RRR

Straight out of Tollywood: “ RRR ,” a bigger-than-life and bolder-than-mainstream action-adventure epic, is performing mightily in international release as audiences marvel at its spectacle, embrace its emotions, and sway to its music while being repeatedly gobsmacked by its unfettered audacity. Propelled by the Telugu Cinema triumvirate of superstars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan and director S.S. Rajamouli — whose combined names are one reason for the triple-consonant title — the movie is such an irresistible and intoxicating celebration of cinematic excess that even after 187 minutes (including intermission or, as the title card announces, “InteRRRval”), you are left exhilarated, not exhausted. Which, truth to tell, is hard to say about certain comic-book movies from two major extended universes.

Mind you, the two protagonists here aren’t supposed to be superheroes. In fact, they are flesh-and-blood humans out of Indian history: Komaram Bheem, a revolutionary leader and guerrilla fighter from the Gond tribe during the British Raj; and Alluri Sitarama Raju, a similarly inclined insurgent who often led his under-equipped followers during raids on police stations to acquire firearms. There is no record of these two men ever meeting in real life. But hey, when have filmmakers ever allowed facts to get in the way of an exciting story? There also isn’t any record of their possessing any abilities more superhuman than cunning and charisma. But Rajamouli doesn’t let that bother him, either.

Popular on Variety

In the 1920s world according to “RRR” — which also stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt,” when the full title finally makes its first appearance on screen — Raju, referenced here as Ram, is a fiercely determined firebrand from Andhra Pradesh who goes undercover as a member of the British army in the hope of arming his compatriots. Early on, he demonstrates his faux loyalty to the Crown — and more or less establishes his superhumanity — by singlehandedly punching, kicking, beating and otherwise manhandling what appear to be thousands of protesters to seize a guy who tossed a rock at a portrait in a police outpost. In most action movies, this sequence would satisfy as a rousingly over-the-top climax. In “RRR,” however, it’s nothing more than a curtain-raiser.

In the Adilabad forest, the working-class-heroic Bheem establishes his own preternatural bona fides while outrunning a wolf in order to lead the beast into a trap. Unfortunately, the wolf is taken out of the equation by a tiger, who proceeds to chase Bheem. Fortunately, Bheem is more than a match for the big cat, even when the trap doesn’t quite work. The tiger roars. Bheem roars back. And if you are fortunate enough to see “RRR” in a theater, as it is meant to be, the next roar you hear will be that of a cheering audience.

The fuse is lit for an explosive meeting of these exceptional men when the British governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his crueler-than-Cruella wife Catherine (Alison Doody) go slumming in a Gond village — accompanied, of course, by a contingent of heavily armed soldiers. Catherine is enchanted by a little girl named Malli (Twinkle Sharma), and claims the child as an amusing plaything to entertain guests in their palatial Delhi home. This doesn’t go over well with the child’s mother — or anyone else in the village, for that matter — but Buxton has enough muscle power to enforce his wife’s whim of iron. He doesn’t have anyone shot only because he doesn’t want to waste expensive bullets on “brown rubbish.”

At this point, you may be tempted to shout rude things at the screen. But don’t fear: Bheem vows to journey to Delhi and, with the aid of simpatico locals, retrieve Malli. It doesn’t take long for word of Bheem’s impending arrival to reach British authorities — and it takes even less time for Ram to volunteer to find and arrest the potential troublemaker. But fate (along with the shamelessly contrived scenario by Rajamouli and co-writers Sai Madhav Burra and K.V. Vijayendra Prasad) tosses both men a curve when each sees a boy trapped in a Delhi river while flaming railroad cars drop into the water around him. Both men rush to a conveniently located bridge — Ram on horseback, Bheem on a motorcycle — and improvise a rescue detailed in another jaw-dropping action set piece.

And all of this happens in the film’s first 40 minutes.

It would be unfair to spill more beans and spoil any fun by providing additional plot details or scene descriptions. (Just wait until you see what Bheem does with a truckload of nonhuman disruptors.) Suffice it to say that Bheem and Ram develop a deep friendship without either knowing the other’s true identity or grand designs, and they greatly enjoy each other’s company until they don’t, and then they do again. There are two splendiferously spirited song-and-dance sequence where the guys delight in their bromance, and they play like fever dreams of Stanley Donen directing an action-movie remake of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Widely known as Jr NTR, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. is effective and empathy-grabbing as a seemingly ordinary man who achieves the extraordinary while evolving into an iconic hero. (He also gets a few laughs, especially during Bheem’s shy yet stealthy romance of a British beauty sweetly played by Olivia Morris.) Better yet, he has sensational chemistry with the more conventionally dashing Ram Charan. It may be overstating the case to suggest Charan carries himself with the authority and assurance of a deity — that is, when he’s not physically or emotionally anguished — but when Ram “borrows” the bow and arrow from a statue of Lord Rama, it seems less an act of sacrilege than an example of professional courtesy.

Echoes of John Woo abound in “RRR” as themes of loyalty, betrayal, and mutable identity are recurrently sounded, providing a powerful anchor of seriousness and mortal stakes during the most fantastical fights, flights and feats of derring-do. Occasionally your mind may tell you, “This is absurd!” Each time that happens, though, your heart will reply, “So what? Give me more!”

RRR Movie Review (2022)

Ss rajamouli's ‘rrr” is an entertaining masala epic with great star turns, but deeper emotions might have made this even better.

RRR Movie Review in English

RRR Movie Cast & Crew

Rajamouli's cinema is not just masala cinema but also mythological cinema. So he shapes Komaram Bheem like the Bheema from mythology, and Alluri Sitarama Raju like Lord Ram.

SS Rajamouli's much-awaited mega-epic: RRR , is set in 1920s India. The film stars NTR Jr as Komaram Bheem and Ram Charan as Alluri Sitarama Raju. These are real-life revolutionaries but RRR is not real. It is what you'd call historical fiction.

