What is a Clothing Line Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your clothing line as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Clothing Line

If you’re looking to start a clothing line or grow your existing clothing line business you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your clothing line in order to improve your chances of success. Your clothing brand business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Source of Funding for Clothing Line Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a clothing line are bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable. But they will want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.

The second most common form of funding for a clothing line is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan. Venture capitalists will generally not fund a clothing line.

How to write a business plan for a clothing line business.

Your business plan should include 10 sections as follows:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of clothing line business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a clothing line that you would like to grow, or are you operating multiple clothing lines.

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the apparel industry. Discuss the type of clothing line you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of clothing line you are operating.

Generally, you will describe your clothing line based on the 1) intended buyer (e.g., women’s, young men’s, etc.) and the type of clothing (jackets, shirts, dresses, etc.).

In addition to explaining the type of clothing line you operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include sales goals you’ve reached, new store openings, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the apparel business.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the apparel and clothing line industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends. For example, if there was a trend towards looser-fitting clothing, it would be helpful to ensure your plan calls for offering such products.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your clothing line business plan:

  • How big is the clothing line business (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your clothing line?

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your clothing brand business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: college students, sports enthusiasts, soccer moms, techies, teens, baby boomers, etc.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of clothing line you operate and vice versa.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other clothing line businesses targeting the same products and customers as you. Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from you that aren’t direct competitors. For example, an indirect competitor to a sweatpants manufacturer is a company that manufactures jeans as the two are substitute products.

With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other clothing line businesses with which you compete. For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What products do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. Looking at online reviews of your competitors can provide great insight here.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide superior clothing line products?
  • Will you provide clothing line products that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you make it easier or faster for customers to acquire your products?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a clothing line business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product: in the product section you should reiterate the type of clothing line that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering.

Price: Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the menu of apparel items you offer and their prices.

Place: Place refers to the location of your clothing line. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success particularly if you are targeting a specific geographic region.

Promotions: the final part of your clothing line marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to purchase your clothing. The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Operating a retail store and/or online store
  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to bloggers and websites
  • Partnerships with other companies
  • Radio or TV advertising
  • Event marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Pay Per Click advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your clothing line such as designing clothing, manufacturing, procuring supplies, managing inventory, etc.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to sell your 1,000th item, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new clothing line.

Management Team

To demonstrate your clothing line’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in the clothing line business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in clothing line businesses and/or successfully running retail and small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements. The graph below is an example of the financial projections for a clothing line business.

Projected Sales, Gross Profit & Net Income

Clothing Line Financial Projections

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you sell 100 items per day or 200? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Example 5 Year Annual Income Statement

Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your clothing line design shop, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100.000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Example 5 Year Annual Balance Sheet

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. For example, let’s say a retailer approached you with a massive $100,000 contract to design and manufacture apparel for them. And that doing so would cost you $50,000 to fulfill. Well, in most cases, you would have to pay that $50,000 now for supplies, employee salaries, etc. But let’s say the company didn’t pay you for 180 days. During that 180 day period, you could run out of money.

Example 5 Year Annual Cash Flow Statement

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a clothing line:

  • Design house and/or manufacturing facility build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment like sewing machines, etc.
  • Cost of supplies/inventory
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include some of your apparel designs.

Starting a Clothing Boutique Business Plan (PDF)

Clothing Boutique Business

A clothing boutique or simply a boutique is a shop that sells fashionable clothes, jewellery plus other related accessories and services. The clothing boutiques space is highly segmented or fragmented. There are two major types of clothing boutiques. One solely carries clothing items from a particular designer or brand. Then the other carries clothing items from various designers or brands. The latter is the most common in many parts of the world. Starting a clothing boutique business is very profitable. The clothing industry is made up of a very wide array of clothing items that cater for the different age groups. There’s also a broad spectrum of styles and designs when it comes to clothing. Taking either males or females separately you’ll realise that niching in the clothing industry is so diverse. Some big clothing outlets even focus solely on just baby clothes as an example. This all is to make you see that any mention of the clothing market being flooded is inaccurate. For example, there are few clothing boutiques that solely focus on or incorporate tailor-making of clothes. That can be a smart way to niche because that can make your clothing boutique exclusive. You can always carve out a niche for yourself if you take the right approaches. This article will outline how to start the clothing boutique business, and the clothing boutique business plan – PDF, Word and Excel.

Market Research

You must first of all identify your target market. Once you’ve done that thoroughly study it to find out its size, income levels, buying habits and clothing dynamics. Obtaining information on these areas will help you in noting characteristics you’ll capitalise on to make a resounding market entry. Market entry requires putting together a number of strategies to lure customers. Such strategies will most likely come from insights you’ll gather during your market research.

The other key study area is your prospective competition once you setup your business. Analyse their business approaches, marketing strategies, their value propositions, general market appeal and also their weaknesses. Take time to identify which clothing items they offer so that you have an idea of what or what not to sell. There are always endless possibilities with regards to how to package your brand and product portfolio in a unique way. All this is borne out of a well-executed market research exercise.

Make sure you have a comprehensive clothing boutique business plan

The failure to plan is the beginning of business failure. The clothing boutique business plan must be clear and succinct enough to give your potential partners, clients and investors an overview of what your objectives are. At the same time, it must be detailed enough to explain your business well. Your clothing store business plan should have financial statements which show that your clothing boutique business is viable and profitable.

Clothing Boutique Business Model

The applicable business model depends on the nature of your clothing boutique. Let us suppose it is a clothing boutique that carries clothing items from a sole brand or designer. There might be a working arrangement where you get a cut from every sale made. It could also be that you get the stock at discounted prices and have the leeway to set your own selling prices. If it is a generalized clothing boutique such arrangements might apply. However, the common scenario is that you source your stock and put your mark-ups. Obviously your mark-ups must comprehensively factor in all the related costs. The clothing boutique business is mostly niche-driven. Thus pricing is not usually an issue especially if you exclusively offer what clients are looking for. All the same you still have to price reasonably such that you do not push prospects away.

