PTLLS Qualification Guide: Everything You Need To Know

PTLLS Qualification Guide: Everything You Need To Know

If you are in the education and training sector, particularly within a teaching or training role, then you have probably heard of the PTLLS qualification.

You might have heard people spell it out as P.T.L.L.S or use the ‘petals’ pronunciation.

Both of these are used to describe a qualification called Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, also known as the PTLLS qualification.

The PTLLS qualification was available in several formats over a number of years, became the de facto standard for teaching and training adults, and remains widely referred to.

This is all despite the fact that PTLLS has been replaced by the newer qualification called the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET).

Let’s dig a little deeper into the PTLLS qualification and how it has transitioned over the years to become the Level 3 AET.

Table of Contents

What is a PTLLS qualification?

PTLLS stands for Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. A PTLLS qualification is a nationally recognised qualification that has now been rebranded as the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) qualification.

A PTLLS qualification could be taken by any individual who wanted to teach adults, no matter what subject they were teaching or at what level of sophistication or complexity. Unlike more advanced teaching qualifications, PTLLS did not need the candidates to be teaching in a real-life situation.

It was suitable as both an introductory course, for those wanting to get into the field of teaching, and individuals already teaching, but needing a formal qualification to prove their teaching skills.

What can I teach with a PTLLS qualification?

With a PTLLS qualification, you are opening the doors to the education and training world. Many governing bodies consider the PTLLS qualification (and its replacement, the Level 3 AET) to be essential qualifications for most teaching or training roles. For some, it is even a minimum requirement.

If you want to read a thorough breakdown of everything you can teach with a PTLLS qualification, you might like to read our What Can I Teach with a PTLLS qualification? guide .

How was the PTLLS created?

As you might imagine, a formal education and training qualification doesn’t get magically created out of thin air! Hold onto your hats for a deep dive into how the PTLLS was created and what it involved for candidates.

Trigger warning – it’s an alphabet soup of acronyms and numbers!

Prior to the launch of the PTLLS qualification, there was really only one route to teaching or training adults. This route was to gain a qualification called the 7307 Level 3 City & Guilds Certificate in Teaching Adult Learners Stage 1.

This teaching qualification was only available via City & Guilds , not any other awarding bodies, and was more or less the only recognised way to gain a nationally recognised qualification for teaching adults.

This meant that people would say things like “I’ve got my 7307” or “I’m going to get my Stage 1”, and these numbers worked their way into everyday language within the education sector.

Fast forward a few years and a quango (remember them?) called Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) collaborated with City and Guilds, and some other Awarding Bodies, to launch a new qualification.

This teaching qualification was called the PTLLS 7303 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This new qualification was available at both Level 3 and Level 4.

To complicate things further, this was changed from a 9-credit qualification to a 12-credit qualification!

Is this confusing? Yes, you bet it is!

The real motivation behind these changes was a change in law, specifically the Further Education Teachers’ Qualifications (England) Regulations 2007.

This legislation required everybody teaching adults in a college or further education (FE) institute to have a PTLLS qualification, or as it was phrased in the law itself, “ no person may teach in a further education institution unless that person holds a Preparing to Teach Award or its equivalent .” A further clause gave a grace period of 1 year for any new teacher to gain their PTLLS qualification.

All these changes massively increased the recognition of the PTLLS qualification, as well as the total number of people taking the qualification.

This legislation was later amended to remove the requirement for people in further education to have a PTLLS qualification, but the initial popularity the qualification achieved from all of this never went away. As a result, it remains widely recognised despite now being replaced.

What has replaced the PTLLS qualification?

In recent years, the PTLLS qualification has been replaced by Level 3 Award in Education and Training . The Level 3 AET is regulated by Ofqual , the government qualifications regulator, which is why it has the letters RQF (Regulated Qualification Framework) attached to it. The Level 3 AET qualification retains many features of the PTLLS so essentially, it is the same qualification. The AET qualification is a short course providing candidates with the skills and knowledge to plan and teach lessons. It remains an ideal route into teaching, training and education for a wide variety of people.

Just like those who gained their PTLLS qualifications in the past, gaining the Level 3 AET proves you have the skills and abilities within a training or teaching role.

Although the qualification names, regulatory systems and legislation may have changed considerably, the importance and status of gaining a Level 3 teaching qualification remain the same.

This makes the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) the ideal introductory qualification for individuals looking to advance their careers within the education and training sector.

At Carlton Training, we provide a Level 3 AET training course along with tutor support to ensure you have everything you need to pass your AET qualification with flying colours. On successful completion of this education and training course, you can start your career in teaching or training adults.

