reviews aren’t thorough, then what’s the point in going to that review site? You might as well just go see a movie you’re interested in and get other people’s opinions from your friends, family, and social media instead.

Also, apparently, there are some film critics out there who believe it is their job to tell everyone “how to think” about movies they’ve seen. That’s not always what people want or need from movie reviews sometimes. Each of us has our own individual tastes. We’d like to know which titles we should check out for ourselves! Assuming of course, if we haven’t already seen them.

And while this list isn’t a ranking of which site is the best, it should be pretty clear that our all-around favorite movie review and ratings site would have to be IMDb.

IMDb has it all! They have more titles than anyone else on this list, their rankings are accurate, they have more professional film critics with great credentials who write very thorough movie reviews…

Everybody knows IMDb. Critic or not, if you’re looking for a ton of movie data, IMDb’s got your back!

Who is the best film critic of all time?

Roger Ebert (1942-2013) is probably the most famous film critic of all time.

Most people reading this article have probably heard of his name. On top of that, how many other film critics have you heard of? Probably not a ton.

IMDb has a huge list of professional movie critics who write for them on their site. So, while there are many more great film critics out there… it’s safe to say that Roger Ebert is probably the best ever to do it.

His reviews went beyond just what he thought of a movie but tied it to the bigger picture of where we are in society and other broader perspective matters.

Is there such a thing as a movie reviews app?

There sure is!

Some of the sites below (mainly the big popular ones) have iPhone and Android apps that you can install on your phone and tablet devices for even better movie review access.

Is there anything other than just movie reviews that I can find on these sites?

Many movie review sites contain more than just movies. They cover television , video games , and other related entertainment topics as well.

They also contain movie data like ratings, movie trailers, news articles…

What makes a good movie review?

A good film critique should include all the following:

  • start with an opening line that draws the reader in and then introduce your thesis statement (or what you’re trying to express)
  • provide background information relevant to the topic at hand
  • give examples using quotations from the primary source material (a movie or TV show)
  • give a conclusion summarizing everything you’ve covered so far

If your goal is to write great movie reviews for any of these sites below, those are some of the elements you’ll want to keep in mind!

I saw a great movie the other day… can I review it?

Lots of movie review sites allow users to chime in and provide their own reviews.

Movies are a subjective thing, so keep your reviews as accurate and unbiased as possible.

Don’t just give it five stars because you loved it! Think about why you would recommend that people see this movie, what the best parts were, and then write up your review based on those points.

Write an honest review to help others decide whether they should see this film or not.

What do an IMDb score and IMDb ranking mean?

IMDb has two different scores for the movies it reviews.

There is the user score, which is the average of every user review.

The official IMDb score is a composite of all professional reviews of a given movie.

Rankings are then generated from the highest to lowest scores of a movie (often within a specific genre), based on the major professional reviews that have been made.

Best Movie Review and Ratings Sites in 2024

Let’s take a look at the best movie review and ratings sites in 2024.

IMDb is the world’s most popular movie review site and one of the best film sites on the web. It was founded on October 17, 1990 and has been going strong ever since.

IMDb is widely considered the foremost expert in the movie review industry online. With more than 1,200 movie critic reviews per day and about 600 million monthly unique visitors, it’s hard to beat IMDb.

What makes them the best movie review site?

Pros : They have a huge selection of films rated by critics with excellent credentials. With a massive database of more than 250 million titles, this website attracts a wide range of viewers looking to learn about movies they haven’t seen before or rediscover old favorites at home. IMDb also provides links to trailers for most movies, which is great if you want to know what all the hype is about!

Cons : IMDb is larger than any other movie review site on this list and can be difficult to navigate sometimes if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

#2 Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most well-known movie review and ratings sites on the web and provides thousands of user reviews posted by everyday viewers just like you.

Rotten Tomatoes is possibly second only to IMDb in terms of how many people visit their site each month (around 60-80 million).

The company contains professional film reviews from hundreds of big publications like Rolling Stone, Variety, and The New Yorker.

They also show what’s hot not only in the film world, but when it comes to TV as well.

What makes them one of the best movie review sites?

Pros : They offer both professional and user reviews – a rare find on large movie review sites.

Rotten Tomatoes is incredibly easy to navigate with dozens of filter options to help visitors pinpoint their favorite genres/artists/theatres, etc. You can also check out your local theaters’ upcoming showtimes directly from the site.

Cons : Some of their scores are slightly inflated compared to IMDB because there is no score ceiling (they go up to 100%). Also, it’s not always easy to tell which critics wrote which reviews.

#3 Fandango

Fandano is one of the leading movie ticket retailers. They also have an official movie review website too, which is updated with fresh reviews daily.

Pros : Fandango offers both their own user reviews as well as professional reviews from recognized critics across America.

Cons : Popular, but not as active as IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

#4 The Movie Database

The Movie Database is another notable movie review site for movies released in theaters, despite being based in the UK.

Pros : The TMDb site is filled with user reviews and information on films alike, making it easy to find any film you want by just searching for its title.

Cons : Many users opt for larger sites since any site in the movie and TV review niche is going up against IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

#5 Letterboxd

Letterboxd is a lesser-known movie review site, but one that gets rave reviews from its users.

Letterboxd is one of the best movie review sites because they’re all about social media   – which means that visitors have more opportunities to interact with others here than on most other movie review hubs.

Their slogan is “filmstagram” because the site is centered around generating an Instagram -like filter for your movie watching experience—but this means that only people with accounts on the site can leave reviews.

Pros : The interface is sleek and easy to use. The site also lets you keep track of what movies you’ve watched, in case you wanted to go back through your viewing history later on.

Cons : To write a review on Letterboxd, you have to sign up with an email address or Facebook account first. No anonymous reviews are allowed so some users feel limited by this feature.

#6 Metacritic

Metacritic is a website that aggregates reviews for media products (like video games, but also movies and TV shows).

Pros : If you’re interested in finding out what critics across America think about a movie (or game) before you buy it, Metacritic is your best chance at doing so.

Cons : Some users complain that this site puts too much stock into professional reviews compared to user reviews. Also, some movies do not contain enough reviews to generate a quality average score.

#7 IndieWire

IndieWire is more than just a movie review site – it’s also an industry news site.

Pros : The information on IndieWire is continually updated, making it one of the most reliable sources for current movie news. You can access their content free of charge too.

Cons : Most people visit IndieWire looking for the latest industry updates (not reviews), which means that you’re not going to find many (if any) user-generated reviews here like on some other websites. Also, their content is targeted towards professionals or those interested in breaking into showbiz or related fields rather than casual viewers and fans of film/TV alike.

#8 Yahoo! Movies

Yahoo! Movies is one of the most recognizable movie review sites in America.

They provide both their own user reviews as well as professional reviews from credible critics in the industry.

Pros : Yahoo! Movies is easy to navigate and lets you filter search results by type of release (DVD, Blu-ray, etc.). The site also has plenty of trailers for popular upcoming movies that are perfect if you’re trying to get an idea for what’s worth checking out on the big screen soon.

Cons : Like Yahoo in many verticals, it’s not as popular as it once was and is no longer the go-to when it comes to movie reviews.

#9 RogerEbert

RogerEbert is named after possibly the most famous film critic of all time, who wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in April 2013. In 1975, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.

Ebert’s brand continues through a dedicated movie reviews and ratings site.

Pros : The site’s design appears very clean, modern, and easy to navigate. Especially for casual users who just want quick notes on new films before heading off to the theatre.

Cons : This site only provides a few user reviews a day, some days none at all. RogerEbert also received criticism from its own readers when it stopped updating their database with films that had less than three stars (for some people, this meant many films Ebert himself reviewed were no longer considered worth seeing).

#10 SlashFilm

SlashFilm is a movie review site that includes photos, trailers, interviews, and other news about upcoming films.

Pros : SlashFilm has thousands of high-quality images to provide an interactive experience for users when searching for movies they might like. They also write several excellent articles each month detailing compelling topics in film/TV (for example, “The Most Underrated Meryl Streep Roles”).

Cons : There aren’t many user reviews available on this website, which could be disappointing for some visitors looking for that feature. SlashFilm is also not updated nearly as often as it should be. Also, their content isn’t focused on up-to-date info like industry news or blog posts, which makes it a less popular choice for film enthusiasts and critics alike.

