The 5 Main Qualities of a Head Boy/Girl at School

That time of year is upon us. The election of a new head student team.  Depending on which school you attend, the time is commencing where the old head student team steps down and offers up their places to a team of new individuals. The various methods of voting will differ between schools, however, ultimately, students and teachers alike will be searching for a strong leader who they feel will improve the school community. If you are at the age of applying to become a head boy or girl, then you may be wondering whether you are the ideal candidate for the role.   This article will provide you with guidance and information about the top five qualities that a head girl/boy should possess.   

Disclaimer:  this article is subjective as different schools will have different opinions on what qualities make a good candidate for the role of head girl/boy, however I hope this article will give you a rough guide!  

A good head girl/boy should be a strong leader with the ability to listen to not only those who shout the loudest, but every voice in the student body. Communication is clearly an important skill to have, in order to pass on ideas of the students for them to become a reality. As a head girl/boy, you will most likely be accompanied by deputies with whom you need to work alongside as a team , and therefore a good candidate should  understand the importance of being part of something bigger than themselves. Finally, optimism and respect come hand-in-hand  when it comes to being a role model to other students.   

The above briefly summarizes the main qualities of a head girl/boy but continue reading this article to help you understand what you can do if you are considering applying for the role, to make your application the best it can possibly be!

1. Leadership

This goes without saying, but any role to do with being the head of an organisation (which will be useful later on in life when applying for jobs) leans on the value of leadership. It can be defined as the  “art of motivating people to act to achieve a common goal ”. In terms of being a head girl/boy, this ‘common goal’ could be something as simple as making the school more environmentally friendly or raising money for a charity event. Regardless of the outcome, it is  important that as a head girl/boy, you develop the skill of leadership to allow not only yourself but the community around you to flourish.   

Good leadership doesn’t just mean listening to the individuals that have the most prominent voices in the student community, but also  taking the time to encourage and listen  to the quieter ones – this means that nobody is excluded, and any decisions made are agreed upon across the most amount of people, so this ensures that you are  representing the student body as best as you can .   

Whilst this may seem daunting to some applicants, do not let this hold you back!  Leadership is a skill that can only really be improved when put into practice  so if you think that your leadership skills are not strong, do not let this deter you from applying for the role. To help you develop this skill,  consider the previous leadership roles which you may have unknowingly filled , for example coaching at a sports club or in scouting.   

2. Communication

With this value being linked closely with leadership, communication is a vital quality needed for a leadership role such as head girl/boy. It means that you are  able to pass on  students’  ideas and essentially voice the student body  which is arguably one of the main roles of being a head student.  Whilst communicating frequently with students, you also need to be able to communicate well with members of staff and your fellow deputies to ensure that everyone is able to contribute to a specific idea in order to make it the best it can be. Being a head girl/boy may also mean that you need to speak during whole school assemblies and therefore it is important that  you are able to connect and relate with the audience  that you are presenting to,  in order to make it a more interactive experience for all.   

Communication doesn’t necessarily mean talking all the time; it can involve reaching out to those who don’t always speak up – the more students that you can empathise with, the better leader you will be – it means that all voices are heard and appreciated . Good communication can also be achieved through media including a school magazine or school news, or even non-verbally by being open and friendly to approach.   

This means that the students will put greater trust in you and are therefore more likely to feel comfortable to raise issues directly to you,  which makes the communication process run a lot more smoothly.  Good communication means that you can easily place yourself in other people’s shoes and vice versa, which makes general understanding a lot more free-flowing and allows genuine assurance between students.   

Similarly, to leadership,  communication is a quality that gets better the more it is used , however it occurs more naturally compared with leadership as it is something that we inevitably do every day. If you previously were part of a club or society where you were in charge of organising an event, that would have required a lot of different communication skills, you won’t be a stranger to this skill. If you haven’t participated in any of the latter, don’t stress yourself- you can easily volunteer to be part of a social event or club where communication skills can be improved.   

3. Teamwork 

Typically, the selection of a head girl/boy is accompanied by the selection of two deputies whom the head student works closely alongside. Therefore, it is evident that teamwork certainly cannot be dismissed as an unimportant quality when it comes to the application process.   It allows better relationships to be formed between the team member s   and thus enab les  the  ‘working environment’ to be more positive. Regardless of what career you pursue, teamwork will be inevitable and therefore practicing good teamwork early on will not only be beneficial to you as a head girl/boy, but also when you get a job and are introduced to the workplace.  

