Aliens are a diverse race of antagonistic creatures that originate from worlds beyond that of the main setting; they can be extraplanetary and extragalactic in origin. Even some humans who are not native to Earth but are virtually identical to Earth humans in every way and are native to the worlds beyond other than said planet can be classified as aliens.

If they come from alternate dimensions or before existence itself (e.g. Minions , Bill Cipher , It ) they do not count.

Renee Longstreet from Common Sense Media gave the film a two-star rating, stating: "Kids will find some laughs and some characters to like here, but the primitive special effects and general amateurish production make this movie hard to recommend."

Brendan Campbell from Inside Impulse wrote: "Aliens At My Homework is a fairly fast-moving movie at 90-minutes, and fans who read the book will likely be happy to see the characters they’ve read about come to life."

Video Librarian gave it three stars, saying: "Unapologetically cheesy as effects-heavy sci-fi films go, Aliens Ate My Homework makes up for a lot of hokey ray-guns, miniature spaceships, and a talking shrub (or something) with clever, ironic humor that appeals to the middle-schooler in us all."

Positive Messages

Values promoted: healthy and respectful disagreement and teamwork -- each individual has a part to play in a successful task. It's important to overlook our differences and find ways to connect.

Positive Role Models

Young hero, the victim of a bully, gains self-confidence, courage, and pride in his own abilities. His cousin and partner, a know-it-all girl, learns to be less judgmental and rigid. Adults are responsible, caring. Some ethnic diversity.

Violence & Scariness

Mild action and suspense. Aliens, with one exception, are more humorous than scary. The one exception: A boy transforms into an alien villain with hideous teeth and threatening demeanor. Ray-gun fire, lightning storm. Characters are shaken, threatened, momentarily frozen, held captive, and chased. A bully smooshes a large bug onto his victim's head and face. Visuals of creepy crawlies: a tarantula, a scorpion.

Parents need to know.

Parents need to know that Aliens Ate My Homework is a live-action adaptation of the first book in Bruce Coville 's successful series, Rod Allbright and the Galactic Patrol . In this origin story, Rod Allbright (Jayden Greig), a 12-year-old boy, is visited by aliens who are out to save Earth. The miniature beings, more humorous than scary, crash-land in a miniature spaceship in Rod's bedroom. Expect frequent mild action: ray guns, lightning, characters (including small children) frozen in place as hostages and held captive. ( Spoiler alert : The villain is vanquished when he's pelted with muck.) Another sixth-grader bullies the hero and his friend, mashing a large bug into his victim's hair and face. Words like "booger" and "fart" are used to get laughs. Some sad moments relate to Rod's father disappearing three years earlier in a turbulent storm. But overall it should be OK for kids who are comfortable with real vs. pretend violence. To stay in the loop on more movies like this, you can sign up for weekly Family Movie Night emails .

Absolute garbage..

What's the story.

Rod Allbright's dad, dedicated to making science fun for his family, disappears when a strange storm carries him away in ALIENS ATE MY HOMEWORK. But before he is whooshed away, he promises Rod that he'll return. Three years later, Rod (Jayden Greig), now a sixth-grader, still misses his dad terribly but never stops believing that he'll come back. Bullied at school by the ruthless Billy (Ty Consiglio), Rod and his best friend, Mickey (Sean Quan), are simply outmatched. But things are going to change for Rod Allbright. To his utter amazement, a miniature spaceship crash-lands in his bedroom. Four very small (action figure-sized) alien members of "The Galactic Patrol" -- three creatures and a talking plant (voiced by William Shatner ) -- are in desperate need of his help. Their mission is to find B'kr, a ferocious villain guilty of the galaxy's greatest crime: cruelty. Certain B'kr is masquerading as a human, they must stop him before he can execute his plan to destroy the earth. It's all overwhelming at first. Not only does he have to keep the Galaxy Patrol's arrival secret and help them repair their damaged spacecraft, but his annoying cousin Elspeth (Lauren McNamara) has also arrived to stay with his family. And, most bizarre of all, the evil B'kr may be posing as someone Rod knows!

Is It Any Good?