RRR may have three words in its title, but it is a movie of twos. There are two heroes, both of whom are in top form. There's NTR Jr, who is defined by water. He is an innocent man from the Gond tribe. The feelings in his face are as clear as water but when required, he can turn into a tsunami. And then there is Ram Charan as Ram, who is defined by fire. He smoulders inside and you don't want to be anywhere near him when he rages. But when required, he can be a matchstick flame, spreading gentle warmth, like he does when he becomes friends with NTR Jr.   The story is about their friendship - but with a twist. After all, can fire and water really be friends? But both have a mission, which remains separate till the end. The only thing is that both missions involve the British.   There is a superb scene where a man picks up a grenade with his arrow and fires it as a missile. We have seen arrows before. We have seen grenades before. But have you seen both together? That is a perfect metaphor for SS Rajamouli. He takes plots and events we have already seen – that's the arrow – and he attaches a grenade to it. That grenade is his secret touch, which makes the scene on paper look magnificent on screen.   Take the scene where NTR Jr and Ram Charan become friends. Now Ram Charan has been introduced in a scene involving fire and NTR Jr has been introduced in a scene by a river, water. But when they come together as friends, the scene involves both fire and water. And afterwards, they don't just shake hands. They clasp their arms while swinging in mid-air.

This is one example of the Rajamouli grenade. Very few in India understand masala cinema like him, and fewer still take it as seriously as he does. Because see the interval portion, where the friends turn foes. It is staged very similarly to the scene where they became friends. They are still holding hands and one of them is hanging in mid air. In masala cinema, this is called an echo moment – and RRR is filled with these echo moments.

After a dance scene, Ram carries Bheem on his shoulder. And when the reverse happens - i.e., when Bheem carries Ram on his shoulders - it is a war scene. A man backstabs someone. Later, this man is backstabbed by a tree, which is treated like a person – because a little earlier, we have seen a leaf fly by and caress the wounds of a man like a nurse in a hospital.

I spent half the movie marvelling at the fact that thank god there is still one industry that takes masala cinema seriously, without reducing it to MASS cinema, which is more about fans and star worship.

I said this is a movie of echoes, right – so along with two heroes, we get a scene with two coins, we get scenes with two religions (Hindu and Muslim), we get two men and their two missions, we get a necklace that is broken into two. And we get two halves that are perfectly structured. The first half makes us sympathise with NTR Jr and the second half makes us sympathise with Ram Charan, whose character is written like a robot.

And my favourite stretch in the film is the one that shows us how he became such a robot-like man. We go back to his childhood and in a stunning scene, his father doesn't let him mourn a tragedy. He just asks the boy to concentrate on his mission. And here too there is the image of clasped hands. The boy makes a promise to his father, putting his small hand in his father's hand. Ajay Devgn plays the father and he is excellent in what could be called a cameo role. Alia Bhatt is there in a cameo too. Her role is shorter than her first name.

Rajamouli's cinema is not just masala cinema but also mythological cinema. So he shapes Komaram Bheem like the Bheema from mythology, whose strength was legendary. He can roar back at a tiger and even pick up a motorbike with his bare hands, and he is given the moment where Hanuman tells Ram that he has seen Sita. After all, Bheem was Hanuman's brother.

And Alluri Sitarama Raju is literally Ram. He uses a bow and arrows. He has a fiancee named Sita, and another girl is kidnapped like Sita was, he has been on a vanvas for four years, away from his home, and the British empire is referred to as Lanka. So in a way, RRR is the story of the British as asuras and how two devas saved India. The cinematography is by Senthil Kumar and the framing is often spectacular. Ram Charan's intro scene is a one versus many fight and it is shot so cleanly and clearly that it almost makes you believe. That is the whole point right? Make-believe?

Despite the three-hour running time, I was never bored but I wished the film had been so much more. Mainly, I wished there had been more emotional moments – not just between Ram and Sita but also Ram and Bheem. They get a fun song, a great dance sequence and some comedy with a Britisher named Jenny – but this friendship needed to be established deeper for us to feel the full weight of the second half. Right now, it just looks like a series of action scenes. Even in the first half, a betrayal would have meant more had the emotions been stronger.

But then I look back at the interval scene and the way it tickles both the child and the adult in you. Just wait till you see what emerges from a truck. My eyes practically popped out, and I was reminded of how SS Rajamouli keeps talking about Amar Chitra Katha. RRR could have been better, but it's one-of-a-kind and certainly something you want to see on a big screen.

Verdict: A one-of-a-kind epic that certainly a big-screen experience

The Telugu language Indian action epic “RRR” (short for “Rise Roar Revolt”) has returned to US theaters for an exceptional one-night-only engagement on June 1st following its initial theatrical release. Some hindsight has made it easy to guess why writer/director S.S. Rajamouli has only now broken through to Western audiences with “RRR” despite his consistent box office success. Rajamouli’s latest is an anti-colonial fable and buddy drama about the imaginary combo of two real-life freedom fighters, Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) and Alluri Sitarama Raju ( Ram Charan ). “RRR” is also a fine showcase for Rajamouli’s characteristic focus on maximalist action choreography, overwhelming stuntwork and pyrotechnics, and sophisticated computer graphics.

By the time he made “RRR,” Rajamouli had already developed his brand of Nationalistic self-mythologizing with some help from recurring collaborators like regular story writer (and biological father) Vijayendra Prasad and both co-leads, who previously starred in Rajamouli’s “Yamadonga” and “Magadheera,” respectively.

Set in and around Delhi in 1920, “RRR” pointedly lacks historical context so that Rajamouli and his team can transform a straight-forward rescue mission into a rallying cry for reunification and also cathartic violence. Bheem, the avenging “shepherd” of the Adivasian Gond tribe, visits Delhi to track down Malli ( Twinkle Sharma ), an innocent pre-teen who’s kidnapped from her Gondian mother by the cartoonishly evil British Governor Scott ( Ray Stevenson ) and his sadistic wife Cathy ( Alison Doody ).

Raju, a peerless Colonial police officer, befriends Bheem without realizing that they’re at cross purposes: Bheem wants to break into Scott’s fortress-like quarters to rescue Maali while Raju wants to catch the unknown “tribal” that Scott’s lackey Edward ( Edward Sonnenblick ) fears might be lurking about. Raju and Bheem immediately bond after they save an unrelated child from being crushed by a runaway train, as clear a sign as any of Rajamouli’s love for Cecil B. DeMille-style melodrama. (“Ben Hur” is an acknowledged influence for Rajamouli, as are the action/period dramas of fellow DeMille-ian Mel Gibson ).

It’s also fitting that “RRR” is Rajamouli’s big breakthrough since it’s inevitably about Bheem as an inspiring symbol of quasi-traditional, boundary-trampling patriotism. Rajamouli has gotten quite good at incorporating potentially alienating elements, like his cheap-seats love of grisly violence and brash sloganeering, into his propulsive, inventive, and visually assured fight scenes and dance numbers.