Location And Premises for a Clothing Boutique

Universal considerations such as a place that has high volumes of vehicle and human traffic apply here. In your choice of a spot, ensure that you factor in the size of the pool from which potential customers will come from. Be absolutely sure about the income levels of people in that pool. Clothing boutiques are best situated at shopping centres, in residential areas, malls, central business districts or strategic standalone locations. A clothing boutique must be clearly visible to anyone moving up and down in the vicinity.

Preferably its design must be open-plan with window displays of products in-store. The interior must usually have white walls and floors to accentuate the visibility of clothing items displayed in store. Another important thing to ensure is the availability of adequate and spacious parking space. The interior must also be sufficiently spacious to avoid congestion in-store. The cost of purchasing or leasing the premises should be included in the clothing store business plan.

Permits/Licenses, Insurance & Business Bank Account

Company or business registration and shop license.

The applicable laws regarding permits or licenses differ depending on the location of your clothing boutique business. Universally you must first of all register the business entity. Then you will have to apply for a clothing boutique shop license. This is the case in most places but there can be variations. It is advisable to engage your respective local authorities to seek clarity.

Insurance And Business Bank Account

These two aspects are for your own good. Insurance shields you against incidents that might dig into your pockets. Examples can be damage caused by fire or theft. Being insured will help you regain your footing with less financial pressure on you. Opening a business bank account helps separate your clothing boutique’s finances from your personal finances. That way you will have limited personal liability protection.

Competitive Analysis

A clothing boutique is niche-driven yes, but that does not mean competition will not matter. In fact, niche markets can have cutthroat competition. That is why you need to check out who your competition is. Be it direct or indirect competitors; check them out both. No clothing boutique or clothing outlets in general ever carries the whole spectrum. You will always find areas of need they are not catering to. Differentiators in the clothing boutique business can be cheaper prices and a broader range. When purchasing clothes, people are always looking to bargain. Draw prospects to your clothing boutique by capitalizing on your competitors’ shortcomings.

Products for a Clothing Store Business

The range of clothing items is quite broad and diverse. This means the types of clothing items you can sell will depend on how and which niche you intend to cater for. Niching is best done by studying about players already in their industry i.e. the products that they have on offer, their pricing regimes and their marketing approaches. This will ultimately inform your decision on what to sell in your boutique. The broad categories of clothing items that can be sold are kids’ wear, men’s wear, women’s wear, footwear and associated accessories.

Products can be sourced locally or imported or tailor-made. All the categories mentioned can also branch off into many other specific areas of focus e.g. swim wear. You must also stay on top of emerging trends in the clothing industry so that you stay up-to-date. The costs of purchasing the clothing boutique products should be included in your clothing boutique business plan.

Clothing Store Business Products

Inventory Management

Inventory management in the clothing boutique business requires proper planning. In most cases inventory gets imported so you must be highly organized. You need to know exactly when and what to order so that you never have to turn customers away. The ‘what’ there entails a lot e.g. what type of apparel, what brand, for which sex, for which age group, and so on. Your orders must not be random; they must be empirically informed by data. A clothing boutique business is profitable and scalable. Yes, most clothing boutique businesses are single-establishment. However, that does not mean you cannot scale. There are countless accounts of clothing boutique businesses that grew into multiple outlets.

Staff And Management

Staff requirements for a clothing boutique business may not be much but are always informed by your intended scale of operation. The most basic employees required would be customer attendants and cashiers/till operators. You must have enough shop attendants to work on keeping things in order. Remember that people tend to pick things up when checking them out and they usually put them back anyhow. It’s important to make it a point to hire people that have a drive and passion for clothing and customer service. The reason why you need such personnel is because of an observation I’ve made on several occasions. When prospective customers walk in they need to be engaged in a cosy and friendly way. If that doesn’t happen the incidence of people walking out in no time becomes prevalent. So having cheerful, sociable and passionate customer attendants is imperative. Obviously the salary costs of all your employees should be catered for in your clothing store business plan.

Just like most shop-based businesses, financial management and inventory management need close attention. In order to steadily grow the clothing boutique business it’s highly recommended that you diligently track all your financial transactions. A clothing boutique must be stocked in such a way that when any customer walks in they are most likely going to find what they want. No wonder inventory management is very important. Keep abreast with how your inventory is flowing i.e. knowing items that are fast-moving (implying they are in demand) and knowing as and when restocking is due. Apparently you’ll need to have solid working relationships with your suppliers. Also remember that digital marketing through the internet and social media is a powerhouse when it comes to clothing retail – leverage on it! Your clothing boutique business plan should have a proper marketing strategy to use for your clothing store business.

Marketing Plan

Niche-driven –thorough market research is needed.

The operative aspect here is that a clothing boutique business is niche-driven. A niche market is a relatively small and specialist, yet profitable market. As such your marketing plan must be informed by in-depth market research. You have to know all there is to know about your target market. The clothing boutique business can cater to all age groups. However, you need to know each age group and its specific needs in detail. Look into the buying habits, the general lifestyles, and also the societal trends of the day. You have to establish as well how best these prospects can be engaged i.e. how to reach out to them.

Make Your Clothing Boutique Shop A Spectacle

This means your clothing boutique’s design and layout must be extraordinary. One of the ways to do this is by using a space or outlet with an open plan. It should preferably be made up mostly of full length windows, especially at the front. This is for purposes of setting up an alluring window display. Adorn it with props such as dressed mannequins, decorative lights, and neon lights. The goal is to make the exterior and the interior of the clothing boutique as spectacular as possible. There are a sizeable number of prospects who will enter into a clothing boutique simply because they are drawn to its design.

Establish A Solid Online Presence

The clothing boutique is characterised by many visual aspects. Most of the purchase decisions are fed by customers liking what they see. Take of advantage of that and infuse it into your online platforms. Get a website developed with stunning visuals of high definition images and videos. Appreciate the dynamics of colour psychology so that you can emphatically appeal to prospects. That also applies to your social media accounts. Always post regular, engaging, and relevant content that is alluring. Invest in hiring people to pose as models in the clothing items you will be selling. That also calls for you to hire professional photographers. Buttress all this by conducting online contests to drive word of mouth.