#11 Moviefone

Moviefone is owned by AOL and is one of the most recognized movie review sites on the web. Like Yahoo!, the site provides both reviews from critics as well as amateur users.

Pros : The design is simple to use and easy on the eyes, which means you can spend more time reading reviews than trying to figure out how a layout works. Moviefone also has a stellar library of high-quality photos for popular movies that will leave you in the mood to watch some good TV.

Cons : The user reviews are too short sometimes – some only have three sentences before being cut off mid-sentence, leaving readers wondering what they missed out on! Additionally, Moviefone only provides the bare minimum of professional reviews from industry professionals. And, like many other movie review sites, their content is sometimes outdated and they don’t offer enough current-event news about what’s happening in Hollywood right now (e.g., “Why Ben Affleck is a Genius”).

#12 Blue-ray

Blue-ray is one of the most accurate movie review sites on the web thanks to its large database of hundreds of industry professionals and critics from around the world.

Pros : Blue-ray has a very sleek layout that’s easy to navigate, which will make casual users feel at home right away. Visitors can also search for reviews by their favorite stars or directors, which is great if you’re looking for insight from a certain critic who watches all Steven Spielberg films.

Cons : This site does not allow users to write reviews, which means it doesn’t have much content in general compared to Hollywood entertainment news websites like IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Blue-ray is simply an aggregator that pulls reviews from other movie review sites without actually providing any new content.

#13 What’s on Netflix

What’s on Netflix is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : This website is great for finding movies you might like to watch online, whether it’s streaming on Netflix or another platform. It also breaks down categories based on film genre (e.g., comedy, drama) to make browsing more efficient.

Cons : What’s on Netflix has a somewhat unappealing layout, making it difficult to navigate when trying to find specific types of movies to watch. Additionally, their content is quite dated compared to other websites with industry news and new blog posts about what’s happening in Hollywood right now.

#14 MyDramaList

MyDramaList is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : Visitors can write their own reviews on this website, which is great for users who want to share their own personal experiences with certain movies. It’s also very helpful for finding recommendations for family-friendly films or even animated features that are worth checking out.

Cons : This site has an outdated layout, so it might be difficult for some visitors to find what they’re looking for (e.g., specific genres or categories). Moreover, there aren’t many industry news updates here – most content seems to consist of blog posts about upcoming television series instead. If you want detailed industry news like what’s happening in Hollywood, try a website like Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb instead.

#15 Syfy Wire

Syfy Wire, from the SyFy channel, is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : The layout on this website is very clean and easy to navigate, which will be comforting for site visitors who are looking for family-friendly films they can enjoy with friends and/or their kids.

Cons : This website is mainly comprised of short blurbs about new television shows or actors instead of detailed industry news like what’s happening in Hollywood right now (e.g., box office sales, film festivals). If you’re looking for more than just promotional content, try a different movie review site with more content. Additionally, most user reviews skew towards positive ratings, which isn’t very helpful if you’re looking for impartial insight.

#16 MovieWeb

MovieWeb is another large movie review site, ranked among the top 5,000 most popular websites in America (around 6 million monthly visitors). They provide movie news, TV show updates, and reviews for all genres and types of films.

Pros : MovieWeb is structured cleanly like a blog and dozens of new articles are pumped out each day.

Cons : There aren’t many movie news updates here, which means you might have to search elsewhere if you’re looking for unbiased film industry insight. For example, there are no articles about what’s happening in Hollywood right now (e.g., box office sales) or even new blog posts about upcoming films in 2024.

#17 Taste of Cinema

Taste of Cinema is a movie review site from Russia that contains both user ratings and critic reviews.

Pros : The film list and actor list pages have a lot going on to help you find films and people quickly and easily.

Cons : Its reviews aren’t updated very frequently.

#18 Crave Online

Crave Online is an entertainment news site that has a movie review section.

Pros : This site is updated regularly with fresh content. The reviews here are also written by professional critics, unlike other user-based online platforms.

Cons : Crave Online looks a little outdated and hasn’t been updated in a while.

#19 MoviGuide

MoviGuide is another large movie review platform with its own official app for Android and iOS devices to make finding local theaters easier.

They also have a community forum where people can discuss movies released in theaters recently—and even vote up/down on different titles to influence future reviews.

Pros : It’s easy to find local theaters here. The app also has a cool flashlight-like locator feature where you can turn your phone’s flash on to light up theaters near your location if they’re not visible in the dark.

Cons : Most movie reviews are based off users’ opinions only here, with no official critics’ ratings included. There aren’t any new user reviews either, so it can be hard finding recent films that people have seen.

Pajiba is another large entertainment news hub with a movie section—but their articles mainly focus on newer films that have been released recently in theaters (or even to rent and buy online).

Pros : Pajiba has a lot of user reviews on their site, which is refreshing. Their film news is also updated daily with fresh content to make sure you don’t miss anything important.

Cons : Bad movies get more attention here than good ones do – so it’s hard to find positive opinions about titles that should be considered great. Additionally, their movie section isn’t very detailed compared to other sites like IMDb or Letterboxd. Not all critics’ scores are included either; only users’ ratings are displayed so you’d have to read through many different reviews before finding one from a professional critic.

#21 Top Documentary Films

Top Documentary Films is a movie review hub that contains user and expert reviews for all kinds of documentaries—not just those released in theaters or on TV.

Pros : Their site is fairly simple to navigate with good options for sorting through content (by year, most popular, etc).

Cons : The design isn’t very original and can be slightly hard on the eyes sometimes. The documentary page itself also looks like it hasn’t been updated in a while (with some titles missing and outdated information).

#22 Rateranker

Raterranker is another lesser-known movie review site whose slogan is “your opinion can make a difference.”

Pros : This site gives you access to both professional and user reviews for all movies.

Cons : User ratings are not displayed on this website, which makes it hard for some users to know what they’re getting into before clicking on a movie. It’s also not always easy to tell which critics wrote the reviews listed here.

#23 The Indie Handbook

The Indie Handbook is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : The site’s design is very minimalist, making it quick and easy to find most movie categories without scrolling too much. Visitors can write their own reviews on this website, which helps if you’re looking for comments from other regular users who have watched certain movies before. It provides great movie recommendations based on user-generated ratings and reviews, making it helpful when browsing the site for film suggestions to watch.

Cons : Movie ratings are not displayed on this website so you’d have to read through actual reviews before figuring out if a certain film is worth watching or not. This can be hard for some users who want to base their decisions off user ratings instead of just personal opinions.

#24 Box Office Mojo

Box Office Mojo is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : This website can help you find new titles for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime if you’re looking for something to watch. It’s also great for learning more about specific actors, directors, producers, etc., which can be helpful if you want to learn more about certain celebrities who have made their mark in the industry.

This is one of the most comprehensive sites for finding information about movies in general, which is great for making decisions when browsing online or visiting a local theater. It’s also helpful for learning more about specific actors, directors, producers, etc., which can be helpful if you want to learn more about certain celebrities who have made their mark in the industry.

What’s also interesting about this site is they disclose how much a movie has made at the box office worldwide so you can be better informed about what films to check out.

Cons : Visitors can write their own reviews on this website, but not many people take advantage of this feature so you might find yourself digging through old content online. Moreover, Box Office Mojo doesn’t provide many industry news updates. If you want detailed industry news like what’s happening in Hollywood, Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb might be a better fit.

#25 Flickchart

Flickchart is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films.

Pros : This website has an excellent layout with easy-to-read text, so it’s great for casual users who just want to browse content quickly. Flickchart also takes pride in its user-friendly features, such as the ability to save movies and track their progress while creating lists throughout the year. The challenges page allows visitors to view what other people are watching and create their own film lists based on similar titles or genres.

Cons : There aren’t many reviews on this website, which makes it harder for some users to know whether or not a certain movie is worth watching.

#26 Film Junk Fan Reviews

Film Junk Fan Reviews is a movie review site that offers both professional and amateur reviews of various films. What makes them one of the best movie review sites?