Rajamouli has also already perfected the way he works with and uses his actors as part of his shock-and-awe style of melodrama. Rama Rao is ideally cast as the naively sweet-natured Bheem, whose messianic qualities are also effectively high-lit in a handful of rousing set pieces, like when a bare-chested Bheem wrestles a tiger into submission. Rama Rao’s performance isn’t the main thing, but it is the emblematic inspiration that, along with a “Passion of the Christ”-worthy scourging, understandably leads an assembly of Indian nationals to attack Scott and his bloodthirsty hambone wife in a later scene.

Likewise, Charan’s steely-eyed performance in “RRR” is limited, but strong enough to be credibly superhuman. Rajamouli knows exactly how to capture his best sides, as in an astounding opening action scene where Raju descends into a rioting mob just to subdue and apprehend one particular dissident. Rao and Charan’s bro-mantic chemistry and syncopated physicality have already made a viral success of the movie’s splashy “Naatu Naatu” musical number, but that scene’s infectiously joyful presentation is supra-human by design.

The spirit of the individual matters more than any single person in Rajamouli’s movies and “RRR” is a perfect expression of that notion. It’s also a decent reflection of Rajamouli’s fame, which Film Companion South ’s Sagar Tetali keenly suggests is “the triumph of directorial ambition over the actor-star—the triumph of a brand of storytelling over the South Indian star image.”

With “RRR,” Rajamouli repeats his preference for one nation under populist ubermenschen. Both Bheem and Raju are extraordinary men because they are, at heart, aspirational expressions of the people’s will. Their lives, their loved ones, and their relationships are all of secondary importance—check out Bollywood star Ajay Devgn ’s explosive cameo!—so it makes sense that the cast’s images and performances are also blown up to James Cameron-sized proportions.

Like Cameron, Rajamouli has earned a reputation for pushing the limits of industrialized pop cinema. In that sense, “RRR” feels simultaneously personal and gargantuan in scope. Film Comment ’s R. Emmet Sweeney is right to caution viewers regarding the towering streak of “Hindu-centric” Nationalism and characterizations at the heart of Rajamouli’s “Pan-Indian address.” Sweeney is also right to hail Rajamouli’s dazzling “technical innovation.” It’s not every day that a new Indian movie—which are typically not advertised to Western viewers beyond indigenous language speakers, and therefore largely ignored by Western outlets—is presented as an event to American theatergoers. Attend or miss out.

Available in theaters tonight, June 1st, and also streaming on Netflix.

What's Behind

Movie Mozart Rajamouli's RRR has been the cynosure of all eyes as it happens to be his first after the sensation he created with Baahubali. Expectations are high as Baahubali elevated the standard of Indian cinema at the international level. Rajamouli turned RRR in a more extravagant manner, turned it into a multi starrer with Young Tiger NTR and Mega Power Star Ram Charan, and roped in Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn for powerful roles along with Irish stars Olivia Morris, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson. Versatile Kollywood star Samuthirakhani and beautiful Shriya Sharan complete the RRR cast. The film after getting delayed by the covid pandemic was finally released in a massive manner on March 25, 2022. Let us see what Rajamouli's RRR world got in store for movie lovers.

Story Review

Akthar (NTR) goes in search of a tribal girl in Adilabad taken forcibly by the Britishers. He lands in Delhi but is unable to find safe passage into the British palace. He comes into contact with Ramraj (Ramraj), a police officer who is out to capture a rebel Bheem. To find out whether Akthar and Ramraj are successful in their mission and what is their connection with Jennifer (Olivia Morris), Seetha (Alia Bhatt), Vijay Ramraju (Ajay Devgn), Sarojini (Shriya Sharan), enjoy RRR on the silver screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

NTR thrilled all with his intense action sequences. He showed powerful emotions connecting chords with everyone. He elevated the scenes with his fiery screen presence.

Ram Charan looked royal and macho in the role of Ramraju. He performed his role with a lot of dedication, commitment, and intent. The scenes featuring NTR and Ram Charan turned out to be the highlights of the film. The way Rajamouli elevated their friendship, misunderstanding thrilled all movie lovers. NTR and Ram Charan's introductions, their combo scenes be it stunts or dance movements created wonders on the screen.

Alia Bhatt made her presence felt in a graceful manner. She looked beautiful in traditional attire and emoted well in important scenes showcasing her talent. Olivia Morris got a good role and she looked gorgeous and expressed well in all her scenes Ajay Devgn performed well in the action-packed role. Shriya is ok in the role of Ajay Devgn's wife. Rahul Ramakrishna played an important role. Samuthirakhani did his job as the subordinate of Ram Charan.

Rajamouli and his father Vijayendra Prasad came with a story loaded with full of emotions and high on action. Both of them worked relentlessly to do full justice to the stardom of both Ram Charan and NTR. They came with a script to elevate the heroism of Ram Charan and NTR with the action sequences. Rajamouli starts the story narration in a slow and simple manner with the scene related to the tribal girl and then set the tone for the power-packed introduction of both Ram Charan and NTR. The way Rajamouli powered the heroism of Ram Charan and NTR in the introduction is unimaginable.

Rajamouli chose a few sequences to elevate the heroics of Ram Charan and a few scenes to elevate the heroism of NTR in his quest to do the balancing act. More than the story, he gave importance to satisfying the fans of Ram Charan and NTR. Following the slow start, the introduction of NTR and Ram Charan then paves the way for a few romantic scenes between NTR and Olivia Morris helped by Ram Charan. Few twists and turns lead to the intense interval bang ending the high octane rather fast-paced first half. But second-half pace dips with little drags and the flash-back episode featuring Ajay Devgn and Shriya though important fail to increase the intensity. However, the emotional and action scenes featuring Ram Charan and NTR keep the viewers glued to the screens. Alia Bhatt steps in with her emotional performance and the powerful climax increases the madness. Overall Rajamouli came with a different story, screenplay, and direction.

Though he emerged successful, he failed to take the emotions to another level as he did in Baahubali. One gets a feeling that RRR missed the so-called 'X' factor to take the mania to another world. Keeravani's music is fine. The song Naatu Naatu is choreographed in a sensational manner and well shot. Dosti song is filmed in a beautiful manner highlighting the value of friendship. Other songs are situational and Ethara Jenda's song appears after the climax is filmed in a beautiful manner elevating the patriotic feel. The cinematography of Senthil Kumar is top class. He beatified the film showing the pre-Independence British era in a realistic manner and captured the stunt sequences in an attractive way. Sreekar Prasad's editing could have been better as there are few drags in the film. Dialogues are powerful, emotional, and heart-touching. Production values are grand.