Teamwork can be defined as  “the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal”  – in the context of the student community, the ‘collaborative effort’ comes with good communication to encourage students to participate and contribute as a team to better an aspect of school life. With regards to the ‘common goal’ described above, that is essentially the well-formulated idea that may have started off as just a thought in the mind of one of the students in the community. It is through good leadership and communication that a student should be able to speak up, and finally through good teamwork and collaboration between students and the head student team, that their idea is finalized into an action which is then undertaken to improve the school.  

Teamwork can be demonstrated in many different ways, through extracurriculars for example. If you are part of a sports club then you regularly display teamwork when competing, or if you are part of an orchestra or choir then working as a team to practice involves improving your teamwork.   

4. Optimism

As you progress up through the school, the initial optimism displayed during year seven is likely to have ‘slightly’ faded. However, it is an important quality when it comes to taking up a leadership role such as head girl/boy. Optimism may seem less significant than the other qualities mentioned in this article, however it is very important because it establishes a positive atmosphere and encourages participation . It essentially goes hand-in-hand with leadership, communication and teamwork because they all require a source of motivation and meaning, and therefore being optimistic about different ideas ensures that everyone feels valued. This means more progress can be made to improve the school community.   

Optimism means that you are  more likely to be resilient and take a reflective approach on failures or setbacks , which is a very important quality for a leader as it means that the whole team is inspired to persevere, which is a core value in any learning environment.   

Respect is something we may not consider when it comes to a role as highly regarded as head girl/boy however it is very crucial as we progress higher and move into the workplace. Respect not only towards staff members but also fellow students  ensure that there is a common understanding and that you are open to suggestions which helps to develop a close-knit student body.    

Respect shown towards the deputy team allows a better environment for teamwork and therefore increased productivity.  As a head girl/boy, as outlined previously,  you have a duty to ensure that every student  feels  represented in the decision that the school makes  and therefore respect towards each and every student, including their  ideas as well as their beliefs makes the student community the most inclusive that it can be.

In the British School System Head Boys and Head Girls are selected each year from an institution’s highest class of students. Each academic institution selects or elects a Head Boy and Head Girl in a slightly different manner. The Head Boy and Head Girl are expected to serve as role models to the student body, representatives of the school, and coordinators of student activities. While the roles are accompanied by a myriad of responsibilities, it also provides students with numerous opportunities.

Applying for the Position

At the Girls Global Academy 2024 Commencement Ceremony, Washington, D.C.

Thank you, Dr. O'Neal. It is an honor to be here to celebrate with you—the Girls Global Academy's first-ever graduating class. This is a momentous achievement and occasion. You are making history today! But, of course, you could not have done it alone. So let me start by acknowledging the teachers; administrators, staff, and board members of the Girls Global Academy; and the parents, grandparents, siblings, mentors, and friends who made today possible. Thank you and congratulations on a job well done.

And a very special congratulations to the Girls Global Academy Class of 2024! Soon you will embark on new journeys. I understand that many of you are going on to college in the fall, including one of you heading to my alma mater, Spelman College. (Be sure not to miss the 144th Founders Day celebration next year and the annual Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol concert in historic Sisters Chapel.) Others are off to start careers or to pursue vocational training. One of you will enter public service directly and become a member of the U.S. Air Force. That is a lot to be proud of and excited about. Whatever path you take next, I know the education and experience you gained here will guide you.

The Class of 2024 stands out. This is not only because you are the first, but also because you achieved so much all while overcoming extremely challenging circumstances by starting high school during the pandemic. Like you, I know what it is like to be the first to take a path, a path that was not always smooth and predictable. I will tell you more about that shortly.

Four years ago, all of you could have taken a more well-marked route. Instead, you had the courage to enroll at a brand new school during a global pandemic. You learned virtually during your first year. When you were able to attend your school in person for the first time, you did so with masks on, while social distancing. Forging new friendships is always challenging. It is even harder when you cannot sit next to a new classmate at the lunch table. But I know you worked hard to move your learning and your friendships beyond the screens and into real life. Now that those bonds have formed, I hope you hold on to them for many years to come, as I did with my classmates at a women's college.

As the inaugural class of the Girls Global Academy, your list of firsts is long and impressive. You formed the academy's first ever student government. You started a debate team and created cooking and DJ clubs, to name a few. You took the court and field as the first volleyball, basketball, softball, track, and cross-country teams. (I would have gone out for the softball and track teams. I was a catcher on my softball team in junior high and shot put was my event on the track team in high school.)