Special Sales-Oriented Events Or Initiatives

This can at the very least be about offering specials such as discounts. You can periodically do clearance sales. You can come up with promotions where there will be prizes up for grabs. Think of allowing relaxed payment terms e.g. lay-byes, zero deposits, and the like. This can extend to starting a customer loyalty program. These are examples of events or initiatives that can drive sales. There is no shortage of many other ideas you can come up with by building on these examples.

Growth and development

Clothing boutique businesses should not be static. You will find new products and new clients. The key is not to take on any product or service that you are not fully prepared for. There are plenty of incentives to earn the loyalty of your customer. For example, store cards and bonus points will encourage consumers to come to your clothing store business. On the other end of the spectrum are the small shops in small towns where the use of cash is preferred to anything fancy like credit cards. Be sure to develop partnerships with particular clothing lines who may want to sell their products in your clothing store. The profit share schemes that they propose could significantly improve the clothing boutique bottom line. Your clothing store business plan financials should show the projected growth of the business as the years progress.

business plan e-clothing store

How to draft a great business plan for your e-commerce clothing venture?

A good business plan for an online clothing store must reflect the unique aspects of the e-commerce fashion industry.

To start, it's crucial to provide a comprehensive overview of the online fashion market. This includes up-to-date statistics and identifying emerging trends, similar to what we've outlined in our online clothing store business plan template .

Your business plan should clearly articulate your vision, define your target audience (such as fashion-forward individuals, budget-conscious shoppers, or niche markets), and establish your brand's unique value proposition (sustainable materials, exclusive designs, plus-size inclusivity, etc.).

Market analysis is a key component. This requires a thorough understanding of your competitors, online fashion trends, and consumer buying habits.

For an online clothing store, it's important to detail your product lines - such as women's wear, men's wear, accessories - and explain how they cater to the preferences and needs of your target customers.

The operational plan should cover the logistics of your online store, including the e-commerce platform, inventory management, fulfillment strategies, supplier relationships, and shipping methods.

Quality control, return policies, and customer service standards are also critical elements to emphasize, as they can significantly impact customer satisfaction and repeat business.

Then, outline your marketing and sales strategy. How will you drive traffic to your website and convert visitors into customers? Consider digital marketing tactics, social media engagement, influencer partnerships, and email marketing campaigns.

Having a robust digital strategy is not just beneficial but necessary for an online business. This includes search engine optimization (SEO), a user-friendly website design, and a strong social media presence.

The financial section is vital. It should include your startup costs, revenue projections, operating expenses, and the point at which you expect to break even.

Since the fashion industry can be highly competitive with variable margins, precise financial planning and a clear understanding of your cost structure are essential. For assistance, refer to our financial forecast for an online clothing store .

Compared to traditional business plans, an online clothing store's plan must focus more on digital marketing, e-commerce logistics, and customer engagement strategies.

A well-crafted business plan will not only help you clarify your strategy and approach but also attract investors or secure loans.

Lenders and investors are looking for a solid market analysis, realistic financial projections, and a comprehensive understanding of e-commerce operations.

By presenting a detailed and substantiated plan, you show your dedication and preparedness for the success of your online clothing store.

To achieve these goals while saving time, you can start with our online clothing store business plan template .

business plan online clothing store

A free example of business plan for an online clothing store

Here, we will provide a concise and illustrative example of a business plan for a specific project.

This example aims to provide an overview of the essential components of a business plan. It is important to note that this version is only a summary. As it stands, this business plan is not sufficiently developed to support a profitability strategy or convince a bank to provide financing.

To be effective, the business plan should be significantly more detailed, including up-to-date market data, more persuasive arguments, a thorough market study, a three-year action plan, as well as detailed financial tables such as a projected income statement, projected balance sheet, cash flow budget, and break-even analysis.

All these elements have been thoroughly included by our experts in the business plan template they have designed for an online clothing store .

Here, we will follow the same structure as in our business plan template.

The Financial Plan

Of course, the text presented below is far from sufficient to serve as a solid and credible financial analysis for a bank or potential investor. They expect specific numbers, financial statements, and charts demonstrating the profitability of your project.

All these elements are available in our business plan template for an online clothing store and our financial plan for an online clothing store .

Initial expenses for our online clothing store include setting up a user-friendly e-commerce platform, purchasing initial inventory from trusted suppliers, investing in high-quality photography for product displays, securing storage space for inventory, and costs related to brand creation and launching targeted marketing campaigns to reach our target audience.

Our revenue assumptions are based on a thorough analysis of the online fashion market, considering current trends, consumer spending habits, and the growing preference for online shopping.

We anticipate a steady increase in sales, starting with a strong online presence and expanding as our brand recognition and customer loyalty grow.

The projected income statement indicates expected revenues from our clothing sales, cost of goods sold (inventory purchase, packaging, shipping), and operating expenses (web hosting, marketing, salaries, etc.).

This results in a forecasted net profit essential for assessing the profitability of our online store over time.

The projected balance sheet reflects assets specific to our business, such as inventory, website development, and liabilities including debts and anticipated expenses.

It shows the overall financial health of our online clothing store at the end of each fiscal period.

Our projected cash flow budget details incoming and outgoing cash flows, allowing us to anticipate our cash needs at any given time. This will enable us to manage our finances effectively and avoid cash flow problems.

The projected financing plan lists the specific financing sources we plan to use to cover our startup expenses, such as personal savings, loans, or investor capital.

The working capital requirement for our online clothing store will be closely monitored to ensure we have the necessary liquidity to finance our daily operations, including purchasing inventory, managing e-commerce operations, and salary payments.

The break-even point specific to our project is the level of sales needed to cover all our costs, including startup expenses, and start making a profit.

It will indicate when our business will become profitable.

Performance indicators we will track include the profit margin rate on our clothing items, the inventory turnover rate to assess the efficiency of our stock management, and the customer acquisition cost to measure the effectiveness of our marketing efforts.

These indicators will help us evaluate the financial health and overall success of our online clothing store.

