Business/Management Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a business-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various management-related degree programs (e.g., MBAs, DBAs, etc.) to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover: Lessons in Strategic Change

In late October 2022, Elon Musk officially took Twitter private and became the company’s majority shareholder, finally ending a months-long acquisition saga. He appointed himself CEO and brought in his own team to clean house. Musk needed to take decisive steps to succeed against the major opposition to his leadership from both inside and outside the company. Twitter employees circulated an open letter protesting expected layoffs, advertising agencies advised their clients to pause spending on Twitter, and EU officials considered a broader Twitter ban. What short-term actions should Musk take to stabilize the situation, and how should he approach long-term strategy to turn around Twitter? Harvard Business School assistant professor Andy Wu and co-author Goran Calic, associate professor at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business, discuss Twitter as a microcosm for the future of media and information in their case, “Twitter Turnaround and Elon Musk.”

The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”

Headquartered in Kitengela, Kenya, Sian Flowers exports roses to Europe. Because cut flowers have a limited shelf life and consumers want them to retain their appearance for as long as possible, Sian and its distributors used international air cargo to transport them to Amsterdam, where they were sold at auction and trucked to markets across Europe. Here are a few tips that will help you select a good topic – spend ample time researching on the internet, speak to your seniors and get ideas from them, discuss your shortlisted topics with mentors and professors, choose a topic that matches your future career aspirations, and lastly the topic you choose should be of interest to you.

MBA graduates are known to earn handsome salaries. The salary earned by MBA passouts in India is primarily based on their overall work or industry experience and their qualifications. That being said, their salary also depends on their MBA specialisation. Usually, those who opt for specialisations such as HR, finance, marketing, and business analytics, are observed to bag jobs with the highest compensation packages. Securing a seat in any of the premier MBA colleges in the country is a bonus since the top business schools offer exceptional placement opportunities with lucrative salaries; the numbers can range from INR 4-14 lakhs an annum for freshers to INR 25 lakhs a year for experienced professionals.

While all of us respect and envy the brilliant career paths of MBA graduates, we often tend to overlook the level of extreme hard work they have had to put in before bagging that dream job. If you ask MBA graduates, you will come to know that studying MBA is indeed taxing. You need to flourish in a highly competitive environment and have to give your best performance all-round, be it practical projects or academics. And the tremendous volume of things that need to be completed, along with the sheer lack of time for self-preparation, studies, or even family, can pose as reasons for enormous stress throughout the study.

HR managers have to deal with employee layoffs, organisational policy violations, payrolls, and company-wide communications. The basic job of the HR manager is to oversee and look after employee life-cycle management, including onboarding, recruitment, training, employee termination, and of course, employee benefits. Basically, human resources managers are responsible for supporting the employees by updating company policies, maintaining records of employees and supporting their career aspirations and growth, facilitating employee education, training and supporting managers, ensuring employee wellbeing and welfare, and enforcing disciplinary action in an unbiased and prudent manner.

The Top 100 Business Schools, Ranked By Research

The Wharton School’s one-year excommunication from The Financial Times ’ Global MBA ranking in 2023 had all kinds of consequences. The biggest beneficiary was Ivy rival Columbia Business School , which moved into the top overall spot — and which climbed into second place, behind Harvard Business School , in  FT’s research ranking that year.

Alas for CBS, it was just a one-year blip. Wharton , widely regarded as one of the best research schools on the planet, returned to FT’s Global Ranking in 2024 and not only claimed the top overall spot away from Columbia, but also bumped Harvard out of the top research rank. Columbia sank to this overall and fourth in the list of best programs for business research, and Chicago Booth School of Business , which had been ranked No. 4 for research, moved to No. 2. Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management , a surprise No. 3 in research last year (where it had vaulted from ninth the year before), sank to sixth, one place behind Texas-Dallas Jindal School of Management .

While the Jindal School has enjoyed success in the FT ranking, up from sixth last year and 10th two years ago, its deep investment in research is better advertised by its own pair of rankings for North American and Worldwide schools, which it publishes in tandem annually. And in both of those, once again this year, Wharton was the story — ranking No. 1 by a long, long way.