Rating Analysis

Rajamouli with his RRR set a new trend of multi starrer in Tollywood. He showed that one can make films having top stars without any romantic tracks between the heroines. As revealed RRR came with a simple story but turned it into an action-packed multi starrer having intense scenes for both the stars. Rajamouli's screenplay and direction are fine and intact but it missed the Midas touch of Baahubali. Considering all these elements, CJ goes with a 3.0 rating for RRR.

RRR MOVIE REVIEW

RRR (aka) RRR Movie review

RRR is a period drama film directed by SS Rajamouli, and written by Vijayendra Prasad. The film has Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles while Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, and others play crucial supporting roles. The film is bankrolled by DVV Danayya under the banner DVV Entertainment. The music is composed by MM Keeravani, and the cinematography is handled by KK Senthil Kumar.

A tribal girl is separated forcefully from her tribe by the British. Komaram Bheem (Jr. NTR) is their only savior and he sets out on a mission to rescue her. On the other hand, the British Government is on a look out for Bheem, and appoints Rama Raju (Ram Charan) to get him dead or alive. The film broadly deals with the changing nature of the relationship between Rama and Bheem, and how they fight against the British for Indian independence.

One of the things director SS Rajamouli is known for, is the innovative nature with which he conceives most of the scenes. In the first part of Baahubali, the war sequence and how Prabhas lights up the roofs of the tents and uses it to control the Kalakeya Army. The entire film RRR contains many of such 'Rajamouli innovations'. But the biggest feat he has pulled off here is that despite placing almost every high point in the trailer, he's managed to give the fans more than what they expected.

There is a solid emotional motive for both Bheem and Rama and their flashbacks are written neatly with a lot of clarity. The combined vision of both Rajamouli and writer Vijayendra Prasad has translated beautifully on screen. The story is adapted from the life of Komaram Bheem, who fought for Indian independence and Tribal rights, but Vijayendra Prasad offers his own unique perspective to it by developing a fictional backstory.

Jr. NTR plays the role of Bheem and he is a beast when it comes to screen presence. He is equally and ably supported by Ram Charan, and both of them shoulder the entire film. Even if the plot/screenplay was filled with minor engagement issues, the energy these two bring to the table has kept the film engaging and entertaining. But when the writing is also brilliant, they take it to an unparalleled high.

Both these actors are supported by a strong ensemble of actors which include Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani and Alia Bhatt. There are a lot of moments inspired by Ramayana. For instance, When the tribal girl is in captive, Bheem Komaram sends her a bangle that reminds us the part in Ramayana where Hanuman gives Sita a ring to tell her that Rama is coming to save her. These moments make the narrative more interesting.

Another positive about the film is the production design by Sabu Cyril that makes the film visually appealing. The house of Bheem's love interest, which looks huge and grand reminds us of the beauty of the palaces of Mahishmathi in Bahubali. The same quality is seen here as well. The cinematographer Senthil Kumar does a fantastic job of capturing these sets well. MM Keeravani's background score adds depth to a lot of scenes and hypes up each and every mass moment, thereby giving us a product that's several notches higher than what it should have been. The songs don't disturb the screenplay much, with Naatu Naatu and Etthara Janda being earworms. The culmination of these technicalities and Rajamouli's vision is what makes RRR what it is.

Overall, RRR is a great addition to Rajamouli's filmography and it is delightful to see a director stand his ground and a make a film without any compromises despite having two star heroes up front. He also doesn't fail to satisfy the fans of both, taking a masterclass once more, on how to direct a mass commercial film with such astounding quality in all departments.

RRR

“Delirious” is the word to describe S.S. Rajamouli’s Indian action-adventure film that has become a worldwide phenomenon both in theaters and on Netflix since its summer release.

Although the central characters are based on real-life historical figures, RRR (the title stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt”) is strictly fictional, as one of the most extensive opening disclaimers ever seen onscreen takes pain to emphasize. (We’re also assured that all of the animals seen in the film, and there are plenty, are strictly CGI. Which is definitely a good thing for them.)

We’re introduced to the lead characters in two bravura action sequences before the opening credits, which don’t appear until some 40 minutes into the film. Ramo Rao Jr. plays Bheem, a burly member of the Gond tribe who attempts to trap a wolf only to come into hand-to-paw combat with a rampaging tiger, whom he manages to subdue through a combination of cunning and superhuman strength. Charan plays Raju, a seemingly superhuman Indian member of the British police who, when first seen, dives into a raging mob of what seems like thousands of rioting Indians to subdue a criminal and somehow manages to fight all of them off successfully.

When a little girl from his tribe is abducted by an evil British governor (Ray Stevenson, leaning heavily into his cartoonish role) who regards Indians as “brown rubbish,” and his equally wicked wife (Alison Doody, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ), Bheem embarks for Delhi on a rescue mission. There he encounters Raju in an action-movie version of a “meet cute,” the pair making their acquaintance via a daring joint rescue of a boy from a burning river in a sequence that rivals anything James Cameron or Steven Spielberg has ever devised.

And, of course, there are musical numbers, including the instant classic “Naatu Naatu,” in which Raju and Bheem engage in a frenetically athletic dance-off with rhythm-challenged Brits that would have made MGM’s Arthur Freed proud. (I watched the film on Netflix, and can only imagine the hysteria the scene must have induced in theaters.)

Director Rajamouli, who in just seven years is already responsible for three of India’s highest-grossing films of all time, displays his obvious love of popular cinema in every wildly colorful, overstuffed frame. No matter that the CGI or aerial wire work is sometimes all too obvious, or that the frequent use of slow-motion borders on parody. It’s all presented in such visually dazzling fashion that your eyes are fully satisfied before your brain can make any objections.

And the two endlessly charismatic lead actors display such dynamic physicality in their hyper-muscular performances that they fairly burst from the screen. Their characters provide the most evocative screen bromance since Butch and Sundance.

RRR Review: True Cinematic Experience with Exhilarating performances

There's a vibe in the air! RRR, SS Rajamouli's long-awaited magnum opus that has sparked widespread excitement from its start, is currently in theatres. The epic period drama released on Friday. The film stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR, two of Tollywood's top actors. RRR is Rajamouli's fourth collaboration with Tarak, following Student No. 1 (2001), Simhadri (2003), and Yamadonga (2007), and his second with Charan, after their 2009 film Magadheera.