The 35 best plus-size clothing brands of 2024, according to stylists

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

As a plus-size woman, I personally know the struggle of finding great clothing in extended sizes. Fortunately, where once there were only two or three retailers catering to plus sizes, now there are dozens of dedicated brands making the best plus-size clothing we've seen in years. "We've really made some pretty big leaps and bounds when it comes to plus-size fashion and having a more inclusive shopping experience," said Kat Eves, plus-size celebrity stylist .

Still, shopping for plus sizes is far from easy or enjoyable for many, and progress has been slow. "The fashion retail industry is absolutely improving but in my opinion, not fast enough," said Hina Low, a personal stylist and plus-size content creator who works under the name Heensie . "We have seen popular retailers expand to a size 20 perhaps, but rarely more than that and often, only online. This is not true inclusion."

Eves echoed this, noting that major retailers' plus-size styles lean more basic than trendy. "Plus-size people are still getting stuck in a place of not necessarily being able to express themselves through fashion on the same level as smaller bodied people without having to really do a lot of research," said Eves.

If you're in that position, I've done some of that research for you. In addition to my own 20+ years of experience shopping for plus sizes, I consulted Eves and Heensie to assemble this guide. While I've included fast fashion retailers for convenience, both Eves and Heensie said they're most excited about (and prefer shopping from) the small, independent plus size brands that have been cropping up to fill the gap in the market for trendy, stylish plus-size clothing. If you're looking for the best plus-size swimwear or best plus-size jeans , we've got you covered there, too!

Here's a quick summary of our favorite retailers, but read on to find our full list and why we love them.

  • Eloquii is not only one of the best places to buy plus-size workwear but also one of the top retailers for finding cute sundresses , great denim , and even bridal attire . You'll find everything from trendy cuts to long-lasting basics here, which is why Heensie said it is "very well loved and a go-to for many plus-size customers."
  • Reformation   is a staple trendy clothing retailer with a great selection of extended sizes and a commitment to sustainability. It's an amazing place to find things like wedding guest dresses and linen pieces  like breezy pants and skirts for summer.
  • Universal Standard   was one of the first brands to truly pioneer stylish plus-size fashion and they continue to be one of the best in the game at serving folks up to a size 40. They even got our hard-won spot for best plus size workwear brand .
  • Skims is the best place to get all your basics, sweats, and pajamas. They have the comfiest T-shirts in sizes up to 4XL. Plus, they make some of the best plus-size underwear .
  • Madewell   makes fantastic jeans, like their famous '90s straight jean , but don't sleep on their other picks like swimsuits, T-shirts, and dresses.

Dia & Co

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Dia & Co

Size range: 0X to 5X; 10 to 32

You may know Dia & Co as a clothing subscription service , but the brand has expanded in recent years to be a full-service retailer of plus-size clothing. While it still offers its signature plus-size styling boxes, you can now shop à la carte for everything from swimsuits to jeans. In 2022, Dia & Co acquired 11 Honoré, an online marketplace of upscale brands offering plus sizes, so you can also browse designers like Diane Von Furstenberg and GANNI right from Dia's website. Shipping is free for à la carte orders over $75 and all styling boxes. Returns are free.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Eloquii

Size range: 14 to 32

Eloquii is a dedicated plus-size retailer catering to women size 14 and above, and Heensie said it is "very well loved and a go-to for many plus-size customers." There's a strong focus on work-appropriate attire, so you'll find great options for suiting and many day-to-night outfits, with the occasional statement piece ideal for a night out. Elqouii also has a bridal shop . You can get free shipping on orders over $125, though you'll pay shipping for returns unless you exchange for store credit.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at Amazon

Size range: 00 to 42; XXS to 8X

You can find thousands of plus-size clothing right on Amazon; the retailer even has a dedicated landing page, The Plus Shop , for extended sizes. Like the rest of Amazon, it can be tricky to browse and you'll find lots of third party sellers that could be hit or miss in quality. However, it's a great catch-all place to shop if you have a specific item in mind, but you're not finding it at other retailers.

If you're looking for a starting place, we recommend checking out The Drop , a size inclusive initiative where Amazon launches microcollections with influencers (including many plus-size influencers). As always, Prime members will get free shipping on eligible orders and returns are free and easy through Amazon's return center.

Reformation

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus size clothing at Reformation

Size range: 0 to 24

Reformation is one of the most popular upmarket clothing brands of the moment, and nearly 100 of its styles are available in extended sizing. The brand is known for its sustainable pieces, from statement dresses to capsule basics. Most of the pieces are available up to a size 24 and fit true to size, but several — such as the Layla Skirt ES — run large and could likely fit up to a size 28. The clothing is on the pricier side, but the brand is climate neutral certified and the pieces are built to last. Returns are free if you keep at least one item in your order. If you return all items, you'll incur an $8 return shipping fee.

Anthropologie

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at Anthropologie

Size range: XXS to 4X; 00 to 26W

If your style is dreamy and whimsical, Anthropologie is the place to shop. The retailer offers over 600 styles in plus sizes, with options for up to a size 26W (though you'll find the largest selection in sizes 16 to 22). Shipping is free on orders over $50, but you'll pay $5.95 return shipping unless you return in store. While its in-store plus-size offerings are limited, its clothing rental service Nuuly is a great way to try styles if you don't want to commit. You can rent six items at a time for $98 a month and you'll get a discount on any items you want to keep.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size styles from Madewell

Size Range : 00 to 28

We love Madewell for affordable women's basics , great-fitting jeans , and on-trend minimalist pieces. Madewell's youthful designs feature lots of neutrals, denim, earthy tones, and boxy fits. The brand carries most styles in both straight and plus sizes up to a size 28 or 6X and makes fantastic fitting plus-size jeans. Madewell's 90s Straight Jeans and Perfect Vintage Straight Jeans are among the best pairs I've ever owned, and they gave me the confidence to make the leap from skinny jeans to trendier straight-leg styles. Even if you're a casual Madewell customer, we recommend signing up for the brand's free rewards program, Madewell Insider, which will get you free returns on your orders (among other perks). Otherwise, expect to pay $7.95 for returns.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size styles from Cider