Everything was new, and probably a bit scary. Yet, you learned to become outspoken, you took on leadership roles, and you set an example for younger students. Through it all you grew, and you became the remarkable young women you are today.

With all those firsts, I was told that you sometimes call yourselves "the guinea pigs." I get that. However, I would like to offer a different moniker for this group: trailblazers. You bravely went where no one had gone before, and you accomplished great things through difficult challenges. To honor that, I want to tell you about a favorite trailblazer of mine and a girl who looked up to her.

The trailblazer I am thinking of is Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander. A little more than a century ago, she graduated from high school here in Washington, D.C., less than a mile away from your school. It was then called M Street High School. She went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. During her doctoral studies, she undertook research on the living standards of Black families that were migrating to Philadelphia during World War I. After completing that work, she became the second African American woman ever to earn a PhD and the first African American to earn a PhD in economics.

But in the 1920s, Dr. Alexander was actively denied entry into the economics profession on the basis of her race and sex. Some might have been crushed and deterred by the impediment. Not Dr. Alexander. Instead, she went on to blaze another trail. She became the first African American woman to earn a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Alexander was also the first African American woman to pass the bar and practice law in the state of Pennsylvania. She continued to think and write about economic issues in her legal work and public service. She went on to be a top attorney for the city of Philadelphia and served the public in many other ways, including being asked by two U.S. presidents to serve on important committees.

Dr. Alexander was also the first national president of Delta Sigma Theta, a public service sorority. My mother helped to start a Delta Sigma Theta chapter at Georgia College and State University. That is how I first learned about Dr. Alexander. In fact, when I was in seventh grade, I entered my county social science fair with a project inspired by her work: identifying the major causes of unemployment among Black Americans. I did not realize it then, but that turned out to be my first foray into economic research, which became the cornerstone of my career.

It was helpful to have trailblazers to look up to, including Dr. Alexander, but also my aunts, uncles, parents, and other relatives and family friends who played important roles in the Civil Rights Movement. They instilled in me the confidence to blaze trails of my own. I was among the first African American students to desegregate one of the schools I attended in my hometown of Milledgeville, Georgia. Although some of the students and others in the community did not welcome us, I drew strength from the example set by my family and others in the Civil Rights Movement, and from their conviction in the hope and promise of a world that could and would continually improve.

While I had an interest in economics even before I entered high school, that profession was not the first path I choose. I started Spelman as a physics and philosophy major. It was not until after my undergraduate years, when I was literally on a trail—one climbing Mount Kilimanjaro—that I discovered economics was the path for me. I was hiking alongside a British economist. By the end of that journey, he had convinced me that studying economics would provide me the tools to address some big and important questions I had pondered for a long time—as far back as when Dr. Alexander inspired my submission to the county social science fair.

Following in her footsteps, I went on to earn my PhD in economics from the University of California, Berkeley. The path of an economist led me many places, including to Moscow to research banking in pre- and post-Soviet Russia and to the White House as an economist for President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers. In 2022, President Biden nominated me to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. I am proud to say that I am the first African American woman and first woman of color to serve on the Board of Governors, a body that makes decisions affecting the entire economy and the well-being of every American.

I hope that my story, and Dr. Alexander's story, might inspire you to see that even when you encounter roadblocks, you can chart your own path and achieve great things. I know you can do that, because you established a strong foundation here at the Girls Global Academy, starting with the four pillars of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and safety.

I can see you have the spirit of sisterhood today as you celebrate all your achievements. You established a sisterhood as the first Girls Global Academy alumnae, and you also joined a broader sisterhood of strong, courageous, trailblazing women. You are scholars, earning your diploma and going on to college and onto various career paths. You worked in service to your community by each completing at least 50 service hours. The scholarship and service pillars show that you are already like Dr. Alexander, who highly valued education and used her education to improve the world. And you certainly learned the importance of safety as you started high school in the pandemic—and the importance of creating a safe environment of belonging where you can learn, be challenged, and grow, while comfortably being yourself. Holding these four pillars close will serve you well as you take the next step in your journeys.

As I conclude, I would like to thank you for allowing me to add another first—the first Girls Global Academy commencement speaker. I am deeply humbled by this honor. Once again, congratulations to the very first Girls Global Academy graduating class—the Class of 2024! We are all so proud of you and cannot wait to see what you will do.

When Hulu and Oynx Collective’s “ The Other Black Girl ” hit the airwaves, audiences weren’t ready for the cornucopia of hairstyling about to infiltrate their screens.  How women of color have their hair styled is a direct reflection of their identity. And that was just as important to the leading ladies on the show.

