Dasara Movie Review: Fiery Nani is brilliant in this predictable revenge drama
Director srikanth odela's dasara, starring nani, keerthy suresh and deekshit shetty, is a visually stunning revenge drama. with some clichés, dasara has its heart in the right place, says our review..
Listen to Story
- Nani's Dasara graced the screens on March 30.
- The film is directed by Sirkanth Odela.
- Keerthy Suresh, Deekshit Shetty, Shine Tom Chacko and Samuthirakani play pivotal roles.
Release Date: 30 Mar, 2023
Nani has been everywhere for the past few weeks. Be it promotional events or social media, he went all out in promoting Dasara as a pan-Indian venture. When the trailer of Dasara dropped, many felt that it reminded them of Pushpa and KGF. However, Dasara was neither Pushpa nor it was KGF. It had Srikanth Odela’s stamp despite the predictable storyline.
Dharani (Nani), Suri (Deekshit Shetty) and Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) are childhood friends. They hail from a village called Veerapally, where men take the bottle. Their alcoholism affects the women in their lives. Dharani and Suri are best friends. So much so that Dharani will give up his love for Vennela, who is in love with Suri. As Suri and Vennela take their relationship to the next level, it does not go down well with Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko). The village, where coal mining is a way of life, is divided because of Rajanna (Sai Kumar) and Shivanna (Samuthirakani).
Srikanth Odela is a debutant filmmaker, but he is a promising talent. With Dasara, he has built a semi-fictional world and has successfully transported us to the village of Veerapally. He shows Dharani as a vulnerable underdog. For a hero, he cries on screen, has no bladder control and shakes up in fear when trouble knocks on the door. In contrast, Suri, his friend, is his strength. While Dharani is naïve, Suri is practical. Meanwhile, there’s a feisty Vennela, who is a breath of fresh air.
Dasara is a film that relies on its drama. Srikanth Odela is in no hurry to dive into the story the right way. In fact, it looks like he knew he had a predictable storyline in hand and decided to build a world around it so he could create an immersive experience for everyone. Dasara has so many layers. The film talks about women and how they are exploited, rampant caste politics and superstition.
While the world-building, and characterisations of the lead roles and music make Dasara enjoyable, certain tropes hold the viewers back from completely enjoying this brilliantly shot revenge drama. In a scene, Dharani takes a decision which affects Vennela’s life. However, Dasara has another scene where Vennela questions whether she has a say in her life because she was never asked! And the hyper-masculine hero apologises.
The power dynamics in the village of Veerapally keep you hooked. However, some of the initial stretches of Dasara could test your patience. Nani’s Dharani holds back for the most part of the film, while Deekshit as Suri takes the cake. It is probably because of this that the interval sequence leaves you in a state of shock.
Nani is the soul of Dasara. From expressing his vulnerabilities to crying his heart out and emoting in silence, he has given his career-best performance. Keerthy, too, has a meaty role in the film. It is actually Suri who stole the show with his effortless acting.
Something that Srikanth Odela could have worked on is the characterisation of the villain, Shine Tom Chacko. It treads on a wafer-thin line and after a point, it does not create an impact.
Santhosh Narayanan’s music and Sathyan Sooryan’s visuals make Dasara what it is. The film could remind you of Dhanush’s Asuran and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara. While the film deals with a predictable story, it does have enough meat to hold onto its own.