NO RESEARCH SLOUCHES HERE

Wharton’s research prowess is legendary in higher education. The University of Pennsylvania’s B-school is home to more than 20 research centers and initiatives, in every subject from analytics to public policy to social impact. Its scholarship generates new courses, programs, and partnerships between academics, industry, and government — all in the service of addressing pressing global business challenges.

But there are no research slouches in the FT or UT-Dallas rankings, especially not in the upper places. Harvard has 11 research centers and regional offices around the world; Columbia has six major academic divisions from Accounting to Management to Marketing under which research is conducted, categorized, and published. Chicago Booth has 13 centers and initiatives, including the Harry L. Davis Center for Leadership, the Rustandy Center for Social Sector Innovation, and the renowned Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which runs one of the premier startup accelerators in the world. Cornell Johnson, ranked No. 3 for research by FT last year and No. 6 this year, boasts industry-leading centers like the Parker Center for Investment Research and the Smith Family Business Initiative.

Overall in FT’s 2024 research ranking, all of the top six, eight of the top 10, and 16 of the top 20 research schools as ranked by The Financial Times are based in the United States. See the complete 100-school FT ranking on Page 4.

WHARTON PROFS PUBLISHED 392 ARTICLES FROM 2019 TO 2023

The FT ranking weighs the number of publications by a school’s current faculty in 50 academic and practitioner journals over a 30-month span; the twin rankings released annually by UT-Dallas are constructed differently, looking instead at a school’s number of publications in 24 journals in a five-year span. And once again, one school dominates in this measure: In the most recent span from 2019 to 2023 ( last year’s ranking was for 2018 to 2022 , the year before that was for 2017 to 2021 , etc.), Wharton had an incredible 392 articles, down only slightly from 396 in the ranking released in 2023, which itself was up from 380 articles in 2022, 353 articles in 2021, and 323 in 2020.

The No. 2 school in both the North American and Worldwide rankings was UT-Dallas itself — just as it was last year — with 297 articles, up from 275. In third place in both rankings was Columbia Business School with 289 articles, followed by Harvard with 279, and Chicago Booth School of Business with 278 to round out the top 5.

TOP 8 SCHOOLS IN BOTH TEXAS-DALLAS RANKINGS ARE IN U.S.

UT-Dallas provides a tool to study research articles published in the leading business journals; that database contains author information on all research published since 1990. A single-authored article gets the author’s affiliated school a score of 1; the ranking addresses the issue of shared authorship by giving each school a score of p/n , where p is the number of authors from the same school and there are a total of n authors on the article.

If an author lists multiple schools, each of the schools that author is affiliated with gets a corresponding scaled score. For example, if one of the n authors lists m affiliations, each school that the author is affiliated with gets a score of 1/nm . In this way, Wharton achieved a score of 197.25, down from 204.86 in 2023 (when it was the only school to reach 200 points). For the 20 years that UT-Dallas makes available for examining on its website, Wharton has been tops in every one. UT-Dallas scored 142.70, followed by Columbia (136.18), Harvard (132.51), and Chicago Booth (127.16). (See pages 2 and 3 for the complete 100-school UT-Dallas rankings.)

The top eight schools in both rankings were U.S. B-schools, with the first deviation in the Worldwide ranking being INSEAD , of France, at No. 9 with 251 articles and 111.75 points. In 2023, the top 10 in both rankings were U.S. schools; INSEAD was 11th, up from 12th in 2022.

SDA BOCCONI PLUMMETS; CANADA ADDS 1 SCHOOL

Overall in the Worldwide ranking, the U.S. accounted for 67 places, up from 65 in 2023 and 66 in 2022. The United Kingdom had eight places, led by London Business School at No. 24 (up from 26th), while China also had eight, led by Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) at 28th — exactly where it ranked in 2023. Other notables included HEC Paris at 51st, down from 45th; and Italy’s SDA Bocconi School of Management at 76th, way down from 53rd.