Size Range: XXS to 4X

For super trendy, TikTok viral clothing, Cider is the place to go. There are hundreds of styles available in sizes up to 4X. Everything is incredibly affordable with prices ranging from $8 for a bodysuit to $52 for a faux leather jacket. We recommend checking the product size chart for each garment before you buy, as the sizing seems to vary a lot from item to item. For example, we've seen skirts on the site that are both labeled as 4X, but range anywhere from 55 inches to 61 inches in the hips. Fortunately, returns are free, but you'll need to start your return within 14 days of receiving your items.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at BAACAL

Size range: 10 to 28

BAACAL is the plus-size line from Vince designer Cynthia Vincent, and reflects the same commitment to high-end, sustainable fashion using fabrics sourced from eco-forests in Japan. "She does such a beautiful job of creating really high-end pieces that look effortless," Eves said of the designer's kaftans, dresses, and jackets. BAACAL is a great place to shop for truly special pieces that you'll keep in your closet for decades, and its prices reflect that; you can expect to pay $200 to $400 for most items in the collection. The brand uses its own in-house sizing : its size 1 is meant to fit a US 10-12, while its size 5 should fit a US 26-28. Exchanges are free, as is shipping on orders over $50. Returns made for cash, however, will incur a $12 fee.

Universal Standard

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Universal Standard

Size range: 00 to 40

Universal Standard was one of the first retailers to pioneer true size inclusivity, offering every style in size 00 to 40. The brand uses its own letter sizing system that equates a medium to a size 18 (the average size of a woman in the US), and its unique Fit Liberty program lets you exchange many items for a different size up to a year from your purchase date, no matter how used the clothing is.

"Universal Standard is one of the more popular brands that are really leading the way in the fashion industry in terms of inclusive sizing," Heensie said. "They are my go-to for plus-sized denim, in both my clients' wardrobes and in my personal." The brand is also one of Insider's favorite places for shoppers of all sizes to buy the best workwear , affordable women's basics , the best T-shirt , and the best women's jeans , and statement pieces like leather jackets . Standard shipping is free, and for returns or exchanges not covered by the Fit Liberty program, you'll have 30 days to send your items back and will have to pay a processing fee of between $4.50 and $7.50.

River Island

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus size clothing at River Island

Size range: 2 to 24 (6 to 28 in UK sizing)

UK-based brand River Island now ships to the US, and offers many of its styles in plus sizes, including faux leather jackets, work-appropriate trousers, and stylish knitwear. All of the pieces feel like elevated and contemporary takes on classics; a similar vibe to Reformation. River Island is definitely a place to shop if you're looking for capsule-worthy pieces that can be dressed up or down. Because the clothing is processed internationally, returns unfortunately incur a $15 fee.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at SKIMS

Size range: XXS to 5X

From the best white T-shirts to the best lingerie , one brand that repeatedly shows up as a top pick in our buying guides is Kim Kardashian's SKIMS.  Products from SKIMS have made our guides to the best underwear , the best leggings , the best bras , and more. Since its launch in 2019, SKIMS has offered shapewear, underwear, loungewear, and more in a size inclusive range — its clothing currently goes up to a size 5X in most styles and up to a 44H in bras. It's a great place to shop for underwear, plus-size lingerie , and basics like T-shirts and leggings. You have up to 30 days to return items, and you'll pay a $6 return shipping fee on your order, unless you choose to receive your return in store credit.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Wray

Size range: XXS to 6X

One of Heensie's favorite places to shop for "folks who want something a bit more bold" is Wray. The brand makes an assortment of upscale statement pieces in a variety of eye-catching colors and patterns, which Heensie says "give a perfect hint of edge to any wardrobe." We particularly love its patterned sets, which are chic enough to wear to work, but loose and comfortable for lounging at home. While the pieces are pricier, Wray has a strong focus on sustainability and working with ethically run factories for production. There's an option to shop in store at the brand's NYC location, otherwise you'll pay $9 in flat-rate shipping. You have 30 days to make a return and there is a $4.99 return processing fee.

Abercrombie & Fitch

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus size jeans at Abercrombie & Fitch

Size range: 000 to 24 (23 to 37 in Abercrombie's in-house sizing)

If you live life in a larger body, the words "Abercrombie & Fitch" probably conjure deep memories of teenage exclusion. Surprisingly, the retailer has become a beloved destination for plus size jeans in the past few years. Abercrombie now carries short, regular, and long length jeans up to a size 24 (what it calls "size 37"). In addition to offering extended sizes in many of its traditional styles, its Curve Love line also provides an extra two inches of room in the hips, so there are options for a great fit regardless of whether you carry your weight in your stomach or hips. While we'd love to see the same inclusivity applied to Abercrombie's other clothing (which currently only seems to run up to an XXL), we recommend giving this unlikely retailer a try for great fitting plus size jeans.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Old Navy

Size range: 0 to 30; XS to 4X

For many plus-size customers, Old Navy is in the doghouse at the moment, as the retailer backed out of its much hyped "BODEQUALITY" campaign that promised to stock up to size 30 in stores. Still, Old Navy offers hundreds of inexpensive plus-size styles online, with the option to return in store or through the mail for free. The retailer often has big sales and you'll find many pieces available for under $20, making this a great place to shop for affordable clothes that are still on trend.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size styles from Shein

Size Range: 0 (XXS) to 34 (9X)

Shein is one of Gen Z's favorite retailers , and fortunately, it's incredibly size inclusive. Like Cider, Shein has hundreds of plus-size styles at incredibly affordable prices. You'll find everything from lingerie, to swimwear, to wedding dresses, along with thousands of tops, dresses, and pants in nearly every style you can think of. With the launch of its Fit+ line, the retailer now carries up to a size US 34 (what it classifies as a 9X). We recommend always checking the size chart before ordering, as exact measurements vary from product to product. You have 35 days to make returns, and return shipping is free.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at Spanx

Size range: XS to 3X

Spanx may be known for its shapewear, but the retailer has expanded in the past few years to include workwear and loungewear in up to a size 3X. Spanx is one of our favorite places to shop for stylish work pants , comfortable bras , day-to-night leggings , and tights that don't rip . Almost all the pieces are in neutral colors to easily mix and match with your existing wardrobe. Shipping and 90-day returns are totally free, so it's definitely worth giving Spanx a try if you're new to this retailer.

