Say it right with DeepL Write: Introducing our new AI writing companion

The beta version of DeepL Write , our newly minted AI writing companion, is free and available for anyone to use! What is DeepL Write? DeepL Write is an AI writing tool that improves written communication in both English and German. Write tackles more than just grammar—it puts you in control of your writing by offering suggestions on phrasing, tone, style, and word choice. With so many options, you’ll never compromise your authentic voice.

Who can use DeepL Write?

DeepL Write offers something for everyone, regardless of language proficiency. Whether you need to fine-tune some phrasing in your native language or double-check accuracy in your second (or third!) language, you can use the tool to feel more confident in your writing.  Write is especially useful for professionals such as journalists, writers, or academics looking to boost their creativity through sentence, word, and rephrase suggestions. Multilingual teams in global companies can also use Write to draft clear and concise emails, campaign proposals, reports, and presentations for international clients. Why are we launching DeepL Write? Through conversations with loyal users of our translator , we found they often improve their writing by switching between source and target language—this gave us the idea to create a new tool exclusively to fine-tune written communication.  Similar to the translator, Write utilizes sophisticated neural network technology that captures the context and nuances of the original text to provide rephrasing suggestions and alternative word choices. Where can I use DeepL Write? DeepL Write is available on your desktop browser at DeepL.com/write and via the mobile website on your personal device. As DeepL Write is in the beta phase, we are constantly improving the tool to ensure accuracy in its suggestions.  DeepL Translator is already used by millions of people every single day. The addition of Write furthers our mission to build tools that help overcome communication barriers worldwide. 🌐

What makes a good writing app?

Put simply, what makes a writing app good for you will depend on the kind of writer that you are.

  • If you’re an author , you might be interested in a writing app with outlining, planning, and formatting functionalities.
  • If you’re a student , you’re probably in the market for a writing app that blocks out distractions while you’re writing.
  • If you’re a screenwriter , you’ll want a writing app that’s specifically dedicated to writing screenplays.

Or, if you’re none of the above, worry not: that’s why we built this directory of writing apps. Whatever you need, we’ve gathered the outstanding writing apps of 2024 across multiple categories (drafting, editing, note-taking, etc) and platforms (Android, iOS, online browsers, etc) in one place. Feel free to use the filters to make your quest for the perfect writing app even easier!

So what are the best writing apps of 2024?

We can now put an end to the age-old debate of which writing app is best: Microsoft Word vs. Google Docs ?

The answer, of course, is neither! Hopefully, this directory will point you towards a much better match that actually fulfills your writing needs. We objectively evaluated each writing app based on four metrics.

  • Performance: How seamlessly does the writing app do what it’s purported to do? How good is the user experience, from top to bottom?
  • Features: How many bells and whistles are built into the app to augment its use?
  • Accessibility: Is it widely available on many different operating platforms (e.g. iOS, Windows, mobile, desktop, etc)?
  • Value: Is it worth the cost that it would take to download it?

Here are some general recommendations to give you a headstart.

Troubleshooting, how to downgrade ios 18 beta to ios 17.

How to downgrade iOS 18 beta to iOS 17

Many curious users have installed iOS 18 beta onto iPhone or iPadOS 18 beta onto iPad , but since beta system software is not always the smoothest ride, some of these people might be interested in removing the beta from their device and downgrade iOS 18 beta back to the iOS 17 stable releases.

Whether you’re experiencing specific issues with the iOS 18 beta, battery drain, hot iPhone, app incompatibility, bugs, performance degradation, or any other reason, you can downgrade and get back to iOS 17 stable releases with a little effort.

Let’s walk through the steps of downgrading iOS 18 beta and returning to iOS 17 on an iPhone. This guide also applies to downgrading iPadOS 18 beta to iPadOS 17 on iPad, too.

Important: iOS 18 Backups Are Not Compatible with iOS 17

The iOS 18 beta downgrade method we’re going to cover here, which includes all of your personal data, relies on having an iOS 17 backup that was made to a computer – Finder or iTunes – before installing the iOS 18 beta.

If you did not backup your device to a computer before installing the beta, your downgrade option will necessitate setting up your device as new. This is because iOS backups are not backwards compatible. Basically this means if you do not have a backup made from iOS 17 prior to installing the iOS 18 beta, then you can not restore your stuff back to iOS 17.