In the North American ranking, the first non-U.S. B-school was the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management , which landed 16th with 226 articles and 93.86 points. (Rotman was 17th overall in the Worldwide ranking.) Canada’s premier B-school was 19th in 2023 and 22nd in 2022.

Canada had nine schools in the North American ranking this year, up from eight last year, but like last year all except for Toronto were ranked below 35th.

See pages 2 and 3 for the 100-school UT-Dallas North American and Worldwide rankings, and page 4 for the 100 top research schools as ranked by The Financial Times.

See FT’s Global MBA ranking here , and UT-Dallas’ research rankings here .

Usu uwlp publishes research summaries on health, entrepreneurship, and finance.

Women's Health

Researchers from the Utah State University Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) conducted a statewide study to establish a baseline of public perceptions of the awareness, understanding, and attitudes regarding the challenges Utah women and girls face. The survey, conducted in the fall of 2023, focused on five areas: education, community engagement, safety and security, health and well-being, and the workplace.

In October and November 2023, the UWLP collected data from 3,505 Utahns ages 18 and older. The 80-question survey was based on existing literature and survey instruments, guidance from experts, and baseline data needed by leaders of  A Bolder Way Forward  (BWF). This initiative invites Utahns to break down the barriers that keep women and girls from thriving.

Nineteen research summaries have been or will be published to provide Utah leaders and residents with insights about Utahns’ current perceptions.  To date,  13 research summaries  have been released.

Research summaries were recently released on  Health Across the Lifespan ,  Entrepreneurship , and  Finance .  The summaries, authored by Susan R. Madsen, founder and director of UWLP, are used to set goals and metrics for a BWF. Below are highlights of each research summary.

Health Across the Lifespan –  The UWLP has researched topics related to women through the years, and the elements of mental, physical, social/emotional, and/or environmental health have emerged in nearly all research.

  • Most Utahns agree on some level that they can schedule and complete a preventative healthcare visit in the next 12 months.
  • Women agreed at higher levels than men that they could make informed decisions regarding reproductive health.
  • 45% of respondents do not feel knowledgeable about perimenopause (this was especially true for men).
  • One-quarter of respondents were either unsure or did not feel safe at some level in a doctor’s office or medical setting.
  • 47.1% disagreed it is likely that one of their healthcare providers will screen them for intimate partner violence in the next year and connect them with necessary resources.

“The bottom line is that Utah girls and women are experiencing substantial health challenges,” said Madsen. “Health impacts all other domains in our life. It also intersects with the other focus areas in A Bolder Way Forward movement.”

Entrepreneurship – Utah has seen substantial growth in women-owned businesses. It ranks high in some aspects, yet poorly in others, as shown by WalletHub’s disparity in the entrepreneurship rate  between men and women.

  • 51.9% of respondents agreed they would start a business if they had the opportunity and resources.
  • 81.9% agreed at some level that their families and friends would approve/support their decision to start a business.
  • 55.1% agreed (only 18.4% strongly agreed) that if they started a business, it would grow enough to employ others.
  • 41.6% disagreed at some level that if they started a business, they would know how/where to access resources and support.

“Many Utah residents said they would start businesses if they had resources and opportunities, yet many were not aware of the support currently available to all Utahns, especially women,” Madsen said.

Finance –  Data on Utah women and finances were limited. Yet, it is critical that women of all ages work toward achieving financial security and making informed financial decisions.

  • 14.5% and 28.6% strongly agreed or agreed that they are aware of resources that can help them achieve financial security.
  • Nearly everyone surveyed believed they should understand their own finances.
  • 71% agreed or strongly agreed they can manage personal finances independently and make informed decisions to improve their financial wellness.
  • 81% strongly agreed that women must be competent and confident with money.

“A Bolder Way Forward aims to make Utah a place where more women and girls thrive in any setting,”  Madsen said. “ Strengthening  women’s awareness and use of financial resources, as well as their competence and confidence in managing money and making informed decisions, will benefit Utah families and the state as a whole.”