Shop all plus-size clothing at ASOS

Size range: 0 to 32

Any plus-size millennial can probably recount the relief they felt the first time they discovered ASOS. The retailer was one of the first to make a substantial collection of truly on-trend, cool clothing in plus sizes. "ASOS Curve can be difficult size-wise, because they carry an array of brands," said Heensie. "However, they are plentiful in their options and many plus-sized folks have been deferring to them for years for trendy pieces." At ASOS, you'll find hundreds of inexpensive styles for any occasion you can think of; it even offers plus-size jewelry . Most shoppers report that the clothing runs large, so you may want to size down for the best fit. The retailer offers free shipping over $50, and returns are quick, easy, and free.

Good American

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Good American

Size range: 00 to 32

Co-founded by Khloe Kardashian, Good American offers a size-inclusive range of jeans and other apparel in a plethora of styles. We've tested Good American jeans on all different shapes and sizes, and the retailer remains one of our picks for the best places to buy women's jeans . While jeans are Good American's forte, don't sleep on its other offerings — we recently named it one of the best places to shop for women's suits . You'll also find plenty of basics like white tees, bodysuits, and loungewear. Shipping is free on orders over $125, but you'll pay a $2.99 to $7.99 restocking fee if you need to make a return for cash (exchanges and returns for store credit are free).

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size styles from H&M

Size Range: 0 (XXS) to 30 (4X)

H&M is another great spot to check out for cheap plus-size clothes. The retailer only started offering expanded sizing in the last few years, but has quickly ramped up its collection; you can now find more than 600 styles available in plus sizes. Heensie also noted that the brand recently took on plus-size model Tess Holliday as a consultant, which shows promise for the future of the brand. In addition to a wide variety of basics (think your classic black tees and white button ups), you'll also find a nice array of statement pieces like band tees and neon knit layers. We recommend joining H&M's loyalty program , which will get you free online returns, otherwise you'll have to pay $5.99 in return shipping or return your items in store.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at Target

Size range: XS to 4X; 00 to 30

While Target offers a limited selection of plus sizes in stores, you'll find thousands of styles on the retailer's website. Target's website isn't set up well for browsing, so we recommend perusing the straight-size clothing in store and then finding your size on Target's app or website. We particularly love the retailer's selection of bathing suits and inexpensive jeans. Target has one of the best return policies in the biz; you have 90 days to make a return on regular merchandise and up to a year to return items from Target's own lines (Universal Thread, A New Day, etc.).

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Insyze

Size range: 10 to 40

Insyze is a plus-size online marketplace that Eves said "makes it easy for plus-size shoppers to shop with ethical and sustainable brands." The retailer provides a comprehensive sustainability profile on each brand it sells and has storefronts specifically for sustainable and designer clothing. You can shop several of the other brands in this guide, like Sante Grace and Baacal right from Insyze. It's a great place to discover new plus-size brands, especially since shipping is free on orders over $100 and returns are completely free within 14 days (you can choose between a full cash return or a 110% store credit).

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus-size clothing at Athleta

Size range: XXS to 3X

From athleisure to technical apparel, Athleta is the place to look if you're in the market for plus-size athletic wear. Many pieces we love, including the Brooklyn Ankle Pants are available in up to a size 3X and are nice enough to wear out and about, or even to work. We still think Athleta has a ways to go until true size inclusivity, but the brand is a Certified B Corps , meaning it has met the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Returns are free and you have 60 days from the ship date to return in store or through the mail.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all plus sizes at Mango

Size range: XXS to 4X; 0 to 22

If you're looking to put together a capsule wardrobe, Mango makes elevated staples in neutral tones for effortless mixing and matching. You'll find timeless pieces with a French aesthetic that are equally at home at the office or out to brunch. While the retailer offers plenty of styles in up to a 4X, keep in mind that the pieces sold in numerical sizes (such as jeans and some dresses) only go up to a size 22. Returns within 30 days are free, so it's worth trying out a few different sizes to see what fits best.

Big Bud Press

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Big Bud Press

Size range: XXS to 6XL

If your aesthetic leans more "should have been born in the '70s," Big Bud Press is worth a look. You'll find unisex clothing up to a size 6X with strong vintage hippie vibes — think bell bottoms and psychedelic patterns in silhouettes range from androgynous to slightly feminine. "I live in their jumpsuits when I'm working as a stylist," said Eves, who also noted that the LA-based retailer revamped its sizing based on feedback from plus-size customers. Return policies are on the strict side: Returns and exchanges must be postmarked within 14 days of delivery, and the customer is responsible for return shipping.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Free Label

Size range: XS to 5X

If you still scoff at the idea of wearing "hard pants" post-pandemic, Free Label is a great place to shop for pieces that are stylish yet comfortable. "They make the most glorious loungewear and bras," said Heensie. The brand focuses on natural fibers like linen and cotton, along with some pieces made using deadstock fabrics; all sustainable options. Heensie said the brand is very community-oriented and regularly solicits feedback on fit. You'll find models of all sizes on the site, so you can get an accurate idea of what the clothing looks like on various body types. Shipping is free on orders over $100 and the brand offers returns within 7 days of receiving the items.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Sotela

Size range: practically any

One of Heensie's favorite retailers is Sotela. "I love their commitment to a perfect fit at any size," said Heensie of Sotela's made-to-order garments and custom sizing. Everything is made in the brand's LA studio from sustainable, eco-friendly fabrics. The brand offers dresses, pants, jumpsuits, and tops in a range of cotton and linen fabrics dyed in a range of earthy colors. You can choose from a pattern-cut size (up to a 67 inch hip width), or opt for a custom size for the most tailored fit. All pattern-cut items are eligible for exchange for store credit within 14 days of delivery. Custom fit items are final sale.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Wildfang

Size range: 0 to 26

Many plus-size designs trend hyper-feminine, but if your style leans more masculine to gender-neutral, Wildfang is a great place to shop. The brand recently expanded its size offerings to fit up to what would typically be a 26 in traditional women's sizing. You'll find button-ups, jumpsuits, and trousers that can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. "Their suiting options, especially for gender-inclusive style is something that I'm really excited about," Eves said. Shipping is free over $50 and returns are free within 35 days of purchase.