Kids will find some laughs and some characters to like here, but the primitive special effects and general amateurish production make this movie hard to recommend. What's good about the film -- an inventive premise and the emphasis on science -- came from the book. It's clear that having William Shatner on board was a casting coup for the filmmakers, but his performance is more annoying than engaging. A crucial plot element, the disappearance of Rod Allbright's dad, isn't resolved, and the movie's ending indicates that there will be further adventures. On a positive note, Aliens Ate My Homework may inspire some kids to read the popular Coville book series, and that's always a good thing.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the violence in Aliens Ate My Homework. Even though it's a live-action movie, the action is more cartoon-like than real. What is the impact of violence on kids? Does cartoon violence lessen that impact? Why or why not?

How did the arrival of the Galactic Patrol help Rod work out his own issues? With Billy? With Elspeth? In what ways did Rod change over the course of his adventure?

The Drake Equation -- estimating the possibility of other lifeforms in the cosmos -- really exists. Have you ever thought about that possibility? Create your own ideal planet or star. What would the civilization and its inhabitants look like? What kind of world would it be?

IT'S THE WEIRDEST ALIEN

INVASION EVER!

"I cannot tell a lie," says Rod Allbright. And it's the truth. Ask him a question and he's bound to give you an honest answer. Which is why, when his teacher asks what happened to last night's math assignment, Rod has to give the only answer he can: "Aliens ate my homework, Miss Maloney!"

Of course, no one believes Rod this time, so they don't bother to ask him why the aliens are here. It's just as well, since he is sworn to silence about their secret mission and the fact that he has been drafted to help them!

Aliens ate my homework.

Written by Bruce Coville

Illustrated by Katherine Coville

Reviewed by Kevin C. (age 9)

In this story, a space ship crashes through a boy's window and falls into his room. The boy's name in Rod. The aliens tell him that their ship is broken and that they need to stay with him for a while. Then one day, when Rod came home from school the aliens told him that a boy in his school named Billy Becker is really an alien criminal from outer space! The aliens said that they have been searching for him for a long time but never caught him. Rod reacts by yelling, "I'm going to get him!" In the ending there is a surprise! The illustrations are very good. The illustrator put a lot of detail into them. The only thing I didn't like about the pictures is that they were black and white.

I like this book a lot because I like books about aliens. I would recommend this book to others because it is very interesting when the ship goes through the window and other things. I don't think girls would want to read this book because I don't think that girls would want to read about aliens.

Synopsis [ ]

Henry is a master of excuses when it comes to not giving in your homework. However, this time it looks as though he may have gone too far.

The episode begins with Mum and Peter in the kitchen, with Mum making toast and Peter eating cereal. She angrily calls for Henry to come down for breakfast, and Henry plods into kitchen, still wearing his pyjamas while Peter is dressed. Mum notices this, and scolds Henry for still being in his pyjamas. Henry ignores this, and sits down at the table, saying he's hungry while sighing. Henry then fills his cereal bowl with Sweet Tweets while Peter finishes his own breakfast. Peter gets down from his chair and thanks Mum for a delicious breakfast, and Mum quickly tells Peter not to forget his homework, handing it to him. Peter says he won't, and thanks Mum, before going out into the hallway. Mum asks if Henry's done his, and Henry hesitates for a moment, and Mum tells him that if he hasn't she wouldn't like to imagine what Miss Battle-Axe will say to him. Henry then imagines Miss Battle-Axe telling him to sit at the front with the girls, write one thousand lines of "I will do my homework." and clean out the store cupboard.

Frightened, Henry asks if Mum could write him a note saying he didn't do his homework because. Henry struggles to find a reason why when Mum asks him, and Peter comes downstairs with his backpack, coming into the kitchen and says "Why don't you just tell her the truth, Henry?"

Henry then remembers why he didn't do his homework, which was actually because he was picking between doing his homework or watching Too Cool for School . Fluffy then turned on the remote control, and Henry decided to watch TV. Mum repeats what Peter said, and Henry says he can't. Mum shakes her head and picks up the Sweet Tweets box, and looks at something on the back. She reads 'aliens ate my cereal packer'.' and scoffs at the idea. Henry then goes "Eureka!" and says aliens save the day, slamming his hand down on the table and sending his cereal bowl, still filled with milk and cereal, flying onto Peter's head. Peter screams "NOOOOOOOO!" which opens the title card.

Miss Battle-Axe is collecting her students homework, and goes up to Henry. She asks where his homework is, and Henry says the aliens ate it. Miss Battle-Axe asks how stupid Henry thinks she is, and Henry says not at all. Miss Battle-Axe then sits down on Henry's table, and asks about the aliens. Henry begins.