You can still downgrade your device from iOS 18 beta without an iOS 17 backup, but it will be setup as new with none of your data.

This is one of the reasons it is critical to backup your iPhone or iPad before installing any beta system software.

How to Downgrade iOS 18 Beta Back to iOS 17

The simplest way to downgrade from iOS 18 beta back to iOS 17 is to put the iPhone (or iPad) into Recovery Mode, and then initiate a device restore. After the iPhone or iPad is restored, you can then restore your backup and get all your stuff back. If you do not have an iOS 17 compatible backup, the device will have to be setup as new. If you do not want to erase your device, do not proceed.

  • Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac or PC by using a USB cable
  • Open Finder on Mac, or Apple Devices / iTunes on a Windows PC
  • Now that the iPhone or iPad is connected to the computer, put it into Recovery Mode with the following button pressing sequence: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, press and hold the Power/Lock button, until you enter Recovery Mode (a pop-up Restore dialog will appear on the computer)
  • Now choose “Restore” to restore the iPhone or iPad back to the latest stable iOS 17 release
  • Allow the restore process to complete on iPhone or iPad
  • The iPhone or iPad will eventually boot back into a fresh installation of iOS 17 (or iPadOS 17) where you can go through the typical setup process, where you’ll have the option to restore your backup from the computer to get all your data back, or setup the device as new

If you restore your iPhone or iPad from a backup made from iOS 17, you’ll soon be using your device with all of your stuff again in iOS 17, downgraded successfully from iOS 18 beta.

If you did not restore your iPhone or iPad from a backup, you’ll be running a fresh installation of iOS 17 with none of your data on it.

I only have an iCloud backup from iOS 18 beta, can I still downgrade to iOS 17?

Not without losing your data, because iCloud backups from iOS 18 beta are not compatible with iOS 17.

Your best course of action is to simply stay on the iOS 18 beta, and continue to install the iOS 18 beta updates as they arrive on the device.

The final version of iOS 18 will be much more stable and reliable when it is released in the fall, and later beta versions typically are much more reliable as well.

Did you downgrade from iOS 18 beta to iOS 17 again? Why did you downgrade? How did the downgrade process go for you? Let us know your experiences and thoughts in the comments.

I have always been skeptical of early releases of public beta’s. Because average users tend to install the beta for all the wrong reasons. The expectation from many is a jump on the next release over the general public. But early beta’s tend to be full of bugs even up to the last weeks of testing. Installing a beta especially a early release is asking for trouble. You should expect issues and work to exchange information to Apple so they can resolve those issues. If your not willing to endure the pitfalls of beta’s then do not install one on a primary device you depend on. Going back to a stable release is not always a simple task.

Humm actually there’s a way ro restore an ios 18 backup on an ios 17 device and i’d say that it works pretty well (yes i had to downgrade my own iphonee because of this beta taking more than 50Gb of system data) you just need to change the ios version in the info.plist of your backup and restore your backup after you reinstalled thge software on your iphone.

Is there a way to disable it?

sw1tcher Avatar

Disable what? Alternative app stores work only if you actively seek out and download/install an alternative marketplace app from Apple's App Store or directly from the website of the alternative app marketplace developer. https://support.apple.com/en-us/118110 Alternative app marketplaces are unique kinds of iOS apps that you can use to install other apps on your iPhone. Users in the European Union can install an alternative app marketplace on iPhone by downloading it directly from the website of the alternative app marketplace developer. By not installing an app for an alternative marketplace, you will not enable the feature. In other words, the feature is by default disabled unless you enable it by installing an app for an alternative marketplace.

Surprised they did this considering they weren’t required by DMA at this time to enable it on the iPads.

How not to write your college essay.

If you are looking for the “secret formula” for writing a “winning” college essay, you have come to the wrong place. The reality is there is no silver bullet or strategy to write your way to an acceptance. There is not one topic or approach that will guarantee a favorable outcome.

At the end of the day, every admission office just wants to know more about you, what you value, and what excites you. They want to hear about your experiences through your own words and in your own voice. As you set out to write your essay, you will no doubt get input (both sought-after and unsolicited) on what to write. But how about what NOT to write? There are avoidable blunders that applicants frequently make in drafting their essays. I asked college admission leaders, who have read thousands of submissions, to share their thoughts.