Shop all plus-size dresses at Selkie

Size Range: XXS to 6X

For more princess-style dresses, take a peek at Selkie. Among hundreds of designs available in up to a size 6X. You'll find flouncy silhouettes inspired by Mary Antoinette, Claude Monet, and Jane Eyre. With dresses starting at around $200 and ranging up to $1,000, these are certainly investment pieces, but it's a great place to browse for prom, bridal, and special occasion wear. While dresses are Selkie's forte, you'll also find a handful of loungewear, skirts, and puffer jackets. Shipping is free for orders over $300, otherwise you'll pay $20. You have 15 days from receiving your item to initiate a return or exchange, and you'll have to pay for return shipping.

Loud Bodies

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Loud Bodies

Size range: 0 to 42

Eves and Heensie both recommended Loud Bodies, which specializes in loud, bright, colorful clothing, with options for up to size 42 (10X). You'll find everything from workwear basics to statement pinafores in unique prints and flashy colors, all with a focus on sustainability. "I love how utterly whimsical this brand is," Heensie says. "Their dresses are like something out of a storybook, and are perfect for anyone who is looking for a bit of cottagecore or just plain magic in their wardrobe." The retailer is based in Romania and each item is made to order, so expect a wait time of 2-4 weeks on orders. You'll also be on the hook for return shipping if your order is under $200.

Tunnel Vision

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Tunnel Vision

Size range: XXS to 7X

"This is another great brand that prioritizes size inclusivity, is very community-oriented and dials up the edginess even further," Heensie said of Tunnel Vision, who noted the brand also offers size-inclusive vintage and buy-back stock . The Los Angeles-based retailer cheekily calls its designs "clothes for deadbeat, lowlife weirdos," and its offerings reflect that punk-rock irreverence, with lots 90s-core designs that look like an angsty teen made a collage out of 1997 Delia's and Hot Topic catalogs. "My punk and goth clients love pieces from here," Heensie said. Tunnel Vision uses carbon-neutral shipping and all its new clothing is made in certified sweatshop-free environments. The brand doesn't currently offer returns, but does allow exchanges for store credit.

Sante Grace

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Sante Grace

Size range: 1X to 4X

"Sante Grace out of LA is doing some really interesting, ethically made fun fashion for people of lots of different style types," said Eves. "So you've got everything from a really cool gold sparkle jogger to a totally work appropriate suit vest." Tracy Christian, the designer behind Sante Grace, was inspired by fashion houses like Balmain and YSL; luxury brands she couldn't fit into as a plus-size person. She channels similar edginess and modernity into her own designs, which include caftans, rompers, dresses, and suiting. Shipping is free on purchases over $125, and you have 7 days to return items for either an exchange or store credit. You'll pay return shipping and a $5 restocking fee per item.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing at Nooworks

If you love bold statement pieces and lots of color, Nooworks is the place to shop. The brand is a favorite of Eves, who particularly loves its jumpsuits. "They have some really interesting fun designs that are created by independent artists," Eves said of the Nooworks' bold patterns. The brand prioritizes sustainable fabrics and prints its patterns in Los Angeles using a rotary printing technique that is more environmentally friendly than dyeing. It also offers a resale platform where customers can buy and sell used Nooworks' pieces. You have seven days from the receipt of your items to initiate a return or exchange. Returns for cash incur a $10 restocking fee.

Tamara Malas

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothing from Tamara Malas

Size range: 2 to 36

If maximalism is your vibe, you'll love the plus-size options from Tamara Malas. You'll find items that are bright and loud in both color and silhouette — think bi-color velvet pants and psychedelic print biker shorts. Shipping within the US is $7, and like other small retailers the return window is quite short — you have 14 days from receiving your item to initiate a return and you're on the hook for the cost of return shipping.

Pine Cone Row

women's apparel business plan

Shop all clothes from Pine Cone Row

Size range: 0 to 30

While many retailers that make plus sizes base their measurements and fit on straight size models, Pine Cone Row designs its garments twice — on both a size 8/M and size 20/2X. The result is a tailored fit that feels custom to plus-size bodies. Pine Cone Row launched its 001 collection in September 2022, so it's relatively new on the scene, but its first five drops have been filled with a mix of staple and statement pieces. In addition to its thoughtful sizing approach, this Black woman-owned business uses fabric sourced from its home base of Los Angeles, with a priority of using as much US milled or overstock fabric as possible. The brand currently doesn't offer returns or exchanges.

women's apparel business plan

Shop all dresses at JessaKae

JessaKae makes dreamy, fairytale-like dresses, with most designs available up to a size 6X. The brand is prominent on TikTok and Instagram, where you can find videos of the styles modeled in every size. Just keep in mind that the return policy is quite restrictive: the brand only offers return credit in the form of a gift card and will deduct the cost of return shipping. What is considered plus size?

In the US, plus size is generally considered to be size 18 or above, though size 12, 14, and 16 shoppers may also identify as plus size because clothing options become more limited above a US 10. The average woman in the US is variously reported to be between size 14 to 18, which means more women wear plus sizes than straight sizes in the US.

Where can I buy plus-size vintage?

The options for plus-size vintage aren't nearly as numerous as they are for straight sizes, but several dedicated plus-size vintage shops have popped up over the last couple years. Some of Eves' favorite places to shop for plus-size vintage and consignment are Luvsick , Proud Mary , The Plus Bus , and Plus BKLYN . A few of the retailers in our guide, including Tunnel Vision and Nooworks, also offer vintage or buyback stock on their websites.

What we know and what we don't about a historic settlement to pay college athletes

A sea change is coming to college athletics.

On Thursday, the NCAA and the so-called "power five" athletic conferences reached a groundbreaking agreement that seeks to end the century-old tradition of amateurism in college sports by allowing athletes to receive pay directly from the colleges and universities they play for.

The agreement, part of a class-action lawsuit known as House v. NCAA , must be approved by a federal judge overseeing the case, a decision that could be months away.