With our online course option, you can study and qualify from the comfort of your own home, at a pace that suits your lifestyle. Click here to learn more about the course content and book online.

This course was really really good and very informative . The support from Chris was second to none especially when I needed assistance with completing the course in time for another course that required the level 3 as a pre requisite. The feed back and speed to questions I had was brilliant. I have nothing but praise for Chris and the whole experience!! Thank you. I will be back for the Level 4 in due course. :). Chloe Grimes
Thank you for this great feedback, it was an absolute pleasure working with you and so glad we could get you a certificate out in time! Chris Turner
The support I received from Chris was outstanding, I would recommend anyone to study with this course provider :) Kerry rolls
Kerry, thank you so much for your kind words - I wish you all the best with your future teaching! Chris Turner
I have been really impressed with this course. I spent a long time looking at various providers before I settled on this course based on previous student feedback and I have not regretted my decision. The course was easy to access and work through in my own time and by working intensely I was able to complete the level 3 award in just a few weeks. It would have been just as easy to work through the content at a slower pace. My tutor was excellent and seems to work 24/7 because feedback was so prompt and even received over the weekend. He answered the couple of questions I asked even faster. The course was excellent value compared to others and allowed me to meet my objectives and receive the qualification I needed easily. Rebecca
Rebecca, thank you for your fantastic feedback which you have forwarded to us at the office. We are so pleased you have enjoyed your course and were happy with your purchase. We hope to work with you again in the future should you decide to gain higher level awards in your chosen field! Chris Turner
Wonderful course and I got a lot more out of it thanks thought!!! I have just set up a business to pass on my expertise. This course has taught me how to look at delivery from the learner's perspective not mine. This means that my learners will be more engaged, motivated and learn more!! That should mean more recommendations and repeat customers. A win win!!! Great support from CTC throughout. My final assessment was teaching guitar and I enjoyed it so much I am now looking to add this as another income stream!!! Simon Creasey
Thank you for the brilliant feedback. We are so pleased that this course has given you so much. Chris Turner

This course is well structured with plenty of course material to assist in completing your assignments. Each unit gives you a course reading booklet you can download to refer too. uploading completed assignments is made easy and once they are marked the most important thing is the feedback from your tutor, this is invaluable, so you can reflect on your work and prepare for the next unit. CTC is very helpful should you need assistance at any time and I would personally like to thank Chris for all his feedback and support. I would highly recommend CTC Training and Education and I will be using them again in the future. Many thanks for everything. Jason Clements
Thank you for your kind comments - it has been a pleasure working with you and look forward to hearing from you in the future should you decide to enrol in higher level qualifications! Chris Turner
After taking a few years off from studying I was unsure as to whether I would be any good at this. However I can not praise this course enough. It has been fully explained, fully supported and I have not at any point felt out of my comfort zone or unable to approach for support. The online sessions were easy to follow and all explained really well. This has definitely settled me back into studying and I look forward to attempting higher levels. elena may

This is the ideal course for somebody who wishes to get a foot on the education & training ladder but doesn't have masses of spare time to commit. I found the open ended timescale really useful in fitting around my busy life and it helped to eradicate any stress regarding completion of the course. Chris was a friendly tutor and always ready to respond to my questions or issues, even out of office hours. This is my first attempt at 100% online education and I certainly won't hesitate to use CTC training to aid my career in the future. Great value for money too. Thank you Gareth Davies

Thank you for your positive comments. It has been a pleasure working with you on this qualification. Chris Turner
Started this course months ago and lost a little bit of motivation at the beginning as I find it hard to concentrate for long but once I got stuck back in I was amazed at how easy it was to learn from the online content and videos and apply this to the workbook tasks. I enjoyed the assessment method as the written tasks were broken down into easy sections and while I was apprehensive of filming a 15 min video it was actually fun! Chris literally replied to answer questions immediately which was so helpful and reassuring. Overall an excellent course that I would happily recommend to anyone going into teaching. Leah B
Thank you for the lovely feedback. It is really good to hear that you found our content easy to follow. I wish you all the best with your teaching. Chris Turner
Completing the AET (was formerly PTTLS) has given me the confidence and skills to deliver training to adult learners. I do not come from a training background so the theory behind how people learn has been invaluable. I researched providers of AET via Google and there were a lot and I was concerned about signing up to a company that wasn’t reputable. With this in mind, I used the link to CTC Supplies via a reputable agency and have been very pleased with the professionalism and online support provided and would have no hesitation in recommending them as a provider for the training. Studying for the qualification has given me credibility as well a confidence FIONA QUADE
We really appreciate your lovely feedback and we are extremely pleased you have gained so much knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching! Chris Turner
In the beginning, I was a bit afraid. How the course will be, how I will manage and also about the tutor. But now I can say to everybody, go for it without thinking, even for a second. You will have a good tutor who is a superb leader in this course. You will get a quick response from him. Even if you get stuck somewhere and ask questions do 100s of emails or calls he will response you instantly. Good wishes and respect for him Chris you are a great tutor. Hope and wish to see you some point in person and say thanks. Abida Perveen
Thank you so much for the fantastic comments. I am always pleased to hear we all met your expectations and delivered a service to be proud of! Good luck with your future teaching! Chris Turner