Don’t Go In There

There is wide consensus on this first one, so before you call on your Jedi mind tricks or predictive analytics, listen to the voices of a diverse range of admission deans. Peter Hagan, executive director of admissions at Syracuse University, sums it up best, saying, “I would recommend that students try not to get inside of our heads. He adds, “Too often the focus is on what they think we want.”

Andy Strickler, dean of admission and financial aid at Connecticut College agrees, warning, “Do NOT get caught in the trap of trying to figure out what is going to impress the admission committee. You have NO idea who is going to read your essay and what is going to connect with them. So, don't try to guess that.” Victoria Romero, vice president for enrollment, at Scripps College adds, “Do not write about something you don’t care about.” She says, “I think students try to figure out what an admission officer wants to read, and the reality is the reader begins every next essay with no expectations about the content THEY want to read.” Chrystal Russell, dean of admission at Hampden-Sydney College, agrees, saying, “If you're not interested in writing it, we will not be interested when reading it.” Jay Jacobs, vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Vermont elaborates, advising. “Don’t try to make yourself sound any different than you are.” He says, “The number one goal for admission officers is to better understand the applicant, what they like to do, what they want to do, where they spend the majority of their time, and what makes them tick. If a student stays genuine to that, it will shine through and make an engaging and successful essay.”

Don’t Be Artificial

The headlines about college admission are dominated by stories about artificial intelligence and the college essay. Let’s set some ground rules–to allow ChatGPT or some other tool to do your work is not only unethical, it is also unintelligent. The only worse mistake you could make is to let another human write your essay for you. Instead of preoccupying yourself with whether or not colleges are using AI detection software (most are not), spend your time focused on how best to express yourself authentically. Rick Clark is the executive director of strategic student success at Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the first institutions to clearly outline their AI policy for applicants. He says, “Much of a college application is devoted to lines, boxes, and numbers. Essays and supplements are the one place to establish connection, personality, and distinction. AI, in its current state, is terrible at all three.” He adds, “My hope is that students will use ChatGPT or other tools for brainstorming and to get started, but then move quickly into crafting an essay that will provide insight and value.”

Don’t Overdo It

Michael Stefanowicz, vice president for enrollment management at Landmark College says, “You can only cover so much detail about yourself in an admission essay, and a lot of students feel pressure to tell their life story or choose their most defining experience to date as an essay topic. Admission professionals know that you’re sharing just one part of your lived experience in the essay.” He adds, “Some of the favorite essays I’ve read have been episodic, reflecting on the way you’ve found meaning in a seemingly ordinary experience, advice you’ve lived out, a mistake you’ve learned from, or a special tradition in your life.” Gary Ross, vice president for admission and financial aid at Colgate University adds, “More than a few applicants each year craft essays that talk about the frustration and struggles they have experienced in identifying a topic for their college application essay. Presenting your college application essay as a smorgasbord of topics that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor does not give us much insight into an applicant.”

Don’t Believe In Magic

Jason Nevinger, senior director of admission at the University of Rochester warns, “Be skeptical of anyone or any company telling you, ‘This is the essay that got me into _____.’ There is no magic topic, approach, sentence structure, or prose that got any student into any institution ever.” Social media is littered with advertisements promising strategic essay help. Don’t waste your time, energy, or money trying to emulate a certain style, topic, or tone. Liz Cheron is chief executive officer for the Coalition for College and former assistant vice president of enrollment & dean of admissions at Northeastern University. She agrees with Nevinger, saying “Don't put pressure on yourself to find the perfect, slam dunk topic. The vast majority of college essays do exactly what they're supposed to do–they are well-written and tell the admission officer more about the student in that student's voice–and that can take many different forms.”

Don’t Over Recycle

Beatrice Atkinson-Myers, associate director of global recruitment at the University of California at Santa Cruz tells students, “Do not use the same response for each university; research and craft your essay to match the program at the university you are interested in studying. Don't waste time telling me things I can read elsewhere in your application. Use your essay to give the admissions officer insights into your motivations, interests, and thinking. Don't make your essay the kitchen sink, focus on one or two examples which demonstrate your depth and creativity.” Her UC colleague, Jim Rawlins, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of California at San Diego agrees, saying “Answer the question. Not doing so is the surest way we can tell you are simply giving us a snippet of something you actually wrote for a different purpose.”