Dasara Movie Review: Raw and Rustic
Movie: Dasara Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Cinemas Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith Shetty, Samuthirakani, Shine Tom Chacko, Sai Kumar, Poorna and others Dialogues: Thota Srinivas Music: Santhosh Narayanan Director of Photography: Sathyan Sooryan Editor: Navin Nooli Production Designer: Avinash Kolla Stunts: Real Satish, Anbariv Producer: Sudhakar Cherukuri Written and Direction: Srikanth Odela Release Date: March 30, 2023
Nani had never spoken so confidently about a film or toured across India to promote it before 'Dasara.' The film has received a lot of attention in recent weeks. Nani's promotion of the film gave the impression that it would be a major milestone. Is it really that good?
Let us look into it.
Story: Set in the 1990s in a village called Veerlapally in the Singareni coal mine area, the film begins with the story of three childhood friends, Dharani (Nani), Soori (Deekshith Shetty), and Vennela (Keerthy Suresh).
The villagers are always drinking and spend most of their time at Silk bar. Local politics between Rajanna (Saikumar), Shivanna(Samuthirakani) and the latter's son Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko) threaten to disrupt their lives.
What effect does a political leader's game plan have on the lives of the three friends?
Artistes’ Performances: For this film, Nani reinvented himself. He played a rustic character for the first time, which was unlike any of his previous roles. He sinks into the role and delivers an amazing outcome. The effort he has put in for the role is evident throughout, and he is the film's main pillar.
The award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh delivers another believable performance in the author-backed role. She is the central character around whom the plot revolves.
Deekshith Shetty, who plays the hero's friend, gives an effective performance. Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko has also given a good performance. There are many actors, but none of them receive adequate recognition.
Technical Excellence: The film's cinematography is the first thing that stands out because the film is entirely set in a coal mine. The dark color palette of the color scheme works so well with Sooryan's imaginative camera work.
The music by Santosh Narayanan yields mixed results. The production design is flawless, and the production values are excellent. The dialogues are neat.
Highlights: Nani’s performances Keerthy Suresh Interval bang Villain reveal scene
Drawback: Slow pace Predictable sequences Loses the steam at many places
Analysis "Dasara" makes its intentions clear from the start, with the hero entering the scene in a coal mine area and his friend assisting him. The scene establishes the story's theme of friendship, and gradually introduces the lives of the two friends, as well as the villagers addicted to alcohol in the coal mine area. It is also quickly established that the two friends are in love with the same girl, Keerthy Suresh. So, the first sections are predictable and move at a slow pace.
However, the film is more about creating atmosphere and focusing on characters than it is about plot. The design of the hero's character is impressive. He's timid and only gains courage when he consumes alcohol. And when he drinks, he loses control and can do whatever he wants. This characteristic trait of the protagonist is used so effectively in the later portions of the film, including the interval twist.
Additionally, there are cultural and social references that are properly established, such as women in Telangana performing Bhatukamma during the Dasara festival and Ravana's effigy being burnt on the festival day. The director effectively employs these cultural aspects in his storytelling.
If we take these elements out of the film, it becomes more or less a typical revenge drama. Srikanth Odela, the new director, has prioritized mood and visual palette over story.
The film's biggest surprise is the interval bang. The pre-interval chase sequence and the intermission bang are handled expertly, revealing the villain's true intentions at the start of the second half. As a consequence, the remainder becomes more predictable, and many sequences are bland. The running time is also too long, and the film definitely needs sharp editing.
Furthermore, the film, whether intentionally or unintentionally, attempts to follow the template of "Rangasthalam," but lacks the gripping screenplay that the Sukumar movie had. Caste politics are also mentioned in the film, but they are not properly established.
Additionally, the period (probably set in the 1990s) is shown as if it happened in the 60's or 70's, even though most villages had more modern facilities by the 1990s, even in remote coal mine areas.
Overall, "Dasara" is a regular revenge drama that relies more on visual style and grand making than the plot. It is watchable because of its ambition and Nani’s performance.
Bottom line: DasaRAW
- 'Devara' Review: Visually Grand, Emotionally Bland
- Mathu Vadalara 2 Review: Fun Start, Slow Finish

‘Dasara’ movie review: Nani, Keerthy Suresh lead this gritty, emotional ride
Srikanth odela makes an assured directorial debut with the telugu film ‘dasara’, exploring caste politics in a mainstream format, backed by good performances from the cast led by nani and keerthy suresh.

