This programme of study is to provide a professional qualification and specialist training in the discipline, and may prepare for doctoral level study. The program aims to equip students with an understanding of key issues and research finding in applied linguistics, and with the skills to make a substantial professional contribution to the field. The program prepares students for entrance into the profession as both teachers and scholars. Candidates who join this programme have the option of choosing part-time or full-time status to suit their personal and work schedule

  • A Master's degree in research mode; or
  • A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 3.00/4; or
  • A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 2.50-2.99/4 with additional requirements; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area with minimum CGPA 3.67/4 (fast-track to PhD)

The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

  • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
  • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
  • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 154; or
  • A minimum score of 47 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
  • A minimum of Band 109 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
  • A minimum of Band 3.5 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Exemption is given to candidate if:

  • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
  • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
  • Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
  • Part-time: Min 6 semesters /Max 15 semesters

Research overview

We offer high-quality doctoral training to postgraduate students who wish to pursue an MPhil or PhD. As a research student, you’ll work closely with two allocated supervisors who will assist you in planning, executing and presenting your research. We encourage applications in any topic related to English studies.

The School of English offers research opportunities across a variety of topics related to English studies and draws on the resources of Nottingham’s renowned Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics. This is an interdisciplinary research centre devoted to describing and understanding language as it is acquired and used in the real world. Research expertise within the school includes 19th-century literature and post-colonial studies along with American, British, Indian, South-East Asian and Malaysian literatures. Creative writing, grammar, gothic literature, the fairy tale, literary theory, gender, identity, discourse analysis, World Englishes, grammatical analysis, interactional linguistics, sociolinguistics, publishing studies and systemic functional linguistics are also included in the course programme. Why choose this programme? 

You will cover the range of theoretical approaches making up the contemporary critical terminology of English and English studies. The course will also develop your awareness of practices in language use and their application to various contexts. The course will focus on developing your ability to engage in critical evaluations of current research along with developing your ability to problem-solve in respect of real-world projects and case studies.

Our global footprint allows you to draw on the supervisory expertise of over 80 staff specialising in numerous fields of English studies across our three campuses. Located in the UK, Malaysia and China, students are encouraged to spend a period of time at any or all of our campuses worldwide.

All candidates are considered on an individual basis and we accept a broad range of qualifications. The entrance requirements below apply to 2024 entry.

A good master’s degree (usually merit or higher) plus, an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Non-UK qualifications will be assessed against this standard.

PhD in Arabic Linguistic Studies

PhD in Arabic Linguistic Studies

The programme is designed to produce scholars and experts in Arabic who are committed to spiritual, moral, intellectual and creative excellence. In handling the programme, the department approaches the discipline from an Islamic perspective and emphasizes integration of knowledge by considering both the Arabic/Islamic intellectual heritage on language and modern linguistic scholarship. Modern techniques and methods of research also receive attention in the programme in order to prepare graduates who are able to face contemporary challenges.

Programme Description

This is a full time and a part-time programme that requires a minimum of 3 years (6 semesters) and  5 years (10 semesters) respectively to complete. The maximum period allowed for the programme is 6 years (12 semesters) for the former and 8 years (16 semesters) for the latter.

Candidates are trained in research methods, Islamisation of human knowledge and a specialised area in history to prepare them for the challenging task of producing original research in the form of a dissertation/thesis. The expected length of the dissertation/thesis is around 80,000 - 100,000 words and it must be written in Arabic. Areas in which the candidates can specialise include theoretical and applied linguistics, syntax, morphology, semantics, lexicography and translation studies.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in the relevant discipline with good grades from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University.
  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline or its equivalent with good grades.
  • Arabic and English proficiency levels at the following minimum score: IIUM's Arabic Placement Test (APT) :  7.0 TOEFL (Paper Based) : 500 IELTS : Band 5
  • A good grade is normally interpreted as a minimum cumulative grade points average (CGPA) of 3.0 on the scale of 4 or its equivalent.
  • Candidates are required to provide evidence of English proficiency by submitting their proficiency certificates before the beginning of the programme. If they fail to do so, they will be required to sit for the IIUM-administered English Placement Test (EPT).
  • Candidates who fail to obtain the required proficiency but are still interested to join the programme must take pre-sessional English courses at the university's Centre for Languages (CELPAD) or other recognized institutions.

The Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics was set up in 1998 with the first intake of undergraduate students. The staff members in the Department also conduct Malay language courses for international students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At present, the Department has 16 staff members who engage in teaching and research in the languages taught in the Department and translation studies.

The Department provides students with an education that emphasizes creativity and life-long learning. As a result, they can easily adapt to a wide range of professions. Graduates of the Department majoring in either Chinese or Tamil Language; will be equipped with a high degree of proficiency in these languages, and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Our graduates work in both the public and private sectors, especially in the fields of education, mass media and other language related fields.