Don’t Overedit

Emily Roper-Doten, vice president for undergraduate admissions and financial assistance at Clark University warns against “Too many editors!” She says, “Pick a couple of trusted folks to be your sounding board when considering topics and as readers once you have drafts. You don’t want too many voices in your essay to drown you out!” Scripps’ Romero agrees, suggesting, “Ask a good friend, someone you trust and knows you well, to read your essays.” She adds, “The goal is for the admission committee to get to know a little about you and who better to help you create that framework, than a good friend. This may not work for all students because of content but helps them understand it’s important to be themselves.” Whitney Soule, vice provost and dean of admissions at The University of Pennsylvania adds, “Avoid well-meaning editorial interference that might seem to polish your writing but actually takes your own personal ‘shine’ right out of the message.” She says, “As readers, we connect to applicants through their genuine tone and style. Considering editorial advice for flow and message is OK but hold on to the 'you' for what you want to say and how you want to say it.”

Don’t Get Showy

Palmer Muntz, senior regional admissions counselor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks cautions applicants, “Don’t be fancier than you are. You don’t need to put on airs.” He adds, “Yes, proofread your work for grammar and spelling, but be natural. Craft something you’d want to read yourself, which probably means keeping your paragraphs short, using familiar words, and writing in an active voice.” Connecticut College’s Strickler agrees, warning, “Don't try to be someone you are not. If you are not funny, don't try to write a funny essay. If you are not an intellectual, trying to write an intellectual essay is a bad idea.”

Anthony Jones, the vice president of enrollment management at Loyola University New Orleans offers a unique metaphor for thinking about the essay. He says, “In the new world of the hyper-fast college admission process, it's become easy to overlook the essential meaning of the college application. It's meant to reveal Y...O...U, the real you, not some phony digital avatar. Think of the essay as the essence of that voice but in analog. Like the completeness and authenticity captured in a vinyl record, the few lines you're given to explain your view should be a slow walk through unrestrained expression chock full of unapologetic nuances, crevices of emotion, and exactness about how you feel in the moment. Then, and only then, can you give the admissions officer an experience that makes them want to tune in and listen for more.”

Don’t Be A Downer

James Nondorf, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at The University of Chicago says, “Don’t be negative about other people, be appreciative of those who have supported you, and be excited about who you are and what you will bring to our campus!” He adds, “While admissions offices want smart students for our classrooms, we also want kind-hearted, caring, and joyous students who will add to our campus communities too.”

Don’t Pattern Match

Alan Ramirez is the dean of admission and financial aid at Sewanee, The University of the South. He explains, “A big concern I have is when students find themselves comparing their writing to other students or past applicants and transform their writing to be more like those individuals as a way to better their chances of offering a more-compelling essay.” He emphasizes that the result is that the “essay is no longer authentic nor the best representation of themselves and the whole point of the essay is lost. Their distinctive voice and viewpoint contribute to the range of voices in the incoming class, enhancing the diversity of perspectives we aim to achieve.” Ramirez simple tells students, “Be yourself, that’s what we want to see, plus there's no one else who can do it better than you!”

Don’t Feel Tied To A Topic

Jessica Ricker is the vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid at Skidmore College. She says, “Sometimes students feel they must tell a story of grief or hardship, and then end up reliving that during the essay-writing process in ways that are emotionally detrimental. I encourage students to choose a topic they can reflect upon positively but recommend that if they choose a more challenging experience to write about, they avoid belaboring the details and instead focus on the outcome of that journey.” She adds, "They simply need to name it, frame its impact, and then help us as the reader understand how it has shaped their lens on life and their approach moving forward.”

Landmark College’s Stefanowicz adds, “A lot of students worry about how personal to get in sharing a part of their identity like your race or heritage (recalling last year’s Supreme Court case about race-conscious admissions), a learning difference or other disability, your religious values, LGBTQ identity…the list goes on.” He emphasizes, “This is always your choice, and your essay doesn’t have to be about a defining identity. But I encourage you to be fully yourself as you present yourself to colleges—because the college admission process is about finding a school where your whole self is welcome and you find a setting to flourish!”