Dasara, written and directed by first-timer Srikanth Odela, ventures into a space that mainstream Telugu films do not often dare to. It tries to be a ‘massy’ Telugu film that explores the ugly caste politics in a semi-fictional story set in the coal-laden hamlet Veerlapally, Telangana, with earnestness, and achieves this balance reasonably well. One of Dasara’s highlights is a chilling pre-intermission episode. The three central characters — Dharani (Nani), Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) and Suri (Deekshit Shetty) — are integral to the happenings. There is no scope for the display of machismo or bravado. The fear-inducing episode made me wonder, briefly, if this was the real incident based on which Srikanth had written this semi-fictional story.
First, to address the elephant in the room, Dasara is not a wannabe Pushpa or KGF . Rather, it tries to bring in the grittiness of Tamil films such as Jai Bhim, Asuran and Karnan , in its depiction of power equations. Dasara is also in a zone similar to Rangasthalam , one of the few significant ‘massy’ Telugu films that explored caste dynamics in recent years.
It takes a while to warm up to the world of Dasara , where alcohol excess is a way of life, a way of escaping the travesty of the daily grind. For the men in the village, life revolves around the only bar named ‘Silk bar’. Srikanth tips his hat to the sultry Silk Smitha.
The bar is where the rules of power become evident. The upper caste men drink inside the bar while the others stay outside. A backstory of the conflicts within a powerful family, involving the characters played by Saikumar and Samuthirakani and later Shine Tom Chacko, forms the undercurrent for the power dynamics in the village. Srikanth places the three childhood friends Dharani, Suri and Vennela in this milieu. Their names aligning with the earth, sun and the moon are metaphors for their characters and relationships.
Cast: Nani, Keerthy Suresh, Deekshith Shetty
Direction: srikanth odela, music: santhosh narayanan.
The film draws us into Veerlapally that is carefully built through its many characters, Avinash Kolla’s production design, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan’s stunning frames in brown-black, earthy brownish-reds and the smart use of oil lanterns, along with Santhosh Narayanan’s rustic-meets-jazzy haunting musical score. Pay attention to the score in the cricket match that turns out to be a battle between the caste groups. Added to this, the rural Telangana dialect and the songs that mirror the region’s cultural ethos make the film all the more rooted.
As Suri and Vennela, Deekshith Shetty and Keerthy take centre stage, Nani stays in the background and the narrative is in no rush to push him to the fore. The bonding between the three is depicted beautifully, punctuated occasionally with humour. One of the earlier sequences in the police station helps to delineate the naivete of Dharani as opposed to the comparatively smarter approach by Suri.
Srikanth narrates the story of the hamlet as an insider, depicting how men are numbed by alcohol and why the fact that women voters outnumber men is actually not a reason to rejoice. Not yet. Once the power dynamics is displayed at full throttle, as expected, the underdog rises to hit back and fight for survival. When he etches his name on a sword, you cannot help but root for him.
In the latter half, a sudden shift in the relationship equation between two characters happens when you least expect it. Was it just a ‘mass’ moment to announce the arrival of a saviour? This comes after a tear-jerker sequence that seems plucked from some of the Tamil and Telugu movies of the 1990s. These are the portions in which the narrative wobbles a bit. But the narrative redeems itself in an endearing scene where Vennela questions if she has no say in her life decisions and the man, though his heart beats for her and he intended to protect her, apologises.
The quiet, understated romance that follows, sets the tone for the final encounter that runs parallel to Ravana dahanam . The motive of the antagonist is a trope that we have often seen in cinema. However, it serves to draw a parallel to the battle between Ram and Ravana.
Deekshit Shetty is a revelation as Suri and shows that he is an actor with immense potential. Dasara is no Mahanati for Keethy Suresh. Nevertheless, she is central to the drama and gives it her all. She portrays Vennela’s spring in the step as a young bride and later the quiet resignation to fate followed by resilience convincingly. Jhansi and the several supporting actors contribute by doing their parts well. The film ultimately belongs to Nani. In a completely de-glam part, watch him cower in fear and later in shame that he cannot think straight under the influence of alcohol. Several portions require him to convey his emotions with his body language and silence, and he is fantastic. In the final episode, he displays the rage of Dharani in full glory.
Dasara is not perfect. A few tropes could have been smarter. But this is a film with a lot of heart and succeeds in hitting the sweet spot between a gritty drama and a ‘massy’ mainstream film.