Pros : Visitors can post their own reviews on this website, which helps if you want feedback from other regular users who have watched certain movies before. The layout is designed with casual use in mind, making it easy for anyone to find whatever they’re looking for within minutes.

What’s also great about this website is its detailed rankings and film charts so you can easily see what’s trending worldwide and among specific groups like critics and the public.

Cons : This website doesn’t offer very many reviews or overall content compared to other movie review sites on this list, which can make it hard for some users to browse through the material.

#27 Collider Movie Talk

Collider is a movie review and news website that can be found online at collider.com.  It provides in-depth movie coverage from industry experts and critics, with articles about what’s happening in Hollywood right now (e.g., box office sales).

Pros : This website offers detailed analysis of the latest films to hit theaters, which will be helpful for site visitors who want to get up-to-date industry insight before deciding if a film is worth watching or not.

Cons : The layout on this website isn’t very clean, so it might be difficult for some users to find what they’re looking for (e.g., specific genres or categories). Additionally, there aren’t many movie news updates here – most articles consist of blog posts about new TV shows instead. If you want more than just promotional content and industry news updates, try a different movie review site with more content.

#28 Inside The Magic

Inside the Magic is a Disney-focused movie review website that provides detailed analysis from experts and fans alike.  This means they provide unbiased insight for superhero movies, family-friendly films, animated features, sci-fi/fantasy flicks, etc.

Pros : This site has detailed information about upcoming Disney film releases, which will be very helpful for site visitors who are planning to see the newest releases to hit theaters. Inside the Magic also has exclusive interviews with members of the cast and crew, so it’s a great resource for people who have an affinity for Disney stars.

Cons : The layout on this website isn’t very clean or easy-to-browse, so casual users might find themselves searching through content without being able to find what they’re looking for. Viewers should look at other movie review websites instead if they want something that looks more modern and accessible.

#29 Field Guide To Evil

Field Guide to Evil is a horror film review site that provides movie news updates as well as industry insight from critics and fans alike. What makes them one of the best movie review sites?

Pros : This website has a unique layout and design so it’s easy for casual users to find what they’re looking for within minutes. There are also lots of content options for visitors, including archives of recent articles and blog posts.

Cons : Since this site is part of a larger horror film blog, you’ll have to go through several pages if you want more than just movie reviews. Viewers should look at other movie review websites instead if they’re only searching for analysis on new films.

#30 Movies In Movies

Movies in Movies is a movie review website that offers both industry insight from critics and fans as well as information about upcoming releases.  This means visitors can find news updates about Disney films, superhero movies, crime flicks, family-friendly movies, etc.

Pros : This website has a clean and modern layout so it’s easy for casual users to browse through content and find what they’re looking for. There are also lots of content options that aren’t limited to movie reviews (e.g., TV show recaps/news), which will be helpful if viewers want more than just information on new films.

Cons : Since this site only focuses on Disney releases, it might not have as much industry insight as other websites on this list. Viewers should look at other movie review websites instead if they want something with more variety in its content offerings.

Conclusion: Best Movie Review and Ratings Sites

There are tons of movie review websites out there, but only a handful of them can actually provide unbiased insight to casual users.

The best movie review sites in 2024 will be those with clean and easy-to-use layouts so that site visitors aren’t overwhelmed by advertisements.

Viewers who want more than just information on upcoming releases should also consider other website options because not all movie review websites offer the same industry insights (and vice versa).

If you’re looking for one of the best movie review sites, check out any one of these top 5 choices: Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Fandango, The Movie Database, and Letterboxd.

In our opinion, IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes represent the top two in the movie review industry.

Bob Marley: One Love | Review

Is an icon really an icon if they haven’t a by-the-numbers biopic to their name? Perhaps not. It certainly seems that way this side of Bohemian Rhapsody . No doubt, the want for incisive commentary has somewhat petered. Hot on the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis , and just ahead of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s ode to Amy Winehouse, comes Bob Marley: One Love , from King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Phew, we can finally add the reggae preaching Rastafarian to Wikipedia. At last, he’s made it to perfunctory homage. You’ll learn next to nothing about the man himself here, of course, nothing you didn’t already know, but the tunes come thick and fast and there’s a lot of people saying ‘ye man’. Get that on the merch.

Madame Web | Review

Madame Web | Review

Contrary to popular belief, and in the face of dwindling commercial receipts, there are still a few terrific superhero films being made. Films like Blue Beetle , for instance. The sort you suspect would have performed much better had they enjoyed release back in the halcyon days of the early 2010s. Madame Web does not exist in this category. When it flops – and it will flop – superhero fatigue ain’t the reason. It is, let’s be very clear, not simply a rubbish comic book flick but a diabolical feature in its own right. There’s either a thrilling behind the scenes story here or Sony put way too much faith in the director of thirty-seven episodes of Doctors .

Argylle | Review

Argylle | Review

Argylle opens bad. Seriously bad. Dead-on-arrival bad. Offered up is all-star – Dua Lipa! John Cena! Superman! – Grecian espionage but one woefully written, dismally acted and laden with risible special effects. But, wait! What’s this? A story within a story? Now we’re talking. There’s hope yet. Hold on to it. Sure enough, the film that follows improves not merely on the first five minutes but much of its director’s recent work. Matthew Vaughn’s, until now, unstoppable descent into distaste finally desists for Argylle , an overlong but mercifully entertaining romp.

How To Write A Movie Review Blog Post in 9 Easy Steps

How awesome would it be to make money just by sharing your thoughts and opinions on movies?

I can tell you from experience – pretty. freaking. awesome!

Although YouTube and other forms of social media have the potential to earn you big bucks, none of them are quite as stable as owning your own real estate on the internet – a blog.

So if you want to build a successful, long-lasting career out of movie reviews then there are two important skills that you need to learn – how to start a blog and how to write a movie review blog post.

In this article, I’m going to cover all that I’ve learned in my 2+ years of blogging, many failures, and a few hundred dollars of income (after a year and a half of $0 in income) on how to write a movie review blog.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

What Is a Movie Blog?

A movie blog is an online site containing articles related to movies.

The movie blog can be more personal, containing one person’s journalistic reviews, thoughts, or insight on a movie or it can be a bigger organization that covers film topics from several different publishers.

How to Start a Movie Review Website – 4 Quick Steps

Starting a profitable movie review website is no easy feat. It takes time, patience, and consistency to make real headway. To get you started on the incredibly rewarding adventure here are 4 quick steps to help give you good footing:

  • Be prepared to invest time and money if you want to build a movie blog that is profitable.
  • You can focus on analyzing a specific part of popular movies
  • You can approach movies from a rare pov
  • You can review a specific genre of movies
  • If you don’t have your niche right away don’t hesitate to get started anyways. As you become more familiar with what is and isn’t available in the movie blog world, you’ll find where your voice really shines.
  • This is all part of solidifying your brand. Determine the atmosphere and the vibes of your blog site.
  • Choose a Unique Blog Name , that can speak to your movie blog’s theme. You can search for available website names here .
  • Choose a tagline that speaks to your movie blog’s purpose. My first tagline was “The realest movie reviews.” … yeah, I’m not proud of it. But the point is, start with something and you can refine your tagline as you learn more about where your voice fits in the movie world.
  • Pick 3 or 4 main colors that look good together and that you like because you’ll be using them a lot. You want people to see those colors together and know that you’re speaking before they even read your words.
  • Pick 2 or 3 fonts that look good together for your headings, subheadings, and body text.
  • Canva Pro has a brand kit that makes designing with your brand colors and fonts really simple.
  • Several hosting options are available to host your website, but Bluehost is the best option for first-time bloggers . They have incredibly cheap introductory prices (a year of hosting for as low as $33), quality hosting, and excellent customer service .
  • I walk through exactly how to purchase your first website in the two-minute video below. Click on this link to take you to Bluehost and you can follow along with me.

The video below is filled with some really helpful tips to get you started on blogging. This exact video is what kickstarted my professional blogging journey.

If you’re a beginner blogger who wants to make money with your blog, I highly recommend By Sophia Lee’s blogging course . If you gained anything from her video above, this course will be game-changing for you.

How to Write a Movie Review Blog – 9 Steps

how to write a movie review blog

You’ve got your movie blog website! Yaaayy!! Now the fun begins – writing and publishing your movie reviews.