Don’t Be Redundant

Hillen Grason Jr., dean of admission at Franklin & Marshall College, advises, “Don't repeat academic or co-curricular information that is easily identifiable within other parts of your application unless the topic is a core tenant of you as an individual.” He adds, “Use your essay, and other parts of your application, wisely. Your essay is the best way to convey who your authentic self is to the schools you apply. If you navigated a situation that led to a dip in your grades or co-curricular involvement, leverage the ‘additional information’ section of the application.

Thomas Marr is a regional manager of admissions for the Americas at The University of St Andrews in Scotland and points out that “Not all international schools use the main college essay as part of their assessment when reviewing student applications.” He says, “At the University of St Andrews, we focus on the supplemental essay and students should avoid the mistake of making the supplemental a repeat of their other essay. The supplemental (called the Personal Statement if using the UCAS application process) is to show the extent of their passion and enthusiasm for the subject/s to which they are applying and we expect about 75% of the content to cover this. They can use the remaining space to mention their interests outside of the classroom. Some students confuse passion for the school with passion for their subject; do not fall into that trap.”

A Few Final Don’ts

Don’t delay. Every college applicant I have ever worked with has wished they had started earlier. You can best avoid the pitfalls above if you give yourself the time and space to write a thoughtful essay and welcome feedback openly but cautiously. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect . Do your best, share your voice, and stay true to who you are.

The Third Beta of Android 15

essay app beta

Today's Android 15 Beta 3 release takes Android 15 to Platform Stability , which means that the developer APIs and all app-facing behaviors are now final for you to review and integrate into your apps, and apps targeting Android 15 can be made available in Google Play. Thank you for all of your continued feedback in getting us to this milestone.

Android 15 continues our work to build a platform that helps improve your productivity while giving you new capabilities to produce superior media and AI experiences , take advantage of device form factors, minimize battery impact , maximize smooth app performance , and protect user privacy and security , all on the most diverse lineup of devices.

Android delivers enhancements and new features year-round, and your feedback on the Android beta program plays a key role in helping Android continuously improve. The Android 15 developer site has lots more information about the beta, including how to get it on devices and the release timeline . We’re looking forward to hearing what you think , and thank you in advance for your continued help in making Android a platform that works for everyone.

New in Android 15 Beta 3

Android 15 Production Timeline

Given where we are in the release cycle, there are just a few new things in the Android 15 Beta 3 release for you to consider when developing your apps.

Improved user experience for passkeys and Credential Manager

Users will be able to sign-into apps that target Android 15 using passkeys in a single step with facial recognition, fingerprint, or screen lock. If they accidentally dismiss the prompt to use a passkey to sign-in, they will be able to see the passkey or other Credential Manager suggestions in autofill conditional user interfaces, such as keyboard suggestions or dropdowns.

Single-step UI experience

Single step UI experience demonstrating before on the left which required two taps and after on the right which only requires one

Fallback UI experience

Fallback UI experience showing password, passkey, and sign in with Google options across Keyboard chips and on screen dropdown options

Credential Provider integration for the single-step UI

Registered credential providers will be able to use upcoming APIs in the Jetpack androidx.credentials library to hand off the user authentication mechanism to the system UI , enabling the single-step authentication experience on devices running Android 15.

App integration for autofill fallback UI

When you present the user with a selector at sign-in using Credential Manager APIs, you can associate a Credential Manager request with a given view , such as a username or a password field. When the user focuses on one of these views, Credential Manager gets an associated request, and provider-aggregated resulting credentials are displayed in autofill fallback UIs, such as inline or dropdown suggestions.

WebSQL deprecated in Android WebView

The setDatabaseEnabled and getDatabaseEnabled WebSettings are now deprecated. These settings are used for WebSQL support inside Webview. WebSQL is removed in Chrome and is now deprecated on Android Webview. These methods will become a no-op on all Android versions in the next 12 months.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) encourages apps needing web databases to adopt Web Storage API technologies like IndexedDB .

Get your apps, libraries, tools, and game engines ready!