The latest film is supported by DVV Danayya under DVV Entertainments and is available in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam. RRR also has guest appearances by Bollywood celebrities Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn.

Story: Set during the rule of the British Empire. The paths they have chosen to achieve their goals and their transformation as complete leaders during the process form the full story. One is attempting to bring their tribe's kid abducted by British back into flock, while the other is attempting to fulfil his promise to his dead father and bring freedom to our country.

Analysis: Script and Direction Director SS Rajamouli and writer Vijayendra Prasad have hit a home run with RRR. The picture contains all of the components essential for a period drama, including emotions, visuals, action, romance (to an extent), and, most significantly, heroism. Bringing two Tollywood superstars on board and balancing their roles, dialogues, and performances is a difficult task. The script is simple and crafted in such a way that it captures the essence of the era while allowing the leading guys to shine in their roles. The bromance of the two is the highlight of the entertainer. Rajamouli has knocked it out of the park with his new movie, as his direction is just outstanding. The female characters (Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, and Shriya Saran) are not mere sidekicks in this film, as they are in every other Rajamouli film. There are some sluggish moments, particularly in the first half, but the director and writer make up for it by coming back strong each time.

Performances NTR wowed everyone with his intense action sequences. He displayed strong emotions, striking a connection with everyone. With his ferocious screen presence, he enhanced the scenes.

In the role of Ramraju, Ram Charan appeared royal and macho. He played his part with passion, dedication, and commitment. The moments starring NTR and Ram Charan turned out to be the film's highlights. All moviegoers were enthralled by Rajamouli's treatment of their friendship and misunderstanding. The introductions of NTR and Ram Charan, as well as their combo scenes, whether stunts or dancing movements, worked brilliantly on the screen.

Alia Bhatt as Sita (Ram Charan's love interest) fits in well with the story, but a little extra screen time wouldn't have hurt. Ajay Devgn has played his part perfectly, and his persona of a fierce freedom fighter is too good to miss.

Technical Department: Rajamouli's father, Vijayendra Prasad, has penned a wonderful storyline for RRR. On the film, the relationship between the characters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju is delightful to watch. The graphics and cinematography are superb. Senthil Kumar, the cameraman, and Sabu Cyril, the art director, have done a wonderful job of capturing and providing electrifying moments. It's wonderful how they recreated 1920s Delhi and presented it so nicely. The intermission bang and climax action scenes are RRR's plus points, revealing Rajamouli's international standards of making with exciting action episodes. Rajamouli gets the emotions just right. All of the songs are excellent. The audience's hearts were captured by Janani's song. The friendship song Dosti and the dance number Naatu Naatu are great on screen. MM Keeravani’ BGM is appealing and elevating scenes.

Rajamouli's RRR established a new multi-starrer trend in Tollywood. He demonstrated that films with top stars can be made without love plotlines between the heroines. As previously said, RRR began with a simple premise but evolved into an action-packed multi-starrer featuring explosive scenes for both leads. The storyline and direction by Rajamouli are simply outstanding.

Verdict RRR has the right amount of freshness and potency. This emotionally packed picture is intended for individuals who appreciate cinema as a visual medium. The eye-catching visuals, riveting stunts, electrifying energy, pure brilliance of the plot, sterling performances, and, of course, the two eye candies- Ram Charan and Jr NTR- make the period drama a spectacular one, moulded into perfect shape by SS Rajamouli.

RRR Movie Review: A Celebration Of Outrageous Ideas That Mostly Works

RRR Movie Review: A Celebration Of Outrageous Ideas That Mostly Works

Cast: Junior NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt

Director: S.S. Rajamouli

A group of men belonging to the Gond tribe in Adilabad are planning to attack the palace of a British general in Delhi. On the British side, there are police officers, guns, ammunition, and a hundred other items that could count as weapons.

And on the side of the men of the tribes led by Komaram Bheem (NTR Jr) all they have is a truck and a few scrawny men who believe in Bheem. They are also far from home and relatively cornered alone in an unfamiliar part of the world. You begin to wonder how they will attack without getting caught. Surely Bheem is not so naïve that he can't figure out he is going to get caught if he charges at the palace. Or is Rajamouli going to cater to fans and probably have NTR Jr bulldoze his way through the crowd?

And then the film reveals Bheem's real plan with the massiest of mass entries of NTR Jr. It's outrageous. It's stunning. It's hair raising. It's full of conviction and frankly makes you think what else could these men have done but this. And this is not some surprise or convenient twist of the screenplay for the sake of a goosebumps moment for NTR Jr and his fans. Rajamouli has planted clues and hints so that this pre-interval sequence becomes a stunning set piece for Bheem and his men. And because they are such underdogs at this point you can't help but cheer for them and applaud the audacity of the idea.

It's outrageous but it's fun.

RRR starring Ram Charan and NTR Jr is a series of such equally outrageous ideas from the mind of Rajamouli. Take the premise and story. There are a couple of years of history that are missing on Telugu revolutionaries Alluri Sitaramaraju and Komaram Bheem.

And Rajamouli simply asks what if they met? What if he narrated the story of how they impacted each other? What if he told the story his way? This historical fan fiction idea itself sounds so out there and implausible that Rajamouli is not just happy if they shared a cup of tea at a roadside stall. He wants them to fight together, against each other, atop each other, engage in a dance battle with Britishers, and ultimately save each other and give each other the purpose that defined their later lives.

On top of the historical baggage of the two characters is the meta baggage of his leading men. Rajamouli wants to bring together two stars belonging to the two biggest families in the Telugu film industry which seems a mean feat considering that the families have had been political rivals, film rivals, and even their fans have been rivals leading to violence.

Additionally, Rajamouli is not content just bringing two stars to be the two versions of the same as multi-starrer films do when they want to play safe and make sure neither leading actor is shortchanged. He wants them to have different emotional arcs, he wants them to be two full characters rather than two stars looking for equal footing on screen.

He also does not want to play it safe and simple as seen in other multi-starrer films such as Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu or Gopala Gopala or Deva Das. These films either eliminated any elements of masala or had a clear hierarchy of stars.

To use a Baahubali-an metaphor Rajamouli wants to take the bull of masala films by its horns and make a proper multi-starrer that results in a great theatrical experience.