Let’s break down the writing process into steps to help you find your stride when crafting your own movie reviews.

1. Plan your Content

In order to properly plan your content, you need to first learn about SEO & Keywords.

SEO is an acronym that stands for S earch E ngine O ptimization.

This means that you have to make sure every page and every post on your website is easily detectable and understood by big search engines like Google.

For example, you write a movie review for the film Titanic.

You want Google to easily be able to tell that you wrote a movie review on the film Titanic. This will get your review a better chance of being discovered by someone looking for a review of the Titanic.

But then you get this issue – when you look up “Titanic Movie Reviews” on Google there are 11,300,000 results. Good luck getting discovered among the sea of results.

So, to make SEO work a little better for you, try narrowing down your focus on the movie Titanic.

Too many times, I see movie review blog posts with titles like:

“ Die Hard | Review ” or

“ Fight Club | Review 2022 ” or

“ The Godfather Movie Review ”

And honey, all I gotta say is that your stunning review is going to get drowned out by Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert. Your review is not going to get discovered unless people are already specifically following your blog. Even then, it doesn’t mean they’ll read everything you post.

So when you want to create a movie review that gets discovered, you have to focus your review on Google search terms that are being neglected or that have not been well-answered.

This is where keywords come into play.

A keyword is a word or phrase that labels your article so that Google knows what your article is about.

So back to our Titanic example, instead of having the keyword and title of your review (since your keyword should definitely be in your title) as “Titanic Movie Review”, you might change your keyword/title to “Titanic ‘I’m Flying’ Scene Analysis.”

When you search this updated title in Google, there are results close to this answer but nothing exact. So try to really nail this review of the “I’m Flying” scene in Titanic on the head and it could end up ranking on the first search page of Google.

There are also a lot fewer search results – 1,240,000 – so less competition than simply having your keyword/title be “Titanic Movie Review”.

So the next question you may ask is, how then can I find the best keywords to maximize SEO for my movie review blog post?

Well, hang tight because I’m going to show you a few clever tricks I use when searching for a good topic to focus my movie review on.

Tips/Tricks/Tools for Keyword Research:

The Google Search Bar

  • The Alphabet Method – type in the movie you’re researching for, followed by just a single letter of the alphabet, and see the top search options that pop up in the Google dropdown suggestions. Those are common search terms that people are looking for. View the gif below to see an example of the method I’m talking about. I use this for every movie I plan to review to give me ideas on what to write about.
  • The Question Method – similar to the Alphabet Method, type in the movie you plan to review and then type in a question prefix word like “who, what, when, where, why, how, or ‘is the’…” before your movie to see what questions Google is getting about the movie you’d like to review. View the gif below to see an example of the method I’m talking about.

Google Ads Keyword Search Tool:

  • In Google Ads and under the planning tab there is the option for “Tools and Settings.” Click on Planning and go to the Keyword Planner. The Keyword Planner will give you the opportunity to input keywords and see how often those keywords are researched in Google and how much competition those keywords have. I try to aim for keywords with at least 100-1k monthly searches and low competition.

Keywords Everywhere

  • Keywords Everywhere is an extension add-on for Chrome or Firefox that gives you search volume data and trend data for any keyword you input in a search bar. Every time I look up a keyword on Google, Keywords Everywhere gives me data on how popular that keyword has been over the course of time, trending keyword options, related keywords, and more.

The Google Search Bar, Google Ads Keyword Search Tool, and Keywords Everywhere are just a few really useful free tools you can use to help you find a good keyword for your movie review.

For more knowledge on keywords, SEO, and starting a blog I definitely recommend this blogging course . I got a lot of my juicy tips above from it.

2. Watch the Movie

I know this step is often overlooked so be sure that you actually watch a movie first before the review.

And when you watch the movie, keep your main keywords in mind.

Since we’ve decided to focus on the “I’m Flying” scene in Titanic, when we watch it, we’ve got to pay extra close attention to the details of this scene so that we can write a riveting review around it later.

It pays to watch the movie within a day or two that it comes out in theatres or on a streaming platform.

When you post a review while the topic is still hot, it gives people a greater opportunity to find your review and it also allows you to beat the competition when ranking on Google for certain keywords.

And even if the movie isn’t a hot topic right now but you still want to review it, do it. Sometimes trends come back around or the movie comes out with a second installment getting people back into doing research on the first one.

This high-value course bundle is made for bloggers who want to make money efficiently.

3. Take Notes Immediately After

When watching a movie on a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu, try to scribble notes as you watch since you can always rewind if you miss something. In theatres, it’s a bit harder because it’s dark and there’s no rewind button, so take notes immediately after you finish watching the film.

This is so that your thoughts and emotions towards the film are still fresh and easy to remember.

Either take physical paper notes, type your thoughts into a notes app on your phone, or record your voice with your thoughts right after the movie. Mental notes expire after a few hours so make your notes physical as soon as possible.

Again, be sure to focus your notes around what you found out were popular keywords for the movie and answer the questions people want answered.

This notebook is perfect for scribbling movie notes .

4. Start Drafting & Create Structure

So, you have a good idea of your keywords, you’ve watched the movie, and you have some notes on notable moments in the film. Now comes the part that can be the most daunting – drafting the movie review.

Include the Essentials

In every movie review there are three elements that are essential to a well-rounded, thoughtful piece:

  • A Conclusion
  • A Final Rating

A synopsis is a non-spoiler summary of what the movie is about. This should be placed near the beginning of the review before you get into your opinions.

A conclusion summarizes your main point at the end. What is your overall thought on the movie? Someone should be able to read the last paragraph and get a gist of everything you said earlier in the review. Your conclusion is what you’re really trying to say but condensed into a few sentences.

Final important inclusion – your rating. It’s not a review without a rating. Whether you want to do your rating out of 3 points, 5 points, 10 points, or even 100, whatever scale feels right to you and makes sense to readers, go for it.

Don’t make your scale out of 46 with 46 being the worst and 3 being the best. Make it easy to understand. Make it make sense.

Tips/Tricks/Tools for Drafting a Movie Review

  • The Freestyle Method

This may not work for everyone but sometimes just writing whatever is on top of your mind reduces the intimidation of a plain white document and gets the creative juices flowing.

To do this Freestyle method you must first start with this mindset: “Write the worst movie review known to man.”

This will help take the pressure off of yourself to write perfect, sound perfect, or to have your grammar sounding goodly.

The second mindset of freestyling is “Don’t look back.” We’re not editing anything in this stage, just getting all those overflowing thoughts on paper.

This strategy is best when you’ve finished watching a movie and are just overwhelmed with things to say.

A good example of a freestyled review is this one here . It’s a little unhinged yet finds a way to stay focused on the main point of contention with the film.

  • Create a List

10 funniest moments, 3 surprising cameos, 5 most heart-breaking quotes…

If there is a pattern in the movie that can be put into a list, then go ahead and just list them out.

With each item on the list, add a few sentences to explain and justify why it’s on the list.

It’s also good to include some images for each listed item if possible just to add some liveliness to the review.

Not only are lists an easy way to summarize and discuss main plot moments, but they are also great for SEO. Lists are very easy for people to follow and let people know exactly what to expect from spending their time on your review.

A good example of a listed review is this movie review here . This one was easy to write because this movie is brimming with hilarious moments. The review also got a lot of page views and positive reception because of the ease of reading it and relating.

  • Use a Movie Review Generator

If you’re having a really hard time knowing where to start with a movie review or just feel unmotivated, I highly recommend giving a movie review generator a try.

The Movie Review Generator is a tool created for movie review inspiration and guidance. It’s an electronic template that will crank out a full review after you input a few words, phrases, or make some dropdown selections.

The Generic Movie Review Generator is a good place to start if you really don’t have a clue about what to say. It’s very Mad Libs style and within a few minutes, it’ll create a whole ~ 300-word review for you that you can customize any way you see fit.

The Guided Movie Review Generator is the panacea to film critics’ writer’s block. It breaks down each step of the review process to make writing a review less daunting. It takes a little bit longer than the Generic Movie Review Generator since it’s more in-depth but when I tell you it cut down the time it took me to write, edit, and publish a movie review from 6 hours to 2 hours!!!! — definitely give it a try next time you’re stuck and let me know how it works for you.