Dasara Movie Review – Intense melodrama works partially !
Dasara Review
Telugu360 Rating : 2.75/5
Natural Star Nani is gearing up for the biggest bet in his career. Directed by Srikanth Odela, Dasara is a rustic Telangana-based village drama. Keerthy Suresh played the leading lady and the music composed by Santosh Narayanan is a massive hit. Sudhakar Cherukuri’s SLV Cinemas are the producers and the film is hitting the screens today. Here is the review of Dasara:
Dasara is a rustic village story that revolves around three friends Dharani ( Nani) , Vennela ( Keerthy Suresh), and Suri ( Shetty). Set in 1995, the Crux of the story is how sarpanch Nambi (played by Shine Tom Chacko) impacts the lives of the lead trio. The film is set in the backdrop of singareni mines of Telangana.
Dasara film comes with a lot of expectations but meets them only partially. The village backdrop films are nothing new to us, but to give a different look to the film, the team has picked a Telangana village backdrop. The completely rustic setup came out well and the characters synchronized into the story effectively. Debutante direct Srikanth Odela has done decent work in many aspects but missed an opportunity to convert it into a great film. The story has its moments around the interval block and in post-interval scenes. The sarpanch Nambi thread came out well. The friendship and sacrifice thread of Dharani and Suri worked out for a while. Dharani’s decision in a crucial scene has much potential to generate emotions in the second half but the narration revolves around revenge drama only.
The superhit song ‘ Chamkhila Angeelesi’ comes at a serious juncture, very ineffective on the screen. The story is too simplified and lost its steam somewhere in middle. The climax fight appeals to the masses, but the closing scene (return of Nani) is a misfired one.
A noticeable strength of the film is the dialogue department; they are good in many scenes. Director Srikanth Odela has shown strength in making at Interval block and climax. The introduction train sequence with cheap graphics is a failed attempt. Santhosh Narayanan’s music and background score is good. Suryan’s cinematography is excellent. Capturing the shot effectively even in low-lighting scenes is good. Overall, this film scores well in the technical department.
Performances:
Nani delivers career-best performance; we cannot imagine anyone else in Dharani’s role. His Telangana diction is so perfect as well. Keerthy Suresh in de glamour role is just fine; a couple of her scenes are overaction. Dheekshith Shetty as suri a good casting. Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko plays the main villain character and he is good. Samudrakhani got an insignificant role. Saikumar’s role is minimal and so is Jhansi as Keerthy suresh’s mother.
- Nani’s career-best performance
- Rustic and Raw Scenes with a new backdrop
- Action Episodes are good
- Impressive dialogues
- Emotions did not work except in a couple of scenes
- Very Slow paced narration
- Predictability
Dasara is an average film with raw scenes and an authentic setup. Hero Nani’s outstanding natural performance, Debutante director Srikanth’s spark in some scenes, and action blocks compensate for the slow proceedings to an extent. The second half is a slow-paced one and tests patience here and there. Overall, a decent watch.