And on paper, all of RRR's ideas work and they mostly translate on screen.

Let's look at what works first.

Rajamouli is interested in showing dualities through his films and maybe for the first time you see such literal interpretations of these dualities. Ram Charan and NTR Jr. Fire and Water. Patriotism and Personal love. Orange and Blue. Wild and Civilised. Utilitarian and Deontological. Maybe even Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

I was worried before watching the film that these would be ornamental and shallow ideas which might not have any emotional depth. But I was wrong on this one. You just need one example to understand why Rajamouli has covered his emotional bases.

There's a stretch in the second half and I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll be cryptic about it. A character is going through immense pain and this character is singing a song to console themselves. On the surface, it's about this character healing and this character spreading the message of patriotism through their song to others.

But the camera lingers on the one inflicting the pain. And the way their world and ideology begin to crumble. The character inflicting the pain has always assumed that weapons mean guns. And for the first time, this character sees that a weapon need not be a gun. It could be anything. Fists, legs, and even a song. And the camera shows fists punching the others inflicting pain, legs stepping on barbed wire to break fences, and then it lingers on to the character experiencing change.

This is the film's best emotional sequence and probably the most important turning point within the larger journey of the film.

And it is here that you get why Rajamouli is so obsessed with dualities and the story that he chose to tell. This scene tells you why the potential intertwining histories of two of the most celebrated figures in Telugu culture is so interesting to Rajamouli. It isn't just about bringing two big stars to act in a film or the potential box office numbers or even the chance to execute some outlandish and some downright silly ideas.

It is also here that MM Keeravani, the music director, is in supreme form and you wonder how someone manages to make you think the music is mediocre before the release of a film and after viewing it you can't help but hum his songs. Komaram Bheemudo sung by Kaala Bhairava haunts you even after you leave the hall.

Similarly, Rajamouli's story is not fully convincing as to how these Ramaraju and Bheem become such good friends suddenly. If the film was on mute it would have felt rushed but Keeravani and editor Sreekar Prasad save the screenplay with the way the song Dosti is pieced together audio-visually. Of course, NTR Jr and Ram Charan are great but it needed something more and the music director and editor land the bond between the principal protagonists. Other songs like Naatu Naatu and the soft hymns that are used to elevate a mass scene are prime Keeravani territory and there are barely any blunders he makes in those.

It's also to Rajamouli's credit that he's extracted such fine performances from all his actors. It takes a special kind of film where you walk out thinking Alia Bhatt might have been the weakest link and that's not her fault because it has more to do with dubbing and her character length and the various times the screenplay uses her character Seeta as a crutch. I'll get to that later.

Everyone has always known that NTR Jr is a great actor but somehow one could never name one film where he acted well throughout. There were scenes and stretches where he exhibited the full range of his acting prowess but there is no one film where it felt like his full potential was used. And finally, that film has come. In terms of histrionics which he always puts in fifth gear has finally mellowed in the hands of Rajamouli and he has toned it down by using NTR Jr's eyes more than his voice. There's a scene where he hears the voice of someone he's been looking for, for the first time in ages and his face lights up but it also panics because of the consequences of what it might mean for him and the other character if they recognize each other. He captures innocence and naïveté and the feeling of being wronged without resorting to melodrama like he usually does.

Similarly, Ram Charan who had dispelled myths about his acting capabilities with Rangasthalam, gets a stoic character with a tragic past. There's a certain woodenness and sullenness to his Ramaraju. But for the first time the woodenness of his face works because of his acting and not because he can't. Early on in the film, he charges at a wrongdoer who broke a law. He's getting beaten up by a mob. And he's beating them up too. But there is this look of masochistic glee where the harder he gets hit the more determined he seems. And the pain passes onto the lawbreaker who thinks he's free. Unlike Bheem, Ramaraju has a more complex and layered character which is not an easy fan favourite. He does questionable things, his emotions are constantly in check, and his purpose is mysterious and broad. It is to Ram Charan's credit that he still manages to retain the audience's sympathy and empathy against an NTR Jr who is not only in sublime form but also has the more crowd-pleasing character.

But in this quest for a duality that isn't just plainly about giving each actor even character graphs and massy moments, Rajamouli seems to have taken lightly the one screenwriting principle that he has maintained throughout his career i.e. creating villains who seem more powerful than the hero(es).

But Ray Stevenson's General Scott and to an extent Alisson Dhody's Lady Scott are the weakest villains in Rajamouli's filmography. It's not just enough that they have an army of soldiers at their disposal or that they are racists and have no feelings about uprooting children from their homes. Those are clichés and you expect better and bigger from a filmmaker of Rajamouli's stature.

This film needed its Gabbar Singh or at least a version of Helmut Zemo from Avengers: Civil War. Because once Bheem achieves his goals and Ramaraju goes through what he must, the third act of the film feels like an extension only to have some fan-pleasing set pieces. The set pieces are whistle-worthy for sure but they don't carry the same emotional weight as the earlier portions of the films did.

All of this is made apparent by two screenplay choices that Rajmouli is forced to make. The first is that all of Seeta's entries occur where convenient and depend on us believing in coincidences that bend the rules of Rajamouli's universe. We cut to one of her scenes in the first half to make us understand the motives of Ramaraju but it doesn't feel organic. Similarly, when she does enter in the third act it feels too convenient. But again, the premise of this sequence is great. It's an inversion of Hanuman going to save Sita and Rajamouli never makes a poor allusion to mythology. But he has created a poor villain which also leads him towards his second questionable screenplay choice.

This involves the flashback of Ramaraju. Given where it is currently it feels like the journey expected of an audience is to go from "Why is he behaving like a villain?" to "Oh! That's why he was like that". Wouldn't it have been better to keep it upfront so the conflict between Ram and Bheem feels more like a tragedy that the audience cannot stop? But then again if Rajamouli does that then that will cause a bloated first half which leaves barely any drama for the second.

I understand it's hard to create a more macho villain than the combination of Ramcharan and NTR Jr playing Ramaraju and Bheem but Lady Scott with all her venom seemed a more promising villain than General Scott. A little more bravery on this front would have made for a strong third act and not having the audience feel like the film ended abruptly.

But you never walk out of the theatre feeling like you've been shortchanged for the cash you paid. The questions that linger are more in the zone of what could have been an epic story is now reduced to an epic theatrical experience. And there is nothing wrong with that either, but because of the bar Rajamouli has set for himself you want to discuss and dissect each story and you want it to linger in your mind years later. Now what lingers is how you felt when watching the outrageous set pieces.