If you develop an SDK, library, tool, or game engine, it's even more important to prepare any necessary updates now to prevent your downstream app and game developers from being blocked by compatibility issues and allow them to target the latest SDK features. Please let your developers know if updates are needed to fully support Android 15.

Testing your app involves installing your production app using Google Play or other means onto a device or emulator running Android 15 Beta 3. Work through all your app's flows and look for functional or UI issues. Review the behavior changes to focus your testing. Each release of Android contains platform changes that improve privacy, security, and overall user experience, and these changes can affect your apps. Here are several changes to focus on that apply even if you don't yet target Android 15:

  • Package stopped state changes - Android 15 updates the behavior of the package FLAG_STOPPED state to keep apps stopped until the user launches or indirectly interacts with the app.
  • Support for 16KB page sizes - Beginning with Android 15, Android supports devices that are configured to use a page size of 16 KB. If your app or library uses the NDK, either directly or indirectly through an SDK, then you will likely need to rebuild your app for it to work on these devices.
  • Private space support - Private space is a new feature in Android 15 that lets users create a separate space on their device where they can keep sensitive apps away from prying eyes, under an additional layer of authentication.
  • Predictive back animations enabled - Beginning in Android 15, system animations such as back-to-home, cross-task, and cross-activity will now appear for apps that have opted in to the predictive back gesture either entirely or at an activity level.

Remember to thoroughly exercise libraries and SDKs that your app is using during your compatibility testing. You may need to update to current SDK versions or reach out to the developer for help if you encounter any issues.

Once you’ve published the Android 15-compatible version of your app, you can start the process to update your app's targetSdkVersion . Review the behavior changes that apply when your app targets Android 15 and use the compatibility framework to help quickly detect issues.

Get started with Android 15

Passports can now be renewed online. Here's how to apply.

By Khristopher J. Brooks

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

June 13, 2024 / 11:24 AM EDT / CBS News

U.S. travelers can now renew their passport online under a pilot program the U.S. Department of State launched on Thursday.

The State Department's new online system will allow U.S. passport holders to start a renewal application for a short window of time every day, closing once the system has reached a designated number of new applications, officials said in a statement . The agency is preparing a full launch of the renewal system at some point after testing, but didn't provide an exact date.

If successful, an online renewal system could shorten the sometimes monthslong process travelers experience when trying to update their passport.

"During the next several months, we plan to continue to limit the number of applications accepted each day so we can monitor the system's performance in real time," the department said. "If you are unable to start your application, try again on another day."

Processing passports has become a growing problem for the State Department ever since COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted, with the agency bombarded with an overwhelming number of applications  each week. The passport application backlog grew so heavy last year that federal lawmakers from California, Colorado and Oklahoma introduced separate proposals to the Senate to speed up the application process.

Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma  proposed legislation  that would improve the online tracking of passport applications and allow the State Department to hire more staff. Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Ted Lieu of California introduced the  PASSPORT Act  to streamline the passport application and renewal process.

The number of Americans holding valid U.S. passports has grown at roughly 10% faster than the population over the past three decades, said Jay Zagorsky, an economist at Boston University. Just 5% of Americans had a passport in 1990, according to the State Department. That number grew to 48% in December.

The State Department issued a record setting 24 million passports in 2023. Wait times for passport applications and renewals  returned to their normal 6-8 week time frame in December , the State Department  said .

Renewing your passport online involves a six-step process:

  • Create a free MyTravelGov online account.
  • After the account is created, log in and start a renewal application by clicking on the "Renew Your Passport" button.
  • On the form that appears, fill in all the boxes with the information currently printed on your passport.
  • Enter your plans to travel internationally if your departure is within the next eight weeks.
  • Upload a jpeg photo of yourself. No selfies.
  • Pay the passport renewal fee and digitally sign the application.

Visit the State Department's online renewal website for more details.

European Union

Eu app store changes for ipad now available to test with second ipados 18 beta.

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Back in April, we learned that the EU would force Apple to bring the same App Store changes to iPad that previously arrived for iPhone . Those include app sideloading, alternative app payment, alternative browser engine support, and more. Now the second iPadOS 18 beta brings the ability to test those EU changes on iPad for the first time.