Devara REVIEW: HIT or FLOP? Is Jr NTR, Janhvi Kapoor's film worth the hype? Read this
Devara First Review: Anirudh Ravichander, Devara's soundtrack composer, wrote a review for Jr NTR and Siva Koratala's film, which went viral on social media. The much-awaited Jr NTR film will be in theatres from September 27 in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Anirudh Ravichander used the same technique for the release of Rajinikanth's Jailer, as well as for Leo and Jawan. The soundtrack composer tweeted about Devara, only five days before the film's massive release on September 27. His emoticons and the hashtag #Devara indicate that he has seen the film and expects it will be a success at the box office.
Anirudh maintains the custom of assessing his films before their release. Now it remains to be seen what awaits us on Friday. Meanwhile, Anirudh's tweet on the Devara movie has fans in a frenzy. One of the users commented, "The Last Same tweet from Ani was for INDUSTRY HIT JAILER." while another called it "Sure shot BB."

Two years after the award-winning 'RRR', Junior NTR is back with his latest venture 'Devara: Part 1', directed by Koratala Siva. While the former is returning afresh after massive success, the latter's flick 'Acharya' had bombed at the box office.
The movie has Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor in the female lead. Shruti Marathe, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Narain, Ajay and others are in the cast. Kollywood's top musician Anirudh Ravichander has scored the music, R Rathnavelu has handled the cinematography and A Sreekar Prasad's editing.
'Devara: Part 1' Story
Devara: Part 1 presents a gripping action drama set in the coastal village of Ratnagiri, where complex relationships and dark secrets unfold over time. The film revolves around Devara (Jr NTR), Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan), and other key figures involved in smuggling operations. Tensions rise when Devara, realizing the immorality of their activities, clashes with Bhaira, leading to a life-changing fallout. Devara's sudden disappearance creates a mystery that looms large for twelve years. Bhaira, now ruling Ratnagiri, is still hell-bent on hunting down Devara, and his son Vara's involvement with Bhaira adds layers of intrigue. The unfolding of this revenge-driven narrative is what drives the film.
Devara Review
r NTR delivers a standout dual performance, portraying Devara's humility and ferocity, while also nailing the vulnerability and innocence of his son, Vara. His nuanced acting is central to the film's success. Saif Ali Khan, making a powerful entry into Tollywood, impresses as the vengeful Bhaira. Janhvi Kapoor, though in a limited role, adds a fun dynamic, especially in her scenes with young NTR.
The action sequences are well-executed, keeping the audience engaged, and the punchy dialogues further elevate Devara's character. Supporting actors like Srikanth and Prakash Raj add value with their performances.
While the story is engaging, it lacks unpredictability, particularly in the second half, where the pace slows down. Director Koratala Siva's writing, although strong in the first half, could have been tighter in the latter portion. Also, Saif Ali Khan's character could have been more impactful toward the film's climax, which feels abrupt.
Visually, the film shines with Ratnavelu's cinematography, and Anirudh Ravichander's music enhances the emotional and dramatic moments. However, the editing, especially in the second half, could have been sharper. The action choreography is commendable, and the production values are top-notch.
In short, 'Devara' is a satisfying watch with a strong first half, captivating action sequences, and a stellar performance from Jr NTR. While the film falters with a predictable second half and underutilized characters, it's still worth a watch for its high-energy moments and Jr NTR's compelling portrayal.

The movie, which is releasing in multiple languages, has generated a lot of buzz around it with promos and trailer. Moreover, the fans of Junior NTR is desperately awaiting to see him on-screen after two years. Will the movie live up to their expectations? Find out:
Venky Reviews: #Devara A Passable Action Drama with a Good 1st Half but a 2nd half that was dragged in parts till the pre-climax.
Koratala showed a lot of promise in his writing in the 1st half and setup the story well. However, the 2nd half should've been racier and became too predictable after a point.
NTR gave a terrific performance and has carried this one on his shoulders. Anirudh is the lifeline of the movie and has done very well in terms of music.
Film has some super blocks but at the same time blocks that had below par execution. Ends up as a Satisfactory Watch that can be given a try!
Apart from a few dips here and there, So far a proper action drama that is racy for the most part. NTR is at his best. Few blocks have came out superbly and Anirudh is doing great.