And they were goosebumps raising, whiste-worthy, crazy, insane. Did I say outrageous?

RRR Review – Rajamouli on Rampage !

RRR movie review

RRR movie review

SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR is gearing up for its biggest ever release in over 10,000 screens across the globe in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada languages. The film has NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Olivia Morris, Shriya Saran and Samuthirakani in the lead roles. This is SS Rajamouli’s next immediate release after Baahubali: The Conclusion that released five years ago. Here is our review :

Set in the 1920 period, RRR film is a fictional story of two men who, driven by their beliefs for family and the nation, rise and revolt against the oppressive British government. Rama Raju (Charan) is employed with the British police while Akthar alias Bheem (NTR) is in search of a child taken away from his family. Destiny brings these two together in friendship – a powerful bond challenged by their purposes. The rest of the movie unveils the conflict and the path forward in their lives.

RRR is a commercial potboiler with Rajamouli’s signature high performance elements spaced at regular intervals. He sets up simple causes for his protagonists Ram, Bheem and ties their journey together. The first half is very well paced as the audience is treated to the much talked about Ram Charan introduction lathi charge scene, followed by an excellent introduction of NTR in the jungle. Their friendship is well established with the Dosthi song, with typical banter of friends as they continue to progress in their purposes. Soon we arrive at the ‘ Naatu Naatu’ song , another great score. The interval block is elevated in typical Rajamouli style. The NTR led tribal attack fight gives you the goosebumps – has the audience glued to their seats in anticipation. The chemistry between NTR and Charan is an excellent value add to the movie. Ajay Devgn & Alia don’t have much to do in the first half, however we see them for a bit in the second half.

The second half gets off the ground with an OK flashback giving insight into Rama Raju’s past. NTR’s Komaram Bheemudo song is very emotional, such excellence !! Seeta (Alia Bhatt) plays a pivot role in reuniting the two friends. From here movie sets into turbo mode racing towards climax with Bheem rescuing Rama Raju, Raghavam song, Charan’s powerful Alluri Sitarama Raju’s getup. This more than makes up for initial lag with the flashback episodes. The movie ends in a positive note with a highly charged climax.

A simple rescue of a tribal girl is masterfully tied to a fight for freedom and respect on the bonds of a great friendship.

Performances:

NTR and Charan deliver beyond expectations. Their dance in ‘ Naatu’ song is unparalleled. Rajamouli has once proved himself the master director who knows his heroes strengths and how to mold them into a highly emotional saga. Ajay Devgn, Shriya and Alia Bhatt roles are minimal and not author backed. The elements missing here are the strong villain and other supporting characters which is usually a staple in Rajamouli movies. In RRR, the audience will not see anything except Ram and Bheem – there simply is no more room for anyone else.

Music and background score by M.M. Keeravani elevates the scenes as usual. The director’s imagination for VFX work is excellent, majority of the shots output came out good though, few graphic shots could have been better. The production work is world class, sets look good. The miniature artwork in place for the train episode in first half came out well. Stunts by King Solomon are a very good effort. The mob fights came out well. Cinematography by Senthil is a great asset to the film.

Positives :

  • Rajamouli signature highly charged elements spaced throughout the film
  • NTR and Charan’s spectacular performance
  • Emotions, Action Episodes, Art Work, Cinematography etc. technical brilliance is major asset
  • Keeravani songs and background score
  • Patchy CG work in few scenes
  • Slight lag in second half

RRR’s first half is fantastic, second half is a bit routine albeit with a good climax. Rajamouli has unleashed the potential of the both the heroes to maximum extent with regards to performance. All the songs are good and blend well with the context. NTR and Charan coverup the flipsides of the film with their powerful and yet emotional performances. RRR has all ingredients to become yet another Rajamouli mark money spinner at the Box-office.

RRR from Baahubali director S. S. Rajamouli is an epic action film. Set in the 1920's, the film tells the story of two powerful people who fight against the British Empire in their own way.

Rajamouli starts the film by establishing his two protagonists with introduction sequences. Ram Charan is Alluri Sitarama Raju, a cop so powerful that he could stomp past scores of men to catch one of them. They are not some ordinary men but are Sikh people, who are known for their strength. Raju's stunt is so brave that it leaves a big impression on his British commander. It is an unbelievable set piece on paper, but star Ram Charan and director Rajamouli make it somewhat believable. It is not a hero introduction scene as Raju is merely following the orders of a British commander to oppress the Indians. His act is not heroic in the filmy sense of the word.

In the other sequence, Jr NTR uses himself as bait for a hyena, but he ends up trapping a tiger instead. It is the same tiger we see in the trailer. We wonder whether the tiger is for use as food or as a weapon. Later, we realize that Jr NTR plays a man who grew up in the forest and who leads a rebel army against the Brits.

At some point, we realize that the protagonists will meet. There is a bit of Manmohan Desai-ness about the meeting point of the two characters as they call themselves brothers instantly. Only, Rajamouli's gigantic set-pieces work as the things that separate the characters with a brotherly bond here, versus coincidences, space and time in a Desai film.

RRR is a film where the characters spend most of the time gliding in the air like Hindi film stars in motion posters. Nevertheless, Rajamouli's filmmaking craft is so good that much of the action is enjoyable despite being a tad over the top. In one scene, Jr NTR comes flying from the back of a truck with a group of wild animals, including the hyena and tiger from the start of the film. It is glorious to watch in a 3D theater. Even amid the spectacular action, Rajamouli shows little details like the tiger attacking the Jr NTR character. Remember, he has trapped the tiger but has not tamed it at the start of the film.

In a film like RRR, things like story and script are always in service to the spectacle it delivers. Now as much as I appreciate and enjoyed the spectacle in RRR, I did not quite like the storytelling here. With Rajamouli since Baahubali: The Beginning, it has been like the bigger the spectacle and the bigger the budget, the less interesting the film from a storytelling point of view. People view Rajamouli as a big-budget director, but his best work is the more intimate Eega. The 2012 film may be bizarre, but Rajamouli's storytelling has such conviction that it still boggles the mind. RRR has that midas touch of storyteller Rajamouli only to some extent.