Apple shared the news on its Developer website today alongside launching the second round of betas :

The  changes for apps in the European Union (EU) , currently available to iOS users in the 27 EU member countries, can now be tested in iPadOS 18 beta 2 with Xcode 16 beta 2.

The company also noted details about the Web Browser Engine Entitlement Addendum for Apps and the Embedded Browser Engine Entitlement for Apps in the EU:

Also, the Web Browser Engine Entitlement Addendum for Apps in the EU and Embedded Browser Engine Entitlement Addendum for Apps in the EU now include iPadOS. If you’ve already entered into either of these addendums, be sure to sign the updated terms.

If you need a refresher, Apple has a Developer support page dedicated to the EU App Store changes that already apply to iOS and will officially apply to iPadOS this fall.

Apple has made a number of major changes to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act. However, the EU may rule Apple’s approach as non-compliant:

  • EU says Apple has ‘very serious’ issues for not complying with DMA

Meanwhile, Apple is facing a similar antitrust pressure in Japan and India:

  • Japan passes law forcing Apple to allow iOS App Marketplaces in the country
  • Next Apple antitrust battle set to be in India; Apple lobbying against it

Harvard Business School Will Now Update Its MBA Essay

essay app beta

A full month later than its normal release of application deadlines, Harvard Business School today (June 5) posted its cutoff dates for MBA applicants to the Class of 2027 . The application opens Tuesday, June 25.

Though a change in essays had been expected and sources confirmed that a proposed change went before the dean, Harvard initially stuck with the essay prompt it has used for more than a decade. The prompt with a limit of 900 words: “As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?” (See MBA Essays That Worked At Harvard & Stanford ).

Two days after posting the new deadlines, however, Harvard said in a blog post that it would, in fact, reveal a new essay prompt on June 25th when the application goes live on the school’s website. “As part of this year’s application, you can expect some updates including changes to the essay prompt, which will be an opportunity for you to bring to life your journey and future aspirations,” according to the blog post .

For applicants who are invited to interview with admissions, the school also maintained its post-interview reflection requirement (see  Samples Of Harvard Business School Post-Interview Reflections ).

Speculation that the new managing director of admissions and financial aid, Rupal Gadhia , who arrived at Harvard last October, would change the application was rife. Some MBA admission consultants even posted videos suggesting a change was imminent. It now seems that will be true in another two weeks.

HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPT 4 FOR ROUND ONE, JAN. 6 FOR ROUND TWO

For round one MBA applicants, Harvard set a September 4 deadline with final decisions out on December 10. Though the school did not post a date when R1 candidates would either be invited to interview or rejected outright, HBS typically notifies applicants in early October. Last year, the date was October 4.

For round two candidates, Harvard set a January 6 deadline, with final decisions out on March 26th. Last year, interview invites and rejections for this round came out on January 31.

Harvard posted the new deadlines without a blog post from Gadhia. (Update on June 7: Gadhia posted this update .)

The school said it would update the application dates for the 2025 2+2 deferred admission process in late summer of 2024.

Harvard Business School MBA application deadlines

Harvard Business School MBA application deadlines for 2024-2025

Harvard, of course, has one of the world’s most selective MBA programs. Last year, just 13.2% of the 8,149 people who applied were admitted. Application volume at HBS was down for the second straight year in 2023. Over the past three years, in fact, HBS app volume is down by 1,624 candidates. Only MIT Sloan has lost more applicants during that same time frame: 1,795 (see Acceptance Rates & Yield At The Top 100 U.S. MBA Programs ).

  • The exponential growth of solar power will change the world

An energy-rich future is within reach

The sun at dawn rising over a solar panel

Your browser does not support the <audio> element.

I t is 70 years since AT&T ’s Bell Labs unveiled a new technology for turning sunlight into power. The phone company hoped it could replace the batteries that run equipment in out-of-the-way places. It also realised that powering devices with light alone showed how science could make the future seem wonderful; hence a press event at which sunshine kept a toy Ferris wheel spinning round and round.

Today solar power is long past the toy phase. Panels now occupy an area around half that of Wales, and this year they will provide the world with about 6% of its electricity—which is almost three times as much electrical energy as America consumed back in 1954. Yet this historic growth is only the second-most-remarkable thing about the rise of solar power. The most remarkable is that it is nowhere near over.