This review was created with the Guided Movie Review Generator.

No lie, this is the easiest way to start off a movie review especially when you don’t have anything particularly remarkable to say about the movie.

Some movies inspire a lot of thought and some don’t but it’s nearly impossible to create a profitable movie blog without at least semi-consistently posting content. So you gotta find a way to FIND something to say even if it doesn’t immediately come to you.

Using a movie review generator is a great tool for some drafting inspiration.

5. Edit Your Writing

After completing your draft, no matter how rough it is, move your draft over to a brand new post page on your website for editing.

Editing within your website will allow you to utilize SEO plugins, like the Rank Math plugin, to analyze your reviews in order to make sure it’s fully optimized for easy discovery on search engines.

So first, insert your keyword into the Rank Math focus keyword box. Given the earlier Titanic example we would put “Titanic ‘I’m Flying’ Scene Analysis” in as the focus keyword.

After you do this, Rank Math will analyze your article to see how well it adheres to the keyword you want to rank for. The goal is to get the keyword score as high as possible and into the green range.

Go through all the SEO recommendations in the Rank Math tab:

  • Come up with a title that includes your keyword
  • Add the keyword into your meta description
  • Add the keyword in your permalink
  • Find ways to naturally sneak your keyword throughout your movie review
  • Add images with the keyword as your alt text
  • Etc.., Etc…

After you get through the suggestions on the Rank Math tab, go through your draft again and group each paragraph under bigger themes, sections, or schools of thought if you haven’t already.

Don’t be afraid to get rid of sentences that don’t have a place within the bigger discussion.

Use short paragraphs, an eye-catching title, and break up your article with images, separators, videos, lists, anything to break up the monotony of plain words.

Include transitions from paragraph to paragraph and from section to section.

Make sure everything is easily comprehensible, words are spelled correctly, and your grammar is good – become a critic of your own writing.

But at the same time – don’t lose your voice. There’s no need to be stoic, boring, or academic, just be clear, easily comprehensible, and search engine optimized.

6. Include Images

Looking at a large chunk of words can be a bit overwhelming so it’s a good idea to break up your words with some images. You don’t need to overdo it but at least 1 or 2 is nice.

Near the beginning of the article, around the synopsis, include an image of the movie.

Now, images like movie posters can be a finicky thing because you can run into legal problems.

Images that you find online are often the intellectual property of someone else so you can’t use them without permission. Because of this, you have to find movie images that you’re legally able to use.

To learn more about avoiding legal problems with your blog read this .

Tips/Tricks for including images in your movie blog:

Register with an EPK company

  • Go to EPK.TV and under the login button, there is an option to register for an account. If they accept you, you’ll have access to tons of movie images and behind-the-scenes footage.

Create your own movie poster s

  • Here’s an example of a movie poster made with Canva Pro that did particularly well at bringing people to this site from Pinterest .

Behind Her Eyes Review

  • I LOVE gifs.
  • Giphy is an online collection of gifs and is connected to WordPress. So if you use WordPress, you can easily insert Giphy’s gifs into your posts. With Giphy, they insert their own link and information on your page along with the gif you select which isn’t the worst but can be a bit annoying (hover over the gif above to see what I mean). And also, if anything happens to their website or the gif you used gets deleted from their site then you have an unsightly hole in your page. Besides that though, if you vibe with gifs, they’re a fun way to break up a blog post.

One last thing to keep in mind with images –

Be careful of the file weight and size of images, gifs, and videos on your blog site since if an image takes up too much space, it will slow your website down. Google doesn’t like slow websites and will likely rank you lower if it sees your website is slow. There are tons of plugins to speed up your website but none of them has worked as well as Smush and WP Rocket in my case.

7. End it right

Invite people to comment, discuss, and read more of your content before closing out the review.

Encouraging discussion is a good way to get others more engaged in your reviews and invested in what you have to say. It’s also a good way to get feedback on your content.

Include a call to action. Sometimes it’s as simple as just asking. Ask readers to comment, like, subscribe, and share your posts.

8. Customize Settings & Post Data

Before you post, make sure you update all of your post settings. This includes selecting the categories your post falls under, uploading your featured image for the post, and inputting tags for the post.

If you’re using Rank Math Pro be sure to customize the Movie Schema to include your editor rating for the movie along with the movie title, director, and release date so that Google is aware that you’re reviewing the stated movie.

The post settings, the categories that you place your blog in, and the featured image are important aspects of your post that will help draw readers to your movie review. So, don’t forget to update those settings before posting.

9. Final Preview & Post

Preview your final draft and give it a quick read before posting. Read it as if you’re a visitor to your site. Are you getting bored? Are you skipping certain chunks? Be mindful of it and make the necessary changes.

Double-check before posting that you’re satisfied with the permalink because redirecting links, later on, can make your website slower.

Be sure your Rank Math Score is in the green range and that your post is SEO optimized for your keyword as much as possible.

Finally, breathe in – POST YOUR REVIEW – and breathe out.

Wonderful. You did it. You wrote a ~stunning~ movie review.

Now, we let Google do its thing and get back out there to wrangle more films under our belts.

Hi, thank you for the valuable information. Could you please tell me where to take movie posters or celebrity images for blog? As most of these images are copyrighted.

Some movies have images available for press use on the website EPK.TV. For Disney movies, they house electronic press kits (EPK) on their own website so you can just look up the movie name with the words “EPK” and it’ll take you to the website where Disney has images and interviews and BTS footage made specifically for press and to get the word out about the movie.

You can also filter out Google search images to find pictures that are not copyrighted. You can go to the image search of Google, then go to “Tools” then “Usage Rights” and then filter your search to only include images for “Creative Commons licenses” as these should be ok to use.

When I can’t find an image through an EPK, I just use the image from IMDb . Although this is not technically the most legal way to go about obtaining images, as long as you’re not using the images on products that you’re selling, you most likely will be fine.

I also will use screenshots from movies as well in articles but I don’t put the images on products for commercial use, just for reference which hopefully falls under fair use laws .

When in doubt, I just link and credit back to the original source of the image. If there is an issue with the image, then the owner will usually just contact you to take it down. You’ll have to be more prudent with the images you use once your business becomes bigger so I’d recommend a lawyer at that point.

This is not legal advice as I’m not a lawyer at all. This is just what I do for the time being. The best bet is always to get your images directly from the studio that is creating the movie but as a small time blogger, this is not possible right away so EPK.TV, or go to the studios website as they usually have images for press use available there as well.

Hope this helps!

I’m so glad it’s working for you! Happy to help 😊

Hello! This is a wonderful article, thank you! I’m in the figuring out stage for my period drama blog. 😊 Could you please share more about EPK.TV? Particularly, will it have images for movies in the 1990s (Pride & Prejudice BBC for instance) or is it just for newer films? Thanks so much! Ellie

Hi! Glad you found the article helpful 🙂 With EPK.TV, usually they only have publicity packages for newer movies and they usually expire a few months after the film comes out. When I can’t find any posters through EPK.TV I usually just search on google “[the movie/tv name] EPK” and sometimes the studio website has it or under Google images I’ll filter out the images under Usage Rights for something with a Creative Commons license. Hope that helps:) All the best with your period drama blog! 😊

Thank you so much for the kind and thorough response! You’ve given me some great ideas and I am truly grateful! I’ll try the filtered Google search! Kind regards, Ellie

Of course! Thank you for commenting 🙂

How to Make a Movie Review Blog to Entertain the Masses

Make a Movie Review Blog

Movie review websites are extremely popular. There are a lot of them out there, and more often than not, you probably visit some of them before you go see a movie. That being said, have you ever wanted to create your own movie review blog? Well, then you are in the right place.

Having your own movie review blog will allow you to post your own movie reviews for everyone to see. You will have the ability to format your movie critic blog in a number of different ways. You can do full write-ups, use a star system, or a 1-10 scale. Whatever you decide, having a website so that you can be a movie blogger can be exciting.

Are you not sure where to start? No problem, as I am about to show you what to do in order to easily start your own movie review blog. Follow the steps as they are laid out. Doing so will make the process as smooth as possible.