RRR has quite an old-fashioned story of people with different ideologies about different pathways to independence. The film is full of broad strokes and lacks depth in emotions. The Jr NTR character appears more of a muscular personality than a freedom fighter. On the other hand, there is at least a terrific backstory for the Ram Charan character, which keeps the mostly airborne film grounded for a while. A spectacular action film becomes more than just a thing of beauty when a strong story aspect binds to its action. There are only some bravura sequences in the film with action that combines itself with pieces of clever storytelling.

Nevertheless, RRR is quite a few notches ahead of your standard mass entertainer. After all, it is a masala film. It has stunning action and wonderful performances from its two leads. Ajay Devgan is also excellent in a cameo role here. The British characters may be one-note bad guys as in most period films about India's independence, but the acting for those roles is not half as bad. The Malayalam dubbing leaves a lot to be desired, but I found the 3D experience worthwhile.

'RRR' Movie Review: Only Style, No Substance

'RRR' Movie Review: Only Style, No Substance

Movie: RRR Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: DVV Entertainment Cast: NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson, and others. Story: Vijayendra Prasad Dialogues: Sai Madhav Burra Music: MM Keeravani Cinematography: KK Senthil Kumar Production designer: Sabu Cyril Editor: Sreekar Prasad Producer: DVV Danayya Screenplay and Directed by: SS Rajamouli  Release Date: March 25, 2022

“RRR”, top director Rajamouli’s latest, after the record-breaking ‘Baahubali 2’, featuring Tollywood's two biggest superstars NTR and Ram Charan, finally hit the theaters today.

The much-anticipated biggie is here. Read on…

Story: The story is set in 1920s in Delhi. When Malli, a young girl from a village is taken by British officers, Akthar (NTR) heads to Delhi to bring her back.

On the other hand, Ramaraju (Ram Charan) works as a police officer under the British, and he promises his bosses that he would nab Akhtar dead or alive. Akhtar and Ram accidentally meet and develop friendship.

When Ram finally understands that Akhtar is none other than Bheem, he arrests him. Why is Ramaraju working for the British? What is his real motive? Will Bheem free the young girl?

Artistes’ Performances: The film is a multi-starrer, and both the lead actors have done a fine job within the limitations of their character sketches.

NTR, who is known as one of the best performers in Tollywood, has played Komaram Bheem in his usual manner in the first half of the film.

A song and a couple of scenes give him a chance to exhibit his performance skills. But other than that, he gets a raw deal, purely because his character arc is weak, and written unevenly.

Ram Charan’s Ramaraju role has many layers. He is shown as a man burning with fire and inner turmoil. Ram Charan’s role steals the show. In the entire second half, Ram Charan gets elevated. The getup of Alluri Sita Ramaraju in the final fight is a treat to his fans. Charan’s role is better written and he gets scenes that bring him under the spotlight.

Alia Bhatt gets no scope. She is there for a few moments like a guest artiste. Ajay Devgn owns the flashback sequence and he's in with his screen presence.

Olivia Morris plays a typical British Mem Sahib role. Alison Doody and Ray Stevenson appear in laughable roles.

Technical Excellence: Rajamouli’s trusted director of photography Senthil Kumar captures the frames in a larger-than-life manner and brings all his skills to film the frenetic action sequences.

The production design is filled with opulence. Every bit of the film shows that crores of money have been spent.

Dialogue writing is poor. Not even a single line is worth mentioning.

MM Keeravani’s music adds effectively in couple of sequences. Among the songs, “Naatu Naatu” and “Komaram Bheemudo” have worked out well.

Highlights: NTR and Ram Charan Lavish making

Drawback: Not rousing emotions Slack in the second half Lack of romantic scenes Feel of rushed editing

Analysis The basic premise of two unconnected freedom warriors of our land coming together and developing a bond, and getting inspired by each other is an idea adopted here. After the record-breaking “Baahubali”, Rajamouli with the help of his father, writer Vijayendra Prasad has cracked this idea.

In reality, Komaram Bheem (a revolutionary leader from Gond tribes in Adilabad in Telangana) and Alluri Sita Ramaraju (a popular freedom warrior from the Manyam region in Andhra Pradesh) have never met. But there are some missing pages in their history, which is the basis for Rajamouli’s imagination: What did they do or where did they go in the years when there was no recorded history about their whereabouts?

Set in the 1920s, the story of ‘RRR’ depicts the friendship and bonding between Komaram Bheem played by NTR, and Alluri Sita Ramaraju by Ram Charan. The drama sets off with a tribal girl and focuses on elements of fiRe (Ram Charan) and wateR (NTR), and their meeting.

While the film takes a while to connect, it picks up after the “Dosti” song and reaches to a point before the interval.

Not to spoil the experience, let’s keep it this way: NTR leads an attack in which the idea itself is superb, and he executes in a bad way. The “Naatu Naatu” song is a treat to fans and for the general audiences alike.

The reason why Ramaraju works for the British and his backstory is revealed immediately after the interval. Ajay Devgn and Alia get their moments in the second half. The momentum goes down in these portions and some sequences look artificial and cinematic.

The film ends with a big fight sequence, the climax fight lasts more than 20 minutes.

The problem with the film is that Rajamouli takes the names of the real-life freedom warriors and weaves his fictional tale. Not a single scene is relevant to history. Plus, Bheem’s aim of saving a girl who was taken by the British officers after being impressed with her tattoo-making skills looks very weak.

Why would all British officers fight against Bheem just for a girl who makes tattoos? How would Nizam kings inform the British about Bheem’s heroics, as he was not revolted against them at the period the movie is set in.

In all Rajamouli’s films, there’s a strong opponent. But here, the villain role played by Ray Stevenson is weak. The British actors who played the roles mouthed their lines in English, which is irritating after a point. They should have put a disclaimer and made them speak in Telugu.

The other downer is NTR’s character losing importance in the second half.  You hardly see any presence of NTR in the second half except for the “Komaram Bheemudo” song. Even in the lengthy climax, NTR gets sidelined, and his aim of bringing the girl is lost in the melee. Many scenes give a feel of a rushed product.

The patriotic feel is also not felt.

If you have to compare with "Baahubali", "RRR", too, scores on action episodes, grandeur, star power, and strong performances. But "Baahubali" had superb romantic moments between the lead pair, glamorous songs, and a revenge formula to connect with. "RRR" has none of them.

Beneath the glitzy making and grandeur, one can easily spot loopholes, weak plot, and forced emotional core. It feels, this is not a Rajamouli kind of film.

Bottom line: ‘Hype’r Action