FILE - Wisconsin's Traevon Jackson dribbles past the NCAA logo during practice at the NCAA men's college basketball tournament March 26, 2014, in Anaheim, Calif.

NCAA and college conferences OK $2.8 billion settlement over antitrust claims

The proposed settlement has two parts. First, it would distribute some $2.75 billion to athletes who competed before July 2021, when the NCAA first allowed athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness rights. Second, it would create a future revenue-sharing model in which schools could each distribute around $20 million per year directly to athletes.

But far from closing the door on the years of debates and litigation over the question of payments to student athletes, the proposed settlement raises a slate of even more questions: Which athletes will be compensated? How much will they make? Will women be paid equally to men? Will schools that are unable to pay athletes be able to keep up with bigger, richer schools?

"Those are going to be very important details we're going to have to work out," said Matt Mitten, a professor of sports law at Marquette University. "The settlement is just the start."

Here's what we know and what big issues remain unresolved.

What would the proposed settlement cover?

In short, the future-looking part of the proposed agreement creates a system in which schools that are part of Power 5 conferences — the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12 and the Southeastern Conference, all of which voted to approve the proposed settlement — can pay athletes.

Each school will be allowed to distribute up to around $20 million to its athletes, an amount based on a percentage of the average revenue earned annually by the power conference programs. That percentage begins at 22 percent and could go up over time. It's expected that other schools, those outside the Power 5 conferences, will be able to opt in.

College football is back and players still aren't getting paid

College football is back and players still aren't getting paid

"This landmark settlement will bring college sports into the 21st century, with college athletes finally able to receive a fair share of the billions of dollars of revenue that they generate for their schools," plaintiffs' attorney Steve Berman said in a statement.

Will all college athletes get paid?

No. Football players and men's basketball players at large programs are the most likely to receive payments. That's because most of the revenue earned by college athletics departments has historically come from TV contracts to broadcast those two sports. Women's basketball also earns some revenue, and those players too could receive payments.

"It's going to be up to each school to decide how they're going to distribute that $20 million. And that's going to probably vary a lot from school to school," said Mit Winter, an attorney who has represented conferences, schools and athletes in a variety of college sports legal issues.

A New Era Dawns In College Sports, As The NCAA Scrambles To Keep Up

Schools will also have the option to pay players in sports that generally don't generate revenue — like rowing, soccer, tennis, track and field and more — but it's unclear how institutions will choose to proceed.

And many schools that aren't part of the major conferences may choose not to pay anything to any players at all, which could eventually open a competitive gulf between the haves and the have nots.

As an example, Mitten pointed to his employer, Marquette, whose men's basketball teams have reached three Final Fours despite the school's lack of a football team and accompanying revenue that could more easily fund payments to players.

March Madness is an NCAA gold mine. This year, players can finally cash in too

"How do we maintain the parity and competitive balance among the 350-plus Division 1 basketball schools when not all of them play football and are getting, individually, millions and millions of dollars from these big TV contracts?" he said.

Will women be paid equally with men?

The proposed settlement marks a new frontier for Title IX, the cornerstone civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination at educational institutions that receive funding from the federal government.

Title IX's legacy in college sports has been massive, as schools are required to pay out scholarships in equal proportion to women as they do for men.

Women's NCAA championship TV ratings crush the men's competition

Women's NCAA championship TV ratings crush the men's competition

Now, schools will have to determine whether and how the law applies to revenue payments to athletes. It will likely be up to litigation to resolve the question, he said.

"There's really no set final answer on how Title IX is going to apply," said Winter. "I think some schools will assume that Title IX is going to make them give 50 percent of that $20 million to female athletes and 50 percent to male athletes. Other schools won't make that assumption."

Are the NCAA's antitrust woes over?

As much as the NCAA may hope this settlement puts the years of antitrust lawsuits behind them, on this one, experts agree: The answer is no.

Of particular concern is the cap that the settlement places on payout, which is set for now at 22 percent of the average revenue earned annually by Power 5 schools. That figure is much lower than the portion of revenue paid out in professional sports like the NFL and NBA, where players take home about half of revenue.

In those leagues, players have agreed to receive that share of the revenue by way of collective bargaining agreements. Those labor agreements provide legal protection from individual lawsuits over compensation, said Mitten. But in college sports, where athletes aren't considered employees, no such bargaining agreements exist — meaning the NCAA is still exposed to antitrust litigation.

The NCAA and schools are already lobbying Congress to pass a federal antitrust exemption for college sports that would protect them from future lawsuits over pay.

GPT-4 is better than humans at financial forecasting, new study shows

  • OpenAI's GPT-4 is better than humans at analyzing financial statements and making forecasts, according to a new study.
  • "Even without any narrative or industry-specific information, the LLM outperforms financial analysts in its ability to predict earnings changes," the study found.
  • Trading strategies based on GPT-4 also delivered more profitable results than the stock market.

Insider Today

OpenAI's GPT-4 proved to be a better financial analyst than humans, according to a new study.

The findings could upend the financial services industry that, like other business sectors, is racing to adopt generative AI technologies.

According to the study conducted by the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, the large language model did a better job of analyzing financial statements and making predictions based on those statements.

"Even without any narrative or industry-specific information, the LLM outperforms financial analysts in its ability to predict earnings changes," the study said. "The LLM exhibits a relative advantage over human analysts in situations when the analysts tend to struggle."

The study utilized "chain-of-thought" prompts that directed GPT-4 to identify trends in financial statements and calculate different financial ratios. From there, the large language model analyzed the information and predicted future earnings results.

"When we use the chain of thought prompt to emulate human reasoning, we find that GPT achieves an accuracy of 60%, which is remarkably higher than that achieved by the analysts," the study said. The human analysts were closer to the low 50% range with regard to prediction accuracy.

The large language models' ability to recognize financial patterns and business concepts with incomplete information suggests that the technology should play a key role in financial decision-making going forward, according to the study's authors.

Finally, the study found that applying GPT-4's financial acumen to trading strategies produced more profitable trading, with higher share ratios and alpha that ultimately beat the stock market.

"We find that the long-short strategy based on GPT forecasts outperforms the market and generates significant alphas and Sharpe ratios," the study said.