What You Need to Build a Movie Review Blog

There are several things you need to do to complete the process of building a website for movie reviews. Putting things in the right order and creating a solid process will make all the difference in the world.

The first thing you want to do is to create a website checklist. These are things you want to have ready to put on your site, or have ready to use as part of the process. If you have a list, fantastic! If not, then here are some suggestions:

Movie Review Blog Checklist

  • Content (have some reviews ready to post)
  • Logo / Branding
  • Contact Info
  • Choose a Writing Style
  • Schedule (for posts)
  • Rating Scale

Having these things ready to roll will make the rest of the process much easier.

Domain Name and Web Host

Once you have your checklist in place, it is time to go get a domain name and web hosting. You are going to want to find a domain name that fits you well and expresses what all you are trying to do.

Remember, there are already a lot of domain names taken, so you might not find exactly what you want at first. That being said, try playing with the words a little. If that doesn’t work, then use a different domain name extension . There are so many available now that you should be able to find what you want.

Finding a good web host is critical. You want one that gives you all the tools you need to get started.  GreenGeeks web hosting is a perfect fit for what you are trying to accomplish. Not only will they provide you with everything imaginable to make the process of building a movie review blog easy, but they will also give you a domain name.

Keeping everything housed under one roof makes the process easier as well.

Installing and Using WordPress

There are several good CMS ( content management systems ) available that you can use to build your blog to review films. That being said, I am suggesting you use WordPress for a number of reasons.

For one thing, WordPress is very user friendly and will allow you the flexibility to build and design just about any way you want. Since the project is open source , thousands of developers have contributed and made it very popular. For that reason you won’t have to look very hard to access resources and tutorials that can help you through anything WordPress related.

WordPress is also very secure. Yes, there are other things you can do to make your website even more secure , but the platform as a whole is very strong.

You can also install WordPress very easily and get it ready to go. You can use the one-click installation process provided by your web host cPanel . Or, if you prefer, you can also install it manually as well. Either way, you will be up and running and ready to build in a few clicks.

Choosing Themes and Plugins

One of the many major upsides to using WordPress is its library of themes and plugins. There are tons of themes that can take your website where you want it. The plugin repository is very impressive as well. If you want to accomplish it, there is probably a plugin for it.

That being said, you may be a little lost if this is all new to you. You want to search for themes that will give you the right tools for building a solid movie review blog. Here are a couple to look at if you are having trouble.

Moview theme for movie review blog

Moview is a state of the art movie and tv show review theme that will allow you to create a stylish and modern movie review blog. It comes packed full of content that will help get your website to the next level. Definitely worth checking out.

Sequex theme

Sequex is another movie review based theme worth looking at. It is a very powerful theme that can turn your website into a movie-style database. It gives you the ability to add your own movie reviews, while at the same time adding a vast database that your website visitors can use.

When it comes to choosing plugins for your website, there are a couple of things to remember. For one thing, there are certain plugins every site should have to make everything run smoothly.

You also want to make sure you have a good SEO plugin running, as well as a plugin that allows you to properly optimize and compress images . There are also niche specific plugins to consider.

Here are a couple that may be of interest to you when adding some to your movie review blog.

Mas video plugin

MAS Videos is a solid plugin that allows you to create and list, movies and television shows. Build and add and make this portion of your website look like YouTube or Netflix. This is a plugin to consider if you want to spice up your movie review blog.

Rating-Widget: Star Review System

Rating widget for movie review blog

The Rating-Widget: Star Review System plugin allows you to easily add user-friendly star ratings on posts, pages, comments, WooCommerce, BuddyPress and bbPress forums. You can use them to add star ratings to certain things, or even allow your site users to click and add star ratings themselves.

Marketing Your Movie Review Blog

Now that your movie review blog is up and running you are about to have your own film critic blog. It is time to get the name of your site out there and start getting visitors.

Here is a list of ways you can market your movie review blog.

  • Social Media
  • Advertising
  • Write Reviews for Other Websites
  • Allow Guest Reviews on Your Site
  • Build an Email List
  • Install Google Analytics
  • Go to Forums
  • Post Links on your Social Media Pages

Having your own movie review blog can be fun and entertaining. Maybe you have been wanting one for a while and you were just not sure where to start. Following the steps above should allow you to get your own website for movie reviews up and online in no time at all.

Good luck to you and enjoy writing those movie reviews!

🍿 How To Start a Movie Blog in 10 Easy Steps

Photo of author

Starting a movie blog is a fun and lucrative idea.

Not only do you get to watch your favorite movies and write about them, but you can also develop a following of like-minded movie lovers to share your thoughts with. You can even earn a substantial income if you’re persistent.

At Authority Hacker, we’ve spent over a decade helping 14,000+ students create profitable websites – including many in the movie blog niche.

This 10-step guide to starting a movie blog will help you follow in their footsteps.

Why Start A Movie Blog

Whether you’re a film buff or simply enjoy watching movies during the weekends, there are several compelling reasons to start a movie blog and give your passion an online platform.

For starters, you can make money from your movie blog  by running display ads, promoting streaming services, selling movie merchandise, and leveraging a host of other monetization strategies. In fact, the average entertainment website makes $4,416 per month  – that’s a full-time income in many areas of the world.

Also, sharing your opinions about various films  on the internet allows you to connect with fellow cinephiles and start an engaging discussion that can potentially  foster a community  with you at the helm.

And as you grow and become a popular movie blogger, you can potentially secure interviews with actors and directors  during press tours.

Examples of Successful Movie Blogs

Before you jump straight into movie blogging, it’s smart to check out what a successful movie blog looks like.

Here are a few examples of outstanding movie blogs for inspiration:

screen rank homepage

Screen Rant publishes engaging listicles and deep dives into movie and TV theories, appealing to both casual viewers and dedicated fans.

Slash Film homepage

Slash Film stands out for its timely movie news, exclusive interviews, and the latest scoops in the movie world.

Film School Rejects homepage

Film School Rejects offers a unique blend of reviews and commentaries catering to aspiring filmmakers and critics.

How To Start A Movie Blog in 10 Steps

If you’re ready to start a movie blog, here’s a clear step-by-step guide on how to get started:

1 Narrow Down Your Movie Niche

Movies are a broad niche, and most people are interested in specific genres – some action, some romance, some big-budget blockbusters, some low-budget indie dramas, and so on.

Interest can also vary based on the type of content. Some want to read short movie reviews, while others look for detailed film analysis, news updates, or behind-the-scenes looks.

Building a movie blog that caters to all these different tastes is an ambitious undertaking that’s not going to be possible for a single blogger. So when starting out, it’s better to niche down and focus on a particular genre of a type of content.

Here are some examples of movie sub-niches for inspiration:

  • Focus On a Specific Genre: A movie review blog focused on thrillers, romances, etc.
  • Foreign Films: Highlight cinema from around the world and its cultural nuances.
  • Indie Films: Bring attention to awesome yet lesser-known independent movies.
  • Hollywood Blockbusters:  Analyze what makes big hits resonate with audiences.
  • Art of Movie Making: Dive into the behind-the-scenes craft of movie magic.

If you need help, check out our video guide on picking the perfect niche:

When picking a movie sub-niche, invest some time to understand the amount of interest and demand for content in that area. Focusing on a sub-niche with very little user interest will make it difficult to get traffic to your blog.

A simple test to see if there’s demand for a topic is by checking if there are other successful blogs in the niche as well.

Here’s a simple guide to seeking out successful blogs in your sub-niche:

List existing blogs in your selected movie sub-niche. To do this, brainstorm some topics you might write about, search them on Google, and list the blogs that show up. You can also use a tool like Ahrefs  and insert a blog you like into the “Organic Competitors” tool to get a list of similar blogs.

Ahrefs movie blog

Next, check their traffic level.  You can do this using a free trial for SE Ranking . Just go to the SEO Tools > Competitive Research, and enter the names of the different blogs in your list to check their traffic.

SE Ranking slashfilm

Use Google Trends to compare interest in the sub-niches.  You can enter a few sub-niches into Google Trends  to compare user interest among them over time.