Negatives: 👉Few Lags
At Theatres: #Devara - 1.75/5 - Koratala's Another Acharya Devara is nothing more than Koratala Siva garu's careless story-telling. The conflict in the film is weak, the dynamics are poor, and the twist is predictable. Cinematography is okayish, and the much-hyped shark sequence becomes a joke.
Though Saif's character is strong, the arc is weak, and Janhvi Kapoor's screen time is restricted to songs, NTR is good.
You can watch it once for the Aayudha Pooja song, which is worth seeing on a large screen for NTR's fantastic dance. The rest can be easily avoided.

Fukkard: #Devara is Disappointing
We were excited for this magnum opus after hearing the songs and seeing the release trailer, but it did not live up to our expectations in terms of story or visual effects. Anirudh is one of the few people who did their job from the start. Siva Koratala's subtle writing strains the patience. NTR's outstanding performance is wasted. We are not sure why Jahnavi Kapoor was taken into this film.
For those who were hoping for something exceptional, Devara is a huge disappointment overall.
SHAIK MAHABOOB BASHA: Thank you koratala garu for the #Devara character. Best in @tarak9999 career. Hero ela dance eyali anukunnamo ala eyinchav ayuda pooja song lo.. Asala ultimate ayya.. Pre interval Music bit ki dance kuda peaks.. Mass character kasi ga rasav .. Blockbuster 💥💥💥💥
Idlebrain Jeevi: Done with first half of #Devara! NTR is superb in all aspects. Anirudh's BGM and songs are highlights. Action sequences and cinematography top notch! Has very good elements for fans, masses and family crowds so far! Blockbuster కళ పుష్కలంగా కనిపిస్తుంది! 👍
Thyview: #Devara delivers solid mass moments, with @tarak9999's intensity and @anirudhofficial score standing out. Koratala Siva knows how to keep the energy high, but I couldn't help but feel there was room for deeper character exploration. The last few minutes, setting up the sequel, felt a bit underwhelming. Overall, it's better than decent but falls short of being truly great. Still, with its high points and strong performances combined with terrific score , it's a watch that keeps you engaged and entertained.
Rahul Kumar Pandey: Just finished watching #Devara and I'm blown away! 🤯 The visuals, the action, the performances... everything is top-notch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #JrNTR absolutely delivers a powerhouse performance. This is shaping up to be the next big South Indian blockbuster, right up there with Baahubali. Can't wait to see it again!
Courtney Howard: #Devara is an explosive, exhilarating & flat-out terrific adrenaline rush. It Goes Hard, bringing together giant-scale ferocity, pulse-quickening stakes & brawling action. Dance & fight choreography are propulsive. N.T. Rama Rao Jr. brings the fire & charisma. FUN STUFF!
Ravi @🔥🔥Prabhas Army 🔥🔥🦕: #Devara movie has bad internal reviews. That's why it was sold for so less in other languages. Producers r looking to recover as much as possible on Day 1, so they started showing big numbers when BMS data shows its very poor sales. Artificial inflation by over hyping using sites seems to be the idea as it'll be white wash after talk comes out

Panipuri: 👉A jaw-dropping pre-climax where the elder #Devara takes center stage in a mind-blowing, #Hollywood-level action sequence. This is where the true motive of the character, who's ready to either lay down his life or fight for his people, comes crashing into the open (ఊరి జనం కోసం తల ఇవ్వడానికైనా,తల తీయడానికైనా సిద్ధమే ).
👉The intensity of the sequence, paired with #Anirudh's electrifying score, is said to deliver such massive impact that audiences won't even have a moment to catch their breath.

👉In this action sequence, where we witness the powerful transformation of #Devara's son-from a fearful, hesitant individual to an unstoppable force. His evolution is set to explode on-screen, marking a pivotal moment in the film.
👉#KoratalaSiva orchestrated this father-son dynamic, driving a deep wedge between their personalities, is said to be nothing short of brilliant. Prepare for something extraordinary.