To call solar power’s rise exponential is not hyperbole, but a statement of fact. Installed solar capacity doubles roughly every three years, and so grows ten-fold each decade. Such sustained growth is seldom seen in anything that matters. That makes it hard for people to get their heads round what is going on. When it was a tenth of its current size ten years ago, solar power was still seen as marginal even by experts who knew how fast it had grown. The next ten-fold increase will be equivalent to multiplying the world’s entire fleet of nuclear reactors by eight in less than the time it typically takes to build just a single one of them.

Solar cells will in all likelihood be the single biggest source of electrical power on the planet by the mid 2030s. By the 2040s they may be the largest source not just of electricity but of all energy. On current trends, the all-in cost of the electricity they produce promises to be less than half as expensive as the cheapest available today. This will not stop climate change, but could slow it a lot faster. Much of the world—including Africa , where 600m people still cannot light their homes—will begin to feel energy-rich. That feeling will be a new and transformational one for humankind.

To grasp that this is not some environmentalist fever dream, consider solar economics. As the cumulative production of a manufactured good increases, costs go down. As costs go down, demand goes up. As demand goes up, production increases—and costs go down further. This cannot go on for ever; production, demand or both always become constrained. In earlier energy transitions—from wood to coal, coal to oil or oil to gas—the efficiency of extraction grew, but it was eventually offset by the cost of finding ever more fuel.

As our essay this week explains, solar power faces no such constraint. The resources needed to produce solar cells and plant them on solar farms are silicon-rich sand, sunny places and human ingenuity, all three of which are abundant. Making cells also takes energy, but solar power is fast making that abundant, too. As for demand, it is both huge and elastic—if you make electricity cheaper, people will find uses for it. The result is that, in contrast to earlier energy sources, solar power has routinely become cheaper and will continue to do so.

Other constraints do exist. Given people’s proclivity for living outside daylight hours, solar power needs to be complemented with storage and supplemented by other technologies. Heavy industry and aviation and freight have been hard to electrify. Fortunately, these problems may be solved as batteries and fuels created by electrolysis gradually become cheaper.

Another worry is that the vast majority of the world’s solar panels, and almost all the purified silicon from which they are made, come from China. Its solar industry is highly competitive, heavily subsidised and is outstripping current demand—quite an achievement given all the solar capacity China is installing within its own borders. This means that Chinese capacity is big enough to keep the expansion going for years to come, even if some of the companies involved go to the wall and some investment dries up.

In the long run, a world in which more energy is generated without the oil and gas that come from unstable or unfriendly parts of the world will be more dependable. Still, although the Chinese Communist Party cannot rig the price of sunlight as OPEC tries to rig that of oil, the fact that a vital industry resides in a single hostile country is worrying.

It is a concern that America feels keenly, which is why it has put tariffs on Chinese solar equipment. However, because almost all the demand for solar panels still lies in the future, the rest of the world will have plenty of scope to get into the market. America’s adoption of solar energy could be frustrated by a pro-fossil-fuel Trump presidency, but only temporarily and painfully. It could equally be enhanced if America released pent up demand, by making it easier to install panels on homes and to join the grid—the country has a terawatt of new solar capacity waiting to be connected. Carbon prices would help, just as they did in the switch from coal to gas in the European Union.

The aim should be for the virtuous circle of solar-power production to turn as fast as possible. That is because it offers the prize of cheaper energy. The benefits start with a boost to productivity. Anything that people use energy for today will cost less—and that includes pretty much everything. Then come the things cheap energy will make possible. People who could never afford to will start lighting their houses or driving a car. Cheap energy can purify water, and even desalinate it. It can drive the hungry machinery of artificial intelligence. It can make billions of homes and offices more bearable in summers that will, for decades to come, be getting hotter.

But it is the things that nobody has yet thought of that will be most consequential. In its radical abundance, cheaper energy will free the imagination, setting tiny Ferris wheels of the mind spinning with excitement and new possibilities.

This week marks the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. The Sun rising to its highest point in the sky will in decades to come shine down on a world where nobody need go without the blessings of electricity and where the access to energy invigorates all those it touches. ■