Google Trends Movies

Don’t stress if you can’t figure out the perfect sub-niche right away. It’s normal to take a couple of days or even a week to do all this research. As long as your preferred sub-niche passes the viability test, you can feel secure your movie blog will generate traffic and earn money.

2 Choose a Blogging Platform

Once you select your niche, it’s time to choose a blogging platform.

A blogging platform is a service that lets you write, publish, manage, and share your content online.

👉 You can check out our list of the best blogging platforms  to take your pick.

Most beginners choose a free blogging platform like Medium or Blogger for publishing long-form content. However, these free platforms suffer from a few notable downsides.

  • The platform controls your content’s visibility, making you a slave to the algorithm .
  • It’s hard to monetize  content published on these free-to-use platforms.
  • A lack of customizability and design options  makes it difficult for you to stand out.

If you want to bypass all these cons, I recommend building your own website. Here’s a quick overview of the main benefits of having your own blog:

  • Show ads and integrate affiliate links  into your content to monetize your blog .
  • Change the color scheme or site layout to create an eye-catching design .
  • You have complete control over your blog.  No one can delete or remove your content.
  • You can insert relevant keywords in your blog posts and use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to drive free organic traffic  through search engines.
  • Your blog can help grow your social media  accounts and keep you in touch with fans via social platforms.
  • You can  build an email list , giving you direct access to your audience and protecting you from search engine algorithm changes.
  • Your blog is an asset , and you can sell it for big bucks. (We’ve sold multiple blogs for 6-figure exits .)

The only caveat is that it’ll take around an hour or so to set up and will cost you around $45 ($10 domain + $35 hosting) to get started. But, if you ask me, the potential return makes it well worth the investment.

To build your website, we recommend using WordPress.org  (not to be confused with WordPress.com).

WordPress homepage

It is free to use (domain and hosting extra) and gives you access to thousands of themes & plugins, so you have complete control over your site’s looks and functionalities. In fact, It’s what we use at AuthorityHacker, and it’s the platform of choice for 43% of the world wide web .

3 Choose Your Domain Name

With your niche and blogging platform ready, it’s time to pick a domain name.

Your domain name is your website’s address that includes the name of your website and a domain name extension like “.com.” For example, AuthorityHacker is the name of our website, and authorityhacker.com is our domain name.

domain name graphic

It’s super important that you pick a catchy domain name, as that’ll become your brand identity. A domain name that’s too generic or difficult to read can make it hard to remember. This can reduce direct traffic or word-of-mouth promotion.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you pick great domain names:

  • Use short and memorable names: Aim for 6-14 characters.
  • Make them easy to spell and read: Avoid using hyphens, numbers, and consecutive letters.
  • Use alliteration, rhymes, assonance, and consonance:  “Coca-Cola” uses alliteration, “StubHub” uses rhyme, “YouTube” uses assonance, and “Bitly” uses consonance.
  • Align it with your sub-niche: Pick a name that’s relevant to your sub-niche. E.g., A horror movie site can be called chillerthriller.com.
  • Avoid trademarked names: Use this trademark search tool  and avoid names registered under a trademark.
  • Prioritize  .com domains: These domain names carry a lot of trust, familiarity, and memorability.

Note:  If you have found an excellent domain name for your blog, but the .com extension is not available, you can use one of these popular .com alternatives .

Now, coming up with a domain name that meets all of these constraints can be difficult. This is where Brandsnap  – an AI domain name generator, can help you out.

After picking your domain name, you’ll need to buy it. A .com domain will cost you $10 per year on Namecheap .

4 Buy Web Hosting

After buying your new domain name, it’s time to pick a web hosting solution.

Web hosting is a service that provides the necessary tools and infrastructure to store and maintain websites (or web apps) on a server. Once a website is hosted on this server, it becomes accessible on the internet.

Now, there are tons of web hosting providers out there, with Bluehost  being particularly popular for its cheap pricing. However, Siteground  only costs around a dollar more, but the overall value is much greater, making it an easy recommendation for beginners.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to setting up web hosting using Siteground:

Step 1: Visit the Siteground WordPress hosting page .

Step 2: Pick the most affordable StartUp plan. It’s plenty powerful for launching a new WordPress blog.

Siteground pricing

Note: SiteGround, much like other hosting providers, offers a highly discounted price – around 80% – for new customers. Once your subscription term ends, you’ll be billed at the standard rate.

Step 3: Select “I already have a domain” and enter your domain name into the provided field. You can also buy (register) domains on Siteground, but it’s more expensive, so we recommend Namecheap.

Siteground domain selection

Step 4:  Enter your account information, location, and payment information into the provided fields.

Fill in siteground info

Step 5:  Pick a subscription period. (The 12-month usually offers the best deal.)

Siteground hosting services

Step 6:  Don’t get any of their promotional extra services. They are not necessary for a new blog.

Siteground extra services

Step 7:  Point your Namecheap domain name to your new Siteground server. You can follow this guide  or contact the Siteground support team, and they can help you out.

And voila! Your WordPress website is now addressed by your selected domain name and hosted on the Siteground server. In the following sections, I’ll show you how to design the website and add content to it.

5 Choose a Theme for Your Movie Blog

Once you’ve purchased web hosting, you’ll need a WordPress theme to help you customize the structure and layout of your website without coding.

For a movie blog, I suggest choosing a theme that evokes a cinematic vibe, boasting dark backgrounds, big, bold fonts for headings, etc.

Movie-blog-theme-examples

There are a few free themes that can give you this look, but you’ll find its basic feature set limiting your site’s growth.

This is why I recommend freemium themes – free versions of premium themes. Start with basic features for free and, as your blog grows, seamlessly transition to the premium version without overhauling your entire site.

If you’re looking for recommendations, here are my top 3 freemium WordPress themes — GeneratePress, Astra, and Kadence.

These themes are not only user-friendly, but have design elements that beautifully complement movie-related content.

For reference, here are our WordPress theme selection guidelines to guarantee a quality pick:

  • Does it load quickly?
  • Is it mobile-friendly (has a responsive design)?
  • Does it come from a reputable theme builder with positive reviews?
  • Can you customize it easily?
  • Does it provide quality after-sales support?

Once you’ve selected a theme for your movie blog, follow these steps to install it on your WordPress website:

1. Login to your WordPress dashboard

After installation, dive into the theme settings. Customize colors, fonts, and layouts to truly make it your own and align with your movie blog’s brand.

6 Decide on Design & Branding

With your theme set, it’s time to infuse your movie blog with distinct branding elements. This primarily involves selecting a color scheme and crafting a logo that embodies your blog’s essence.

Your branding choices, from colors to logo, play a pivotal role in setting your blog apart and ensuring it’s memorable.

For instance, a film reel logo immediately signifies a movie-centric theme, while a monochromatic gray palette with soft pastel accents might evoke modern indie cinema vibes.

To create a harmonious color scheme, aim for about 5 complementary colors. Avoid jarring combinations, like deep red backgrounds with blue text.

If you’re unsure, use Coolors  – a tool to help you visualize and choose appealing color combinations.

Next, design a logo that aligns with your blog’s theme and color scheme. Canva  offers a plethora of logo templates tailored for various niches, including movies.

Simply search for “movie logo” on Canva, pick a design that resonates, incorporate your blog’s name, adjust the colors to match your scheme, and voila – your logo is ready!

7 Create Essential Pages

With your blog’s design handled, it’s time to add some content, starting with 4 essential pages every blog must have.

This is the page where visitors land when they enter the blog’s domain name. It should highlight your key content to convey your blog’s theme and showcase top articles.

This is where you talk about why you decided to start this movie blog and where you want to take it. Include a few personal stories about how movies influenced your life to showcase your passion and build trust with readers.

Contact Page

At a minimum, this page should contain a form for readers, potential contributors, or advertisers to contact you. You can also add your social links here. Additional contact details like address and phone number can help boost SEO.

Privacy Policy + Terms & Conditions Pages

These pages are legally necessary to outline user data handling and site usage. You can use PrivacyPolicy.com  to generate these pages with a couple of clicks.

8 Start Creating Content

Now that you have laid down all the groundwork – it’s finally time to start writing and publishing articles on your movie blog.

That said, while you can write about any topic you like, focusing on keyword-driven content can bring organic traffic to your blog without active promotion. This is called a keyword-focused content strategy .

