Relock a course.
After a Canvas course's term has ended, the course becomes read-only for enrolled students. Instructors can no longer add or remove members using the People tool, send messages to students in the course, or edit course content. As an instructor, to perform these functions after the term has ended, use the Unlock Course button to reopen the course. You can later relock the course using the Lock Course button.
To unlock a Canvas course after the term has ended:
- Navigate to the course you want to unlock, and from the course navigation menu, select Settings .
- After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be unlocked, and the course end date will be set to one month from the current date. If you're satisfied with this end date, you don't need to take further action.
- If you want the course to remain open for a longer or shorter period of time, in the "Ends:" field, revise the course end date, and then click Update Course Details to save your changes.
You should now be able to make changes throughout your course. The course will now appear above the "Past Enrollments" heading on your personal "All Courses" page.
To relock a course you have previously unlocked:
- Navigate to the course you want to lock, and from the course navigation menu, select Settings .
- After the page automatically refreshes, your course will be locked and the course end date will be blank.
The course will now appear under the "Past Enrollments" heading on your personal "All Courses" page.

How do I lock or unlock an assignment or assessment?
How to lock an assignment or assessment for all students:
How to lock an assessment or assignment for an individual student or class:.
- Select Assessment/Assignment Center from the left side menu.
- Select Assignment Bank.
- Click the checkbox to the left of the Assignment/Assessment and click the Lock/Unlock button.
- Select " Ok ".
- The bold lock icon next to the assignment indicates that the assignment is now locked and can't be viewed or worked on by students.
- To unlock an Assignment/Assessment, simply repeat steps 3-4.
- Select Assignment Bank .
- Click the gear icon in the Settings column for the assignment or assessment.
- Scroll down and click on the black plus sign next to a class to see the list of students. Check the box next to the student name to select specific students, or check the box next to the class name to select all students in that class. Check the box in the Lock Assignment column for each student. Click Save Assignment.
- To unlock an assessment or assignment, follow steps 3-4, and uncheck the box in the Lock Assignment column.

Lock an assignment
You can control when students can access or submit an assignment by locking an assignment. Lock an assignment to restrict students from accessing it until the date you set. Or, you can lock submissions to prevent students from submitting assignments after a date you set (e.g. the day after the due date). Note : these steps do not work for discussion assignments.
Lock an assignment :
- In the course navigation, click Assignments , then click on the name of the assignment.
- Under Assign to , choose the section you wish to lock the assignment for. You can also leave it as Everyone .
- Under Available From , enter the earliest date students can access the assignment.
- Under Until , enter the latest date that students can access the assignment. Time of day is optional.
- Click Save or Save & Publish .
- Hiding and Posting Grades in Canvas
To hide grades in the Canvas Gradebook, you must use the Grade Posting Policy. Also, share this article with your students so they know where to look for assignment feedback.
How to hide grades if your assignment column is empty
- Go to your Canvas Gradebook.
- Select Grade Posting Policy .
- Change the setting to Manual . The manual setting will hide the grades from the students until you Post Grades. The Automatic setting, which is the default, will show the grades to the students as soon as the assessment has been scored. Changing the setting to Manual will hide any grades that are entered into the column after the setting has been changed.
- Select Save .
- The grades will be hidden from the students until you choose to Post Grades .
How to hide grades if your assignment column already has grades
- Select the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See Fig. 1).
- Follow the steps 1–5 above to change the Grade Posting Policy to Manual . This will hide future grades from the students until you choose to Post Grades .
Note: You may also set the default posting policy in your course to Manual . To do so, select the Gear icon at the top right of your gradebook and then select the Grade Posting Policy tab. Change the option to Manual and then select Update .
How to show grades
- A red dot will appear next to those grades that are currently hidden.
- Change the option to Graded (See Fig. 4).
- Select Post.