Ptlls assignment 1.

Review what your role, responsibilities and boundaries as a teacher would be in terms of the teaching/training cycle.

This essay discusses the roles and responsibilities of the teacher in the lifelong learning and the boundaries of teaching in order to provide a supportive learning environment. It gives detailed idea of the subject in order to help you complete your homework. Don't copy it but write it in your own words and tailor it to your own field of teaching. Check out the book Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector guaranteed to help you complete all your PTLLS essays.

People have different learning styles which are influenced by personality type, educational specialization, career choice, and current job role and tasks (Kolb, 1984). Therefore, research proposes that teachers should assess the learning styles of their students and adapt their classroom methods to best fit each student's learning style.

My role of organising and delivering training & development programmes starts by identifying the learners’ needs. Before the course starts, I carry out an initial assessment of all learners, by direct contact and through their training manager.

I carry out further evaluation of learners’ needs on the first day of the course through a questionnaire and informal discussions. I believe this evaluation will also ease and encourage two-way communication during the training. You may notice this meets the concept of Moslow (1954) who proposes that evaluating the different needs, values, drives and priorities of people is incredibly valuable in cross-cultural communications.

Interestingly, research conducted by the Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) shows that ‘identifying needs’ is the first step in the training cycle which is made up of 6 activities, namely:

  • Identifying Needs
  • Facilitating

Their research suggests that despite teachers having different roles and responsibilities they share the same broad activities. Please note that the teaching and learning cycle is similar to the training cycle but uses slightly different terminology.

My role also includes designing and managing training sessions and material according to companies’ requirements, and delivering training lectures. This involves unnoticeable activities such as maintaining trainee records, filing, and photocopying. My role extends outside the class; I book venues and arrange visual aids, produce PowerPoint material, and attend meetings. Would you imagine how long it can take for me just to prepare, plan and design a one-day training session!

Check out the book Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector guaranteed to help you complete all your PTLLS essays, and you can use it to quote references in your essays!

In order to facilitate learning, I maintain a professional relationship with learners at all times, value them as individuals and support them (Gravells, 2008). In the class, beside engaging and motivating learners, I ensure a safe and supportive learning environment; for example, it is my duty to set up and discuss with learners ground rules that establish safety and promote inclusion which reduces the barriers to participation and learning (Booth and Ainscow, 2002).

I recognise the importance of monitoring and evaluating the learning as the programme progresses and the importance of providing detailed feedback. Following the evaluation and after the training is complete, I also send out a feedback follow-up email to all learners.

Business Administration being my specialisation is a large area which includes HR, Finance, Marketing, Information Systems, etc. which are all constantly developing and changing. It is my responsibility to keep updating myself with knowledge and developments around these subjects. Since I completed my MBA, I have been maintaining memberships with relevant institutions which offer development and guidelines, and have been regularly attending training workshops and courses including the PTTLS. Also, as part of my responsibility, I follow my organisation’s code of conduct and constantly refer to its manual, and update myself with legislations including the Health & Safety Act and the Equal Opportunities Act.

Teachers have wide authority in the class for maximising teaching effectiveness and influencing a positive learning environment, but of course there are limits to how far they can go when performing their duties. There are boundaries and limitations.

As a teacher, I will never attempt to express or enforce my own beliefs whether religious or political. I will comply with my organisation’s rules and policies. In cases such as problems with mentally impaired learners, the teacher may seek expert advice or refer the learner to a specialist instead of dealing with a problem in person.

Finally, the varying roles, duties and responsibilities of teachers always fall under the umbrella of the teaching and learning cycle. Understanding the responsibilities and boundaries will help the teacher provide a supportive learning environment, stay in focus and achieve the organisation’s goals and the subject’s aims within the limited resources and time.