First, you need to find keywords or phrases that many people are searching for.

With your keywords in hand, craft articles that not only incorporate these terms but also provide genuine value to your readers.

When your content aligns with what users are searching for, search engines like Google take notice. They’ll rank your articles higher in search results, driving a steady stream of organic traffic to your blog.

However, a word of caution: the most popular keywords often come with fierce competition. Google prefers established movie review websites, making it challenging for a new movie blog to break through.

The solution? Focus on less competitive keywords that still attract a significant number of searches. Tools like Ahrefs  are very useful here.

For example, searching for “movie recommendations” in the Ahrefs Keyword Explorer tools, I get the following related keywords with search metrics:

Such insights can inspire a range of engaging blog topics like:

  • Top 25 Horror Movie Recommendations for Friday the 13th.
  • Top 5 Romance Movie Recommendations for New Couples.
  • 10 Best Family Movie Recommendations for Thanksgiving.

Repeat this process with different seed keywords and come up with 10 solid blog post ideas. Once you have your list, it’s time to delve into the art of SEO-optimized writing.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Understand the search intent. Think about why a user might search for a particular keyword. Your content should address that curiosity or need.
  • Write for the reader. Are your readers casual movie-goers or bonafide cinephiles? Tailor your tone and content depth accordingly.
  • Focus on the topic. If your article is about romantic movies, avoid veering into a tangent about action films. Stay relevant to your chosen keyword.
  • Internal linking. If you mention a topic covered in another article, link to it. This not only provides additional information to your readers but also boosts your SEO.
  • Format the content for readability. An article that’s easy on the eyes retains readers. Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and subheadings for clarity.
  • Share some personal anecdotes. Share anecdotes or personal opinions. It makes your content unique and fosters a connection with your readers.
  • Inject emotion. Your blog isn’t a sterile database. Let your passion for movies shine through your words.
  • Use multimedia content. Embed movie trailers, share behind-the-scenes footage, and use movie posters to enhance engagement.
  • Be careful about copyright laws.  Try to only use media files from press kits. Practice fair use  and don’t forget to link back to the official source.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, just remember one golden rule – aim to be more informative and engaging than other articles on the SERP . Consistency in delivering value will naturally boost your search rankings over time.

9 Promote Your Movie Blog

Your SEO-optimized articles will passively garner attention. But you can expedite this process by actively directing traffic to your site.

Here are some promotional strategies to help you reach a wider audience with your movie blog:

  • Engage in Movie Communities:  Share blog excerpts in movie forums and groups, inviting readers for more in-depth content on your site.
  • Leverage Movie Quizzes: Design and share movie-related quizzes on social media. It’s engaging, shareable, and a great way to build an email list.
  • Collaborate with Fellow Reviewers: Network with other movie bloggers and propose guest posting. They get free content, and you get exposure to a new audience group.
  • Host Virtual Movie Nights: Organize online movie sessions, fostering real-time discussions and directing attendees to related blog posts.
  • Launch a Podcast: Start a movie-themed podcast to reach a broader audience and guide listeners to your blog.

However you promote your blog, remember to be genuine and helpful! No one likes – or clicks on – spammy blog advertisements.

10 Monetize Your Movie Blog

Now that you have traffic coming to your blog, it’s finally time to start thinking about monetization.

Here are three strategies that work exceptionally well for making money with your movie blog:

You recommend readers movie streaming services or movie merchandise that you used or reviewed and loved. If they buy the service or product using your link, you earn a commission.

Affiliate marketing

Why It’s Great:  Readers discover valuable products, and you’re rewarded for your promotional efforts.

Get Started:  Check out our guide on how to start affiliate marketing  and view our list of the best movie affiliate programs .

Display Ads

Show ads on your blog and earn money when visitors view or click the ads.

Why It’s Great:  Your readers don’t have to spend any money, and you get to turn user engagement into cold hard cash.

Get Started:  The easiest way is to join an ad network. For new blogs, we recommend Ezoic  over the popular Google Adsense as it’s more beginner-friendly.

Alternatively, you can find direct sponsorships specific to the movie niche, where you get more control and more profits.

Sell Memberships

Create high-quality content only accessible to paying members. This can be detailed film analysis, exclusive interviews with actors or directors, etc.

Why It’s Great:  You can create more valuable content and get direct support from your fans.

Get Started:  WordPress plugins like MemberPress  or dedicated membership platforms like Patreon  can help you set up and manage memberships.

613 Movie Blog Name Ideas to Direct Your Success Story

Movie Blog Names

If you’ve ever thought of launching your very own movie blog, you might have gotten stuck on the most basic yet crucial step: naming it. 🎥✍️

Just like choosing the title of a blockbuster movie, your blog’s name can set the tone for your entire platform.

This article will guide you through the maze of choosing the perfect movie blog name.

Whether you’re looking to start a movie review blog, a movie news blog, or a film-based website, these movie blog name ideas are the perfect inspiration for your blog.

Just go through this list and pick the name you feel is suitable for your movie blog.

Catchy Movie Blog Names

Here’s the deal: Your blog name is like the headline of a magazine. It’s the first thing people see, and a catchy name can make them want to dive deeper.

Why Catchy Names Matter:

👉 Immediate Recognition: A catchy name sticks. People remember it, helping you build a brand.

👉 Engagement: If it piques interest, they’re more likely to click on your site from search results or social shares.

👉 Establishing Tone: A snazzy name gives off vibes of fun and entertainment, perfect for a movie blog.

Now, remember the magic formula for catchiness: simplicity + creativity = catchiness . Too complex, and you risk losing potential readers. Too bland, and well, it’s just another name in the crowd.

So, ready to roll the film on these catchy names?

Movie Blog Name Generator

Ah! If you’re someone who’s thinking, “I love movies, not the naming game!” then this section’s for you. A movie blog name generator can be a handy tool to churn out ideas when your creative well seems dry.

Why Use a Movie Blog Name Generator?

👉 Volume: Instantly receive a list of names, giving you plenty of choices.

👉 Inspiration: Even if you don’t choose one of the generated names, they might spark a unique idea.

👉 Time-Saving: Instead of spending hours brainstorming, get a list in seconds.

👉 Customization: Some generators allow you to tweak settings like name length, keywords, or themes.

But remember, while generators are great, they’re not foolproof. Some names may seem robotic or lack the personal touch. Our advice? Use them as a starting point or for inspiration, not the end-all solution.

Using a Name Generator:

👉 Specify Keywords: Most generators ask for a keyword. This could be “film”, “cinema”, or even your favorite movie.

👉 Tweak Settings: Some allow you to set the tone – playful, serious, quirky, etc.

👉 Generate & List: Hit the generate button and list down names that catch your eye.

👉 Personalize: Feel free to mix and match or add your personal touch.

Curious about what a blog name generator can dish out?

How To Name Your Movie Blog?

So, you’ve seen the names, but perhaps you’re thinking, “How can I craft one myself?”.

Let’s get into the director’s chair and understand the art of naming.

Steps to Name Your Movie Blog:

  • Define Your Niche: Are you reviewing indie films, blockbusters, or diving deep into film theories?
  • Know Your Audience: A quirky, young audience? Or a mature group looking for in-depth analysis?
  • Make it Memorable: Alliteration, rhymes, or puns can be your best friend here.
  • Check Domain Availability: Before getting too attached, ensure the domain name is available!
  • Seek Feedback: Share the name with friends, family, or even your social media followers. Their feedback is invaluable.

Just remember, naming is a combination of art and science. It’s about resonance. When it feels right, you’ll know.

Roll credits! 🎥🍿

Conclusion: Movie Blog Names

Choosing the perfect name for your movie blog isn’t just about finding a cool title. It’s about encapsulating your passion for cinema, your blog’s unique perspective, and connecting with your intended audience. Think of it as choosing the perfect title for your own movie. 🍿

A piece of advice? Don’t fret over it too much. Just like in filmmaking, sometimes the first take might be the magic one. But even if it’s not, revisions lead to perfection.

So, next time you watch a movie, and the title captures your heart, let it inspire you. Because if it can leave a lasting impression on you, imagine what the perfect blog name can do for your readers.