Speaking with Variety, Hall stressed the importance of the beauty salon to Black women showing how it’s a place where Black women gather for a sense of liberation, vulnerability and empowerment. “It’s an ongoing fight for Black women to be able to just be natural and I really hate that because we have some sisters with some beautiful textures you can do different things with, it’s unfortunate that people feel like you have to have a certain texture of hair to be “professional,” Hall passionately stated. “If you’re natural and that is what you are blessed with, why does it have to be what society says?”

With that, natural looks are what she opted for when it came to creating the show’s looks.

Nella, excited to join the company is considered a conformist, dressing in sensible office attire and sports a baby Afro. Hazel, on the other hand, is on the cool side, and wears blazers and wears long locs.

Malaika (Brittan Adebumola) is Nella’s best friend who helps her find her way through this workplace and helps Nella understand the problems tied to Hazel. Malaika’s style needed to be free of color and style to reflect her buoyant personality.

With this range of characters, Hall could incorporate a plethora of natural styles such as French twist, Afro puffs, corn rows, braids, faux locs, relaxers and wigs to achieve the various looks.

Taking place in the 70’s and 80’s, Hall grabbed inspiration from her mother and family members. “It wasn’t hard to remember what your Mom and Aunts looked like back in the day or how my Grandmother used to roll my bangs with sponge rollers,” said Hall. Nella played by Sinclair Daniel was one person to who she applied that to. Said Hall, “She’s rocking a specialized natural afro-styled wig  for the entire show until the processed more chemically relaxed style in the end.”

By the end , Nella shows up in straight hair, and seemingly has joined Diana’s side.

Hall‘s childhood skills have served her well as she is currently working on a “top secret project” while holding the work she created for “The Other Black Girl” continues to shine as she created looks for multi-racial casts, proving that when trained properly with all textures and types of hair magic can be created on and off the screen.

Report by the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia: UK response, June 2024

Ambassador Holland underlines continued UK support for the work of OSCE Mission to Serbia, including on media reforms and integration of national minorities.

Welcome back to the Permanent Council, Ambassador Braathu. Thank you for this comprehensive Report on the Mission’s activities and achievements.

Your Report clearly sets out the political context for the Mission’s work over the last 12 months. The UK welcomes your continued partnership with the Government of Serbia throughout this period, helping Serbia to meet its OSCE commitments and continue on the path of reform. 

The United Kingdom recognises that the work of the Mission in this reporting period had been strongly influenced by early elections and we welcome the formation of a new government on 1 May. The UK notes the preliminary conclusions of the ODIHR Election Observation Mission to the local elections on 2 June, stating that elections were well-administered and offered voters a wide range of political alternatives – though longstanding concerns relating to pressure on public sector employees, misuse of public resources, and media bias remain. We encourage the Serbian government to engage constructively with ODIHR and international partners to swiftly address outstanding recommendations.

The UK recognises that recent months have been dominated by sensitive issues for Serbia, including the adoption of a resolution in the UN General Assembly to create an International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. We encourage Serbia to work constructively with its neighbours and international partners to address legacies from the conflicts of the 90s, to build a more prosperous and peaceful future for all. We call on Serbia to refrain from any action and rhetoric that threatens regional stability, and to cooperate fully with efforts to hold to account those responsible for the shocking attacks in Banjska last September. We also urge action to tackle cross-border arms smuggling.

The UK welcomes the work of the OSCE Mission this year in improving the integration of national minorities, including through support to National Councils, language training for students and recruitment to the police service. We commend the Mission’s work on advancing media reforms and welcome its continued engagement. We share concerns about the continued polarisation of the media environment and the alarming rise in attacks against journalists. We thank the Mission for its swift interventions, including through its role in the Permanent Working Group for the Safety of Journalists.

The UK also particularly appreciates the Mission’s continued commitment to mainstreaming a gender equality perspective across all areas of Mission activity, including through engagement with parliament and support to universities in implementing gender action plans.

Madam Chair, we regret that it is again necessary to underline the hugely negative impact the continued non-agreement of the Unified Budget is having on the work of OSCE field missions, including through cancelled programmes and staff attrition. It is high time that participating States who are obstructing agreement look beyond a narrow national focus and ensure all OSCE institutions have the funding they need.

Ambassador Braathu, I would like to thank you once again for your leadership of the OSCE Mission to Serbia during this reporting period. I wish you and your team success in your work over the coming year.