Henry says that it all began when he and Peter were playing snap, with Dad in the room, reading a book, just before having an early night (in this story, Henry is perfect, like Peter, while Peter is scared). Henry and Peter both say snap, and place a card at the same time. Henry then lets Peter take the card, and Mum comes in, saying it's time for bed. Henry is happy, and asks if they're having an early night. Mum says yes, and asks Henry if he'd like some hot chocolate. Mum says no, saying thank you in the process, and explains he's already brushed his teeth. He and Mum then smile at each other, and Peter dares Henry to race him upstairs. Henry and Peter then run up the stairs, laughing and giggling, as Mum and Dad watch, smiling. The two run into Henry's room and bounce onto Henry's bed, but Peter notices a light coming from Henry's fort. Henry then says he's going to investigate, and Peter says while he would go with Henry, he's scared. Henry tells Peter to stay where he's safe, and Henry, with a torch, goes to look. He opens the fort curtain, and finds Fluffy walking out of it. Henry, relieved, is about to leave, but then hears some weird sounds from inside the fort. That's when he sees aliens . Scared, Henry attempts to run away, but bangs into the alien spaceship. Some green lights flash down on him, and the spaceship opens up, as more aliens come out.

Henry says hi, and introduces himself. The aliens talk to him and each other in an unknown language. Henry compliments their spaceship, and they then force him into the spaceship, closing it behind them. Peter, watching from Henry's bedroom window, is shocked, but Henry is suddenly thrown out of the spaceship because he picked his nose. Henry then stares at the window, and the aliens look at Peter. They briefly talk amongst themselves, before heading inside the house, coming back out, carrying Peter. Henry tries to stop them, but they take Peter into the spaceship, and disappear into the night sky. Miss Battle-Axe then ask what happened next, and Henry says he was really worried about Peter. Miss Battle-Axe asks if that was true, or if he really could not wait to tell everyone what happened. The scene then shows various images, such as Henry giving a report, and many newspaper clippings about the aliens and Peter. Henry denies this, and says he couldn't help but think about all the good times he and Peter had, like Henry spraying Peter with a water gun, Henry pretending to be a cowboy and ride on Peter, and tying Peter to a tree, all while Peter is screaming for Mum. Miss Battle-Axe then asks what this all has to do with Henry's homework.

The scene changes to Henry snoring on the kitchen table with his homework, when he suddenly wakes up due to seeing the spaceship once again in his garden. Henry runs out, and is greeted by Peter, who comes down to see him. Henry pants, and asks if Peter is okay. The aliens then also come down, and wave. Peter tells them to shush, and reminds them of what they agreed. The aliens walk down, onto the grass. They all find partners, line up, and dance. When they're done, Peter says they've done a good job, and says they are all as good as gold. The aliens seem happy by this, and Peter tells them to remember to keep their spaceship nice and tidy, and then say they have to say goodbye. The aliens seem unhappy, and Peter reminds them of what they agreed: they would go back to earth, they would do the dance together, and the aliens would go away and leave them in peace. The aliens talk to each other for a moment, and seem to disagree. They then attempt to take Peter again, but Henry stops them, and offers them his homework instead, saying it holds all the secrets of universe. The aliens seem fascinated by it, and the two brothers take the chance to run inside while the aliens are distracted. Henry and Peter watch from the kitchen window as the aliens break the homework book into pieces, eat it, go back inside the spaceship, and fly away. Peter congratulates Henry on getting rid of the aliens, and hugs him, calling him the best big brother in the world. Henry calls Peter worm, but quickly changes it to little brother, saying he's glad Peter's home. Henry then says that that is the reason he has no homework to give Miss Battle-Axe, and Miss Battle-Axe calls him mistaken. Henry is confused, and Miss Battle-Axe explains the homework assignment was creative writing, and Henry's story was very creative. It was so creative, that Miss Battle-Axe says she'd like Henry to share it with someone else.

The scene changes to Henry and Peter standing in front of Peter's class, and Peter says Henry will be telling them the story of how he saved him from the aliens. but first, they'll sing Peter's special song together, ' Buttercups And Daisies '. Peter sings the first verse, and Henry, miserably sings the second, ending the episode.
